PESOs a woody for Frank, and a couple others from the Folsom Street Fair
The Folsom Street Fair is a San Francisco Leather Pride celebration. On one hand it is an incredibly rich opportunity to photograph certain elements of society enjoying life with an exuberance which is hard to believe. On the other hand, sometimes seeing this exuberance makes you want to scrub your brain with steel wool and bleach. I've got a set of photos from today that would probably all be OK in most reasonably liberal workplaces. I did get one photo of someone's woody, that I think Frank might appreciate: http://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/8018818394/ I think that this photo captures the exuberance, without showing anything too outrageously risque: http://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/8018815163/ It was nearly as much fun checking out the camera gear in use at the fair. Of course there was the usual assortment of canikon SLRs. I also saw a K-7 and two full frame Pentax SLRs. One was an ME, I didn't catch what the other was. I also saw an 8x10 view camera, a 6x7 rangefinder or two, several MF film cameras, and a Nikon F set up to shoot from ground level. I was amused to note this ginger, with a DSLR around her neck, photographing some of the local color with her cell phone: http://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/8018824050/ While none of these photos are actually lewd, I advise caution as to who might be looking over your shoulder if and when you open the links. Atget, whispering trees, and spending Sunday on the street
Someone mentioned the Eugune Atget exhibit happening in Sydney at the moment. Managed some time to see it yesterday, and it bears taking the time. All are 8x10 contact contact prints, and beautifully toned. Highly recommended. http://www.artgallery.nsw.gov.au/exhibitions/eugene-atget/ Art and About is an annual art festival, with the pieces taking place on the street (Sydney Life is part of it). Re: Sydney Life
Nice! Sign printing folks do an awesome job these days. I've had some photos printed at 3x3 feet by a sign printer onto a vinyl coated fabric and they looked very good. If you pixel-peeped you could see the random ink dithering, but it served to cover up the fact they were taken with my 6 megapixel K100D Super, and these large prints are meant to be viewed from 5 feet or more anyways. Re: PESO - Sometimes I get the blues
Thank you, Derby. Your street shots helped inspire me to move in more. Here're the deets on the guitar: Frank, it's a Del Vecchio from Brazil: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Del_Vecchio_(guitar_maker) Most likely one of the Dinâmico guitars. John told me it's an antique. It's certainly really well used; half of the soundhole grills are missing or caved in. They used gorgeous Brazilian wood in the top plate. Apparently rare outside Brazil, but semi-famous because Chet Atkins played one. The construction is dubious and they're often out of tune, but this one sounded wonderful, I thought. OT - Shoulder injury update
Got a call from the hospital yesterday. Upon reviewing x-rays they now see a fracture and I should reattend Monday morning. Which I did. Fracture of the clavical right near the tip. It's like a small chip got shaved off. Good news: should heal well. Six weeks in a sling and I should be good to ride a bike. So I am doing my job walking and on transit. More good news: This time I have a driver with insurance. Due to Ontario's no fault system it may be hard to get pain and suffering out of him but at least out-of-pockets will be covered. Until the camera stopped shooting. I would press the shutter, and I'd get a flicker of light (focus assist or pop up flash signalling the 540? not sure..), but the shutter wouldn't fire. Several times I would re-focus and try again, but nothing. I tried the following: - turning the whole thing off on again - turning off the focus assist light - setting the AF to release priority, instead of focus priority - using manual focus - turning off flash, shooting manual exposure mode - shooting in Av, Tv, Tav, P and AUTO None of these