Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] piCoPlayer = Squeezelite on Microcore linux. .An embedded OS in RAM with Squeezelite
Hi, I'm brand new to the picoplayer. It's up and running, but I can only connect wirelessly to unsecured wireless networks. I have 3 wireless routers in my home all use the same WEP key, but obviously different SSID's. If security is open, the raspberrypicoplayer connects fine. Otherwise it can't connect. I'm using putty to access the raspberrypi. Any help would be appreciated. Howard Sorry, using a LB-Link wireless USB Adapter Can I go home now? Dan Hi Dan, So I got a little curious and tried moving my RPI around the house and outside at the end of my pool. I connected it to my Xfinity router and my Trendnet, both on the first floor of my home, but at different ends. For some reason when I tried to switch from any other SSID to XFINITY, I had to reboot the RPI. I coud switch from any other SSID including XFINITYWIFI, but not XFINITY. Anyway, below are the results I got. Just to give you an idea, I live in a 2300 sq ft Colonial style home. It's probably 34 linear feet from the xfinity router to the floor below where the RPI was for the diagonal test. I have no idea what the angle is to calculate the footage. There are 3 wireless routers in my house and anywhere from 5 to 15 wireless devices running at any time and lots of other RI from lots of sources. I know this isn't very technical, but it may give you an idea if the LB-Link BL-LW05-AR5 will work for you. Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] Perfect music companion for trip to the cabin
Sounds like a solid plan. As a matter of fact I had a pair of Audio Engine A5's and used to haul them outside. I wasn't all that thrilled with their indoor performance and liked the Radio outside just as well. Probably because around my pool isn't a great place to use stereo. I just need decent tone and volume. I did build a RPI/Touch/HiFiBerry compo and am not happy with that either. I like everything but the tone with whatever speakers I've paired it with. I know I sound terribly picky at this point. My goal is a small self contained unit. The Radio is perfect. Even better with the battery pack. Recently I tired a large BT speaker (Not using BT) a pi and a Anker battery. Worked good, but the fidelity lacked and the volume was insufficient. It's not a huge area, but there is a stone wall, lots of trees and it's on a slope. It sucks up sound. For now I will probably take the Boom out there. I have power available in a couple of good spots. I just hate to take it outside constantly. Do the A5+ sound like the old A5 models? Know of a good single cabinet powered speaker solution that has the balanced sound of the Boom. That's what I'd really like. Just came back from a few days in West Virginia. I took my SB Boom and an RPI running PiCorePlayer 3.5 and a 250GB thumb drive with 8000 flac files. I used the AP Mode feature and had the best portable music player I have ever experienced. What a pleasure. I am going to be so depressed when my Boom goes the way of my SB Radio. I have yet to find any type of replacement with as much fidelity and volume in such a small package. I carry the RPI in my car, plugged in to the Aux input and control it with my phone. great sound and easily pulled out and set up in a hotel room or cabin. Double duty!! Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] Perfect music companion for trip to the cabin
It's Access Point Mode which basically mean you can control it directly without having to have it on a network (it creates its own). It's the same as one of the features on the Duet. You can use just the server and your phone to complete a wireless player. In my case I put the RPI (Server) in my car and plug the output to the Aux input of the car. The server broadcasts an SSID and you can connect your phone to it and then use one of the SB emulation programs to control the server. I use Squeeze Commander, which is sadly no longer available. There are quite a few others. I hope that's clearer than I think it is. I may not be explaining it well. garym wrote: > what is "AP MODE" feature? Yes, love my Booms. Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] Announce piCorePlayer 3.20
