Hey Nitika,

Would it be worth sending this out to other lists (eg foundation etc) - or
are you'll looking for Indian online ambassadors only?

Cheers (and the leaderboard was great too.)

Congratulations to all the new chapter board members - Tinu, Naveen and
Sudhanwa...nice to see the EC expanding to other parts of the country in an
organic way.

And read your report with great interest, Gautam. It is really heartening to
see the chapter progressing from a registered entity at the start of this
year to a 'real' entity. Looking forward to the year ahead.

I'm sure everyone has thought of this already, but the WikiConference would
be a good time to recruit chapter members in bulk.

Cheers to all,

[Wikimediaindia-l] Pune intro to wikipedia workshop: a short report

2011-09-26 Thread Bishakha Datta
Dear all,

Four campus ambassadors conducted a 2-hour intro to wikipedia session as
part of an all-day workshop I was facilitating on Gender and Technology at
the Dept of Women's Studies, University of Pune. We had about 20
participants - more women than men, and an even mix of Marathi and English
speakers.

The 4 CAs who conducted the session were: Abhishek Suryawanshi, Devanshi
Tripathi, Arnav Sonara and Nikita Agarwal - between them they too
represented a good mix of genders and languages. I had earlier invited
Ashwin Baindur from the Pune community to conduct the workshop; the timing
didn't work for him.

The participants were introduced to both English and Marathi wikipedias,
where they tried to locate Sharmila Rege, dalit feminist and sociologist,
who heads the department. Since she didn't have a page on English wikipedia,
one was created - and this process of creation was used as an opportunity to
demonstrate key principles: references, citations, NPOV, verifiability, as
well as how to edit. Larger conversations around reliability and
authenticity were had, and the CAs cited their own experiences to answer the
question: Why edit?

I was particularly impressed by the way the CAs shared the workload among
themselves and by the way they pitched wikipedia to a bunch of newcomers:
inside out (from a newbie perspective) rather than outside in, anticipating
what a newcomer needs to know at each step - to be motivated and to progress
to the next step. They also suggested easy ways to edit at the start.
Judging by the last question from participants: "How can we contact you'll
if we need help?" it worked.

This was the first time undergrads had taught postgrads in this department -
a nice role reversal. And this was the first time the CAs had stepped
outside the India Education Program to do a non-program workshop. The
student-to-student thing really worked.

So many thanks Abhishek, Arnav, Devanshi and Nikita. It was great!

And thanks a ton, Hisham, for putting so much together at such short notice.

Cheers

I think Tory did a great job and had her finger on the pulse, and I do see
your larger point too.

So I think one good way forward in general - and this doesn't hold only for
wikipedia, but for history making in general - is for others to start
documenting and writing histories too. Either of individual indic language
wikipedias, or alternate views of the same thing.

It's always good to have multiple accounts of the same period/s or
phenomenon/s, seen through different eyes and lenses, if only to ensure that
there is no one official history.

In that spirit, I do think the first edition of the community newsletter
(published in 2010), subsequent editions of the newsletter, and Gautam's
article in Critical Point of View are also vital narratives of wikipedia in
India, that tell parts of the story. Hopefully, these are easily accessible,
online atleast.

Which is my way of saying that I don't see Tory's narrative as the official
one, and the others as unofficial. For me, they all tell parts of the story
through their own lenses.

While one narrative may dominate in the short run, in the medium and long
terms the existence of multiple
narratives usually does ensure that no single POV can rule. (look at all the
voices and multiple perspectives around Steve Jobs' passing).

Agree that power is also part of the equation: whose voice? whose narrative?
who puts it out?

And I think part of it is how we choose to see it and who/what we choose to
hear - if I choose to see Tory's piece as dominant because it was
commissioned by the Foundation, then that determines how much power I give
it. If I decide it is an interesting chronicle of a moment in time, then it
becomes 'a' version, not 'the' version.

Also: want to second Hisham in suggesting that people add their comments on
Tory's piece, since that too is the intention.

And I'm bowing out of this now, since I'm on a flight with lots of time to
spare and could go on and on and on. :)

Another way to think of a jury is as a committee - or a smaller group of
people, who convene to make something specific happen. And there are many
of these: ChapCom (Chapters Committee), NomCom (Nominations Committee),
CommCom (Communications Committee), to name a few.

And, of course, there are more than 11 committees that are part of
WikiConference India 2011.

Also, in this specific case, the jury is charged to pick noteworthy
wikipedians from among those nominated by different communities. So it is
not like the jury is separately nominating and deciding on its own, but
from a pool nominated by a larger community. (So it's a smaller subset of
the former, in a sense).

