Sam, Comparing MJ's concerts to ARR's is like comparing Apple to Oranges, or rather Apple to Nokia. MJ's has very few artistes and MJ controls everything and is at the centre of things. ARR's is a different league altogether, having so many artistes perform together in different languages and genres only increases the complexity. I too agree that there are some glitches like synchronisation and pronunciation, which can be easily gotten rid off. Its not about hard work, music is their profession, It will be only a matter of time before the group dynamics are perfected. IMO, no western artiste can manage the complexity of ARR concert. But ARR can achieve the quality and perfection of the Western concerts. He is almost there. I don't understand why would it not be possible to distribute high quality music online. Very much possible. Like Gops said we should change with time. This is even an very acceptable and progressive change. I don't see a value in having anything physical, if a digital equivalent can save resources, decrease cost, increase quality and distribution access and eventually give more power to the artist than the distributors. Similar trend is happening in the publishing business which is far more disruptive with Kindle-only books getting releases. At least there people have legitimate reasons to crib saying that Kindle will be another strain on eyes. But look at the potential upside in the trees saved and hence the costs. 'Nostalgia has relative value. Ancient sites are guarded vigorously in Western societies while in India we spit on them. This is a different dimension. We might destroy something old and build new and 500 years later the new would have been old. To quote Gita - Chnage is the only constant. But it is up to us maximise the value of change to maximum people. If we think rationally, what we enjoy is music not CDs. I whole heartedly welcome this change. Good Luck Gayatri. Rawat never gives up his opinion, while he wants influence others opinion. On Mon, Oct 19, 2009 at 8:46 AM, V S Rawat vsra...@gmail.com wrote: Hi Gayatri sis, firstly, thanks for the elaborate, thoughtful reply. 1. I think, any true arr fan who had been liking ARR's dozens of masterpieces in two decades, and if he or she had liked yuvraj-zindagi, Ghajini-Kaise Mujhe, D6-all,etc. just in last 365 days, if, if, if such a true fan ends up liking Chiggy-Wiggy, then I would say that his/ her tastes have deteriorated. He should be prescribed listening to Bombay, Dil Se, Taal for a week to recover. :-) he he 2. If ichord, you and many other respected members agree that Chiggy-Wiggy was not a great song, then why isn't it a great opportunity wasted by ARR? The song got so much money spent on it by financiers, it got so much free publicity on account of that, for that matter - international publicity, entire world was waiting to listen to this song and get blown by its magic and you and ichord agree that it is not a great song. Why didn't ARR make it great when he has proven capability to make 800+ great songs. Why isn't it a significant noticeable omission by ARR? 3. Pappu was another fun number. I didn't like it much as such as my personal tastes are different. Still, Pappu was not lacking in any count. It was a complete song in itself. Even the question of Pappu being a great song or not never really arose in this list. 4. But, Chiggy Wiggy is lacking. Chiggy Wiggy is unimaginative as per ARR's own past history. It runs much more deeper on its cultural and philosophical impact. The unabashedness with which the loud Indian bhangra starts to defeat foreign melodies is not what ARR stands for. ARR is not for confrontation. ARR is for peace, harmony, unity, merging of cultures, mutual love and respect. How could ARR give a song that teaches confrontation, that mocks at foreign culture to show off that Indian culture is great and will defeat all the cultures of the rest of the world. By professing such a line of thought, ARR has countered everything he has so consistently and laboriously taught us in two decades. After this song, no one can believe ARR he speaks of peace and harmony. 5. You may find just a tiny comparison in Taal's Ishq Bina. If you kindly analyze it, you will find that Ishq Bina was also really having two different thought lines - the girl was vocal about love, quite open, sort of craving, and boy was shy and introvert. But, Ishq Bina didn't let one line of thought defeat the other line of thought. The boy simply, softly, politely states tumne ishq ka naam suna hai, hamne ishq kiya hai. That's all. That does it. Both expressed their view and both won. People loved it. I still remember some friends humming this sing line tumne ishq ka naam suna hai, hamne ishq kiya hai. as if it was the summary of entire Taal, reflected in their life. It has the essence of what love is. It taught people what love is. Ishq Bina reflected the entire personality of ARR. Pappu is really mocking up guys who can't dance, and even use the term Sala in an abusive vain, but it even then remained friendly leg pulling. No one felt offended by listening to Pappu. Even in this list, there were posts like xxx can't listen, sala, xxx can't write, sala and we all laughed. Chiggy Wiggy follows different line altogether. Chiggy Wiggy teaches colonization, Chiggy Wiggy teaches war, Chiggy Wiggy teaches slavery, Chiggy Wiggy presents girls as a spineless dumbo who are made for getting dominated by male tactics. Chiggy Wiggy undermines human dignity. Who should take the responsibility of making Chiggy Wiggy the way it goes? Thanks. -- Rawat On 10/19/2009 10:01 AM India Time, _Gayathri Chandrakasan_ wrote: I'm sorry but try as I might, I really can't understand the reasoning behind your animosity towards Chiggy Wiggy, Rawat. Quote: We can't hide from the fact that other people might be looking at this group to get authentic feedback on the goodness of his songs, and all those got misguided by this group's endless advertising Chiggy Wiggy and entire bullu. When we agree that this group is considered a place to get authentic information on ARR, and some members can't even tolerate a lovely prank played by Gopal Anandan for that exact point, then we can't hide from the fact that other people might be looking at this group to get authentic feedback on the goodness of his songs, and all those got misguided by this group's endless advertising Chiggy Wiggy and entire bullu. Does that go to say that its tough so lets do average work. We can take this argument if other artists of similar calibre are doing average concerts. No, thats not the case. Yes, its tough to find a great sound engineer who also understands the intricacies of Rahman's music, but NOT impossible. Boss, Its ALLAH RAKHA RAHMAN. Nothing short of best would fit him. I would be utterly displeased if some random guy comes up with a article Two time Grammy winner A R Rahman's concert turned out be an average experience. He needs to work on the quality of sound. Composing in a studio and performing to a live audience are 2 different games. The blame shifts blatantly on ARR for no fault of his. Sincerely, even one concert in a year or 2 year which is indeed good to be released on DVD would suffice and a CD compilation of concert versions of the songs. IMHO Rahman doesn't have to burn out himself with so many concerts like the western artistes. Or atleast not yet. His rate of producing music is many times that of a western artiste. Those artistes come out with 1 or 2 albums in a year and they have to do these concerts to promote them. Rahman should decide on his strategy. He is in a position where no artist has ever been before - catering to a (almost) truly global audience each of different culture and sophistication. Re: [arr] Fwd: Chennai concert
I slightly have a different view. Rahman is not the same to others as he is to us. People who pay hefty prices and travel all the way to have a good experience should be treated with that experience - Good ambience, Pyrotechnics, good mix and performance. We might think that ARR is doing us a favor through his music. But, for a non-ARR fan (in the sense of dedicated yahoo group type fan) that is not the case. They are buying an experience and if it fails, it affects the reputation of the provider. I am not saying ARR is responsible, but any failure from any of the musicians, singers, organisers, crowd managers, anybody, its ARR's reputation at stake. There are way better event management groups and I seriously hope ARR signs with the best. Try it or try 'JBL reference' headphones i think it costs 2500 rupees, an absolute stunner. OK, here is the little i know and it works *Home Theatre* Dont go by the number of speakers. Some sony models come with 5 center button speakers and woofer of 4 channels thats like 11 speakers!! - Farce. Just take any 850RMS above home theatre with auto/manual calibration. Use manual calibration for rear right and rear left and notch it by say 1.5 dB. treble sounds crispper then. Works for ALL RAHMAN DISCS. Don't go by the size of the woofer. As long as its in a wooden box its fine. However, don't ever push the woofer into a corner of the room. It booms and the bass reproduction is wrong. You are looking for a rumble not windows rattling. Move your woofer about half feet away from walls. Test it by playing Maula Maula track from Delhi 6 ( a suble bass line that sounds so great!!) If you have some cash to blow try these - Jamo S 606 home speaker systems - Harmom Kardon HKTS series And yes, i agree Bose is over rated. Its great but lot of other guys have caught on and now theres very little difference. Go right ahead and by anything nice thats has packed speakers in wood. Not plastic. And if you get a DVD/CD player with the package but it. Normally u only get an AMP. In that case PLEASE do not compromise on your DVD player. Don't fit local ones. Play CDs and not MP3s in these systems to judge the output. Sometimes we might feel the bass or treble is low while playing a CD. But the sonic range is usually very rich and if you just change your seat it might sound better. *CD players * * * I sometimes think standlone systems sound way better. When you buy a HiFI or a mini HiFi, try and locate one with a manual EQ. This feature is becoming quite rare and i hate it. I found a pair from Wharfedale quite stunning. But then don't break your head!, but any neat wooden bookshelf speakers with system of about 150 RMS will be just fine for a small room. Like a Hostel room. *Headphones* * * Firstly, throw your iPOD headphones into the trash. The device works fine, but pathetic headphones. For your regular use like running,GYMing etc buy the Sennheiser that comes in a green box ( don't know the model number). Costs about 1500 rupees. It takes your iPOD audio to a different level. However, i found HD 595 Senheisser the awesomest one! Bose also works, but dont pay that much seriously. MP3 is MP3, you wont get some magic extra sounds and most of today's bollywood music is compressed and fedility is missing ( this included BLUE also, sorry ...). Blue sounds bad even in good headphones. Seriously, whats with that? *Audiophiles thingy* * * Well, investing on sound is not a bad idea only if you are listening to that kind of a material in its original medium. And this does not include Original MP3 CDs! Some of these Sony CD contain 'Super MP3!!' what the heck is that! The thing is, Audiophiles range is no doubt superior but it depends a lot on listening ambiance. Mostly we live in apartments with lot of world noises and volume issues. With this we only end up under utilizing the machines. And if you hookup an MP3 player you are just wasting your money in those. Most materials are not produced for Audiophiles. *Dos and Don'ts for playing audio CDs* * * Don't look for surround sound in audio CDs. Even if its is Rahman you won't find 5.1 effect in audio CDs. Its not meant for it. Super Audio CD or SACD is very rare. I have a few but have not compared with any standard CD medium of the same track. Don't increase the volume and think wow. If you can't hear details in 1/3rd volume then either your setting is wrong or the CD is badly recorded. *REFERENCE AR RAHMAN TRACKS FOR TESTING IN YOUR NEW HOME THEATRE/ CD SYSTEM*. Selected purly in brilliance in the sound (Not in any order) 1. Dil Se Re 2. Marudhaani - Sakkarakatti 3. Ghanan Ghanan - Lagaan *(Bose showrooms used this track as demo for a long time!)* 4. R. Rahman By Joe Cellini If you haven’t yet heard at least some of the score from this year’s Oscar-winning best film “Slumdog Millionaire,” you must be trying very hard not to. Even before it won two Oscars for best score and best song (“Jai Ho), as well as the Golden Globe and BAFTA awards for best score, A. R. Rahman’s soundtrack—written on a Mac in Logic Studio—had registered with any reasonably alert listener during the film’s much-reported rise from Indian-flavored indie longshot to runaway worldwide hit. If the soundtrack’s audio reach is in part attributable to the film’s sweeping success, its musical grasp is strictly the result of Rahman’s unforgettable melodies and rhythms. In fact, It would be as hard to imagine “Slumdog” without its script or cinematography as without Rahman’s score. One of the world’s most prolific and celebrated cinematic composers and top-selling recording artists, Rahman has scored more than 110 films, starting with Roja (1993), which was named by Time magazine as one of the 100 best movie soundtracks. He is an equally avid student of cutting edge music and technology, and he uses both to turn out scores and songs that seamlessly combine classical Indian and Western sounds with modern vocal and instrumental styles. For “Slumdog Millionaire,” Rahman blends Bollywood, hip-hop, world music and more to not only complement but significantly carry the film’s energetic plot and audience-pleasing themes. In a recent phone interview, Rahman spoke about how he used Logic and other tools to create his eclectic, ambitious score against unforgiving deadlines. How did you come to work with director Danny Boyle on “Slumdog Millionaire”? Well, I was really busy last year. I was doing about eight films, too many really. And I had this email saying “Hey I’m Danny Boyle, I like your work, and it would be great for us to have you on our film.” I didn’t know what to answer. But after exchanging several more emails, I met him personally in Mumbai. And when I talked to him, I had some interest and I wanted to see the film. He had a first cut of the film already, and when I saw that I was really interested and wanted to do it. So I left another film to do this one. I made time for it. Was your work on this film different than on other films? In some ways it was different, because it didn’t require as much work as I sometimes do for other films, but it required high-quality work. Danny usually uses many composers for a film because he wants different feels in the music. When you go to just one composer, it usually has one feel. So I took a clue from that and tried to think about what he might get from different writers with different sensibilities, always keeping something of mine in everything I wrote. He thought I wouldn't have time to do that, so he was just going to have me do a few songs, but I feel you have a responsibility to the whole movie. Each track in this film is completely different from the other. The film needed that, because it follows one person’s life, but in many different situations and moments from that life. And for the same reason, there are different cultural elements: some are very strong Indian influences, and some are very pop influences. If you take all the good things from ten different soundtracks and put it together, it can make a beautiful soundtrack of its own. How long did it take to compose the “Slumdog Millionaire” score? The initial ideas were all done on this very basic idea of me singing or playing keyboards and vocals. I’d send Danny a scratch of each idea over email, several for each cue he’d given me. Danny would listen and tell me which of the numbers he liked, and he’d start placing them. That was done a couple of months back. When I had collected all of these ideas, I went to England, and we spent three weeks together and finished the score. We’d originally scheduled four weeks, but because Danny decided to mix the film early, we had that much less time to do it. Any disagreement about the kind of score you wanted? Normally when I work with a director I work through his eyes, and through his vision, and that’s how I worked with Danny. Ideally, he gets excited when he hears the sound I’ve delivered. At the same time, he challenges me to produce other sounds and ideas. It made the job so much easier for me than if I’d done something radically different on my own and then tried to fit it into the film’s conception and convince people. Do you typically write

