PESOs a woody for Frank, and a couple others from the Folsom Street Fair

2012-09-24 Thread Larry Colen
The Folsom Street Fair is a San Francisco Leather Pride celebration. On one
hand it is an incredibly rich opportunity to photograph certain elements of
society enjoying life with an exuberance which is hard to believe. On the other
hand, sometimes seeing this exuberance makes you want to scrub your brain with
steel wool and bleach. I've got a set of photos from today that would probably
all be OK in most reasonably liberal workplaces. I did get one photo of
someone's woody, that I think Frank might appreciate:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/8018818394/

I think that this photo captures the exuberance, without showing anything too
outrageously risque:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/8018815163/

It was nearly as much fun checking out the camera gear in use at the fair. Of
course there was the usual assortment of canikon SLRs. I also saw a K-7 and two
full frame Pentax SLRs. One was an ME, I didn't catch what the other was. I
also saw an 8x10 view camera, a 6x7 rangefinder or two, several MF film
cameras, and a Nikon F set up to shoot from ground level. I was amused to note
this ginger, with a DSLR around her neck, photographing some of the local color
with her cell phone:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/8018824050/

While none of these photos are actually lewd, I advise caution as to who

Atget, whispering trees, and spending Sunday on the street

2012-09-24 Thread Derby Chang

Someone mentioned the Eugune Atget exhibit happening in Sydney at the
moment. Managed some time to see it yesterday, and it bears taking the
time. All are 8x10 contact contact prints, and beautifully toned. Highly
recommended.

Art and About is an annual art festival, with the pieces taking place on
the street (Sydney Life is part of it). Video is a significant part of
it this year, and fires up after sunset.

I hung around to take in Last Drinks, and the wonderful Emergence. Faces
projected onto trees in Hyde Park, to the soundtrack of old leftie
anthems, being whistled. The Internationale never sounded so moving.

Nice!

Sign printing folks do an awesome job these days. I've had some photos
printed at 3x3 feet by a sign printer onto a vinyl coated fabric and
they looked very good. If you pixel-peeped you could see the random
ink dithering, but it served to cover up the fact they were taken with
my 6 megapixel K100D Super, and these large prints are meant to be
viewed from 5 feet or more anyways.

Here're the deets on the guitar:

Frank, it's a Del Vecchio from Brazil:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Del_Vecchio_(guitar_maker)

Most likely one of the Dinâmico guitars. John told me it's an antique.
It's certainly really well used; half of the soundhole grills are
missing or caved in. They used gorgeous Brazilian wood in the top
plate.

Apparently rare outside Brazil, but semi-famous because Chet Atkins
played one. The construction is dubious and they're often out of tune,
but this one sounded wonderful, I thought.

OT - Shoulder injury update

2012-09-24 Thread knarftheria...@gmail.com
Got a call from the hospital yesterday. Upon reviewing x-rays they now see a
fracture and I should reattend Monday morning. Which I did.

Fracture of the clavical right near the tip. It's like a small chip got shaved
off.

Good news: should heal well. Six weeks in a sling and I should be good to ride
a bike.

So I am doing my job walking and on transit.

More good news: This time I have a driver with insurance. Due to Ontario's no
fault system it may be hard to get pain and suffering out of him but at least
out-of-pockets will be covered.

I actually think that bones may heal faster and more completely than soft
tissue (he says looking for a silver lining).

Hello all,

Here's a head-scratcher:

Tonight, I was shooting senior portraits of my son. We had gone out
to the track at the high school, a place he holds quite dear, for the
occasion. As the evening grew darker, I had my flash (540) set up on
a stand softbox, firing with the camera's wireless remote system.
All was fine, more or less, for several minutes. Until the camera
stopped shooting. I would press the shutter, and I'd get a flicker of
light (focus assist or pop up flash signalling the 540? not sure..),
but the shutter wouldn't fire. Several times I would re-focus and try
again, but nothing. I tried the following:

- turning the whole thing off on again
- turning off the focus assist light
- setting the AF to release priority, instead of focus priority
- using manual focus
- turning off flash, shooting manual exposure mode
- shooting in Av, Tv, Tav, P and AUTO

None of these got the shutter to fire.

We packed it in for the day, and when I got home, 20 minutes later, I
tried the camera again. Worked fine, in Av, M, Tav, etc... though I
didn't try it with the wireless flash again... Mind you, this whole
shutter mechanism was recently replaced (6 months ago) at CRIS. So,
I'm thinking I must be doing something wrong, or at least missing
something. What do you make of this? Any thoughts?

Lastly, just for fun -- a peso. My son, Nick, from tonight. Looking
as bad as he is able...

