Arnie Coro has long wanted to participate but has never managed to get
the logistics sorted out. Perhaps from Cuba to Venezuela might be
easier for him.

2010-02-25 Thread craig.51...@juno.com
Could a window be opened in that downstairs room and a wire be fed out between
the edge of the screen and the window frame(as opposed to poking a hole in the
screen itself), and then reeled back in after the listening is done? How about
a "through-the-glass" coupler similar to those cell / ham / 2-way antennas for
mobile use? We are in a technical hobby here, and there are those amongst us
who know waaay more than me. So we should be able to come up with a solution
that works here. Perhaps scout out the hotel for an alternate entry point near
the lounge room? CRAIG

The last several years that I can recall, none at all. For example, when Al
Johnson brought his new Perseus in to play with (I think that was in '08),
someone had strung a short antenna with a MLB at the end of it (I don't
remember the model number, but I know Universal carries it...) inside the
building. That's hardly an effective antenna. One or two other folks had the E1
and were sharing it between that little antenna and just using the whip. How
can one have a 'Listening Lounge' without some sort of antenna, regardless of
how simple it might be? I know the hotel charges an arm and a leg for folks to
poke holes in the screens, but that can't be very popular with the staff, even
if they understand why they do it.

It's too late to think of this now, I'm sure, but certainly something that
probably should be considered in the future. 73 Mike

There's an official Listening room on the 4th floor. Not sure what the antenna

Unfortunately, like much of NPR's reporting it missed the opportunity to
report important facts--such as amateur radio's global reach and appeal,
its critical importance in emergencies, its ability to circumvent
corporate/government blockage/control of communications, and its many
voice, data, and video modes.

Nobody unfamiliar with with ham radio who heard or read NPR's story
would've learned any of those key facts--which are probably the main
reasons ham radio is becoming more popular. Ironically, that's the main
question NPR's story was asking.

We had some discussion on the increase in the number of amateur radio
operators at the last Fest. Why is a bit of a mystery. Two possible
reasons could be the up tick in the solar cycle attracting fence sitters
or, more darkly, a failure of confidence in public infrastructure. Even
mainstream media have noticed. This article comes from NPR and was
passed along by a friend. -Fred

Ham Radio Growing In The Age Of Twitter
by Matt Sepic

NPR - April 5, 2010

Only a few years ago, blogs listed ham radio alongside 35 mm film and
VHS tape as technologies slated to disappear.

They were wrong.

Nearly 700,000 Americans have ham radio licenses — up 60 percent from
1981, a generation ago. And the number is growing.

Ham radio will never have the sex appeal of the iPhone, but it does have
a certain nerd appeal, says Allen Weiner, an analyst at the technology
research firm Gartner.

"If it creates its own experience, that's really what's key here," he
says. "If it just emulates an experience that you can get online, it's
not going to grow."

Newcomers to ham radio include Helen Schlarman, 89, who has a compact,
two-way radio in her home in suburban St. Louis. She looks up a friend
across town by pushing the talk button, announcing the letters and
numbers of his call sign (W-0-S-J-S), and then announcing her own
(W-0-A-K-I).

Steve Schmitz's voice crackles through Schlarman's radio.

"Hi Helen, how you doing, W-0-S-J-S?" he says, ending his response with
his own call letters.

Many "hams," as they're known, hang postcards from global contacts on
their walls, the way hunters show off deer antlers, but Schlarman's
chats are mostly local. She says this hobby is perfect for an outgoing
person who spends a lot of time inside.

"It's a different community," she says. "There [are] no stereotypes of
age; it's just talking and sharing and enjoying."

Until recently, ham radio was declining as older operators died. Then
the Federal Communications Commission phased out the Morse code test
that many saw as a stumbling block to getting a license. Last year more
than 30,000 new applicants signed up to become ham radio operators,
according to Maria Somma, an official with the American Radio Relay League.

At a ham radio convention near St. Louis, the crowd swapping antenna
parts and other equipment is mostly male, and over 50. But 15-year-old
Jonathan Dunn is attending along with his father. He says Facebook and
texting are fun, but making friends using a $200 radio that doesn't come
with monthly fees is more rewarding.

"With ham radio you can talk to new people, all kinds of ages, races,
and it's just amazing what a little radio can do. Because no matter
where you're at, if you have the right stuff and the right power you can
talk to anyone," he says.

Jonathan's dad, Steve Dunn, says the polite chitchat between ham radio
operators is good for teenagers. "If young people have the opportunity
to communicate with a wide range of people, that instills a certain
amount of confidence in their ability to carry on the lost art of small
talk," he says.

