[RBW] Re: Moustache vs. Noodle bar reach overlay with pics

2013-04-04 Thread Joe Bernard
The reality is any technical reach similarities are completely overwhelmed
by real-world experience. I've never met/heard-of a rider switching from
drops to Moustache Bars who didn't need a shorter/taller stem to make the
reach work.

moustaches have a shorter reach than noodles both at the hooks and bar ends
 by about almost 2cm.

Keep in mind that the mouth of the hand (between thumb and first
finger) will be behind the metal part of the stache bar hook and not on a
 hood, like on drops.

But will it* feel* like a shorter reach in real use (that would be
 good!)?

The Rams have heat treated downtubes and chainstays, giving a bit more
stiffness and power transmission than un treated tubes. I don't know about
AHH or Romulus. Not sure what their tube thicknesses were either. The
geometries vary between AHH and the other two by enough to affect the feel.
I think they all use good quality Japanese or other tubing and RBW custom
lugs and drop outs.

Roms were wonderful deals while they lasted and still are great looking
bikes. Never made in my size though. Fortunately the blue Rams came in
smaller frames too and I got one.

Re: [RBW] Re: Experimenting with crank length

2013-04-04 Thread Jim Thill - Hiawatha Cyclery
Working with Mark Stonich (Bikesmith) the other night on a Dimension/Andel 175
mm mountain double crank I bought for this project, I came away with some 153
mm cranks for the ladyfriend. We'll see how it goes. For a lot of cycling
enthusiasts, conditioned to the notion that 5 mm of crank length is a huge
difference, 153 sounds ridiculously short. But they don't actually look weird.
On a small bike, they look right. Proportional. Of course, looks can be
deceiving, but my sense is that 153 mm is far from an extreme solution to a
bike fit issue.

Incidentally, Mark S shortened some Sugino cranks for me a few years ago. In
that case, the purpose was kid cranks for my tandem. I think they're 90 or 100
mm. So far, many miles have been happily pedaled on those cranks, by kids aged
3-7.

Re: [RBW] Re: What's the Biggest Advantage of Stem-mounted Shifters?

2013-04-04 Thread René Sterental
It's not hard, but if you've never done it before, you may want to use the
bike shop. You'll need a cable/housing cutter and a couple of replacement
cables just in case. Measure twice, cut once, and if you somehow can't get
the bike to shift well (some minor derailers adjustments may be needed),
then take it to the bike shop or learn how to adjust them.

I'd say go for it if you have the cables and cable cutter. Plenty of
information online if you need some instructional references.

[RBW] Re: Homemade basket quick release video is up.

2013-04-04 Thread clayton
*This is the basket I used*
:
http://www.jbikes.net/square-metal-wire-beach-cruiser-bicycle-bike-basket-white-p-969.html?gclid=CJysl9OusbYCFeZxQgodgXIACw
(I used black)

Parts list:
1) Allen bolts and nylocks for the buckle and tongue. They need to have the
flattest heads possible. I used low domed allens. The top of the bail
buckle lands on the top allen head, and if it is too tall the buckle won't
cam over to it's closed position. The buckle should have the nuts on the *
inside* of the basket and the tongue should have the nuts on the bottom of
the basket to prevent tearing up your items in the basket.
2) One spacer made from thick walled aluminum tubing to be used between the
basket top mounting plate and lower hole on the bail buckle. Length will
depend on your basket, buckle and rack. This is needed to ensure the buckle
has an arc to stay locked over.
3) Two pieces of aluminum flat bar to sandwich the basket wires for the
upper hole buckle. I filed shallow grooves on the inside of the plates to
encapsulate the wires.
4) One piece of aluminum flat bar for the tongue.
5) Tinker mind and some skill at filing, drilling, fitting and measuring.
6) Patience.

Have fun!

There are other brands of 'staches, and maybe they are longer reach. I

 has a different reach.

I think it will be fun to try other styles of bars. I am used to drops,
so I am looking forward to trying moustache and Albatross bars to see how
 they feel.

