[vchkpw] Outside Virus and Spam Filtering

2003-08-21 Thread Wil Hatfield
Ok... we are going to use an outside MX forwarding service to scan all
incoming mail coming to the servers from other hosts for spam and viruses.
Now how can I lock things down so ONLY the users popping in for SMTP and the

configured I just don't want to lock everybody out. If I recall it is done
in tcp.smtp correct?

[vchkpw] which vpopmail to upgrade from 5.2.1

2003-08-21 Thread isp
I'm getting increasingly worried about my install running vpopmail v5.2.1.
Don't want to get too far behind the times. :-)

Michael Bowe's guide
http://www.pipeline.com.au/staff/mbowe/isp/webmail-server.htm
now advocates v 5.3.24, which I guess seems ok given how the recent bug
reports have shaken out.

HOWEVER, what do I need to know about the upgrade itself on a running
system of vpopmail, qmail, courier 1.7, squirrel 1.4.1 ?? I'm into the
MySQL functions for vpopmail AND Squirrelmail settings and addressbook.

I don't use qmailadmin now (haven't had a need to yet) so I suspect I'll
build that new once I upgrade. One less thing to worry about when
upgrading.

Any tips, warnings, howtos?
Thx. D.

I dont forsee any problems if you just follow the steps :

extract vpopmail-5.3.24
setup the vmysql.h
configure
make
make install-strip

then run a few tests to make sure all is working ok (eg do some pop auths,
make a test domain then del the domain)

if it doesnt work for any reason, just go back to your 5.2.1 source dir and
run make install-strip which will restore your previous config

Next you will need to build yourself a new install of courier (so it can
link into the newly created vpopmail libs).

You dont have to touch squirrelmail, as it doesnt talk to vpopmail directly.
As long as you get courier-imap running, then squirrelmail will be happy.

You also dont need to touch mysql

qmailadmin is an optional (but recommended) addon. Even if you dont want
your users to have access to it, it is worth installing just for your own
use. It makes many account/mailbox tasks very easy.

[vchkpw] Pulling raw messages out of a maildir

2003-08-21 Thread Dave Richardson - Lists
I have a filter that moves incoming virus found msgs in my Admin
account to a subfolder so that I can observe what kind of virus
flow/traffic is hitting my domains. I had intended to write a little
perl/mrtg processor and make some pretty graphs to WOW! my customers.

And then this asswipe SoBig variant worm hits this week and I've got
thousands of virus found notices now, still arriving at almost 1 per
minute.

I want to physically pull the mail message files out of the Admin user's
virus found folder (below INBOX) and just save them in a tar.gz file
until I write my scripts and process them.

Q: Any harm in leaving qmail/vpopmail up and running while working at
the file system level to move the messages out of the Maildir tree?
I DO NOT want to risk damaging this account, since it's my real Admin
account.

Help appreciated.
Thx,D.

don't ever touch anything in a tmp directory unless no mail-related
software is running- no qmail-send, no IMAP or POP3 server (i.e. the
machine is in single-user mode.) any files you find in a tmp
directory are half-written messages which are in the process of being
delivered to the maildir. once the file is totally written it is then
renamed into the new directory, where it is available all at once.
(other mail systems occasionally run into issues when they try to read
a message while it's being delivered- using maildirs immediately does
away with that issue.)

other than that it shouldn't be dangerous, although it's not the best
idea in the world. if you write the script as a cron job once a minute
you're introducing the risk of a race condition (the message may make
it to your email program before the cron job fires.) and if you try to
improve your odds in the race by running in a loop and checking every
five seconds, you're still keeping the CPU busy and there's no
guarantee you're going to win the race for any given message.

a better solution would be to use maildrop or procmail or something
similar to filter the message on its way into the maildir. this way if
a message comes in that you want to save elsewhere, it gets saved there
directly and never touches your real mailbox at all- no need to worry
about timing.

maildrop knows how to handle maildirs, i'm not sure if procmail does or
not.

