Longlease Updates at last!!!

2003-09-17 Thread Jean Cheesman
Hi Folks,

At last have done some Longlease Updates in the middle of all this move to
the new Berner-l home

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Berner-l/

Phew! Only five pages tonight but I feel I am finally catching up and
getting life back to normal again.

Two new Puppy Fix pics on the Friends Gallery!

Tika, who went by ferry from England to Ireland and the pics are taken four
hours after she arrived in her new home and made friends with Holly,
settling in nicely, more to come. And Cabot, beautiful photo of him that was
the inspiration for one of Michael Johnson's Berner Pup paintings. (Have had
Michael's very latest painting in, that for tomorrow's updates!)

Sadly, three Tribute Pages! Mikki, Chris and Herb Baker's beloved veteran
girl; Oberon, still sadly missed by Ann Lee: and Willy, lost to Histio, and
loved so much by Dana Neuman and Family!

More pics to come tomorrow!

All Love,

Jean, Sunny, Sim, Barney and the Longlease Gang

Subject: [Berner-l] Bacchus and Ari photo

I was able to send a pic of Bacchus and Ari to the group photo page. Bacchus
is doing well with something a little stronger for pain. Still eating like
crazy. But his breathing is shallower and he is panting more.

I think the reality of losing Ari really hit me over the weekend. I must
have been running on adrenaline last week, and I was still in shock and
numb. But, even though I knew how close Ari and I were, it hit me like a ton
of bricks. She was literally rarely further away from me than arms length.
Like she was always at my fingertips. My shadow.

Ari's bill is almost completely paid. I'm sending out thank-you cards to
those of you who mailed help for her. It'll keep me busy. But those of you
who called in for Ari, I have to thank you publicly. They were worried at
the vets that maybe they shouldn't give me the names for security purposes.
And some people asked to remain anonymous. So to each and every one of you,
thank you so much. And to those who have sent prayers, inspirational
thoughts, advice, support and love.thank you, too.

Love

Cathi with Bacchus

We need to migrate everyone over to the new Berner-L. For those of you
who are not familiar with yahoogroups, I don't think it will be
difficult for you, honest! You'll need to sign up for an account, go to:
http://www.yahoogroups.com
Once you are signed up, you can search for the group Berner-L and go
ahead and join. Or you can join by sending an email to:
[EMAIL PROTECTED]

There is a small problem, isn't there always! When there are more than 200
members of a group on yahoo, they don't handle the membership list the same
way. Instead of a real time update, they update the members periodically.
What this means is that you will be a member, you will be able to post, you
will be able to read the posts on the group page, but you will not receive
emails for several days. There seems to be about a 4 day delay.

But don't distress.

You are still able to post to the group though this one will not show up!

You can catch up with what's going on from the Group Home Page
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Berner-l/

Don't know if you know this, as member of other yahoo groups you might, but
I've been surprised how many people don't! :-)

If you click on Messages in the left column to get the full page with the
back posts, bottom of that page is Expand Messages. Brings them up in Digest
form without all the ads.

Please switch over as soon as you can, so my fingers don't fall off
notifying everyone personally.

Bacchus

2003-09-13 Thread bernerlover
Okay, now I am freaking out again. I have heard Bacchus yelp several times
over the past few days. But, just now, he growled at me. Not a viscious,
snarling growl. The quiet, polite rumbling that I've heard when Ari got into
his personal space during a nap. He was immediately apologetic. But still. I
know my boy. This is not like him. He has never, ever grumbled at me. Ever.
I know what it's like to be in pain, and I've snapped and growled myself at
a lot of people.

I just laid on the rug beside him and cried. I can't believe this. Not so
quick, not so soon.please.

BARC Rescue Information

2003-09-12 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Forwarded for Amy Kessler:

A few weeks ago, I, on behalf of BARC, asked you to help us rescue a puppy
in need (her name is Xena). Unfortunately, illness, a trip to the hospital
and the sobig computer virus put me and my computer out-of-commission for a
time. I am just now able to get back to you.

When BARC (through my e-mail message to you) asked for help I told you that
we would provide more detail when the pup was safe. She is now safe with
BARC in Kansas and we are in the process of preparing her to go to her
forever home.

This rescue situation came about when a breeder in Germany sold a puppy as a
pet. The puppy's buyer (who also lives in Germany) represented himself to
the breeder as a person looking for a family pet. In fact, he is a dog
broker, who, with a family member in the U.S. (also a dog broker),
sells/brokers dogs here in the States. A BMDCA member discovered the puppy's
situation through contacts she had made while monitoring imported dogs that
were being offered for sale. She made contact with an individual in the
Swiss club and together with a couple of other people, they asked BARC for
assistance in rescuing the puppy and finding her a loving home.

Thanks to your responsiveness and generous donations, BARC was able to
purchase this puppy and also pay for her vet and other expenses (e.g., air
transportation). We are happy to report that Xena will be going to a new
home as soon as she recovers from her spay.

The generosity of the people involved with this breed is overwhelming and
BARC is honored to have you as supporters. There are no words in the
English language that fully express our gratitude to all of you who offered
and continue to offer help when we need it.

In case there is any confusion, BARC's process for placing this puppy is the
same procedure applied to all BARC puppy placements. Her health and
temperament are evaluated. We use this information to ensure the best
possible match between her needs and what a prospective adoptive home can
offer. As with all BARC puppies, a sterilization surgery is scheduled and
performed (in Xena's case, a spay surgery). Current BARC puppy adoption
applications are being reviewed and, using the same standards applied to
other BARC puppy placements, she will be placed soon in a forever home.

