 Thanks for
 the reply Marina. I am checking the modes, testing on an
 Xperia Z5 Premium, and there are 2 modes: 1080p and 4k. It
 was working pretty well on Android M, but on the N update
 it's scaling the whole phone UI to 4k and the whole
 phone interface is messed up. Not the app UI, but the whole
 phone, I don't see the bottom navigation bar for
 example, and the status bar fills 1/4 of the screen with the
 time, network and wifi icons. I have no idea why it's
 doing that (or even if it's supposed to be doing
 that).

In this case what would be the best scenario for testing if activities
exist to handle intents while on an emulator. If you use PackageManager to

be included.

[android-developers] Browser SSL trust issues.

2016-06-08 Thread Ryan Handby
Hi guys I was wondering if anyone could shed some light on the following
issue:

Having trouble getting Android to trust a custom Root CA and Intermediate
CA. I am installing them programatically with an app using:

This seems to be working fine as it prompts the user to install both of the
certificates and they are added to the Trust Store (removed names for
privacy reasons).

When opening a site that is using them in Chrome on the android device it
doesn't trust the certificates.

This same set of certificates however work on mac, windows and ubuntu
without any issues to connect to the same endpoint.
I am beginning to think it could be device related so I will test on some
other Android devices.

Happy to provide any additional information if it will aid in getting to
the bottom of this.

[android-developers] URLs to whitelist?

2016-05-16 Thread Ryan Young
Hello,

Our organization uses a palo alto firewall and we have SSL decryption
enabled. It seems that the android SDK does not play nicely with SSL
decryption. In order to allow our users to use the SDK, I need a list of
known URL's that the application might try to connect to. Anyone have a
complete list please?

[android-developers] Get error message "invalid value" when calling in-app purchase revoke API

2016-04-23 Thread Ryan Liu
Hi there,

Recently we want to cancel a bunch of in-app purchase subscriptions so that
these subscriptions will not be renewed anymore.

As a result, we follow the instruction
at
https://developers.google.com/android-publisher/api-ref/purchases/subscriptions/revoke#request.

We form a get API call, syntax is like
https://www.googleapis.com/androidpublisher/v2/applications/packageName/purchases/subscriptions/subscriptionId/tokens/token?access_token=refresh_token

and yes it can return the order basic detail.

The we form a revoke API call, syntax is like
https://www.googleapis.com/androidpublisher/v2/applications/packageName/purchases/subscriptions/subscriptionId/tokens/token:revoke?access_token=refresh_token

then error message "invalid value" has returned.

Anyone knows how to deal with the revoke API call? Many thanks for any
hints.

Thanks,
Ryan

[android-developers] Connect app to smart meter

2016-02-13 Thread Ryan Illes

I am working on a app that keeps track of how many electricity and gas your
house uses , how many km your car uses and all the things that cause
greenhouse gases. Now I am almost finished doing the part of the car. But I
have a problem with the part of how many electricity and gas your house
uses. I have an idea but I don't know if it will work and how to do it. For
it to work you should have a smart meter and somehow the app will connect
to the smart meter and the smart meter should send the data to the app but
can this be done. If not is there any other way that an app could keep
track of how many energy and gas you use without having to fill it in
manually cause honestly I don't think anyone will do that.

[android-developers] Voicemail MWI - Swipe Away

2016-01-26 Thread Ryan Raines
Nexus 5
Android 6.0.1
Patch Level 1/1/16
Build Number MMb292
Carrier - Straight Talk

2 Months ago I noticed that I was able to swipe away my voicemail MWI
notification. Usually I would welcome such an ability, but for voicemails,
I would prefer the notification to be persistent.

In the past, I was *NOT* able to swipe away the notification, it was static
until I listened to the the unread voicemail.

I don't recall changing anything in my phone settings. Is this a carrier
issue?

Thanks for reading.

For things like External Storage directory, you're going to need to use a

Re: [android-developers] Best way to save user's avatar

2013-07-22 Thread Ryan Harter
Take a look at that AOSP sources. You can see that the built in contacts
app is saving the photos to the file system.

