RE: Don't quite know how to respond to this...
I'VE CONTACTED YOU BEFORE ABOUT PENTAX CAMERAS. I SEE YOU USE THE K10D THATS WHAT I PURCHASED HOW DO YOU LIKE IT AND DO USE FILTERS ON YOUR LENSES. I HEARD THE FILTERS LET LESS LITE IN AND DETRACTS FROM THE IMAGE THANKS I REALLY ENJOY YOUR WEB SITE I've written you before about the K10D and how to use filters. Do you mean to tell me you didn’t receive it? I'm sorry. One of the advantages to DSLR's is that instead of purchasing multiple filters in varying sizes for different lenses, an expensive proposition, a filter medium can be applied directly to the sensor in the camera before attaching the lens. Simply purchase rolls of translucent tape in whatever color or tint you wish, cut, and apply to the sensor. One of my favorite tricks is to apply Vaseline directly to the sensor as it produces an oil-painting effect, instant art! It's easily removed with hydrogen peroxide or rubbing alcohol. Tom C. Re: K10D PEF or DNG?
I use DNG, mainly because I use ACR/ PSCS 1 as my RAW converter, and it's not compatible with K10D PEF. If I switch to Lightroom, which Godders input has tempted me to do, I would probably shoot PEF. Re: Pentax K10D sequence capture speed test
RAW Only - PEF - 9 frames to buffer full - 59 captures total - flush 9 sec RAW Only - DNG - 11 frames to buffer full - 52 captures total - flush 13 sec Interesting! So it captures a couple more DNGs in a burst, but then the DNG processing slows it down more than PEF processing, resulting in fewer images taken in one minute. This could be useful for those times I want to shoot a couple more frames at once. It's a rare occasion, but this info is good to know anyway. Thanks for the report, Godfrey. I shoot pef coz i fit more shots on a card but conv to dng and retain dng files... I have no first-hand experience with the lens in topic, but so far my experience with mirror lens is they are mostly soft. Of course there are differences, for example the f5.6/500 Rubinar is almost sharp (well let's say it's sharp as the Canon kit lenses :D) and f8/500 Phoenix is nowhere near to any kind of sharpness. If you want to see a shot made with K10D and Sigma f8/600 then take a look at here: http://somaa.fpn.hu/4257.pef I think if it's for web ... it could be usefull, easy to carry solution for the budget. Re: Good reflections needed, help please!
- Original Message - From: Brendan MacRae Subject: Good reflections needed, help please! Does anyone do product shots on dark (black) reflective material that produces good, even reflections? I'm currently stumped working on a shoot for a local company. I have to shoot some video components on black (easy enough) but I'd like some good natural reflection from the surface they rest on. I've already tried tempered glass over black cloth (velour) but the reflections double up and look god-awful. There's a PS trick for reflections but it's simply too much work for anything but straight on views. All of my shots are oblique angles. This guy had a really good idea: http://strobist.blogspot.com/2006/08/on-assignment-shoot-your-shiny-new.html But, there's no way I'm going to find a piece of granite as big as I need it (30 x 48 roughly) and it would be way too expensive in any event. Any suggestions? Thanks ahead of time. I'd try using a mirror and a polarizing filter. Position a black piece of velvet in such a way that the camera catches a reflection of it in the mirror, and use the polarizing filter to remove the reflection from the top surface of the glass. Yes, there's a remote assistant. You need 1.2 firmware or later. I've used it. It's great compared to the old D version. Mainly because the write speed is so much faster. FS: Excellent Super A body, SMC-A 24-50/4 lens
I haven't eBayed them yet, but this might really be my last try here before putting them up ... * Pentax Super A body. EXC+ condition. This camera feels and operates like new. Re: Sigma 600mm f/8.0 Mirror Lens Sample Photos and Specifications
Depends how you define sharp :D Mirror bokeh is fine with me :D I like donuts! For me real sharpness starts around the 2.8/80 Biometar (the kit lens for Pentacon Six TL). Or you can use the Carl Zeiss Jena Sonnar f2.8/180 for P6 or f3.5/135 Sonnar. I highly doubt any mirror lens will be able to give that kind of sharpness. And these are old lenses as well :D I also saw pictures with the 5.6/500 Rubinar and that lens was quite sharp too. But I will be happy to see some pictures (RAW preferred) with your Tamron and K10D (or whatever camera you have). I am really curious! .timber William Robb wrote: I have a Tamron 500/8 mirror lens which is very sharp indeed, though the bokeh is typical mirror lens sucky, so one wants to be careful with backgrounds. Re: Good reflections needed, help please!