The only difference between this puppy and our normal auction/kennel
liquidation rescues is that BARC was asked by an individual in a foreign
parent club to help and we did. Because this puppy was born within a
governing parent club, she was evaluated by their litter inspectors, as are
all puppies registered within their club. This particular puppy and her
littermates received a high rating in litter quality and because of that, a
comment was made (NOT by people within BARC), that it is a shame that she
would be spayed and would BARC consider leaving her intact and placing her
in a home with a well-respected breeder.

Because of the novelty of this situation and out of respect for the source
of one such comment, BARC's board discussed this particular puppy's
situation at an annual face-to-face board meeting in Des Moines, Iowa on
September 6th. The BARC board was unanimous in it's view that this puppy
should NOT be treated differently than any other BARC rescue. True, she was
not from a scumbag puppy miller or an auction, but she IS BARC's forever
responsibility and, as a BARC rescue, she would be spayed and placed in a
home as a companion animal.

I hope this somewhat belated e-mail provides our supporters with an update
on little Xena's status and clears up any misinformation that some of you
may have received. In the future, if anyone ever has a question about BARC
or concern about the processes used by BARC in placing our rescues, please
feel free to contact BARC directly. BARC's telephone number is 913-837-3129
or my home number is 913-837-4635. We will be happy to answer any questions
you may have.

Again, a huge thank you to those of you who helped make it possible for us
to create a happy life for little Xena (as contrasted to one ended too soon
from spending it in a dirty cage as an uncaring miller's brood bitch). We
know that none of what BARC does could be done with out your big-hearted and
generous support.

Amy Kessler

Ear Problem

2003-09-12 Thread STEVEN SQUILLANTE
Rose,

Thanks for making a good point.

One thing I would like to add is that nothing should be put into a
dog's
ear without the vet first examining the eardrum. What looks like a
nasty
yeasty ear can be a whole host of bad things cooking one of which is
pseudynomous which destroys the eardrum.

Veterinarian evaluation of the dogs ears is a must before using Blue
Power for the reasons stated in your post. That is noted as a caution on
the web site.

http://www.itsfortheanimals.com/BLUE.HTM

In my case, my dog had been under vet care for an extended period of
time. We tried Alocetic Ear Cleaner, which is alcohol free, Foaming
Sensitive Ear Cleaner and Otimax all to no avail. Only the Blue Power
seemed to help and did not seem to bother the dog as much as the vet
prescribed ear cleaners.

But! your point should be well taken. The ear problem needs to be
diagnosed by a vet.

Thanks,
Steve

Very Important - Yahoo Group berner-l

2003-09-11 Thread Jean Cheesman
Hi Folks,

A few pointers for those of you who have not joined the new berner-l on
Yahoo Groups or have joined but are not yet receiving your Mails or Digest
from there yet!!!

You don't have to have full Yahoo Web Membership to join this Group, this
means you won't be able to fully access all the Group Facilities like the
Photos and Files sections but since we haven't yet put these into use yet!!!

To join go to the Group Home Page
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Berner-l/
and click on the Join this group!

If you have already joined, will tell you that you are a Member of this
Group.

Yahoo is being very slow at processing the new members to add them to the
list, but over 500 folks have come in already in just a few days. If you are
not yet receiving your Mails or Digests from the new Group do not worry, you
will still be able to Post the Group and you can view the Messages online!
And no you don't have to click your frustrated way through the pop ups and
ads Click on Messages in the left column of the Home Page, that will
bring up a full page of the last 30 posts. At the bottom of the page, is
Expand Messages. This gives you the messages in a nifty Digest form without
the ads! You can view all the earlier posts too, using the Previous/Next
buttons.

Oh, and if you are not full Yahoo Web Member, do not fret! I will know who
you are (shows on the Members List) and will be able to send you
instructions on what to do!!

Hope this helps!!

If you have any more queries here, mail me personal,

Hi Steven,

ear without the vet first examining the eardrum. What looks like a nasty
yeasty ear can be a whole host of bad things cooking one of which is
pseudynomous which destroys the eardrum. Some medications are not
appropriate for dogs with ear drum damage and I certainly wouldn't be
wanting to put alcohol in in such a case. Persistant ears problems should
be cultured. Many home remedies are fine for cleaning the external ear but
caution should be used when liquids dribble into the ear.

RE: Megaesophagus

2003-09-11 Thread Maureen Barry
snip
Diva was diagnosed with MEGAESOPHAGUS.
Her only symptoms are occ. wheezing gulping of
her food.
snip
Does anyone know about this condition do you have
any helpful
advice?

Hi, Terri!

Sorry for the delay in replying ... I've been off-line
for awhile.

My Jake was diagnosed with megaesophagus when he was 6
months old. As your head is spinning now from
information overload, so was mine.

The two drugs of choice to help manage megaesophagus
are cisapride and metaclopramide. Both drugs stimulate
the muscles along the esophagus and should be given 20
or 30 minutes before the dog eats. The dog should sit
after eating for 10 minutes or so, and no exercise -
not even a walk - for an hour after eating.

There are literally thousands of pages on the internet
that discuss megaesophagus. Most pages say that an
afflicted dog will most likely not survive past the
age of two. Megaesophagus itself is not fatal but, if
the dog inhales while it's regurgitating, it could get
pneumonia which must be treated immediately.

