blockquote, div.yahoo_quoted { margin-left: 0 !important; border-left:1px #715FFA solid !important; padding-left:1ex !important; background-color:white !important; } Same here, I dread this time of year. It's cold, dark and gray until May and also I am stuck inside till then. I am cold ALL the time and can only sleep with 2 heating pads. One under my neck and he other on my chest and neck. I also am in recovery and this time of year is always a struggle for me. Not much to do when I am Snowed in. So my plan now is to take it one day at a time, read and dwell on the positive. It can be a daily struggle sometimes, I agree Meredith. Maybe we could keep in touch and make this time more manageable for both of us?! Take care for now!! I was told by two doctors that there's not much can be done about it. It s a Case of no money no can do. I think if I could live nearby Denver or Miami I would be able to see some serious doctors. Cincinnati isn't the best place for a poor quad to live or even try to get by. When they say it's not about money you know it's about money. It makes me wonder why they kept me alive in 75 when they don't want to see me when predictable crap starts to occur. I am here because of their decision not mine. Just too stupid to die and to we'll mannered to off myself. Tiz the season, Sent from my Verizon Wireless 4G LTE smartphone

funny, I remember that clearly too. I asked them not to cut it then heard the scissors. Sunday will be my 24th anniversary. dianna I did hear the clippers as they shaved off most of my hair and the drill as they prepared to place the Crutchfield tongs in my head, but that was all. -Original Message- From: jume jume9...@comcast.net To: Nan nlg52...@yahoo.com; quad-list quad-list@eskimo.com Sent: Thu, Jun 12, 2014 1:24 pm Subject: Re: [QUAD-L] Unidentified subject! It was a Friday ... I woke up, did all my primping and went to school ... I was a sophomore in HS and my world was perfect. My parents had opened our pool earlier in the week, so I had invited my best friend and our boyfriends over for a swim after school. We got home about 2:30 and headed out back - full of youthful enthusiasm. We hit the pool playfully, used the diving board and the slide ... we were having a blast. Sometime before 3:30 (the details about time are a bit fuzzy), I took my last step. I walked to the slide, climbed the ladder, put my hands over my head and gracefully slid down hands first. The minute my head hit the water I felt a zing and everything stopped. I just floated in the water ... it felt like I was doing the jellyfish (aka dead man's) float, but I realized I couldn't move. I knew I was in trouble, and wondered if anyone else knew it. I directed my thoughts to my boyfriend ... Paul, help me. Please, see me. Please He was the only one who realized I wasn't playing. (I think I do believe in telepathy.) They pulled me up into the air, and I could breathe again. The next thing I remember is laying on the pool deck. It was hard to get a deep breath, but I was breathing on my own. People kept putting my hands across my stomach, and they would just fall off... again and again. I still don't know why they did that. Eventually a sheriff came - he wanted to do artificial respiration, but my neighbor sternly told him not to lay a f***ing finger on me. I was shocked to hear an adult use that word ... no one I knew used it back then. Finally an ambulance came, about 45 minutes after my accident. They lifted me onto their gurney (no manual stabilization, no C-collar, no back board), slid me into the back of the ambulance and placed a sandbag on either side of my neck. We rode to the hospital with one guy kneeling over me holding the sand bags and the other blaring the siren the whole way. Gave me one hell of a headache! At the hospital they cut off my bathing suit - I was so embarrassed. I was also appalled ... it was a borrowed suit after all - I scolded them for wrecking it. My memories start to fade out at that point. I did hear the clippers as they shaved off most of my hair and the drill as they prepared to place the Crutchfield tongs in my head, but that was all. Much later, I found out that the doctors had given me a 5% chance ... of surviving. I am 62 years old, and have forgotten so much of my life, yet these memories remain crystal clear. Time has not clouded them. You'd think by now these memories would only bring remembrance ... not regret and sorrow. Usually I celebrate each anniversary - the survival of one more year. This year, however, it's hit me hard. I am not needed as I once was. I am so lonely. Being dependent on others sucks. I want a do over - another chance. I don't want to be a quad any more. Thanks, O Quads, for being there to hear me.

