Stepping out of the house on Thursday, I saw a splash of white across my left eye. Thinking it was bird poop, I wiped the eye but there was nothing there. Then I noticed the huge (60-70% of my vision) field of floaters that had appeared. Clearly a cause for concern. Off to the local eye infirmary (a leftover from the local industrial past) for a checkup, where the above was diagnosed. A very common occurence, apparently, and completely harmless in itself. Complications such as those mentioned in the wiki article are very rare - I was the third person that day to turn up with the problem and the opthamologist had seen no complications this year. She highlighted that it was only really necessary to come back if an occurence caused a dark patch in my vision that I could not see through or my vision as a whole rapidly deteriorated. She also said that complications generally occur at the time, not later, unlike the wiki article. So there you go. Did you update the wiki article with the corrections? More RAM? I think that could make a noticeable difference. 16G vs 24G vs 32G? I have no idea other than that more could be better but also possibly overkill. You might be right. I haven't used the Adobe products in some time, but working with 4k x 3k scans of 35mm frames, back when I did use them, Photoshop would eat swap space like a dog in an Alpo bag if I did much at all with the image. Actually, I'll change my mind a bit, and suggest getting one with some SSD for swap (desktop) or for main storage (laptop) rather than the extra 16GB of memory. I haven't researched the mSATA drive stuff that's available. Can someone explain what that means? Can't help there. I've used SATA and eSATA but not mSATA. My gut tells me that in addition to CPU, RAM and SSD drives are the items that will enhance performance as far as speed is concerned. The slowest component in a system will drag down all other others. Completely agree, I'm just suggesting that RAM and SSD (I/O speed) will have a bigger impact than the difference between a Core i5, Core i7, or AMD Bulldozer CPU. -- Doug Lefty Franklin NutDriver Racing http://NutDriver.org Facebook NutDriver Racing Sponsored by Murphy -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

I know no one can say with certainty, but how has it affected other digital cameras? I'd like to have more resolution, but I'm concerned that the cross--hatch pattern on automobile grilles might cause moire. A few months ago Luminous Landscape did some comparisons between the two versions of the D800. Initial tests showed the superiority of the D800E (without AA filter) but several people pointed out that standard capture sharpening would reduce the difference significantly. He posted more samples, this time with capture sharpening applied to both cameras and the difference between the two was *drastically* reduced. Reichmann insisted that the difference would be apparent in print but I really think he's kidding himself here. Differences in print are always *less* than pixel-peeped 100% views and after seeing his tests I wouldn't pay extra for a camera without an anti-aliasing filter. Thanks Mark. Good to know. The Luminous landscape page is here: http://www.luminous-landscape.com/reviews/cameras/nikon_d800_d800e_first_comparison.shtml Scroll all the way to the bottom to see the final sharpened comparison. The top image (D800E without AA filter) looks a hair sharper -- but nowhere near enough (in my opinion) to show up in a print. I also notice he rendered the non-AA image with a little more contrast than the one from the camera with the AA filter; extra contrast always gives a subjective impression of additional sharpness. I brought them both into Photoshop and equalized the black and white levels of both images; they were virtually indistinguishable at that point. Mind you, I think Reichmann's right about moire being an over-emphasized bogeyman. You might see it in fine weave like cloth but probably only rarely then. I can't see car grilles ever being a problem. At equal pricing I wouldn't hesitate to buy a camera without an anti-aliasing filter. Re: Setting the Q's Quick Dial
Sorry for the delay in answering Mark C's question on how to do true HDR on the Q. I was not familiar enough with the Q yet to answer off the top of my head. Also, hard to wrap one's head around is how some features are not available when other settings are enabled. To do true HDR, with a minimum of fuss you first of all need to be shooting RAW or RAW+. Then, the feature you are looking for is Exposure Bracketing. In the menu, you can select the bracketing order (see page 68 of the manual). Exposure bracketing is not available when the capture mode is set to Moving Object, Night Scene HDR, Pet, Kids, HDR (of the SCN mode on the dial). It is also not available when the shutter speed is set to B. It is also not available when HDR Capture is set (since that applies only to the camera's automatically merging 3 shots into a JPEG) Finally, it cannot be used with Interval Shooting or Multi-Exposure. You'll see you have your choice of normal Exposure Bracketing or Exposure Bracketing in combination with the Remote Control. After you have selected which one you want, you can press the DOWNARROW again to select the EV separation between shots (using the dial). You can set up to a +/- 3 EV for your over/under-exposed shots. To cancel the Exposure Bracketing, you just switch back to another drive mode. The only other thing to keep in mind is that whatever AF point is selected in the first exposure will be used in the 2nd and third. Re: OT: High Performance Laptops