Even the most die-hard hams concede that amateur radio will never be a
mainstream hobby. With smart phones and other devices, people are more
plugged in to the Internet than before. But people are still discovering
the joy of communicating with a technology that's existed for nearly a
century. Copyright 2010

You should inquire if the hotel management will
allow the twenty-year-old tradition of displaying the North American Shortwave
Association banner across the inner court.  Recognizing that there might
be concerns for safety, offer to use 3/16" stainless steel cable instead of the
traditional nylon rope.  Offer to protect the railing with a piece of 4"
ID PVC pipe cut to slip over the railing.  (Be sure that the banner
support cable is perpendicular to the railings and stock up on alligator
clips.) --

Sort of. The new ownership has been renovating and upgrading the
facility with the plan to re-brand it as a Holiday Inn. As everyone
knows, we had to endure a wing under renovation and tramp through
plaster dust and past exposed wiring to have a Hospitality Room.

Working with the new management in 2010 was not a pleasant experience.

Their proposal for us for 2011 would have required us to book Friday
lunch and dinner as banquet meals, or would have required us to
increase registration fees by more than $20 for us to cover additional
charges. Sleeping room rates would have increased as well.

Hello,

Thanks for the information.

The hotel website has a nice plan of the first floor meeting rooms.  The decor
in the picture reminds me of the Kulpsville hotel.

I hope to arrive in the late afternoon.  I am bringing fruit juices for the
Hospitality Room.

I noticed there is a trail a short distance south from the hotel.  It is the
Cross County Trail.

On Friday evening I went down to the California Pizza joint in the mall across
the street. It was the only time I left the building. When I returned to the
hotel I stopped off at the hospitality room for a couple of brews. Upon
packing at midnight Saturday I realized I was missing my jacket. It is brown
with a zipper front. The hotel did not have it in lost and found. Any
information will be appreciated.

Thanks for a great Fest. I also voted to keep it at the Doubletree next time
but wonder if we get 200 attendees because of the 25th anniversary, will the
rooms be large enough to hold the forums?

Thanks Mano -

I had sent a note to the list many months ago envisioning an "HF
Trailer" but never had any volunteers...so we'd love to incorporate
your idea in the plans for 2012.

Not sure, given the reinforced concrete construction, if the wire
strung between balconies would be affected.

Thanks for the input - We'll put it in the "idea jar" - around
September / October I'll leave myself a reminder to follow up with you
on this.

We tend to go dormant from a Fest planning perspective from April
through mid-September, because that's when schedules and plans try to
firm up.

Hey folks -

Three questions for those of you with tablet PCs: I have a colleague
looking to get one for a 17YO and it would be used for both schoolwork
as well as multimedia / social networking. Ease-of-use and reliability
are important.

Question 1: Can external keyboards be easily used with tablets for
typing-centric apps (e.g. word processing / presentation)?

Question 2: Or are tablets really sub-optimal for this task?

Question 3: If tablets are indeed suitable for this, which one would
you recommend, factoring ease of use, cost, and reliability?

Thanks...

Rich, take a look at the HTC VIEW. It supports a bluetooth keyboard in addition
to the on-screen keyboard, you can use a stylus to scribe notes on screen and
it is compatable with apps like "Blackboard" that many schools are now using.
There are Kindle and Nook apps as well so textbooks can be viewed on it. It is
WiFi enabled and can be connected to a cellular network(for a fee) when out of
WiFi range. They are being offered by several carriers, most notably Sprint.
Hope this helps. CRAIG

Re: [Swlfest] "Resurrect Dead:" showing in Philadelphia this week

2011-09-12 Thread craig.51...@juno.com
There may be a simpler explanation for the "tvi" to then tv channel 3. As I
watched the film at this years swl fest, I began to recognize a series of items
that were familiar to me. These included the place that the guy lived, his
general appearence and the reported "buzzing sound" that people in the film
said they heard comming through their tv sets. It was in that time frame,
through a 3rd party, that I sold an old piece of military radio gear called a
PRC-77. It covers the freq range 30-76mhz fm and has a 150z tone generator on
transmit which probably is the source of the buzzing sound. I was told that the
buyer wanted to transmit religous programming on tv channel 2 in New York. The
radio was capable of transmitting on both channels. Channel 3s audio was on
65.75mhz back then. The 3rd party confirmed for me that my suspicions were
correct. So at least that small part of the mystery my be solved. CRAIG

Hmm...did my post about this on Tuesday Sept 6 not make it to the
list? Anyway, on Thursday the (Sundance Award-Winning) documentary
film director Jon Foy asked me to give a short presentation during
the Q&A after the Philly film premier--so I talked a bit about pirate
shortwave broadcasts and brought in an E.F. Johnson Viking
transmitter and matching TVI filter to show the audience. (The
subject of the film was a mysterious individual who reportedly used
such a transmitter on 6250 KHz in the mid 1980's to promulgate their
bizarre message to the world.)

One thing documented in this film is these strange broadcasts were
heard coming through people's TV sets in Philadelphia. The
filmmakers and I have had an ongoing discussion about whether this
was intentional TVI or not. They thought yes, I thought no. But the
night before the film premier and presentation it occurred to me that
the 10th and 13th harmonics of 6250 KHz nicely line up nicely with
the audio carrier frequencies of *both* KYW-CH3 and WPVI-CH6 in
Philadelphia. This seems beyond coincidence to me, so it made for a
good discussion at the Q&A.