SDM was released in Italy on 5 December under the title The Millionaire. i watched it in a fully packed theater. and do i need to add that not a single person left the hall until Jai ho was completely ended? i think no. watching the experience was overwhelming and i must say altogether new compared to watching it on small screen. the BGM was so exotic and thumping which added immense energy to scenes. talking about the songs besides O saya especially the way Mausam escape was used was truly awesome. i really loved to see that they used the best of the lot (Mausam escape) twice. it is so energetic and thumping especially in the second scene where first it runs lightly in background as Jamal sees Latika on platform and then suddenly starts loudly as Saleem and his guys run to get Latika. i also noticed that when Mausam escape is played in the first scene (kids escaping) the sitar is played in the background, i mean it is not very prominent as if it was dimmed but in the second scene it is loud and very clear. the second best piece i liked was when Liquid dance is played, loud and right in your face, un-ignorable. also i noticed that there is a difference between versions of Riots on CD and in the movie. in the later there is some additional instrument, like piano, playing throughout, which is missing in CD version. also on my way to Rome (in Munich) i noticed an article on SDM's Oscars in a German newspaper (called Bild) which i found interesting somehow. here is a scan of it: http://img7.imageshack.us/img7/7792/arrpaper.jpg the article circles ARR's in photo. it mentions him with full name Allah Rakha Rahman all the way. here is the translation i managed to come up with: Composer Alla Rakha Rahman (43) is the son of an Indian left politician. wow... did we know that? lol. or perhaps it is translation error. Composer Allah Rakha Rahman (best film music) should become a doctor, however failed (or dropped) in exam. wow.. did we know that? at least not me. The title song Jai ho (Best song) was written for the film Yuvraaj (Remake of Rain Man) nevertheless its director did not want it. quite right that Ghai did not want it however it is a surprise to me that Yuvraaj was a remake of Rain Main. - Jahanzeb