Let me stress: do not believe all the horror stories
on the internet. It is often a case of hearing the
worst case scenarios.

My Jake was diagnosed with megaesophagus at 6 months;
he is now 2 1/2 years old and going strong. In fact,
Jake was doing so well that, six weeks ago, I stopped
giving him the metaclopramide pills. I did, however,
keep some on hand in case Jake started regurgitating.
In the past six weeks, Jake has had 4 pills total (2
pills on two occasions), instead of 4 pills a day
every day. Megaesophagus is definitely manageable.

I hope this helps. Feel free to e-mail me privately if
you have any more questions.

Ari and Bacchus, thoughts and pictures

2003-09-11 Thread bernerlover
I miss her. And so does Bacchus. I worried about him Tues and yesterday, he
seemed so depressed. I've been trying to be happy and cheerful for
him.but berners can see right through that. So to compensate, I've been
stuffing his face with everything he'll eat. Bacchus has always been around
115lbs as an adult [give or take a couple of pounds]. I had cut back on
treats a bit, hoping to get maybe 5 lbs off him to help his joints. I was
shocked when he was weighed at the emergency vets, 2 days before Ari. He was
only 104lbs. And then Tuesday he was only 97.

But today he seems more animated.

I have been looking through pictures, literally hundreds, to find one of Ari
to send to Jean. Out of hundreds of photos, there are only a handful of Ari
alone. It is always the two of them, Bacchus and Ari, joined at the hip.

I went to a grief counselor yesterday. She specializes in Pet Bereavement. I
found her on www.pet-loss.net . I clicked on Ohio and was surprised to see
someone here locally. She was very helpful. Knows about bloat and cancers.
Has Akitas and GSD's. I'm going back next week.

Yesterday I got Ari's Angel pin from Karen. So beautiful, so touching, so
meaningful.yet something we dread receiving. I wear it over my heart.

Dear Auntie Pat,

I just want you to know that I don't hold any grudges with you 'cause my
belated 4th Birthday Barbacue got cancelled again!! Not because of the
weather this time but because Jean has been so busy on the 'puter with all
these people who are moving over to this new home. Well, we three Berners
were a bit worried at first until Jean explained that all the dogs were
coming too! Wow! That is some mighty Big Crowd!

Now it seems very confusing to me because it seems like some people are in
two places at the same time at the moment!! And some people are still in the
old place and at the same time almost here. And some people still don't seem
to realise that they have to move by the end of the next two weeks or they
might get left behind and then the old home will be gone and they'll have
nowhere to go. And it's all a bit crowded at the moment with everyone trying
to get inside at the same time but Jean says no-one has to worry. You have
to be patient and you won't miss what's going on 'cause you can still see in
the Windows! (What's that about a Cob Web, Sunny?)

Jean says she will explain it all again but that Aunty Pat will know what I
mean!

Now I hope everything is settling down by October 2nd because that's my
Sister Sunny's 9th Birthday! and we are gonna be very upset if our joint
party gets cancelled!!

So, my fellow Berners out there get leaning on your humans and tell them to
get packing!!

Oh, by the way, if you have already moved or are looking in the Windows
waiting to come in properly that's me and Sunny and Barney's picture on the
wall this week! (What Sunny? Oh, I got that wrong we're on the TV Screen!
Heh! That makes up for missing the Barby!)

Oh, and, Auntie Pat! You said last week that you were coming to Scotland
this week, and it's this week now. When are you coming and are you going to
be in three places at the same time??

Ear Problem

2003-09-10 Thread STEVEN SQUILLANTE
Dear NurseDR,

Consider trying Blue Power Ear Treatment. Buy the ingredients, mix them
and follow the directions outlined on Helen L. Mckinnon's web site;

http://www.itsfortheanimals.com/

The solution is a mixture of Isopropyl alcohol (16oz.) , boric acid (4
tbls), and gention violet solution 1% (16 drops). All ingredients are
available at your local pharmacy. The large chains CVS, Genovese, etc.
do not carry Gention Violet. The small local pharmacy stores usually
have it in stock. The ingredients cost about $6.00.

One of my dogs suffered for well over a year while I tried everything
the vet suggested. My vet bills exceeded $1000. treating ear infections
using vet prescribed meds. I showed my vet the formula for Blue Power
and he advised against using the solution. He's a great vet, just tends
to be conservative. Against his recommendation, I used the Blue Power
and within three days saw great improvement. By the end of the first
week, all indications of inflammation were gone! I'm now using the
formula once a week and seeing nothing on the cotton ball after routine
cleaning. Prior to using the formula I was pulling out at least three
cotton balls of wax, dirt etc. Finally after approximately 15 months of
suffering, my dogs ears are in great shape.

Please refer to the site above, follow the directions and consider
trying the mixture.

Hi everyone,

Just wanted you all to know that it's in the works for
getting Cathi's Bacchus set up as a special friends
through BEHAF. I'm sure you can send either straight
to Cathi or if you want to go through BEHAF you can,
just make sure you make note on your check that it's
for Bacchus I do not have BMDCA membership book here
at work to give you Dino Candelaria mailing address
the BEHAF site (www.behaf.com) has her phone number,
her computer as Vilma Briggs has told us in intensive

I know Cathi is overwhelmed right now trying to learn
all she can about Osteosarcoma on top of dealing with
bereavement over her sudden loss of Ari, PLEASE
continue to keep her in your thoughts and prayers.

a little humor to share

2003-09-10 Thread O'Drobinak, Tom
Dear Dogs,

When I say to move, it means go someplace else, not switch positions
with each other so there are still two dogs in the way.