prayers for you Nan! you have helped me so much over the last almost 16 years! love ya Nicki From: Nan [mailto:nlg52...@yahoo.com] Sent: Wednesday, June 11, 2014 6:34 PM To: quad-list Subject: [QUAD-L] Unidentified subject! June 7, 1968. A day just like today.

Re: [QUAD-L] Unidentified subject!
Hello broken leg, I was in approximately the same predicament that you are in. I broke my leg several years ago in three places, just below the knee, just above the ankle, and the third was the small bone. The first thing the doctor asked me was do you want me just to amputate. YEAH RIGHT! This doctor was trying to save another person's leg and it turned into gangrene and needed to be amputated. Sometimes I question in a doctor's intelligence. New doctor: my second opinion Dr. wasn't quite sure what to do and his young casting assistant suggested a Bob Jones cast. This cast is soft cast of cotton batting wrapped thickly of round the leg. The cotton batting was wrapped with Ace bandages and changed every two weeks. It held the bones in place, and no pressure sores from a hard cast. Works for me! Thats an interesting story. I see the positive here is you are determined to be independent and you never give up. You may need to look into a different type of footrest maybe that sticks out , so it would hit the shelf instead of your foot. a guy on youtube about your same level has such a footrest.type in Chris Colwell. This quad has some awesome vids. I knew a girl with spina bithida that switched to a power chair and broke her leg going in the doorway...she was 24 and died in the hospital from an infection. I am sorry to hear about your son's accident. I was on a ventilator with high fevers following my accident, but fortunately the fevers subsided after four or five months. Clearly some facilities are much better than others. Would your insurance allow you to move your son to another state with better facilities? I'm curious... is your son on a ventilator? If he is on a ventilator, this dramatically lowers your list of options. I would also like to know: what is an M VA 4-10-10 ? Unfortunately, there are some very nasty bugs which are spread in hospitals. If the primary problems deal with infections and fevers, maybe the best thing is to try to find the best doctor you can you could help you get these infections under control. I'm sorry to have any magic answers for you. But I am very glad that you found this forum. Greg, If you are *sweating buckets* because of being *backed up* I would suggest going to see a knowledgeable Physical Medicine and Rehab doc for advice and a check-up and options. Just my opinion. Re: [QUAD-L] Unidentified subject!
Greg [and all,] If you're sitting on your commode chair for two hours your sweating my have something to do with pressure--those seats aren't padded very well. It seems we all have our own systems for bowel programs, but sometimes things change. I'll describe how I do mine, in case it might be of help to others. As a c5-6 quad I am able to tell when I need to have a bowel movement because of a certain chill I get, plus some sweating that accompanies that (mild A.D. symptoms.) Generally I need to 'go' every other day, but it depends on how much, and what, I've had to eat or drink. Once I feel the need to use the toilet I inform my caregiver and he transfers me to my shower/commode chair, pulls my pants down, rolls me over the toilet and I do my business. Generally this takes less than 15 minutes and requires no suppository or digital stimulation. I do, however, use a stimulus that works well for me: Years ago I figured out that when in the shower if I sprayed a blast of hot water underneath me [onto my rectum] it would stimulate my bowels every time. The water has to be hot, but not hot enough to scald or burn, obviously. Anyhow, the hot water sprayed underneath, briefly, causes irritation and promotes the parastalsis to begin. My shower is right next to my toilet, so when I'm sitting on my commode chair over the toilet I can still use the [hand-held] showerhead to spray underneath me and get things started. This is also a good way to clean myself underneath, after the BM. Yes, the water does sometimes get all over the bathroom floor, but that's an easy cleanup with a towel. As such, I have found that a set bowel time for me every other day does not work. Because I let my body tell me when it's time my BMs are fairly natural, quick and easy. However, there are drawbacks to this system as well. First, it requires access to your caregiver at short notice [my caregiver lives with me, so it works out.] And, second, it's more difficult to schedule around. [Another thing that has always been a laxative/stimulant for me is coffee. A cup of coffee about 20 minutes before wanting to do a bowel program starts this moving for me.] I hope this info helps someone. Don. Re: [QUAD-L] Unidentified subject!