The theater was sold out with 350 in attendance, and I told them
about the SWLfest and suggested they check it out the website. At
the reception afterwards several people approached me and asked for
more info, so I'm hoping this film will bring more people into our community.

If you can't come to Philly and see this excellent film on Sept 10,
11, or 12th, it's available on Video On Demand (check the website
below for more info) and should be out on DVD sometime this
winter. It was screened at the IFC theater in New York City last
Friday (Sept 2) and got good reviews in both The New York Times and
Village Voice.

Cheers,

-Ed Cummings

Phillies baseball games are being added to FM 94.1 (WIP-FM, the old
WYSP) as of the coming season. 50 kW Clear channel WPHT (legacy WCAU)
will still air the games as well, but it's one of those "signs of the
times" that AM radio continues to fall out of favor.

I grew up with a transistor radio under my pillow listening to
baseball in the summer in late evenings; nearly all baseball teams
from St. Louis eastwards aired on at least one 50 kW clear channel AM
station. Alas, no longer...Atlanta and Detroit are two teams I can
easily think of that no longer have a 50 kW outlet.

I suppose I could put my iPhone under the pillow and listen using the
MLB Gameday Audio app, but it just ain't the same!

Carl's question:

I do have a question about scanners which I hope to can help me with. I am
looking for a scanner for our local townwatch group that will pickup Philly
Police radio. They have narrow banded their frequency so the scanner I have
now doesn't pick them up. Need one that is not to hard to operate since there
will be people that are not radio knowledgeable using it. The last time I was
at the scanner convention Tony Pazzola from NY had a Uniden "Home Patrol #1",
it looked easy to operate. Can you or anyone of your friend send me in a
direction on make and model of a scanner. I have been on the site "Bearcat

Veteran bargain DX'er Saul Broudy turned me on to
this internal Radio Shack document showing 1784
stores slated to close soon. If one of these
stores is near you, it might pay to check it
out. I agree that some stock is likely to be
sold off wholesale to liquidators, but there'll
still be some pretty deep retail discounts in
stores slated for closing. Apparently the store
inside the Plymouth Meeting Mall has already closed.

"Veteran bargain DX'er Saul Broudy turned me on to this internal Radio Shack
document showing 1784 stores slated to close soon."

The WSJ map is a little easier to read. I learned that the store in my
hometown is slated for closure (Haverhill MA).Nearby ones in Plaistow
NH, Lawrence MA, and one of the two in Salem NH will be spared.
Salem NH has two malls adjacent to each other, and both have RS stores.

"If one of these stores is near you, it might pay to check it out. I agree
that some stock is likely to be sold off wholesale to liquidators, but
there'll still be some pretty deep retail discounts in stores slated for
closing. "

Another thing that is common in retail chain store closings, and I
honestly don't know if this will be the case with Radio Shack - is that
merchandise is actually brought INTO stores - if a store is going out of
business, but has a high enough foot traffic factor, things might be
brought into that store to take advantage of the situation.

But I don't know how RS is planning to do this.

On Monday, I visited some of the Baltimore area stores which are closing. One
clerk was ringing up "Final" sales and apologizing for being on the phone at
the same time with a prospective employer. In the past year, the three stores
where I regularly shop seemed to have younger employees probably under 30 years
of age and a lot of turnover. I'm sure we all did our best to keep Radio Shack
in business over the years.

This is held more or less continuously throughout the coming Winter SWL Fest,
but a specific time is set aside after dinner (on your own) Friday night for a
"formal" (yeah, right, at the Fest?) show and tell. Please fell free to use
this forum ahead of time to "advertise" items you want to sell or buy. It
might help those that are considering hauling something to Plymouth Meeting
whether it's worth their while to do so.

In that regard, I have a wifi radio set-up I am putting up for sale. It
consists of:
Pure Evoke Flow - an FM/DAB/Internet Streaming Receiver
Pure S-1 Matching Stereo Speaker
Pure Model E-1 ChargePak Lithium Ion 3.7 V 8800 mAh Battery for Portable
Operation
While these are used items, they are all in excellent condition. The battery
gives about 6 hours of portable use. The receiver also comes with an AC
adapter for fixed use and to recharge the battery internally within the set.
All with their original boxes and packaging.
Complete Set: $125.

Feel free to contact me here if you are interested.

You are correct, Rob, but PayPal nowadays offers both business and
non-profit accounts that make it simple to avoid intermingling of
funds between personal, non-profit, and business endeavors.

To that end, we established a separate PayPal identify for the Fest,
and provided some basic documentation back to PayPal that it was a
non-profit endeavor, thus avoiding a higher business-rate takeaway.

And this is an event which happens (thankfully!) only once per year.

The word "sloppy", as my colleague Mr. Figliozzi has used, is still
the best word for the situation. It appears to me that G24 wasn't
quite "ready for primetime" when it launched, and didn't appear to
have its contingencies thought through and accounted for, nor did the
enterprise organize itself around sound business accounting practices.

Now it has alienated its audience and created ill will among its
benefactors...certainly not a good way to run a radio station. Or a railroad!

Includes a nod to our favorite hobby...

