  Fellow Mac lovers,

As you should already be aware, we are combining
  Quadlist, the Compact
Macs list, and the Vintage Macs list into a single
  Vintage Macs list
hosted by Google Groups. The new list functions a
  lot like the email
lists we're use to, but with some improvements:

  1. You can manage your subscription. Change mode.
  Unsubscribe. Set to
No Mail while you go on vacation. Add another
 email
  address. Etc.

  2. You can read the list archive online. You can
  also search it using
Google's search engine. And subscribers can also
  post replies online.

  3. No more [EMAIL PROTECTED] WARNING messages.

  4. No more space wasted with all the list
 folderoll
  you see here. And
no ads in list emails. (The only drawback for us,
  since some of the
lists do generate a bit of income.)

I hope to see all of you there. We will be
 shutting
  down the existing
680x0 lists at the end of the week.

[q] REDUCED after intervention: Centris 650

2005-12-07 Thread Mark

Other than the externals, you have a $10 computer. The
externals themselves are not likely to fetch more than
$25, as a scsi cd burner is going to be slow and
archaic.

So where are you getting this $200 figure and why are
you posting ads on quadlist?

[q] software for a GV 56k Modem

2005-01-27 Thread Mark Adrian
Hello all,

Anyone know where I can get software for a Global Village 56k modem
(that what it says on the bottom of the modem, no v92 or x2, just 56k)?
I tried the GV link from Gamba's site and all I could find were updaters
for their modems. Also, does anyone have their Quad set up as a fax
machine? Just looking for a few tips.

Thanks in advance,

Mark

quick monitor question

2003-12-17 Thread Mark Koan
Somewhat once removed, but:

my friend wants to network a pc, a linux box and a
mac, but he wants to only use one monitor for the
three machines. So if i give him a mac, he'll need
some sort of adapter to use with the monitor switcher?
Does anyone know even what sort of monitor switcher
could do this?

But the main question is should i give him a ci or LC
475? I'd rather him have the ci for its coproccesor,
but i suspect there would be monitor issues worse with
the ci to use with a generic adapter? is this true?

LC575 display craziness

2003-07-14 Thread Mark Koan
In my experience, the 500's seem to be very sensitive
to power line interference, moreso than any other
mac's I ahve dealt with. If the room is close to even
the telephone lines, the 575 acts wavy and jumpy.

If you move it back to the basement and the problem
goes away, then it is some sort of outside eletrical problem.

Fwd: AppleWorks 5 questions

2003-06-24 Thread Mark Koan
AppleWorks scrolls slower in Page View, and when
scrolling down quickly in a document, it is kind of
distracting to see that grey skip at the bottom of
every page. Word is quicker cux it does not do
this---by default, page view is off. Same with
Tex-Edit and BB Edit.

I don't really wanna use Microsoft, but why can't
Apple let me choose how to open documents? And why put
a command on the menu that is always unavailable?
Makes no sense.

  Hi Mark,

You don't. Word processing documents are *always*
 in page view.

You could set the margins on the page (Format
 Document) to 0 inches.
You should note that this will cause havoc when
 you print as your
printer will cut off anything that is outside its
 built-in margins
(normally about 1/2 inch on all sides.)

I'm curious though... why wouldn't you want to see
 how your document
  will print?

  smiles,

580/575/630 mb questions

I have a motherboard from a LC 580, which I understand

Can it by any chance be modified to run in a ci?

Also as further aside, I also read this list on a PC, are there many others?
I'd do it on a Mac except I don't have a mac modem for my quadra (hurrah

This is my end... for now...

2003-03-10 Thread Mark Benson
I'm afraid that the recent weeks on LEM have been fairly harrowing for
me personally. I have more or less discovered that my heart is no
longer in it and my mindset is no longer correct. Therefore I feel I
have no option, in order to relieve me from what has become a wretched
task of filtering out and marking 'read' all the LEM List mail i get
without so much as reading it. I am resigning from my post as the List
Nanny of Vintage Macs, and leaving all the lists except Mac-UK. I have
made some great friends through the years on LEM, but also seem to have
made a few most unsavory enemies.

For everyone's information this stand-down does not indicate anything
about my intents or loyalties, I'm simply depressed with the way things
have got on the lists and don't want the stress or hassle. I hope to
god the relevant folks around here come to to their senses (however
needs to) and sort out the mess once and for all.

I might return one day, when i don't have an answer to a question, but
in the mean time I'm gone. I'll still be around on the scene, and
indeed will continue to work on a new site for 68k Mac ppl. As they
say, if you need me, you know where I am. I thank those that have
stood with me for the journey for their friendship and trust and I hope
I can keep in touch with most of you. As for those who caused trouble
or made my and other people's life hard, I hope your happy.