Greg, I had this problem too. Sometimes the poop just goes backup, especially using a 2nd magic bullet or enemeez. So, I only use 1 , if it does not come out, I wait 24 hrs and take milk/magnesia. this usually makes it come out. Like what others say, I changed my diet and started taking mirlax. I go now every other morning, 1 hour instead of 2, and no more digi-stem. It took awhile to get cleaned out (a few months) after starting tweaking my diet. I take 4 senokote the night before. This helps push it down. good luckI was very depressed with my bp. I dread it.but, thank god it is much better now. I was brought to the hospital for pneumonia. A few days after entering, my bowels became blocked (my bowels were not moving at all) after coming I was given Miralax along with several large glass of prune juice with no of magnesia 1 tablespoon. A few days later it finally started working. I've been taking bran cereal and now I'm taking 10 baby prrunes will along with senna and stool softener's. If I ever don't go I use Miralax prune juice with milk of magnesia. I also use enemas, which they say not to use in rehab. It's important to eat a lot of green leafy vegetables, whole-grain breads and fruits. I also think it helps to not gain weight Prunes are easier for me to eat than drink prune juice. The hospital is amazed at the number of senna I use, but it works for me. I started out with a small amount and I've had to increase. I rarely have accidents. my regular schedule is once every 4 days - I use a 2 qt water enema and it takes about 45 minutes for everything to evacuate. I seldom have accidents since starting this routine 10 years ago. I never like 'rushing' to the Jon in emergency mode. azdave c3-4 incomplete 1967 In a message dated 1/11/2011 3:55:32 P.M. Re: [QUAD-L] Unidentified subject or bowel program
i have been a part of the list since all most the beginning. this topic comes up all the time. there is no set in concrete best way to take care of your bowels. eat well, drink lots of water, and find what works for you. if you want to know what has worked from day one till now 20 years later for me its this. first off im a c5-c6 complete so what works for me might not for you. i do my bowel care every other morning. my caregiver comes in at 7am. im laying in bed on my right side with a peach pad under me. a pillow supports my back and another between my knees and ankles. caregiver clears the entrance with finger. puts in one magic bullet and one glycerine suppository. then rubs my tummy in circles a couple times. i put a folded one time hand towel on my chest for sweating. i try and fall back asleep for a while during the time i go. my caregiver also rests and comes back 1 1/2 hours later and cleans me up. results are usually good but sometimes not. i always after im cleaned up no matter the result, have the caregiver restimulate me and rub my stomach again. we wait a 1/2 hour more then clean me again if needed. thats it as for doing the deed. no sitting on a hard shower chair. i rest right through it most mornings. as far as diet goes i do have some rules for myself. on the days i did bowel care i dont eat any spicey foods or drink any alcohol. (good thing there is weed.) on the other day i eat anything i want and can drink alcohol if i want. thats it. i do eat fairly healthy but not anything special at all. as far as pills go i do take senna 1 pill twice a day and docusate 1 pill in evening on bowel care day and 2 pills in evening the other day. this program has always worked well. i average about 15 accidents a year and sometimes thats due to me breaking my rule of no spicy food or booze. also some accidents happen from illness or stress. i hope my way of taking care of the dirty deed works for someone. good luck, donald c5-c6 complete almost 20 years. I didn't use my chest strap, except in my van, for many years. On one particular occasion I was daydreaming as I crossed a wooden bridge and then it donned on me that I was going out into a busy sidewalk. So I sidled over to the left and accidentally hooked my left rear tire on the corner of the bridge. Since I was driving a Peachtree, it naturally through me to the left and I ended up barely off the sidewalk with my face all the way down at my knees and my rear wheels spinning hopelessly in the air. Thankfully it was a busy road and some wonderful gentleman who ride around in a golf cart doing work for the community came by and helped me out. What's truly sad is for 20 minutes cars drove by and did nothing. Thank goodness my image care at a bar that protected the actuator on the bottom of the wheelchair. That particular thing hooked a segment of the sidewalk as I was heading toward the ditch that I ended up dangling over. Then again there's that time I went off the sidewalk on the side of my house. I kept thinking I could get back up on the sidewalk in all I succeeded in doing was sliding further down the incline until I was wedged up against my neighbors wouldn't fence. Some of my neighbors came by about 20 minutes later and after getting more help from more neighbors, they were able to pull me out. Thankfully I was in the shade. That would've been a whole different story if I would've ended up in the sun down here in the middle of summer. It's 80° today and that's not even bad. Quadius PS I live in the Tampa area. On Wed, Apr 28, 2010 at 10:05 AM, greg g...