Hm ... perhaps the source would be at the center of the general area.
That is, of course, if the general area is not overly broad to disguise
the location of the source.

During hunting season I noticed that Google Maps is quite accurate for walking
around in the woods. Often I use it in conjunction with my compass.Google Earth
on the other hand seems to have a 1/4 mile offset that I have been unable to
figure out. Its always got me mislocated and is thus useless in the woods.
As I often walk out out of cell service I was hoping Google Earth would work
better than it does.

Shirley had a dental appointment today so we were in northwest
Albuquerque. After her appointment, I programmed the GPS to find the
quickest way to the Fleet Pride store in downtown Albuquerque and we
were off (you have to be off to do this kind of thing!  :-) ).

As we were driving east on Paseo del Norte, I heard the GPS saying,
"Recalculating!" several times. Then I noticed I was going slower than
the speed limit of 60 mph -- the GPS said 52. I accelerated and noticed
the GPS said 48. I then looked down at the speedometer (it was after
sunset and I had the lights on so the speedometer needle was easy to
see). It said we were going 65!

I slowed down and push the button on the GPS to return to the map
display. It showed the vehicle about 500' north of the roadway and going
on neighborhood roads instead of on the freeway! When we crossed the Rio
Grande (where there are no neighborhood roads parallel to the freeway!)
it decided we were on the freeway afterall.

We got off on the left side of the freeway, turned right, and went under
the eastbound lanes and stopped at a stoplight with a clear view of the
sky. I looked at the GPS's map and saw it said we were about 500' west of
our actual location. This continued as we headed south on 2nd street.

I thought this was rather odd, having never seen anything like this
before.

It could have been caused by someone transmitting locally on GPS
frequencies, but those are predominantly line-of-sight and we had
travelled a few miles and were on the other side of a freeway
overpass's earth berm. In addition, after a while it started working
correctly again.

It occurred to me it could have been due to the Department of Defense
turning on Selective Availabilty (which has been off for several years).

Anyway, I first noticed the wierdness about 1640 MST (2340Z).

You are correct three satellites are needed to establish a fix, but there
are something like 19 satellites in the constellation and there are
typically 5 visible at any time.

It could be because of satellite position.
GPS [I believe it still does] relies on signal from 3 satellites to
establish it's coordinates.
It could have been a situation where one or more of the needed signals were
over the horizon and your Dash GPS was not getting coordinate information
to do it's internal calculations. Temporary triangulation loss.

[MBZ] GPS

2020-01-09 Thread Craig via Mercedes
Since the BRV's speedometer is recessed in the dash and since it reads
high when it is cold, I have been using our GPS as a speedometer for some
time now.

I have an old Garman that was becoming increasingly unable to lock onto
the satellites to get a position fix. Google showed this to a rather
common problem for that model, and I found a tutorial or a utuber vid
that showed how to solder a jumper on the circuit board to fix it. I
did that and it worked better for awhile but then started acting up
again. I finally just bought a new one and this one works fine but it
keeps annoying me about the maps. I think it is not under the free map
update program, I haven't tried, I never remember to bring the thing in
from the truck to fool with it.

I'd say spend the $100 on a new one and be done with it.

Now that is interesting.
I had wondered if putting a new battery in might be sufficient to bring

Might be worth a try for what it would cost.

My TomTom XXL cooks its battery. I suspect it just has overvoltage protection
instead of a real smart charge circuit.
One time last winter I left it plugged in for a couple of days and now the
3 year old battery is totally useless instead of mostly useless (life had
dwindled to about 30 minutes before the last overcharging, now it's less than
ten minutes, was 2-3 hours when new).

Re: [MBZ] GPS?

2015-09-09 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
It's been my experience with rechargeable batteries that as they reach
their cycle limits, their ability to take a charge declines, thus the
charging circuit tries to "push charge" ... and the battery fails to hold
it, so the conflict between the dying battery and the over worked charger
presents a "no win" for either one.

I would suggest a new battery is an easy fix, before it also "cooks the
charge circuit".

[MBZ] GPS?

2015-09-08 Thread Randy Bennell via Mercedes

a friend has a TomTom GPS unit that is not working.
It is several years old and has not been used often.
He is planning on a road trip starting on Friday and has been trying to
get it to work.

