Question

2021-03-27 Thread Wim van Helden

Dear all,

I use the Seamonkey program / suite to my full satisfaction. I am
also looking regularly to YouTube via Seamonkey. I am getting an
errormessage in the chat section (right part of the screen) that I
cannot participate or read the chat because I am using an outdated
browser. Do I do something wrong, or is a solution underway?

  Look forward to your reaction,

Programming Question: 8-9-20

2020-08-19 Thread Hugo F Spidalieri Jr

Dear Sea Monkey:

I have been loyal and avid user and advocate of the SeaMonkey client
server ever since Netscape went out of business.

I currently run the SM email on my win10 PRO system using  v.2.53.3.

I recently had to have my entire operating system reinstalled due to a
bad win update and when I reinstalled the SM email app

I lost the function when replying to emails that places the date and
time in the header of the email sent. (ie On 8-9-20 @ 4:01 PM Jon Doe
wrote)...

I had found the option to turn this function on some months ago and now
cannot remember where in the email app it is or how to re-engage it.

Could you please direct and assist me so that I can turn this feature
back on!

Much appreciated and thank you for a GREAT product!

Respectfully,
H Spidalieri

I've done precisely this with Google.  That one clears the display
quirk that's in Google's search bar. For some reason, Google doesn't
like a Firefox UA that shows the name of Firefox-derived project. They
want only stock Firefox. If I remember correctly, PaleMoon has the
same issue as Seamonkey.

Just curious -- are you abbreviating Seamonkey as "SM" in your own use,
or are you just doing that for reference here?

Underneath, what's going on is sites that are checking for certain
things, usually using scripting, but not always. Most tend to look just
for an acceptable Firefox version. For some, having it anywhere in the
UA string is acceptable, but some may be looking in a specific location,
either at the end of the string (which is easier to find), but I suspect
some want to see "Firefox" immediately following the Gecko designation
(and nothing in-between). I haven't used PaleMoon enough to see how its
default UA behaves, where "Gecko" is replaced with "Goanna" (a Gecko
fork), followed by "Firefox", then "PaleMoon". And I haven't interacted
enough with PaleMoon users to know if they have occasional need to do
spoofing.

I noted that user agent sniffing normally is scripting based, because
sites also tend to use the scripting to deliver a warning, often by
redirecting to a full page. I probably don't see as much of that as I
could, because of my liberal use of NoScript. However, there's other
ways of sites blocking access to browsers they don't want to see. In
server configs, there's a file called .htaccess that's used for a
variety of things (especially page redirects), but it's also possible to
use regular expressions to evaluate the presented User Agent string. If
the string is deemed unacceptable, then the connection is simply dropped.

I use this methodology on the page I maintain. Our site gets a lot of
bot-based traffic that shows forged UAs. And a lot of the forging is
sloppy -- a common problem is misspelling, or improper punctuation or
spacing, stuff that would never be found in a valid UA. One that I've
seen a lot of traffic on is one that purports to be "Firefox/40.1".
That version was never valid, and so I drop any connections where I see
that designation. I also drop connections for really old versions of
browsers, because chances are much higher that they're being shown by
bots than than legitimate users.

This is one of the places where I find the ability to do spoofing on the
fly to be really useful. If I'm testing my filters for UA handling,
it's really easy to set a UA string for what I'm filtering for, and then
I can actually test whether my server will accept or reject that
particular string.

With this in mind, it's generally a good idea to not get too creative in
what you put in a UA string. For some sites, a too-unique string might
be something that a site admin decides is evidence of bot activity, and
use that as a reason to drop or refuse your connection. And there's a
few out there that are sensitive enough about tracking and personal
identification issues that they either spoof all the time, or do random
shuffling of UA strings, as a consideration of what ends up in server
logs. I don't know that there's a way of doing that kind of thing in
Seamonkey, but I do recall seeing somewhere that there are people who
may be doing that with other browsers.

