You may need to go into the braille setings and forget the device, turn off
bluetooth, Reboot the phone, and then turn on bluetooth, go back into the
braille settings and try pairing them again.
If that doesn't work, then I would contact both Apple Accessibility and the
Pronto manufacturer.
Good luck,

Re: Removing an album from my phone

When I list the albums on my phone, I can't see a way of deleting
anything. I think you may have to do it on the computer. Of course you
could simply uncheck all the songs then resync the phone, that way the
songs would be gone from the phone but the music would remain in your
library.

Re: Random number generator suggestions anyone?

2014-04-24 Thread Woody Anna Dresner
Hi,

Random Pro, developed by Wegenerlabs, is fully accessible and works great. I
think it's also free, but I could be mistaken about that since I've had it for
a couple of years.

It's very easy to use. There are two buttons, one labeled Button, and one
labeled Start. Press the one called Button to set up your range. Use the
normal Back gesture or Back button to return to the main screen, and double-tap
Start. A number appears near the top of the screen, and VoiceOver will read it
if you focus on it. Double-tap that number as needed to get subsequent ones. VO
will tell you what each number is.

The link is

Enjoy,
Anna

RE: Eyes-Free Text Input on iOS

2014-04-24 Thread DJ
I agree here. I've been watching as people attacked like a pack of mad
dogs. This would make me think more than twice about developing any apps
for the blind or promoting such apps for fear of a very negative experience
as this.

I have been following this thread with interest and curiocity. While I can
read braille, I have hand injuries which prevent me from using any app which
uses braille input, however, I find it strange how Ryan's proposal seems to
be received in a somewhat negative way. Yes, there are already 2 or maybe 3
such apps out there, but why not support what Ryan and his team are doing
and then judging whether their app is good or not. Considering how many
audio recorder, notetaking, navigation/GPS apps are out there (and these are
just 3 areas, I could name many more) what is wrong with having
alternatives? Maybe Ryan and his team are going to release an app which is
just going to blow all the others out of the water, maybe it's more or less
the same and maybe it's a total flop; but to point out that he should have
done his research as there are already 2 apps out there and speculating that
it probably won't be very good because it's done by a bunch of students
instead of a programmer with 30-year experience I find strange. Anyhow,
while this programmer may have written code on an early DOS machine or maybe
a Commodore, he or she certainly doesn't have 30 years experience with
writing iOS apps since it's only been out for 7 years. Some kid who started
writing apps at 15 would now be more or less ready to graduate university at
22 and could have written iOS apps for as long as iOS is around. Anybody who
wants to know about the app and find out how it differs or is going to
differ from MBraille could just sign up for the testing since I assume the
app is not completely done and ready for prime time in which case they could
have just released it informing the Viphone community of its existence.

Anyhow, just some thoughts and I do hope Ryan finds some people who will
participate in a constructive way and I wish him luck. After all, consider
how you would like to be treated were you in his place doing something like
this as a university project.

Hello,

My name is Ryan Drapeau and I'm working with the mobile accessibility group
at the University of Washington. We are looking for volunteers to give us
feedback on an iPhone app that we have been developing. In order to help,
you must be proficient on iOS and you should also know Braille. This can be
done remotely.

The app is called Perkinput. Perkinput is a new way to enter text on your
iPhone or iPad without using a keyboard. Perkinput is based on the Braille
keyboard. After you enter something in the Perkinput app, you can send that
text in an email, a text message, or simply copy the text and paste it in
any other application.

Let me know if you'd be interested in learning more about it or feel free
to download it yourself on the iTunes Store: iOS
Storehttp://itunes.apple.com/us/app/perkinput/id767748170

Best,
Ryan

Why not just use iTunes to update. you should be fine. It sounds to me like

RE: Ios 7.11 is out

2014-04-24 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Lori,

As DJ already pointed out, first make sure that you are indeed connected to
your own Wi-fi by touching the status bar in the middle. Once you hear the
time, swipe left once and Voiceover should say one of the following:

3G (or maybe it will be 4G or LTE depending on what type of connection and
phone you have) or it will say something like this:

3 of 3 Wi-Fi bars, Home

Whether it will say 1 of 3 WiFi bars, 2 of 3 WiFi bars or 3 of 3 WiFi bars
depends on the strength of the signal.

In my case it says Home because that is the name of my WiFi network, for
you it will most likely say something different.

Before iOS 7 it would only announce the signal strength, Voiceover
announcing the name of the network you are connected to after the signal
strength is new in iOS 7.