No luck. It won't do much but fire up and then quit.

A brief google search suggests they are junk and a lot of them have this
sort of issue.
Anyone have any good advice to pass along apart from what I already
said, which was to toss it and go buy a new Garmin?

The advantage in a stand-alone GPS is when you have no data service out in the
sticks. Your phone GPS can't think for itself, it phones home for the actual

A very short time later the regional supervisor calls me, tells me he is

What kind of phone? On my Windows Mobile I have the TomTom

with a dock for my Treo, which died long ago) and have been
surprisingly
pleased, and no Navigon = no cell provider fee. It is a prettier

forget
it in the car, too. Directions are more reliable than our Ford

and I think you can order updates from the TT web site. The new
version
supports gas prices, traffic, etc. off the TT site but of course
I'm too

Eventually I splurged and got a dock for the new phone (from the

I just

stuck it on the dash in front of the speedometer. :)

2010-03-18 Thread Greg Fiorentino
Why Garmin?

I have been a Magellan handheld GPS owner for 8 years or so, and a member of
an active Magellan mailing list for about that long. At the time my wife
bought the Meridian Gold for me it was arguably the best technology out
there. It is good hardware and still useful. Customer service and support
for the unit from Magellan is execrable!!! Garmin, OTOH has very good
support. The NUVI itself is very good and just works. Without the online
community the old Magellan would be nearly worthless. BTW, all the
knowledgeable members of the Magellan Meridian list sadly acknowledge that
Garmin, not Magellan now makes the best stuff. There might be other units
out there with written descriptions that look like they have better
features, but experienced GPS users will tell you that Garmin is the company
that makes the best stuff now and definitely provides better support.

My only connection with the company is as a very satisfied customer (and
that the wife happens to be a Kansan).

For those who don't know, OGA is the term used in intelligence circles for
the agency whose name must not be spoken.

Re: [MBZ] GPS (again)

2010-03-17 Thread Rich Thomas
I think most of them talk these days, even the ones that are like $100.
You want to check if they announce turns with sufficient notice to
actually make the turn. There are basically 2 map providers (or it
might be one now, one of them got bought by some other company a few
months back) so you (maybe) have a choice, but in any case I would get
the one with lifetime updates. The more expensive ones have bluetooth
and all kinds of other things (plug in cards to play music, etc.) which
are mostly unnecessary. You can get a couple of screen sizes and some
of them show a 3D view.

Garmin and TomTom seem to be the leading providers though there are some
other brands out there, both seem to be pretty good if you get the right
features. I had a problem with my Garmin I ended up doing brain surgery
on it (out of warranty) to get it working, but when the mount socket
broke they sent me a new one, no questions asked after maybe 2-3 years.
You could probably find a used on on CL fairly cheap.

Internal batteries maybe have a couple hours capacity, you really need
to plug them in.

My family have several Garmins, at less than $100 from egghead or Amazon.
They do the job well. Lifetime map upgrades would be nice (pretty
expensive, I think), but I think maps are very useable for 5 years or more.
By that time technology usually obsoletes models. I had to use their
customer service once. An intelligent human in Olathe KS answered right
away and set me to rights quickly. Battery life is a few hours, plug in to
lighter required for longer trips.

Re: [MBZ] GPS (again)

2010-03-17 Thread Dieselhead
We looked at squallmart Tomtom is made in india, Magellan is Kalif.
and Garmin is KC Magellan had the most info on the box, and seemed
to be the best value there. (139) Vs garmin at 169 and tomtom at 139.
I ruled out the cheaper ones that say turn right over a block before
you get to the street. the $140 to 170 range gets you one that sez,
turn right at Striplin St. rather than turn right. I can see
where that can save a lot of time. (provided there are actual street
signs in the area.)

None of those had lifetime updates.

I think most of them talk these days, even the ones that are like
$100. You want to check if they announce turns with sufficient
notice to actually make the turn. There are basically 2 map
providers (or it might be one now, one of them got bought by some
other company a few months back) so you (maybe) have a choice, but
in any case I would get the one with lifetime updates. The more
expensive ones have bluetooth and all kinds of other things (plug in
cards to play music, etc.) which are mostly unnecessary. You can
get a couple of screen sizes and some of them show a 3D view.

