Re: [MBZ] CD changer info for Larry
Hi Royce, I rec'd this answer from www.installer.com - perhaps your Becker was newer than mine (1991)? No parts availiable to do this. Sorry. Dwayne Help Desk Orig msg To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Becker Grand Prix Hello, I have a '91 Mercedes 300D with a Becker Grand Prix head unit and a Tuner and seperate amp in the trunk. The parts are no longer available to repair the OEM changer. I am told it is possible to attach a MP3 player or an iPod to this system. I am a novice - so please be patient with my ignorance. Is there an adapter that can be connected to the amp or tuner in the trunk so I can put a MP3 or iPod in the trunk? Or perhaps the head unit can be wired to accept a MP or iPod and then put one or the other in the glovebox? What's the difference between iPod 1 and iPod 2? Is there a Aux input somewhere I can use with your fmm-100? I am willing to consider placing the MP3 or iPod in the trunk or the glovebox - it doesn't matter to me - especially if the MP3 has a large HD. Larry T . - Original Message - From: Royce Engler [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: mercedes@okiebenz.com Sent: Monday, March 12, 2007 11:50 AM Subject: Re: [MBZ] CD changer info for Larry Werner said Larry -Harman-Becker will do a dandy hidden mod to the stock car radio for $100, so that you can plug in an MP3 player. The audio controls still work on the radio, and when the MP3 is unplugged, the radio functions normally. I did that for my '83 SD, and mounted the small jack enclosure inside the glove box. You can load a lot of CDs into the MP3 and save yourself a lot of trouble with changers in the trunk, wiring, etc. I just added an iPod connection to my wife's Toyota Highlander. Cost me about $130 because I needed an aux input amp. Piece of cake...completely plug and play except for the power connection, which was optional and I haven't done yet. Got the parts from www.installer.com, they seem to have connectors that fit just about any stereo system. In some cases, it's just a matter of plugging an adapter into the aux input RCA ports (if they existah, there's the rub) OTOH, if the head unit has a connector to go to a rear changer, it's likely that these guys have a plug and an adapter that will fit it. YMMV. If all you need is an RCA plug input, go to Radio Shack and get an RCA to 2.5mm adapter for under $10 and you are home free. Same adapter I use to connect the iPod to my living room stereo system In addition to every CD I own, I've probably got 5 or 6 GB of books on tape from Audible.com loaded. Makes the 30 mile commute more tolerable or even useful. Considering the accident frequency, due supposedly to infrastructure (non) up-keep, I don't think I'd like to be on a train anywhere in the U.S. these days. The Acella runs from Boston to DC. Theres Metroliner service into your area I think. From Boston to NYC the Acella runs through some very pretty and pretty interesting areas. Where it runs right along the ocean its very pretty. Places like were it runs through Bridgeport. CT just across the river from Groton, CT is pretty interesting including one HUGE building where they apparently build submarines, at least the door is submarine shaped. I haven't gone south of NYC on the train yet, if I get the opportunity I will though. -Curt Date: Mon, 12 Mar 2007 14:17:20 -0400 From: Gary Hurst [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: [MBZ] OT: Amtrak To: Mercedes Discussion List mercedes@okiebenz.com Message-ID: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1; format=flowed you are making me want to go somewhere by train! last time i went anywhere was like 20 years ago, from san jose, ca to seattle. i kind of enjoyed it . they had some kind of very cheap promo deal on that train from los angeles, so we played lots of different card and tile games with people from the hood we would never meet otherwise. i didn't like sleeping in the seat though. i think if i had some kind of sleeper car, the trip would have been just grand. - Don't be flakey. I haven't ever heard anybody say Mobil 1 in the transmission didn't work out. Well other than the other poster who had a dirty transmission but that wasn't the Mobil 1's fault. Synthetic engine oil is great, it makes the car start easier when its cold and lets my 190D go 10,000 miles between oil changes both of which in this cold weather have been GREAT. If you don't drive your Benz when its cold or can't (or don't want to) take advantage of the long change interval then synthetic isn't a good choice for you, there are plenty of very good conventional oils. Synthetic grease, eh, whatever... I play with old snowmobiles, snowmobiles are hard on grease. I tried some synthetic, it didn't seem to make any difference, things were stiff until they warmed up a little just like with regular grease and it disappeared with the exact same annoying regularity. Re: [MBZ] OT: Amtrak
