In the source there is a comment relating to location:

Hi Hraban, I can help with one - aligntitle means an unnumbered section will align in the table of contents under the number rather than the title. So for example if you have a TOC combining \section and \subject entries, they would look like this: 1 ... A section A subject rather than 1 ... A section .. After unpacking, running the install scripts results in: ld-elf.so.1: /home/rmason/Software/Context/bin/mtxrun: Undefined symbol "__libc_start1@FBSD_1.7" I assume this is because mtxrun is compiled for FreeBSD 14.0. Thus, I need (I think) to compile it for 13.2. Are there instructions somewhere on how to do this? Hi Ralf I keep TeX Live on my Mac. It’s a great fall-back when I have new version surprises with ConTeXt. tug.org/mactex/ TeX Live has a friendly installer. Updates are easy with TeX Live Utility. TeX Live has a version of ConTeXt from last May, and it’s quite a good version, in my opinion. (ConTeXt ver: 2023.05.05 18:36 LMTX fmt: 2023.12.18) If you need any LaTeX stuff for some reason, it’s all there in TeX Live. [NTG-context] New upload doesn't work on macOS 10.13.6
Hi list, after having tried to update with the new upload, ConTEXt doesn't run anymore. According to the output the new version requires a more recent system. I still use macOS 10.13.6 (High Sierra). [NTG-context] LMTX: Command handling, Interface between TeX and Lua
Hi,
I'd like to understand more of the inner workings of LMTX.
When I understand it right, most of the code is now processed in Lua but
I was not able to find it.
For example, I tried to find out how setupitemgroup is handled (just as
an example of a more complex command). The wiki has a (kind of)
autogenerated description:

I found the data for this (at least this is my guess) here:

Are these xml files created by hand or somehow generated? Now, when I
use `\setupitemgroup[itemize:1][symbol=3,itemalign=middle]`: How are the
arguments handled and is this a generic process or specific to each
command?
Is there a simple way to define a new command/environment and handle
the keyword arguments in Lua? For example defining a frontend command
like this:

which I can handle in some lua code like this:

A while back Wolfgang presented a nice solution for alternating

But therein lies the problem: ConTeXt shows the rendering by default, and we need to turn it off. Since most non-Latin typography targets Uniscribe applications which allows for toggling, the font developers (commercial or free) don't have to concern themselves with this issue. if context shows it then it is not a feature but hard coded shapes which is weird; how does one know what to 'remove' or not? And in what stage? If they are zero width it is simple to ignore them in the backend, if they have dimensions (w/h/d) then they contributed and wiping is tricky The metrics should be dimensionless and most Arabic fonts do that, but Lotus Linotype gives them width (one wonders why). Perhaps the Lotus designers thought that giving them width makes them easier to edit, which is indeed the case. And perhaps they were satisfied that Word/InDesign would be able, as needed, to toggle the metrics on and off as well as the shape. That WYSIWYG-DTP curse again.. \setcharacterstripping[1] gives the right results with Lotus (at least so far) -- see attached. Was pleasantly surprised that the spurious width was also suppressed. \setcharacterstripping[0] toggles back -- another pleasant result -) Since Word rules the world, most font designers target it. Since Word provides for toggling the symbols -- needed for editing purposes -- there was no need for Arabic-script font designers to worry about the symbols showing up where they are not wanted. (I suppose that InDesign behaves the same way.) I don't know ... irr these dtp programs are more like "if you want this feature applied select a range of characters and apply it" That's what was meant when I spoke of the continued effects of the WYSIWYG curse: It saved font designers from having to think much about this issue. In some way it's also flaws in the open type approach. Basically that happens when application stuff becomes a standard and one forgets that it was (is) application driven. (And you haven't seen variable fonts and color fonts yet ... no pretty standards either.) I'm in the process of switching from Multiple Masters sources to variable, so will surely encounter it soon. Unfortunately there is indeed a frustrating gray area in this arena between knowing where the standards end and where the diktats of corporations (or even free-software consortiums like HB) begin, as we've discussed in the past. With variable fonts, one has to add some degree of arbitrariness.. Not really -) This brings us to the point of consistency: For Arabic-script fonts, hard symbolic rendering of the Unicode control characters is the rule, not the exception. So not "an inconsistent mess" -- at least not as far as Arabic-script typography is concerned. [NTG-context] problems with comments
Hi,
I wanted to use PDF comments to leave questions to the author/editor in
the correction PDF. Unfortunately, the comment is always empty,
regardless if \comment{} or \startcomment.
Also, the comment always inserts space into the text, I’d like to avoid
that; the option "space=no" doesn’t help.
The "author" setting is shown, but as soon as I click on the comment, it
changes to my user name. (Might depend on the viewer, but I get the same
behavior from Adobe and Apple.) "title" and "subtitle" settings are
handled differently by viewers, that doesn’t matter.
"location=inmargin": the symbol is at the edge of the text, but not in
the margin.