Garmin and TomTom seem to be the leading providers though there are
some other brands out there, both seem to be pretty good if you get
the right features. I had a problem with my Garmin I ended up doing
brain surgery on it (out of warranty) to get it working, but when
the mount socket broke they sent me a new one, no questions asked
after maybe 2-3 years. You could probably find a used on on CL
fairly cheap.

Internal batteries maybe have a couple hours capacity, you really
need to plug them in.

The best prices I found were at Amazon.com.

I was told that the maps supplied with the units are not up to date.
That to update them it will cost an additional 70-100 dollars, not a
free update to the purchaser. Is that true?

The maps most likely will be out-of-date, but with the Garmin units, you
get one free map update in the 30 days after you register the unit (which
you should do to update the GPS' operating system).

 I have two requirements.
I've used a Garmin StreetPilot for several years, big and clunky, G.P.S.
Function only. Mine model has a remote control which is very handy. Kind of
pricey in it's day. Maps cost about $150 to update, which I do every other
year.
I just bought a Refurb Magellon from Tiger for $89, for my wives car, as with
all electronics the thing has improved about 200% over mine. MAps are in 3D,
making it very user friendly for her.
I specifically do not want a multifunction unit, just GPS function.

I don't give a spit for turn by turn so it works great for me. I especially
like it when I've got directions and I'm starting to wonder did I miss my
turn? Dial in the map to the right zoom level and I can tell...

un-realistic speeds and distances. Like the time I took it on our
evening walk arouond the neighborhood, and at one point it read 450MPH
for a couple of miles and back. It logged the max speed of the '92

not talk or tell me where to turn, just where I am, and where I've
been.

You need to be careful about a GPS on the motorcycle -- vibrations are
not good for the unit, bright sunlight, and the mount needs to be much
more sturdy than what the car mount is. I think Garmin has some
specifically for motorcycles. I think all the units pretty much use the
same map set.

I have a Garmin 750 or 950 or something like that, it does everything.

I have never owned a GPS. Want to fix that.

 I have two requirements.
I've used a Garmin StreetPilot for several years, big and clunky, G.P.S.
Function only. Mine model has a remote control which is very handy. Kind
of pricey in it's day. Maps cost about $150 to update, which I do every
other year.
I just bought a Refurb Magellon from Tiger for $89, for my wives car, as
with all electronics the thing has improved about 200% over mine. MAps are
in 3D, making it very user friendly for her.
I specifically do not want a multifunction unit, just GPS function.

[MBZ] GPS question

2008-09-04 Thread Wonko the Sane
I have never owned a GPS. Want to fix that.

I have two requirements.

1. Anal-retentive as I am, I would like to get a true mph reading so I know
how far off my speedometers are. This is hopefully cheap.

2. I want turn-by-turn directions -- or at least a good map -- to drive
around in new surroundings. Would need to have maps available for rural
areas such as Iowa, not just big cities.

What should I get for requirement #1, and can I move up to requirement #2
for not that much more money?

We had a map thing in the HH-3F (late 1970s) -- you put a paper map on the

your route and position.

Hard to believe that Loran C was the baddest kid on the block in those days
-- the plane I flew in (nav position) still used Loran A.

Re: [MBZ] GPS question

2008-09-04 Thread Bill R
Don - My first was a CF card GPS [about $100 8 or 9 year agoi] that would
work on MS streets and trips with my laptop. I don't think it would do MPH,
but never tried. I used it with my handheld Pocket PC. Second was a Garmin
ColorMap for $22 at a Salvation Army store. It did fine with the MPH and
map, but could have used better maps - which would have cost many times the
price of the unit. It would eat a set of batteries in no time, so a car
adaptor was a necessity. My current one is a TomTom built into my IPAQ
RX5915. Detailed maps of the entire US, down to some of the dirt roads, is
built in - about 2G worth, with [thus far] free updates every year or so. I
buy mine from eBay and get the warranty because I often am using it 2 -4
hours a day. It does voice turn by turn and gives about all the information
you might want, plus is a great hand held computer. I wear it on a belt
clip and have a bag in the car with a Bluetooth keyboard and a Bluetooth
mouse so I can use MS Office Mobile and any number of other programs and
games, and listen to music and watch videos on it. Great for folks who
travel a lot - like I did for a lot of years. That unit is selling on eBay
for about $300 - though if you want the separate keyboard and mouse they are
aftermarket - I have done a lot of writing with mine. It also has built in
WIFI to connect to the internet. IT should be possible to mate it with a
Bluetooth phone and not need to find a hot spot, which would also give you
access to the advanced features of the TOmTom.