Both were musicians trained in the alchemy of sound, both shared their hopes of setting up their own studios one day. As Rahman’s stock rose in filmdom, Selvakumar notched up a reputation in the Indian music industry as a master technician. Soon, he got into the business of supplying high-end music technology equipment. “That’s when our acquaintance changed to friendship,” says the man who has helped Rahman set up his many state-of-the-art studios. To him also goes the credit of setting up the first and only Apple-certified music, special effects and film editing technology training institute in the country. Selvakumar was one of the few people who knew about Rahman’s dream of setting up a music school. “He wanted to start a school of music technology but I insisted he couple it with teaching.” One day in 2007, Rahman decided that the time had come. “And when AR wants something, he wants it right away. He asked me if I would manage it for him and I didn’t see why I should refuse him,” he says. A regular day at the school sees Selvakumar taking classes in audio and video technology and ironing out numerous administrative hassles. He also continues to deal in Apple equipment. That was the beginning of a partnership that has lasted to this day. James has since grown to become Rahman’s manager and chief public relations officer. He occasionally assists the composer in stage shows and handles much of his coordination — with musicians, clients, talent and even the media. The road to Rahman, it could be said, goes through James. Born and brought up in Mumbai, James got hooked to music at an early age. After graduating from Loyola College, Chennai, he got a degree in violin from the prestigious Trinity College of Music, London. “I played in a band called Jumping Jewels, handling the vocals and guitar. That was before I went solo,” he says. He worked part-time with Rahman initially but became a permanent member of the team, singing the jingles and helping him with production. Being Rahman’s manager has meant that James does not get much time for his own music—except when he plays at church. He has no regrets though. “God sends messiahs to earth, whether it is Jesus Christ or Prophet Mohammed. It has been quite a while since He sent someone. I believe A.R. Rahman is such a messiah who works through his music,” says James, for whom familiarity has only brought more appreciation towards Rahman, the musician and the man. Gattani first met Rahman through singer Hariharan, another client. Since that meeting, he has handled all of Rahman’s tours and performances, and more recently, has been managing Rahman’s endorsement portfolio as well. Whenever Rahman is in Mumbai, Gattani finds himself seated next to him. “But being with him doesn’t mean that he’ll talk anymore than he usually does,” he says with a laugh. “His concerts have to be technically high-end, with something different each time. Working for him means making no mistakes and planning in advance.” Gattani is dogged by international clients’ proposals for Rahman concerts after his Oscar win. But, as of now, his priorities lie with organising Rahman’s first-ever live concert in Kerala, scheduled for May. S. SIVAKUMAR, 41, CHIEF SOUND ENGINEER A

Re: [arr] Music gives hope in the middle of darkness
Chord, Good thoughts. I may sound paranoid, but i believe the whole way we humans have been evolving went terribly wrong somewhere - war and philanthropy started to be romanticised. Both are evil, they shouldn't exist in an ideal world. Financial, market and social institutions designed for equal rights ended up serving the rich and against the poor. Now the world is slowly staring to rethink its stand on wars and war is no more seen as an act of pride or patriotism. Banks are starting lend money to the poor, who need money, rather than always lending to the rich, who don't need it! World is becoming more colorful with different people starting to live together. Somehow we should devolve socially and reach back to those harmonious living. We should hope to see peace now, rather in future. I think if we don't see now, it will never happen in future. We, as fans of Rahman, should spread it by living it. Music is one of the most powerful mediums to spread message. We have seen and had such experiences. I definitely think Rahman will become a force strong enough globally to bring many people together through his music. It will be each of our responsibility (yes, i believe we cannot be indifferent, if we don't do it then we are doomed, we just cannot continue to deteriorate any further) to live the values we want to see. I agree it's complex or has been made complex by many social structures and few people who gain out of that. But as a matter of fact, it's so simple to live peacefully as that's the very nature of us. On Sun, Mar 15, 2009 at 5:27 AM, Chord purev...@yahoo.com wrote: Nope. I am not him. Hearing ARR's music helps me to think about all the varied, colorful, beautiful world cultures that surround us and the importance of maintaining peace and harmony for our well being. As I've said before, his music represents the best of humanitycolorful, vibrant, tolerant, peaceful, going beyond artificial boundaries. There are only a few things in this life, in this world right now that are giving me hope for a better future for humanity. ARR's music is one of those things. At the risk of sounding ideal and naive, why can't we live peacefully? Why can't we raise our children with peace and tolerance, teaching them good valuea that promote peacful co-existence and tolerance with different people and cultures? I know it's complex and it's a problem that won't just go away by itself. ARR's music to me represents so much much more than just immediate entertainment and mood uplifting. The philosophy behind his music, his message has never been more important to embrace than now. God, save us from ourselves and may peace be our future.

I am a known JA basher so I thought I can say about this song also. khwaja song might be holding additional value for muslims due to its religious connotations, and for general fans it might have got some high weightage due to the anecdotes of ARR having composed it already and then AG using it in the film. But as a song, I find khwaja song quite barren and monotonous if I can say that. It is a sort of introvert song giving a feel that a person must be singing it within his heart and mind. It is his personal pleasure. Others would not be able to connect to it. Firstly, the song has some 1:20 initial alaaps that are quire boring to say and kill the entire beauty of song that comes after that. It is more like the sounds generated when a player tunes up his instruments before starting to really play it up. Such a long wasted part is a sin in current busy time. Those ya khwaja ji, moinuddin, gareeb nawaz are without any lyrical or music value. So, I think the start itself is badly thought up. But then the song starts with lovely music BUT, BUT BUT poor lyrics. A typical lack of creativity in the monotonous, logically-built up lyrics as is usually the case with Javed Akhtar. Khwaja Mere Khwaja Dil Mein Sama ja Bebaso ki Taqdeer Tu ne hai sawari There is no rhyming, no deep devotion. All that dil mein sama ja type of phrases had been used a 1000 times in cheap ladki-pataao songs in 60s and here he comes up with that in a 21st century devotional song. I would say that the major failure of the song remains in the poor lyrics. Then, it fails in arrangements of vocals. None of the voices carry and ethos and pathos. They are just singing an any song, not a religious song for the most respected muslim personality of Indian subcontinent. pronunciations are also not clear. that bebaso ki taqdeer tu ne hai sanwari, has bebaso and tu ne pronounced so pooorly that one has to strain to hear it and make the meaning of it. Sad that it is our man himself. And then Tere darbaar mein khwaza noor ko mainne dekha has noor pronounced so poorly by our man himself, and then there are alaaps, and then the music gives the impression that the line is going to be repeated, tere darbar mein khwaja - but they drop the line unceremoniously and begin another line - sar jhukaate hain auliya. What was so great in mentioning that auliya sar jhukate hain, so what, is that why you feel respect for him? I think the respect should have come from within, not due to seeing how others are respecting him. and then tu hai khwaja - rutaba hai pyara chahne se tujhko mustafa ko paya that xxx is still not clear to my aging ears. and lastly that hai mere peer ka sadqa, tera daman hai thama, tali hai bala hamari, chhaya hai khumar tera, jitna bhi rashq karein beshaq, to ab hai XXX mere khwaja, tere kadmo ko mere rahnuma nahin chhodna gawara. I don't get what exactly is the concept. No rhyming, no poetry, just some words have got hammerred in. It must be the poorest lyrics by Javed. I would say that ARR's voice is also not as sweet enough as he is famed for, there is a rare shrillness, a hollow in ARR's voice that I don't remember having heard in any other song. May be he was trying a new voice but it didn't suit my ears. all the internal aalaaps also are confusing, making it a classical song. They are not even bringing a sense of a trance. And as I already said once that JA music was a personal music and didn't reflect the lavishness of the film. I think I can describe now what I meant by that personal vs lavishness. Listen to the music between 3:40 - 4:05. That Persian sort of. Now, that is what I call a royal music, that has lavishness, that has luxury, that is group music, public music. Also the instrument that stars playing at the backdrop at about 6:10 and continues till the end of song. that single instrument is giving a royal touch to the song. That type of music is what I expected to be everywhere in JA music and background, but no, we didn't get that. Our man had different ideas about music suitable for the emperor of India. Compare the above two sounds to the sound at 1:20-1:45. Now this 1:20 sound is what I call a personal sound, lacking royal touch. It is a commoner's, a poor man's sound, now suitable for a period film. Seeing so many members liking the song so much, mentioning it as their most fav song, etc., I tried to listen to it several times, but this is one song of ARR that I found lacking in almost each and every aspect. -- Compare that to D6's Arziyaan.