As conceived, the IEP and its parent the PPP (pardon the acronyms), were
about contributing to wikipedia, about learning how to contribute, and
about having fun while learning.

In practice, did it remain like that? Going by what I read, it sounded like
many of the students were under high stress to turn in these wikipedia
assignments to their teachers - and used every possible shortcut in the
book. (Exactly what I would have done in my student days).

I may be totally off-base on this, but am curious, so would appreciate some
info.

My question is: if this becomes a high stress exam type situ, is the
student likely to a)either see it as fun b)go back to it later for fun? In
which case, is this student likely to become a prospective wikipedia
editor, or is this student going to treat this as a one-time thing and
never want to do this ever again? (Given relationship with stress, exams,
teachers, marks)?

Also - larger related qs: is the aim of the India Ed program to increase
article content on wp (which can be done short-term) or to increase the
number of editors? Or both?

Cheers,

Good to hear back from one of the campus ambassadors. I think it would be
great if we could hear back from many more of you - as those who were on
the front lines of this program, what are your views on it? What did you
think worked? What would you change? What gave you a feeling of pride? What
made you worried?

By "you", I don't mean just you, but all the campus ambassadors who are on
this list. Hope you'll will write in and share your thoughts on these or
other aspects.

And in the midst of all the flak, congratulations, all CAs. With the huge
number of students overwhelming the program, each of you probably ended up
doing way more than you had signed up for. I hope you continue to take and
feel pride in that very sincere effort, regardless of the outcome of this.

Also - I would love to hear from Nitika, who was dealing with this program
on the ground. (What did you make of this, Nitika? Pros and cons?)

Please don't feel pressured by my request; we've already heard back from
en:wp editors - those comments are totally valid and must be taken into
account in any future iteration of the program. At the same time, I feel we
also need to hear the perspectives and voices of those who worked on the
program in any capacity.

Cheers

Hey Sue,

I used 'were' not because I think IEP and yes, thanks, GEP :) are dead -
but to point out how they 'were' conceived.

Anyway, it's great that you clarified this, given the thread's title.

At this stage, we're hearing much more about what didn't work, so it's hard
to assess the pilot meaningfully.

hours poring over all of them before my eyes started glazing.

I read this talk page [1] from top to bottom - it was particularly useful
in seeing how the whole copyvio issue started, then grew bigger and bigger.

Apart from the content, I was struck by:
*the helpful, purposive and constructive suggestions and analysis from
editors
*a general absence of combativeness or baiting
*an overall openness to feedback and responsiveness on the part of the
India Education Program team

The statistical discussion on this talk page [2] was very useful to get a
sense of the magnitude of the problem.

It looks like many of the suggestions made on these pages have directly
been incorporated into the learnings page at [3] - this is an excellent
step.

There are so many good points on all these pages, such a willingness to
help strengthen the program, and so much openness to doing so, that I now
feel more hopeful for the future.

about Nitika's editing prowess. So your comment strikes me as irrelevant -

I also feel that comments like these have a strong effect on those whom
they name thus - they silence them. Specially when they are relatively new

difficult and somewhat hostile thread. And they silence others who may have
spoken out.

So while applauding Nitika for sharing her views in this space, I also want

At the same time, I very much appreciate your efforts to help and nurture

Totally agree with you, Bala.

I've been cc-d on a couple of these emails and unfortunately, people who
are famous in their fields, do seem to feel they are above examination. The
attitude that sometimes comes across is this: "How dare anyone write
negatively about me!" (Regardless of the facts of the situ).

So if we whitewash negative information in these situations, knowledge and
neutrality are the first casualties.

Dear Gerard,

I am intrigued by this, yet struggling to understand what you mean here.

Do you mean that many educated people can speak their own language, but not
read or write it? (because they communicate in English instead). If so,
that is probably true - but is that what you mean?

For example, my mother tongue is Bengali - I speak it much more than I read
or write it (even though I can read and write in Bengali), since I usually
read and write in English. However, there are many people in India who have
the opposite experience eg who not just speak, but also read and write in
indic languages.

So I feel like there may be three or more categories of persons for each
language:

-Speakers who read and write in that lang
-Speakers who don't read and write in that lang (non or low users)
-Speakers who don't know how to read and write in that lang (illiterate,
although I don't like the word)

And agree with Ravi that it would be hard to get both those who are not
literate in a language or low users of it to contribute in that language.
For example, I would be reluctant to contribute in the languages I speak,
but don't write or read in everyday, even though I am technically literate
in them.