On the PhotoStore class in the contacts provider, here is the javadoc
comment on the class:

   1. /**
   2. * Photo storage system that stores the files directly onto the hard
   disk
   3. * in the specified directory.
   4.  */

https://android.googlesource.com/platform/packages/providers/ContactsProvider/+/master/src/com/android/providers/contacts/PhotoStore.java

I know the subject tends to be a religious war, but I never store binary
data in a database unless absolutely necessary. In this case, use the
database to store an id or url of the photo, then have a specified file
structure based on that id (could be one large directory with a photo named
after each id).

Remember, you can also use a content provider to provide access to the
file system, so check that out as well.

Best
Ryan

Re: [android-developers] Re: finish() method of an activity inside of oncreate() and onpause() behaves differently. why?

2013-07-22 Thread Ryan Harter
What Ted said is absolutely true, I just wanted to add a little tidbit.

In the AOSP sources, the code actually checks to see if finish was called
from within onCreate and short circuits the displaying any UI. This is so
that, if you determine your activity doesn't need to be run and call
finish() in onCreate(), you won't get flickering from the activity starting
up and then being immediately killed.

Best
Ryan

 This is because of the activity
 lifecyclehttp://developer.android.com/reference/android/app/Activity.html#ActivityLifecycle.
 When you call finish() from within onCreate(), none of the other activity
 start-up events have occurred, so the corresponding shut-down events are
 also skipped. This behavior is mentioned in the documentation for
 onCreate()http://developer.android.com/reference/android/app/Activity.html#onCreate(android.os.Bundle).

Re: [android-developers] ORM library

2013-05-10 Thread Ryan Bateman
Your points are valid and to similar to my own concerns. While I doubt
that ORM would save the day, it would be nice to have a solution that would
reduce the large amount of boilerplate that comes along with maintaining
table structures.
I'll take a look at ORMLite - thanks for your thoughts.

 I think that ORMs works a lot better in dynamic language environments
 like PHP and Ruby. That is just my personal opinion - they might work
 just fine.

 Secondly my main concern when writing apps for Android is the overall
 device power consumption that my apps inflict. I have absolutely no
 empirical data to support the following statement - but my general
 conception is that computing and I/O is very expensive and should be
 avoided at all costs. It is also my thought that ORM libs doesn't help
 me do as little (especially I/O) as possible.

 So - the main reason I have chosen to go without any ORM lib so far is
 that weighing the complexity and maintenance of the domain model
 against the hand writing and optimizing of SQL clearly favours the
 hand-written approach. This is clearly because of a very limited
 domain and deeper apps with data only slightly more complex might
 benefit greatly from using an ORM lib without taking any significant
 performance or battery consumption impact.

 The ORM library I have been most pleased with (as far as I remember)
 is OrmLite: http://ormlite.com/sqlite_java_android_orm.shtml

 If you gather any experience please share - it would be interesting to
 hear about cases where using an ORM library saves the day ;-)

// If the exception is User Recoverable, we display a notification that
will trigger the

Log.e(Notifying with intent:  + e.getIntent().toString());
NotificationManager notificationManager = (NotificationManager) mContext

Intent authorizationIntent = e.getIntent();
authorizationIntent.addFlags(Intent.FLAG_ACTIVITY_NEW_TASK).addFlags(

Can anyone confirm that the RemoteControlClient.MetadataEditor is in fact
how the Bluetooth Media Metadata is supposed to work? If so, any ideas why
the lock screen controls would function but the Bluetooth Media Metadata
would not function?

thanks for the help.

 }

 Testing on a 4.2 image on an emulator seems to work well, as does testing
 on previous versions of Android on an emulator (2.3+).
 I can't see any immediate issues with the code (it may looks hackish in
 parts, but that's due more to being churned over thanks to endless
 frustration with this issue) but perhaps I've missed something?
 Anyone have any thoughts with this, on either a Galaxy Nexus in general or
 with 4.2 specifically?

 Thanks in advance for any assistance (or even thoughts at all.)

