If you remember playing with a magnifying glass you will recall
that the image goes down to a point before it widens out again.
So the narrow point can go through the lens mount without being
cut off but the amount of light is not diminished.

Had an M35-70 2.8-3.5 for about 2 months.
I was quite happy with it optically, and it was a very usefull lens, but it
showed a "soft spot" in one corner at times, and the zooming got stuck twice
around 40mm.

I have never used the -7 but have
Phoenix 100mm F3.5 Macro at minimum focus distance:
With 1:1 adaptor (closeup lens) - 100mm
Without 1:1 adaptor (1:2, should be same as Pentax FA 100mm F3.5) - 265mm
With 1:1 adaptor, focused to 1:2 ratio - 195mm
More rough estimates with a ruler.