Thanks in advance--

that soft-tissue damage is much likelier to be a lengthier heal than

More good news: This time I have a driver with insurance. Due to Ontario's no

I actually think that bones may heal faster and more completely than soft

The day I was there, everyone was clustered around the bike and
ignoring the Wright Flyer. The bike just looks so modern.

Subject: PESOs a woody for Frank, and a couple others from the Folsom Street
 Fair

The Folsom Street Fair is a San Francisco Leather Pride celebration. On
one hand it is an incredibly rich opportunity to photograph certain elements
of society enjoying life with an exuberance which is hard to believe. On the
other hand, sometimes seeing this exuberance makes you want to scrub your
brain with steel wool and bleach. I've got a set of photos from today that
would probably all be OK in most reasonably liberal workplaces. I did get
one photo of someone's woody, that I think Frank might appreciate:
 http://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/8018818394/

I think that this photo captures the exuberance, without showing anything too
 outrageously risque:
 http://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/8018815163/

It was nearly as much fun checking out the camera gear in use at the fair.
Of course there was the usual assortment of canikon SLRs. I also saw a K-7
and two full frame Pentax SLRs. One was an ME, I didn't catch what the other
was. I also saw an 8x10 view camera, a 6x7 rangefinder or two, several MF
film cameras, and a Nikon F set up to shoot from ground level. I was amused
to note this ginger, with a DSLR around her neck, photographing some of the
local color with her cell phone:
 http://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/8018824050/

While none of these photos are actually lewd, I advise caution as to who
might be looking over your shoulder if and when you open the links.
My full set from the day is posted at:

This lens (FA 35mm f2) is a bit less sought after since the
introduction of the Pentax DA 35mm f/2.4 AL which, by all reports,
gives close to the same sort of performance for about half of the
price. I think that has reduced demand and prices on what this lens
was fetching prior that lens being introduced. If you think the full
frame will get here eventually and you want a lens that can then be
used on both, or the half stop is important to you, then the F or FA
are the way to go.

Re: K5 acting up?... plus a PESO

2012-09-24 Thread Bruce Walker
I love the shot.

Can't help specifically with the system glitch, but I wonder if
there's any chance the flash was the problem. The camera might be
waiting for signals from the P-TTL logic. Sometimes it helps the
wireless stuff if you add a reflector of some sort (eg tinfoil) to the
popup head to get more light over at the remote 540. I have even had
success holding my hand at an angle near the popup.

Honestly, I've just switched to using cheap radio triggers for remote
flash. All my random flash failures went away.

 Hello all,

Tonight, I was shooting senior portraits of my son. We had gone out

Looking

The K-7 is in almost all respects identical to the K-5 except for the
sensor. The K-7 and K20D share the same sensor family with similar IQ.
There is nothing wrong with the K20D, but it doesn't have the high ISO
performance of the K-5, neither does for all it's improvements the K-7.
However for $400 with only ~1200 shots it's a great deal.

I didn't have much range - couldn't get too far from the light stand

Yikes. Let's hope it's not a problem caused by the solution to a
different problem. That would be too much to bear...

Since it was just my son, not a client, I was shooting, and we were
only 2 blocks from home, I didn't bring the back-up gear that I
usually do to a shoot... the bag with the k7, extra lenses, flash.
Ive never needed them before, thankfully. But, I won't be leaving

All was fine, more or less, for several minutes. Until the camera

light (focus assist or pop up flash signalling the 540? not sure..),
but the shutter wouldn't fire. Several times I would re-focus and try
again, but nothing. I tried the following:

 - turning the whole thing off on again
 - turning off the focus assist light
 - setting the AF to release priority, instead of focus priority
 - using manual focus
 - turning off flash, shooting manual exposure mode
 - shooting in Av, Tv, Tav, P and AUTO

None of these got the shutter to fire.

I too have a replacement shutter mechanism in my K-5. I have had a couple of
issues in the past week where it just did some whacky shit with the flash
attached. Not allowing me to set the shutter speed faster than 1/90 second,
and other things. I had to take the battery out of the camera for a few
seconds to get it to behave.

I think it happened the first time about a week ago in SF, and I forgot about
it until it happened to me again yesterday. I am getting a bit nervous now.

Of course. And for a walk around lens size and weight can be important. For a
work lens, they're only a minor inconvenience. Changing lenses is much more
inconvenient. And since the DA* zoom, which was engineered for the APS-C image
circle, delivers results that are, in my experience, somewhat better than the
prime, which was not engineered for the task at hand, it makes much more sense
to use that lens. I also find that the lenses I use for work are the same once
I pick up for play. I'm accustomed to them, so they feel right. I've also
noticed that the FA 35/2 has required quite a bit of focus correction with my
last few Pentax cameras. To my mind that reinforces the idea that it's somewhat
mismatched.