I spotted one in very nice shape March of last year in midtown
Manhattan, the week after the Fest.

It was brisk enough today in the Philly region to start thinking about
the Fest...

Hi Rich,

Thanks for bringing this up on the list. While most people on this
list probably have broadband internet connectivity with unlimited
data at home and at work, I'm guessing that many of us are
increasingly reading list postings using mobile devices over mobile
networks *without* unlimited data usage.

So in a way, many of us are going back to using a limited
connectivity channel (cellular/PCS mobile networks) that charges
extra for exceeding a set data usage limit. I hate it when that happens!

Personally, I think the best practice for SWLfest list postings of
news articles is to only post the plain text of each news story,
along with the URL to that that website article so readers can choose
whether they want to download all the pictures and graphics and
potentially bandwidth-hogging video ads (blecch!) Fortunately, that
hasn't been a big problem on the SWlfest list.

My practice for list postings has been to first easily copy and paste
graphics-laden news media articles into a text editor (such as
Windows notepad) then copy that plain text into the body of my email
list posting. That's just basic courtesy and good netiquette, but
maybe all SWLfest subscribers aren't aware of that. It only takes a
few seconds of effort, and results in much easier-to-read postings.

In some cases where the info being posted is not on an online server,
a reasonably-sized file attachment is necessary. The file size
limitation for attachments posted here is up for debate. What is it now?

Thanks for doing such a great job administering the SWLfest list for
so many years..

Cheers,

-Ed Cummings

Wouldn't mucking about in the marshlands with
heavy equipment to rip out hundreds of poles and
metal antennae cause far more ecological damage
than just leaving them in place to rot? Who came
up with this dumb idea--a government contractor looking for a nice contract?

I wonder if any hams or pirates ever made use of
the HF antennae after AT&T left. Quite a ground plane!

Many times I listened to WOO and similar AT&T

rdc...@gmail.com Dear North American Shortwave Association: The U.S. Fish &
Wildlife Service proposes a pole removal project in the tidal marshlands of the
Good Luck Point (Ocean Gate) and Manahawkin units of Edwin B. Forsythe National
Wildlife Refuge in Ocean County, New Jersey. The undertaking will contribute to
saltmarsh enhancement funded by the Disaster Relief Appropriations Act of 2013.
The proposal is for hundreds of poles to be removed, in addition to cables,
wires, metal towers, and concrete blocks. The goal of this action is to enhance
coastal marsh habitats by increasing marsh resiliency from impacts of large
storm events and other ecosystem stressors. The poles are part of inactive
shortwave antenna fields associated with AT&T’s
ship-to-shore shortwave communications system, which was in operation at the
sites from the early 1930s until 1999. The wires connecting the antenna poles
were removed by AT&T prior to the creation of the National Wildlife Refuge
units. Good Luck Point in Berkeley Township, Ocean County includes a shortwave
transmitter building and antenna field. The municipality owns the shuttered
building, while the poles of the inactive antenna field are on Refuge land.
Under the call sign WOO, the shortwave facility at Good Luck Point (known as
Ocean Gate) was a renowned transmitting station, which helped broadcast Voice
of America around the globe after 1944 and enabled communication with ships at
sea throughout the twentieth century. The historic property is eligible for
listing in the National Register of Historic Places. The proposed project will
remove approximately 340 wooden poles from the inactive antenna field, along
with several metal antennae. Manahawkin in Stafford Township, Ocean County
includes the WOO companion site, which consists of a shortwave receiving
station and antenna field. Via Manahawkin, shortwave communications from ships
at sea were linked to America’s telephone network from the
1930s until 1999.  The entire Refuge unit is within a conservation easement to
the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, which does not own the building.  The
historic property is eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic
Places. The proposed project will remove approximately 113 wooden poles from
the antenna field.  Several metal antennas will be removed, as well. Because
both of the historic properties represent well-preserved examples of nationally
significant shortwave facilities, they have been determined eligible for
National Register listing. Consequently, the proposed removal of poles from the
antenna fields will cause an adverse effect under Section 106 of the National
Historic Preservation Act. A mitigation program is being developed in
consultation with the New Jersey State Historic Preservation Office. In
accordance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act, the U.S.
Fish and Wildlife Service seeks public comment on the anticipated adverse
effect. The public is invited to submit comments concerning the
project’s effects on the historic properties to
northeas...@fws.gov . The public comment period ends on November 15, 2015.

Hello,

I am looking for feedback about the Listening Lounge. I am also
interested in what stations you were able to receive.

I may print out some basic instructions so people can sit down and
operate the radios better. Headphones may be useful to cut down
background noise.

