Looking at a few of the posts there, they are mostly about backups.
Further, many seem to have serious problems with USB discs as backups
(with people quoting commands I've not yet encountered to get it all to
work), let alone as the main drive.

I think I'll have to give up on this whole idea.  It all looks far too
hard.

The time may come when I may have to revert to pieces of plastic with a
needle.

Server on Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit, 2 CPU, 2GHz, 4GB, FLAC files. Touch
on Ethernet (in another room).  Analogue out over 'a bit of wire' to
ageing Quad Hi-Fi. An old (wireless) laptop controls the server using
Chrome.