When I could get it easily, I used fully exposed and developed roll film.. sixty inch wide roll film that is. It could be used like any roll background either base up for a reflective surface or emusion up for a beatiful satin surface. Double reflections were unheard of. Lithographic film was the blackest and had the glossiest base, but was prone to pinholes. Continuous tone film, while it didn't develop out as intensely black, was more dependably flawless. I don't know if the graphic arts industry even uses film anymore, but it should be available for making contact printing internegatives for platinum / palladium printing. regards, Anthony Farr On 16/11/2007, Brendan MacRae [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Does anyone do product shots on dark (black) reflective material that produces good, even reflections? Re: Prints
That's not entirely true. Most places that have a minilab will still do prints. I almost hate to admit this, but my brother and sister in law have probably never put the CF card from their Canon Rebel into the card reader on their home computer. They take the card to a lab and pay someone to download the pictures, make standard 4x6 proof prints, and, (I hope), burn the pictures to a CD, (though I've been afraid to ask). I'm so ashamed. Toralf Lund wrote: Mark Roberts wrote: mike wilson wrote: From: Mark Roberts [EMAIL PROTECTED] mike wilson wrote: He eliminated (many of) those in-camera. There's nothing wrong with that logic because, odd as it may seem to old 20th-century farts like you and me, the print is no longer the preferred medium for viewing photographs, at least for most people. I don't know. I've heard many people talk about how they miss their family album now that they've switched to digital. In that sense, prints is what they *prefer*, it just doesn't seem to occur to them that they can still make them, or it's harder to get around to having them produced when they're no longer a part of the standard package. Then again, perhaps getting the prints from that envelope they give you at the lab into an actual album was also quite hard in the past... And of course, not all the prints went into the album in most cases. I've also been wondering what will happen after people have lost all their photos because they wiped out the entire hard disk enough times, or find that they have no idea where their favourite pictures are located because they've switched computers so many times since they were taken... - T -- The difference between individual intelligence and group intelligence is the difference between Harvard University and the Harvard University football team. -- P. - Original Message - From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: Sigma 600mm f/8.0 Mirror Lens Sample Photos and Specifications Is there an optical reason why a mirror lens can't achieve high resolution? I wouldn't think so. As Bill said, the only real drawback is the bokeh. And with digital photography that can sometimes be repaired. They are finicky to make. It's more difficult to align mirror lenses than refractors, from what I've been led to understand, and, of course, a front silvered mirror can be all over the place for quality, and I suppose might be prone to oxidizing of the silvered surface. Having said that, there is a lot of very high end telescopes out there (Hubble?) that are essentially just great big mirror lenses, so the quality is there, as long as the manufacturer cares to put the effort into it. There are a lot of cheap reflector lenses out there, and, like all cheap lenses, optical quality is probably going to be compromised somewhat. The Tamron 500/8 was not a cheap lens, although it certainly wasn't in the price league of the 600/5.6. I'll dig it out and play with it a bit over the next day or so and post something from it. Probably not high art, but I'll try for something more interesting than a brick wall. Re: Sigma 600mm f/8.0 Mirror Lens Sample Photos and Specifications
I think mirror lens have the realyl advantages (well more or less) of being: * portable (but a bit too much, they are too lightweight for the focal length IMO and as such difficult to stabilize). In the end you still need a tripod which kinda negates the argument. * cheap. and I think this is the major point why people buy those. I have one although I didn't pay for it (long term loan ;) I'm sometimes very happy having it. I know I will *never* be able to pay for proper 500mm lens. so I'm happy with my Tamron. True the bokeh is indeed very problematic. But as a chgeap astro lens like moonshots (at least for a newbie like me) I think it is a very acceptable solution... not without obvious drawbacks. -- Thibault Massart aka Thibouille -- K10D,Z1,SuperA,KX,MX, P30t and KR-10x ;) ... -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Re: K10D PEF or DNG?
Which do you use as K10D Raw, PEF or DNG? PEF - to save space on cards while shooting. My recent testing showed, however, that if you need that little extra for fast bursts of 4-10 sequence shots, it's better to set DNG format. RE: Shooting in low temperature outdoors
Others will no dounbt have given you some advice but, particularly for Prague, watch out for the cathedral if you visit it. When I first went, this massive building had been sitting for two weeks in minus25 degree temperatures. The day before I arrived, it warmed up to about freezing. Walking around inside the cathedral for an hour or so (I had to stop because I was so cold) I had the spectacle of condensation forming on my lenses as I walked out into the snow... I was in Moscow at about that temperature a few years ago. I had a brace of LXs and the only time I got any condensation was going from outdoors into a lovely steamy warm café full of boiling kettles and steaming workers. The cameras coped admirably and all I had to do when I went out again was to wipe off the condensation before it froze. Jack, I like the way you mounted the pigeon on the end of the mast. Is this how you lured in for the picture? I think it is pleasing and effective. On Nov 16, 2007 10:50 AM, [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I didn't take many shots of my Mom's face, as she was sort of a poor model. Too self conscious. So I briefly showed this one. Originally I lightened shadows. This time, I did not. I like this rendering better, I feel it makes for a stronger shot. Re: Seattle at Dusk
Ken, Thanks for your comments. The foreground isn't blank. On most monitors (all 3 in our household and several at work) there is planking in the foreground whose diagonal lines lead into the illuminated buildings (making it Art ;-) ) That said, I think David Savage's editing, which lightens the foreground, is a real improvement. Re: Lightroom 1.3 update
I downloaded and installed it last night. Their site is being hammered ... download speed was about 10K bytes per second vs my more usual 170K bytes per second. :-) Lots of operations seem snappier and smoother on Mac OS X v10.4.11, even on the PowerBook G4. The export dialog is redesigned, easier to use too. Also, a beta SDK, concentrating on the Export facilities, has now been made available for the first time. I'm pretty jazzed.