The thread has so far been in good spirit. I don't see anything hideous here. We can't discuss without pointing the names of people (of course not when speaking about members, but with celebrities and public personalities that's the way it has to be). ARR asked not to abuse. We are always within our rights to compare different works, not people.

It was a morning show on a Sunday that meant we’d have to drive up all the way from East Delhi. We were possibly the only people seeing the film, my wife and I, and I tried my best to ignore the stale smell that enveloped us as soon as we were seated. I don’t usually see Tamil or Hindi films. It’s not a snob thing but the few times I have gone against my better judgement, the experience has not been encouraging. Roja, I reluctantly agreed because in my line of work those days, the word I wrote most frequently was ‘Kashmir’. The movie was not so hot. But the music was another story. I bought a tape in the first shop I could find in CP as soon as we came out of the theatre and played it all the way back home, again and again. I kept up with Rahman whenever I came down south, which was roughly once a year. The very next year I remember a brief infatuation with Netru Illatha Matram from Pudhiya Mugam. The song was classy. Even though there was a woman singing there was no shrieking, which did wonders to the song. I usually associated banshees with Tamil film songs fea turing women singers. This song managed to sound traditional as well as modern at the same time. And the woman singing it was nicely restrained. There was a very strong melody line I think the base vamp did that as well as percussion that guided the song. There was a bit of either sitar or veena in the middle that I didn’t particularly care for but the song was definitely uplifting. Then someone recommended Duet. I immediately gravitated to En Kadalae, the SPB song. It was a musical jewel. What was amazing was an extended saxophone solo by Kadri Gopalnath that gave it a solid depth. I am partial to the saxophone but a solo in the local idiom was new to me. I lost touch with Rahman for a bit till Boys came along. I played it over and over when I dropped my daughter off at school in Dhaula Kuan. She enjoyed Boom Boom. She was five years old, going to the prep class and she danced in the car and although she could not get a grip on the words, she sang along with a rare gusto that made the song sound even better. I loved it. It was a terrific song, world class. I heard Alaipayuthey much later and there was one song I remember being as smooth as a 25-year-old single malt: Kadhal Sadugudu. I played Smayiyai (from Kandukondein Kandukondein) and Nenjum Ellam and Jana Gana Mana (from Ayutha Ezhuthu) and Kama Kama (I forget which film) to my north Indian Hindi-speaking friends who did not know a word in Tamil (except the ones which I taught them at their specific request and which cannot be repeated here) whenever they came over for a drink. Everybody enjoyed the songs. They were infectious. One of them remarked that if you played this music in Times Square you’d have the entire place jiving, the blacks, the Hispanics, the red necks, the wasps and everybody else. Even the Pope would have trouble sitting still if Rahman was playing. I’ve been thinking. If I were Rahman would I want to go down in history as a musician who won Oscars? Winning an Oscar for music is like giving Hemmingway the Nobel Prize in the best handwriting category. Or would I want to go for Grammy? I would want to go for Grammy. Rahman is uniquely placed to make a serious bid for it in several categories. Look what Supernatural did to Santana. Collaborating with other musicians worked wonders for Herbie Hancock in The Joni Letters. Collaboration brings out the best in musicians. If Rahman chooses his musical partners carefully I am one hundred per cent sure that he will get more than one Grammy. If you listen to Rahman you know you are listen ing to a contemporary artist who listens to other contemporary artists carefully. If Santana can team up with Placido Domingo (Shaman), Rahman can team up with Santana. I would like to hear some full blooded piano runs in Rahman’s music, not the teasing, mushy, romantic interlude kind of the jingle variety. Maybe he could team up with Herbie Hancock for a tune. I would like to hear a Fender Rhodes solo in a Rahman tune, not the ten-second kind but the minute. I would like to hear some smoking saxophone playing, not Kadri but maybe Courtney Pine. I would like to hear some seriously elastic voice in a Rahman tune, not the kind you hear in Secret of Success (Boys) but more Bobby McFerrin and less Pink Floyd (Great Gig in the Sky). It would be even better if Rahman collaborated with Michael Jackson for a song, a

Anything outside that range is overlooked and not appreciated as much, and sometimes ridiculed. I have found that amongst many elders, there is a certain arrogance or haughtiness implying, we know what's best. This is a product of our culture revering elders and their wisdom by tradition in contrast to many seniors and elders feeling left out and disrespected by attitudinal changes in today's world reflecting less respect and reverie towards seniors. For example, when I gave my parents a copy of the D6 CD, they only liked the folk and semi-classical elements of the soundtrack. That's it. When I asked them about Jaane Tu, they said that they didn't like the music, although they love and appreciate ARR's other works that are more in line with their taste. Of course, even within elders, there will be a lot of variation in terms of taste and attitude, but overall, I feel that they are more narrow minded about music than we youngsters are OVERALL AS A GROUP, keeping in mind individual differences. Because ARR's music is so diverse and touching upon so many different genres, a large percentage of his work is not going to be appreciated by those with more narrow minded definitions of good music. Who knows, maybe when we reach that age, we too may reflect some of that narrow mindedness in terms of our exposure compared to what the youth may be listening to at that time. However, I have hope that because we youngsters have been exposed to such an array of world music through ARR and other artists, I think we will generally have a broader appreciation for music than previous generations. ARR has gifted us with something very important: tolerance and open mindedness for different types of music. Thank you ARR!