OK, if you are getting a reading of WiFi signal strength and you can indeed
do things like use SIRI, check emails and so on then you are connected to
WiFi and are online and the update should download.

What I would like to know is whether when you touch the Settings icon it
will say just Settings or does it say Settings, 1 new item?

If it says 1 new item then that means the update has already been downloaded
which iO?S will do in the background usually within a day or 2 after an
update comes out, and it's ready to be installed.

You can verify this by going to Settings, General and Software Update; if it
just says that there is a new update and there is only an Install button,
then the update is already downloaded. If it says Download and Install then
it means exactly that.

Once you double tap on Install or Download and Install, you should
eventually get to a screen where you have to agree to Apple's terms, the
agree button is at the bottom right of the screen and after you double tap
on it a message pops up and you have to double tap another Agree button.

After that the update will install.

If you also have a 4-digit passcode set on your phone and that would be the
same passcode you enter every time you unlock your phone, then it will ask
you for that passcode.

So, maybe you can tell me which phone you have and whether you do have to
enter a 4-digit passcode each time you unlock? If, of course, you have a 5S
you may have set it up to use your fingerprint, but you would have still
have selected a 4-difgit password which you have to enter the first time
after you reboot yoru phone or also if you want to go into Settings and
Passcode and Touch ID in order to make changes there.

Regards,

Sieghard

VO Keys Behaving Differently after Update

2014-04-24 Thread Aser Tolentino
Hello all,
I am very glad to find that the responsiveness issue with Bluetooth keyboards
has been resolved by this latest update. However, I noticed this morning that
the VO keys appear to be acting differently. Instead of moving from element to
element sequentially like left and right flicks, VO+left or right arrow now
seem to be moving across whatever element is selected one character at a time.
Is anyone else experiencing this and can you tell me if this is how it's
supposed to work now? I've duplicated the behavior with an Anker Ultra-Slim BT
Keyboard and an Apple Wireless Keyboard.
Any insight would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Hi Steve,

A single finger double tap only works if Voiceover is focused on the Dictate
button. One of the small but convenient improvements in iOS 7 is that as
long as you are in edit mode a 2-finger double tap anywhere on the screen
will start and stop dictation. As Christina pointed out, you do have to be
in edit mode inside a text field otherwise the 2-finger double tap will do
what it's supposed to do otherwise and that is to start and stop playing
music or whatever was playing last.

Sieghard

Backup and Transfer

2014-04-24 Thread A R
Hi list,
Apple is going to be replacing my iPhone with a new iPhone. I have backed my
current phone up in iTunes. However I have not done so through iCloud.

The data that I am most concerned about getting from the old phone to the new
phone, are things like text message history, phone log calling history,
voicemails, voice memos and notes.

I have heard that sometimes some information is not included in the backup or
successfully included in the transfer to the new device.

Do both or neither, iTunes and iCloud, include text message history and phone
call history in the backups?

Once a backup has been made, how do you successfully put it on a new device?

Thanks for all help and suggestions!

Amy

Here's how you back up you're phone to iCloud. First go to settings iCloud
storage and backup then choose back up now to start the backup. Once the backup
is finished when you get the new phone and it asks you to set it up as a new
iPhone or restore from backup choose restore from backup.

WordPress.comI did download this iDrive app and got the .99 cent upgrade with

I guess I just can’t resist a bargain.
But the actual app seems to be pretty VO friendly so far.

Get 50GB of iDrive iOS cloud storage for 99
cents per year
by MacDailyNews

  [cfsp key=adsense_336x280]Cloud-storage
provider iDrive has extended this appealing deal to owners of iPhones, iPads,
and iPod Touches, Rick Broida reports for CNET. You have to be a new iDrive
customer, but otherwise the deal is exactly as good as it sounds: 50GB of cloud
storage for an impossibly low 99 cents per year.

When iDrive first told me about this, I was sure
it meant 99 cents for the first year, then a more typical $50 to $100 each year
after that. But a company rep told me in no uncertain terms: 'It will be the
same [99 cents] a year from now. [This is not] a first-year discount or
limited-time offer,' Broida reports. To get it, you need one of the
aforementioned iOS devices on which to install the iDrive app and sign up for
an account. (Never mind the in-app purchase options shown in the App Store; you
should see the 99-cent deal once you swipe through the getting-started
screens.)

More info via Apple's iTunes App Store: iDrive
(Online Backup) - Pro Softnet Corp

Broida reports, By the way, although you need an
iOS (or Android) device to take advantage of this offer, once you have your
iDrive account, you can use it across all platforms: Windows, Windows Phone,
Mac, Linux, Android, and iOS.