Thanks Michael, This was more of a case where I was oblivious than anything LMS related. I had moved my playlists from an old server to the RPI a little while ago and just noticed the duplicates. Normally I just hit a playlist so I never noticed the duplicate albums. I thought rolling back would just be a quick and easy way to check. Last night I found that some of the playlists had paths with extra "/"'s in them. Don't know how or when they got in there, but I just went through and got rid of them. I found up to three extra hacks in some i.e: mnt/Music instead of /mnt/Music. Easy fix and I only have about 20 playlists of which about half needed changed. Thanks for checking in and thank you very much for all your work. I've had my SB's for many years now and have put together 3 RPI versions that I have a good time with. In the old days we would just run stereo, tie the output grounds together and hook the left+ and right + to the speaker. Phase didn't matter with one speaker. I have no idea if this will work for you, but maybe someone with knowledge of both old and new tech can help. Best of luck. Howard gac wrote: > Hi there, > > New here. Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] Announce piCorePlayer 3.20
Hi Jeff, I gave this a try and all it managed was to dismount the drive that my music files are on. Here is the response I received... "Sent 50 bytes received 17 bytes 134.00 bytes/sec total size is 0 speedup is 0.00" I spent some time searching rsync and tried what seemed to me logical switches. Here's the command you mentioned with my source and destination.. rsync -avz /mnt/Music /mnt/EXTBackup/ Do you see anything I'm obviously missing? Can you recommend somewhere to get more info that might be more of a novices speed? Hi Jeff, It's running, but very slow. Slower than across the network. The Command Window times out, but I assume it is still working. When it quit responding, I closed WINscp and reopened it. Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] Announce piCorePlayer 3.20
Thanks Jeff for all your help. This method does appear to be pretty slow. It's probably much better if the files just need updated and not created. For now I will probably just plug both drives in to my PC and use Xcopy. Or use Samba to Xcopy from the RPI to a drive plugged in to my PC. I'm much more familiar with it. I will keep experimenting with Rsync. Both devices, BTW, are eth0. Although I can't imagine this matters when using Rsync internally on the RPI. You're probably right, the RPI just isn't up to the task. Thanks again for all your patience and knowledge. Hi Jeff, O.K. I think I have done it correctly. Hmmm, It wasn't/isn't empty. Would one of those commands dis-mounted it? That seems to be the issue I've had going along, I've noticed. After I sent the last reply I went to add a new Folder.jpg and noticed mnt/Music was no longer mounted again. I remounted it and it's all there now. So I just reran ls -la /mnt/Music and this time is shows all of my music. At least each Artist Folder. I am trying the rsync -avz /mnt/Music /mnt/EXTBackup/ again and it is working. Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] Announce piCorePlayer 3.20
Ah, but I don't think I can sync two directories on the same machine. That's what I'm really trying to do. I used to use a Windows XCopy .bat file .to do it on my old server. It would sync my Music Folder to a second drive within the same machine. I'd just click on it after I had made any changes and it worked like a dream. I could even use it to make a second copy of the Music Folder on a blank drive. Thanks for you help. Looks like I'll just have to do it over the network. I sync'd one back up already. That was fairly quick. I'm doing a second backup on a black drive and it says that I may not live long enough to see it complete :-) Howard Greg Erskine wrote: > https://www.digitalocean.com/community/tutorials/how-to-use-rsync-to-sync-local-and-remote-directories-on-a-vps > > Type rsync by itself to get full help. > > I'd use the dry-run option to test. I've found it very stable. My problem is I get to fooling around with it and... I have 2 other RPI's, a Transporter, Boom, two Duet Controllers and a Touch running off of it without a problem. I think the best best is to look back at Paul's suggestion about using Wiin32Disk to make an .img file of your SD card. That gets you back to where you were the quickest in case of some sort of failure. I remove power from al of mine constantly and it hasn't been an issue. Best of luck. Hmmm, not sure I follow. I was thinking I would backup the image to a folder on my PC. That way I could have one for each of the three RPI's I have (only one is the server). But my question was (looking for the lazy, easy way) can I back up right from the RPI using SAMBA. That way I would not have to remove the card from the RPI. Woke up this morning and my RPI3/piCorePlayer was sitting at the TC@SBServer log on prompt. I'm assuming I need to reload, but not sure of the proper procedure. I have a current backup mydata.tgz file and a current newconfig.cfg file. How do I go about reloading my server from the backups? Do I have to load the picoreplayer3.22.img file first? Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] BETA: piCorePlayer 4.0.0
