I wonder if the replacement will work on a big OM372. The one on the Pisten
Bully leaks terribly when in use. Seems fine when locked down though.

Is it possibly the original “mushroom” style pump with the white plastic knob

If it’s the original version I would change it to the updated pump on principle.

In a pinch you can re-seal the originals. My 2006 notes on the 240D we had:

Had a look at the manual fuel primer pump. Not as leaky as I'd
thought. A little exercise seems to have helped it out too. I pulled
it off and had a closer look at it. Really quite a simple device.
The big worry is that if it leaks fuel when you use it it's in danger
of leaking air when you're not using it, and causing starting or
running problems as a result. The knob on top screws down against a
sealing ring that's on the shaft of the pump, it's very easy to see
how it works and what kind of condition it's in (when off the engine
that is). The air seal on this one was marginal, but still intact.
Figuring that it was worth a shot, I got out my gasket punch set and
punched a clean 3/4" hole in a sheet of Buna-N rubber scrap I got
from a supply house. (They couldn't figure out how to sell me such a
small piece, yet it's probably a lifetime supply for my needs.) Then
I cut out a circle around this, with scissors (the OD is non-critical)
and substituted this for the very tired seal that was on the pump.
Fits fine, and works fine too. That should reset the clock on that
pump.

I beg to differ. Not brilliance, experience.

I’m amazed that one of the mushroom style pumps is still in service. Those
things have gone the way of CRT TVs from what I know.

Thankfully, an easy fix. Swap it out and all should be well regardless of how
the car is parked.

Re: [MBZ] 300SD Misc. Bits Available

2016-06-27 Thread Robin Midgett via Mercedes
It's odd that some folks have trouble while others do not when it comes to
sharing files on Google Drive.
If there are particular pieces you're interested in, I'll send the photos
directly. You can also find most of these up for sale on eBay; my seller ID
is remidgett.

The 300SD is a model in which I am interested, but I don't have one yet.

I don't know if anyone on the list does have one. Dan Penoff recently
bought a W126, but I don't recall which model it is.

Welcome to the list, Robin.

The 300SD is a model in which I am interested, but I don't have one yet.

I don't know if anyone on the list does have one. Dan Penoff recently
bought a W126, but I don't recall which model it is.

Had that happen a number of years ago. Turned out that the piston did

use a C-clamp to push in the piston; tightening it slowly and keeping it

I compressed the pistons on both sides with a C-clamp, one side had
quite a bit of clearance when I put the new pads/rotor on, the other one
seemed compressed all the way (at least it would not go any further and
there was not much of the pistons showing) but was a really tight fit (I
had to persuade it a bit).

I have the ABS fuse pulled as the control unit failed with the motor
on and it was draining the battery. I tried to get at the controller
as it appears a resoldering will fix it, but the thing is just about
inaccessible, right about a frame rail under the body floor under driver
seat. Hoses look OK but I was thinking I should probably change those
too. I have to do another 100k service now at 200k miles, so brake
fluid change is on that list.

what model, I guess the newest one. It was gorgeous. The transporter
had another inside with the front end smashed and 4 others back in there

crazy and hot. I could spin the wheel but it was hard, so I am thinking it
just needs to wear down the pads a bit? I had fully compressed the pistons
so not sure what the problem was. The other one went on fine with a bit of
clearance, both rotors appear to be the same but I am thinking I should
measure them and make sure the one is the proper thickness. Any ideas?

Re: [MBZ] 300SD, Ferrari. and Suburban brake question

2014-02-09 Thread Dieselhead
Gorgeous day today, 60F+ so I got the boy's 300SD sorted and washed
and plated and it is back on the road for mama as the girl took her
300SD. Runs well, a few niggles to deal with.

I was doing some test ride to make sure it was running OK and went
up the road to a small shopping center and a Ferrari transporter was
pulling into the lot, from central Florida Ferrari. I drove around
a bit and came back and they had unloaded a maroon Ferrari, I don't
know what model, I guess the newest one. It was gorgeous. The
transporter had another inside with the front end smashed and 4
others back in there too. The Ferrari dude looked quite happy, had
some of his posse with him. He looked vaguely like Ralph Lipshitz
(Lauren) but it wasn' t Ralphie.

I replaced the rear rotors and pads on the Suburban, one set of pads
had plum woe out and metal on metal was Not Good. That side was
extremely difficult to get the pads and caliper back on --too tight
--, and during my drive to bed them in a bit it is very clearly
dragging and stinking like crazy and hot. I could spin the wheel
but it was hard, so I am thinking it just needs to wear down the
pads a bit? I had fully compressed the pistons so not sure what the
problem was. The other one went on fine with a bit of clearance,
both rotors appear to be the same but I am thinking I should measure
them and make sure the one is the proper thickness. Any ideas?

I've spent a great deal of time in northern Europe over the past 8 years, and
all of the older classic Benzes have rusted away to nothing. There is a strong
demand over there for rust free cars from the US south and southwest.

So it goes from a German working in the US to a German in Germany.  Its
 going back home to Stuttgart.

Yup. We eat our young, sometimes.

However, is the list to blame? You provided a craigslist link with
a very simple introduction.
Here is the ad for the 300SD I mentioned in the past:

I, for one, did not go back and see what else you may have said
earlier. So with no more reference than one I mentioned I took
it to be just another craigslist ad. So why did you expect the
list to treat it any different than any other posted ad?