A two-member team in charge of the technical and production aspects of the Rahman show, the celebrated composer’s first live show after winning the double Oscars, landed in the city on Thursday on a one-day recce mission. Shailesh and Bharath, who have been associated with a number of Rahman shows during the last four years, first visited the Chandrasekharan Nair Stadium, the main stage where Rahman will perform live. Both work for Rapport Productions, the even management company that organises the tours of A.R. Rahman. They inspected the venue, deliberated on the position of the stage - the pros and cons of each - the lay of the land, gauged the wind behaviour, the natural acoustics of the stadium, its capacity and took stock of the facilities. ``We normally design the stage after taking a close look at the venue,’’ Bharath, who is in charge of production, said. When the team reached the stadium, a skeleton of a stage was already present, the one that was used for a channel presentation. It was at the West end and faced the Palayam mosque. Shailesh was more or less happy with the position. ``Ideally, the stage should have been on the opposite side, right below the mosque. But accessibility is a problem there. Moreover, there are no rooms on the other side,’’ he said, standing five-feet high on the half-dismantled stage. ``This side looks fine. It is easy to reach the stage from the main road and there are rooms at the back which can be used as green rooms for the musicians.’’ The viability of designing the stage in front of the torch pavilion, facing the M.K. Joseph Pavilion, was also discussed. The idea was dropped because, as Shailesh said, the sound could get slapped back from the opposite pavilion. Further, the seating capacity will also be reduced. The stage will be 100 feet wide and 70 feet long. It will be roofless. Except for these basic facts, both Shailesh and Bharath are in the dark about Rahman’s plans. ``We don’t know what Rahman has in mind. This is the first show after the Oscars. He would definitely want to give this show a completely new feel, something that has never been experienced before. He might even have a unique theme for the show. It’s Rahman, anything is possible,’’ Shailesh said. Normally, a Rahman show will have ten big singers and 40-odd musicians. ``For the show here, we feel it might be bigger. That’s the feel we have. We will get a clear idea after we meet the man himself,’’ Shailesh added. Bharath was particular that the venue should have chemical toilets. He found two on the track, behind the bare stage. Bharath told his local contacts that he would mail a check-list after he gets back in Mumbai. While Rahman performs live at the Chandrasekharan Nair Stadium, the performance will be simultaneously projected in two other venues in the city. ``Rahman himself will reveal the two additional additional venues when he flies down to Kochi on a day between March 5 and 10 to formally announce the show,’’ Shailesh said. The show has been organised by Global Kerala Initiative - Keraleeyam to obtain funds for their AIDS initiative. *trivand...@epmltd.com* ** http://www.expressbuzz.com/edition/story.aspx?Title=Setting+the+stage+for+Rahman+showartid=jESb7Q5rVbw=SectionID=lMx/b5mt1kU=MainSectionID=lMx/b5mt1kU=SEO=AIDS,+rahmanSectionName=tm2kh5uDhixGlQvAG42A/07OVZOOEmts -- regards, Vithur

This is what I came up with: As expected, AR Rahman won the most prestigious film award in the globe. As expected, he thanked his mother (“Mere paas maa hai,†he joked, invoking a line from Deewar that, unfortunately, no one in the audience understood), all his musicians from Chennai and Mumbai, and above all, God. This is the first time Tamil was spoken on the Oscar stage (“Ella pugazhum iraivan oruvanukke,†Rahman said, meaning that all praise goes to the Almighty). This is the first time an Indian won two Oscars. So it would all seem to add up to something big. But the victory of Slumdog Millionaire is just a flash in the pan, a sweet little feel-good moment and nothing else. As several people have pointed out, it’s first and foremost a British film, not an Indian film, and among the reasons for its success are that it followed the Hollywood model of storytelling, familiar to audiences worldwide. (The Bollywood elements were merely spicy gravy.) So the grand night at the Oscars doesn’t imply that Mumbai will have to gear up for an avalanche of production crews from other parts of the globe. There’s Gandhi as a precedent. It won eight Oscars †and what happened? It was nearly three decades before Danny Boyle landed up with his crew and told a story about India. Slumdog Millionaire will go down in Oscar history as a kind of Rocky, a film that was hugely loved during its time and now remembered mainly as the film that put Sylvester Stallone on the map. And the person put on the map, this time, is AR Rahman. He may find doors opening to him in Hollywood. But it is still the traditional symphonic score that drives most of Hollywood, so is important that Rahman capitalise on his win and bag a few “non-exotic†projects, so that he doesn’t become the go-to guy only when a “Bollywood-style†Jai Ho number is needed. (This isn’t to say that Rahman should reject any such offers., but he should also look out for projects that allow him to stretch.) But all that can wait. Let’s just savour his win for now. This is a moment that’s not likely top be repeated, at least not via projects made within the country. The wise minds that submit films for Oscar consideration (in the foreign film category) always manage to pick movie that underwhelm, so even that solitary Oscar doesn’t look likely. And this only makes Rahman’s double win so special †a global recognition for a truly global musician.