That's correct. It's a general setting that covers all of Seamonkey,
including your email. Thus, in the message wrote, there is this header:

 User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; Intel Mac OS X 10.13; rv:61.0)
 Gecko/20100101 Firefox/74.0

Since I have the dispMUA extension installed, the message used to write
this text, that's showing that you were using Firefox to compose your
message. Since I know about spoofing, I know that's what you're doing,
but there may be occasions when you send mail, it might cause an issue
with showing the identity of a browser, rather than a legitimate mail
client.

With that in mind, I tend to prefer doing more granular spoofing in
places that need it rather than doing it globally. I have a strong
liking for PrefBar, and I have nearly a dozen different UAs available
for spoof. Besides getting past sites that don't behave correctly when
they see a Seamonkey UA, I've found a couple other places where spoofing
is really useful.

One is for software distributors that support multiple operating
systems, where they use UA sniffing to determine what system you're
running, and when you download, they'll give you the download that
corresponds to your platform. For non-technical users, that's useful,
in making sure that the correct download is delivered, but for me, I
have an extensive collection of downloads that I use for support
purposes. By using spoofing, I can tell a site that I'm running a Mac,
and get a Mac download, even if I'm using Windows. I also find that
spoofing is useful when testing my own web page, to make sure that the
page handles different UAs correctly.

With PrefBar, I can do on-the-fly changes of what I'm showing to a site,
and then switch back to the default Seamonkey UA when I no longer need
spoofing.

As an example, I have added some new entries where I changed the string
accordingly with host I reach;
general.useragent.override.google.com -- string set to: Mozilla/5.0
(Windows NT 6.1; WOW64; rv:67.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/67.0

I also do spoofing with general.useragent.override for a couple of
financial sites that were complaining about Firefox 52 when I was
running Seamonkey 2.49.x. Since I visit those sites frequently enough,
I don't want to bother with turning spoofing on and off in PrefBar, so
it's worth it to me to do site-specific spoofs. Since I've moved to
Seamonkey 2.53, I'm guessing that those sites are no longer complaining
(at least for now), but since the spoofing that I was using is for the
then-beta of 2.53.1 (which shows Firefox 60), I haven't bothered to
update or remove. I'll probably want to update when 2.53.2 gets out the
door.

If you enter "about:config" in the browser address bar, and, then, after

should see all the preferences which include "useragent" in the preference.

On that screen, do you see listed a preference called

If you do see that preference, in the column labelled "Status", does it
say "default" or "user set"?? If the later, you (or someone at your
computer) have set up a specific useragent to be displayed to a
'seamonkey'.

'www.whatis mybrowser.com' is not 'seamonkey' so your SeaMonkey is
displaying its real useragent.

It is also possible that when you installed Lightning, it reset your
general User Agent string to show SeaMonkey/2.53.1 and then added in the
Lightning/5.8.1

I got the preference from this newsgroup many years ago. It's user
added and set. It was to replace an old preference that the developers
dropped around the time the "advertise Firefox compatibility" thing started.

I had been modifying it along the way. Up until this new (2.53) it was
still fooling web-sites. Or at least it was still working the last time
I checked. I used to be quite active in this group many years ago, but
lost track at some point. I would switch it to whatever to try and get
sites to display.

As to Lightning, I never added that myslef. That happened on it's own.
If it is not stock in 2.53.1 then possibly during one of the betas I was
running.(?) "They" went back and forth on Ligthning between bundled.

Anyway, my question stands, as to whether 2.53 versions no longer
recognize the user added pref general.useragent.extra.seamonkey

I know there was a huge back-end re-write between 2.49 and now so it
would make sense, just looking for input from somebody who knows.

It probably is, and it does toggle mail.strictly_mime.

Is this happening with e-mails you send via a Verizon SMTP server? If
so, here's what I wrote about it a couple months ago[1]:

If this is what I think it is, it should only happen when you use

There was something similar on a thread titled "Invalid Characters"

Suggestion from Nuno Silva on that thread:

The compose window uses monospace font, and the message window uses
proportional font. That is why the columns do not line up. Maybe compose the

If you are formatting your E-mail as HTML, that causes your problem.
There are actually two problems with HTML-formatted E-mails.