Now, if you said, I know this to be a good car. or I know the
seller and the car. then I think you could have reason to
complain. As it is, it seems to me to be too late to be
complaining.

Re: [MBZ] 300SD available

2013-08-28 Thread Curt Raymond
Do they actually want somebody to buy it or are they just fishing for price?

That ad is uninspiring. Theres not enough text on whats good about the car and
not enough pictures. Craigslist lets you post 6 pics and you could always link
to a photobucket or other folder with more. More pictures shows you (they) have
nothing to hide. I find the lack of engine pics disturbing.

I also seem to remember you mentioning that the AC doesn't work. I'd generally
consider they fact that its not mentioned in the ad a red flag. If you're not
telling me about that up front what else are you not telling me?

Lots of clean cars up here in Northern NJ. Not everyone goes out and
drives behind salt trucks when it snows. Wealthy owners often had several
cars which means most of them sat in the garage.

And whilst we are critiquing, me no likey those headlights and the

2013-08-28 Thread Michael Canfield
No doubt. One of the nicest cars I ever owned was a Volvo 240 that spent
it's life over a floor drain in a parking garage in Newark. A lawyer's
second car. Only spot of rust was a softball sized hole in the floor,
right over where the drain was. I bought it true mileage unknown and later
found out the odometer had been changed at the factory because it was
faulty with 8 miles on the car. The odometer read 24,*** miles when I got
it for a mere $2200. A 25k mile Volvo might as well be new.

Re: [MBZ] 300SD battery/alternator problem

2013-08-09 Thread Rich Thomas
Well now the mech tells her that he has poked around and it has
confounded him. He found that the glow plug relay stays on for some
period after the car starts, which he somehow thinks is causing the
battery to run down. Some mention was made of a red wire coming from a
box going to short, but I am not sure which red wire or box. The girl
was going to find out, and take the car to the Benz shop next door.

It is clear the guy is not familiar with the car, guess I can't blame
him. The GPR is fairly new as are the glow plugs, so I doubt if that is
the problem. And even if it does stay on awhile that would not drain
the battery, unless it is stuck even with the key off, somehow.

She says the light comes on, so that should be OK -- in any case I don't
think that would drain the battery.

I gotta get this other car sorted and get it up to her and get this one
back.

Kinda funny, there is one like 2 doors down from her new apartment. I might
send her there.

She had this guy do the alternator a coupla weeks ago before she moved so
that is why I told her to go back there. I'm thinking that might not have
been the actual problem, maybe a bad wire or connection or short or
something.

You need to get it away from that mechanic before he has your harness
cut, spliced and f'ed up. He has no clue what he is doing. The glow plugs
should do that. They have in every one I have owned.

Garages these days! Can't even find one around here that can balance tires
right. Literally, weights fell off the last time.

Re: [MBZ] 300SD battery/alternator problem

2013-08-09 Thread Scott Ritchey

It is normal for newer (pencil-style) glow plugs to stay on for a couple
minutes after engine start. This produces smoother and cleaner idle until
the engine warms up. On older cars (like my 82)the alternator isn't big
enough to supply all the load for those few minutes so some battery
discharge occurs but it is quickly recharged in a mile or two. But it is
quite possible for the glow logic to stick or fail, which would drain the
battery even with a good alternator. A couple voltage checks at the battery
would be in order. Like I mentioned, a free quick check at Autozone,
Advanced, Pep, etc. will tell you if the alternator and battery are working
right. They have a cart they wheel out to your car and it only takes 10
minutes if they aren't busy.

I had the glow plug relay in my Volvo TD stick, and it would run the
battery down while driving with the headlights on! They draw 80 amps,
as a rule, and that's a BIG drain on the alternator.

Benz shop is the place to take it.

[MBZ] 300SD battery/alternator problem

2013-08-07 Thread Rich Thomas
The daughter unit is using the Mamabenz for awhile. A coupla weeks ago
the battery went dead. She gets it to the shop she uses, he says the
alternator is bad, sends it to the alternator shop. I told them to just
replace the regulator, which they did, A-OK. They also swapped in a new
Interstate battery at no cost, which was not very old, said it was
showing low ooomf. Good enough.

So a coupla days ago, battery is dead, no starty. She gets a jump, runs
fine no problem, starts a few times OK then battery goes dead again.
Gets it back to her shop, they send it to the alt shop who say after
some fooling around that there is one wire from the alternator, which if
they remove it from the 4-wire box everything is fine. But they do not
go further to see why that wire is a problem. They send it back to the
mech who says he will try to trace it and figure out what is wrong. He
would try to find a wiring diagram.

I told the girl to find out which wire from which box is bad, i.e., what
color wire. If I can find the wiring diagram on the 126 CD somewhere I
can try to figure out where it is going, and go out and look at the
other SD and see what it might be. Problem is I can't find a wiring
diagram on the CD -- I am guessing there should be one on there, right?
I found a junction box chapter (54-110) but no schematic.

Anyone have ideas re: The Wire and The Schematic?

I found the wiring diagrams hidden in ETM (an incredibly intuitive
location) named 126td83-85.pdf which might or might not assist.

I am not sure what the guy meant by 4 wires coming from a box, it must
not be the alternator circuit as there are only 3 wires shown.