Re: Help with ripped CD fragmenting in iTunes

2014-04-24 Thread Gmail
It sounds like this is an album with multiple artists listed on it. This is
known as a compilation album. I'm not sure how, but there are ways to deal with
this in iTunes. I would try a Google search on this topic.

Thanks,
Ari

 Hi,

I have a CD of a musical entitled Once. I ripped it within iTunes. When I
look for it in iTunes on my PC, only 4 of the 16 tracks are listed. The 4
listed tracks state the Album title and specify it is the Original Broadway
Cast, but then refers to Various Artists. I’m guessing the problem is that
the native cd tagging is such that there isn’t a consistent Album Artist,
with different tracks listing different performers. But, I can’t find the
other 12 tracks, even when I search for the album title, Once.

There wasn’t an option before ripping that allowed me to check or modify the
Album Artist, at least that I could find, or know how to find.

Can someone help and guide me in how to tackle this? I understand that
somehow there is a way to check an album as a compilation, but first I need
to find the other 12 tracks, put them in the right sequence, etc.

Thanks in advance for any help that can be provided.

I did download this iDrive app and got the .99 cent upgrade with no problems.
It is still uploading photos, videos, etc. now. I downloaded the PC version,
too, but it is pretty inaccessible to me. I do have iCloud but it does not
provide enough room for all my videos and photos since I have a 64 GB iPhone.

When iDrive first told me about this, I was
sure it meant 99 cents for the first year, then a more typical $50 to $100 each
year after that. But a company rep told me in no uncertain terms: 'It will be
the same [99 cents] a year from now.

Broida reports, By the way, although you need
an iOS (or Android) device to take advantage of this offer, once you have your
iDrive account, you can use it across all platforms: Windows, Windows Phone,
Mac, Linux, Android, and iOS.

Question about keyboard for iPhone

Hello,

I have 2 questions, please:
1. How many keyboards are there for the iPhone? What's the best for a blind
user? I read about the bluetooth, but I also heard about one that is solar.
2. How much can I accomplish using the keyboard? Only to type emails and
notes?

Thank you,

RE: Question about keyboard for iPhone

2014-04-24 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Rena,

The solar keyboard is probably the one from Logitech and while it can
recharge using light, it still is a Bluetooth keyboard and I think it's
pretty safe to say that all iPhone external keyboards connect via Bluetooth.
The Apple Wireless keyboard is very nice, but so is the Logitech K811 which
also allows you to connect 2 more devices, for example, if you had an
iPhone, iPad and Apple TV you could connect all 3 devices and switch between
them simply by pressing F1, F2 and F3.

You can pretty much fully navigate your iPhone with a Bluetooth keyboard, of
course you can type text, you can copy, cut and paste, you can even dial a
phone number, but you can't input numbers during a call for example if you
call your bank and have to enter an account number. I guess I should qualify
this, you can do this if the dialpad is on the screen and you could then use
the arrows to go to a particular number and select/dial it, but if you had
to enter a long number and go, for example, from 1 to 0 and back to 2 or
something like that you would have to arrow and select your numbers awefully
fast so the system wouldn't time out.

Sieghard

Re: Question about keyboard for iPhone

2014-04-24 Thread Gmail
If you're going to be traveling with the keyboard a lot, I wouldn't get the
Apple one. It's a great keyboard, except that it turns on with the use of a
button, which can easily be pressed. This is unfortunate, especially if you
have the keyboard in a bag which gets bumped a lot, because it might be turned
on often. I would recommend getting a keyboard that uses a physical on-off
switch.

Pretty much any Bluetooth keyboard you get will work with the iPhone. There are
keyboards that are very very small and pocket-sized, but I don't really like
using these. If I'm going to be using a keyboard, I'm usually going to be
typing for quite a while, so getting something about the size of the Apple
keyboard works well for me. Of course, this is just my own use case, and yours
might very. Personally, I like using dictation or Fleksy VO for short things.

Thanks,
Ari

Sieghard, how big would you say the Logitech keyboard it is. To the Apple
keyboard? Is it around the same size? Also, does it use a physical on-off
switch to turn on? I really like the Apple keyboard, but it's one drawback for
me was that it used a button to turn on and off, which in my use case, often
got pressed a lot.

Re: Question about keyboard for iPhone

2014-04-24 Thread RobH.
I think all the keyboards are bluetooth, hwether charged by solar or AC
adapter.