Hi Paul, Not sure what wasn't clear. probably talking about 4 different pi's with 4 different uses. I will say that when someone offers a "Audio Optimized" anything, a lot of us will jump at it. It kind of insinuates it would be useful for anything related to music reproduction. Some of us use the server a a player. In my case, the pi I use in my car has a thumb drive with a music library on it. It makes perfect sense to me to use it as a server and a player. It has the added utility of being able to hook it to a pair of powered speakers and use it around the pool. That said, I'm starting to understand the Audio Optimization kernel, so, o.k., I get it. Use it on a Ethernet connected, sever use device only. Yeah, I'm a little put off. I have on many occasions admitted my lack of understanding when it comes to the voodoo you guys do. If I have to be able to understand instinctively what it is you're doing, then I and folks like myself, should stick with the iPod or SONOS. I get the feeling Logitech felt it wasn't worth supporting uneducated users either. Howard paul- wrote: > Howard, > > Please dont take this the wrong way. Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] BETA: piCorePlayer 4.0.0
Hi Greg. I don't think the frustration was on my part. I don't pretend to understand what goes in to what you folks do and do well. My misunderstanding started before 4.0 with 3.5 Audio Kernel. When I updated insitu I saw it and tried it on all four of my pi's. Worked like a charm. So when 4.0 ACK came out, I saw the warning and still decided to give it a try. It worked with 3.5, so...why not. It didn't work in all four. I don't think my email had a frustration tone and I certainly didn't mean for it to. I was just explaining what I experienced. I'm not technically proficient in what you folks do by any stretch of the imagination. However, I have been a faithful SB customer in that I have purchased every SB that's come out since the SB3, help support pCP and have four Raspberry pi's running pCP. I enjoy messing with them and listening to them. If understanding how things work were a pre-requisite for owning an product, most of us would still be rubbing two sticks together. For that matter, if understanding what most fields in picorplayer do, I shouldn't use it. Warnings are meant for the unadventurous. More times than I can say I have made a setting and just held my breath. What's the worst that can happen? I start over. It was Paul who encouraged me to do just that when it came to DAC settings. Make changes and use my ear. I enjoy pcP and think you guys are amazing. I'll try to refrain from asking dumb question. Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] BETA: piCorePlayer 4.0.0
I guess I spoke a little too soon. I update my pi3B to 4.0AudioCore and WiFi didn't work so I went back to 4.0.0-B5 and WiFi still doesn't work. Is there a way to go back to 3.50? Not listed on the available updates. Also, went ahead and update an old pi B. It actually worked fine up until I tried to access the server, other than just play or selecting and playing a playlist. When I tried to look at the server (Music Source) it stopped. If I reboot it, I can once again choose a playlist and play it. Until I try to select any other menu item, it plays. I reverted to 4.0.0-b5 and WiFi works, but access to the server is iffy. One time you can make a selection, such as Albums, and it works and then next time it times out and just spins for a few minutes. After a few minutes it will start playing again and you may or may not be able to make a selection. When it times out I still have access through the web interface so I'm confident the WiFi is still working when it can't contact the server. The pi3B+ I have works fine. I don't use WiFi, but I do use AP Mode and that works fine. Oddly enough that one is a server (LMS) and I am using 4.0 AudioCore. Everything seems fine with it. I think I'll wait on updating the server, which is my 4th pi. So I guess my only real question is how can I go back to 3.50 on two of these pi's. I've updated two out of 4 of my pi's with perfect results. I do have a question about something I may have just noticed. Was there a warning about running LMS with the AudioCore in 3.5.0? I've been running two of my pi's that way on 3.5.0 and haven't had any issues. I can change it on my home server, but am still using one of my pi's, which is a server, for outdoor and car