 Ryan

[android-developers] Re: HttpURLConnection on Galaxy Nexus 4.2

2012-11-23 Thread Ryan Bateman
That's not right, I'm afraid (unless I'm misunderstanding you.) POST
requests for REST APIs generally have a body that contains their content.
I had a dig into the Google IO 2012 POST request code and it seems like it
does some odd things.

  HttpURLConnection conn = null;

 try {

 conn = (HttpURLConnection) url.openConnection();

 conn.setDoOutput(true);

 conn.setUseCaches(false);

 conn.setChunkedStreamingMode(0);

 conn.setRequestMethod(POST);

 conn.setRequestProperty(Content-Type,

 application/x-www-form-urlencoded;charset=UTF-8);

 conn.setRequestProperty(Content-Length,

 Integer.toString(body.length()));

 // post the request

 OutputStream out = conn.getOutputStream();

 out.write(body.getBytes());

 out.close();

 // handle the response

 int status = conn.getResponseCode();

 if (status != 200) {

 throw new IOException(Post failed with error code +
 status);

 }

 } finally {

It sets a specific request method after already setting doOutput (which,
apparently, forces the request to use POST) and sets a fixed-length HTTP
header while still using chunked request mode. Which doesn't make a large
amount of sense.
I am at a loss and wondering if it's something to do with my internet
service using some kind of proxy that I'm not aware of and the
HttpUrlConnection failing to redirect somehow the first time. ('curl'ing
the same request works fine.)

[android-developers] Android USB gadget driver - make into loadable kernel module

2012-11-08 Thread Ryan Leonard
Hello all,

My question is, is it possible to build the linux kernel for an android
device without the usb gadget driver built-in? My motivation and what I
have tried thus far is listed below.

I am attempting to emulate the behavior of connecting and disconnecting an
android phone from a given host. I have looked through many methods to try
to emulate this behavior, and the solution I am working on now is:
1. build a kernel WITHOUT support for usb gadget
2. build a kernel module that supports usb gadget
3. put together an application to insmod/rmmod the resulting kernel module

I have done all three parts, and now I am seeing kernel panics. In
particular there are two actions that result in kernel panics
1. Plug android device WITHOUT usb gadget support into a host (the
enumeration must be causing the panic)
2. insmod and rmmod the kernel module, then insmod it again (kernel module
name is android.ko and the resulting kernel log messages that happen just
before panic are below)
[ 257.163085] sysfs: cannot create duplicate filename
'/devices/platform/omap/musb-omap2430/musb-hdrc/gadget/lun0'
[ 257.163177] Modules linked in: android(+) [last unloaded: android]

I am working with the Samsung Galaxy Nexus. I have verified the kernel
building process and the module building process by making a stock kernel
and a simple kernel module. So the issue IS particularly with the usb
gadget driver module and/or the kernel without built-in android gadget usb.

Best,
Ryan Leonard

[android-developers] How to respond to focused item change in ListView

2012-10-16 Thread Ryan Harter
I have a ListView which contains all of my TV Series in my Google TV app.
 My goal is that when the user uses the d-pad to move to a different TV
Show, without selecting it (clicking the center button) the background of
the main view will change to match the currently focused show. Selecting
the item will descend into the tree, so I can't use onItemClickListener for
this solution. The problem is that I can't seem to find out how to get
notified when the focused list item changes, only when the selected one
does. Does anyone know who to do this?

Thanks
Ryan

[android-developers] Latest Android ADT wizard gives wrong app name

2012-10-16 Thread Ryan Warner
Hey everyone,

Forgive me if this is already well known, but I went through the wizard of
the latest android ADT and when filling in the appropriate fields the
application ends up installing as the main activity's title name. I.e. I
make an application named Test1 and the main menu of the activity named
MainMenu and the application is installed and labeled as: MainMenu. You
basically have to edit the first activity android:label= field to be
what your application name installs as.

Someone else posted a very similiar problem in
StackOverflow: http://stackoverflow.com/a/12086806

Not sure if there is a better place to post this as a bug, if so I will
gladly do so. Thanks!