Remember the old quote Steve Jobs took from Dylan at the 1984
shareholders meeting, it's become a bit of a guide to my life:

Come writers and critics
  Who prophesize with your pen
  And keep your eyes wide
  The chance won't come again
  And don't speak too soon
For the wheel's still in spin
  And there's no tellin' who
  That it's namin'.
  For the loser now
  Will be later to win
For the times they are a-changin'

Goodbye. Stay well, and god-speed.

Special-Shutdown.

Goodbye.

what your seeing is a marginal vram stick and video corruption i the

and see if the image corruption changes to another area.

I have had this problem with VRAM in PCI PowerMAcs. I had a 7500 and a
7300 and the VRAM worked in the 7500 and not the 7300 (both in OS X
10.1.5). It seems to be a weirdosity that some Apple machines have. It
may be that there is a bad VRAM chip in there but it only manifests
itself on an 840av due to the speeds and stresses the 840av puts thru
the video system.

4x512k wont work in the 840. Some machines like the Q950 will take the
 512k
vram but only use 256k of each stick.

512k SIMMs are usually recognised as 256k on an 840av. I think there
are 1 or two 512ks that don't work properly.

do you see a -80 on the chips?

or -8 or a number 80 or 8. *Generally Speaking* 512k VRAM SIMMs
have 4 large chips on, and 256ks only have 2 on one side. This is not
an absolute but it's what I generally find in my large crop of
variously upgraded LCs.

Like Mark said, that happens on occasion. The 840AV is probably the
 pickiest
Mac ever made when it comes to RAM and VRAM speeds, and a chip that's
 only
marginally out of spec might work fine in every other 68K but fail in
 the 840AV.

I have also had trouble with VRAM in Power Macs seating badly, as well
as in odd LCs. Maybe, as the speckles say in one place while u move the
RAM, you have a flakey VRAM socket or dirty contacts in one of the
socket beds.

What you're describing is *exactly* the problem that happens when VRAM
 is too
slow for a system; a 575 will demonstrate *identical* symptoms with 80
 ns VRAM
(at least, most of the time) when the bus is clocked past about 40 MHz.
Stepping up to 70 ns VRAM solves the problem. Some 80 ns VRAM modules
 work
just fine, however, which proves that VRAM spec'd at a single speed
 clearly
isn't 100% consistent in its performance. Some 80 ns VRAM is, to put
 it
bluntly, faster than other 80 ns VRAM.

But the VRAM is 70ns, it says so in the chips. I don't think that is
the problem here. It's either it doesn't like 512k VRAM or the VRAM is
not seating well. VRAM in Macs is so fickle, I have solved corruption
problem in a 7500 by taking the VRAM out, juggling it and putting it
back in a different order. It's a crazy science!

It sounds like you just need to find some different VRAM modules and
 put those
to use somewhere that isn't so timing-sensitive.

Like LCs :).

How does it have the final say in whether or not your computer boots??

In the case of the 475s, you'll find a full explanation in the FAQ.

Erm, wow, what an answer ;).

The PRAM holds all the settings for the computer that it needs to boot,
such as what SCSI device it is to boot from by default and what screen
size to use.

The PRAM in the LC475 is a fickle beast. It requires a good battery to
even show a video signal at startup. Try this little dodge (at your own
risk of course):

Turn on the LC475
Wait for the hard disk to spin up as normal
Once the hard disk is FULLY spun up and initialised turn the machine
off and on in rapid succession.
If it boots it is definitely the PRAM.
If not, pull out the battery and try the above again
If that all fails unplug all power and the battery and leave it to
stand for a while.

Re: LC 630 / CD Rom replacement.

On Monday, Jan 27, 2003, at 13:09 Europe/London, the pickle wrote:

What CD Roms can I use in the 630? Any particular specs apart from
 scsi?

 Not really :)

You are better off, if you want a CD-ROM only, replacing it with
another Apple badged unit. This will ensure maximum compatibility and
also that you can boot from the CD drive. It also better ensures the
drive will fit the 630 (see below). Stripped Apple SCSI units are
pretty easy to find on LEM Swap and places like that.

Will the 630 recognise a CD RW?

 Yep, quite nicely.

Yes, using Toast 4.1.2 or earlier. It's not really worth going much
faster than 4x CD-R though as the 68k probably can't manage a CD-R much
faster. My 7300/200 struggled to write to a FireWire CD-RW at more than
12x, but that might well have been the FW card that sucked :).

  Any precautions?

They can be a bit tricky to get out, but they're not too bad.

You have to be *very* careful where the rear connectors are on the CD
drive for the 630. The CD drive attaches to the computer via a series
of edge connectors. These plug into the power, SCSI and Audio-out ports
of the CD-ROM drive. If they are more than a few mm either side of
where they should be it will not fit the machine without you modify the
carrier inside the machine.