use. Ah. Thanks. I have set some now based on a few articles I've read. Do you have any suggestions when it comes to the mixer settings or even the ALSA settings relative to this DAC? O.K., I swapped inputs to no avail. However, that gave me another thought. I put the RPI in HDMI 1 and booted it. Again, it could not connect to the router. So I left it in HDMI 1 and restarted the RPI. As long as I switched ti to another input on the monitor before I let it time out on finding a router, it connected. So I'm still scratching my head... Is there a way to have my pCP start playing a song mix of specific genres when the player boots up? I don't want favorites. This is the one that I have in my car and the power to the pCP gets cut when the ignition is turned off. I would love for it to boot back up upon energizing and start playing a song mix. Relative to the pCP in my car... When the ignition is turned off, the power to the pCP is lost. I do have it set to in Tweaks to Auto Start LMS with Randomplay Tracks, but that doesn't seem to do it. Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] Announce: piCorePlayer 3.5.0
I've thought about where to post this and I think this is the correct forum. I have two pCP's. One on a RPI3B and one on a RPI3B+. I don't think this makes any difference, but what do I know. Ill answer that. Nothing. On the RPI3B, using the command "pcp rand" in the tweaks page of pCP, the player starts playing a random mix of songs when it reboots. The behavior is the same if it's just a reboot or a hard start. On the RPI3B+, it does not, in either type of start up. Both are running pCP 3.50 and the latest LMS software. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling "Random Mix" and if it was acting the same on both players/servers I would say it was in the LMS. Any thoughts on why or how to track it down? Alright, I realize I might be being a bit of a pest here, but I thought I would give this one more try after narrowing this down to the AP Mode. I won't go over the entire thing I'm trying to do, but suffice it to say that if you are using APMode, commands from "Auto start LMS" and/or "User command" on the "Tweaks" page do not work. Even using commands from winscp do not work. Turn off APmode and they work fine from all three places. Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] Announce: piCorePlayer 3.5.0
Hi Greg, What I've been trying to do is use a pCP in my car, so the APmode was a god send. But, no matter if you use the LMS settings or the Tweaks, the player will not reboot and start playing a playlist. It always looses the previous playlist I'm assuming because it looses power from the car. However, what I found from just trying this in the house is it behaves the same way. If APmode is on none of the commands from Tweak or LMS do anything. I did another post explaining that a little while ago. I may be confusing the matter. Thanks, Howard Greg Erskine wrote: > Hi Howard, > > I am a little confused reading your post so I'll just make a couple of > points. > > "pcp rand" generates a random playlist for the player. Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] Announce: piCorePlayer 3.5.0
What are the restrictions on the AP mode? Specifically, when using AP Mode do I have to use wireless for my connection? Will LMS start if it can't find a connection of any sort? If not, can I force it? The reason behind asking is I'd like to try using the pCP player in the car. It would be great to use AP Mode and my phone (or Duet Controller) to control it. I tried it, but could not get AP mode to work using ethernet. It would still connect using wifi. And when I tried using wifi without a router being available, LMS would not start. Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] Announce: piCorePlayer 3.5.0
That...is...so...cool! Works perfectly. I'm using Christian Erpelding's Squeeze Commander on my phone to control it. I don't know what happened to Christian, but he had the best phone app for SB there is. The only thing I have left to ask is the behavior when I bring the RPI back in the house. Instead of using the static ip it is set up with, it uses DHCP (Still on eth0) to find a different ip address. Is there a way to get it to recognize the static ip address already set up? The only was I can get it to do that is to stop AP Mode and reboot. Really not a big deal all in all. On my RPI3B can't seem to get AP working. When setting up the AP, no choices are displayed in Channel. Worked easily on the RPI3B+. Any suggestions, please. BTW, the AP is very cool. Makes it really easy to put a battery on one of these and slap it in the car. Once again, thank you very much.