Maniratnam's Robot! Hindustan times now. . . .Wonder when our media will reach those standards! On Thu, Feb 26, 2009 at 7:07 PM, Vithur vith...@gmail.com wrote: A smiling yet modest AR Rahman, who made a triumphant return home on Thursday after winning two Oscars for the music of the film *Slumdog Millionaire*, said his victory would change apprehensions about Indian music in the West and was a starting point for him as well. My biggest dream to connect people through music has come true. In a world where there are enough reasons to separate us, the Oscars have unified us, Rahman told reporters at the Kodak Theatre. Let's forget about the East and West divide now - it's the closeness now that has happened. There used to be a lot of apprehensions earlier for Indian music in the West but this award has changed that perception. Rahman won two golden statuettes for *Slumdog Millionaire *for best original score and best original song for *Jai Ho*. They were among the eight Academy Awards bagged by the film by British director Danny Boyle about an underdog-wins story set in India. He also ruled out a political role for himself. I am a musician first and last and have no apirations for any political activity or office, Rahman said while reacting to suggestions from reporters about accepting a nomination to the Rajya Sabha. Rahman skirted the issue of Sri Lankan Tamils caught in the crossfire between the army and the rebel Tamil Tigers. Neither the Oscar ceremony nor this stage are forums to raise political issues. While I may be personally against any harm to any human being, I also feel that Tamils should get protection in a peaceful atmosphere in Sri Lanka, I am above politics, Rahman said. With his trademark humility and simplicity, the composer said the song, *Jai Ho*, which won an Oscar, may not have been his best to date. It may not have been my best. However, the songs matched the sensibilities of Western audiences with its rhythm, burst of energy and joy and resulted in a huge impact, Rahman said. The series of awards has got me so much of respect. All the legends like Mick Jagger and others talk to me like equals now - that's great. We can do collaborations and some extraordinary work in the future, he added. As for his future plans, he said: I would continue to work in Tamil films - as much as I do in Hollywood - provided the projects excite me. Apart from two golden statuettes, Rahman also bagged the Golden Globes award and British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) trophy for an original score in Danny Boyle's rags-to-riches drama *Slumdog Millionaire*. The film, that has won eight Oscars, has also been controversies' favourite child in India for highlighting the impoverished underbelly of the country. But Rahman said the film did not hurt anyone's sensibilities - either because of its name *Slumdog Millionaire *or for showing India's underbelly. Dog is not an expletive, Rahman said. According to Rahman, the film focussed attention on Asia's biggest slum - Dharavi - in Mumbai and its children. If they (the producers) had made the film with a dirty mind, it would not have got an Oscar. The film shows India in a positive light. It shows that India is a developing nation. It gives so much mileage to India, he said. He said: I got the Oscar for all of them who wanted to get an Oscar in this country. So I got two of them. I want the future generation to feel confident that anyone can get an Oscar. It's an important award. It's a starting point even in my career as the Oscar is for my work in the film and not my entire talent. I am not saying that I am the biggest or anything. I am a composer and the only message that I want to give through my music is peace and harmony. One should have a good intention and work through it and they will definitely be successful. Rahman's future projects include a film with Mani Ratnam's *Robot* and * Blue*. Apart from Rahman, Resul Pookutty too won an Oscar for sound mixing in *Slumdog Millionaire*. Rahman said his Oscars were akin to the national award he won for his maiden film *Roja*. That award established me nationally and the Oscars have made me internationally known. Else, I am the same, Rahman said. http://www.hindustantimes.com/StoryPage/StoryPage.aspx?sectionName=HomePageid=929e13ba-bce8-4a01-848c-2007fb8be88fMatchID1=4934TeamID1=3TeamID2=1MatchType1=1SeriesID1=1248MatchID2=4925TeamID3=4TeamID4=2MatchType2=1SeriesID2=1244PrimaryID=4934Headline=My+Oscars+will+connect+people%3a+AR+Rahman -- regards, Vithur
[arr] Time for Indian movies to go global?
Now I hope there would be reverse effect. . Like Kamal said it is time for Indian movies to go global. But as a matter of fact there's nothing truly global. Everybody has affiliations and preferences and a social/personal context based on which they view things. Not interests, only emotions are global - love, peace, happiness, compassion and so on. It's a challenge to make a movies that connects across many cultures incorporating those emotions. SDM achieved it. Many Indian directors have the potential to make such movies and have made such movies in the past. There are many naysayers of popular Indian movies 'terming' it as 'masala'. Yes, some are downright stupid, but so are movies in any languages and there are 'intelligent' movies in any language. Movies are primarily a medium of entertainment and art, message is just a by-product. Not everyone in the world think that Western movies are the best; they cater to certain sensibilities. Degree of fusion has been and will continually increase in any field, films being no exception. Indian movies have been borrowing heavily from western movies and Hollywood has always been open to innovation. I feel, now other non-english film industries will also increase collaboration and there will certainly be influences. Rahman himself is doing a Indo-Japanese movie. Yes, the barriers are getting broken. But that should not destroy our own identity. Loosing a language is loosing millenniums of knowledge. Sadly, that is what is happening to many cultures and languages. The whole challenge will be not to loose our own identity in this immense crossovers which is happening. For example, there's is no one tamil/hindi movie recently which has 100% native language dialogues. Classical music have almost ceased being part of mainstream movies. Well this is a larger issue every country is facing - the side effects of globalisation. Hope the debate of sustainable globalisation evolves a practical framework for a harmonious global culture, without loosing essential local culture. Rahman is a step in that direction. He is firmly rooted to Raagas, but doesn't limit himself there. He seamlessly crosses every boundaries in creating a global sound. Rahman sets the right example. 2009/2/26 Mahima Sengupta mahiya_is_mind_blow...@yahoo.com I fully agree with you there Mr. Anand though I won't qauntify. Ideally I would like to see ARR doing not more than 5 movies a year (I international, 3 Hindi and 1 Tamil). He is known more for quality than quantity and I am sure he will keep this in mind in spite of going to be inundated with offers. I guess the likes of Karan Johar and Aditya Chopra would now want to work with him just to get their names tagged with a Academy Award winner though they might probably live to regret they never got a chance . As for scoring in Tamil, first the directors over there would need to pull up their socks and raise their standards to the level of AG, ROM or MR before ARR can do more projects. I don’t want to see a talent like ARR getting involved in crap projects in Tamil. My major worry is how he is going to manage the different time zones. I hope he gets enough rest. I think ARR is a kind of whiz kid blessed by his spirituality and in which ever industry he arrived (Kolly, Bolly or Holly) he did so with a bang so he is going to continue to do so in future. After an acclaimed book, an Oscar sweeping film, `Slumdog Millionaire' filmmakers are now gearing up to take over Broadway as they plan a stage musical of the 8 Oscar winning film. The project has been taken up with the wise intentions of securing a sound future for the children featured in the film. The receipts raised from the musical will be transferred to the funds set up for the betterment of Mumbai's slum kids. Producer Christian Colson, who is determined to bring about a change, had earlier set up a fund that has already generated close to a whooping Rs 3.6 crore for the children. And if plans for cover versions of Rahman's songs are realised, the money raised could multiply manifold; Christian was quoted as telling the The Times, London. The funds would then be pumped back into Mumbai where the movie was filmed. The dream team of the film is also looking at various alternatives to safeguard the future of two children from the slums — Azharuddin Mohammed, 10, and nine-year-old Rubina Qureshi. His father passes away when Dileep is just nine. The family subsists on hiring out musical equipment to leading composers. *1977:* Rahman joins Ilayaraja as keyboardist after training with Master Dhanraj. He also plays for M. S. Viswanathan and Ramesh Naidu and with Zakir Hussain, Kunnakudi Vaidyanathan and L. Asha Bhosle returns to high-tide with Yai re and Tanha tanha after a lull. *1996:* More of Rahman’s films are dubbed, with indifferent results except for Hindustani (Indian). But the Tamil scenario is still upbeat with Love Birds and Kadhal Desam. Rahman also scores the background music for his first crossover film Fire. And Minsaara Kanavu wins Rahman his second National award. *1997:* Sapnay, the dubbed version of the 1996 hit marks the debut of singer KK with Strawberry aankhen, a top name today, and the breakthrough of Hema Sardesai with Awara bhanwre. It begins his long association with Javed Akhtar. Sony Music (now Sony-BMG) signs Rahman as their first-ever South Asian artiste for the hit album Vande Mataram. The Tamil hits include Iruvar, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan’s debut. *1998:* The composer storms the charts with Mani Ratnam’s first original Hindi film, Dil Se…, ending the struggle of singer Sukhwinder Singh with Chal chhaiyya chhaiyya, and the singer’s association with him will now peak with the Oscar nomination for Jai ho from Slumdog Millionaire. The same is true of his journey with Gulzar, whose best phase as a top lyricist begins. The film also features his first song with Lata Mangeshkar, Jiya jale. Also released this year is Jeans. *1999:* Rahman finally makes a proper pan-Indian breakthrough with Subhash Ghai’s Taal, a musical love story that wins him his first Screen award. In the same year, Deepa Mehta’s Earth is released in Hindi as 1947 with a highly-appreciated, underrated but not-too-popular score. These two films cement his association with Ghai and Anand Bakshi (till his death in 2002), Javed Akhtar and Aamir Khan. He also tours Germany with Michael Jackson in the Michael Jackson Friends Concert. *2000:* Rahman scores his first home production of a Mumbai hero - Anil Kapoor, in Pukar. This is also the first of his only two films with Phalke laureate lyricist Majrooh Sultanpuri. The Tamil side is noted for Kandukondain Kandukondain and Thenali. *2001:* Lagaan, Aamir Khan’s first film, wins

Almost got the sense that they thought I was irrational in my love for Rahman. Whenever something related to Rahman came up, like a new album, I would talk about it so excitedly, almost like a little girl squealing with delight over a new dress or something like that. Most of the reactions would be just to turn their backs, walk away, or smile weakly, or change the subject! They just couldn't understand the passion. But, now, after all these years of success, awards, global recognition, it's a different story. Whenever I talk about Rahman excitedly, they listen. They want to know more. They too start talking about Rahman on their own somtimes. Although they don't feel as passionately about Rahman like I do, I sense that I'm taken more seriously, better understood as to why I love him so much. It took a global success story to make others understand my love for him. And those who used to react sarcastically to my love for Rahman are now quiet, secretly but shamefully admitting to themselves that Rahman is indeed really someone special in this whole world and not just another glorified Indian MD. Feels great!

