Re: [MSX] Fifa World Cup 2014 and MSX

2014-01-05 Thread Ricardo Jurczyk Pinheiro
SLotman,

It's very difficult to have any MSX meetings near Maracanã Stadium.
Talk is cheap, show us the place... We have UERJ (university), which
isn't exactly cheap to rent a room or two, to a MSX meeting. We used a
room in the Physics' Institute in 1998, and it wasn't exactly pleasant
to us... And the rules to hire any government's space (UERJ belongs to
the Rio de Janeiro's state) to a particular event changed. I tried the
school where my wife works, it's in Vila Isabel, close to Maracanã
Stadium (and a hospital too), but her boss told her that today is
nearly impossible.

In the beginning of 2013, people from SESC Engenho de Dentro (which
rents a room for us with a reasonable price) told me that they won't
rent that room anymore, due to changes in the room's shape. So, we
started again to find another place to have our MSX meetings, the
MSXRio. I found a very nice school, near Maracanã. It's a secondary
school (Colégio Graham Bell), a bit more expensive than SESC Engenho
de Dentro, but it's near metro and train stations, and close to
Maracanã Stadium. We had 2 meetings there, in 2013. But the teachers'
co-op which manages the school are in a quarrel with the union who
owns the school. As the director said to me, maybe by the end of 2014
we can have the MSX meeting again in Graham Bell, but it's too
difficult to talk about dates.

Finally, we got a big room in SESC Madureira, which is far from the
centre (even more far than Engenho de Dentro), but maybe it's the best
place that we'll have since 1997. And it's close to most of the
MSX-freaks' homes. So, if anybody wants to hire a MSX meeting during
the World Cup in Rio, please tell me, I think I can handle a fifth
meeting in SESC Madureira. Our dates are:

15th February (Saturday)
2nd and 3rd May (Friday and Saturday, after Labor Day - holiday).
18th October (Saturday)

RetroRio (which is like MSXRio but it's not MSX restricted) will be
held in the same place by 16th August.

Hope everybody can come to one of our meetings, even Slotman, who are
always too busy to attend any MSX meetings. =)

We won't have any meetings during the World Cup. Maybe I'll be in
Europe during this period. (And I'm going to Netherlands too! =D) If
anyone wants to manage this meeting, be my guest, amaze me. ;-)

Hmm... That's all.

Best regards,

Ricardo.

2014/1/5 The MSX Files msxfi...@icongames.com.br:
Some years ago, I posted on MSX.org about doing an international MSX
meeting, during the world cup, so people in Brazil for the WC could meet us
 Fudebas.

The idea I proposed was to take the small break in the World Cup after the
'groups stage' is over (usually a week, so tourists can see the country) and
do the event somewhere near Maracanã Stadium, so it would be somewhere easy
 to be found by tourists...

...the idea was not very well received, and some points raised were actually
very good: mainly prices in general (usually during world cup prices are
much higher than normal for flights, hotels, etc) - and the huge ammount of
people attending to the world cup, making it difficult to get anywhere.

I then gave up on the idea. If someone wants to do it, then by all means, do
it - the way my year started, I'll probably be too busy - maybe even to
attend to an MSX meeting :(

[MSX] little Pascal utility

2005-01-10 Thread Ricardo Jurczyk Pinheiro
Everybody who codes using Pascal knows that, TP3 places a 8kb block in
the beginning of the compiled .COM file.
This block has ALL the basic Pascal routines, like writeln, readln, etc. Well,
fine, but I wanna use MY Asm routines to
write in the screen (faster), I don't need these basic routines.

Sometime in the past I found a little utility which wipes out this
block from the beginning of the COM file, but
I haven't tested already. Does anybody knows its name?

The hard part, however, is actually finding a PC disk drive which can be
used in an MSX. PC drives usually give the Disk Change (DC) signal, while
the MSX needs a Ready (RDY or RY). Similarly, their Drive Select pin has to
be rewired from DS1 to DS0. Anyways, in order to do this you have to open up
the drive, and resolder some 0-ohm resistors, or be even lucky enough to
find a drive with jumpers to do this.