Yes, I was thinking along those lines, too... I usually just use the
flash off-camera indoors, and I've never had an issue with the
wireless firing. Outside, in the middle of the track, though, found
I didn't have much range - couldn't get too far from the light stand
still get the flash to fire. I wonder if the reflect-y silver lining
of the softbox gets in the way of the flash/camera communication...?

And I did think maybe I should try some radio triggers... what kind
did you get? Whenever I start to think about getting some, I first
reason that I can rule out Pocket Wizards... But then, how cheap do
you go? I've considered the Paul C Buff triggers... but maybe ebay
 triggers are just fine...?

I've got some of the cheap chinese radio triggers, about $10 for each
transmitter or receiver. And they work OK, as long as the transmitter and
receiver are within a few feet of each other and there is nothing (like a
strobe body) between them. I get a fair number of missed triggers with them
anyways, but for studio work it's not like you're blowing a dollar's worth of
film/processing. Note: do not use fancy rechargeable batteries in the
receivers, they run at a lower voltage than regular AAA batteries, and don't
have nearly the sensitivity.

Paul C Buff makes some great gear, and for reasonable prices for what you get.

I recently acquired some old, simple pocket wizards. All they do is trigger,
no control over flash intensity or anything. They seem to work a lot better
than the cheap chinese ones.

In short, for $20 or so, the cheap ones will more or less do the job most of
the time, but you'll learn to love radio triggers and will eventually want to
upgrade. If you don't mind spending $20 (or a bit more if you get spares, a
trigger for your second body etc.) on something that you'll eventually just set
aside as a spare, and don't mind the occasional (1 in 8 or 10) shot where the
flash doesn't fire, they are a great deal.

lens.
The only similar lens I have used that meets or beats it is my
cherished tamron 180/2.5IF which is simply unbelievable and only cost
$500. The tamron 180mm generates images that look like they were shot with
a top notch 50mm they are so sharp.

Pentax literature points out how the final element of DA glass is
configured to direct the photons at right angles to the sensor to
compensate for the fact that the sensor is most sensitive to
perpendicular light. Film did not have this issue, hence FA glass (and
before) doesn't do this so the image will be fuzzier, especially off
center.

My understanding is that all DA glass has been created with this
astigmatism compensation specifically with sensors in mind.

This lens (FA 35mm f2) is a bit less sought after since the
introduction of the Pentax DA 35mm f/2.4 AL which, by all reports,
gives close to the same sort of performance for about half of the

http://photorumors.com/2010/11/09/some-pentax-rumors-new-pentax-a-135mm-f1-8-lens-and-more/

Not new old, and most digital ready lenses aren't any different from their
old non digital counterparts, except maybe for more effective non reflective
coatings on the rear element.

I believe if you compare the 40mm f2.8 formulas there appear to be no
real differences between the old M lens and the new DA lenses. Most of
that is marketing hype. Some lenses with elements deeply recessed into
the body of a camera may require that kind of change but when you take
the registration distance required by the mirror box of a typical SLR or
DSLR the geometry was pretty much already there.

Yes, I was thinking along those lines, too... I usually just use the

wireless firing. Outside, in the middle of the track, though, found
I didn't have much range - couldn't get too far from the light stand

of the softbox gets in the way of the flash/camera communication...?

For sure it does. For best range I've used another 540 on-camera in
controller mode to blast a pulse at the remote 540. Big waste of a
good flash though. I'd rather employ it as a hair or rim light.

The best softbox for doing this is the kind that leaves the flash
outside of it. Then you can swivel the body so the red detector window
is pointing toward your camera. $50 for a 24 popup one from Fotodiox.

And I did think maybe I should try some radio triggers... what kind

you go? I've considered the Paul C Buff triggers... but maybe ebay
 triggers are just fine...?

I'm really happy with the Cowboy Studios NPT-04 kit; I have two of
them. One trigger, two receivers for $32:

http://www.cowboystudio.com/product_p/npt-04+extra%20receiver.htm

They work for a great distance, and work fine at 1/160th sync speed. I
order them from Amazon.

Here's a critical thing though: clean all the contacts, battery and
hotshoe, thoroughly with electrical contact cleaner before any use.
They are quite sensitive to dirty contacts and will misfire badly if
you don't clean them. I keep some Q-tips with an aerosol can of Hosa
DeoxIT. And bring spare AAA dry cells for the receivers.

RE: a legendary FA 35 f/2 AL...

2012-09-24 Thread J.C. O'Connell
The theoretical advantage DA lenses have over FA lenses when used on APS-C
format is not so much they are designed for a sensor is that they are
designed for APS-C not 24x36mm format and hence dont need to cover as large
an image circle. This means they can use simpler more efficient optical
designs which improve both resolution and even contrast across the APS-C
frame if the design is radical in the case of the FA lens.