[android-developers] Gamepad Support

2012-09-17 Thread Ryan Loebs
Hey folks,

I'm trying to create an Android game that would be two players, played with
gamepads. I can connect two devices and the input is captured by my game
but I haven't found a good way to determine who is player 1 and who is
player 2. Linux normally defines this by connection order as
/dev/input/js0 and /dev/input/js1 respectively. The most I could find
while digging through the documentation was the deviceID that triggered a
keyDown/keyUp command (which according to the docs should not be used
reliably) or the device Descriptor which is a long hash representing the
device but that can have duplicates if there is more than one of the same
device connected (like two gamepads...).

Is there some Gamepad/Joystick API that I'm missing? Or am I correct in my
observations that gamepad support as listed in the Honeycomb-and-on
updates is merely just new KeyDown/KeyUp keycodes, etc.?

2012-09-03 Thread Ryan Kelso
My Ubuntu environment is on a laptop, as stated before, and the emulator
runs quite sluggishly, takes 5 minutes to even start up. It's quite the bad
development form for school work. (Although I am seriously thinking about
dual-booting Ubuntu on my PC, thus overcoming the problem).

Yes, I have tried turning off contact all software sources and it gives
me an error saying I am missing some key piece of software something or
other.. However, I just tried to install it and it all of a sudden worked.
Do not know why, maybe because of a computer reboot since last trying.

Thanks for all the help everyone.

[android-developers] My Keystore has a blank password

2012-08-24 Thread Dylan Ryan
Hello, When I first released my application I used the built in android
developer tools to generate a keystore with a blank password. I now want
to update my application, but the newer tools will not let me use a blank
password. Is there anything I can do about this? I have tried to export
my cert into a new keystore, but it still wants me to enter a password for
the certificate. I also tried changing the password, but the keytool.exe
wont let me change the password if the previous password is under 6 chars.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Thank you,

[android-developers] Google Nexus loses battery while powered off

2012-06-04 Thread Ryan Schwartz
Hello,

In the past few weeks, and especially since the most recent system
update, I've had problems with my phone's battery. It will lose nearly
all of its charge when I power it off at night. Last night, I powered
it off at 90% charged and this morning when I turned it on, it was at
30%. This is now a typical problem, occurring every night.

Any thoughts to what might be causing this? Is there a process that
keeps running that I need to turn off? Or is possible that it is just
an issue with the battery?

[android-developers] How to link Android project to another project within Eclipse

2012-05-03 Thread Ryan Groten
Hi there,

First off I'd better say I'm very new to this...So I have an Android
project in Eclipse and I want to use a java object class from another
project in it (this object class is shared between multiple projects).
 From Eclipse I created a link to the .class file of the other project into
the bin/classes/... folder in the android project. Then I configured the
other project in the java build path of my Android project. I thought that
was all there is to it, but seems like I'm missing something else. I get
dalvik: Could not find class abc.example.common.DataBean', referenced from
method... error.
I'm pretty sure the link is setup properly.

Is there a step I'm missing?

Thanks for your help,
Ryan

that the class imports properly and there are no errors when building my

 You shouldn't need to do any manual linking. Assuming the shareable class
 is
 in a project of its own (for example, called 'Libraries') and both that
 project and your working project that needs to use the class are open in
 the

 In fact, on the Windows version of Eclipse at least, if I simply refer to
 the shared class in my project then Eclipse usually offers 'Fix project
 setup' as an option for Red Wavy Line resolution - and it seems to know
 the
 Libraries project is the right project to include.

Re: [android-developers] How to link Android project to another project within Eclipse

2012-05-03 Thread Ryan Groten
Maybe I should clarify what I'm trying to do here in case I'm going about
it wrong...

I have a standard java server listening for connections from clients...in
this case a client could be a straight java web client OR a android device
client. Because of this I have two separate projects (one for the java
client, one for the android client). Clients use sockets to pass java
objects back and forth with the server...I want to be sending the SAME
object to the server regardless of which client it comes from. So I built
an object class and attempted to link both client projects to it. The java
client works fine, but I can't figure out how to make the android client
work with the object. If I take that class and put it in the android
project then the android client works...but the server then doesn't know
what the object is and it dies.