The dishes with the paw print are yours and contain your food. The
other dishes are mine and contain my food. Please note, placing a paw
print in the middle of my plate and food does not stake a claim for it
becoming your food
and dish, nor do I find that aesthetically pleasing in the slightest.

The stairway was not designed by Nascar and is not a racetrack. Beating
me
to the bottom is not the object. Tripping me doesn't help, because I
fall faster than you can run.

I cannot buy anything bigger than a king size bed. I am very sorry
about this. Do not think I will continue to sleep on the couch to
ensure your comfort. Look at videos of dogs sleeping, they can actually

curl up in a ball. It is not necessary to sleep perpendicular to each
other stretched out to the fullest extent possible. I also know that
sticking tails straight out
and having tongues hanging out the other end to maximize space used is
nothing but doggy sarcasm.

My compact discs are not miniature Frisbees.

For the last time, there is not a secret exit from the bathroom. If by
some
miracle I beat you there and manage to get the door shut, it is not
necessary to claw, whine, try to turn the knob, or get your paw under
the edge and try to pull the door open. I must exit through the same
door I entered. In addition, I have been using bathrooms for years,
canine attendance is not mandatory.

The proper order is kiss me, then go smell the other dogs butt. I
cannot stress this enough. It would be such a simple change for you.

Rules for non-pet owners who visit and like to complain about our pets.

1.. The dog lives here. You don't.
2.. If you don't want dog hair on your clothes, stay off the furniture.

3.. I like my dog a lot better than I like most people.

4.. To you, he is a dog. To me, he's an adopted son who is short,
hairy, walks on all fours and doesn't speak clearly.

5.. Dogs are better than kids. They eat less, don't ask for money all
the
time, are easier to train, usually come when called, never drive your
car,
don't hang out with drug-using friends, don't smoke or drink, don't
worry about buying the latest fashions, don't wear your clothes, don't
need a gazillion dollars for college and you have them spayed and
nuetered so no worries about unwanted pregnancies.

The same applies to cats, except they ignore you until you are asleep.

Berner-L at Prairienet Defunct by the end of September!

2003-09-10 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]

So have patience, and do join us!

I will be on vacation until September 25th, and it will be a few days for
me to get through all the email.

AVERT HOAX Notice!!

McAfee AVERT Labs would like to inform you of a new email HOAX.

We are advising users who receive the email to delete it and DO NOT pass it

Below is the actual text from the message that may be received via email.

I received this from a reliable family friend this morning. 10/28/01 BIG
TROUBLE DO NOT OPEN WTC Survivor It is a virus that will erase your
whole C drive. It will come to you in the form of an E-Mail from a
familiar person. I repeat a friend sent it to me, but called and warned me
before I opened it. He was not so lucky and now he can't even start his
computer! Forward this to everyone in your address book. I would rather
receive this 25 times than not not all.

If you receive an email called WTC Survivor do not open it. Delete it

Overwhelmed

2003-09-09 Thread bernerlover
I have used the word overwhelmed so many times this past week that it has
almost lost it's meaning. But I am once again, overwhelmed. First, by all
the wonderfully supportive prayers and support, then by the joy everyone
shared with me, then by all the financial support by phone and mail, then by
lovely notes of condolence, then by those who picture Ari as I do.

I sat here yesterday at the computer. And as a kind of therapy, I just read
all the incoming thoughts of Ari. It was so helpful to me, I want you all to
know. I have sent an e-mail, upon the passing of a beloved berner, and often
thought what are my words going to mean or what can a few words do? I
assure you that those individual words, when joined with hundreds of others,
create a tidal wave of love.

And something else I've noted. The people who write I don't know what to
say or words cannot express must have to look very deeply into their
hearts to continue. Because what they say next is so often the most moving
thing I've ever read.

Bacchus is not a good candidate for amputation. He has a bad left elbow and
had partially torn his right rear cruciate ligament a few years back. Not
bad enough for surgery, but I can already see it is taking a strain on him.
I talked about many, many options with the vet today, even limb sparing
surgery. I know what I have to do. And I welcome all help as I support him
with diet and love and pain med when we need it. I hope you all don't think
I am giving up on Bacchus. It's just that we all know where this leads
inevitably.

Cathi only you know what to do with Bacchus. I must admit, I'd be inclined
to do as you are doing. But one never knows until the decision is ours.

God bless you in this period of your life. We all are with you and feel your

Remember this too shall pass. You are going through [probably] one of the
toughest times in your life and through this remember you will end up on the
other side of this a better person and indeed something good will come of
all of this trauma.

