If really interested, we need to talk wheels. Dyno wheel shown stays with me.
Original front Atlas-rim Riv wheel is yours.
You choose between the wide, stiff, colorful 700c Clem wheel shown (my fave) or
the original rear Atlas-rim Riv wheel.
Bike is in Excellent Condition. Can't promise you there are zero chain slaps,
but I didn't find any. The rest follows in kind.
I am 89pbh and it set up a bit high for my visual taste, but perfectly
comfortable.

2018-04-12 Thread James Warren
Andy,There's no way to make you not feel bad over the break, but in addition to that I hope you're also able to get excited about the repair and possibly new cosmetics. To me, the Ram isn't just beautiful because of the color. It's a result of a great color painted onto that well-made steel functional beauty. Many colors will be beautiful on that awesome frame, it's awesome that it's repairable, and maybe the change (in color or new rack mounts or whatever) will be fun. I find it very satisfying to ride a well-repaired steel bike and to know that the thing is tough.-Jim W.-Original Message-

Tuesday afternoon I put my Rambouillet in the work stand to check everything over before the inaugural ride of the neighborhood coffee shop group ride and I noticed my rear brake caliper moving way too much when I stopped the rear wheel. I thought that my mounting bolt was loose.Upon closer examination I realized the tubular bridge between the stays has completely broken its brazing and is free to rotate when the back brake is applied. Not a little bit, a lot.Scientific analysis couldn't determine a worse day of the year to be looking for frame repair/repaint or get a new one. I know the paint alone is going to be big if I have the original finish replicated. I'm just sick about it.Andy Cheatham Pittsburgh

Thanks, Paul! RE Lord of the Rings: may I boldly suggest: Read, don’t watch?
Jackson failed to grasp a lot of what Tolkien wrote and bulloxed core concepts
like just war theory (Entmoot result), human dignity and capacity for good
(Farimir’s initial response), depth of friendship (betrayal by Sam of Frodo on
the Stair of Ungolath), among others. I now refuse to watch the movies, and
have never seen any of the Hobbit movies. What I get for being a stuffy
theologian. Grin. The book — well worth an annual read. Grin.

[RBW] Re: I think I'm going to throw up

2018-04-12 Thread Kieran J
Even though I feel your pain (it does suck for sure!), I had a chuckle at
this. I almost wish this would happen to me so I had a strong-arm reason to
address a few issues that have stacked up with my orange Boo-Yay.

I'd move the two bridges and gain a bit of rear tire clearance. Moving the
brake bridge and chainstay bridges up/forward a little would match the fork
tire clearance, so I could run proper 35s and fenders. I would also take
the opportunity to repair the small dent in the TT and the mildly mangled
seat cluster that was there when I bought the frame. I'd also install
mid-fork bosses and then repaint a colour of utmost awesomeness. Some days
I like the creamsicle - others, not so much.

I know how much you love your Ram Andy - hope you get it well again soon!

slidey marks on someone's new stem if they buy the bike. Buy it, slam it!

thanks joe! it looks great on your bike. I did put the rack i have on her
bike - but it was the large version. Maybe that made the difference. I had
a much bigger gap when setting the bike up than I see in your pictures.
Maybe I'll have to retry it.

Years ago I did have a right dropout failure at the stay that Riv repaired

not so much from the riding while the dropout was broken but up and down

[RBW] rear racks and long chainstays

Sky: I have the Big Rack (medium) on my long-stays Cheviot. In these pics the

[RBW] Analog Cycles Moving Sale: Save that date + new details

2018-04-12 Thread James / Analog Cycles
Hey All,

Analog Cycles, the DC area Riv/Crust dealer, is moving to VT on April
24th. On the 20th and 21st, we're hosting an old fashioned yard sale.
It's 90% bike stuff, with a handful of life stuff in there. 8-3 both
days. Don't show up at 7:30, or we'll give you the stink eye. Prices are
gunna be super low. No negotiating unless you bring stuff to barter with.
Cash or Card, no checks. 9 Kline Blvd, Frederick MD 21701.