Maybe I shouldn't be sending objects in the first place?

Re: [android-developers] How to link Android project to another project within Eclipse

2012-05-03 Thread Ryan Groten
Thanks Mark, this info (and the posts Jason sent) are very useful.

Originally I considered sending XML strings and building the objects on
each end...however that still left me with the some issues:

1. Building an XML parser on each platform (unless I can link my android
project to my already built java one somehow...doubtful)
2. Managing object classes in multiple locations

I think I will pursue this now though.

Now I know this is a dumb question but I'll ask anyways...but how do I put
my object class into a separate JAR file? I'm assuming there's no
mechanism in Eclipse for this, I need to use ant?

Ryan

  project then the android client works...but the server then doesn't know
  what the object is and it dies.

 Put the object class in a separate JAR, and use that JAR on both
 your client and your server.

  Maybe I shouldn't be sending objects in the first place?

 I would recommend you choose a platform-and-language-neutral,
 easier-to-debug, easier-to-version on-wire encoding, such as JSON or
 XML. Or, if you insist that it has to be binary, choose Apache Thrift
 or Protocol Buffers.

 You can export JARs from Eclipse:

 Or, if you are always going to use Eclipse, there's some mechanism of
 creating dependent source projects -- I have never used that.

[android-developers] Same permission defined in multiple applications

2012-03-18 Thread Ryan Reeves
I am developing two applications that will share functionality via their
activities. I would like to only allow applications signed with the same
certificate to start these activities.

My plan is to create a custom permission with protection level of signature
and apply that permission to exported activities in both applications.
Either application can be installed first, so I will define the permission
in both application manifests.

Are there problems with defining the same permission in multiple
applications? I plan to release both applications on the Android market.

Thank you,
Ryan

 Subject: [android-developers] Problem about passing intent between two
 activities

 Hi all.

 I have an app and fixing errors/bugs. But I have problem when
 NewPictureNote.java calls PhotoTaker.java using
 startActivityForResult() to take a photo and save. My code uses
 callback and put binary data into Intent to return to previous
 activity. Here is the code:

 //PhotoTaker.java
 public class PhotoTaker extends BetterDefaultActivity implements
 SurfaceHolder.Callback{

 //..

    public void clickHandler(view v){
         //.
         Intent returningIntent = new Intent();
         returningIntent.putExtra(EXTRA_IMAGE_DATA, jpegPictureData);
         setResult(RESULT_OK,returningIntent);
         finish();
         break;
     }

 }

 //NewPictureNote.java
 public class NewPictureNote extends BetterDefaultActivity {
 //

 protected void onActivityResult(int requestCode, int resultCode,
 Intent data) {
         super.onActivityResult(requestCode, resultCode, data);

 try
         {
             //If we are getting a response from our picture taking activity
             if(requestCode ==REQUEST_CODE_TAKE_IMAGE)
             {
                 //If it was successful
                 if(resultCode == Activity.RESULT_OK)
                 {
                     //do something
                 }
                 else
                 {
                     //The user cancelled or an error occured
                     setResult(Activity.RESULT_CANCELED);
                     finish();
                 }
             } else {
                               //...
             }
         }
         catch (Throwable e) {
                       //...
         }

 }

 When I debug code, clickHandler() method in  PhotoTaker.java works
 well. It calls till the end of the clickHanlder() but the Activity
 won't close and onActivityResult() does not work. Please let me know
 what problem is? Thanks in advance.

[android-developers] Displaying Percentage Text inside Android Progressbar

2011-11-07 Thread Ryan
In order to display a percentage text inside Android's progressbar,
you will need to set up a RelativeLayout. Give the RelativeLayout
parameters followed below:

android:layout_width=200dip
android:layout_height=30dip
android:padding=0dip

Then close your RelativeLayout. Inside your layout, insert your
ProgressBar with following parameters:

android:id=@+id/youridgoeshere
android:layout_width=200dip
android:layout_height=30dip
android:layout_centerInParent=true
style=?android:attr/progressBarStyleHorizontal
android:indeterminateOnly=false
android:max=100

That's all for the progressbar, now on to the percentage text. Create
a TextView inside your layout and give it the following parameters:

android:@+id/youridgoeshere
android:layout_width=wrap_content
android:layout_height=wrap_content
android:layout_centerInParent=true
android:textColor=#00
android:textStyle=bold

Close your TextView and there you have it!!! Your text should be
centered horizontally and vertically inside your progressbar. The key
is to set up a relative layout while keeping it the same width as the
progress bar. Then using the parameter centerInParent keeps both the
progress bar and textview in the center of the relative parent. Hope
this helps out. Enjoy!