I recently replaced my older laptop to get something with better performance. It's a core i7 running the 64 bit version of Windows 7. The key feature is 16Gb of memory. Using the Nik HDR software, Photomatix or Photoshop a 9 image HDR uses about 11Gbytes of memory and processes in 5 to 10 minutes. These are 36 Megapixel images so they are big. There is very little or no disk activity during processing so I doubt that SSD would make much difference. I have similar results when stitching panoramas. 16Gig of memory seems more than adequate, but I don't think I would want less. When I process lower resolution HDRs or Panos it takes me longer to select the files than it takes to do the processing. The CPU is i7-3830QM running at 2.7GHz. During the above operations, all 8 cores of the CPU are busy doing something but none of them go higher than 30-50% capacity. So I don't think CPU is that big of a factor. It's important, but I wouldn't stress the budget to get the fastest one available. For me, storage capacity isn't that important. I want enough to comfortably hold my software, but I keep all of my data on external drives and don't seem to have performance issues. An SSD would be nice on boot-up, but really that's about the only time I might really care. All of the programs I use start up in 3-5 seconds. Even a reboot only takes about 1-3 minutes, and I only reboot once a week. Any other time I just put the computer in the sleep mode and get instant restarts. It's an HP with a 17 screen that I bought on the HP website without doing a lot of shopping around. I don't remember the exact cost but it was around $2k with the shipping. I think you can sweat a lot about details, but the biggest performance enabler is the 16 Gig of memory. I don't know if this helps you make a decision, but that's what is working very well for me processing those relatively huge files. gs George Sinos gsi...@gmail.com www.georgesphotos.net plus.georgesinos.com On Tue, Sep 11, 2012 at 7:31 AM, Doug Franklin do...@nutdriver.org wrote: On 2012-09-11 1:25, Tom C wrote: I'd like an i7 CPU. I doubt you'd notice any difference in daily operations for photo management and editing. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Thanks, Bruce. I'd love to read that book by Bob as well! G Your comments are appreciated and helpful. I couldn't pull back physically, as all the cars are parked along the street parallel to the sidewalk. In this case, there were only a few feet between the bumper of this car and the bumper of the one in front of it. I shot it wide -- about 24 mm -- and going wider, to 18 mm or so, would have distorted ti too much and brought a lamp post into the frame. What bothers me most is the dude in sun glasses visible through the windshield. I wish I has seen that before taking the image. I've never been one for car photography - Paul Stenquist's your man for that. The only car I've ever tried to photograph was my MGB Roadster, which I photographed from a distance on a coast road. The pictures weren't very good. In the case of this car, you have to take what you can get where you find it, and Dan's done a good job in the circumstances. In ideal circumstances you'd take it out into the countryside somewhere and photograph it in action. Thanks for your comments, Bob. Actually, I thought I did a pretty good job of hiding my reflection. I was so busy doing that, however, that I didn't notice the man with the sunglasses visible through the windshield! Also, as I said upstream, I was trying to depict the car while at the same time showing a bit of the event in which it was displayed, by including some of the spectators on the sidewalk and the car passing by. In retrospect, I should have picked one of the other, and modified the image accordingly. Re: M42 to K-mount adapter question
The M42 to K-Mount adapter was designed as part of the transition from M42 to K-mount in the 1970s to allow owners buy a new Pentax body and make use of their existing complement of M42 lenses. It is designed to mount into the K-mount body and lock there in order to facilitate changing M42 lenses. - You fit it onto the lens and bayonet the assembly into place to fit the adapter. - When you remove the lens from the camera, the mount adapter stays in place to allow you to use other M42 lenses. - You release the adapter by slipping a thin screwdriver blade or feeler gauge into a slot on the adapter to release the catch and then pull it out of the K-beyonet coupling. It works perfectly for its intended purpose. I would never go with cheap alternatives on any lens mounting component. Good quality alternatives are always useful. :-) Some of the third party alternatives are good quality: they were designed to be fitted to the lens and to change with the lens. A key difference between the good ones and the poor ones, aside from material and finish quality, is that most of the good ones include include a ridge to press in the auto-diaphragm pin on M42 lenses and stop down the aperture. This is not important for Pentax M42 lenses ... all of them have an auto-manual diaphragm operation switch on the lens ... but becomes important for various third party lenses which lacked the A-M switch. If you don't have an A-M switch on the lens and you don't have the adapter with the ridge in it, the lens will always be at wide open aperture. I had a couple of the originals and had one fitted to each lens I was going to use, with a thread-locking fluid (temporary, not permanent) on the threads to keep it there. I'd removed the locking catch for the body so that each lens simply mounted and unmounted like a K-bayonet lens. -- Godfrey godfreydigiorgi.posterous.com On Tue, Sep 11, 2012 at 10:50 AM, Steve Cottrell co...