Suneet Singh Tuli, the founder of Datawind, spoke about this at TEDxGateway
in Mumbai on Sunday, and expressed a personal interested in providing free
Aakash tablets for 'developmental' purposes. (He's verbally committed 500
free tablets to another Indian non-profit I know).

He lives in Canada; it may be worth talking to him too.

Also, seconding Gautam's idea: can the chapter and trust speak to each

to take this forward? (Working together never a bad idea, imho).

The 2012 Wiki Loves Monuments competition will become global next year, and
I'd like to ask how many countries in Asia intend to participate in Wiki
Loves Monuments. During Wikimania last August, a pan-Asian Wiki Loves
Monuments-style contest was proposed as a common project of the Asian
communities, and with the global competition, I think we can focus our
efforts on the global competition instead. However, we can have something
like an "Asia's Best Picture" award or something like that.

Wikimedia Philippines had expressed interest in organizing a local Wiki
Loves Monuments competition next year during GLAMcamp Amsterdam, and I hope
other Asian chapters and communities will likewise be interested in doing
the same thing. Information on next year's competition may be found at
http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2012.

Regards,

Josh

+1. Excellent analysis, very meticulous.

Particularly like the way you broke down community building into the
various sub-parts (below) and detailed what each entails, and the
understanding that now that confirmed readership exists, the need is to
build the communities/projects to ensure readers keep coming back.

Good luck with the next pilot phase,

This is really a shame. Did they specify under what law they were doing
this?

Since these situations are cropping up on photo walks, here are some
ground-level suggestions for individual volunteers or groups embarking on
these:

1)Familiarize yourself with 'photo restrictions' in your city/state: These
may differ, and none of us know all the restrictions in each state - maybe
a news photographer or someone could be asked in advance, since we seem to
have good media contacts in India in general? (Tinu or anyone else: do you
think there is someone who could help provide this info? We are all
ignorant here. Individuals would feel more confident if they knew whether
or not what they are doing is illegal.)

2)Stand your ground to the extent possible: Keep asking which law is being
applied if any police action - charging with a case, arrest, confiscation -
is brought up. I know this is very very hard to do when faced with police
personnel, but still. The police are less likely to bully someone who can
firmly ask questions - and who does not get intimidated by the law.

3)Create a chain of 'help': Call another wikipedian for help - if there are
2-3 or more wikipedians present, divide up tasks, so that one-two people
can engage the cops while another makes phone calls. When Pranav called me,
I in turn called lawyer friends who clarified that P&Co were not breaking
the law. I then felt more confident to ask them to 'stand their ground'.

4)Cultivate contacts with media, including photographers, who may have this
information or lawyers in your city who can help with this information
(including legal students).

This is not meant to imply that no larger help is needed - it's not an
either/or, and institutional support may be needed in some cases. These are
just small suggestions to empower individual on the spot.

Did propose an editing workshop for women in March at Akshara in Mumbai
(women's library), after Pranav and I met with them in late Feb - but dates
not working out. That will probably now spill to April, am on top of it.

Ok, will take the bait and write offlist to all the women editors I know in
India, past and present, including those who were there at the gender gap
session at the wikiconference, and see if we can come up with something
doable for March that also meets this need - online or offline.

More soon, hopefully :)

brilliant!

I found it interesting, useful, timely - and the layout is easy to navigate
(specially the community news section, with each language community as a
separate tab). And of course, it's only when you see it all in the same
place that you realize the huge amount of work that is happening in India.

[Wikimediaindia-l] Fwd: [Wikimedia Announcements] Announcing 2 Community Fellows

2012-05-20 Thread Bishakha Datta
Forwarding to this list, since one of the fellowships relates to
Bangla/Bengali wikipedia.

And congratulations, Tanvir! Am very interested in seeing how this develops.

Subject: [Wikimedia Announcements] Announcing 2 Community Fellows
To: wikimediaannounc...@lists.wikimedia.org

It is my great pleasure to introduce two new Community Fellows in the
Wikimedia Fellows Program: Tanvir Rahman and Steven Zhang.

Tanvir Rahman is a Wikimedian who serves the movement locally and
globally, both on- and off-wiki. Tanvir has been an active editor of
Bengali Wikipedia since 2009, he holds administrator rights on
multiple projects and he was elected a steward in 2011. He also
volunteers on the Small Wiki Monitoring Team, the Countervandalism
Network, as an OTRS agent, and is a translator for translatewiki.
Tanvir helped found Wikimedia Bangladesh and organizes local outreach
activities to raise awareness for Wikimedia and bring new editors to
the projects.