[vchkpw] 5.3.23 vadduser segfaults

2003-08-21 Thread Paul L. Allen

I upgraded from 5.2.1 to 5.3.23 recently to get a fix for the bug in vchkpw
that stopped the authdaemond authentication working. I found that vadduser
has a segmentation fault when I try to add a user (no switchs used). By
not giving the password as a parameter I find that it waits until I press
return after entering the password a second time before segfaulting. I
also found that vadduser does the same thing (and I suspect so will
vmoduser and vdeluser).

Configuration switches used to build it were:

  [EMAIL PROTECTED] \
  --enable-tcp-server-file=/var/vpopmail/etc/tcp.smtp \
  --enable-tcp-rules-prog=/usr/bin/tcprules \
  --enable-roaming-users=y \
  --enable-relay-clear=30

Due to a setup I inherited which I'm reluctant to change, the original
vpopmail installation of a much earlier version has /home/vpopmail
specified as the home directory but /home/vpopmail is actually a symlink
to /var/vpopmail, with anything that has to refer to the vpopmail
directory using /home/vpopmail (I know it's not efficient, but the
guy who did that install had done almost all of it with vpopmail
living in /home/vpopmail when the boss told him he wanted the mail
stored on /var because it was a much bigger partition). I mention
the symlink just in case it has a bearing on the issue.

I see from the changelog that in 5.3.17 a change was made in vcdb.c
to stop vadduser dumping core if the -s switch is used, and I suspect
that might have introduced a bug (although if I do use the -s switch
it still segfaults on me).

For now I've copied over the 5.2.1 versions of vadduser, vadddomain,
vmoduser and vdeluser (I don't know what vdeloldusers is for and there
doesn't seem to be any documentation about it) and hope that there are
no subtle incompatibilities.

Any ideas (better still, fixes) would be appreciated.

The short answer is no. The chkuser patch does check local settings and
read local files such as .qmail-default to check on the
bounce-no-mailbox settings. It also won't check for domains not listed
in virtualdomains.

I suppose it could be hacked to operate correctly but a quick glace at
the patch tells me I'd have to read through the vpopmail source to see
how it handles alias's etc and if it reads them from a local disk store
as well.

What you COULD do, is mount the vpopmail home dir over NFS and maybe the
qmail/control and qmail/users and run it as a second delivery mail
server. That would work and remove the problem with my above statements.

their infected machines were overloading the firewalls we supplied
that are 99% idle in normal use and, of course, they were too clueless
to deal with the problem in a sensible fashion).

Sigh. Customers. You can't live with them; you can't cut them up into
small pieces and flush them down the toilet (not if you want to get paid).

I'm personally still using 5.3.20 on my production machine (I haven't
gotten around to upgrading it to 5.3.24 and recompiling courier,
qmailadmin and qmail-smtp-chkuser).

Has anyone out there upgraded to 5.2.2 from 5.2.1? I classified it as
beta on the SourceForge site because we haven't tested it very
thoroughly. It is primarily made up of bugfixes ported from the 5.3
series, but we could have introduced some new problems.

I think even though you introduced new problems, they are most probably in
newest features. I also use 5.3.20 but I didnt enable the features which
has just been invented in newest releases. This approach works great for
me. I didnt have a single bug related problem in 5.3.20. :)

Great work!

Try the seekable patch located at www.thesafebox.com (for Vpopmail)

Once applied compiled and installed everything worked great.

That bug was fixed in vpopmail-5.3.24(available from http://sourceforge.net/projects/vpopmail

The incompatibility with authdaemon should have been fixed around
5.3.8. If you compile and install vpopmail 5.3.20, then recompile
courier, you should not see this happen.

If you do, we'd love to hear about it. Michael Bowe and I both reviewed
the code in recent versions and couldn't get it to fail in the way
described in the original post.

Think the problem is now solved, I hadnt re-compiled courier-imap after
updating vpopmail and qmailadmin, quick re-compile with
--with-module=authvchkpw as the only configure option and it seems to be
happy..
will keep you posted if I am wrong!!
thanks again for your help..