Hmmm... Here in Brazil a friend of mine (Luciano Sturaro) wrote a little guide

PC diskdrive, even these which signal is different. You can find it at

But first let me explain my problem: It's much easier 2 me 2 code into my
Linuxbox (a Duron 700, named Aragorn
into my home LAN), test, and finally run into the MSX, than to code into my Turbo-R
(he's the ring bearer, Frodo!).
Hmm... So, as a TP programmer (sorry C-friends), it would be better to write the code
using joe, nano, pico, vi, emacs,
ed or another Linux text editor, copy it to a diskimage and into fMSX, compile and
execute. No problems until this step.
But TP 3.0 is not a command-line compiler, which makes me lose time,
loading-TP-interface, opening-the-program-into-TP,
compiling-it, etc. Finally, I've tried TP 3.3, which is command-line driven. Wow,
great. But it needs Memman into

Germany. Great for those old CP/M programs that require more TPA, faster
than MSXDOS and a standard ramdisk. The disk image and utilities I made some
years ago are probably still available on the Internet.

And please dont forget SOLX-DOS, the MSX-DOS built by Microsol, Brazil...
Well, they placed MSXDOS.SYS and
COMMAND.COM into a single file, SOLXDOS.SIS.

My fudeba development environment...

2002-02-02 Thread Ricardo Jurczyk Pinheiro

Hi lads,

I'm trying to program for MSX again. I was very 'fluent' in Pascal
before, and I decided to restart my development, using TP3. So, it would be
better to me to develop using my Linux box, with fMSX, and the final tests
were done in my Turbo-R.

I'm using Linux most of the time (95%), and I don't want a Windoze
solution, 'cause I would need to restart my computer only to develop a piece
of MSX code.

I'm trying TP3.3, and it seems to be a nice solution, a command line
compiler would be great. And it needs Memman, no problems... But it can't be
run into fMSX, I've got an error.

So... Memman can't be run into fMSX? Is there another solution?

Thankx 4 any help.

MSX Mailinglist in het Nederlands - yet

2001-09-27 Thread Ricardo Jurczyk Pinheiro

Here in Brazil I noticed some time ago (in 1995) that a
Brazilian MSX mailing list would be a nice way to talk in our mother
tongue about MSX without disturbing the international mailing list.
Maybe our list was the first non-English MSX mailing list.

I founded MSXBR-L in 1995, and after 6 years (and a lot of
problems with mail servers =)), we've got 160 users, and it had been
wonderful. I can say that the MSXBR-L had done much more for the
Brazilian MSX community than I have ever imagined. But less than 20% of
the MSXBR-L subscribers also reads the international MSX mailing list.

Although the MSXBR-L is the oldest and the major Brazilian
mailing list, we've more Brazilian MSX mailing lists, like MSX-All,
MSXSite, MSX-RJ, etc. Many countries (Spain and Japan) have their own
MSX mailing list. Yep, it's so easy nowadays, with Yahoo!Groups...

I think a Dutch MSX mailing list would be very good for the
Dutch MSX community, like the Brazilian and Spanish ones. The
international MSX mailing list (the eldest, founded by Wiebe Weikamp,
Roderik Muit, Stefan Boer and myself in 1994) can be a great way of
talking about MSX overseas, but there are questions that would be
answered better by people from our own country.

The thought of only one mailing list is a very selfish one. Not
everybody speaks English. BTW, very few can speak and write English
correctly. Does anyone have asked why only Kuniji Ikeda, from Japan, is
the lonely guy from the Land Of The Rising Sun who writes English mails?
Why not more Japanese MSX-freaks talk in English here, about MSX?

As I've said above, maybe we have 20 or 30 Brazilian members in
the international MSX mailing list. And it isn't fair to place 130 users
outside the MSX world, only 'cause they can't write and/or read in
English. We lives in the same planet, but we still have our own
countries, speak different languages, and prefer different football
national teams. =)

So, think with care about a Dutch mailing list.

Just my 2 cents...

This is a chicken-or-the-egg discussion we had many times.
Are there no games because of the copying or is there copying because
there are no games? I think at least a little of both.
Brazilian MSX users could have united and contact Japanese software
houses, so they would release software in Brazil.

Nowadays it would be easier, with the Internet. But:
1) We had got a restrictive import law, with said 'no' to all
people who tried to get something related to computers in a foreign
country. It was between 1976 and 1992 (I think so). So, when MSX was in
its best, we could not buy anything from Japan, Europe or even
Paraguay (ops, legally speaking).