I think you can do more or less anything with one, - type, navigate, which
is pretty well all of it; and after that, it is down to personal taste.
Bigger or smaller, ifxed to the case or separate? and so on.

Subject: Question about keyboard for iPhone

Hello,

I have 2 questions, please:
1. How many keyboards are there for the iPhone? What's the best for a blind
user? I read about the bluetooth, but I also heard about one that is solar.
2. How much can I accomplish using the keyboard? Only to type emails and
notes?
Thank you,
Rena

Hi Sieghard,

I touched on the time and it said the time then it said status bar item . Then
I swiped over to the left once and it said att network 2 of 5 bars signal
strength. But what is LTE? then it says status bar item.

When I touch the settings icon it will say double tap to open.

But when I go to settings thenI double tap on general and that opens up then
I double tap on software update and IOS 7.11 is there waiting for me to
download. Right now I have IOS 7.1 on my I phone 5.
And IOS 7.11 says download and install.

I can use siri just fine but using my gmail app to check email is a different
story and right now I'm having issues with my gmail app. But that issue and
problem is for another day. Take care.

  Sent: Thursday, April 24, 2014 12:01 PM
Subject: RE: Ios 7.11 is out

Before iOS 7 it would only announce the signal strength, Voiceover announcing
the name of the network you are connected to after the signal strength is new
in iOS 7.

OK, if you are getting a reading of WiFi signal strength and you can indeed
do things like use SIRI, check emails and so on then you are connected to WiFi
and are online and the update should download.

What I would like to know is whether when you touch the Settings icon it will
say just Settings or does it say Settings, 1 new item?

If it says 1 new item then that means the update has already been downloaded
which iO?S will do in the background usually within a day or 2 after an update
comes out, and it's ready to be installed.

You can verify this by going to Settings, General and Software Update; if it
just says that there is a new update and there is only an Install button, then
the update is already downloaded. If it says Download and Install then it means
exactly that.

Once you double tap on Install or Download and Install, you should eventually
get to a screen where you have to agree to Apple's terms, the agree button is
at the bottom right of the screen and after you double tap on it a message pops
up and you have to double tap another Agree button.

After that the update will install.

If you also have a 4-digit passcode set on your phone and that would be the
same passcode you enter every time you unlock your phone, then it will ask you
for that passcode.

So, maybe you can tell me which phone you have and whether you do have to
enter a 4-digit passcode each time you unlock? If, of course, you have a 5S you
may have set it up to use your fingerprint, but you would have still have
selected a 4-difgit password which you have to enter the first time after you
reboot yoru phone or also if you want to go into Settings and Passcode and
Touch ID in order to make changes there.

  Regards,

  Sieghard

Re: Ios 7.11 is out

2014-04-24 Thread Ioana Gandrabur
Hi,

It sounds like you are not connected to wifi.
YOu have to find out what the password for your wifi is.
It's not necessarily the same as the passcode for the router.
You could try it anyway.
If not, there might be a way to reset the wifi password by logging on to your
router with the passcode you know and resetting it. It's a bit involved so Id
first try to find out the wifi password.
Updating via iTunes as others have suggested is a good possibility but if you
ever want to use the wifi network you will need that password.

Good luck.
Best,
Ioana

Perkinput

2014-04-24 Thread David Chittenden
Perkinput is a good first attempt for braille entry. The concept is excellent.
I only need to use one hand for the input, and I find it fairly easy to convert
braille to each line of the braille cell. With a free price tag (probably
because the app is experimental), it becomes quite good.

Currently, the app only receives input in grade I braille. Personally, I would
like to see an option for switching to computer braille, but as the fourth
finger position is used to indicate a blank column in the braille cell, this
would be difficult.

The instructions fail to mention how to backspace, which appears to be two
three-finger swipes left or right while the iPhone is in landscape / braille
input mode.

The instructions are not clear about returning to the main screen by performing
a three-finger swipe in the 90 degrees direction from the double swipe for
backspace.

Finally, comma (dot 2) is missing from the current braille input table.

This is a braille keyboard entry app that I will use, especially as I can use
it one-handed.

WiFi Status

2014-04-24 Thread Les Kriegler
With all of the attempts to assist Laurie, I decided to check my status. I'm
running the latest version of the OS with an iPhone 5S. When I swipe left or
right, the name of my WiFi network is not verbalized. I went into settings,
WiFi is on and the name of my network is shown. I then went back into the
status area and did a two finger swipe down and the name of my network was
verbalized. So I'm wondering Laurie if you may in fact be connected to WiFi?
This is confusing to say the least. I used to see the name of my network when
I swiped around on the top of the screen, but at least at the moment, I do not.