Where I routinely flew (100/150 miles east of Cape Cod, at or below 100
feet) I couldn't get a whole lot of radar fixes on land. We zigged and
zagged too much for dead reckoning. I could DR fine if necessary (home was
always west of us and there would be an airport somewhere) but my fixes --
we were enforcing fishery zone treaties against those evil Russians and
Japanese factory ships -- had to be taken into court and I had to swear that
I was accurate when I signed the court documents. If I remember, I was
required to be +/- one mile in my fixes. That's tough moving at 130 knots
when you have to pull down two separate Loran A fixes as quickly as
possible. ... These days, you'd just look at the GPS receiver. Wasn't like
that in the 1970s.

Re: [MBZ] GPS question

2008-09-04 Thread Wonko the Sane
Actually, I want it more for places like Des Moines and Minneapolis.

However, it would be nice to just get on the motorcycle and ride
newly-discovered county roads without keeping track of where I am -- then
look down and know exactly where I am. I don't like popping out on a major
road then having to stop, pull out a map, and see where I am and where I
should go next.

If I am going to buy, I want coverage locally as well as in the cities.

Plus, I've always liked toys.

Re: [MBZ] GPS question

2008-09-04 Thread Curt Raymond
Thats what my etrex showed when we were there. On mine I can load additional
maps though... Mine also doesn't show much in LA so I'm thinking somewhere
along the line I deleted the maps west of the Mississippi.

I get loads of resolution around here.

Garmin eTrex Legend, it'll do good mapping and speed/course/etc, in fact about
any decent low cost GPS will do that. Turn by turn is a bit more spendy. I like
mine because its small and handy for hiking and whatnot.

Re: [MBZ] GPS question

2008-09-04 Thread OK Don
Our etrex Legend does OK for navigating, has helped us find our way
around new territory, but has a nasty habit of posting occasional
un-realistic speeds and distances. Like the time I took it on our
evening walk arouond the neighborhood, and at one point it read 450MPH
for a couple of miles and back. It logged the max speed of the '92
300D 2.5T at 612MPH on one trip. Other wise, it does the job. It does
not talk or tell me where to turn, just where I am, and where I've
been.
This is on my want list --
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B000UX9YJ0/ref=ord_cart_shr?_encoding=UTF8m=ATVPDKIKX0DERv=glance

It's gone up in price recently, but is supposed to be an older model,
what's up with that? Is the $ slipping again?

[MBZ] GPS Tracking Suggestions

2008-07-09 Thread LWB250
I have a customer who is now requiring any supplier who charges travel time and
mileage to be able to provide GPS track data for each call to verify mileage
charges.

While this is a PITA, it's the way things are going, so I've got to deal with
it.

I have neither the need or budget for a full-blown vehicle tracking system, so
that's out of the question. I was thinking more along the lines of a mapping
GPS, or even better, one of the smaller handheld devices (like the Garmin eTrex
Vista I have for backpacking.) My Garmin records tracks whenever it's on, and
I use it on both my car and motorcycle to record my travels.

I was thinking about getting some of the Garmin handhelds to be mounted on a
windshield mount for each truck, which can be easily removed and the data
downloaded to a PC for passing along to the customer.

I could justify a mapping GPS for each vehicle if necessary, but my knowledge
of these relative to their ability to track is limited. I know they can give
you routes, but I'm not aware of any that actually record vehicle movement. My
guys get detailed directions to each site, so it's not really necessary for
them to have a mapping GPS, either.

Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated

Dan

Re: [MBZ] GPS Tracking Suggestions

2008-07-09 Thread dave walton
I use Delorme Street Atlas on a laptop with a generic USB GPS dongle I
got off eBay for $15 (with shipping). Whenever the GPS is enabled, it
records your movement to a datafile. A Garmin would be much easier to
deal with, but lacks the routing features. If your guys are already
carrying a laptop around, adding a GPS to it would be cheap and easy.
You can get old versions of Street Atlas on eBay that work fine for
$0.01 - $0.99 + shipping. The older versions load and run faster, but
have a less elegant user interface and don't automatically re-route
you if you go off-route.