2) None of us knew that those games where old as
MegaROM cartdriges.

3) We were too young. I started with MSX when I had 12 years
old. Most of us even knew how we could buy computer thingies from
foreign companies.

4) It was much easier to buy a copy with the local 'reseller'.

5) Konami, Topo Soft, Zigurai, Namco, Sony, Toshiba, Dinamic,
TE Soft, Falcom... None of them were interested in selling MSX games
here in Brazil.

MSXs in Brazil

2001-02-07 Thread Ricardo Jurczyk Pinheiro

Em ter, 06 fev 2001, Ivan Latorre escreveu:

I was wondering if MSX2 computers were sold in Brazil (I mean
that if they were distributed to shops by big companies like Sony,
Sanyo, Philips, ...). Ive read that two companies (Gradiente and
Expert) sold MSX1s. I also was wondering if other companies
 sold MSX1s in Brazil.

Nope.

Sharp and Gradiente sold only MSXs 1 in Brazil. Sharp had sold
HotBit, first the white one, then the black one. The HotBit has
everything in one piece: keyboard, cartdrige slots, etc., like the
Philips NMS-8280 and the Panasonic WSX.

Gradiente, otherwise, had sold Expert, which was very similar to
the National CF-3000 (They badly copied the National's MSX): detached
keyboard, slim desktop case, more "professional feeling". The Experts
where first grey, then the Plus/DD-Plus, which where black.

Unfortunately, all of them where MSX 1. There where rumours
regarding to new companies which wanted to sell MSXs, like Dynacom and
Racimec (they said that its computer will be a MSX 2), but none of them
where developed. It was very difficult to import a foreign MSX, like the
ones developed by Sony, Philips, Sanyo, etc., 'cause of a very bad,
restrictive law: "Lei de Informatica". I have cursed it many times... =)

As I have been told, Gradiente wanted to sell MSXs 2 in Brazil
in 1990 (a bit late, isn't it?), but they stopped. They claimed that the
production was stopped due to lack of money.

So... Despite the CIEL's MSX 2+ boards, there weren't sold MSXs
2, 2+ or Turbo-R in Brazil.

I can write portable code implementing the format

much more difficult to implement than .msx, and we don't care
about the complexity because there are free implementations.

My only hope is that these ideas can be ported to real MSX, too.

I'll have to think about that. Is seems a bit too centralized for my taste,

Having the game database centralized has another advantage: we
could build a kind of MSX-Napster. The central database would not store
any actual .msx file, but it could store URLs from sites where the
packages could be download. Another advantage of this napster-like
database is the updating of the .msx archives. If there's a new version
available (the date ID can be used for this purpose), the msx-napster can
warn the user or start the new download.

Hm. We should think a "MSX-Napster-like" client 4 Uzix too... =)
But how about the lists? There are some servers where the
(dynamic) list from Napster is stored. Where does will we place such
list?

Alternatives:
1) MSX Resource Center, MSXNet (Sean Young), AAMSX,
www.msx2.com... All servers which belongs to MSX-freaks could have a
mirror of the updated list.
2) What about something like Freenet, which doesn't have central
servers?

Only some bucks of contribution...

attachments. But maybe it's possible to install some kind of external filter
that discards attachments. Is there anyone here who knows whether such a
filter already exists or how it can be created?

The Brazilian MSX mailing list runs over Mailman for a year or
two. It's a amazing mailing list manager. It has a lot of features
(even newsgroup - mailing list transfer), and it's full
Web-configurable. We're using Mailman 2.0.

And Mailman can limit the maximum mail length to a little amount
of kbytes. The MSXBR-L has a 16 Kb limit, so it can be used to avoid
bigger attachments. I've got 2 or 3 copies of this virus in our list,
but all of them Mailman had kept, in order to be analysed by myself.

Mailman is great, sounds nice to know that MSX mailing list
is migrating to a better, free and GPLed solution. =)

Hmmm, mostly used by ROM-hungry fudebas, or MSX-freaks, like us?
Nothing against emulators, but I'd rather prefer talking about the real
machine, not an emulation.