In his fellowship project, Tanvir will be experimenting with on-wiki
strategies to encourage and grow the editing community on small
language versions of Wikipedia, with specific focus on the Bengali
Wikipedia. Smaller projects have different needs and challenges than
the large language communities and may require different approaches to
engage with editors. By focusing on a community like Bengali
Wikipedia, which has about 50 active editors per month and sees 10 new
editors per month, Tanvir hopes to learn more about the basic editing
infrastructure needed to encourage new editors in new or small-scale
projects.

Steven Zhang is a Wikipedian with a passion for resolving on-wiki
disputes and helping others do the same. He has been contributing to
the English Wikipedia since 2008 and has been particularly active in
dispute resolution forums, including the Wikipedia Mediation Cabal.
Steven is studying a Certificate IV in Mediation at Open Colleges, and
over the past year he has made it his mission as a volunteer to
recruit more editors to join dispute resolution efforts. In 2011, he
helped create the dispute resolution notice board, an entry point for
mediating disputes on the English Wikipedia. Steven has noted that
there aren’t enough active participants to resolve all of the disputes
that arise on Wikipedia each day, and he believes that dispute
resolution processes could be streamlined to make them more accessible
and efficient to all editors who need them.

For his fellowship project, Steven will be analyzing community
feedback and dispute resolution activity in order to build a deeper
understanding of what is effective and what needs improvement in the
current systems. He will also be developing a guide for new editors
who want to get involved in resolving on-wiki disputes.

Steven and Tanvir will be documenting their work on-wiki and on the
Foundation blog. You can learn more about their projects and how to
get involved by visiting:
http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Fellowships/Fellows

Welcome, Tanvir and Steven!

Pradeep's post brought up some immediate and broader questions for me,
which I've put up on his blog.

Also reproducing them here, simply because I don't think we should
under-estimate what his post means. That someone who was such an integral
part of the Mumbai and India community and the wikimedia movement feels
despairing enough to retire - over the 'politicking' - is not a good sign.

*Reporting*
*How can we ensure that such reports are based on consensus, so that those
who've been vital parts of such community events do not later feel
alienated by the reporting?

*How can we ensure that such reports represent the perspectives of many of
those involved in such events, rather than a singular perspective? One way
to do so is to involve all 'teams' in writing their parts of the report -
eg Scholarships, Programs etc, getting internal consensus within each team,
and then providing it to the core team.

*How can we ensure that such reports are constructive, rather than
destructive, in their criticism, and steer clear of name calling or
singling out individuals?

*How can we ensure that such reports 'look forward' to helping future
community teams that organize such conferences, rather than backwards at
pinpointing perceived errors of omission and commission?

*How can we ensure that such reports have a helpful problem-solution
approach, eg "this was the problem, this was how we fixed it" to supplement
the documentation of processes leading up to an event? That would really
help future teams.

*Broader*
*How can we retain the sense of fun that is so much part of - and integral
to - a volunteer movement?

*How can we create a sense of togetherness, a sense that we're all working
towards the same shared goals?

*How can we ask the tough questions that are needed to make constituents
accountable to a larger community while ensuring that we are not unduly
politicking or undermining trust in the process? And how do we know when
enough is enough, that it's time to stop?

Many other questions, but I'll stop here for now. I forgot to put some of
these up on the blog, they occurred to me while I was writing this.

Best
Bishakha

Hey, I'm never in favour of whitewashing, ignoring or turning a blind eye
to shortcomings - but it is important to be constructive in giving feedback
and to take personal responsibility as well. I'm totally in favour of all
that, as is evident from my questions. Certainly not advocating 'no
reporting'; I'm in favour of strengthening the reporting.

If, as Srikanth suggests, others who worked on WCI 2011 write in with their
comments and suggestions, this would help greatly in analysing what worked,
what didn't, and what we can carry with us to the next conf.

Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] Farewell

2012-07-30 Thread Bishakha Datta
Dear Hisham,

I’m thinking back on your time here and want to thank you for so much that
you’ve done and built in these one and a half years. For setting up things
from scratch when there was neither a team nor an office and you were on
your own. For building and motivating a small team to venture into unknown
terrain (and for even daring to step into this terrain) without any
surefire guarantee of success. For tirelessly and successfully supporting
many Indic language wikipedias and the first-ever community-led
WikiConference India. For keeping up team morale in the difficult days
following the India Education program. For reaching out to hundreds of
people in India through any means necessary to create new editors. And,
yes, for being bold.