[RBW] Re: What's that response called, and which model has it?

2013-04-04 Thread Cyclofiend Jim
After a reasonably low-mileage year in 2012, it's taken me about 2 1/2
months to get back to my bikes feeling springy this year...

Specifically to your questions: The Rambouillet and the Romulus are as
much the same bike as you are likely to find. (Minor variant of course
being the Canti-Rom which may have used slightly beefier seatstay tubing
for the canti-mount posts). So anything said about one can be inferred to
the other.

The Ram/Rom and Hilsen are different bikes, as you would expect from a
wider triangle and different design ideas separated by a number of years
and iterations of models. Hilsen with more clearance for tires and probably
a bit beefier tubing overall. Different lugs and dimensions. I'd say if
you are looking for a refinement of the Ram/Rom towards the snappy end of
the spectrum, I'd go to the Roadeo. In my mind, Roadeo is to Ram/Rom as
Ram/Rom is to Hilsen.

The idea of Urge / Surge / Springy / Planey has a ton of inherent
variables. Cadence. Pedaling Style. Gear Choice. Rider Condition.
Topography. That's _before_ you get to the whole issue of component
choice. When I test rode the Hilsen for the first time, it only had 28 mm
tires on it. (At the time, they were still waiting for the first batch of
Jack Browns). It was a different ride. I would use the term snappier.
But, I sure wouldn't go to that tire size for my regular type of riding,
which needs to deal with pavement, fire roads, rocks and singletrack
(hopefully on the same ride).

You also have the idea of platform-specific-strength. For example, with
the gearing I run on the Quickbeam (fixed 77), I develop a certain cadence
and way of pedaling for the roads in my region. When I switch over to the
Hilsen with its coastable, multi-gear setup, it leaves me pretty torched
for the first ride or two - pushing bigger gears at slower cadence and
lower gears at high rate is a whole different set of muscle firing
sequences.

I do have to ask why you want to duplicate a bike you already have. I find
that Rivendells in particular lend themselves to tweaking and refinements
and reworking. If you get a little tired of a setup, they respond well to
upgrades and changes. If you are looking for something that has more
clearance for bigger tires - a development which is really pretty amazing -
then as I say, Hilsen is a little stouter and Roadeo is a bit snappier.

Hope that helps a bit.

Re: [RBW] Re: What's the Biggest Advantage of Stem-mounted Shifters?

2013-04-04 Thread Philip Williamson
Agreed. Good tools are worthwhile, but you can do it without the Park
cutter. I just cut some (Jagwire) shifter housing with my regular
sidecutters, and it was very hard. Not impossible. I've never used the
real tool, but now I might get one.

You shouldn't need replacement cables, since you're shortening things, but
if you do cut one cable or housing short, steal the rear one and just
replace that.
After you cut the housing, poke an awl into the end to open up the plastic
liner, and square up the end with a file or sanding block. If you're
careful with the pliers, you can reuse the cable ends, too. Squish 'em open
and slide them off. You get a square hole, but it works about 80% of the
time.

Re: [RBW] Re: Experimenting with crank length

2013-04-04 Thread Garth
Yes ... 153 is not all that radical ! There are many triathletes that
are using cranks as short as your kids !!! No Joke and they wouldn't
be doing it if it didn't work for them !! You can get certain brands
stock quite short, in a 110mm BCD. Origin8 goes to 140mm and a few go down
to the 120's. Of course, when you go that short you must consider having a
large enough frame to be able to keep the bars raised !!Triathletes
don't have that issue of course .

It's funny how long held beliefs about things can be changed in a heartbeat
That's the beauty of LIFE !!!

cycling enthusiasts, conditioned to the notion that 5 mm of crank length is
a huge difference, 153 sounds ridiculously short. But they don't actually
look weird. On a small bike, they look right. Proportional. Of course,
looks can be deceiving, but my sense is that 153 mm is far from an
extreme solution to a bike fit issue.