Here's the deal:

Lots of good parts and frames.
-Riv and Crust frames
-Velocity Rims
-Schmidt and SP hubs
-Simworks stuff
-Nitto bars and stems, new and used
-Some camping gear
-Some weird old bike parts
-Berthoud and carradice bags
-Connex chains
-SKS Fenders
-WTB tires
-Really nice stainless cables for half off.
-Green Grips bar tape
-Brooks saddles

and way more. It's a whole bunch of stuff.
Some of the stuff will be deeply discounted, some of it just moderately
so.

If you want a frame, the discount will be X. If you want a frame and
wheels, we'll build the wheels in June, and ship them down to you, and the
frame will be X - a certain percentage, plus we'll give you a credit on the
wheel build for 100 bucks. If you want a frame and a complete build, we'll
bring the frame with us, build it, and give you an even better deal on the
frame and pay for shipping as well as give you a 250 dollar credit toward
the build.

Hope to see you out there! -James

[RBW] Re: I think I'm going to throw up

2018-04-12 Thread Leslie
Given you're in Pennsylvania, I'll second the idea of taking it to Bilenky.

What I did when I had Bilenky repair my son's Ram frame, was I had them not
repaint (as they normally want to do), then I masked off and painted a
limited area with a cream to match the headtube... as his was a having a
derailleur hanger replaced, it was easy enough to just paint the dropout
area, whereas for your case, it'll have to take more of the paint off the
seatstays higher up: will have to repaint the entire seatstays...

Good luck

Dear Andy,

That is a weird failure. Is the chainstay/dropout/top eye broken or
something to allow movement in the rear triangle?

Depending on your aesthetic needs, getting a competent framebuilder to
replace the stay and primer/rattlecan the repair will be the low-rent way
to get it fixed and back on the road. The paint will be more than the
repair otherwise.

Re: [RBW] I think I'm going to throw up

2018-04-12 Thread Patrick Moore
Ooof! Sorry to hear that. How did that happen?

I've had similar, if less momentous experiences, as when screwing in the
fender bolt to the newly installed threaded boss on the brake bridge on the
2003 Riv, I found that I'd snugged the bolt up to the point where I'd
stripped out the threads (Chauncey didn't give enough depth to the boss).

I don't know what color your Ram is, but I do know that modern
powdercoating, by someone who knows bikes, can turn out very pretty indeed.

[RBW] I think I'm going to throw up

2018-04-12 Thread ascpgh
Tuesday afternoon I put my Rambouillet in the work stand to check
everything over before the inaugural ride of the neighborhood coffee shop
group ride and I noticed my rear brake caliper moving way too much when I
stopped the rear wheel. I thought that my mounting bolt was loose.

Upon closer examination I realized the tubular bridge between the stays has
completely broken its brazing and is free to rotate when the back brake is
applied. Not a little bit, a lot.

Scientific analysis couldn't determine a worse day of the year to be
looking for frame repair/repaint or get a new one. I know the paint alone
is going to be big if I have the original finish replicated.

I'm just sick about it.

[RBW] FS Protovelo/mystery bike 57cm

2018-04-12 Thread BenG
Part of the batch of Rivendell prototypes that initiated the now-omnipresent
long chainstays. I bought it from Rivendell in Feb 2015. Fully lugged, built by
Mark Nobilette in USA with swoopy asymmetrical extra-stays. This one is 57cm,
brown with cream lug cutouts trimmed in gold, and has the Appaloosa headbadge.
The deal includes Rich-built wheels; guarded double crank and wide 8spd
cassette; Bullmoose bar in short-ish stem: whole bike except saddle and
pedals. Need $1900 for wedding cash flow (only a daughter opens the gate to
this path). Will take a week after payment to pack and ship. Pics tonight.

[RBW] SF Bay Area: Bike camping at Pescadero Creek for the 2018 Swift Campout!

2018-04-12 Thread Reed Kennedy
Hey folks! I'm putting together a Rivish / BOBish bike ride and camping
trip on the San Francisco peninsula for the upcoming 2018 Swift Campout on
June 23rd. All are welcome! These are the longest weekend days of the year.
Why not spend 'em on a bicycle?