Not a chance. Florida roads only went North and South then, especially rails. To ride from Ft. Lauderdale to Ocala means a trip to Tampa first, so there must be some routes that do cross state now. I quit using Amtrak, as much as I liked it, because to visit family meant middle of the night trips to the train. Only Ocala arrival now is @ 3AM, departure about 4:30 AM. 40 years ago there were arrivals from S. Florida 3 - 4 times a day, during the work day [I used to pick kids up there for camp]. I enjoy train travel, but the schedules just didn't work for me. Both Boston's South Station and NYC's Penn Station have good places to eat right in the train station. Logan has a couple good places, JFK and Laguardia don't or at least not that I've found. They cost almost exactly the same depending on what time of day you go. I see no reason to EVER fly to NYC... For my honeymoon we took the train from Albany to Niagra Falls. It took about 8 hours which is only a little more than it'd take you to drive. I don't remember exactly but I don't think it was all that expensive, around the same as flying I'd think. Clunk is bad, firm is OK. Clunk means something is loose or worn, in my case the rear diff mounts, possiblly a flex disk getting old. Tranny mounts can go bump too. On the 220D it's a pronounced clank due to wear on the spider carrier. Peter
Re: [MBZ] 911GT-3RS
I used a 911 for years as daily transport. Other than regular service stuff, it was probably the most reliable car I've owned. Used it to go to the food stores, take the 120 lb dog on road trips and would bolt on some stickey tires for about as much fun as you should be allowed to have in a road car. :-) As for any image, if people want to believe that, sure go ahead. We who have them know we have some of the best engineered cars around, and if you buy the right ones used, they are the cost of a new Honda Civic, and little more to run. [MBZ] Fwd: OT: train, coast to coast, 24 hours
Answer from friend Louis...told you, he's a steam engine freak. Interesting, though. SO, yes, I was wrong. FYI, Lou is not a diesel fan. He is even into steam cars...and that comment will probably start another thread No, he doesn' thave a steam car. His daily driver is a '64 Olds Jetstar 88. Chris Louis J. Tofari wrote: Dear Chris, Gruess Gott! I never recalled having said that one could travel from coast to coast in 24 hours in 1940's, nor can I conceive that I would, because this simply was not possible due to a number of factors, though the speed of steam locomotives (built for fast passenger and freight service) was not one of these, as the NYC's 4-8-4 Niagara's were capable of making over 120mph while carrying freight (a dynamometer car test proved this in the 1940's when a Niagara's speed literally went off the charts while hauling a freight train; the graph went up only to 120mph; other locomotives, such as Santa Fe's 4-8-4 Northern's had speedometer-tape readers that went up to 120mph). In fact, such locomotives routinely ran at over 80mph (especially here in the Midwest where the wide, flat plains much such speeds readily available). Unfortunately, due to the false historic perspective that most now have of the modern steam locomotive, thanks to the political-propaganda blitz of the diesel agenda (enacted by GM's and GE's company, EMD [ElectroMotive Divison] and the backing of the oil industry), it is popularly thought that steam could not make it much past 60mph, though facts contradict this dinosaur myth. Steam was (and still is) not only faster than diesel-electrics, but could accelerate faster as well (when diesel-electrics were first put on commuter trains, the schedules had to be lengthened due to the slower acceleration of the diesels versus those of their older steam counterparts). In the late 1930's until the 1942 (WWII) however, the NYC's Twentieth Century Limited was scheduled to make it from New York to Chicago in just 16 hours (a +900 mile route), under steam, and including limited stops (either at stations or for coal refueling). The NYC had some great innovations along the NYC-Chicago route such as water track pans from which their water scoop equipped tenders could refill from while traveling as fast as 80mph (thanks to some fancy venting on the tender), which assisted in keeping the times low. To this day, no railroad has bested this record; not even Amtrak with its supposedly modern equipment. The main obstacle that would have prevented such a possibility was that not a single railroad extended from the east to the west coast, or even directly across the nation at that. For instance, for years the Union Pacific had no direct access (tracks of it own) that went into Chicago. So they had to piggy back with the Chicago and Northwestern (CNW), that is, the train in question (e.g., the Overland Flyer) was a joint effort, with CNW taking it (under its motive power) from Chicago to a point where the UP was, then the UP's motive power taking over. The same was true with the famed California Zephyr; the Burlington (CBQ) took it out from Chicago and near Denver, the Denver Rio Grande (DRG) took it over, and subsequently the Western Pacific (WP) at Salt Lake City which brought it to its final destination in San Francisco. Perhaps then I was speaking with hyperbole; certainly the train schedules in the 1940's were more varied, often times faster and definitely more efficient then Amtrak runs today, and without the aide of modern technology; for instance, as of 1935 (again, initially under steam) CNW's The 400 literally ran 400 miles in 400 minutes between Chicago and the Twin Cities (in competition with the Milwaukee Road's Hiawathas and Burlington's Zephyrs), both heavily strewn with residential areas where restricted speeds (i.e., under 30mph) were required. So considering these factors, if a single railroad did extend directly from NYC to San Francisco (a little more than 2000 miles), had innovated features such as track pans, standing relief locomotives, a limited-stop schedule and no snow in the Rockies!, etc., a 1930's - 1940's high-speed schedule could have been covered by steam in about 33 hours, just 9 hours more than 24. In any case, if at some time I provided you with the wrong information, my humble apologies. Till next, God bless. Re: [MBZ] Amtrak