Re: 840av

2003-01-19 Thread Mark Benson
My advice is that if you have an iMac or something for burning or even
a 604e PowerMac that you capture raw files on the 840av and then copy
them over ethernet to the better machine and compress them on there.
The time is probably comparable to what it takes to compress MPEG on an
840av, and you can watch the video for proofing straight after you have
compressed it. It is also easier to find the speed and disk space
required on newer machines for multiple, copies of one file.

I'm afraid that fact it is only a 68040/40MHz means, despite the ATT

No, the license belongs to the person who buys the software, and is
know as the End User License Agreement, or EULA. This, in most if not
all cases, can be legally transfered from one user to another fro a
monetary sum at least one. As an example is is legal for an end user to
transfer EULA license of Windows XP (just plucked that one out of the
blue because it is one of the few EULAs I've read - I'm not trolling)
to another user once.

Therefore it is not illegal or frowned upon to sell genuine licensed
copies of software to others for a fee equivalent to the software's
intrinsic value. Duplicating and selling, or giving away, by physical,
digital or paper means however violates the owners EULA, and is illegal.

Limewire is a pit of filth that does nothing but spread the evil taint
of piracy in music and software. It is the fault of networks like that
that has prompted the ridiculous means people go to to protect their
licenses. People make great news fodder of Microsoft's Product
Activation, or the new copy protected CDs that stop them being ripped
(as someone who has a massive library of completely legal MP3s from my
vast CD collection I personally find that particular one very hard to
swallow) but in reality it is the fault of the software pirate that
these have come about.

I'm no saint, I've done it before but now I am a working man I refuse

As I understand it, only the owner of the copywrite has the right to
sell a license; however, if it isn't forbidden in the license, the
holder of the license may transfer their right to a new holder (and
subsequently give up their right to future use of that software

DigitalFilm card problems/solutions

2003-01-17 Thread Mark Benson
Sorry - had to do a widespread trawl across the remaining NuBus lists
to get an answer as the 1st-Powermacs list ppl seem stumped.

I have a SuperMac DigitalFilm kit. It has a 15-pin monitor output on
the breakout box but it doesn't seem to output any video my monitor (a
very useful 17 .25dp PC monitor that handles practically any res.
between 320x200 an 2040x1536) can understand. It seems to thing the
signal has a horizontal scan of 15Khz, which is TV frequency.

Does anyone know a way of resetting it or resetting the PRAM to make it
display at a standard Res?

Nancy, did I read correctly? there is *NO* ROM??? if
that is true IT WILL NEVER start up, you gotta get a
hold of a Q840AV ROM... there is no other way on earth
for the quadra to startup properly... Perhars there
are some laying around on ebay?

Wrong! To my knowledge the 840av never carried anything in the ROM slot. Mine doesn't
even has the carrier soldered on the board as it's a later mark 840av (tray loading
CD, manual inject floppy) from Cork. Wre have had this discussion before a while back.

It's definitely not a lack of ROM AFAIK, if I'm wrong feel free to slap me down.

logic board settings.

I had a semi-stroke of sorta genius while i was thinking about my newly acquired
mountaion of LCs I tested last night. I fired up an LCII and got a chime and a grey
screen but no more. I discovered it had no VRAM. The LCII is fairly primative comapred
to the 840av so the 840av may test for good VRAM before the chime and stop if it
detects a fault.

Pull ANY VRAM off the board that is in the slots. If it still fails to start I'd
SUSPECT a VRAM failure in the soldered bank :(.

disks than a NAS unit, purely because I got bored and changed them ever
few weeks :).

I found also that it would lock up solid on the first screen (gray
screen with mouse locked in top corner) if I either attached a SCSI
drive it didn't like, or attached a SCSI cable backwards, or something
similar. Unplug the SCSI ribbon cable (large ribbon at the rear of the
Logic Board) completely, take it down to 32MB RAM, and turn it on and
see what happens. If mine, Scott's ans Sque's theory is correct it
should boot to a grey screen with a floppy in the middle with a
flashing '?'. This doesn't look like much but it is progress, TRUST ME
:). At that point putting in a System 7.5.3 Disk Tools disk should boot
it.

If this works as described then you should plug the SCSI ribbon back in
at the logic board and unplug the hard disk (which is a pig to do in
that tight space) and try starting it again. If THAT doesn't work
reattach the hard disk and detach the CD-ROM drive. If that fails it
may be a bad cable. If a new cable fails I fear it may be the onboard
SCSI.