[android-developers] Re: How to do a Thread that only executes itself one time? (but continues alive)

2011-09-27 Thread Ryan Mattison
I think saex is looking for a producer / consumer model using a
LinkedBlockingQueue with Weak references, so he can read the settings
into a queue when they're available, but his application may not need
them until slightly later, and needs to aggregate the results. Weak
reference would allow this stack to grow and garbage collect itself
for memory as needed - keeping as much relevant sensor history as
possible?

http://download.oracle.com/javase/6/docs/api/java/util/concurrent/LinkedBlockingQueue.html

This isn't a good start ...

new Thread()

getSystemService(Context.SENSOR_SERVICE);

sensorMan.registerListener(SensorListener,
sensorMan.getDefaultSensor(Sensor.TYPE_MAGNETIC_FIELD),
SensorManager.SENSOR_DELAY_UI);

sensorMan.registerListener(SensorListener,

[android-developers] Re: Silence Alarms Based on Ringer Mode

2011-09-27 Thread Ryan Mattison
Hey Sycobob,

This varies a lot depending on weather you're using the 1.6, 2.1, or
2.2 SDK. It is possible to use the 1.6 SDK and have successful
results on every phone, but it is very tedious. If I could take it
all back, I'd wrote a different version for 1.6,2.1,2.2 and then
allowed anything 2.2+ fall into the 2.2 category when stability was
achieved.

I'd suggest looking into:
http://developer.android.com/resources/articles/backward-compatibility.html
section - using a wrapper class.

This may only be true if you want to support 1.6 phones and beyond. I
haven't approached testing 2.2 audio control build on a 1.6 phone, I'm
guessing it doesn't work 100%

 I've tried using the AudioManager class to mute STREAM_ALARM when the
 ringer mode is changed, but it doesn't actually mute my alarms. I used
 both

 setStreamMute(int streamType, boolean state)
 setStreamVolume(int streamType, int index, int flags)

 and neither did the job. I'm wondering if someone can point me in the
 correct direction for muting alarms (preferably still allowing them to
 vibrate if they are set to). Can I maybe access the 'alarm in silent
 mode' setting that (I think) is built into Android, even if Samsung
 has hidden it?

[android-developers] Re: standalone popup: UI question

android:layout_height=match_parent /

/LinearLayout

LinearLayout android:layout_width=match_parent
android:layout_weight=.5
android:layout_height=wrap_content

Button android:id=@+id/twobuttondialog_button_two
style=?android:attr/buttonStyleSmall
android:layout_width=match_parent
android:layout_height=match_parent /

/LinearLayout

/LinearLayout
/LinearLayout
To simplify coding in the future and keep everything consistent, it is
nice to follow the Android developers code style and create a class to
work with this. I titled this, TwoButtonDialog.java

import android.app.Dialog;
import android.content.Context;
import android.text.util.Linkify;
import android.view.View;
import android.view.View.OnClickListener;
import android.widget.Button;
import android.widget.TextView;

public class TwoButtonDialog
{

private Dialog twoButtonDialog;
private Button buttonOne;
private Button buttonTwo;
private TextView message;

public TwoButtonDialog(Context mCtx)
{
 twoButtonDialog = new Dialog(mCtx,
R.style.Theme_CustomDialog);

twoButtonDialog.setContentView(R.layout.twobuttonpopupdialog);

 buttonOne =
(Button)twoButtonDialog.findViewById(R.id.twobuttondialog_button_one);
 buttonTwo =
(Button)twoButtonDialog.findViewById(R.id.twobuttondialog_button_two);
 message =
(TextView)twoButtonDialog.findViewById(R.id.twobuttondialog_title);
}