I grew up in Germany, where public transportation and especially the trains were great. But even in Germany, my relatives all drove because they lived in rural areas. The focus is different in the States. We have too many open areas where public transportation is a poor solution. Atlanta is a great example of an effective public transportation system at work, so is the SF Bay Area, but I doubt that you will see effective public transportation in Arab, AL or any other less populated area. We actually have a bus based public transportation system here in Huntsville, AL. I even see people riding them every once in a while.. Huntsville has about 130,000 residents. The issue? We are spread across a city that's 25 miles long by 9 miles wide our shopping centers really aren't that centralized. Re: [MBZ] Audio mods
Harman-Becker in Upper Saddle River, NJ does indeed mod the standard M-B radios for just that - an auxiliary MP3/iPod input, that then interrupts the radio's audio path and inputs the aux signal. No visible mods, and all the audio controls of the radio still work as usual. Just remember that you might need the code if your radio has the anti-theft system, since the radio has to come out of the car for them to mod it. The entire system: Sony discman, cassette adapter, car, and home power adapters was $5 at the thrift store, and all works. I love surfing the trailing edge! But the system is awkward with all the cables, the Alpine makes a lot of transport noise, and the audio path is easily overdriven into distortion. Something a bit more integrated would be a nice solution, but probably will never happen. -- Jim
Re: [MBZ] The Chicken Wagon rides again!
Last night while driving I had a serious transmission non-shifting episode. After the panic cleared I remembered that it's done this before, if you drive too much/fast with it held in first gear (as I often do in parking lots) it won't upshift once you take off unless you come to a complete stop for a bit. I'd forgotten, and on the road it would rev and not shift, then slip and not accelerate at all, etc. (Rolling while in neutral does not clear it up.) A total mess. Pulling over and sitting in park for a few seconds restored it to normality. This transmission is _not_ right! But I think we can learn to work with it. My wife, however, will probably not notice this, its worst problem, because she uses the brakes rather than the shifter. (I use it to prevent upshifting when I don't want it to do so, I don't use it to force downshifts.) Today I went into storage and found the best spare seat. Unfortunately it is about as discolored (from sun) as the existing seat, but at least it is not all cracked. The back might be a little better, but there are some chewed spots in the side of the would-be replacement. I'll just have to be content with replacing only the bottom cushion. I separated the two seats' halves and cleaned the new seat bottom, but I ran out of time to finish the job. It takes a fair bit of time to do seat work. And space! I was sprawled out in the yard (a soft place) trying to avoid all the nasty bones the dogs have littered the place with. Unfortunately the seat tracks have to come all apart in order to liberate the frame assembly. -- Jim

They won't run as efficiently on diesel mixed with ANY of the following: ... camel urine... routinely adding them to the fuel will raise the cost of operation... Camel urine, given that the well-rounded individual already has at least one camel in his stable, should not noticeably increase your operating costs. Before you spend any money, I would like to reinforce making sure the connections are good. MB has a history of poor contact due to oxidation. Unplugging and replugging the sensor connection a couple times will probably fix your problem. On my 79 the sensor wiring passes through the connector on the glow plug relay and this is absolutely another connector that should be exercised! you will have to unbolt the glow plug relay from the fender to do this I think. Watch your gauge stabilize after doing this.. The most common cause of what you report is a bad ground connection. It could be the main battery to chassis ground or the ground to almost any circuit that shares ANY common path with the temp circuit return. Increased resistance in the temp gauge circuit causes the gauge to read low. Your gauge is jumping high. This results from excessive current in some part of the circuit path - often unrelated to the temp gauge circuit. Marshall -- Marshall Booth Ph.D. Ass't Prof. (ret.) Re: [MBZ] Mercedes tranny clunks (was some Subaru stuff with Benz content)