I have Jackhammer with a 9GB U160 (i know, i know, but it was all I

I thought for the longest time it was a dud card until I figured out

I have similar problems with mine. I think it may be later versions of
Quicktime but It's a long time since I set mine up. I'd have to go to
the trouble of setting up 7.1 with Quicktime 1.6.1 and the 088 enabler

There's no way it'll work (just to throw another hat in the ring) as

LC 580

2002-11-23 Thread Mark Falzon
Does anyone know if you can put an LC 580 MB in an LC 520? Also, can you
use 32 MB 72 pin Simms in a laserwriter pro 630 printer. It seems like you
could use 32 MB Simms but only 16 MB would be recognized. I have extra 32
MB Simms to use, but no 16 MB.

It does, it is missing the lug-holes at the for the 2 plastic keys, and
the connector is slightly different (but will almost certainly still
fit). I'm not sure about the length. Looks a bit long but it might just
be the picture.

 However, it has a +5V trickle. So here's a going-way-out-on-a-limb
 thought: what if you
used this as a PSU in an LC? Does the mobo have a +5V trickle that
 would
enable this PSU to give the LCs soft-power capability?

Nope. You could try feeding the +5V trickle over the +5V line on the LC
to see if it could pickup the sense signal but I doubt it would. I
would like to know how it is triggered to on if it has no switch. It
may be on all the time? It might need to be laoded on the trickle line?
I don't know enough about this sorta thing.

Yep, thought so. IIRC that's how ATX supplies work too. The is there a

I could easily have used SoundJam to turn it into a JukeBox but the
sound was just too limp compared to my G3.

 2) watch TV.

Picture;s not great, lets be honest. I get a much higher quality
picture using a VCR plugged through my 840av.

 3) play videos (and DVD's if I hook that up).

Playing PAL videos in a predominantly NTSC country is very cool. As for
DVDs I don't think I am going to be satisfied until I get a 23 HD
Cinema display ;).

 4) play the latest video games.

Wow. That is kinda neat. I guess the picture quality isn't fantastic
but who has the cash for a 28 HDTV Widescreen television anyway?

 5) get on the internet (when I get my wife to OK broadband :)

Now that IS worth a shot :), it'll be slightly sluggish for internet
use, even with broadband. Be warned that 68k MAcs are not great at
decoding JPEG images so the load time on some pages will be
looonn

Now that's what I call a Home Entertainment System, and for a total
 of $34.45!
You just gotta look for a Mac's strong points, and kit it out right.

For $34.45 it's great. I guess I had many of the features better
elsewhere before or during the time I had a 630CD so I'm not looking at
it from the same POV. I'm just bringing it into a perspective. I dunno
what your guys would pay for a basic quality 15 TV over there but I
suspect it's cheaper and does more stuff.

Some older adapters are made specifically for Macs that use 'Sync on

If you monitor does not support this it would be without that sync line

monitor which is an SVGA PC no name model. Am I right or have

to buying a new adaptor or giving up on the whole idea?

Some older adapters are made specifically for Macs that use 'Sync on
green' such as Mac II and early nubus or pds graphics boards. This
would mean one of the sync lines would be on the green colour channel.
If you monitor does not support this it would be without that sync line
(in this case v.sync) causing the picture to scroll. Get a new adapter,
one with at least 10 switches and make sure you get the instruction
sheet with it as they are hard to work without one.

the drive sits too low in the 840 auto inject bracket
for a floppy to eject properly. Does the 8100 have a
different floppy bracket than the 840? If so will
that bracket fit in the 840? Thanks.

My 840av has a plastic 'sled' that the manual inject drive attaches to
via the screw mount points in the BASe of the drive. I also know from
other machines I have worked on that swapping the floppy from auto- to
manual-inject will lead to alignment problems. The 8100 sled and floppy
should fit the 800 and 840av. Can you describe what the auto-inject
bracket looks like?

OK, so what size are the drives? What CD-RW are we looking at?

As an add-on to my previous post, OS 8.0 (which should really be

Re: Hello, Quadlisters!

 Greetings!

Hello :).

But am I missing some fatal flaw that would make me want to migrate to
 another '040?

The hell no :). I think you are making very good use of an old machine
and, while it's not exactly a sprinting machine, it's pretty nice all
the same.

 Here is my setup:

Quadra 700/50 MHz Sonnet QuadDoubler, 68 MB RAM, 2 MB VRAM, 2 GB 7200
 rpm
Baracuda HD, with a 17 Apple Color Monitor, Apple 600e CD ROM Drive,
OneScanner, Personal LaserWriter 320, all PAINSTAKINGLY painted flat
 black
and dull-coted (looks great, too). It is running 7.1 with a few
 add-ins
from Gamba's site and a 7.5.5 System Folder. I use Eudora 3.1.3 and
 iCab
and older versions of my favorite applications. This old thing, when
running this setup, feels quite fast in the finder, is not bad on the
 WWW,
and is really fun for me to use.