What doesn't kill us makes us stronger. I know it's a tough thing to hang on

3rd Annual BRBMDC Picnic and Mountain Hike THIS Saturday 9-13

2003-09-09 Thread mzebley

The Third Annual Blue Ridge BMD Club's Picnic and Mountain
Hike will be THIS Saturday, September 13 (sorry for the late
notice), from ~ 11am until ???. Come as early or stay as late as
you like. Assuming we don't get rained on like in previous years,
we should be there until at least 3pm. Forecast is for partly cloudy
with only 10% chance of rain and a high of 75 - so should be
wonderful weather for us.
The picnic will be on the Parkway near Blowing Rock and
Boone, NC - at the Price Park Picnic area at mile marker 296.4.
It's a beautiful area. We plan to try to get the same spot we've
used in the past, which has a large open field (anyone want to
bring some carts?), several picnic tables, a stream with beach, and
is the starting point for a nice hiking trail. The stream separates us
from the rest of the picnic area - you'll have to cross a little wooden
bridge to get to the area. Since it's first come, we may not be able
to get that spot, but if not, there's several other areas that are
nearly as nice. We'll be heading up early Saturday morning to
stake our claim.
Non- club-members are welcome, as are the dogs (even non-
berners). Please bring your own lunch and drinks, and remember
water for the dogs, though there are restrooms where water can be
obtained. Per Parkway regulations, all dogs must be on a 6 foot
leash or under physical restraint at all times (though that doesn't
seem to be enforced on the trails), and pet owners are responsible
for cleaning up after their pets, so bring baggies.
For further information, contact me at [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Also, if you are thinking about coming and email me ahead of time,
I can give you a phone number where you can reach us at the
picnic grounds, in case you are having difficulties finding us. We
look forward to seeing everyone!!

If coming from the east, take I-40 to US-421 and go north.
Stay on 421 (heading west) until you reach the Blue Ridge
Parkway - a little over 70 miles from I-40. This entrance onto the
Parkway may be closed by construction - if so, stay on 421 until it
merges with 221, then follow that to the Parkway. In either case,
take the Parkway south until you get to the picnic area - it'll be on
the right hand side.
If coming from the west, take I-40 east to US-70 east. Follow
this to US-221 north. 221 first crosses the Parkway at Linville
Falls. You can get on the Parkway north there, or continue on 221
to join the Parkway near Grandfather Mountain. Take the Parkway
north to the picnic area, which will be on the left from this direction.
If coming from the south, take US-321 north (can be reached
from I-85 in Gastonia) through Hickory and up past Blowing Rock.
Just north of Blowing Rock, 321 crosses the Parkway. Get on the
Parkway and head south until you come to the picnic area on the
right.
If coming from the north, take I-77 to US-421, and follow the
directions from the east.

Here we go again...

Well Eddie has healed up really nicely and his face looks so handsome
with no draining holes.Ā  Then he somehow scratched the cornea in one eye
and scratched the other eye but not the cornea we have a lot of sand on
our property and I think that was the culprit.Ā  His eyes were really red.Ā
More

antibiotics and drops later and he's seems to be on the mend.

Hannah on the other hand is going back in Wednesday for more surgery...
same spot on her left back foot between the toes, same Mast Cell cancer.Ā
We're not sure if it's a reoccurrence or some cells left over from July's
surgery.Ā
We are doing this surgery and then see what happens.Ā  It's been a very
difficult
decision and right about now I feel like I'm hanging a death sentence over
Hannah's head, but we have decided not to do any radiation.Ā  The protocol
that has been described to us very thoroughly is not something we want to
subject a very happy bouncy Hannah through.Ā  Or we could take off the two
toes.Ā  However, she's getting stressed enough out over surgery and we just
cannot put her through that.Ā  We're trying to keep positive that this time the
surgery gets everything.Ā  Time will tell.

After all this, and losing 5 Berners over the past 20 years, and having our
hearts ripped out over what Cathi is going through, and other recent losses,
I don't think my heart can take much more.Ā  I'm not sure I can ever have
another Bernese.

Ari is gone. She didn't want to get up in bed with me last night, so I left
her in the crate with the door open. I got up at 2am and couldn't find her.
She was curled up on the rug in front of the front door. I called to her and
she didn't raise her head. And I touched her. And she was gone.

Ken got her in the truck for me and I took her into the emergency vets. They
said it was her heart. They are making arrangements for cremation for me and
will return her to me afterwards.

Everyone at the vets is devastated as I know you all we be. So am I.

Not getting berner-l Yahoo

2003-09-08 Thread Jean Cheesman
Good Morning here from Hereford, UK!

Wondering if the members missing haven't verified the email address they
have Subscribed with? This was part of the big Change on Yahoo a couple of
weeks ago when all members who had been subscribed to Yahoo when the old
OneList/egroups/Yahoo Clubs merged were automatically transferred to Yahoo
Groups.

The Owners/Moderators of your other Groups would have been notified (I was)
to warn their Members that they must make sure that all the email addresses
on there Yahoo Account are verified.

Without this you do not get full Group Features

How do I verify my email address?
In order to use an email address for Yahoo! Groups, the address must be
verified. The easiest way to set up your account is to use the Membership
Wizard.

http://groups.yahoo.com/memwiz

The wizard will show all of the email addresses you currently have available
for use in Yahoo! Groups. Any unverified addresses will be listed at the
bottom of the second page. Next to the address will be a Verify link. Click
on the link to generate a verification email that will be sent to you at
that address. Follow the instructions contained in the email to complete the
process.
If the email address you wish to use is not listed, click on the Add new
email address link.

Hope this helps.

Fundraiser prizes.....

2003-09-08 Thread Dr. William B. Neff
Congratulations to all of the winners from last night's drawing of the
Name the Costco Berner Contest and the Berner-Garde Fundraiser.I
have a business conference in St. Louis this week and will not return until
Sunday evening, so I know that with a short week at work here in
Pittsburgh, I won't have time to unpack all of the boxes of prizes in my
gameroom, organize the prizes according to people who won them, pack the
prizes up so they don't break in the mail and then go to the post office
and stand in line with about 65 boxes and padded envelopes!! As you can
imagine, I'm real popular there!!! Actually, I go to a very small post
office which doesn't have a lot of activity on an early Saturday morning
and my husband, Bill, helps me carry the full load of boxes and padded
envelopes into the post office. They are very nice there and don't give
me any hassle and the few people who do come into the post office go to the
only other window to transact their busines..