@seeingeye.tv wrote: Hi team, Had a question from a mate - I don't know the answer but I told him I knew a group of people who might ;-) -- in your Pentax days, did you ever use an M42 to K-mount adapter? ...and if you did, did you have any problems with the adapter sticking on the body or with infinity focus? In his shoes, I'd get less CPU, more RAM, and faster storage. Photos have a huge impact on storage, especially if you're using Adobe programs (assuming they're still doing the 'we know better than the OS how to manage memory' thing). Even though I've worked in IT for 32 years, I'll be the first to admit that I don't know it all. Each (I) tend to work in niches of IT and therefore many areas are outside our (my) realm of specific expertise. Technology is moving at such a pace, that what one knew 3 years ago doesn't hold sway today. I work in business applications software development. Therefore hardware is generally outside my area, though I understand terminology and concepts. I'd like an i7 CPU. I can't tell the difference between the various versions of it. Yeah I see the minor differences in speed and cache, but in real noticeable terms what does that mean? Is it worth $200 or $500 for a different version? I suspect not. More RAM? I think that could make a noticeable difference. 16G vs 24G vs 32G? I have no idea other than that more could be better but also possibly overkill. I haven't researched the mSATA drive stuff that's available. Can someone explain what that means? My gut tells me that in addition to CPU, RAM and SSD drives are the items that will enhance performance as far as speed is concerned. The slowest component in a system will drag down all other others. One of the workshops I attended as part of the annual convention for Professional Photographers of NC was a short class on specifying a computer optimized for Photoshop. I'll try to summarize succinctly. Intel i7 - offered in several tiers. The second tier is good enough for PhotoShop and has a really big price discount off the top tier CPU. Probably moot for laptops. You're going to get whatever the manufacturer chooses. If the manufacturer offers several different CPUs, choose the one with the biggest L1 cache. Hard-drives - 3 of them; boot, scratch storage. A laptop won't do this, but there are a bunch that have the option for two hard-drives. The key is to try to put PhotoShop's scratch disk on a different drive from Windows virtual memory. Hard-drives are the easiest thing to upgrade later, even on a laptop. RAM - RAM is cheap (relatively) it's easier to just max it out. Whatever the maximum the motherboard will accept is how much you need, because if you buy the RAM when you buy the motherboard, there's no worry later if you'll be able to find the right RAM to upgrade. If you have enough RAM, PhotoShop will never use the scratch-disk. Video - should have 1Gig of ram itself support Open-GL. The key point here is RAM. Max it out from the very start, because that's going to be the most difficult (most expensive) to upgrade later. You can frequently get a big discount on RAM from the manufacturer if you upgrade to max RAM when you order your laptop. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
Re: M42 to K-mount adapter question
The Pentax adapter works better than any other, the only caveats really are that you need a lens with an auto/manual switch, and when removing the lens from the camera the adapter stays with the camera. To remove it the locking spring visible through one of the cutouts must be released. A strong fingernail is good enough but a small thin blade, (knife or screwdriver), works as well. Now some non Pentax m42 lenses have external indexing systems for wide open metering that can interfere with proper mounting and operation on a K mount camera, (Mamyia Sekor TL/DTL are a system I know has this problem), Fujifilm m42 lenses use a similar system, I don't know if there's a problem with them as well. M42 to K-mount adapter question
I started using M42 to Pk adapters almost since the Pk release, have used the original version (more than one copy) in KM, K2, Ricoh XR10, Lx, Mz5, PZ70, Pz1p and Mx, and never had infinity issues unless the camera was off the spec somehow. Yes, that happened with the K2, and later with the Lx. The original adapter by Pentax was designed to remain in the camera until a spring was pushed and the adapter released. I almost at once fitted the adapter to the lens, removing the spring. Never had one of my adapters stuck into the camera, have one that is shallower than the others - if I screw it to the end on the lens, the combo will not fit into the camera - any camera - so I have it spaced from the lens flange. Works fine this way. Here in BR some home-made adapters appeared lately, but they won't focus to infinity - they place the lens farther from the camera. I'd stick to original if possible, even spending some $15 extra. At least one lens - russian made 55mm, can't remember exact model, had to be adjusted - the lens had a small, almost cubic appendix that would get too deep into the camera (Mx) so I removed