Re: [OSM-talk-be] Article Agoria about free public data in Belgium
I need some help on the osm.org website usage. Can I get a copy of the map on osm webpage with printscreen key? After that, I am planning the modify the image a little bit and distribute it in a mobile app. Copyright messages will be still there under the image. Could this be a legal problem? Hi I have been following the project for some time (at leadt one year) and contributed a lot of data for the Brazilian operator ViVo. What I miss with the project is the ability to combine gpx tracking (with upload to osm) with gathering of cellular data, a clean background operation (currently it sometimes stops in background), and an iPhone/iPad app. Would love if the data could be displayed in some way, for example as a layover. Also, it should be possible to run the openBmap Android app in the background while recording OSM traces. Being able to contribute data to two open data projects at once seems pretty neat to me! There are other databases (such as wigle.net) out there aiming to collect similar data via crowdsourcing, only to use the data for commercial purposes, which are getting more data contributions at the moment! :( I suspect this is because the tools and output are better. And I think people have debated integrating the data into OSM. I think this is impossible because triangulation between different observations over time is needed, even if it was desirable (which I'm not sure it is). Jochen This is very interesting more particulary in areas of the world were we do not recognize the alphabets. I tried it in Syria were default names are in arabic. If there is a correspondance for the language I select it is ok. Otherwise, the default name is kept. And there are many areas around the world were we are analphabets not knowing the characters. This brings the concept of languages proximity and establishing a priority in selecting language to show when there is no name for your selected language. Cool stuff! A while back I sketched out some ideas for something quite similar. Its v1 would have been along these lines with transparent PNGs. But v2 would have sent text labels as a JSON structure containing text plus xy or latlong positions, for rendering on the client. This way you can make separate decisions about text quality and map quality, potentially serving very compressed JPEG maps, and you get very quick rendering of placenames, they'd render before the tiles and you could potentially use only the labels, no tiles, where bandwidth was expensive — and you get quick client-side language changes. With the high frequency text components removed from map tiles, you can get away with much more aggresive compression. I'd love to turn down the quality of Retina map tiles when roaming! I was recently reminded of the benefits of separating text foreground (high freq, so compresses poorly) and image background (low freq, so compresses well) by examining the images embedded in some PDFs of scanned books at archive.org. I think they must have been converted from master files compressed for DjVu, where this separation is normal. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DjVu#Compression - L On 30 Nov 2012, at 14:34, Jochen Topf joc...@remote.org wrote: Hi! I think they must have been converted from master files compressed for DjVu, where this separation is normal. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DjVu#Compression - L On 30 Nov 2012, at 14:34, Jochen Topf joc...@remote.org wrote: Hi! [OSM-talk] Multilingual map even more flexible...
Hi! I have added some more flexibility to the map at http://mlm.jochentopf.com/ You now have to explicitly tell it when you want to fall back to the name tag. Use the underscore (_) to do this. For instance with fr you'll only get the name:fr tag. With fr,_ you'll get name:fr and, if that doesn't exist name. You can now have several languages in one label, for something like München (Munich) you set it to de|en, ie. use the vertical bar between lines. The second line will appear in parentheses. You can combine all of this, for instance as fr,en|_. Of course this isn't perfect. You can get empty parentheses for instance. But hey, it's nice to play around with. Thanks for your reply Martin, I was aware of key:entrance but building:part was new to me so thanks for letting me know about that one. In regards to the following, can you please explain a little more about _how_ to map these. For example, I understand 1a but what nodes/ways/closed ways are you suggesting tagging in 1b and 2a? 1a) a node for the shop floating inside the building 1b) like 1a but part of the outline 2a) a multipolygon with the building as outer 2b) an explicit polygon overlapping with the building Sounds like a building with 2 shops would best be mapped as 3 closed ways - 1 for the building, and 2 inside the building that give the position of the shop and are tagged with amenity=*, name=*, addr (and optionaly building:part=yes). These 2 inner closed ways are likely to share boundaries with the builiding closed way and with each other. Would you tend to agree? For single occupancy buildings I suggested tagging the building as amenity=*, etc as the entrance node on the building can be easily matched with these. it is better to distinguish the building from the occupancy to avoid confusions to which entity the tags belong. There can be ambiguity e.g. in name, operator, start_date, description, wikipedia, and others. You can overcome this by splitting them into logic entities. If you say that the building is a polygon (or mp relation), we get basically these options for the shop: 1a) a node for the shop floating inside the building 1b) like 1a but part of the outline 2a) a multipolygon with the building as outer 2b) an explicit polygon overlapping with the building 3) a relation that somehow says what is in this building current consense seems to be 1a) 2a) and 2b) but some people also do 1b) 1b) has the disadvantage that the shop is inside the building but with this way of mapping it is in between outdoors and inside. a shop has always some extent, so I'd consider 1a) preliminary (it would be better to have the area to see how big it is etc.) 2a) doesn't duplicate geometry but it might break often (due to missing editor support in some editors) 2b) creates redundant geometry (overlapping way) 3) either doesn't tell you much about the extent or it will be very similar to 2a, and their might be other problems as well (e.g. also missing editor support at the moment) But what about a building with multiple occupants and entrances. For example 2 shops in one building. entrances can be mapped with the key entrance http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Key:entrance One option is to tag the building with building=yes and then add the amenity tags to individual nodes, but then how would door to door routing work? first you'd need to make sure the doors are mapped ;-) An alternative is to just split the building in to 2 areas (but technically its 1 building). Can we use some form of indoor mapping (e.g. room=yes, amenity=*)? there is building:part (for parts of a building obviously), but also with one big building there is no problem with putting several amenity-polygons inside. If there is 1 building in the real world we should also have one object in OSM which says this is one building (i.e. a polygon or multipolygon with building=*), so bascially you would need 3 polygons to map a building with 2 POIs in it. You don't need a room-concept to map the extent of a POI, but there is one ;-) http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Proposed_features/indoor cheers, Martin ___ talk mailing list talk@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk

I would use 1a or 2a in the case that the outline of the POI is the same as the building outline. In 2a) you make a relation, type multipolygon, and add tags for the poi to this (name, amenity, etc.), then you add the way that delimits the POI (i.e. a closed way, the building polygon) with the role outer to the relation. Sounds like a building with 2 shops would best be mapped as 3 closed ways - 1 for the building, and 2 inside the building that give the position of the shop and are tagged with amenity=*, name=*, addr (and optionaly building:part=yes). The proposed indoor mapping conventions address this issue, as well as how to handle the resulting overlapping ways. There unfortunately isn't yet consensus and there hasn't been as much attention to this area from the larger OSM community as I would like. I think this example, mapping out units in a building, is a compelling use case for indoor maps. Re: [talk-au] Historical rail lines
Abandoned makes it sounds like there are tracks in place for the length of the line, just no trains running on it. But that's not the case - in the 4km the line used to run on there are 11 remaining artifacts, the largest being a station building (old North Carlton station), the smallest being a single 4 metre track section in Edinburgh gardens, or the one remaining concrete pylon base. They are the vestigial traces that need to be mapped. As for the rest, it's a mostly a park now with a bike track along it (the bits that aren't are houses) ... and that's what it should be mapped as. Hi!

Workwise, we kept the wheels spinning on the Kerala mapping project http://groundtruth.in/2012/11/24/chalakudy-and-river-basin-open-data/ And had just a little talk about mapping with Tibetan exile community in Dharmashala, maybe something there Also, randomly met one of the attendees from the Cartonama workshop at the amazing observatory in Jaipur :) Otherwise, have continued talking w/ http://www.transparentchennai.com/ about integrating OSM in their workflow, but probably really need someone to visit for that to happen.
Just follow the tagging schema from an existing way that is on a gritting route maintenance=gritting, gritting=priority_1, 2 or 3 -if none is indicated in the data set to priority_1, gritting_route_ref= x (if Dudley data has these) gritting_operator=Dudley MBC. There is no schedule for updates we just request these when we have work to do. If you're using JOSM you can set some preferences so that gritted routes are highlighted which is the best way to see your progress(but I've forgotten how I set these up - Andy R can you help?) Anything else just ask and good luck! [Talk-gb-westmidlands] Heritage Map -URGENT
Hi everyone Panic mode! I'm a bit confused about urls from mapbox. The one I sent out before had a https:// header and when I link to it it goes to my mapbox homepage complete with editing rights. Is this what you're seeing? You should see a homepage icon in the top right with my name against it if this is the case. As I'm always logging in it might be picking up something from my local cache which you're not seeing and you're being redirected accordingly in a secure manner. Re: [Talk-ca] Montreal: Autoroute 30 opening soon
Harald The ministry of transport indicate that it is all the west section from Vaudreuil-Dorion to Chateauguay (35km) that will open in december. Exact day is not given. see http://www.mtq.gouv.qc.ca/portal/page/portal/grands_projets/trouver_grand_projet/parachevement_a30 I propose that first use the actual trace and simply modify the tag the day of opening. When somebody of the area will have a new trace, he should be able to modify if necessary. There will be new exit numbers at the opening for 140 km. I will contact the MTQ for info. The A540 will be part of 30 with new numbers.
English follow. -- Has Harald said, we are looking for mappers around Chateauguay, Valleyfield and Vaudreuil to revise the highway 30. Re: [Talk-ca] City of Waterloo Open Data codefest Saturday
I only found their reference to the code fest in March[1], do they have their license published for review? I know that I keep beating this drum, but I really wish that governments would stop trying to write their own open data licenses (even by modifying relatively benign licenses) and JUST USE A VETTED LICENSE WRITTEN AND MAINTAINED BY PROFESSIONALS[2]. The only thing that governments do, by writing their own licenses, is punish those who care enough about open data licenses to actually read them and attempt to use them responsibly.
