from the vortexbox forums, it seems that going to a USB disk for
storage adds lots of complexity (although is possible and there are
posts on how to do it). the standard install is assuming an INTERNAL
HD.

The vortexbox forums are good and several people there are VERY
helpful, including Ron Olson, who also posts here.
