The first place to check is the recycle bin, if it's there, highlight the
icon, open the context menu, & choose restore. If it's not, read the
various notes on how to get desktop icons back from the notes below.

understanding is correct in its own dialog that is speak drop box's you can
set that to off.
Its tray icon should get you to its preferences dialog.