Holly cow. It's a really nice piece of work you got there. The black
paint must look awesome. Imagines his 840av and '805' in black and
drools on his keyboard

I also love Macintosh IIci machines (I have a pretty jazzed up IIci in
my arsenal :) ). The cases look a little clunky by modern standards but
there is a charm about them I can't quite place, perhaps the easy
opening case or reversible desktop/tower option. Since the Q700 is in
the same case, apart from the front panel details, it seems fine to me
to love yours, especially in black :).

So (again), what am I missing here? Should I get a different Quadra
 and
 transfer my upgrades to it?

Hell no, you have put a lot of effort into your setup as it is, don't
go ripping it apart for a little extra speed and RAM. I find 68MB fine
on any 68k apart from my 840av which is a vid. cap. platform so needs
all it can get.

Is this a viable only system for me at home?

H... I'm a little biased as I have a shiny Jaguarified G3/400 on my
deks and an iBook 300
in my napsack so I couldn't, I tried to use my 840av as an 'only'
system and couldn't. If you are used to it and can accept it's limits
there is no reason why YOU can't though.

I use a Lombard as my main machine, but the mother board is in the
 throes
 of a slow death.

Ouchy :(. That's not nice :*(

I will then be left with this 700 hobby machine and my
trusty SE/30 as my only web and productivity machines until I can save
 up
the cash needed to buy a new Mac (which will be quite a while,
 unfortunately for me...)

I am in a similar if not nearly so badly stricken position, I had to
twist my bank manager's arm to get the £400 for my G3/400 but I'm glad
I did, at least my bank manager had a sore arm for a few hours ;).

Have I invested too much time in a Mac that is dead end rather than low
 end? HELP!!

No. There is no such thing. I believe that the more you invest in a Mac
the more it gives you back.

Well I have a pair of 9GB drives in mine :). Really it is only limited

 3. what is the max ram this will take.

128MB, 4x32MB. Not bad for a machine built in 1992!

 4. can i put a cdrw in place of the cd and what version of toast will
 i need.

Yeh, 1x or 2x CD-R drive are available on eBay real cheap. Toast 3.1.4
I believe is a good one for 68ks but, having a combo drive in my G3, I
have never needed to investigate, sorry, that sounded terrible but I
can't help having a spiffy computer!! Get a cheap copy on eBay or the
LEM Swap List.

the current os is 8.0 on all of the drives.

Only the drive that contains the folder called 'System Folder' has the
OS on. The others are just file storage for stuff. Do you know if it
has 3 actual hard disks in or 3 partitions? It's really hard to get 3
hard disks in there and I'd like to know how it was done. The lid is
easily removed (turn the machine off for piece of mind!), just unscrew
the 4 tabs at the back and slide the metal shell forwards.

IIRC on the 840AV you need to add VRAM to use both the DA-15 video

Before trying to switch to NTSC make sure you have a monitor

It takes Quadra 512MB VRAM SIMMs. I *think* they have to be 60ns, not

7.1 hacks and other stuff

2002-09-12 Thread Mark

I'd like to encourage Scott to document his hacks to
7.1; I myself have been contemplating downgrading from
8.1 and 7.5.3 rev 2. 8.1 seems to manage the memory
better, but then again, it takes double the ram to
run. 7.5 does have the Open Transport, and I'm hooking
my mac's up to an ethernet network. But I'd love to
get the OT and the Modern memory manager working for
7.1!

Also, can anyone on the list help me identify this odd
card: it is green and about 6 inches long, maybe 3
inches across. It is connected to a silver metal bar,
where a SCSI port sits. The bar in fact says in big
white letters SCSI PORT. On the card itself is a
silver chip that says: TXC 40.000 Mhz 500NT 9641. Then
there's a black chip that says: DTCT 436E. It looks
like it has on its edge 36 pins that might slide into
some sort of expansion slot---though none I've ever
seen. On the card there is also some writing, a
diagram really, of J1/J2 on/off/ pnp.

Any guesses?

Re: 840av

2002-08-26 Thread Mark Benson

As you know, there is no PPC card for a Q840.

  Uh-huh. Exactly :)

Wouldn't the one for the LC475 work?

Definitely not. The LCs only have PDS Slots and the PDS slot on the
840av, although present, is AV functions only and very titchy and
generally non-standard.

The answer therefore is Nope.

But the LC475 upgrade goes directly into the 040 socket, not the PDS slot.

Aaa, I see. Still probably nope but it'd be worth a shot. Anyone
got one they could lend me?

Re: Confusion!