I have neither the need or budget for a full-blown vehicle
tracking system, so that's out of the question. I was
thinking more along the lines of a mapping GPS, or even
better, one of the smaller handheld devices (like the Garmin
eTrex Vista I have for backpacking.) My Garmin records tracks
whenever it's on, and I use it on both my car and motorcycle
 to record my travels.

I was thinking about getting some of the Garmin handhelds to

easily removed and the data downloaded to a PC for passing

I could justify a mapping GPS for each vehicle if necessary,
but my knowledge of these relative to their ability to track
is limited. I know they can give you routes, but I'm not
aware of any that actually record vehicle movement. My guys
get detailed directions to each site, so it's not really
necessary for them to have a mapping GPS, either.

Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated

Memory capacity could be a big deal. The type of track needed
will also matter. The more data points, the more memory needed.
I'm not familiar with the handheld GPS units, but I understand
that many of them have the option of time, distance, or
deviation to set a track point.

A map on the receiver is not necessary since the track is just a
list of time-lat-lon points.

The data could be canned too. Let Google figure out the
distance, convert that to a .gpx route, convert that to a track
(gpsbabel is amazing), remove all the time stamps. Ta da! Mileage
log without ever going there. *grin*

Dan - My IPAQ rx5915 Has a built in TomTom, which seems to have that
capability. Recently I have seen several add-on programs offered that do
the GPS tracking you are looking for, so I am assuming that some or many of
the small GPS units can be set up to do that sort of thing. I have not tried
any of them myself as the plain TomTom is all I need. Probably it would be
simplest to go with a unit that has the capability already built in [far
fewer 'it didn't work right's', but the recently offered programs might
increase your pool of possible units. I had a CF card GPS that plugged into
a hand held computer or my laptop and worked with MS Streets and Trips,
which could certainly be configured to do what you need. Wish I knew more,
but someone on here probably does.

That domain name is registered with Network Solutions using the
Private Registration option which shields the owner from releasing
their contact information. I know of no legit Banking or Credit Card
companies who do that. Do you have any indication that that site is
not a front to obtain financial information for nefarious purposes?
Their dns chain leads to Greg Hart, 14897 Seven Oaks Lane, Draper, UT
, 84020, US, +1.8015711075, [EMAIL PROTECTED] . I find it hard to
believe that Discover Card Services would use some guy in Utah to run
their DNS Servers.

Sounds too good to be true.

The card companies pay real money for referrals. I got $80 cash from
Cardoffers.com for a couple of Discover applications last year, and cardoffers
probably kept most of the money for themselves.

I would certainly be careful of what info I disclose on the referring site
before I made it to the discovercard site, but you do have to give the
referring
site enough info to put your payoff in your hands.

Lots of discussion on this particular offer here:

The fact that the FatWallet discussion has been going on since May
makes me think the offer is legit.
Still not sure I want to risk giving them all my personal info, so
I'll probably sign my wife up first and see how it goes :-)

I also like mine best when used in conjunction with Mapquest (google and yahoo
maps are useless in New England). I really like knowing I haven't yet passed

I also have the etrex legend - wife got it for my birthday this year
so we could find out what we really want in a GPS. It worked great on
our trip to CT, PA, AR, and back this summer. We used mapquest maps
for the trip, but the GPS came in really handy when we missed turns,
turned at the wrong place, and when the road names on the map didn't
match those on the sign post. The etrex legend is a fun little toy,
but I haven't tried to program a trip into it, and haven't bought the
Garmen maps for it. I'm going to try using it to feed coordinates to
Streets and Trips running on a Tablet PC - that ought to give a form
factor that's more car friendly than a laptop, with a screen that's
large enough to see.

I got a Garmin Nuvi 680 recently and really like it. It is fast to
recompute, has lots of cool features, big screen, and good battery.
There are lesser-featured Nuvi models for lower prices. I think the
Garmins are highly-rated, some of the Tom-toms too maybe (for much lower
prices). I did some research on them (Amazon.com comments are pretty
good), the one I picked had been rated highly in other reviews as well.

P.S. It would be nice to have one when we drive to the IowaQ, but I guess
I'm too cheap to shell out for one.