Is Rahman still associated with Airtel? That’s why I am here today.” – AR Rahman on winning his second Oscar. The Mozart from Madras created history on February 23, 2009 in Los Angeles and sent entire India into a euphoric frenzy. A special mention here for the hugely talented Resul Pookutty as well, who brought home the third Oscar for Sound Mixing. The reverberations of Rahman’s two Oscar wins will be felt for a long time and also celebrated by brands that the music maestro endorses. Rahman’s association with these brands has been long and epoch making. He has given them a lot of credibility, respect, immense value addition in terms of brand positioning and a lot of social causes that the brands got associated with through him. Congratulating Rahman, Sunil Bharti Mittal, Chairman and Group CEO, Bharti Enterprises, said, “The global acclaim for ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ mirrors the growth story of India. This signals the arrival of India on the world entertainment stage. In particular, AR Rahman’s unique double Oscar win has made all of us very proud. Airtel has shared a long friendship with Rahman, who composed the Airtel signature tune, which is synonymous with the brand today. Our heartiest congratulations to Rahman and the entire ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ team.” Nearly two years back, the opening song of Spike Lee’s movie ‘Inside Man’ had made many in the audience feel that a wrong soundtrack was being played. But as the air cleared, it made every Indian who watched that movie enjoy the magic of Rahman’s music in a Hollywood flick for the first time. The song was ‘Chaiya Chaiya’, originally from the SRK-starrer ‘Dil Se’. Rahman had also enthralled the London West End with his music for Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical ‘Bombay Dreams’. Thus, even before the Oscars, Rahman had introduced the world to his unique brand of melody. The Golden Statuettes are just a culmination of that popularity. The road to the Oscars was paved with wins at the British Academy Award (BAFTA) and Golden Globe. An exclusive note from Airtel gives a brief history of Rahman’s association with the brand. The music maestro became Airtel’s brand ambassador in 2002. The brand campaign for Airtel in 2002 featuring Rahman was the first time he appeared in a television commercial. When Rahman composed the tune, Airtel had two million customers. Today, Airtel claims to have over 90 million customers. The Airtel signature tune composed by Rahman is stated to be the world’s most downloaded piece of mobile music with over 60 million downloads. Incidentally, this tune has made its appearance in several forms, including car reverse music. Chandrasekar Radhakrishnan, Senior VP - Marketing, Airtel, said, “We would like to congratulate AR Rahman for winning the most coveted prize in world cinema and setting new benchmarks for the Indian music industry. Our association with Rahman goes back a long way. He embodies the Airtel value of leadership and trust in his field of music. Music is a key platform for Airtel to express the brand – exhibited through various products and associations. With time, he has become synonymous with the music of our brand through the evergreen Airtel tune, background scores for key advertising campaigns and his presence in music sponsorships/ associations. Rahman is without doubt one of the finest artists that our country has seen and Airtel is proud of the achievements of its brand ambassador in the world arena.” Speaking on Rahman as a brand ambassador, Ramnuj Shastry, CCO, Rediffusion YR, said, “AR Rahman’s Oscar feat is just a worldwide acknowledgement of something that we Indians always knew – that the man is a genius. Rahman, who has scored the Airtel tune, has been a brand ambassador of Airtel for the longest time. Through the universal language of music, he has always done what Airtel stands for – breaking barriers. And these awards shall just re-emphasise the fact that both the brand and the brand ambassador are world class.” Rediffusion YR is the creative agency for Airtel. Rahman has also been Nokia’s brand ambassador quite a few times. Other than being associated with Nokia’s various products and features, he had taken up the social cause of eradicating poverty and facilitating education for under-privileged children by joining hands with Nokia NSeries. Rahman’s Oscar wins has Chennai FM stations and other music media in a frenzy to celebrate the maestro’s feat. Big FM Chennai has rolled out programmes where Rahman’s songs are being played on-air throughout the day. Listeners are invited to call up on-air and

[arr] India Celebrates a Hollywood Victory
http://www.nytimes.com/2009/02/24/world/asia/24india.html?ref=world NEW DELHI — Its depictions of filth and brutality fueled angry blogging and stray street protests. It drew unusually intense scrutiny, from how much its child actors were paid to what the composer A.R. Rahman would wear to the Oscars. But on Monday, as Indiahttp://topics.nytimes.com/top/news/international/countriesandterritories/india/index.html?inline=nyt-geo woke up to news of the spectacular wins by Slumdog Millionaire at the Academy Awards, this movie-mad country went Jai Ho. The victory by Slumdog was embraced as India's own. What a day it has been for India! gushed a television news anchor mid- morning. It dominated television news throughout the day. News of a hepatitis B outbreak in western Gujarat State and a southern politician's threatened hunger strike seemed minor news by comparison. We rocked the world, an Indian percussionist named Sivamani declared. Never mind that Slumdog tells a story of stunted, shafted slum children, precisely a story that promoters of the New India have diligently sought to obscure with tales of prosperity and bling. India seized on its Oscar wins as a sign of its arrival on the world stage. Indian television showed Indian dancers in spangly skirts on stage at the Kodak Theater in Los Angeles and Mr. Rahman, eyes closed, singing the title track, Jai Ho — an exuberant Hindi phrase that literally translates as victory. Mr. Rahman thanked God and his mother. Resul Pookutty, who shared the prize for sound mixing, dedicated it to his country. In his small town in south India, neighbors and kin were shown passing a big plate of sweets and crying tears of joy. India has made a clean sweep here, Anil Kapoor, the Indian actor who played the game-show host in Slumdog, declared in an interview with NDTV, a private television station. On Monday, even the Indian prime minister, Manmohan Singhhttp://topics.nytimes.com/top/reference/timestopics/people/s/manmohan_singh/index.html?inline=nyt-per, congratulated the Slumdog team, along with the makers of Smile Pinki, a short documentary about a village girl with a cleft palate. The winners have done India proud, Singh's office said in a statement. The statement did not specify whether the prime minister, who is recovering from heart surgery, had seen either movie. The last time an Indian won an Oscar was for costume design for the 1982 biographical film, Gandhi, by Richard Attenborough. Many Indians were peeved at the time that a known Indian actor had not been cast to play the father of their nation. Ben Kingsleyhttp://topics.nytimes.com/top/reference/timestopics/people/k/ben_kingsley/index.html?inline=nyt-per, who had been cast as Gandhi, is of partial Indian descent. Slumdog, of course, is not an Indian film. It was backed by two American studios. The director, Danny Boyle, is British, as is the producer and screenplay writer, who adapted the script from a book by an Indian diplomat. But Slumdog has almost entirely an Indian cast, along with a British actor of Indian descent, Dev Kapoor, who plays the teenaged lead, Jamal. It is shot on the streets of Mumbai, unlike most Indian films. About third of the dialogue is in Hindi, which is the case these days for some Bollywood movies. It has several key Indian crew members, including a co-director, Loveleen Tandan, a cameraman experienced in shooting on Mumbai's mad streets, Suneil Khandkar, and of course, Mr. Rahman, whose compositions weave sounds from all over the world with a deeply Indian sensibility. Most important, Slumdog picks up on key motifs of the classic Bollywood fairy tale: the plucky underdog hero, sibling rivalry, ghetto gangsters and a beautiful damsel needing a rescue. Small bursts of outrage greeted the film when it first opened, including a protest in front of Mr. Kapoor's house several weeks ago, where children held up placards that read Don't call me dog. In this week's issue of India Today, a weekly magazine, a filmmaker named Priyadarshan called it absolute and intentional exploitation of India. India is not Somalia, he wrote. We are one of the foremost nuclear powers in the world, our satellites are roaming the universe. Amitabh Bachchan, the original underdog hero of 1980s Indian cinema, pointed out in his blog several weeks ago that a murky underbelly exists and thrives even in the most developed nations. On Monday, he went on to congratulate its Oscar winners. Vir Sanghvi, writing in his blog on Monday, said he was thrilled by the victory by Slumdog and the sight of so many Indians on stage at the Academy Awards. Even when Gandhi won the Oscar for Best Picture all those years ago, we never felt that it was India's victory, he wrote. I don't know if this is a breakthrough for India or whether we will be able to follow it up. But some things seem clear. Anil Kapoor is now the world's most famous Bollywood actor — and it couldn't happen to a nicer guy. Nobody will be able to talk
[arr] Kodambakkam to Hollywood - a journey to remember
Chennai (PTI): From almost quitting the industry due to financial constraints to a his double-Oscar win, the journey of A R Rahman from Madras' Kodambakkam to Hollywood has been a path filled with thorns and obstacles. The successful journey of this soft-spoken man, who stepped into his father's shoes at an early age of nine, is a source of inspiration for many a youth in the country. Rahman began his career in Chennai's Kodambakkam, where the film industry is located, as a keyboard player in legendary South Indian musician Illayaraja's troupe in the 1970s and went on to compose jingles for advertisements. He was forced to shoulder the family responsibilities after his father died due to illness when Rahman was just nine years old. Due to this burden, Rahman could never get proper education in his early days. This was evident when his mother once said she will feel bad forever for not giving opportunity for Rahman to get educated well. He first came to light with his jingles for Leo Coffee, Bombay Dyeing and Titan advertisements in the 1980s and he almost quit the industry as he could not continue due to financial constraints. Then came the break for the music composer when noted filmmaker Maniratnam approached him to score composition for his Roja, after seeing him performing at a awards ceremony function. After the remarkable success of Roja, there was no looking back for Rahman, who his close friends in the industry call him a humble personality. From the very early days when we both worked for advertisements to this day, one thing has not changed with Rahman. That is his humbleness, noted cinematographer Rajiv Menon said. What made Rahman's music click with the listeners was the refreshing use of percussions, sound and melody, most of which were inspired from the Indian folk music. Rahman, who is fondly called as Isai Puyal in Tamil, has rendered music for over 150 films in Tamil and he always respected his mother tongue, which came to the fore today when he said Ella pughalum iraivanuke after receiving the Oscars. Another close friend of Rahman and noted Tamil lyricist Vairamuthu attributed the music composer's Oscar win to his sincerity and dedication towards work and humbleness. He is a very humble man. He is simply simple and down-to-earth. I am proud of Rahman, especially as a person who wrote lyrics for 90 per cent of his songs, he said. Rahman, who is rarely seen at public functions, is a person who devotes most of his spare time to spend with his large family, consisting of mother, wife, three children and four sisters.