2002-08-19 Thread Mark Benson

Eh, I've used my 68ks for browsing, and it's not a waste of time. It does
require patience, but it's far from a waste of time. It's quite tolerable
on my my 640CD and Quadra 840AV.

Using iCab it's positively gratifying, I have browsed Apple's own
website using iCab on a 50Mhz accelerated SE/30 before now and, even
if it is in Black and White, it has a definite cool factor :).

I can say that with iCab and a 68040 powered Quadra or LC Mac it's a
very useful thing. I don't personally browse on 68ks as I have a
PowerMac 7500 (w/ 604e/200) and an iBook 300Mhz going 24/7 but I know
it can be done. Just avoid Netscape.

Re: I've been here for a while and am now particapating

2002-08-18 Thread Mark Benson

Can you tell me you actually LIKED that beast???

I did own a 5300-CS Powerbook at one time, the one that was subject to
all the recalls and battery problems. Even after mine got fixed, this
thing would burn your legs after 20 minutes of use! Those batteries
still got HOT with usage!

My iBook does that too. I just put a newspaper on my legs.

I wish I could've loved mine. It had a 603e PPC processor at 117-MHz,
but it was dog-poop slow compared to my anemic PowerMac 7200/90. The
reason was mainly because the Powerbook had no Level 2 cache at all
(that I'm aware of, and if it did have one, it was not just anemic, it
had lukemia --sp--). It sucked where speed was concerned.

IT was probably the 603e. The 100-120MHz 603es suck as far as I can
tell. I have a 6300CD (was a Q 630 to keep it on topic ;) ) and it's
not particularly at running OS 8.1, even though it's got a nice
7200rpm hard disk in it.

Just another lesson: DON'T buy ANYTHING that's first generation. Same
thing applies to x.0 software -- wait for the updates/upgrades before
plunging in. I've been there/done that far too many times now. I know.

See OS 7.1, 8.1, 9.1, 10.1, 10.2 etc

I do have but one exception. My 300MHz iBook its a gem and it's an
original Jan. 1999 Tangy. It has, granted, had the hard disk replaced
with a 10GB unit as part of the refurb, and I fitted a 256MB DIMM and
an Airport Card but that just makes a good machine even sweeter. The
only thing I had a problem with was the power adapter but mwahh,
that's not part of the computer. It runs 10.1.5 as sweet as a nut (OK
it's not a G4 but it's almost as good as a 500Mhz iceBook) and copes
well with being bounced around the place.

(Exceptions to this rule seem to be Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop.)

Not so, the new versions always need patches. In fact, according to
the head of the Cartographic department at my Uni, Illustrator 9.0.2
is littered with bugs.

Re: 840 Quadra system upgrade

2002-08-16 Thread Mark Benson

Hello, can someone tell me if I can upgrade my 840 Quadra running system 8.0
to 8.5 or higher. I am not sure on its limitations. Thank you.
[EMAIL PROTECTED]

No, the 68040 powered Macs will only go up to Mac OS 8.1. 8.1 is
pretty good however on the 840av and is sufficient to run
applications like AppleWorks 5.0 and other reasonably up to date 68k
compatible apps.

Re: Quadra 650 - PPC Upgrade / Broadband

2002-08-15 Thread Mark Benson

Wait til T1 shows up in your area. We have it via RF link to
houses/businesses here in Star Valley on west side of Wyoming. 25x
faster than 53K modem and 6x faster than DSL with [to date - 6 months
after installation - no problems] for install fee of 450.00 and monthly
cost of 25.00 - what I was paying ISP for unlimited 53K connection.

$450 is a bit much for the average man to fork out, even as a one-off
installation fee. I think most people would be happy with DSL to be
honest, unless you regularly download Linux/BSD Distros and other
large data files.

Me, well I'm stuck here on a 64k ISDN line but it does the job and
it's on 24/7 so I don't much care :).

Re: Quadra 650 - PPC Upgrade

2002-08-15 Thread Mark Benson

I have a Quadra 650 at home, and am getting Road Runner. Unfortunately,
the minimum requirements are 75 MHz PPC running System 8.6 or higher. Of
course, I can use my Windose work laptop, but I am hoping to find a
cheap solution for my Mac. From what I was able to dig up, I have the
following options:
1) Buy a used PPC Mac (saw PCI clone PowerMac 7200 / 90 MHz for $175)
2) Buy an apple PPC daughter board (don't know how much used ones cost)
3) Buy a 7100 / 80 MHz motherboard upgrade kit ($100 from Nexcomp)

Am I missing anything? I'd be grateful for any recommendations.

A router. It's as simple as that. We were going to piss about with
USB modems and such on our ISDN line but instead plumped for a low
cost ISDN router. It's as good as gold, doesn't care what OS your
machines are running and it's small and silent. Especially with DSL,
you can use more than one computer at once with zero fuss, just
attach it to an existing LAN.