got the shutter to fire. We packed it in for the day, and when I got home, 20 minutes later, I tried the camera again. Worked fine, in Av, M, Tav, etc... though I didn't try it with the wireless flash again... Mind you, this whole shutter mechanism was recently replaced (6 months ago) at CRIS. So, I'm thinking I must be doing something wrong, or at least missing something. What do you make of this? Any thoughts? Lastly, just for fun -- a peso. My son, Nick, from tonight. On one hand it is an incredibly rich opportunity to photograph certain elements of society enjoying life with an exuberance which is hard to believe. On the other hand, sometimes seeing this exuberance makes you want to scrub your brain with steel wool and bleach. Re: K5 acting up?... plus a PESO
I love the shot. Can't help specifically with the system glitch, but I wonder if there's any chance the flash was the problem. The camera might be waiting for signals from the P-TTL logic. Sometimes it helps the wireless stuff if you add a reflector of some sort (eg tinfoil) to the popup head to get more light over at the remote 540. I have even had success holding my hand at an angle near the popup. Honestly, I've just switched to using cheap radio triggers for remote flash. All my random flash failures went away. Re: Pentax K7
The K-7 is in almost all respects identical to the K-5 except for the sensor. The K-7 and K20D share the same sensor family with similar IQ. There is nothing wrong with the K20D, but it doesn't have the high ISO performance of the K-5, neither does for all it's improvements the K-7. Changing lenses is much more inconvenient. And since the DA* zoom, which was engineered for the APS-C image circle, delivers results that are, in my experience, somewhat better than the prime, which was not engineered for the task at hand, it makes much more sense to use that lens. I also find that the lenses I use for work are the same once I pick up for play. I'm accustomed to them, so they feel right. I've also noticed that the FA 35/2 has required quite a bit of focus correction with my last few Pentax cameras. I've considered the Paul C Buff triggers... but maybe ebay triggers are just fine...? I've got some of the cheap chinese radio triggers, about $10 for each transmitter or receiver. And they work OK, as long as the transmitter and receiver are within a few feet of each other and there is nothing (like a strobe body) between them. I get a fair number of missed triggers with them anyways, but for studio work it's not like you're blowing a dollar's worth of film/processing. Note: do not use fancy rechargeable batteries in the receivers, they run at a lower voltage than regular AAA batteries, and don't have nearly the sensitivity. Paul C Buff makes some great gear, and for reasonable prices for what you get. I recently acquired some old, simple pocket wizards. All they do is trigger, no control over flash intensity or anything. They seem to work a lot better than the cheap chinese ones. In short, for $20 or so, the cheap ones will more or less do the job most of the time, but you'll learn to love radio triggers and will eventually want to upgrade. If you don't mind spending $20 (or a bit more if you get spares, a trigger for your second body etc.) on something that you'll eventually just set aside as a spare, and don't mind the occasional (1 in 8 or 10) shot where the flash doesn't fire, they are a great deal. Film did not have this issue, hence FA glass (and before) doesn't do this so the image will be fuzzier, especially off center. From: Joseph McAllister There is a very nice shot of the shuttle taken from directly above floating around on the 'net. It's not new, 2010, but is unusual. As an old photo reconn guy, I would guess it was shot from a photo-jet version of one of the birds so equipped we've used in the past 30 years. http://www.universetoday.com/62092/space-shuttle-endeavor/ NASA has quite a fleet of photo-recon equipped aircraft, mostly devoted to earth resources research, but occasionally experimental stuff that's eventually going to end up somewhere in the DoD. RE: a legendary FA 35 f/2 AL...