The Wellbrook signal output is 'hot'. I have problems with several
nearby AM stations overloading some receivers. The situation is similar
at the Fest site with AM station towers a short distance away. I use a
MW Band-Reject Filter, which also worked at the Fest site. The noise
level seemed reasonable. I did not try for any DX, but there did seem to
be a good selection of stations on. There was Caribbean Beacon, a couple
of religious stations, and a couple of South Americans. In the Evening
there were a several stations on the 60M Band.

imagined. Since there was no television at that time, shortwave listening was a
popular past time and being a nation of immigrants we listened to broadcasts

Hi Dave,

Would a portable radio with a large touchscreen in lieu of tactile
knobs and switches pose major problems for a blind
user? Coincidentally, I'm in communication with PantronX Titus II
product developer Mike Stone about doing a talk about and demo of
this exciting new radio at the 25th annual SWLfest. Stay tuned!

And it appears to be for real this time. I can't say I blame them...
continue with somewhat inferior "AM" Signals or build out more FM
 transmitters?

 ABC Exits Shortwave Radio Transmission

 06 December 2016

The ABC will end its shortwave transmission service in the Northern
Territory and to international audiences from 31 January 2017.

The move is in line with the national broadcaster’s commitment to
dispense with outdated technology and to expand its digital content
offerings including DAB+ digital radio, online and mobile services,
together with FM services for international audiences.

The majority of ABC audiences in the Northern Territory currently
access ABC services via AM and FM and all ABC radio and digital radio
services are available on the VAST satellite service.

ABC International’s shortwave services currently broadcast to PNG
and
the Pacific. Savings realised through decommissioning this service
will be reinvested in a more robust FM transmitter network and an
expanded content offering for the region that will include English and
 in-language audio content.

Michael Mason, ABC’s Director of Radio said, “While
shortwave
technology has served audiences well for many decades, it is now
nearly a century old and serves a very limited audience. The ABC is
seeking efficiencies and will instead service this audience through
 modern technology.

The ABC, working alongside SBS, is planning to extend its digital
radio services in Darwin and Hobart, and to make permanent its current
digital radio trial in Canberra. Extending DAB+ into the nation’s
eight capital cities will ensure ABC digital radio services can reach
an additional 700,000 people, increasing the overall reach of ABC
digital radio to 60% of the Australian population.

ABC Radio is also investigating transmission improvements to address
reception gaps in the existing five DAB+ markets. It aims to ensure a
resilient DAB+ service in every capital city, with enhanced bitrates
 and infill where necessary.

“Extending our DAB+ offer will allow audiences in every capital
city
in Australia equal access to our digital radio offering, as well as
representing an ongoing broadcast cost saving owing to lower
 transmission costs, added Michael Mason.

ABC International’s Chief Executive Officer Lynley Marshall said
the
reinvestment from closing international shortwave services would
maximise the ABC’s broadcast capabilities in the region.

“In considering how best to serve our Pacific regional audiences
into
the future we will move away from the legacy of shortwave radio
distribution, Ms Marshall said. “An ever-growing number
of people in
the region now have access to mobile phones with FM receivers and the
ABC will redirect funds towards an extended content offering and a
robust FM distribution network to better serve audiences into the
 future.

Once international shortwave ceases transmission, international
listeners can continue to access  ABC International services via:

 ·         the web stream at:
 http://www.radioaustralia.net.au/international/listen

 ·         in-country FM transmitters: see Radio Australia’s
‘Ways to
 Listen’ at:
http://www.radioaustralia.net.au/international/radio/waystolisten/fiji

 ·         the Australia Plus expats app (available in both iOS and
Android)

 ·         partner websites and apps such as www.tunein.com  and
www.vtuner.com.

Audiences can access further information via the reception advice line
1300 139 994, online at abc.net.au/shortwave, or via ABC Local Radio
 (Darwin and Alice Springs).

Hi Everyone,

Before I put these two antique Zenith radio/phonographs up on
Freecycle.com for a friend, I thought I'd offer them here to any
SWLfest folks who might be interested.

A very old physician's estate was liquidated and she owned two
beautiful Zenith entertainment centers--one shortwave with the Rotor
Wavemagnet antenna, and the other mediumwave only--and both have
Zenith phonographs. I told my friend who inherited these units to
not apply power to them lest the caps explode, so they're ready for
reconditioning.

The SWLfest mailing list won't allow large image attachments, but if
anyone on the list in the Philly area is seriously interested, I can
email you pictures and facilitate your acquiring these units for free.

The present owner is pregnant and due today(!) and needs more room in
her small house, so she's looking to find a good home for these
classic Zenith radio/phonos. They're much too nice to discard as junk.

Please email me off-list if you're seriously interested in taking
both of these units, which appear to have been well cared for.