LC 520/580 and ethernet

2002-08-13 Thread Mark

I am trying to get these two machines on a cable-modem
internet connection; actually, my mac's will be on a
router that originates from a pc. The 580 seems to
have an ethernet port, but the 520 doesn't.
Suggestions?

Also, what's the going rate these days for memory for
these machines?

LEM European Swap List.

2002-08-09 Thread Mark Benson

Firstly sorry for the cross post but I want to get as wide an
audience of 68k users as I can. I know it's off topic but it does
concern LEM business (potentially) and is of genuine interest to a
great number of people inside the European Union.

The reason for this message is to ask any EU residents who subscribe
to the LEM lists if they would like to see a European Swap List on
LEM. I have 5 people already who have come out in support of the idea
but anyone else who would be willing to put there names forward in
support of the idea please e-mail me off-list to let me know. The
more people who support this idea the more likely it is we can
persuade Dan to do it when he restructures the lists around
LEMlists.com later this year.

We believe this idea would be greatly advantageous to EU member as
the current Swap List is predominantly US/Canada based and it is not
so easy for EU members to get stuff in from over there. Trade is
pretty much restriction free in the EU (thanks to EU free trade laws)
so an EU swap list has potential to be very useful to those inside
the EU that use these lists. It also takes more emphasis to sell on
other lists away for those EU user that may become frustrated by
their EU sales items getting swamped on the main Swap List.

Thank You in advance for any support.

Quadra - Epson printer

2002-07-28 Thread Mark McCague

Thats why I got the Epson 750. Last printer I could find (in my part of the
world) that has a Apple serial port. It was bought to replace a Personal
LaserWriter LS which stopped working and which the repair shop lost. Other
than work processing I can't really think what to use the Quadra for. Its
too slow for a MP3 server or encoding machine. Besides the 9500 I have has
the advantage of PCI slots so it can take a USB card, which makes it
possible to do a lot more with it.

Re: 630

2002-06-25 Thread Mark Benson

Erm, no. it's the model numbers 631CD, 630 DOS Compatable and the 640 DOS
Compatable which had 2 SIMM slots.

Well it's funny that I have a Performa 630 (with CD) and it's got 2
SIMM slots. To the best of my knowledge it's never been a DOS machine
either. Kinda puts a bit of a clanger on that theory don't it ;).

I think you will find that it is very much more arbitrary as to
whether Apple put 2 or 1 slot logic boards in the machines in
question. From my experience trying to fathom the mystery of when
they swapped from the 2nd to the 3rd design of LC case, I can tell
you it's probably not even related to the model of machine, instead
it depends on what was available at the time and which models
required what related to other parts needed and used. Sound
complicated? Sure it is, that's what designing as manufacturing
process is all about.

My theory is that, while the 630 machines were being made and sold,
Apple was making the boards on a batch process and shipping them to
their various assembly plants to be put into the cases (which are all
the same bar the CD/non CD bezels -AFAIK). At some stage they merged
in a new design of logic board with more memory space available (2
slots instead of 1) to be used on all models. This filtered into all
the machines eventually but meant that some lines got old boards and
some new, inevitably. If you polled every single 63x machine in the
US and Europe you may be able, after cross referencing the data with
the time of release of various models, to determine a rough timescale
for the transition but no more than that, unless you look at the
manufacturing and assembly logs.

It's only a theory but I think it's pretty sound.

Re: 630

as far as I know, the 631 was the only of the series to come with 2 ram
slots - others only had one... or had one and the solder pads to connect
another if you were determined :). My 630 also only has the one RAM slot.

Well my Perform,a 630 has 2 RAM slots. I just looked. They are on the
left edge of the logic board (looking from the back) and are slightly
staggered from each other.

The ethernet card from the 475 has a very similar connector to a NuBus
one - it's an LC PDS slot card.

They might look the same but I can assure you, as Dana says, they
ain't the same. Notice also that the slot in the 630 is significantly
longer and has an extended part at the inside end that is 6x3 pins in
size. This is a key distinguishing feature from NuBus slots as non of
the NuBus slots were that long.

Cable Internet and the 840av

2002-06-16 Thread Mark H

I realize that this has been covered before (many times!), but I cannot find
the e-mails I saved or reference to set up in the FAQ. I should tell you
the internet connectivity was running fine under 7.5.5, but other things
were not, so I decided to wipe the HD and update to 8.1. I have an Asante
Friendlynet adapter that is getting power and connects good to the ethernet
cable (I think, the light on it goes green at least).