Thanks again to everyone who helped make the Berner-Garde Fundraiser a HUGE
SUCCESS!!!
...AND.
Save your money for the next fundraisers coming up very soon!!!

Rescue help needed for a 7yr. old male TDI BMD by the name of Echo. His owner goes
out of town 3-4x per yr and the petsitter situation is not working out. If anyone in
the Bethlehem, PA area or vicinity can take care of him while they are away, please
let me know. The dog needs a fenced in area and is great with other animals and
ofcourse people. The owner thinks he misses doing Therapy work and that would be a
plus if he could do that as well. The owner may be willing to give him up if the
right match came along. If you are interested or can help out in any way with the
babysitting (they will pay) I can be e-mailed directly at [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Ari....Inside the Front Door

2003-09-08 Thread bernerlover
Inside the front door is a good place. A place where Ari waited for me, even
if I just went out to check the mail. She sat peeking over the screen door
and listening for my footsteps. And wherever I went, and wherever she was
when I left, she would always be waiting for me there.

It was a place of excited dancing at the prospect of another adventure, even
if it was just a walk in the park or a ride in the car. And when the sun
came through in the afternoon, it was a good place for a nap.

When you picture Ari in your minds eye, see a silly girl. Sitting there with
head cocked, one ear flipped over, and her tongue hanging out of the side of
her mouth. Smiling.

I see Bacchus looking around quickly as if he's just seen something out of
the corner of his eye. And I know what he sees. The hint of a halo and the
wisp of a wing.

I believe Ari knew exactly what she was doing. She showed such courage to
make sure she was home. And I believe when Ari left her crate this morning,
she knew exactly where she was going. And she made it as far as inside the
front door. And the angels took her from there.

My sweet, sweet girl. I will miss your kisses, soft as velvet.

Cathi with Bacchus

in??!!

Hi Jennier,

Isn't it exciting to win things in the Fundraisers? Congratulations!!!

The funny thing is that it's even exciting when you don't win something,
because in our fundraisers, you know many of the people who did win and you
feel happy for them...ANDyou also have a warm, happy feeling because
you know that your contribution has helped our wonderful Berners!!!

I did want that Thomas the Tank Engine shelf, but I'll have to order it
myself from Ozark Railway :-)!
* Yes, that's an added benefit for the generous vendors who donate such
lovely items to our fundraisers. People try to win them, but if they
don't win, many times they do purchase items from them, which is nice, too.

Now about the berner pillow and berner etching -- how do I go about
getting myself one of those? Anyone have a web site for these items??
* If there is a website in the box with the donor's name, that usually
means that you can order the item if you didn't win it.

As far as those lovely etchings are concerned, they are a limited edition
with BARC (Berner Auction Recue Coalition) and can be ordered from Jane
Heggen [EMAIL PROTECTED]

And here's hoping there will be more Willem paintings for the next fund

* OH BOY.are you ever going to LOVE the Thanksgiving Fundraiser that
we are going to have!! It is going to be an exclusive Willem Wijnberg
Item Fundraiser to raise money to fight cancer in our Berners. He has
been working very hard to supply us with some paintings and prints, but I'm
not going to spoil the surprise you'll just have to wait until I launch
that Thanksgiving Fundraiser.

We have a Fundraiser for BEHAF (Berner Emergency Health Assistance Fund)
coming up real soon - it will start in early October and run until
mid-November. I don't have enough items for that fundraiser just yet, and
would happily accept berner items now. Just send me an e-mail and tell me
what you are donating, and send it to me, so I can photograph it and get it
on our website. BEHAF is in need of money so they can help Berners in
need of medical assistance. You can check out their website at:

In the next week, I will be doing a MINI-FUNDRAISER for LOC (Light One
Candle.) Did you know that our lobbying funds will run out next month?
We need to raise some quick money so we can continue our lobbying efforts
for our Berners. SoI will be announcing a short 2 week
Mini-Fundraiser for LOC. There will be just seven very nice items for
this fundraiser and from the time it's announced you will have to send in
your checks right away. NO dilly dallyingor procrastinatingor
thinking you'll do it later. There won't be time for that - you will have
to DO IT RIGHT AWAY

Of course, I have plans already in the works for fundraiser for 2004 -
we'll do one for BARC and of course we'll also do the 2004 Annual
Berner-Garde Fundraiser again. I already have a bunch of Berner items in
boxes in my gameroom (actually it's now knows as Fundraiser Central in my
house.)

Sokeep saving your change or keep not buying something each day and
putting that money away for our fundraisersor get a 2nd job to support
your Berner Fundraiser habitor whatever you do to be able to generously
support our Berners causes, because I am going to have lots to tempt you
over the next months!!!

THANK YOU to everyone who helps with the fundraisers and especially to
Karen Pickel who labors over our websites to make them very special.
Without all of you none of these fundraisers would amount to much!!!

RE: [Berner-l] Not getting posts

2003-09-08 Thread Pat Long Paul Dangel
Caroline,

Nope! You did nothing wrong! I've found out what the problem might be,
but I'm not positive quite yet. Apparently once you go over 200 members,
Yahoo puts your membership list in another category, and updates are no
longer instantaneous, but are usually hourly. If they are doing some
other work, the updates may take several days.