Well, when I had a little spare time, I would read comp.sys.msx
and another newsgroups. But it was in the beginning, when men where men,
Internet Explorer was in its first (and mostly buggy) version, Windows
95 was promissed to be launched... =) 1995, to be precise. Since that
year, I haven't got a direct Internet access (only dial-up), and I could
not read comp.sys.msx anymore.

 And I would gladly see a comp.binaries.msx... I think file-requests
shouldn't be posted on the Mailinglist or on comp.sys.msx but on that one
 instead.

Hmmm, is there so many file-requests here, in the MSX mailing

Nice!

1 - Taken during the lecture of Mr. Nishi. You can see the booth of Matra,
where STAR is listening carefully, although he cannot understand any word of
it! ;-) Behind him is Mr. Ikeda.

Maybe he can "feel the words"...

7 - Utter left: ag0ny and SaveR. Posing are Mr. Ikeda and Alex Mitsio Sato

=)

9 - Those guys were selling G-NET magazines and some books and some cd

Pity, all in Japanese.

10 - This cool guy is making an MSX version of that game ONE (or ONLY ONE).
Nice to see he has ZIP, CD ROM and HARDDISK on his MEGA SCSI ;-) Left of
the monitor is playing the PlayStation version of ONE

Well, I've got HD, CD-ROM and Zip-Drive into my MSX T-R with
Mega-SCSI... Not so great, I wanna see people connecting a SCSI scanner,
and using it! =P but surely, Mega-SCSI is great.

11 - Stuff from Syntax. There are now 100 NV magazines. You could buy a
collection of them in a special package (left) and also issue 100 (right,
 blue packages)

Wow, amazing! How does can we buy it...

12 - The guy from Syntax (sorry, forgot his name) who was also selling some
games that were ripped from Gameboy (not emulation), with the main idea:
GAME OVER COLOR. He sold them in those nice packages you see on the left.
The screen on the right was connected to his TurboR

GameBoy ROMs?

15 - The girls from the MATRA booth. The girl on the right is SaveR's
girlfriend, if I am not mistaken

Well, nice, girls aren't common in MSX meetings, almost here
in Brazil, they're very rare.

17 - The booth of Gigamix. Showing Magical Labyrinth and a
demo of DM System 2. Cool: the manual of DM SYSTEM 2 is exactly in the
style of the ASCII MSX Technical Databooks (they had the Turbo R and
MSX2 version to compare with). Both Gigamix and ASCII used LaTeX for
making those books. Cool! Also some nice hardware there.

Amazing! LaTeX! Cool! But does DM-System 2 are translated to a
western language... Like English?

 21 - This is a mistake, I accidently pushed the photocamera's button!
;-)

Fudeba!

26 - Booth of ESE Artist's Factory. On the left Nemesis 2 on a Turbo
R, on the right it is running on their VHDL one-chip MSX1. Quite
impressive and I think the most important thing on this fair... I toke
one of those flyers:

Well, nice. Where we can get info about there VHDLs?

34 - The drawing guy again, now in action! He is quite good, but
no-one understand his drawings... ;-)

Maybe an non-understandable painter...

35 - The Disk Writer thingie. Software distribution! Nice system. Nice
Maxell ZIP! ;-)

Wow!

42 - The new MATRA game

Name... ?

44 - The nice buttons (or is the correct English word 'pins'?)

Dammit, I wanna some pins too...

48 - An official Panasonic G1 RGB21 monitor... But out of focus! Waah!
(It was at that drawing guy's booth) 49 - Same monitor - this is that
diskmagazine again

Aaaah... Maybe Santa Claus can gimme one if I'd be a good boy...

 55 - Casio MX-101 in box

Hmmm, maybe the smallest MSX in the world, isn't it?

73 - Hi there Mr. Suzukawa... (get undressed in
public then I guess it is okay to take your pic! ;-)

?

Thankx, Manuel!

You have read what we posted here some weeks ago, didn´t you?

Re: Brazilian MSX Maling list (In Portuguese)

2000-07-19 Thread Ricardo Jurczyk Pinheiro

It all comes down to "standards". English, like it or
not, is a standard. Many people know it and everybody
should know it aswell.