Here's the rough plan so far:
Day 1, Saturday June 23rd:

   - Route: *https://ridewithgps.com/routes/27216913
   *
   - 45 miles, 4,700 ft climbing
   - Head out from Millbrae BART at 10am (meet in front of the elevator,
   near the palm trees)
   - Lunch at Alice's Restaurant
   - There are some dirt trails that parallel Skyline, which we could do or
   not do
   - Last 5 miles are an easy dirt road, rideable on a road bike. We should
be able to ride the whole way to camp, no need to push or carry your bike.
   - Set camp at Tarwater Trail Camp, Pescadero Creek County Park (no water
at camp, bring what you need!)
   - Camp dinner, hang out, sleep in the woods

Day 2, Sunday June 24th:

   - Route: *https://ridewithgps.com/routes/27216975
   *
   - 29 miles, 2,700 ft climbing
   - Wake up, have breakfast, strike camp
   - First 5 miles are on the same dirt road
   - Stop off at the Cupertino Bike Shop if we're in the mood (super famous
old school bike shop, almost a bike museum)
   - Lunch in Cupertino, Sunnyvale, or Mountain View (In-N-Out?)
   - Caltrain home from Mountain View station

I'm gonna make time to test-ride this route before the campout but so far I
think the above looks pretty swell. I'm excited about it! Also happy to
hear thoughts or advice if you have 'em.

Here's the Swift Campout page for the ride: https://swiftcampout.
com/camper/sofauxboho/

If you'd like to join us for the ride please do! The best way to stay
up-to-date is to join the Bay Area Rivendell Riders mailing list (which is
not just for Rivendell riders these days): https://groups.google.
com/forum/#!forum/bay-area-rivendell-riders

If you wanna come along but don't wanna join another mailing list just drop
me a line. I'll keep you in the loop.

Cheers,
Reed Kennedy

[RBW] Re: Bill's 57cm Legolas build thread

2018-04-12 Thread William R.
Really nice Bill. I dig the color choice too. Will look forward to the full
build and the reports from the kinds of rides you get up to on this Legolas.

I like Romans color too. And the mixed Neo Retros on his. I never thought
of doing that, but I will now! Another thing I am noticing on Romans is
that he has attached something that looks like a cable adjuster to the
release connector on his front Neo Retro. That is a great idea: to attach
some kind of handle there that facilitates pulling that release out. I
carry pliers with me for that purpose. I love my Neo Retros on my
Appaloosa, but releasing them can be a pain. I'm going to try something
like that. I wonder if he spot welded that on there or just glued it with
Gorilla glue or something. I may contact him, but thought you might know.

Enjoy the build!

2018-04-12 Thread Bill Lindsay
The Legolas name is owned by the family of the author of Lord of the
Rings. They don't allow Rivendell to promote bikes with names taken from
LotR. That's part of the reason you don't see Legolas, Bombadil or
Quickbeam anywhere prominent in Riv communication.

This bike was not replaced in the Riv lineup. The Legolas is a pure
cyclocross racing bike. There is no cyclocross racing bike in the normal
Rivendell lineup. I think of this bike as being Mark A's bike. Mark A is
a cyclocross racer, and this is his bike, in my mind. Mark was really
happy that I got one, and that I'm going to use it for stripped down short
fast dirt rides, like a cyclocross race. It could be a gravel racer as
well, but it's a race bike. It is not an all rounder. It is not a country
bike. It is not a touring bike. It's a racing bike.

[RBW] Bill's 57cm Legolas build thread

2018-04-12 Thread Bill Lindsay

I'll post build photos here on my new Legolas. Here's the frame, sitting
on Grant's 'desk'. I picked it up yesterday.

That's a shop-copy of the forthcoming catalog on the table top there. All
us Hail Mary participants will receive one. I don't know if it will really
be that big, or if it's like a 'proof'. I've looked it over but have not
memorized it. There's some cool stuff in the catalog.

Anyway, my Legolas is a stock 57, with a 2-degree top tube slope. It has a
threadless steerer, and a color-matched custom Nobilette stem. The color I
went for is called "amethyst smoke". I was going for the greyish purple of
some leaves, succulent plants, and some of the rocks I see on Mount Tam.
The build is going to be a light 1x10 cross racing kind of build. The
target weight is 19.5lbs complete with nothing dumb on it.

