Hi,
Is your generator a "computer friendly" type? We have both a Honda and
Yamaha 1000 generators that deliver clean power (you can plug
electronics into them directly without problems). Those will charge the
UPS. The other thing we did was hook up a 5 gallon gas can with fuel
line directly t

Thanks Travis. I know that the Coleman is not 'computer-friendly' but I haven't
had a problem yet with it powering our equipment...just the problem with the
UPS.
How'd you rig you gas can...that IS the big problem with these smaller-wattage
generators is the tank size. Got photos?

Hi,
We just took the side panels off and got the size of fuel line we
needed. We went to Ace Hardware and purchased 4 feet of hose and a
connector. We just unhooked the line from the existing tank and hooked
it to the line going into the 5 gallon can. We put a couple flat
washers on the bottom
(Don't respond George...if they like pimping gas so much we've got some jobs
here for them!). I grew up in L.A. I have to say there's no gas pump I'M in

Try adjusting the frequency (speed) of the generator. This may get it to

I'm a little confused here. I'm working on a 300 ft run of cat5 and
have a question. The radio is acting sparatic. The power supply has
already been upped from a 18v to a 24v. Both 1 amp. Will it hurt to
put a 24v 2 amp power supply in? If I "over do" on amps or volts, what
blows a radio.
Mark,
I have used a 6 gallon portable gas tank that is normally used with a
small outboard boat motor. You can purchase from a boat dealer and it
even included a fuel gauge in the filler cap. Works like a charm. Just
make sure that you position the can above the engine.

Brian,
I'm normally a lurker, but maybe your problem is in the 300' run of CAT5.
What kind is it? You may be getting signal degradation which is causing the
sporadic radio behavior.

It's not actually mine. It's another's from the list. We were talking
about it. But I am sure that on my 230 ft run of cat 5 that I had to
replace an 18v 1a with an 18v 2a to get the radio to stop rebooting.

Increasing the Voltage beyond the specifications will kill the radio.
Putting a higher power - (current) PSU shouldn't hurt the radio. The radio
will 'draw' the needed current only.

Well, I'm still at the point where the money in my checkbook is worth
more than my time. I guess I can get 6 of the others and tolerate the
noise and run around with fuel. 6 sites with backup is better than one
"fancy" one.

Lets exaggerate here. I can plug a billion amps in and it will only

A caveat with higher current capacity power supplies (esp. replacing one
kind of battery chemistry with another) is their internal impedence
characteristics may vary, and if the electronics being run assume a certain
impendence, things may go awry. A specific case is replacing alkaline

That is correct. Now if you use a 10 amp supply and only need 2 amps and
there is a short up top there is a good chance you will burn your cat 5

You apply a potential when you connect something (a voltage). You don't
apply a current.
Neither voltage nor current kill most things. There are a few kinds of
things that are voltage sensitive but not typically found on the in