Incidentally, Mark S shortened some Sugino cranks for me a few years ago.
In that case, the purpose was kid cranks for my tandem. I think they're 90
or 100 mm. So far, many miles have been happily pedaled on those cranks, by
 kids aged 3-7.

[RBW] Re: What's the Biggest Advantage of Stem-mounted Shifters?

2013-04-04 Thread Joe Bernard
Thanks, Ron! It came to me as a mostly-complete bike from Jason Leach a
couple weeks ago. I added the cockpit, which is flipped Nitto 3-speed
bars of indeterminate nomenclature (bought years ago, then stashed), Nitto
Tallux, early-'90s Ritchey-labeled Dia-Compe brake levers, Ergon grips, and
the shifters. I also swapped in a Nitto S83 seatpost and Brooks saddle, and
the Mavic rear derailer. The rest came with the bike, including the Shimano
34-48 compact double cranks, which I think are RSX with the sticker
removed. It's a really nice bike..I'm thrilled with it.

Jan:

Just speculating here, but I wonder if it was because so many early
derailers were chain actuated, which made the cable angle less critical,
allowing for more varied cable routing. Then the next generation of
derailers required the cable to enter from the rear, which pretty much
limited routing to along the chainstay.

If anyone's inclined to try a top tube-mounted position, Problem Solvers has
a clamp on shifter mount. Designed as 31.8mm clamp with shims for 28.6mm

[RBW] Good commute on the Hillborne

2013-04-04 Thread Eric Platt
No photos, but had a good, extended commute on the Hillborne today. Ended
up heading down to Hiawatha Cyclery after work to purchase a few items, two
of which, Nitto bar end plugs and King bottle cages ended up on the Sam
Hillborne.

Then while riding home, ended up drafting list member Doug Magney who was
on his Hunqapilar. We ended up riding together for a couple miles. Made
me chuckle in that there were two Rivendells riding together and each bike
had an extra tube. BTW, Doug is a fast rider, which you'd never guess
looking at the Big Apples and Albatross bars on the bike. Was struggling
just to keep up.

30 miles today and still no urge to make any radical changes to the setup.
Have changed a couple items around and added a kickstand, but that's about
it. This is pretty rare for me. Most bikes have one setup, then the
second and maybe a third before I settle on something. Even my SimpleOne
has a new stem and bar. (Which reminds me, need to get that bike out of
the garage at least once in the near future.)

Only worry so far with the Hillborne is am liking the flat bars enough that
my drop bar bikes are getting totally ignored.

Regarding fat tires: I'm going to put 35s on the new Ram (bro brought
wheelset -- last item!) and I use fat ones on the Fargo and 1.35s on the
commuter Riv fixie, but I've been climbing a steep, 1 mile hill on various
bikes and I have to say that the 17.5 lb 75 gofast, with sub 200 gram 22
mm 650C (see) skinnies, climbs that hill and all others better than any
other bike I own or have owned, and this consistently over 10 years or more.

I won't be giving up the lightweight, skinny wheelset. Fatter tires on all
other bikes, but not on this one: well, I will probably replace the 23s --
Michelin Pro Race 3s -- with 25s, but not any fatter or heavier, until
someone can tell me what makes this bike climb so well.

I'd try them if they came in a 559 size that fit my frames (I bet a true 37
would fit).

I have pretty decent 559X32 mm (32 actual, 34/1.35 labeled) Kojaks on one
of the Rivs and even so, not like the gofast.

Seriously, if a fat, cush tire would climb as fast as the skinnies, I'd
switch.

Hey Jim -- Why duplicate a bike I already have? The Rom in general is the

never really been the right size for me. I bought it at a local shop here
in the SF Bay Area that was a Riv dealer. This was before I was familiar
with the Riv sizing philosophy. The shop advertised that they always did a
complete fitting for any bike they sold, but the most they would do for me
was to look at me on the bike and say, Yeah, that looks good. Go for it.
What did I know? It seemed OK on a relatively short ride.

If Roms or Rambs were still available new, I'd be on one in a minute. So
far, I haven't seen used examples of either locally that would be the right
 size (57 or 58). It's always something!