@eskimo.com wrote: The other day I mentioned that I never go out by myself without my chest strap on, or without my phone. That night I took my dog for a quick pee check before bed. My chair is in the shop, so I'm in my backup. It has no chest strap. Usually when I go out alone, I put a strap around my headrest and my head and one arm. Since I was just going around the block... I didn't... nor did I take my phone. I'm part way around and my dog pees, so I turn around because it's shorter. My rear wheel slips off the sidewalk into the gravel and is stuck just a bit. My error was I was sitting with my back to far upright. So when my chair jerks when it gets unstuck, I start to fall/tip forward. I've done this before and my reflex is to gun the chair forward to help me sit back. I stop myself / the chair, before I get to the edge, the the fast stop makes me fall forward even more. I hit the joystick with my arm and off I go, right off the curb. Good thing was I was going forward not sideways so no tipping over. Plus my legrest hit the street and stopped my chair from going further into the street. Bad news was my legrest hits the street and I make a dead stop. No momentum to help me sit back up. So I'm stuck half off the curb, tipped forward on my lap, with no phone. At night not many cars drive by. Luckily I was there only about 3-4 minutes when I heard loud taking in the school parking lot across the street. I start yelling CAN SOMEONE HELP ME It took a minute of yelling before I heard them yelling back that they were on there way over. A man and lady out jogging. They were so nice, he was trying to sit me back up first, but was so careful. Like he was going to break me. Then they were able to lift my front wheels back up on the sidewalk. Then they asked if I needed them to walk home with me :-) After 28 years, that was the first time going off a curb. My dog was great, once I was tipping forward he got real excited. Not sure if he was worried about me or excited about me being lower and able reach him (he is small). But once I started yelling for help, he went barking crazy. He continued barking even after I stopped yelling, didn't stop until after they had sit me up and got my chair back on the sidewalk. The other day I mentioned that I never go out by myself without my chest strap on, or without my phone. That night I took my dog for a quick pee check before bed. Re: [QUAD-L] Unidentified subject!
I've been using my new Permobile rear wheel drive C350 for about seven weeks now and I have finally gotten used to the Magitek enough to be able to drive it at full speed in my community now. I don't try it on the sidewalks, but I'd definitely use the roads (one of the perks to living in a very small community). Right now my chair only does around 5 mph, but I can probably turn it up some. I do, however, think the Magitek dampens down the ability to drive to much faster than 6 or 7 mph. BTW, it took me quite a while to get used to the magitek. In fact, I still mess up at least a couple of times a day, but I'm getting better every day. Switching over from the Peachtree was a lot more difficult than I thought it would be, a chin control would have been a little too hard for me to use. That's just me though, there are more people using chin controls than magitek. I didn't realize until a couple of weeks after I started using the new chair that the magitek forces me to use a few different muscles in the shoulder and neck then I was using with the Peachtree. My TDX5 says it goes 7.5 mph. I go full speed any time I can, sidewalk, store isles, house hallways, trails walking the dog, etc. I too had the stopping speed slowed down so it does not stop real fast. My hand sometimes slips off the joystick, and I would tip forward from momentum. Now I always wear my chest strap whenever I go out alone. I want a 21st Century Bounder that can go 11 mph. It's better looking now than it was back then, but still not as nice looking as the TDX series. You really need rear wheel drive if you go over 7.5, or you can start to wobble a bit and fish tail. My niece use to stand on the battery box too. Then my TDX had the batteries under the seat, but she could stand on the rocker arms of the rear wheels. Though she said it hurt her feet. When she was older she stood on a skate board or roller blades and i would pull her. it would have been nice to tie a nice wagon on the back too. especially when going to fairs or farmers markets, etc. I'm always used as a carrier. Re: [QUAD-L] Unidentified subject!