One of the things that makes this kind of work difficult is not just its
newness or its experimental unsure nature, but also its publicness.
Brickbats pour in much faster than bouquets in public fora, creating a
narrative of their own that is hard to buck. I want to thank you for being
able to smell the roses, for having a tough enough hide to survive the
brickbats while continuing to steer India programs and motivating your team
to do its best. I also want to urge the Wikimedia India community to be
constructive and rigorous in holding India programs accountable in its next
avatar - without being destructive or personal.

You’ve laid a very solid foundation for India programs that I expect the
team will continue to build on. I hope you enjoy your remaining time here
and leave with many more good memories than bad.

Will miss you, my friend!

[Wikimediaindia-l] Fwd: Meeting to plan wiki workshop for women - Sunday 16 Sept

2012-09-14 Thread Bishakha Datta

From: Bishakha Datta

Subject: Meeting to plan wiki workshop for women - Sunday 16 Sept
To: Mumbai List Wikimedia

Dear all,

Sorry for the short notice, but was trying to get enough women editors from
Mumbai involved and find a venue - both are on track now, so this can
happen.

Am writing to invite the Mumbai wp community to an informal meeting Sunday
16 Sept to plan a wiki academy or workshop for women in Mumbai.

Here is where I am coming from: In my day job, I run a non-profit called Point
of View <http://www.pointofview.org>, which promotes the points of view of
women through media, art and culture. In this capacity and others, I
routinely come across women, including other NGOs working with women, and
with women bloggers and others active on social media. Many of them have
expressed a tentative interest in editing wikipedia, but are stuck at this
place. Pranav and I visited one such org in Mumbai earlier this year, but
it's too time-consuming going org by org.

Instead, I propose that we start with an introductory workshop for
interested individuals/organizations and then perhaps follow up with those
who are more interested...hoping to do the introductory workshop sometime
in November. And hoping that each of you can similarly invite interested
women to the Nov workshop.

This is a working meeting devoted to planning this workshop. If you would
like to be part of it and help reduce the gender gap at wikipedia, please
do come!

The meeting will be held at 4 pm on Sunday 16 Sept at Pinstorm's office
(many thanks, Netra for offering us this facility).
*Pinstorm, Swati Bldg,
North Avenue,
Santa Cruz (W)
Bombay 400 054

A warm welcome to you on the Wikimedia India mailing list,
Bishakha -
great to have you here.

Text of message from Foundation-l:

As many of you know, we have had one vacant seat left on the
Wikimedia
Foundation Board of Trustees for the board to appoint. We have now
filled that seat by appointing Bishakha Datta, a journalist,
filmmaker,
and nonprofit leader from India. In the course of finding
Bishakha, we
met with a number of great people and had a lot of support
going through
the process, and I want to thank everyone who participated.

I hope everyone will warmly welcome Bishakha as part of our
community.
By way of background, Bishakha runs a nonprofit based in
Mumbai that
focuses on conveying women's perspectives in culture and the
media. She
also has been involved in other international nonprofit work,
and her
knowledge of India should be a great help to us as we move
forward with
the strategic plan. In general, her experience will be a
wonderful asset
and I think she is an ideal fit for the remaining board seat.

In a bit of an ironic twist, Bishakha's organization is called
Point of
View, but rest assured that she understands and endorses the
neutral
point of view approach for Wikimedia projects. Her journalistic
background means she appreciates the value of an objective
presentation,
and throughout our conversations with her it was clear that
she supports
our mission and values.

We will have an official press release in the next day or so
with some
more information. I'm excited to be able to work with
Bishakha, and I
know that she is looking forward to being involved as well.

[Wikimediaindia-l] Fwd: [Foundation-l] Living Person Task Force: Phase Two

To: Wikimedia Foundation Mailing List

Hello, Wikimedians.

This weekend I plan on finalizing the timeline for phase two of the Living
Person Task Force: a community findings recommendation.

What we are interested in is people from all size wikis participating in
discussing common interests and problems on interpersonal and intrapersonal
interaction relating to Wikimedia projects. This includes statistics
gathering, examination of how projects handle OTRS complaints/issues, image
use, quotation use, and sourcing. It is very important that we get
participation in these areas, if anything just to received feedback on the
wiki. I have subpages set up for these discussion on the Strategy site, <
http://strategy.wikimedia.org/wiki/Task_force/Living_People>.

In six to eight weeks we'd like to develop recommendations from the Task
Force that are more in-depth than the proposed recommendations to be passed
by the Board this month, to assist in developing projects identify and set
up structures for the issues that come with societies.

If you have experience dealing with living people on any of our wikis, or if
you have ideas on how policies can be established/improved, please
participate in the discussions so that we can adequately asses the projects
as a whole.

Thanks for your time, see you on the wiki!

Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] Wikipedia Bangalore Meet-up April 11, 2010

2010-04-13 Thread Bishakha Datta
You are more generous than me in forgiving the DNA reporter for saying
dictionary for what the whole world knows is an encyclopedia.:)

I feel the following misquotes/inaccuracies are somewhat damaging:
*para 2 - which make it sound as if I am claiming leadership in India,
setting up the office and the chapter, when I'm doing neither - and said so
repeatedly.
*last para - the fictional quote on 'Malayalam articles having more depth.'
I don't recall anyone saying this, let alone me.

Media coverage will only intensify with each step: the formation of the
chapter, etc etc. The problem with this kind of misreporting is that it
makes others wary, and wrongly credits an individual (that too the wrong
individual) for a collective effort. Just want to flag this to ensure there
is no ill-feeling among us.

For now, media attention is focused on me for obvious reasons. But in due
course, it would be good for more and more Wikipedians - including those who
are active on the proposed chapter formation - to start talking more and
more to media, so that many voices represent wikipedia in India. I tried to
do this to some extent at the Sun meeting by redirecting questions to Achal,
Arun, and others...but they still attributed the stuff to me.

There's only so many times I can apologize for what is not my error...if
anybody has any thoughts on how this coverage can be improved (apart from
letters to editor, which can only be done once so often), do share.

Best
Bishakha

Forwarded this to the board list, and got two more personal opinions

Also, please keep in mind that these are personal opinions, no more or less.

I am quite concerned about the kinds of issues that Ravi raises, and
believe that machine translation is, on net, more likely to be harmful than
helpful to most communities. Bishakha, you may want to wait before posting

[Wikimediaindia-l] Fwd: [Foundation-l] Wikimania 2010: Call for Participation is there!

2010-04-28 Thread Bishakha Datta

Subject: [Foundation-l] Wikimania 2010: Call for Participation is there!
To: foundatio...@lists.wikimedia.org

Wikimania is an annual global event devoted to Wikimedia projects
around the globe (including Wikipedia, Wikibooks, Wikinews,
Wiktionary, Wikispecies, Wikimedia Commons, and MediaWiki). The
conference is a community gathering, giving the editors, users
and developers of Wikimedia projects an opportunity to meet each
other, exchange ideas, report on research and projects, and
collaborate on the future of the projects. The conference is open
to the public, and is a chance for educators, researchers,
programmers and free culture activists who are interested in the
Wikimedia projects to learn more and share ideas about the
Wikimedia projects.

This year's conference will be held JULY 9-11, 2010 in Gdansk,
Poland at Polish Baltic Philharmonic. For more information, please
visit the official Wikimania 2010 site:

http://wikimania2010.wikimedia.org/

Wikimania 2010 will be a mix of submitted talks, open space
meetings, birds of a feather groups, and lightning talks.
Submissions will be discussed and selected in an informal process
on the wiki. If your submission is not added to the schedule, you
will still have many opportunities to bring topics forward
on-site.

IMPORTANT DATES

* Deadline for submitting workshop, tutorial, panel and
  presentation proposals: May 20
* Notification of acceptance: May 25 (workshops), May 31
  (panels, tutorials, presentations)
* All proposals and presentations will be welcome in the
Open Space track of the conference, whether or not they
are accepted in this initial process.

PROGRAM COMMITTEE

Submissions will be reviewed informally by a team of volunteers.

TRACKS

This year Wikimania will offer three tracks for submissions for
members of wiki communities and interested observers to share
their own experiences and thoughts and to present new ideas:

People and Community

The People and Community track provides a unique forum for
discussing topics related to people using/building wikis.
Relevant topics include, but are not restricted to, the
following:

* Wiki Community: Conflict resolution and community dynamics;
  reputation and identity;
* Wiki Outreach: Promotion of wikis and Wikimedia projects among
  the general public;
* North meets south, east meets west: How can people of a
different cultural background create an encyclopedia according
to common rules? Same subject in the eye of different cultures.
* Special: Wikipedia in Central/Eastern Europe: this theme will
provide a forum to present and discuss the latest progress of
Wikis in the central/eastern European community.

Knowledge and Collaboration

The Knowledge and Collaboration track aims to promote research
and find exciting ideas related to knowledge...

* Wiki Content: New ways to improve content quality, credibility;
legal issues and copyrights (is free knowledge free?); use of
  the content in education, journalism, research;
* Semantic Wikis: The use of semantic web technologies, linked
data; semantic annotation and metadata (in particular manual
  vs. automated approaches).

