Re: [MBZ] It's always something

2015-07-13 Thread Curly McLain via Mercedes
My neighbor gave me a fairly nice 10 year old john Deere made Scott
mower that is a fairly heavy duty model with 54" deck, took care of
my need to buy a new mower. It was using about a quart of oil an
hour. It has a Kohler command engine and quick search turns up it
had bad head gasket or 2. I ordered the head gasket set a while back
and tore it down today. The right side was leaking/burning for sure.
Left side was not. Everything was going nice and smooth until I was
using torque wrench on last head nut on the 2nd head and snap, damn
head stud snapped. I don't know if I had the torque wrench set
wrong, or what. I did pull the head back off and there is these
metal collars on the base of the studs in that side of the head that
sort of hold the gasket in a certain position. They were somewhat
bent so I'm not sure if it was tightened too much bent them, or if
the head was not down over them all the way or what. I think bottom
line I must not have had the torque set right. I ordered a stud
extractor and new stud but it will be next week before it shows up.

Always something.

Ordinary household silicone contains acid (vinegar smell) that will corrode
metals and will degrade electrical connections. The marine silicone is not
acidic and doesn't have that problem.

Just get one of those like I got (or something similar) and you can
watch it on whatever screen you have. It picks up sound but does not
have a speaker/intercom feature. There are probably cameras that do though.

Be aware there will be a bit of a lag as the vid has to be processes and
fly around here and there. A baby monitor might be better, cam and
screen, I think some of those do 2-way voice.

Seems like an OK unit. Came in a plain box with instruction pamphlet

and a charger. I'll see if the night vision works tonight but I think it
might not work inside a window as it has IR LEDs I think so they will
probably reflect back.

I can see it on a web browser and on my ipad, iphone and an old iphone

I just use mostly as a music/streaming device now. Just download the app,
set up an acct with a name, email, and password, connect to the cam and
you're good ta go. It has a network jack on it but I have it set up on
wifi. Others can see it too if they set up the app and you give them a
password or link to the cam or something. I set the motion detection at
LOW (it has 4 or 5 settings) and in testing it I got an email with 2
snapped pics attached, that is pretty cool -- you can see whatever it is
that triggered it then connect to the live view and see what's going on
from wherever you are. I think it does alerts on your phone too, I haven't
tried that yet. All in all very simple and a good set of features.

I think I might find one of those cheap tablets with a bigger screen to

set up as a monitor so I can see the live view from the kitchen -- they
have an Android app too. Anyone want to donate one?

Check the price for a new sensor, I think I paid about $30 for MB real deal,

I prefer using grease. Like wheel bearing grease. The RTV
or silicon caulk doesn't seem to do as well - at least it
didn't years ago when I tried using both to seal a video
connection out in the weather. I used tape, not heat shrink,
and was attempting to weather proof the BNC connector joint.
The grease joint was the only one that survive more than a
year.

I have been using grease to seal power and signal connections
from air and water for quite a few years now, and I haven't
found anything that works better.

A soldered western-union type joint with grease and shrink
tube is my favorite. Kinda slow, though.

If you have a marine (boating) store handy, Ancor makes heat-shrink crimp
connectors that include a heat-activated sealant. They are pricey but very
effective. Probably no more effective than Curley's silicone but easier to
use and they store indefinitely. Great for harsh environments, like a wet
bilge.

Re: [MBZ] OT web cam and cheap tablet

2015-07-13 Thread Andrew Strasfogel via Mercedes
Great work, guys.

So here is my scenario. Doorbell rings. I want to look at know who's at
the front door from an upstairs office in the rear corner of the house.
How do I access the video feed? Can I do it on my computer or smart phone
or both? How about a walkie-talkie set up so I can speak from upstairs to
whoever is ringing the bell, without bothering to go downstairs?

No.

Central European Bank is broken and lacks the necessary elements to fix
it's problems. The member countries lack the industrial output to raise
capital to support it further. The majority of the EU members are bankrupt
on or near the same scale as Greece.

Yet another example of how well socialism only works as long as there is a
good supply of other peoples money to spend.

To be repeated in USA, soon...

Take note of the long lines at Greek ATM machines which will only dispense
$67.00 per customer, per day, for now..

WITH MONEY THE BANKS STOLE FROM CUSTOMERS' SAFE DEPOSIT BOXES!