One is the fact that not all E-mail applications handle HTML in the same
manner. Even if your recipient also is viewing the message as HTML, his
or her application might not handle tables the same way, especially if
you are using a font that the recipient does not have.

The other problem -- more likely -- is that the recipient is viewing
E-mail as plain text, which fails to use the formatting you created with
HTML.

does the same sort of stuff, and you might find support for it in the
newsgroup mozilla.support.calender on this server.

Give it a go.
You are right -- Sunbird is very, very, very old, and is no longer
supported. But then, I'm also very, very, very old too, but things still
seem to work okay. Wait ... what was that creaking sound?

I had looked through the Mozilla group names but failed to see the
calendar one, so thanks for that! Subscribed, did a search for Sunbird,
and found a thread back in 2012 that discussed precisely my problem. I
simply moved the content of the existing profiles fold out and replaced
it with the old stuff that I have recovered, and the whole think worked
perfectly displaying all the old data. So again, thanks for that tip!

No problem!

As long as there's no man-in-the-middle - yes. see

Some anti-virus products play MITM so they can check your web traffic;
a browser tls check site is

From the sound of it, you should be composing in a word processor,
which is designed with these features plus spell-checking. When you're
done, copy/paste to a text editor like Notepad to remove all the crud,
and then copy/paste from there to your HTML editor for formatting.

You can still do minor revisions in your HTML editor, but realistically
that's not what they're designed for. To work with large volumes of
text, use a tool designed for that.

If your SeaMonkey window fills your monitor screen with a minimal tool
bar at the top, try pressing F11. This toggles between a full-screen

This is called the "Menu Bar."

Either I caused it to disappear through an inadvertent finger-check, or
it disappeared with the last SeaMonkey upgrade.

OS is Windows7 Version 6.1 (Build 7601 Service Pack 1)

SeaMonkey is 2.48 or later, I think -- I don't know how to determine
release/version
other than clicking "Help" and clicking "About
SeaMonkey"... and the line with "Help"in it ain't there anymore!

I first noticed the loss when I attempted doing "Find on this page" --
not having that available is a real handicap.

There are keyboard shortcuts for these, but you can also restore the menu.

For version number (Help | About), you can do Alt-H, A.

For "Find in this page," you can do CTRL-F.

To restore the menu, look along the left edge of the page for a little
speckled rectangle with a little black triangle in it. There should be
several, oriented vertically (taller than they are wide), one alongside
each toolbar. If you see one oriented horizontally (wider than it is
tall), without a toolbar or anything next to it, it's hiding something.
Click it to reveal its contents.

If that doesn't help (you don't see anything that looks like what I
described, or what you revealed isn't what you're looking for), try
Alt-V, W (View | Show/Hide) and you should get a drop-down list of
things to show or hide. Make sure there's a check next to "Menu Bar."
That should reveal the menu, or at least the corresponding speckled
rectangle. If you just get a speckled rectangle, you already know what
to do: click it to reveal its contents.

I have generally stuck to pop3 access in the past, but I am finding
out via imap that e'mail that I thought I had deleted long ago, by
downloading to my machines, still resides on the e'mail servers.

Wondering if I am missing some checkbox which deletes the email from
the servers? I have always assumed the act of downloading my e'mail
removes the copy from cox.net, gmail & outlook... all of my yahoo
accounts work that way.

IMAP synchronises emails on the PC with the server. Downloaded emails
stay on the server. If you delete an email from the PC, it also gets
deleted from the server. If you delete on the server, it will be
deleted from the PC next time it syncs.

POP3 downloads email from the server to the PC. Whether it is left on
the server having done so is optional. See the settings at Edit > Mail
& Newsgroups Account Settings > (select your account) > Server
Settings, in particular "Leave messages on server", "For at
most...days" and "Until I delete them".

GMail is different (as always...) When using POP3, the server ignores
the client's instructions as to whether to delete the email. Instead
you have to log in to and go to GMail's
settings. On the "Forwarding and POP/IMAP" tab is a setting "When
messages are accessed with POP" with options "keep Gmail's copy in the
Inbox", "mark Gmail's copy as read", "archive Gmail's copy" or "delete
Gmail's copy".