It sounds like this is an album with multiple artists listed on it. This is
known as a compilation album. I'm not sure how, but there are ways to deal with
this in iTunes. I would try a Google search on this topic.

Thanks,

There wasn’t an option before ripping that allowed me to check or modify the

Can someone help and guide me in how to tackle this? I understand that somehow
there is a way to check an album as a compilation, but first I need to find the

It sounds like this is an album with multiple artists listed on it. This is
known as a compilation album. I'm not sure how, but there are ways to deal with
this in iTunes. I would try a Google search on this topic.

Thanks,

Ari

Hi,

I have a CD of a musical entitled Once. I ripped it within iTunes. When I look
for it in iTunes on my PC, only 4 of the 16 tracks are listed. The 4 listed
tracks state the Album title and specify it is the Original Broadway Cast, but
then refers to Various Artists. I’m guessing the problem is that the native cd
tagging is such that there isn’t a consistent Album Artist, with different
tracks listing different performers. But, I can’t find the other 12 tracks,
even when I search for the album title, Once.

There wasn’t an option before ripping that allowed me to check or modify the
Album Artist, at least that I could find, or know how to find.

Can someone help and guide me in how to tackle this? I understand that somehow
there is a way to check an album as a compilation, but first I need to find the
other 12 tracks, put them in the right sequence, etc.

Thanks in advance for any help that can be provided.

RE: WiFi Status

Hello Les,

Another thing to look for which could help you determine if you are
connected to your wi-fi network is when you are in the Wi-Fi setting screen,
VO should say selected before announcing the name of said network. If it
doesn't, you are likely not connected. However, the absence of a Wi-Fi
identification in the status bar is a dead giveaway.

DJ, I may have been mistaken. When I hear my Wi-Fi network announced, is
announced after the signal strength information is given. I probably didn't
wait long enough. What is confusing is that when I see my carrier, that is
spoken on a separate line. So my guess is, I was connected but didn't wait long
enough to hear the name of the Wi-Fi network.

App switcher question

Recently I was speaking with a sighted iPhone user and mentioned closing

I have never went into gmail notifications and turned anything on. after I got

excellent. I only need to use one hand for the input, and I find it fairly
easy to convert braille to each line of the braille cell. With a free price
tag (probably because the app is experimental), it becomes quite good.

Currently, the app only receives input in grade I braille. Personally, I
would like to see an option for switching to computer braille, but as the
fourth finger position is used to indicate a blank column in the braille
 cell, this would be difficult.

The instructions fail to mention how to backspace, which appears to be two
three-finger swipes left or right while the iPhone is in landscape / braille
 input mode.

The instructions are not clear about returning to the main screen by
performing a three-finger swipe in the 90 degrees direction from the double
 swipe for backspace.

Finally, comma (dot 2) is missing from the current braille input table.

This is a braille keyboard entry app that I will use, especially as I can
 use it one-handed.

RE: Question about keyboard for iPhone

2014-04-24 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Yes, very much the same size, very nice keys and a very nice, quality feel.
On/off is a physical slider switch on the right side of the keyboard and it'
rather stiff, there is no way it would move by itself or if pushed inside a
bag.

Sieghard, how big would you say the Logitech keyboard it is. To the Apple
keyboard? Is it around the same size? Also, does it use a physical on-off
switch to turn on? I really like the Apple keyboard, but it's one drawback
for me was that it used a button to turn on and off, which in my use case,
often got pressed a lot.

Thanks,

it's pretty safe to say that all iPhone external keyboards connect via
Bluetooth.
The Apple Wireless keyboard is very nice, but so is the Logitech K811
which also allows you to connect 2 more devices, for example, if you
had an iPhone, iPad and Apple TV you could connect all 3 devices and
switch between them simply by pressing F1, F2 and F3.

You can pretty much fully navigate your iPhone with a Bluetooth
keyboard, of course you can type text, you can copy, cut and paste,
you can even dial a phone number, but you can't input numbers during a
call for example if you call your bank and have to enter an account
number. I guess I should qualify this, you can do this if the dialpad
is on the screen and you could then use the arrows to go to a
particular number and select/dial it, but if you had to enter a long
number and go, for example, from 1 to 0 and back to 2 or something
like that you would have to arrow and select your numbers awefully fast so
the system wouldn't time out.