Re: [MBZ] OT web cam and cheap tablet

2015-07-13 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
The Linksys 932 and 933 wireless models work well for this sort of thing and
are close in price. Linksys has a nice application that lets you view multiple
cameras on the same screen, too.

I have three of these around the exterior of the house, and I'm pleased with
them. I'm surprised at the IR visibility, as it's pretty good considering the
distances involved and the light levels.

The one on my lanai is inside the screen, so it won't "see" beyond the screen
with the IR. That being said, the motion detection part can see past the
screen, and it appears to trigger when wildlife goes by, but I can't see it.

None of mine are rated for outdoor use, but I have them mounted in protected
areas (under eaves) that are exposed to the elements. No problems for a year
now.

Re: [MBZ] On Your Next Visit to Frankfurt...

2015-07-13 Thread Rich Thomas via Mercedes
That is the last tranche, I'm sure it will work out no better than the
others. The Greeks are hopeless. The Euro "leaders" are more worried
that the banks will take a big hit for their stupid decisions, and that
is their main concern. Then you have Italy, Spain, and Portugal right
behind them, and whatever is going on with the Chinese and Iranians for
whom Jean Kerre is now bending over.

Interesting times.

Seems like an OK unit. Came in a plain box with instruction pamphlet

it might not work inside a window as it has IR LEDs I think so they will
probably reflect back.

I can see it on a web browser and on my ipad, iphone and an old iphone I
just use mostly as a music/streaming device now.
I think it does alerts on your phone too, I

[MBZ] ot hvac question

2015-07-13 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin via Mercedes
Did some googling but have not found anything on my exact issue. On my heat
pump / ac system last night I notice it would run, shut off and sometimes kick
back on less than a minute later. And sometimes would kick on and blow for
about 30 seconds then kick off again. I am not sure what the outside unit was
doing. So today I am working in my office and the programmable thermostat is
set to raise the temp to something like 78 during the day. The inside temp is
currently about 74 but about 3 times at seemingly random the inside unit will
kick on and blow for about 30 seconds the turn off. The outside unit does not
turn on when this happens. It should not be turning in since the set temp is
higher than the actual temp. Is this some sort of issue with the thermostat, or
the system? Or is this some sort of normal deal? Maybe it turns on to clear out
moisture on the inside unit or something? Heck I don't know never seen such a
thing before.

Curly, et all.I'm not a fan of standard butt connectors, they are unsealed and
prone to holding moisture thus causing hidden corrosion. The heat sealable butt
connectors seem to work well, may try to use some or not depending on what I
find.Gee, it's dark and dirty in here.TTFN.

I found a refurb Belkin Netcam on Amazon for cheepcheep, arrived this
morning, took about 3min to set it up, works great. You can set motion
sensing at various levels, sends an email when it detects some motion.
Can view on various devices. Easy and cheap solution.

I guess I will abandon the old one, or find the setup software and see
if i can see it on a winders box.

it, somehow. I have an old Android phone and an old ifone too, there
is a VLC app for the phones and ipad, so I am wondering if that might
work somehow. If I could get it working then I could buy one of those
$50 tablets and have a continuous monitor. THere might be some other
apps too, I have not looked into it.

I have an application called TinyCam (Android) that does this, no idea
whether it will support your camera. I have also heard of IP Cam and
Quick Cam (I think). There are another hundred of these apps in the
store, many of them hardware specific, if the generic ones don't
work. I assume the Apple store is similarly blessed with options.

I would not bother with VLC for this use, at least on Android. I
expect one of the aforementioned apps will work more conveniently.

Best,
Tim

Sounds like someone hacked it or the connector caused problems
before. sounds like cutting out and replacing the butt connectors is
the place to begin.

I like filling shrink tubing with clear silicone seal over the
connector, then shrink the tubing to make a watertight (hopefully)
repair. That is how I rig trailer lights. Never had any trouble
related to connectors with that method. I used to solder all the
wire joints on trailers.

Alles. There appears to be a long thin-ish wire from drivers to pass.
side right behind the engine with what looks like a taped-up trio of
butt connectors in line.Spelunking begin!

 Fred,

The two pin connector for the tachometer sensor is, as Peter said,
behind engine. I'm pretty sure it is passenger side, between
battery and HVAC/windshield wiper box. If you follow wire from
sensor, should be about three feet to get to the connector. Sensor
is driver side, near starter. You'll probably need to remove the
air/water ducting and rubber seals on the top of the firewall.