public void showTwoButtonDialog(String buttonOneMessage, String
buttonTwoMessage, String Message, boolean linkify,
final onTwoButtonDialogShow commands)
{
buttonOne.setText(buttonOneMessage);
buttonTwo.setText(buttonTwoMessage);
message.setText(Message);
twoButtonDialog.show();

buttonOne.setOnClickListener(new OnClickListener()
{
public void onClick(View arg0)
{
if (commands != null) commands.onButtonOneClicked();
twoButtonDialog.dismiss();
}
});

buttonTwo.setOnClickListener(new OnClickListener()
{
public void onClick(View arg0)
{
if (commands != null) commands.onButtonTwoClicked();
twoButtonDialog.dismiss();
}
});

if(linkify)
{
Linkify.addLinks(message, Linkify.WEB_URLS);
}
}

public interface onTwoButtonDialogShow
{
void onButtonOneClicked();
void onButtonTwoClicked();
}

}
Now, to tie it all together whenever you want to use the popup you can
call the show snippet in the following snippet. This activity
TransparentDialogActivity was also setup to be transparent in the
Android Manifest, so it'll appear see through as the alarm activity
does.

public class TransparentDialogActivity extends Activity {
/** Called when the activity is first created. */

Context _context;

@Override
public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
super.onCreate(savedInstanceState);

_context = this;

TwoButtonDialog tbd = new TwoButtonDialog(this);

tbd.showTwoButtonDialog(Off, Snooze, Take Alarm Action,
false, new onTwoButtonDialogShow(){

@Override
public void onButtonOneClicked() {
Toast.makeText(_context, Off Button Pressed,
Toast.LENGTH_LONG).show();
finish();
}

@Override
public void onButtonTwoClicked() {
Toast.makeText(_context, Snooze Button Pressed,
Toast.LENGTH_LONG).show();
finish();
}});

}

Hey John,

The only way to learn a lot of stuff is to browse the Android source
tree (http://source.android.com/source/index.html) I think the tree
is down right now. This source code should be easily adaptable into a
ListView, I actually have an implementation of it in a project
ListViewDialog, but it isn't on this PC.

To me, it feels exactly like CSS doesn't work the same on all phones
99% of the time it feels like a hack job getting something working
correctly :P.

If you're early into Android development, my tool is clutch in saving
your wrists:
http://www.ryangmattison.com/page/Lazy-Android-Code-Gen-Android-findViewById-carpal-tunnel-syndrome-eclipse.aspx

All you need to do is drag and drop the eclipse install button into
your environment. It has a youtube video explaining what to do. This
will save you a lot of trial and error time.

   whole display area. I am asking because I need to display
   a message when an alarm expires but do not want to resort
   to notifications because they seem to be squished in the top
   right corner of the phone and I think would make it hard to turn
   an alarm off it it were a notification. On the other hand bringing
   up an entire window could obfuscate other applications. I guess
   there is nothing like HP/Palm webOS's notification mechanism
   on android (there you can pop up a window and the users can
   still keep on interacting with whatever app they were using or
   close the popup window)???

   Regards,

[android-developers] Re: How to maintain session in Android

2011-09-12 Thread Ryan Mattison
Hey Christopher,

There are a lot of ways. Simplest is to extend application, set this
as your application in the manifest. Then initialize a class with
getters setters to a
 hashlist. Create an accessor in your application class. When you
want to access this cast getApplication from an Activity or
Context.

Just typed this whole message in the Sense UI. I want to throw this
phone at a  wall.

[android-developers] Cure your android cancer

2011-09-08 Thread Ryan Mattison
Hi,

I'm surprised, I wrote a snippet tool to cure one of the 5,000 Android
cancer cells running through your veins. Only a 50-100 downloaders.

This should should feel like heroin. Once a brilliant idea for an OS
now a garbage dump, get whatever you have to do done and get paid. I
was a sandwich artist once, I made good sandwiches.

[android-developers] Code Gen the 45 boring minutes after writing a layout.