Thanks much,

-Ed Cummings

Ironic timing on this, as it comes close to the 5-year anniversary of Radio
Canada International's disappearance from shortwave. Perhaps the pitch that
people could make who want to send along a comment about this, particularly
Canadians, would be to focus on the disappearance of Canada from the
international radio bands. After all, Canada is the place where radio got
started. The first experimental radio station XWA in Montreal; Reginald
Fessenden's first voice broadcast using radio; Newfoundland's Signal Hill, etc.
Canada has a rich history in radio. Now Canada is nothing more than a fading
memory on the international radio bands. It bothers me every time I receive the
latest Glenn Hauser DX Listening Digest report and I immediately go through the
alphabetical listing to "C", to see if there just might be any radio news from
Canada. It's sad to see just the occasional mentions of CHU Time signal
station, or Canadian weather or military transmissions. But, even more
disturbing is to see items like this about CKZN or the recent closure of the
CBC West Coast shortwave transmitter. Why not now on the 150th anniversary of
Canada, to voice our concern and displeasure with the practical elimination of
Canada from the international broadcasting scene. Let's try to hold on to one
last piece of a shortwave voice from Canada by at least making sure that
something like CKZN is still there. Sheldon HarveyRadio

I got an email this afternoon saying that they "just brought the
suitcase to a local UPS place and had them see if they could box it and
send it ASAP to New York." Which does sound good, but the email didn't
mention if it had actually been shipped from Germany yet. I asked her to
assure me that everything was still intact. Haven't heard back yet. But
I don't feel inclined to send back this suitcase I ended up with
(luckily I only have to send it to Philly and not to Germany) until I
get the tracking number for mine, and then confirm it.

Sorry I didn't make it to the fest.  Re emergency power, I have been buying
APC UPS units since 1987. (I was introduced to them through work, installing
them on 50-odd PC computer installations in all types of state facilities
scattered in all counties.) I've used them on my telephone BBS and PCs over the
years and find the APC brand extraordinarily durable and reliable. Now that I
don't need a (or want) desktop PC any more, I just have two units. I have a
small one to keep a radio from losing its preset memories if the power blips
and outages of ~2 hours and a larger 1000VA unit to keep the Comcast router and
a VZW range extender on line. The March 7 snow storm brought down ~12 trees
(some on the house) and we lost power for ~12 hours. The UPS kept us on line
for ~9 hours. The APC units are now sold by Schneider Electric
(http://www.apc.com/us/en/) and readily available from outlets like Staples. My
older unit is now known as the BR1000G (1000VA); the BR1500G (1500VA) wasn't
available then. After ~6 years I replaced the battery in the 1000VA for about
40% of the cost of the new unit. It included overnight delivery to here, and a
free return box for the old battery. For the smartphone and tablets, I have
Morphie rechargeable batteries that will reup the charges several times over.
Batteries for a couple of headlamps, the SONY SW-7600GR and another portable
radio complete my needs. I didn't mean to make this to read as a commercial,
but the point is a decent-size UPS can protect against brownouts, power surges
(think lightning strikes) and power losses.

Long story short = couple had two generators running IN THE HOUSE.
Apparently there was no CO (carbon monoxide) alarm active there.

Re: [Swlfest] Data Breaches

Consider all of the statements below carefully when you submit some spit to
Ancestry.com or any other genealogy site. What happens to all those DNA test
results in a database somewhere? Very nice of them to charge you a fee for
collecting your DNA and researching your family history but who else has access
to your DNA profile? How long do you think it will be before a decades old cold
case is solved as a result of data "obtained" from one of these DNA databases.A
friend of mine "limits" the amount and accuracy of any data he uses on social
media sites. This helps keep the "creeps" away.CRAIG

Dan, thanks for facilitating an alternative to Facebook for the SWLfest group.
Personally, I think choosing between the social networking platforms Facebook
and Google+ is like choosing between the devil and the deep blue sea (of data.)

I never established a Facebook account because I never trusted its founder and
CEO Mark Zuckerberg--who once wrote that people who entrusted their personal
data to his social networking platform are "Dumb fucks."
https://www.esquire.com/uk/latest-news/a19490586/mark-zuckerberg-called-people-who-handed-over-their-data-dumb-f/

Seven years ago Wikileaks Founder Julian Assange (who I dislike personally)
was interviewed by RT and quoted saying, "Facebook in particular is the most
appalling spying machine that has ever been invented." He said, "Here we have
the world's most comprehensive database about people, their relationships,
their names, their addresses, their locations and the communications with each
other, their relatives, all sitting within the United States, all accessible to
U.S. intelligence. Facebook, Google, Yahoo -- all these major U.S.
organizations have built-in interfaces for U.S. intelligence. It's not a matter
of serving a subpoena. They have an interface that they have developed for U.S.
intelligence to use."
https://www.theatlantic.com/technology/archive/2011/05/wikileaks-assange-facebook-is-appalling-spying-machine/238225/

Frankly, I don't trust Alphabet (Google+) much more, so I never established a
Google+ account, either. They have similar-data sharing arrangements with
demonstrably untrustworthy entities, and market forces compel these
corporations to exploit users' personal data because they have a legal mandate
to maximize profits for shareholders. People can choose to decline these
corporations' onerous Terms of Service--which frequently change and aren't
honored anyway.

I prefer using this SWLfest mailing list and email to exchange info with my
fellow SWLfesters. It's much safer ;-)

that. A customer of mine just went through an FCC audit for that. Seems a lot
of the hotels are owned by foreigners who do not qualify for an FCC license
under the alien ownership rules. They will buy an existing property with its
license and only find out when they go to renew it that they do not qualify.
FYI...