So, I'm going to try to stick with Yahoo for now. What that means is
that when you join, it may take awhile before you can set your mail
preference. In the meantime, you can go to the berner-l group and read
the emails there on the web. You can post to the List. But you won't
necessarily be able to receive email without a bit of a delay.

Once everyone is on the List and we're up and running, it won't be a
problem (she said optimistically), it's just the initial setup that will
be a growing pain for us all.

The other option is to use a different email list. Which is likely to
have some growing pains of its own.

I wish I could find my magic wand and convert everyone transparently,
but I've misplaced it somewhere. Thank you all for being patient, we
will get there!!!

Dear Mie,

I am so very sorry to hear of the passing of your Merly. How very sad.
I know the heartbreak of malignant histiocytosis and the absolute feeling
of helplessness you feel when you can't change the course of events.
I'm sending you healing hugs and hope that the pain that you are feeling in
your heart today will someday be replaced with the many happy memories of
the times you spend with Merly. Give Petra a hug from me, too. She is
surely missing Merly too.

Yes, you can still send me a check to support Berner-Garde and still be
part of the drawing for tomorrow night, BUT you have to send me an e-mail
telling me how much your check is for and how you want me to distribute
your tickets. We are not going to raise as much money as our all time
high of $7,484.25 - we are still far from it, but we do have a respectable
amount. We can always use more, though, so don't hesitate to join in on
the fun - you still have an excellent chance to win some nice prizes!!!

I am about overwhelmed (like everyone else) with spam, esp porn.
John thinks that largely comes from yahoo groups.

Sadly I get spam in on an email addy I have never even used, let alone
joined a Yahoo Group with!

A few months ago I was getting some 200-300 junk mails in per evening, I'm
now using MailWasher and am now down to about 50 a day!

I've heard that you should use different screen names on your group
accounts to eliminate some spam. I don't understand how that would
help and I don't understand how to do it.

I don't think that would help with spam, but you can use different email
addies with different groups (and different Profiles)

2003-09-07 Thread Dr. William B. Neff
This is your absolutely last day to be able to make a donation to
Berner-Garde and be entered into the drawing for the wonderful 99 Berner
items in our fundraiser. The drawing will be late this evening and I
would hate anyone to miss out on an opportunity to win some very nice
things. So.THERE IS STILL TIME to enter the contest - all you have to
do is send me a check and also to send me an e-mail with the amount you are
sending and the instructions for distributing your tickets into the
envelopes.See, that is so easy and you have a very good chance to win
some excellent items and help Berner-Garde and the BMDCA Health Committee
develop a DNA Repository and Tissue Bank that will benefit our Berners at
the same time. You can be part of the solution by just donating money to
the Berner-Garde Fundraiser - we need your help.

BMDCA Code of Conduct

2003-09-07 Thread Pat Long Paul Dangel
Just a reminder that September 10th is the deadline for getting comments
and feedback in to the committee that worked hard to develop a new code
to consider. I'd love to find out that just as many people wrote in with
their comments about the COC as people who wrote in about Bernd's new
book. The publisher had over 200 responses, and I'd love to hear that at
least that many BMDCA club members took the time to read and comment on
the proposed COC.

To those of you who have already given feedback, thank you! I have long
wanted to see a more meaningful code for the club, and it cannot be done
without the consensus and support of the membership. Each thoughtful
comment is helpful. If you support it, let them know! If you don't
support it, give them some specifics. They are doing this work for all
of us, and the very least we can do is to assist them in those efforts.
I've seen the complaints about the club not having a strong meaningful
code, and this is our chance to have some input.

To read the proposed code and for information about how to submit
comments, go to:
http://www.bmdca.org/coc/intro.pdf
or just go to www.bmdca.org under the section Announcements.

Re: One Door Closes and a Window Opens

2003-09-07 Thread Brandewein5261
Being a faithful and devoted Berner owner since 1994, I have to say that losing my
first Berner has been an experience that has been both heartwarming and heartwrenching
at the same time. Bernard of Puddingstone (Bernie to our family) came into our lives
on a cold, snowy day on the NYS Thruway. He was handed to me at the age of 49 days in
a blanket by JoAnne Gerow when because of an overturned truck we could not make it all
the way up to her kennel. He sat on my son Josh's lap, then 7 yrs. old and now turning
16, and instantly became an integral part of our family. He was our protecter(as well
as the entire neighborhood's!) and a loving and faithful family member for almost
9yrs. This past summer he came on vacation with us to Montauk, NY along with our 1yr.
old BMD, Buzz and Van our newly adopted Golden. I will be forever grateful for taking
him with us because it turned out to be his last week with our family for when we
arrived home he passed away with a smile on his face and dignity just a few days
later. He was my loyal and faithful guy right to the end. I walked out of our kitchen
to check my email and he passed when I left. He protected me to the end by not
breathing his last breath in front of me. Buzz and Van refused to leave his side.
Van, a 2 yr. old Golden who is a reject from the Seeing Eye in Morristown, NJ came
into our lives for a reason for sure. He was given up to me by a family that I worked
for this summer who could not give him the quality of life he deserved. He has made
life without Bernie so much more bearable. He truly came into our lives just at the
right time. Thanks you's go out to all that were there to support us during this
really hard time. For those of you that knew Glora Henes, Bernie was one of her last
puppies from Peter the Great and I dedicate this little email in her memory. I always
wanted to become more involved in the BMDCW and this past spring I took on the
position of rescue along with Margaret McMath. Thanks go out to Margaret for all of
her help and support in the Rescue arena. I couldn't have a better mentor!
Lastly, Congratulations and Best of Luck to Barbara and Bob on their adoption of
Sammy. Thank you for your gift as well! They are delicious! I am so happy that I was
able to assist you in finding your BMD!