Infrastructure Track

The Infrastructure track at Wikimania will provide a forum where
both researchers and practitioners can share new approaches,
applications, and explore how to make Wiki access ever more
ubiquitous:

* MediaWiki development: issues related to MediaWiki development
  and extensions;
* Moving beyond MediaWiki: what other Wiki-like platforms exist;
what tools and features do we need for collaboration on
  different types of knowledge?
* Mobile Wikis: The Web is moving off the desktop and into mobile
phones, how we use wikis on mobile devices?; wiki-based
Augmented Reality (AR) applications, location based services
* User Interface Design: Usability and user experience;
accessibility, adaptive interfaces and personalization; novel
  UI designs.

WIKISYM 2010

Please note that Wikimania 2010 is co-located with WikiSym, The
International Symposium on Wikis and Open Collaboration. More
information about WikiSym can be found on the conference website:

http://www.wikisym.org/

SUBMIT A PROPOSAL

To submit a proposal for a presentation, workshop, panel or
tutorial, please visit:

http://bit.ly/Submit2010

Thank you for helping make Wikimania 2010 a successful event. :-)
See you in Gdansk, July 9-11!

[Wikimediaindia-l] Fwd: Wikimedia's community department is hiring

2010-07-18 Thread Bishakha Datta
http://wikimediafoundation.org/wiki/Special:CommunityHiring

*Deadline for first round of submissions: 9:00 PDT (17:00 GMT), August 2.*
(Another round will begin immediately with a new deadline.)

Go to the Job openings
page for positions
in other departments.

The Wikimedia Foundation's Community Department collaborates with and serves
the broad Wikimedia community -- including readers, donors and
editors/contributors -- to encourage the health and growth of Wikimedia
communities and the projects they create and manage.

This year, the Community Department will be hiring for a series of important
senior and entry level positions. All positions will involve collaborating
and communicating with Wikimedia project contributors and users intensively
and publicly, grappling with many problems that no one has ever solved
before, navigating technological and social challenges and opportunities,
and dealing with a high level of complexity and uncertainty. Candidates
should have extremely high levels of skill and comfort in communication
(especially writing), qualitative and quantitative analysis, management and
self-management. Candidates who are not already deeply immersed in online
collaborative communities will have to show an aptitude for quickly gaining
a deep understanding of our communities' technologies, practices, traditions
and culture -- and to become trusted and productive members of the Wikimedia
community and movement.

We are looking for candidates from all over the world. Wikimedia Foundation
has a policy of hiring without regard to locale. If eventually accepted for
a position, Wikimedia Foundation will assist with work visas and relocation
costs.

Read more about what we're looking for below. If you think you'd be a good
match for the Community Department, use the form below to tell us about
yourself. This is not a formal application, it is the first step in an
outreach process designed to identify some great candidates for Wikimedia
Foundation positions.

Your information will be kept completely confidential and will only be
viewed by hiring managers, human resources staff and possibly assisting
consultants who are covered by confidentiality agreements. Because we have
such a small staff, we cannot guarantee a response. Submitted data will not
be retained for longer than a year. Besides the data below, we are also
recording the timestamp and your IP address at the time of submission.

*Who we're looking for*

We are especially looking for:

   - Current Wikimedia community contributors and leaders,
   - Insightful observers of Wikimedia and other collaborative communities,
   - People with specialty skill sets (e.g. statistics, ethnography, and
probably a lot other things we've never thought of),
   - People belonging to language communities of new and growing Wikipedias
   and other Wikimedia projects,
   - People with insight into reaching groups currently underrepresented in
   Wikimedia contributor communities.

Ideal candidates for positions at Wikimedia Foundation's Community
Department:

   - Have a passion for online communities, self-organizing systems, open
and collaborative enterprises, democratic and consensus based societies, and
emergent and participatory governance structures -- and desperately want to
see them succeed and prove the cynics wrong.
   - Have thought enough about this stuff to have their own opinions and
theories on various problems and opportunities facing Wikimedia and other
   online communities.
   - Are equally strong dealing with qualitative and quantitative knowledge
   and research.
   - Are self-directed, self-motivated, efficient, upbeat, optimistic, and
extremely good with people. Wikimedia Foundation staff face intense
pressures in highly-demanding roles. While the Wikimedia Foundation team
strives to be mutually supportive, it only works when each individual is
self-driven to overcome the challenges they face.
   - Are knowledgeable about software development processes and with
   database and web technologies.
   - Are creative non-linear thinkers who will sometimes fight for seemingly
crazy ideas by backing them up with logical argument and data.
   - Are systems-thinkers who love to think about workflow and technology
   systems inside organizations.
   - Are multilingual, especially in major world languages and languages
   with large or growing Wikipedias.
   - Have insights and experience reaching groups currently underrepresented
   in Wikimedia communities.