Hi Jairo,
you need to expose _dynamic_ symbols in your luametatex binary. If you
are using Linux, just adding the following to the CMake invocation line
should work:
-DCMAKE_EXECUTABLE_ENABLE_EXPORTS=1
For example, I compiled with:
cmake -S . -B build -DCMAKE_BUILD_TYPE=Release
-DCMAKE_EXECUTABLE_ENABLE_EXPORTS=1
cmake --build build -j10
You can check the difference in dynamic symobls with:
readelf --dyn-syms build/luametatex
Note, that while this approach doesn't require any modification to
luametatex's source files, it does export _all_ symbols, which makes
binaries bigger, and symbol resolution slower. It also exports also
symbols that are not intended to be used by external modules, like
"tex_get_x_token".
Back when luametatex source code wasn't available, I created a demo
which showed how to build a "luametatex like application" (i.e.
executable with Lua statically linked in), with exported dynamic
symbols, working with CMake on both Unix and Windows. It might interest

To support Windows in the case of luametatex, "#define LUA_BUILD_AS_DLL"
would need to be added when compiling Lua.
The problem with any module is, that you want to compile against exactly
the same Lua headers as the ones in luametatex, and with similar flags.
That is why the demo hosts everything in one CMake setup, but since
Lua's API hopefully doesn't change in the 5.4 series, you are probably
fine even with separate compilation.
IIRC stripping (LMT_STRIP) applies only to static symbols ("symbols")
and not the dynamic ones ("dynamic symbols"), and thus should be
irrelevant.

I think it would be nice to support this "by default", but in that case,
the binary size would have to be addressed, and only the "supported"

but those ## will end up in the link URL. How can I properly escape a single #?

The duplication of hashes is kind of special. Consider this:

the internal representation of #1 is a reference to parameter 1 while
the ## becomes one # (cc parameter) in the second exmaple followed by a
character 1 (cc other)
then, when tex serializes e.g. in tracing it duplicates the hash (with
cc parameter) so that the user is not confused (an alternative could
have been to indicate a parameter reference differently but changing
that now is no real option - what symbol to use anyway?)
with lua(meta)tex opening up matters this duplication becomes a bit
annoying so i decided to see if it could be avoided in some cases
first i decided to provide an escape, possible because we already have
such mechanism using # (not advertised because it is still experimental)
then i decided to just not duplicate unless we trace
in the lowlevel macro manual there is a section added that goes in more
detail
to come back to the escaping: here is a list:
#I loop iteraor
#P parent loop iterator
#G grandparent loop iterator
#H hash
#S space (ascii 32)
#T tab \t
#L newline \n
#R return \r
#X backslash
considering
#N nbsp
and some more. Keep in mind that #1-#9 #A-#E are in use as parameter
references
but in the case of your url's escaping should not be needed (hopefully)

to loose compatibility (hashes get interpreted in the macro preamble,
macro body, running text, serialization etc)