Doubletree Freqs as listed on FCC.Gov as WPSH816 are:

1. 451.625 Mhz Simplex
2. 462.425 Mhz Simplex
3. 463.900 Mhz Simplex
3. 452.8875 Mhz Repeater out, Appears to be licensed Simplex
4. 457.8875 Mhz Repeater In, Appears to be licensed as Simplex

Also note, Their licensed expired May 2011 but in all probability are still
being used unless they went to off-the-shelf FRS or GMRS. There appears to not
be an FRN associated with the license. I'm going to bring my Scout near-field
frequency counter.

http://thirdpartyoffers.juno.com/TGL3141/5c774eb490a9a4eb24984st04vucLast year we used 146.55 MHz FM and it worked out nicely. I made quite
a few contacts there.
As far as DMR...you could program in 441.000 MHz, TG 99, TS 1 CC1 and
use simplex since you're all in the same place! That is one of the
recommended DMR simplex frequencies.
http://www.va3xpr.net/dmr-simplex-frequencies/
Tom, while I know that TG 31360 is the best for you because you already
have it programmed in, I'm not sure that all the folks who use Tri
State during their daily commutes would be too interested in SWL Fest
chat about Pancho and purple paper for 3 days typing up "their"
TG. But that is just my opinion.
I've setup a D-Star callsign routing group which Festers are free to
use. It is live now and it is called SWLFEST. If you are bringing
your Zumspot/Jumbospot etc it can already do callsign routing. Replace
the CQCQCQ that is usually in the UR Call field with "SWLFEST" and it
will just work. To terminate use "SWLFESTT". I'll leave it up through
the end of next week, but maybe it will stick around if I see it
getting some use. For more on Smart Routing Groups see
http://www.k2dls.net/blog/2019/02/19/adventures-in-callsign-routing/.

We will not be able to join the Fest this year because of a conflict
with other interesting plans. But here's wishing for a good gathering
of the radio active from me and Tina.

was not getting better. She missed last years fest because I had cancer but
was determined to get there this year. I stopped to see her on the way home
from the fest and gave her this years fest shirt and she got to see this years

last time I was able to see her until she wound up in hospice. She was only in

Sad indeed. We can honor the memory of our late friends in the SWLfest
community by getting newer (and perhaps younger) acquaintances to come to
future SWLfests. The SWLfest community isn't sustainable unless we do this.
Over the past several years I've brought new people to every SWLfest. We can
all try to do the same, and we'll be richer for it. Plus, our friends will
appreciate our welcoming them into this amazing community. -Ed Cummings At

I am going to miss his antics at the banquet. The goggles with the windshield

and of course the scanner scum in their tin foil hats. Her eye roll is
deafening. Any way he will sorely missed.CRAIG

Subject: [Swlfest] George Zeller RIP

A couple of notes about George…

I always looked forward to reading his e-mails. There was a certain
“Jean Shepherd-like air to them. They would start with
the topic at hand, but then meander all over the place. If the subject was
radio-related, they would start there but maybe then make some reference to a
political or economic matter or a story bout a community like Intercourse, PA
or Tomatotown, OH that seemed to have nothing to do with radio. If the
subject, as it often could be, was Ohio’s economic situation, you
could count on a reference to our DXing world, its personalities, maybe a piece
of equipment or some radio history — again seemingly not at all
germane to the original topic.

But, like Mr. Shepherd, all was and always would be tied up nice and neatly
with the last sentence or two. How he got there, I never knew. But in the end
it always made sense (especially to George) and never failed to entertain.

My second remembrance is as a privileged part of his “act
as master of ceremonies at the Winterfest raffle and other radio-related
festivities. The cheesehead, the googles, the little Pancho doll, the Barto
Bag, the Barto Box — all of it developed over time, like the act
of most great stand-up comedians. But a little note about the goggles: George
could see very little through them. As Rich, Alan and I would carry up prizes
and the prize winning tickets to George, we usually had to tell him what he had
and whose name—or number or ham call sign-- was on the ticket.
And then it was off to the races — usually like the Marx
Brothers’ day at the races full of non-sequiturs, inside jokes
(which we all were a part of) and various foolishness. But the goggles were
an integral part of the act and they were not coming off until the last prize
was awarded. At least when they worked, he got sort of a head massage out of
them.

I came to understand over time that George possessed a certain amount of stage
fright or at least some serious misgivings about being an MC. Yet,
you’d never know it to watch him both metaphorically waltz
magnificently and then trip over his own feet — sometimes
simultaneously and always on purpose.

George was an immensely intelligent man who was always willing to play the fool
if he could entertain his friends. Despite those misgivings about being an MC
— he seemed so unnerved at times that he was almost to the point
of exhaustion by the end — he never let us down when we asked. He
could talk passionately about economics using terms and discussing theories
that only the most learned could understand and then perform slapstick comedy a
few seconds later.

We’re all going to badly miss George. I know I am. I can picture
him explaining the Ohio economic situation, using DXing terms, with the
Almighty, who will just give him a free pass.