[Wikimediaindia-l] Fwd: [Foundation-l] Kicking off the 2010-2011 fundraiser

[[Please distribute widely to various language communities, projects,
and chapters]]

Hi All,

I'd like to begin a conversation about the 2010-2011 Fundraiser, which
isn't slated to launch for a few months, but for which we'd like to
get community involvement early and often. As you no doubt are aware,
the strategic plan calls for the "many small gifts" model to be the
centerpiece of our funding strategy, so our community fundraiser is
one of the key methods by which we finance and underwrite the
operations of the projects. The fundraiser this year will probably,
as in earlier years, be primarily banner driven. We're going to have
a strong emphasis on testing and iterating ideas, with a defined
methodological testing plan.

But the most important part of what we - all of us - are going to need
to do is what this community has always been good at: thinking,
researching, and iterating.

With that in mind, it's important to identify people who want to
help. Of course, anyone's welcome to join in and help at any time,
but there's a definite need for people who are willing to be deeply
involved from now to the wrap up... people who want to be creative but
rigorous, innovative but willing to learn from the past, and most of
all, to serve as an active part of the team working on this
fundraiser. There will, of course, be Foundation staff deeply
involved in this, but there's a real need for people from the
community to step up and help us design this thing.

If you're willing to help, would you add your name to
http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Fundraising_2010/Committee
? We'll be in contact - soon - to get things started.

Thanks,
Philippe

Please do be in touch directly with Prof Vijay Chitnis (
simplystrate...@gmail.com) if anyone would like to follow up on this. He is
not a member of this list.

Prof Chitnis: as discussed, I am forwarding this to the India list. Will
also send separately to the Marathi wikipedia list and connect you with some
Marathi editors.

Cheers

[Wikimediaindia-l] Speaking at CSI annual convention

2010-11-21 Thread Bishakha Datta
Dear all,

I am speaking at the Computer Society of India's annual convention on Friday
in Mumbai in the ienterprise track. The programme is at:
http://www.csi-2010.org/cnvntnprog.html

My presentation is tentatively titled:
Edit by Edit: Wikipedia, Indic Languages and Free Knowledge Creation

I am working on this presentation this week, using WMF's decks which board
members often use - and a pile of material from the newsletter (thanks
again, all who worked on this - very very useful) and many emails that I've
saved from this list.

If anyone has any thoughts that you feel it is important for me to include
in my presentation, do email me offlist.

Cheers

[Wikimediaindia-l] Fwd: Your session at Filmi Chashma Workshop

2010-11-24 Thread Bishakha Datta
Speaking at this tomorrow; came up suddenly. Apart from all else it does,
Comet Media Foundation is developing GNUKhata, a free and flexible software
for accounting and inventory management. See
http://www.cometmedia.org/gnukhata

I am in touch with a couple of Pune wikipedians to see if they could do the
Dec workshop in Pune referred to below.

Dear Bishakha

This is further to our telephone talk on Saturday regarding the Filmi
Chashma Workshop for school teachers. Please have a look at
www.filmichashma.org for an overview of the project

To go over the workshop requirements:

Your session, scheduled 2.00 to 3.30pm on Thursday 25 Nov, will be on
" Intro to the phenomenon of the wiki world, finding what you need in
the wiki world and contributing what you know back to it." Beyond the
utility of it please bring out the philosophy, the altruism and
self-correcting mechanisms and all the things that make it an
authentic upto-the-moment encyclopedia. Please also encourage them and
their students to contribute to it, particularly in Indian languages.
A visit to teh Hindi and Marathi wikipedias would be good.

Plus we want you to please address another similar meeting in Pune on
17 Dec at 11.45 to 1.15. Please tell me if you are free to make a
trip.

The venue as you know, is in the conference room on 6th floor of the
Times of India Building opposite VT station.

Thank you and looking forward to an exciting time!

Yes - Kartik had then suggested that Wikimedia India meet with Ratilal
Chandaria of http://www.gujaratilexicon.com/ who is based in Mumbai to
discuss this further.

Also, discussed possible next steps to advocate with the Maharashtra and
Karnataka governments about digitizing the 19-volume Marathi vishwakosh or
encyclopedia and the Kannada encyclopedia under open licences. (Hari talked
about efforts that have been taken so far with the Kannada encyclopedia.)

In this context, am also forwarding to the list a voluminous email from the
Observer Research Foundation, which is interested in collaborating on
boosting Marathi wikipedia.