it. And also made the aperture blades closed by default, since the Mx wouldn't push the auto-aperture pin. High Dollar perhaps? I think they should have kept SMC and added HD to it. Your old lenses had SMC coating and your new lenses have SMC-HD coating. Build the brand on what everybody already knows is one of its strengths, instead of starting all over. I get the feeling that's what the K5 II represents. It's an interim place holder because Ricoh has Pentax starting all over again. I really think Pentax has gotten behind because of the sale to Hoya and the sale again to Ricoh. And they're still flailing around trying to figure out what people will want to buy. Meanwhile Nikon, Canon, Sony, Panasonic et al have new product out there, and they're eating Pentax's lunch. I understand there's not enough of us here at PDML to buy the numbers of cameras lenses Pentax needs to sell in order to remain viable, so that Pentax has to attract new users. But it seems Pentax is trying to attract those new buyers by me toing Nikon, Canon, Sony, Panasonic ... and I just don't think that's going to work. I don't think Pentax has a future if they're always going to be a day late a dollar short in the market. One of Pentax's biggest selling points was VALUE - you always got more for your money. Pentax might be six months behind whatever the latest gimmick was, but when the product hit the street, it would do it better and cost you less. I don't see that happening now. From: J.C. M42 to K-mount adapter question
From: Steve Cottrell Hi team, Had a question from a mate - I don't know the answer but I told him I knew a group of people who might ;-) -- in your Pentax days, did you ever use an M42 to K-mount adapter? ...and if you did, did you have any problems with the adapter sticking on the body or with infinity focus? I've trawled the Pentax forums, most recommend the genuine Pentax adapter which is expensive and hard to find - But, the genuine Pentax adapter itself is by all accounts, not perfect... Wondering whether to chance it with a cheapo alternative. --- Any experience with this? I have the Pentax screw-mount adapter. Haven't used it in a while because I no longer need to use the one screw mount lens I have (Vivitar 20mm f/3.5). I never noticed any problems with infinity focus, but the adapter is a PITA to get back out. It's not really stuck. There's a little tab you have to release it's kind of hard to manipulate. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Re: PESO: Classic 29 Ford (Cropped)
Yeah, I quite like that, Dan. My issue with the original wasn't that it showed the crowd and the guy in the windshield. It was that for it to work as a document of the car meet, it needed to show *more* crowd, passers-by, activity, surrounding storefronts, etc. The car needed to be a smaller element of that scene. As it was, it suggested the car alone was the subject, but with distractions around it. It's a balance thing. Like two equal subjects fighting for dominance. Re: Pentax announcements official
I don't think Pentax is flailing around trying to figure out what people want to buy. I think they know. They just couldn't get it done in time with the constraints they're working under. First people want to buy full frame K-3, some will settle for a full frame K-03. If they can't have that a K-5n (notice not the II) with the Sony 24 mp sensor, would have caused grumbling but I bet 90% of the PDML would have one within the next 6 months. I expect 99% of the Pentax forums members would have had one within a year complaining bitterly all the while. I think Pentax would also be able to sell a fare number of K-02 cameras assuming it was a K-01 with a built in EVF. There are a few problems however, for the K-3 and K-03 there would be only 7 current lenses that are guaranteed to to cover the whole frame. Those designated DA would probably automatically crop to APS-C. The 24mp sensor won't have the stellar noise control of the 16mp sensor in current use. It will probably be better than Sony's implementation, by a little, which is already good, but not as good as the 16mp. Right now the 16mp sensor in the K-5 is still the reigning champion for APS-C quality at DxOMark, two years after it's introduction. Maybe Pentax didn't see any way to keep that record short of going full frame, and doesn't want to go full frame unless they can announce a raft of new lenses at the same time. Then again maybe there will be a surprise announcement of a FF K-3 before the end of Photokina, but that does seem pretty unlikely. On 9/11/2012 2:43 PM, John Sessoms wrote: High Dollar perhaps? Regards, JvW Which do you think would serve Pentax better in the marketplace SMC-HD or HD-SMC? SMC-HD. It keeps the SMC label prominent and adds the acronym that modern consumers know means high definition. HD on its own is almost meaningless due to the term's hypersaturation in tech marketing culture, but adding it after Pentax's long-lived SMC label indicates to new users that it's good quality and to old users that it's an update of a well-known technology. Switching to HD on its own is a really bad idea, in my opinion. Well, since we appear to have a consensus here, I believe that's settled. Over to Pentax Ricoh now ... I think they've already engraved the lens identification in quantity, so HD it will remain. -- Don't lose heart, they might want to cut it out, and they'll want to avoid a lengthly search. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