It doesn't seem very smart to keep yourself away
from developments and discussions taken in your
very own country. However, you can be smart and
do stupid things, and vice versa. `:))) MSXBR-L
is the best way to know what people are doing in
Brazil, and if you have some questions related
to Brazilian MSX software or hardware it's also
the quickest way to get answers.

Doesn't seem very smart for whose opinion? Is that a
standard? I try to keep up-to-date with anything I
consider interesting, that's not a geographical issue
here.

Maybe. The problem about brazilian MSX computers and
their developers is that they tried to get away from
the MSX standards. The Expert has it's character table
altered, while the HotBit has serious hardware
problems. "Sorry, you won't be able to run this
software on your HotBit / Expert". Everybody knows how
standards are important. Fortunatelly with emulators,
you can run a virtual MSX with the original Microsoft
MSX ROM.

Why not you try to talk this into the MSXBR-L, in plain Portuguese (mainly
´cause our English isn´t that nice, mainly compared with our mother
tongue)... Better, why not in Jau´s meeting, of MSXRio´2001? =)

some tests... But what was my surprise when I could not put it working with
my Philips RGB monitor. I´ve got the same problem as Daniel: an out-of-sync
image. And I was wondering about buying one 4 me, but I wasn´t satisfied
with the results, and forgot it.

Thankx...

(Hm, since MSX is already proclaimed dead for several years, too,
MSX and Esperanto would probably make a perfect couple ;-D))

Why the hell are you still in this list if you think that MSX is dead?

RE: What MSX really means

2000-07-04 Thread Ricardo Jurczyk Pinheiro

Indeed a good idea.

The problem was - i think - they expected a Japanese kind of fair
(every group giving a short speech and demonstration)

Maybe it's a good idea for the next fair to make a presentation room with a
beamer and some chairs where groups can give presentations about their
newest projects or maybe even seminars.

Well, we´ve got this moment here in Brazil, in our meetings (Rio, Jau,
Brasilia). And I think, Spanish users does it in their meetings too.

Re: Game

2000-06-25 Thread Ricardo Jurczyk Pinheiro

I can't make a dsk copy of Back to the Future for MSX2
The game runs perfect when using Ru-MSX (accessing directly the disk, no
image copys), and I can make a perfect (working) copy using copyQM, but
there's no emulator that recognises this format (which I dont even know
what is)

I try to make a direct copy (copy a:*.*) but that didn't work either... So,
I used Dcopy to make a dsk file, but no success! This is driving me
crazy!!

I even tryed to using brmsx and some disk copy program to make a copy from
the real disk (in drive A) to a fake disk (drive b an empyt image file)...
but couldn't make any good copier to work in it! (Chave
mestra/diskcopy/fastcopy)

Someone pleeaaase help me!

Me manda uma copia em DSK q eu quero rodar no meu MSX real mesmo... =)

Re: Out to #FC-#FF

2000-06-24 Thread Ricardo Jurczyk Pinheiro

] Is there some page which could tell me how all the MSX version react on
] an in a,(#FF). I know it shouldn't be done but I'm trying to change a
] program...
]
] In MSX turbo R and some MSX2+ machines, the upper 3 bits will always be 1.
]
] The value read will be the selected segment in the largest mapper in the

Unfortunately this is not the case on the MSX turbo R when you insert an
external mapper with a size larger then 512kB. The MSX turbo R has
low-impedance pull-up registers for the 3-upper bits. They pull the line up
stronger then the average external mapper can pull the line down. Hence, the
3-upper bits will always be 1. Even if the external mapper tries to pull one
of those bits down to 0.

Asking in a low-profile manner... I can use something like ADDRAM (4 Mb
Mapper) into my T-R? What problems I can have, regarding to the use of an
external mapper?

Thankx, ByE!

Re: games

DOESN"T ANYONE OUT HERE HAVE A SUNRISE RS232 AND FINALLY WANTS TO SEE SOME
COLORS WITH IT WITHOUT HAVING TO OWN A GFX9000???

  Colors? RS-232c? Can´t understand...

The terminal program Erix that comes with the Sunrise RS232 has two
versions: one for V9938 and one for GFX9000. The GFX9000 version can
display ANSI colors, the V9938 version can't.

Ah, yes, nice... But I think my RS-232 isn´t very good, it hangs my MSX
when I try run the fossil-driver...