Therein lies my dilemma, I never delete non-spam e'mail, but I do move
it from the inbox to my decades of archived mail in the local folders.
It resides on my machine permanently as an interactive diary of sorts...

Only Yahoo seems to be properly configured to allow mail removed from
"Inbox" to be deleted.

Gmail moves copies into three separate imap folders... and I have to go
to Cox cable & Outlook webmail to delete previously moved e'mail
manually...

Gmail allows emails to be given multiple "labels", which it presents as
folders in IMAP, resulting in copies in multiple IMAP folders. All
incoming email appears in "Inbox" (or "Spam") and "All Mail". I'm not
sure what the third one you refer to is?

There are a few settings in Gmail's web interface which might help...

(Gmail) Settings > Labels:

- Untick "Show in IMAP" next to the "All Mail" label
--- Prevents that label from being shown as a folder in IMAP along with
duplicates of all emails.

- I also untick "Show in IMAP" next to the "Important" label
--- Avoids duplicates showing up in that IMAP folder. You might want to
keep this one, depending whether you use the "Important" label, but if
you do you'll need to delete "important" emails from both the Inbox and
Important IMAP folders. Similarly you might want to untick the "Starred"
label if you don't use that.

(Gmail) Settings > Forwarding and POP/IMAP:

- When I mark a message in IMAP as deleted: Auto-Expunge off
--- Avoids Gmail immediately deleting messages if SeaMonkey is set to
mark messages as deleted, so you get the chance to un-delete them before
compacting the folder to actually delete the messages marked as deleted.

- When a message is marked as deleted and expunged from the last visible
IMAP folder: Immediately delete the message forever
--- If SeaMonkey is set to mark messages as deleted, messages marked as
deleted in SeaMonkey (shown strike-through in the thread pane) will
remain in Gmail's until the folder is compacted (expunged) in SeaMonkey,
at which point messages marked as deleted are also deleted from Gmail.
--- If SeaMonkey is set to move deleted messages to the bin, deleted
messages appear in the bin folder in both SeaMonkey and Gmail (Gmail
doesn't immediately delete it at this point, as SeaMonkey has moved the
message, not deleted it). Strangely, deleting the message from
SeaMonkey's bin doesn't seem to delete it from Gmail's bin, but that
seems to be the case regardless of the setting in Gmail and probably
isn't too bad since Gmail automatically deletes messages from the bin
after 30 days.

The SeaMonkey setting to mark messages as deleted or move them to the
bin is at Edit > Mail & Newsgroups Account Settings > (select your
account) > Server Settings > "When I delete a message".

Oh well, just have to go hit the delete button once a month I guess...

I find the above seems to work quite sensibly in Gmail. There are still
a few quirks though. e.g. moving a message from a Gmail IMAP folder to a
local folder in SeaMonkey leaves the message on Gmail's server (visible
if you log in to webmail) but it doesn't show up in the IMAP folder on
SeaMonkey (only in the local folder to which it was moved). If, in
SeaMonkey,

Why would I?

Who says you have to open the message?  Just select it in the message
list and click the button.

If I select a message, it's displayed in the preview pane and marked as
read. To avoid that, I have to first toggle the preview pane off by
clicking the grippy on the boundary. Fortunately, I have the good sense
to block the display of remote images, so if I open a junk message by
mistake, it can't "phone home" using a web beacon.

My display hides the mail toolbar to save space, since I normally use
keyboard shortcuts such as "N" (next unread message), "M" (mark as
read), etc. If I show the mail toolbar, I see the "Junk" and "Mark"
buttons, but I was unaware of their existence since I don't normally
show the toolbar. Hence my joking query.

To keep a message from opening in the preview pane when you select it
just right-click the message and then in the drop down box select Junk
or Not Junk. The selected message will not display in the preview pane
during this operation.

To prevent opening the message when you select it, pull down the View

window to display messages.

I'm well aware of how to disable the preview pane.