I suspect that LMTX is a bit more strict about parsing. You have
omitted the required \par for each \head.
You're correct, \head is the cause of the error and it's better to
replace it with
\starthead {...}
...
\stophead
but there are more things which can be changed to use modern syntax (in
many cases part of ConTeXt since nearly a decade).
A few examples:
- \startexercici[]{} -->
\startexercici[reference=...,title=...]
- \placetable[][]{}{...} -->
\startplacetable[reference=...,location=...,title=...] ... \stopplacetable

Ultimately I just want to be able to type the Unicode symbols for 02BE and 02BF

So even if we use symbols, would like to feed these setups to the CLD template
you provided some days ago and feed the final result to \definefontfeature.

well, you wented symbols so ... why lua then (btw, no need for squeezine
as there are virtual commands for scaling; not for rotating; an
alternative is to define some chars in metapost (see
meta-imp-gamesymbols) which gives you plenty freedom

[NTG-context] Scaling characters without font switching in CLD
Dear gang,
I. In Context, as is well known, scaling a character is not independent of
switching the font:

\tfx causes a switch to computer modern.
Of course, with the right typescripts and \setupbodyfont, one can maintain
stylistic consistency when switching fonts.
But what if we want to scale independently of font switching?
II. One approach might be to use symbols:

In this example, \tfa does scale the symbol Tee. But \tfx does not scale the
symbol!
Why does \tfa (or higher such as \tfb etc.) work, but not \tfx (or lower)?
III. The best approach would be to do it in CLD (Context Lua Code). That is
mostly beyond my skill to write from scratch without a template, but there are
some experiments in the system file font-imp-effects.lua. There we will find,
e.g.,

IV. Objective:
I need to be able to define a couple of characters in CLD -- glottal stops --,
and add commands to scale and/or rotate a character without triggering a font
switch. Again, writing this from scratch is beyond my current skill set -
although I've recently started to study CLD. Something like this -- some of the
semantics is almost certainly wrong and/or clumsy -)

I've deleted a group-closing symbol because it seems to be spurious, as in

[NTG-context] Custom TOC with makeup and setups
Hello,
I am trying to create a presentation where at the start of each section in
my presentation, a custom TOC page is shown. When I am at a particular
section, the TOC will grey out all other sections (not implemented in my
MWE). I have tried different ways but I find using makeups for the TOC page
works ok (following
https://wiki.contextgarden.net/Command/setuplistalternative and Aditya's
presentation slides on their blog). My challenge is that when a makeup page
is inserted, it leaves a page with the section name blank before it. How do
I fix it? Any other way to achieve this is also welcome. My MWE:

I am still interested in knowing if there is a good way to do nuclear reactions
using \chemical. But I found something that works for my current needs:

First of all, \OPENTYPE\ math fonts have (design) script and scriptscript sizes built in, so for that we have one family. Second, only full bold (heavy) makes sense as companion for regular math which is something that in practice we can support otherwise. I'm trying to replace the math radical symbol (with all its variants) in
one font with another one. Some fonts have too few radical symbols of
different sizes, which results in enormous spacing in radicals.
However, there is a bug in the new font replacement mechanism. Here is MWE:

It works in MKIV but it gives the following error in the latest LMTX:
...mkxl/math-vfu.lmt:675: attempt to get length of a nil value (global 'hp')
It is caused by the following loop in math-vfu.lmt:
local pv = olddata.parts
if pv then
pv = fastcopy(pv)
newdata.parts = pv
for i=1,#hp do
local pvi = pv[i]
...
One can see that #hp should be #pv. After this correction, the error
disappears and we get different sizes of radicals from the new font.
However, now the extended version of the radical does not work. Actually,
this loop is devoted to copying the parts of the extended symbol, and it
does not work as expected. Obviously, there is something deeper than the
correction of the typo. The same behaviour is for other extensible symbols
(e.g. parentheses).
I hope this issue can be resolved. A more deeper understanding is required
here.