Incorrect modulator pressure can also cause the CLUNK when shifting (particularly downshifting). The modulator is on the driver's side front of the transmission, and can be adjusted using a little T handle under a rubber dust cap. This is the thing the vacuum line goes into on the transmission. To really adjust this properly, you need a pressure guage to monitor tranmission fluid pressure through a pressure test port. I'm going from memory here, so don't remember exactly where this port is. Since transmission stuff is not really covered in the FSM, it can be a challenge to find the info. There used to be a very good write-up on this on the old mbz.org site. I've probably got it around here somewhere if you need it. Of course, it could just mean your transmission, transmission mount, flex disks, and/or rear end is toast :^( Maybe you should just sell it to Kleb :^) Gary Thompson Georgetown, TX 1995 E320 On 3/12/07, Steve MacSween [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I have the vacuum disconnected on my '82 300sd, and when it's in Drive it gives a LOUD clunk on the 3-2 downshift. Hi Royce, No problem - I'm contacting Harman Becker at Werners's suggestion to get them to modify my Becker - basically they'll add a 2.5mm (??) plug so I can plug a iPod or MP3 into it ( hidden hopefully) and keep the iPod in the glovebox. Werner has this setup and is happy with it. I tinkered with the idea of putting the iPao in the trunk but there's no reason to go to that trouble. May as well keep it where it'll be handy. I checked the size of the files on my wifes Audio Books and they are small enough to allow me to buy a MP3 w/ a 1,2, or 8 GB and probably never fill it up. I'll let everyone know what Harman-Becker says when they reply to my email --- IMHO, if anyone has the trunk mounted amp tuner I have and they want to maintain that equipment, I think the M3 or iPod is the only aternative that makes sense. It's impossible to have the Becker Silverstone CD Changer repaired anymore - the parts are just not available. [MBZ] Auto extending_retracting antenna on 300D
I periodically use a silicone spray lube on my '84 300D antenna to clean the shaft(s) to prevent sticking due to dirt. The antenna appears to have four sections, but only the top (narrowest) and bottom sections extend no matter how much effort is taken in cleaning and running the antenna up and down. I've even tried pulling on the top section as hard as I could while it was extending to see if I could help unstick the center two sections. Anybody got a clue? TIA. G. M. Brown Rochester, NY
Re: [MBZ] 87 Timing chain GEARS replacement
Different engine, those are 617s and the chain wears more as a general rule. Use synthentic, though, reduces wear. The 87 is a 603 engine, completely different. Peter

Anyone know for sure what years and with what engines the manual was an option in the USA? All but the 1987 turbo AFAIK, but the install rate was well under 10% (probably less than 5%) on most of them. In the 1990's you could get a Sportline with 5sp and either 2.3 or 2.6. 2.6 stick Sportline is very close to a 16v in performance and interior.

[MBZ] AMTRAK in the midwest is a joke
Gary, It's been that way for years, I used the train from Dallas-Philly in '62 and it was a joke then. From Dallas-Chicago it was the Santa Fe then and, other than a derailment (Not fun, as we waited many hours to get on our way again), the Santa Fe was clean, etc., but Chicago-Philly was the old Pennsy and everyone knows the joke this was. I can plug in my laptop on the train, nevermind the fact that the seating area is big enough that I can ACTUALLY USE my laptop. I can get up and get a snack in the cafe car, sure the prices are high but theres no problem bringing your own food... Again it was MUCH more comfortable... Of course on that run flying is MUCH faster but that was October 1, 2001 and nothing was going to make my wife get on an airplane. Irrational I know but there you are. -Curt Date: Mon, 12 Mar 2007 06:51:30 -0700 (PDT) From: Christopher McCann [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: [MBZ] Amtrak was:79 year old veggie oil maker harassed by gummint To: Mercedes Discussion List mercedes@okiebenz.com Message-ID: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Content-Type: text/plain; charset=iso-8859-1 I love taking the train, but Amtrak is SO bad in the midwest it is practically unbearable. 50 hours from Madison, WI to Deming, NM. They have some good lines on th East coast, where I assume you are (Manhattan), but elsewhere it is awful. If I had to go from Kansas City to South Carolina - I have to change trains in CHICAGO!! In almost every case, flying is cheaper than the train, sadly. Chris - Expecting? Get great news right away with email Auto-Check. Try the Yahoo! [MBZ] what are your odds?
A bit of a gruesome subject but on my mind these past few days. My next door neighbors' daughter-in-law was killed last Friday morning on her way to work. She was driving a Ford Escort and was hit by an F250 4X4 that lost it and spun accross the median and right into the driver's side of her car. A fraction of a second either way and the truck should have passed in front of her or behind her. I have to wonder if she had been driving a more robust vehicle, if she might have had a better chance. Can't help but think of that little video of the old Mercedes being crash tested. Maybe it was just her time and it wouldn't have mattered what she was driving? A bit of a sad thing for everyone though. She was 34 and she and her husband have a toddler who is not yet 3. Randy