2011-09-02 Thread Ryan Mattison
I wrote a eclipse plugin that recursively parses a selected XML file
and keeps track of all the nodes with IDs, then adds variable
declarations to your clipboard, so you can paste them into your
class. I've type findViewById too many times and I'm sure others have
as well, so I'm looking for places to share.

I feel like it is a tool that should have been integrated from the
beginning.

[android-developers] Plain Unit Testing

2011-08-25 Thread Ryan Huang
Hi All,
I want to do some plain junit testing(using TestCase) for some utility
classes. I followed the guide in
http://developer.android.com/resources/tutorials/testing/helloandroid_test.html
But the problem is, the test is a separate project, when I wrote
TestCase I cannot import the utility class since it's in the target
project. Any idea how to achieve this?
Thanks!

Best Regards,
Ryan

Re: [android-developers] Re: using the uses-library to hide DLC

2011-08-21 Thread Ryan Routon
Well, it seems for our model where we would not want the user to download
the content until they have the main app, the only way to do this is with
the in app purchasing and having our own server push the content. Does
anyone know of a game out there that is currently doing this?

 Won't the user device need to have 'Install from unknown sources'
 enabled, which could be an issue (unless this doesn't happen with the
 shared ids)?

Also, if anyone has a better solution for DLC your feedback would be
appreciated =). This is a major issue for us since our main app is
more or less just a framework for adding additional content and games.

Re: [android-developers] using the uses-library to hide DLC

2011-08-17 Thread Ryan Routon
Thank you Mark, that is what I was worried about...

Does anyone know of any way to hide the downloadable content apps until the
main app is installed? Some form of app dependency is what we were hoping
for, but it looks like there might be no way of actually implementing this
using filters. We are worried that the user will try to get the
downloadable content before they have the Engine app adding to confusion
down the line.  Any ideas?

Kristopher, I found this other thread:

http://groups.google.com/group/android-developers/browse_thread/thread/1b78381b76bec33a/3b004c7ed2c2577a?lnk=gstq=dlc#3b004c7ed2c2577a

where Dianne Hackborn said to Just look for the other package by name with
the package manager.  Ensure
its cert is the one you expect to it can't be spoofed. If you want it to
cary data about what features you are enabling or whatever, you can use
meta-data tags under the application to supply whatever you want.

 Ryan,

 If I understand correctly, you're implementing a main app which is a
 framework for driving the other apps in your games. So your main app
 is the game engine (or at least, something in that spirit), and the
 other apps are the things that use the engine, is this correct?

 If this is true and you went wit the second option -- that level of
 process separation, at least -- how do you intend for your game apps
 to hook up to your main app? aidl?

Re: [android-developers] using the uses-library to hide DLC

2011-08-17 Thread Ryan Routon
@Mark - Actually that is just what we were talking about =) having each DLC
package check for the engine/framework required to run it and then once the
engine itself is run it would disable the DLC so that the icon would no
longer show, though I am wondering if the engine can disable the DLC app or
if that can only be done from the DLC app itself...hmmm. I am with you
though it seems that the easier way is to use our own server to push the
content, though from a marketing perspective it might be beneficial to have
more than one entry in the marketplace for product visability...

I suppose Google does not have an official stance on DLC at all eh?

@Kristopher - Ah sorry =) I misunderstood. In our model the DLC app would
really just be a collection of resources that the engine would then
utilize. Our goal is to have the engine run the entire game using the dlc
packages to implement the content. I believe I saw that discussion here:

http://groups.google.com/group/android-developers/browse_thread/thread/5a13baeb458b6974/dea9bcac98746c65?lnk=gstq=communication+between+two+apps#dea9bcac98746c65

 Nice, but, that doesn't really tell me what I wanted : ).. I guess my
 question was more, if you have two separate apps, what is the
 communication between them going to be like? If you write your engine
 code in a separate app, and have the games instrument the engine via
 rpc, don't you feel like that's going to be quite a bit of overhead?
 (Then again, the binder does seem to have fairly good perf, so maybe
 this isn't an issue.)

[android-developers] using the uses-library to hide DLC
