If anyone has an old Armstrong TR21-12 shroud (cover) laying around
please
let me know. We've been looking for one for about 3 yrs. now. I just
can't
see paying $300 for one from A/S parts place. The thing is so old, it
would
be my luck it would go out if I paid that much for it. I would be
willing
to pay you a resonable price plus shipping of course. We would be most
grateful.

This is a very nice link that will answer a lot of questions about our
Airstream trailers, when they came out, who owned the company and so
much more. Thought I'd share this one with the group.

I use Eudora to read the mail. I click the link and IE pops right up with

Subject: Re: UNIVOLT Question
Hello, new member here. I have a '67 Overlander with non-functioning power
converter. Newmark 40 is in there now, and it will not charge battery when on
city power or from tow vehicle. A series of fuses are inside an access door,
and I would guess they act like the low voltage distribution panel when the
trailer was new. I can detect power coming into the converter from the 120v
panel in the back of the trailer, but no power comes out. Question is, would
anyone know why the blue wire from trailer/tow vehicle plug and situated in
the roadside door access area, next to the battery, has been blocked off? It
is a thick guage wire that runs through a 50 amp fuse and looks like it
should connect directly to the battery. I have seen a tech bulletin from Oct
1966 that outlines converting from a Newmark 30 to the Airstream Univolt 2,
and they say to "obsolete the blue wire"???-but how does the battery get
power from the tow vehicle? Any guesses. Thanks-really enjoy the tips and
experiences on this mail list. Mike Hall, '67 Overlander.

Someone was looking for a way to tighten the screws on the hinges of upper
cabinets. I have a couple of right angle screwdrivers that will work in this
application. I've had them for years, so I don't know where I got them, but
you could easily make one by bending an inexpensive screwdriver. I've also
seen, somewhere, and I probably have one, somewhere, a tiny ratched with two
little screwdriver ends sticking out at right angles. This would also work,
maybe at Sears.

I faced the same problem...I finally discovered that the local
'ex-'airstream dealer has a bone yard of old airstream parts. Although
they are no longer an official dealership they are the only place in
central AR with any airstream experience. Over the years, they pitched
various parts into a warehouse. After I got my Armstrong 'fixed' (it was
a matter of discovering that the thermostat had 3 positions: heat, off
AND cool!), I started asking where I might find a new shroud. "Oh, I
don't know where you might find one", "Maybe one of the generic ones
would fit", etc, etc. After about the 3rd or 4th excuse, someone said, "I
really doubt there's one there, but we should check our old parts
warehouse...". In a matter of minutes we selected 3 used shroud
candidates, all were in better shape than mine. I don't know why they
were so reluctant to go in there, maybe because they wanted to sell me a
new one. In any case I got it for $20.
I then took both apart (The bottom of the original was in better shape,
but the top was smashed to smitherines) and reassembled the best of the
two. As Roy suggests, I reinforced the corners with fiberglass, except I
applied the 'glass to the outside. Gave it a good sanding, primered and
painted it with silver paint, polished up the Al "chrome" trim, and I was
back in business. If you can get one for $300, you might want to consider
what your time is worth...I spent roughly $40-50 for materials
(fiberglass, resin, sandpaper, rivets, solvents, primer, paint) + 8-10
hrs labor + 2-3 hrs figuring out what to do. But it ain't rocket science,
if you can get a break and find a shroud.
Good Luck,

Oh, Bill
Are you going to have fun!
We've also got the 1969 International Ambassador 29' model and we've
gone over it from top to bottom. Now however, it's the copper water
lines that need attention. We still have the original 10 gallon water
heater and the Armstrong airconditioner installed. We did replace the
old Dometic with a Norcold 8 cubic foot fridge and I also installed a
new china toilet made by SeaLand I think is the name. And lots of other
nice finishing touches to the walnut interior, awnings all the way
around except THIS time I'd go with Zip Dee awnings and *not* A & E
simply because the quality of the Zip Dee is so much better.
Got pictures of your new to you unit?

IMHO: if this book is printed by Chronicle books,
$17.50 is probably right (or high) for the quality of

of course to many of us, the content is invaluable.

I can answer about the polish on my trailer. I go over it yearly by hand,
using a polish called Prestige Pro 4.0 which I have been obtaining at the

all day at it either. Fairly painless.