Date: Wed, 29 Dec 2021 21:04:49 -0500

As you may have already learned, the 35th Winter SWL Fest will be virtual again
this time using the ZOOM platform. Dates are March 4-5, 2022 and the schedule
will track last year’s. (For reference, last year’s
schedule remains in place on the Fest web site: swlfest.com )

Last year’s event went very well, if the reactions we received
were any indication. While we wish we could be all back together in some
eating, drinking and sleeping establishment, we think you’ll agree
from just watching what’s going on around us that such an
eventuality is just not prudent or possible this time. But hope for the future
springs eternal!

The program, while somewhat truncated from the in-person version, is coming
together nicely. But we still have a couple of slots open and therefore
cordially invite you to step up and offer a suggestion and your services. The
Fest forums are the centerpiece of the event where knowledgeable presenters
conduct sessions on radio-related (SW, MW, amateur, LW, etc.) matters during
which they share their expertise with and enthusiasm over a favorite topic or
activity. Doing this over the ZOOM platform will truly give you a worldwide
audience — and open this opportunity to potential presenters
worldwide — if last year’s attendance and program are
any indication.

If you wish to be a part of the 35th Winter SWL Fest - Virtual Version by
presenting a forum, please contact me — John Figliozzi
— at the e-mail address below and pitch your topic.
We’d like to have these in hand by January 10, 2022 and will
return an answer to your proposal by January 15, 2022.

Thanks for reading this. Responding to me, John Figliozzi,
jfiglio1(at)nycap(dot)rr(dot)com).

73s, 88s and best regards,

The 35th Winter SWL Festmeisters

In my travels abroad I have observed that even inexpensive "boom boxes" have at
least one short-wave band. Knowing where to tune is a horse of a different
color. During WWII they dropped leaflets with such info.

Interesting segment on the historic benefit of shortwave broadcasting to tyrant
ruled areas but how relevant is it today when democratic governments stopped
using shortwave as a communications device on a regular basis? Who in the
Ukrainian world or Russia knows where to tune in the shortwave spectrum for
such new broadcasting activities?
 Maybe too little too late?

Thank you to all who participated in this 35th annual NASWA Winter SWL Fest,
whether by helping us organize and manage the event, serving as a presenter of
a Fest forum or by registering, attending and being actively involved in Fest
activities.

Rich and I can construct the “skeleton, if you will, of
the Fest — its overall structure. But it is all of you that
provide the “meat and bones — the true
essence of the what the Fest is. You have been the key to its continued
success for over a third of a century now. And you are the reason
— the only reason — it will continue on to another
year. Only, hopefully next year, it will take place as both an in-person as
well as an online event if circumstances permit.

So, thank you once again, stay in touch, and have a very good and most healthy
year.

I agree. Anybody else?BTW: there was a minor news item about a guy who bought a
bunch, like 6000, tiny portable shortwave sets and is shipping them to Ukraine,
via a back door to be distributed free. Not DRM, but certainly a start in the
right direction. Since they include MW and FM they might actually get some use
after the crisis subsides. Anybody remember the Connelrad stations in the
1950's and '60's? A thumbs up to the first person who can give the correct
frequencies for the Connelrad stations!CRAIG

Tom, thanks for sharing this article by two folks we know in our SWLfest
community.

The dearth of shortwave broadcasts to shortwave receivers seems like a
chicken-or-egg problem to me. If there was a good selection of good content
broadcast on shortwave around the world (like there used to be) then more
people would get shortwave radios to hear it (like they used to do before the
content dried up due to most governments deciding the internet was the shiny
new way to reach their target audiences around the globe.)

This is a problem that DRM has been running into. Without content, there's no
market to consume it, and there's no market for HF/MW/FM DRM receivers, and no
financial incentive for their manufacture. HF DRM transmitters and exciters
are readily available from Nautel and others, and HF DRM receiver manufacturers
have ready-to-go designs and production facilities to make lots of radios for
anyone who comes to them with a check.

If just some of the tens of millions of U.S. taxpayer Dollars being squandered
on some USAGM contractors were instead spent on 'seed money' for the production
of DRM broadcasts and hundreds of thousands of low-cost portable HF/MW/FM DRM
receivers for free distribution in target audience areas, that might jump-start
HF DRM, which has impressive potential for conveying digital information around
the world without all-too-easy internet censorship. Somebody has to take the
lead on this.

I'd rather see a tiny fraction of my tax dollars spent on such an initiative
than on even a small fraction of the many Billions spent on waste, fraud, and
abuse...

Does anyone agree with me on this?

Your half right. There were indeed 2 triangles within a circle, the civil
defense logo, at 640khz & 1240khz on all MW sets from about 1950 up to the late
1970's +/-. My 1971 Chevy Nova had them. But my Dad's 1983 Ford Escort? Not so
much.

Sorry for the short notice on this, I found out late last evening. It is with
some sadness that I share the passing of Jim Fisher AJ3DI. He passed away this
past week at age 58. He was a frequent attendee at the SWL-Fest. He was
instrumental in bringing young people into this wonderful radio hobby of ours.
His personality often entered the room before he did. He was a big fan of SDR