Most of the time, I prefer to have the three-pane layout (folder list,
message list, preview pane). It's only very rarely that I need to select
a junk message without opening it, and I usually remember to disable the
preview pane for that moment.

All of which I already said.

"Ignore warning" doesn't train the Junk Mail Control feature. It
basically says, "I know it's junk, but quit nagging me."

In order to train the JMC feature, you have to mark the message as "not
junk."

Message | Mark | As not Junk or SHIFT-J will do it.

After a few of those, SM should take the hint.

I wish to find out what others use for PWM's that are compatible with SM or is
it I need to look
for one which will work with W10 Pro instead?

I have what is included with SM, but I mostly use Saved Password Editor.

I never loose passwords, or anything else, during an upgrade.  But then I never
do an upgrade.  I
copy the new version to a new tree, have it share all the previous data, and if
at some point I
decide I like the new better, I delete the older.

Ray

I use Quick Passwords but it may not work anymore after the major changes that
are coming to SM.
Does anyone know if Quick Passwords will continue to work in SM in the future.

What major changes?

I don't know. I thought SM was switching over to a new release and some add-ons
would no longer work
or is that just for Firefox?

Just Firefox for now.

Re: Password Manager Quick Question - SM 2.49.1 W10 Pro

2017-11-14 Thread Hawker

David - are others having this issue as well?
Sounds like for the OP and myself (I am on Win7 not Win10) The built in
password manager broke on the 2.49 update.
I can go to the password manager and they are all still there, but the
auto complete is broken.

Does the OP also find the passwords are still in the manage stored
passwords interface just not auto completing?

logins with both security and integrity, I must then trust SeaMonkey
to store my passwords.

Doesn't really address the OP's question. He's concerned by several
posts we've seen here about SM forgetting passwords after recent
upgrades. I, too, would be greatly inconvenienced if SM forgot all those
nuisance logins that I entrust to it.

As much as I trust SeaMonkey, I still use a lengthy pass-phrase (not
merely a password) as my master password. I also periodically
change the individual passwords for the Web sites of my financial
accounts and certain other critical Web sites.

As a policy, I don't save logins and passwords for financial
institutions in SM or anywhere else my computer. However, in a separate
file with a nonobvious name and location, I do save fragments or clues
to those logins and passwords along with a slew of other unrelated data.

So for a simple example (this isn't a real case), for one of my banks I
may save the fragment "Yankees," which reminds me to add the fragment
"rule!!" when I enter it in the website. For another example (again, not
a real case), I may save "hIOdnV7QT9A_aJvHnZ2dnUU7" (I grabbed this just
now from your message id) and remember that the login is "hIOdnV7QT9A"
(the first part) and the password is "_aJvHnZ2dnUU7" (the second part).
Nothing in the file mentions the institutions or their websites, so it's
not obvious to anyone else which parts of the mass of data go with what.
And since what is there is incomplete (the rest being saved in wetware),
cracking it won't help without the other part.

There are many ways of saving useful reminders (not complete logins or
passwords) without assuming unreasonable risks.

I have never seen SeaMonkey forget a saved password. I have indeed seen
this problem with Thunderbird. (I do not use SeaMonkey's mail-news
capability.) However, I think the problem in Thunderbird was fixed
several versions ago.

Yes. My active tab is dark blue with white text. If I hover my cursor
over my active tab, however, the tab turns pale blue with black text.
The text is slightly larger than the rest of my user interface text.
Here is my CSS:

/* Font size on tabs */
.tabbrowser-tab
{ font-size: 105% !important }

/* Highlight active tab */
.tabbrowser-tab[selected="true"] > hbox,
.tabbrowser-tab[selected="true"] > .tab-close-button

It looks like you're using a theme other than the default, and the
highlighting might be part of that theme. Make sure your wife's
profile is using the same theme, selected at Tools > Add-ons
Manager > Appearance.

Otherwise, as others have mentioned, it may be that you've customised
the userChrome.css file in your profile to get this effect.

Mark, did you mean that DB should compare Theme settings at
View->Apply Theme??

No, but that does look like another way of doing it.