You're right about that Dave. My chair goes about 8 mph, and I only use that speed when I'm on a smooth paved surface. When I'm going that speed the slightest bump would send me flying. I had to adjust the breaking time so that there would be a 12 second pause in case my hand slid off the controls. That way, the natural drag of the motors slows down the chair much slower then the abrupt stop that the electronics give. Forward this to everyone on your address list who you think would be willing to help your cause out. We should be able to quickly get hundreds of people using this and it won't cost them a cent. Why wouldn't you, or they, want to do it? I don't care if you're searching for the best way to pick your nose, we should be using the heck out of this. It'll be easy enough to check with Fergus to make sure they're getting the money. If you don't want to do this, then all I can say is there is truly no hope for us. Mike

I don't remember the story anymore but it seems to me that I checked with national on it and, whatever happened, it fell by the wayside. Well now I've just heard about it again from Stephanie at our North Carolina chapter. SCS is signed up on it and it is available to us as an excellent source of fundraising. Here's the deal. GoodSearch.com is a search engine that pays money back to your designated charity every time you use it. So every time you do an internet search for something, use GoodSearch instead of Google or Yahoo or whatever. For every search you do they'll pay a penny or so to SCS. That may not sound like much but it will add up, if we use it! THIS IS A NO-BRAINER FOLKS!!! If you're looking stuff up on the internet you're using a search engine so just use the one that will help us fund a cure. It's simple to do. Go to www.goodsearch.com http://www.goodsearch.com/ . You'll see the search box and then you'll see the box to choose your charity. Type in Spinal Cord Society (open up your internet browser in another window and do this with me now), check to see it's the Fergus Falls SCS then click 'verify'. Now every time you go to GoodSearch, SCS will be preset and all you have to do is start your searches to make us some money. There is also an 'amount raised' button so you can see just how much money is being raised. This money gets sent right to Fergus Falls. You'll also see GoodShop.com right below that. Do your online shopping from there and it'll do the same thing to make even more money. AGAIN, THIS IS A NO-BRAINER! Re: [QUAD-L] Unidentified subject!
Like many of the other people on this list, I suffer from low blood pressure frequently. It can be dangerous if it is too low. They have told me that if it's too low it can affect your kidneys and some other problems. You should definitely have a pressure cuff in order to see what's going on. I have some medicine here to raise my blood pressure, but I choose not to take it in less it's absolutely necessary. Definitely question the doctor as to why you need to take this type of medication if you don't think it's necessary. q On Wed, Apr 1, 2009 at 4:39 PM, Danny Hearn ddh...@sbcglobal.net wrote: -- Quadius C2-3 incomplete 13 years post injury
RE: [QUAD-L] Unidentified subject!
If you don't mind me asking, which medication is it that you're taking? Craig Hospital put me on some while ago but I believe my general practitioner Dr. had me stop taking it because my blood pressure was doing okay. My normal blood pressure is about 130/70 unless I have a bladder infection which then drops to about 100/60. Another thing I have is Nitro pills for if I start having an autonomic dysreflexia episode and my blood pressure skyrockets I put one under my tongue, thank God it hasn't gotten that bad yet.