840 is configured as follows:
40mb RAM
1.2 gig HD w/ OS 8.1 (fresh, clean install as of yesterday)
IE 3.01 and Netscape 3.01 (both to be updated asap)
Only stuff on the hard drive is what was on the 8.0 install CD and the 8.1
updater.

840 is set up as follows:
Under TCP/IP
  Connect via: Ethernet
  Configure:Using DHCP Server
IP Address: will be supplied by server
Subnet mask: will be supplied by server
Router address: will be supplied by server
Name serve addr: will be supplied by server
  Search domains: left blank

Under advanced options:
  Make TCP/IP:
Active is checked
Load only when needed is unchecked

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thx. It's still not running to plan but it's mostly software niggles

Does it truly write to your RAID?

No, and I don't think it ever will but hey, it was a nice idea :).

I don't think the 8.1 version OF ASP does slot info. As
far as other utilities go it shows up in the 'about'
dialog of the Radius Dynamic Desktop CP as a 'DeskStudio
1.0 b4' which is what it is (DeskStudio, made by BUG, is
actually the Japanese version but it's the same card).
If anyone has the original DeskStudio Extensions or
something like that I'll try those instead...

SPAV doesn't require Radius Dynamic Desktop, which might simnly bring out
incompatibilities. Radius Dynamic Desktop seems to be aimed at VVS users.
AFAIK Radius Dynamic Desktop never did ship with SPAV. I would disable
all of that stuff, and try to run a a minimum set of just the necessary
extensions, especially Quicktime version whatever (free v2.5 is a good
staring point) and Spigot AV Extension v1.1.

Well seeing as how I have a Radius Thunder IV 1360 GX Graphics card
I'd rather not disable the DSP Support and the Dynamic desktop
support. I never intended to use it with the SPAV card it was just a
reference to show the card wasn't dead, I'm bad but I'm not that
stupid ;).

I got it to work anyway, you know what it was? I HAVE to have a
monitor plugged into the onboard graphics controller to use the AV
system's video digitizer, not into the NuBus graphics card. Man some
things are just to finikity for their own good!!

Do try it with the Jackhammer stuff completely disabled. The SPAV likes
to write to a single spindle drive.

I did that, I even pulled the card out too. Several people have said
it prefers non-RAID but I can't see why it matters or for that matter
how it can tell. Either way it didn't make a jot of difference.

BTW are we talking Q840av now?

Yes.

Re: Spigot Power AV Problem

2002-06-09 Thread Mark Benson

Hmm. I have a Q840AV running 8.1 with a Spigot Power AV. I'll power it
up in a few and see what all I have in the way of control panels and
extensions and what all shows up where.

The card is, beyond doubt, perfectly 100% fine. I got it to work
under 7.1 and actually recorded via it. I used it with QT 1.6.2 and
2.1 with no trouble (using the 1.1.1 driver). As soon as I tried it
with OS 7.5 is wouldn't have it. Now I'm stuck as my AV drives are
both 9GB and the roof for Volumes in 7.1 is 2GB which is damn all use
to me really. Also Avid Videoshop doesn't run under Sys 7.1. So
either I have an Spigot or I have my AV drives and I can't currently
have both. Does anyone know if there is a newer ROM than 1.0? That's
what mine is but I suspect there is a better one maybe, I dunno if
it's flashable

Re: Spigot Power AV Problem

2002-06-07 Thread Mark Benson

If you wish, I can email you Spigot AV Extension v1.1. Maybe it would
work for you, like it would for me.

I can't go earlier than 7.6.0 as I have an FWB RAID 0
array on my Jackhammer (also newly installed and going
 like a train ) and it doesn't load in 7.5.5 (I don' t
have the FWB RTK extension installed, does that help??).

AFAIK SPAV and SPRO are not compatible with mutiple disk arrays.
Single-disk capture is recommended. I've found success with OS 8.1 and
lower.

Interesting, I'm willing to try anything. I have taken the following measures:

Seating - it damn well IS seated right I've checked repeatedly, taken
it out and putzed around with it and put it back in and still no
dice. I swear it is being detected but something else, possibly the
bus or something , is preventing it from working fully.

Drivers - I have the 1.1 Drivers for the Spigot AV line (the readme
includes the PowerAV so I presume it's the right driver, still no
dice.

Quicktime - I have tried the following versions:
1.6.2
2.1
2.5
3.0
4.0.2
and non work.

System - I have tried 7.5.5, 7.6.0 and 8.1

Other - I have zapped the PRAM, removed the card and zapped the PRAM
and them re-installed it, I've tried fresh copies of both the 1.0 and
1.1 drivers and still it refuses to work.

I'm at my wits end. I'm just glad it's not 1994 and I didn't pay
several 100s of dollars for it, or I'd be mighty miffed. As it was I
only paid $14.99 plus a bit of shipping to get it over to the UK.