The superstar said that it was the happiest day for the Indians and the film industry. International recognition for Indian film talent on one of the most well known and popular forums is the happiest day and the industry. The journey of Indian Cinema has been phenomenal, Bachchan added on his blog. It was a twin win for Chennai-born Rahman, as he took home two trophies first in the Best Original Score category for his music in Slumdog Millionaire and the second which he had won along with lyricist Gulzar for song Jai Ho from the same film. Ironically, just a few days ago Bachchan wrote on his blog criticising Slumdog Millionaire for glorifying the poverty and the slums of Mumbai. However, the actor later retracted back on his statements and the post was immediately scraped off his blog.

This was the one half-surprise in an evening of few big upsets. The oddsmakers had Penn tabbed as a slight underdog to Golden Globe winner Mickey Rourke, whose performance in *The Wrestler* had all the earmarks of a sentimental Hollywood comeback. (See pictures of Mickey Rourke.http://www.time.com/time/photoessays/10questions/0,30255,1874436,00.html ) Viewed as a whole, the top awards spanned genres that represent commercial moviemaking as it is, was and would like to be. The would like to be: the message films *Milk* and *The Reader*, which hammer home Hollywood's liberal views on gays and unslakable fascination with the Holocaust. And the was:*Slumdog*. With its skimpy budget ($14 million) and mongrel pedigree, it might seem the odd dog out; but the movie is really classic old-Hollywood — not just in its inspirational story of a poor kidhttp://link.brightcove.com/services/link/bcpid1485842900/bctid13419832001 pursuing an impossible dream, but in its goal of keeping a mass movie audience entertained. If Hollywood nativists are rankled that the top prize and the headlines went to the foreign-est movie ever to conquer the Oscar, the feeling may be similar on the subcontinent, where *Slumdog*'s box office take hasn't approached that of any robust local film. As pleased as they might be about the picture's international éclat, the folks in Mumbaihttp://www.time.com/time/arts/article/0,8599,1873926,00.html also realize that the first Bollywood production to make a major impact at the Academy was written, produced and directed by Englishmen — subjects of

*Richard Corliss - 11:02 PM: *It happens that A.R. Rahman, the guy whose acceptance speeches we just slept through, is the best-selling recording artist in world history. In India they're not sleeping, they're cheering. Mind you, it's morning there, so they're not as drowsy as we are. But this medley really is nuts: Rahman's two songs from SLUMDOG don't have much in common, musically or any other way, with Peter Gabriel's theme from WALL-E. And to Alicia and Zac: it's pronounced Rah-man, not Rock-mahn.

[arr] What is AR Rahman's greatest ever film soundtrack? (Poll by Sidin on Livemint)
Poll here - http://answers.polldaddy.com/poll/1395414/ http://blogs.livemint.com/blogs/lounge/archive/2009/02/23/what-is-ar-rahman-s-greatest-ever-film-soundtrack.aspx With all due credit to the Mozart of Madras (Chopin of Chennai?), *Slumdog Millionaire *is not the maestro's best work by some distance. Over the last 17 years and over 100 film soundtracks Rahman has produced several tracks that will be remembered long after Jai Ho and Oh Saya. From *Roja *in 1992, which remains one of his best, to *Delhi-6* this year, which some think IS his best, Rahman's repertoire is so versatile that picking a best from the lot is a challenge. My first experience with Rahman was when my maternal cousins from Sharjah (where else) came over one weekend and played the *Bombay *and *Gentleman *tapes non-stop back to back for 48 hours. In something that became rare for me with Rahman in the years hence, I took to Chikku Bukku and Antha Arabi Kadaloram almost immediately. By the end of that week the music was beginning to drive my dad nuts. He couldn't believe that the same guy who made *Roja *would make these songs with all the screaming and table tennis balls. Also released in the early 90s was Rahman's only work for a Malayalam movie, 1992's *Yodha *which had the immensely memorable Padakali song which became a fave drinking song in college later. (Any idea why he never went cross-border since then? Your guess is as good as mine.) The first half of that decade saw Rahman produce music in quality and quantity. And it culminated in 1995 with *Bombay *and*Rangeela*, two albums that truly made him a national icon. (While Rajni purists will disagree, the *Muthu *soundtrack of that year was not too bad. The triumpant woodwind intro to Oruvan Oruvan still gives me goosebumps. Even if on screen Rajni would overtake a bus with a horse cart, as only he can.) It is one of the non-Tamil speaking world's great losses that Mani Ratnam's *Iruvar *never made it big and that the music never got the audience that other Rahman crossovers did. *Iruvar *is a stunning, audacious album that went with an audacious film. He won his second national award for music direction with *Minsara Kanavu* ( *Sapnay*) in 1997 and then composed the superb soundtrack to *Dil Se...* in 1998. I rank 1999 among the best years in ARR's career. *Taal*, *Kadhalar Dinam*, *Sangamam *and *Taj Mahal* shared the spotlight with a personal favourite * Takshak*. Rahman won his god-only-knows-how-many-th Tamil Nadu state award for Sangamam, a gritty, earthy album suffuse with folk style music. Of all of Rahman's Tamil-only albums, 2000's *Kandukondein Kandukondein* has the most crossover appeal. I know several people who don't understand a word of the lyrics to the songs, who love the music. Including one of my editors. *Lagaan *in 2001, *Boys *in 2003 and *Yuva *plus *Swades *in 2004 were all superb albums. Pardon me while I zip across to 2006 and *Rang De Basanti*, an album that won even Daler Mehndi critical acclaim. RDB, like *Iruvar*, is an album that is difficult to appreciate fully without the film it propels. Both were excellent albums but were also, let's say, director's albums. Which brings us to 2007's *Guru *and 2008's *Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na*, *Jodhaa Akbar*, And *Slumdog Millionaire*. Peruse that list of three movies to get a sense of the man's variety. Cotton candy college music? Wokay! Spiritual Sufi number? Double Wokay! Triumphant closing anthem? I would like to thank the Academy! And now we have *Delhi-6*. Over idly-sambar recently one of my editors mentioned that Rahman's work in *Delhi-6* is almost a statement. A cocky statement that he could do whatever he wanted to, compose anything, any genre and get away with it. And boy does he get away with it. Genda Phool is on permanent loop in my head waiting to be replaced by Rahman's next super hit. Finally, drum roll, what is my all time favourite Rahman album? His 1993 Tamil track *Pudhiya Mugam*, which was remade in Hindi as * Vishwavidaata *in 1997, remains my personal fave. It is a soppy, sentimental album but still an uplifting one supported by superb lyrics by Vairamuthu. To me the album is faultless. And timeless. But what is your favourite AR Rahman movie soundtrack of all time? Click on the poll below to tell us. And add your own movie name if you don't agree with my top 5 (Rang De Basanti, Roja, Pudhiya Mugam, Delhi 6 and Lagaan.) plus Slumdog Millionaire.