Subject: baka: no blockages but still having hind end problems

i'm greatly relived to know baka's diarrhea problem was unrelated to the
hind end weakness and pain. baka's been blood tested (came back perfect
except showing some dehydration), xrayed (intestine walls stomach
looks 100% normal now), examined by hand multiple times (nothing gets a
negative reaction, she just grins wags), and ultrasounded (nothing out
of the ordinary).

last night baka ate several small bland meals (she was ravenous), peed
fine, no vomiting, no nausea, no dry heaves nor grass eating. baka even
pooped last night, the first half was a little soft full of grass, but
the second half looked perfectly normal formed. the digestion problem
should be cleared up completely by tomorrow night i think the vet is
very confident there is not a blockage.

unfortunately that leaves us without an explanation for baka's inability
to stand up the other day. baka is standing up on her own as of
yesterday and she'll walk from spot to spot when she's in the mood, but
she's still arching her back walking strangely with her hind legs.
baka's also still slow to rise and slow to lay down, as if she were
stiff or sore (like she used to before her hip surgery a couple years
ago). our vet didn't feel or see anything obviously wrong, so we're a
little confused. and we don't want to put any pain killer in her system
until we're certain the diarrhea is completely resolved (she lost 6 lbs!
in just those 4-5 days).

i'm thinking of taking baka to see the chiropractor vet who is 30
minutes away. my thinking is that maybe her hands are more sensitive
could feel something being off that our regular vet might miss? either
way, my vet is expecting my call monday to see how baka did over the
weekend decide what to do next. i'm trying not to worry, but this is
certainly confusing. i don't like seeing my baby hurt not know ho to
fix it (and baka *so* unhappy now that the weather's cooled off i
won't let her go to the dog park, every time we walk past the car she
whines at it).

thank you to everyone who's emailed their support advice.

Worried Mother Syndrome-Ari takes a ride

2003-09-07 Thread bernerlover
Everything is fine. But late this morning Ari didn't look right. Didn't want
to stand, when she did she was roach-backed, stiff legged, tail tucked. Temp
was elevated. I called the emergency vets and they said bring her in just to
make sure.

Of course, when we got there she was wagging her tail saying hello..they
are so wonderful there. They looked her over, but said they expected a bit
of WMS [worried mother syndrome].

Then they told me how tickled they are by the people calling for Ari.
Evidently now, after taking a call, the receptionist goes into the back and
announces I just got a call from [fill in location]. And they are all
just blown away. She told me she got tears in her eyes yesterday.

And this is without including the wonderful people who are sending help by
mail. Wait till they see that.

Thanks again a million times over for everyones prayers, support,
suggestions, and help with her bills. You are not just affecting me and the
babies.but an entire emergency clinic is overwhelmed by the generosity
of the berner community.

re: baka: no blockages but still having hind end problems

2003-09-07 Thread Sharon Montville
Hi Laura and Baka,

I finally realized I had a similar (but not exactly
the same) episode with my dog Tanzi in June. We had
showed on Saturday and she was not quite as perky as
usual, and had mild diarrhea. Got home, she ate as
usual and spent most of the evening outside. At
bedtime I called and she did not come. So I had to go
out and find her (very large fenced backyard). She
was unable to get up (she is 2 1/2). I helped her and
she was very lame in her hind end (her GDC's are
excllent, with normal elbows). So I called the
emergency clinic and took her in. I had to basically
carry her into the clinic. They gave her morphine for
pain and told me it might make her vomit. Sure
enough, it did - and up came a large pair of panties
(not mine) rolled into a nice compact cylinder
garnished with hair and grass, so it looked like a
dead rat. Since I had paid about $3500 for her dam's
treatment and surgery the prior year, related to
swallowing an entire pair of pantyhose (not mine,
again) in one piece, we had a few good yucks over all
the money I had saved, and I took Tanzi home.

She was a dead weight and I had to set her down in
order to open the front door. I could carry her if
she was elevated, but I could not really pick her up
from the ground. So I somehow got her just inside the
front door (up one step) and set up an x-pen around
her. Checked her at 7 a.m. and she had not moved and
was not much better. She ended up going back to the
emergency clinic in the afternoon - but now she was
lame in the front! X-rays revealed inflammation of
the joints. So they put her on Rimadyl and sent me
home. By that night, she was completely normal again.

And has been normal ever since.

However, I just heard about a friend's dog who had to
be spayed due to pyometra that had also resulted in
peritonitis. From what I understand, she had lameness
and swollen joints as well.

I had been worried Tanzi might have been bloating and
had heard that hind end lameness can be related to
abdominal distress. So maybe the panties had caused
that?? But what about that front-end lameness? It was
almost like the inflammation was moving from joint to
joint??? Whatever it was, it was brief in duration
but it really scared me. Within 24 hours, she was
fine. But at times during those 24 hours, I was
worried that she might die. To see a normally
incredibly sound and very active young dog, unable to
walk, is scary.

I hope all is well with Baka, but if you ever get more
explanation I would love to hear what it was. We
don't have any answers on Tanzi. I was thinking maybe
the hind-end was due to the panties, and the front-end
was just caused by straining to make up for the rear
but I am not at all convinced. I am almost wondering
if she had some weird virus?