Weight starters:

Frame with King headset cups pressed in: 1989g

Fork with crown race, uncut steerer: 917g

Nobilette custom stem (90 deg, 105mm): 189g

[RBW] Re: ROADINI

2018-04-12 Thread William R.
The Paul Racer Medium front was necessary to make the 38s work. Plenty of
clearance. I've been riding it a lot. They are great. Couple more clearance
photos...

I believe the new Dia Comp center pull brake Riv is testing may provide the
same clearance at a lower price point.

[RBW] Re: Seen on My Instagram: My new 57cm Legolas Frameset

2018-04-12 Thread Bill Lindsay
tc asked if a Legolas is easier/cheaper for riv to sell, compared to a
custom.

Yes, the design is totally complete for the Legolas. When I order one,
they just order a 57, and M. Nobilette already knows exactly what that is.
So a Legolas is quite a bit less expensive than a custom. With a custom,
you work with Grant to decide what you are going to do on your bike and
then Grant designs a bike for you. It is not the kind of 'custom' where
you tell Riv exactly the geometry and tubing you want, and they build it.
It's a Grant design for you.

I got to specify several little details, and that's easy. I wanted
clearance for Steilacooms, not 33mm cross-racing tires. That's easy. I'm
running Mini-moto linear-pull brakes so I wanted no rear brake hanger. I
wanted discrete fender attach points and no rack braze ons on the stays or
fork blades. I wanted no pump peg. I chose a head tube decal over a head
badge. Those were 'customized' options. The only tiny geometry tweak is
that the top tube has a TINY bit more slope than normal. 2-degrees instead
of 1.5-degrees.

[RBW] Re: ROADINI

2018-04-12 Thread 'Eamon Nordquist' via RBW Owners Bunch
Wow, it fit 38mm tires, huh? Must be a comfy ride! Clearance looks a bit tight
up front - is it just tight at the brakes, or is it tight at the fork crown as
well?

[RBW] Re: ROADINI

2018-04-12 Thread William R.
Hi Kellie. I'm loving my 57cm Roadini. I agree with Austin's wife: it is
super smooth typical Riv geometry characteristics and certainly not twitchy
at all. Nice and light. As shown, it is about 27lbs, which is about 8lbs
lighter than my Appaloosa. These two bikes are not redundant at all and
have very separate purposes, I'm really enjoying both!

Build list:
48cm Noodles
Shimano Tiagra level levers
90mm Tallux stem
Simplex dt shift levers
Rene Herse crankset 46t/38t
XT RD
Can't remember which front derailleur off the top of my head
SKF 110mm BB
11-34 9-speed cassette
Brooks B-17 saddle
Paul Racer Medium front brake
Shimano Ultegra level rear side pull
Shimano 105 hubs laced to Velocity A23 rims 36h
Not sure which spokes
Compass Barlow Pass 700x38 tires
Neubaums green with clear shellac
Crank Bros. Candy 2 pedals

[RBW] Re: FS: Cranksets, pedals, shifters, derailleur, brakes

Bump! and price drop on these.

2) Shimano FC-MT60 Deore 175mm 110/74 Triple Cranks, 49/37/25 Willow Rings,
Shimano Cartridge BB - $75 shipped CONUS
--This set came off of my all-road Fitz. Crank arms are in good shape, some
of the shine still left. The Willow rings have a few hundred miles on the,
teeth still in great shape. Comes with a 121mm Shimano Cartridge BB (a few
hundred miles on this one).

3) Shimano FC-M550 Deore LX 175mm 110/74 Triple Cranks - $22 shipped CONUS
--I had these on my Cetma cargo bike, but ended up switching to a tandem
Sugino crankset when I put a Stokemonkey Assist on it. The finish on these
is a little dull and the Deore LX logo is rubbing off. I might have some
rings I can throw in for cheap if you need.

5) Shimano PD-A520 SPD Pedals - $25 shipped CONUS
--I switched to flat pedals on the bike these were on. Plenty scuffed up,
but still spin smooth.

6) Shimano Tiagra RD-4601 Long Cage 10-speed - $25 shipped CONUS
--I had this on my rando, but I switched to SRAM 10-speed. This one's
pretty clean and shiny.

7) Controltech Bar Ends - $10 shipped CONUS
--These were an impulse buy at the LBS to see if I like bar ends on my
mountain bike. Turns out I don't.