FA lenses don't have the edge sharpness that the DA lenses deliver. They're

This lens (FA 35mm f2) is a bit less sought after since the
introduction of the Pentax DA 35mm f/2.4 AL which, by all reports,
gives close to the same sort of performance for about half of the

used on both, or the half stop is important to you, then the F or FA
 are the way to go.

If it was a problem with P-TTL shouldn't the shutter have triggered in

clear right away.

Honestly, I've just switched to using cheap radio triggers for remote
flash. All my random flash failures went away.

a stand softbox, firing with the camera's wireless remote system.

Looking

Again, I'm just glad it wasn't much more serious than it was. It's a
shame you'll be off your bike for that long, but a real boon that you're

I'm also glad to hear it's not going to cost you out-of-pocket.

I had a bit of a mishap myself over the weekend, breaking up a fight
between a couple of drunk young ladies. I think I may have fractured my
kneecap on the floor when I got my foot hooked on a table leg in my
haste to get between them. I'm pretty confident I didn't sustain any
soft tissue damage, either -- thank goodness. It hurt like hell all day
yesterday, but most of the swelling has dissipated and now it just hurts
like hell when I put too much pressure on it, or bang it up against the
sort of things I'm always banging my knee against.

Not much can be done other than RICE (rest, ice, compression, elevation)
and ibuprofen. But now I have a distinctive gait -- so there's my silver

Hoping for your speedy recovery!

More good news: This time I have a driver with insurance. Due to Ontario's no

Yes, that is true Bruce but we must remember there are traditional
sensors and then there are the Sony Exmor sensors used in the K-x and
the K-5 (and presumably other models). Take a look at the fundamental
design change that the Exmor brought to the table, especially as it
affects off-axis light sensitivity:
http://www.antiqueauto.org/assets/ExmorSensorAdvantage.png

Instead of the light entering the microlens and travelling down a
virtual pipe before it gets to the photo diode, the microlens sits
directly ON the photodiode. What gets talked about all of the time is
how many more photons this captures (and so better performance in the
same low light when compared to other sensors) but what I don't see
get directly talked about is the obvious off-axis light performance.
Many Pentax lenses were designed as you say (and would thus work well
on either the old style or Exmor sensors. But I believe that the
performance of lenses made for film cameras (and the F and FA lenses)
would be significantly better on the Exmor sensored cameras than they
were on pre-Exmor sensored cameras.

I just can't find a lot of people that directly speak to this issue.
Maybe a question for Falk Lumo to consider, if he hasn't somewhere
already...

What I have never been able to understand is how teasing and making

don't break into a showboat jazz routine for comic relief:

You don't have to understand why people do it, you just have to remember that

Then you simply have to deal with the situation as it presents itself
 using the equipment you have.

These photos were all shot between 1am and 5am at the latenight dances. I
believe that the set should be publicly viewable, and not need a facebook
account. I do intend to sort the set down further before posting them on
flickr, choosing the ones that are the best photographically, rather than
just the shots that the dancers want, i.e. something clear enough of
themselves having a good time. Despite the technical limitations, I wouldn't
call them crappy blurry, underexposed photographs that look terrible.

They look fine to me too, although perhaps a little too fine. They are
too literal for my taste in portraying such an event. They look too
much like dance pictures on a floor might look under normal lighting.

If the situation is dark, the photos should also be dark to portray it
 accurately.

This is an ongoing aesthetic choice. It depends on whether the goal is to show
pictures of people dancing in a dimly lit room, or to show a picture of Meagan
and Josh having an enjoyable dance. Do note that it is almost always possible
to darken a photo in post processing, with little loss of quality, and possibly
even reducing the noise (similar to how Dolby NR on tape works), while it is
rarely possible to brighten an underexposed photo without loss of quality.

I wasn't whining. You said something about never finding max ISO to be
useful. I said that I do find it useful because I am often photographing in
situations where I lose less image quality by pushing harder on the ISO,
than I would by slowing the shutter speed down, or shooting several stops
 underexposed.

Gosh. OF COURSE I'll use maximum ISO *WHEN NEEDED* to get a photo,
whether I normally find it 'useful' or not. You vacillate from
interpreting what I write in the most literal possible way to
interpreting minus one as plus one and joking about, you know? It's
hard to have a discussion that way.

OK, you are right. Looking back through the archives I can see how you might
have been joking about change the light. I've had enough people make that
same statement, not understanding why it isn't possible (for social reasons) in
many circumstances that I missed the fact that you were joking. I'm also
afraid that I seem to have the faulty impression that you take yourself far too
seriously far too often, for which I apologize, that it probably didn't even
occur to me that you were making a joke. I'm sorry, I'll try to do a better

I will note in my defense however, that I don't seem to be the only one that

But, be that as it may, one of the things that makes the PDML so much fun is
that we don't take ourselves, or each other too seriously, and teasing and