The theoretical advantage DA lenses have over FA lenses when used on APS-C format is not so much they are designed for a sensor is that they are designed for APS-C not 24x36mm format and hence dont need to cover as large an image circle. This means they can use simpler more efficient optical designs which improve both resolution and even contrast across the APS-C frame if the design is radical in the case of the FA lens. - J.C.O'Connell hifis...@gate.net - -Original Message- From: pdml-boun...@pdml.net [mailto:pdml-boun...@pdml.net] On Behalf Of Paul Stenquist Sent: Monday, September 24, 2012 2:59 PM To: Pentax-Discuss Mail List Subject: Re: a legendary FA 35 f/2 AL... I considered suggesting the same thing, but - turning off flash, shooting manual exposure mode ... If it was a problem with P-TTL shouldn't the shutter have triggered in manual exposure with no flash? Unless maybe the camera software just got scrambled didn't clear right away. Christine, Did you take the battery (or batteries if you use the grip) out during troubleshooting or at home before testing the camera again? From: Bruce Walker I love the shot. My understanding is that all DA glass has been created with this astigmatism compensation specifically with sensors in mind. Yes, that is true Bruce but we must remember there are traditional sensors and then there are the Sony Exmor sensors used in the K-x and the K-5 (and presumably other models). Take a look at the fundamental design change that the Exmor brought to the table, especially as it affects off-axis light sensitivity: http://www.antiqueauto.org/assets/ExmorSensorAdvantage.png Instead of the light entering the microlens and travelling down a virtual pipe before it gets to the photo diode, the microlens sits directly ON the photodiode. What gets talked about all of the time is how many more photons this captures (and so better performance in the same low light when compared to other sensors) but what I don't see get directly talked about is the obvious off-axis light performance. Many Pentax lenses were designed as you say (and would thus work well on either the old style or Exmor sensors. But I believe that the performance of lenses made for film cameras (and the F and FA lenses) would be significantly better on the Exmor sensored cameras than they were on pre-Exmor sensored cameras. Thank you for the compliment. What I have never been able to understand is how teasing and making a joke in the middle of a discussion seems to be always appropriate to some people. When I'm discussing camera technique or technology, I don't break into a showboat jazz routine for comic relief: You don't have to understand why people do it, you just have to remember that people do it. You do seem to occasionally react to friendly ribbing as a direct insult, and once in a while your discussions seem to devolve into a heated flame war rather than light hearted banter. But the point of the events is not for me to take photos, the point is for people to have fun dancing. It is my job to get the best pictures possible without interfering with the event. Then you simply have to deal with the situation as it presents itself using the equipment you have. These photos were all shot between 1am and 5am at the latenight dances. I believe that the set should be publicly viewable, and not need a facebook account. I do intend to sort the set down further before posting them on flickr, choosing the ones that are the best photographically, rather than just the shots that the dancers want, i.e. something clear enough of themselves having a good time. Despite the technical limitations, I wouldn't call them crappy blurry, underexposed photographs that look terrible. https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10151265920339673.513291.653299672type=3l=15819e7dcf They look fine to me too, although perhaps a little too fine. They are too literal for my taste in portraying such an event. They look too much like dance pictures on a floor might look under normal lighting. If the situation is dark, the photos should also be dark to portray it accurately. This is an ongoing aesthetic choice. It depends on whether the goal is to show pictures of people dancing in a dimly lit room, or to show a picture of Meagan and Josh having an enjoyable dance. Do note that it is almost always possible to darken a photo in post processing, with little loss of quality, and possibly even reducing the noise (similar to how Dolby NR on tape works), while it is rarely possible to brighten an underexposed photo without loss of quality. I wasn't whining. You said something about never finding max ISO to be useful. I said that I do find it useful because I am often photographing in situations where I lose less image quality by pushing harder on the ISO, than I would by slowing the shutter speed down, or shooting several stops underexposed. Gosh. OF COURSE I'll use maximum ISO *WHEN NEEDED* to get a photo, whether I normally find it 'useful' or not. You vacillate from interpreting what I write in the most literal possible way to interpreting minus one as plus one and joking about, you know? It's hard to have a discussion that way. OK, you are right. Looking back through the archives I can see how you might have been joking about change the light. I've had enough people make that same statement, not understanding why it isn't possible (for social reasons) in many circumstances that I missed the fact that you were joking. I'm also afraid that I seem to have the faulty impression that you take yourself far too seriously far too often, for which I apologize, that it probably didn't even occur to me that you were making a joke. I'm sorry, I'll try to do a better job of keeping your jovial side in mind in the future. I will note in my defense however, that I don't seem to be the only one that misinterpreted your joke as a serious statement. But, be that as it may, one of the things that makes the PDML so much fun is that we don't take ourselves, or each other too seriously, and teasing and poking fun at each other and ourselves is a lot of that. If you don't like being teased like one of the gang, then I apologize, I'll try to restrict my conversations with you to the purely technical and factual. When I joke about, I joke about. When I'm having a technical or technique oriented discussion, I don't joke about unless it is perfectly
