It looks like a very sympathetic installation to my eyes. First of
all, the speaker enclosures are so well blended into their
surroundings that they weren't easy to find. Secondly, they're not
bracketed to the walls but suspended by wires that are almost
invisible but revealed by their shadows. A speaker wire can be seen
above each enclosure but there are three shadows, so two of those must
be suspension wires. Those wires go to a ledge where the mounting
points seem to be on the topside, out of sight from the floor.

It is distinguished today mostly as the home of Ortho Pharmaceuticals,

were eight bagpipe and drum bands, not to mention the three high

The trouble with getting an ISBN for your self-published photo book
(or any other kind of book) is that you have to either buy a lot of 10

Anyway, I have a couple of projects in the works so I thought I'd bite

like to have an ISBN I'll set you up for my cost ($25.00). Just email

I really think Pentax should just man up and put a damned near forever

At the very least, it shouldn't be a profit center for them.

South Branch and the Raritan Power Canal merge to form the Old Raritan
River.

It is distinguished today mostly as the home of Ortho Pharmaceuticals,
one of the divisions of Johnson and Johnson. It's main claim to fame,
however, still is as the home town of John Basilone, Marine hero of
World War II. This weekend was the annual Basilone weekend in
Raritan, with races on Saturday,aI concert by the Quantico Marine
Corps Band at the community college and fireworks on Saturday night,
and a big parade on Sunday. To give you an idea of the parade, there
were eight bagpipe and drum bands, not to mention the three high
school bands, two middle school band, the Qantico Band, several fife
and drum corps, and numerous military and veteran units (as well as a
large Rolling Thunder contingent). John Seda, who played Sgt Basilone
in The Pacific, was one of many honored guests riding in convertibles.
The parade lasted two hours before the long line of fire and rescue
truck streamed down Somerset Street.

At the very least, it shouldn't be a profit center for them.

I don't think they make a profit from repairs. I thought Pentax had
out-sourced repair work?

So they get to sell lots of parts and fixing it is a profit center for the
repair people, whomever they are.
The point I was trying to make, which seems to have been lost on you, is
that Pentax should be fixing dead AF motors in these lenses without charge
because it is painfully obvious that there is a fundamental problem with
them.
If this is done by Pentax or an outsourced repair company is of absolutely
no importance, the point is that Pentax should be picking up the tab.

The copyright symbol in the center floor hides the camera and mirrored
parabolic tripod mounted device that allows this image to be made in
two exposures, stitched at camera level.

However, that's not the way it was done, if a bit of research is
correct. According to the Spinatour website thousands of photos were
taken over a period of three freezing nights and stitched together
after color and light balancing.

See the article at: http://spinatour.com/?p=35

Apparently, to enable zooming, they had to match hi-res images in
several stages to the overall stitched image. Also apparently the
camera(s) were located beneath the covering copyright symbol. Those
taking the picture were Vatican interns from Villanova.

Here is an outdoor image taken with the system, and it includes the
camera and tripod: http://www.spinatour.com/clemsonamrl/tour.html

Took me quite some time to find the speakers, which are painted to
blend. But I did find many places where the restoration left
untouched, plus hooks driven into the walls, etc. Nice and rare as it
is, the chapel is still a working place of worship to the church.

One of the articles I read today mentioned that the chapel art was
degrading at a pace that makes those in charge feel that it must be
closed to the public soon.

2010-10-01 Thread John Celio
I noticed something recently: there is not *nearly* as much discussion
of new Pentax cameras as there was just a few years ago here. I
remember threads going for weeks when new products were announced, but
that seems to have been reduced to days or even hours sometimes. It got
me wondering:

Are we generally happy enough with current cameras that new models
aren't worth getting excited about? Has the dSLR market reached a point
where new models are pretty much more of the same, with few real
innovations appearing with each new model, and thus don't warrant much
discussion?

Or are we all just holding our tongues until Pentax comes out with with
either a 35mm-sensor'd or mirrorless body? These two camera categories
seem to elicit the greatest response these days, even though we're
invariably talking about other brands and wishing out loud.

Just some things I've been wondering about.

I think the lower level of conversation is due mainly to the more frequent
releases. A new Pentax camera used to come once every decade or so -- well a
bit more often than that but not by much. Now they come every 18 months or so.
Those who are waiting for a 24 x 36 sensor to converse, will be mum for some
time to come. I expect there will be more D-5 conversation once some of us get
our hands on it.

My Pentax Gear Sale October 1 update:

pics: http://picasaweb.google.com/texdance
http://dallas.craigslist.org/ndf/pho/1984409828.html

PZ1p body with data back. Used but not abused - I had
three of them back in the day so no one got excessive
wear.. $289 Will throw in the wired remote, and the
nice comfortable original Pentax neck strap plus a body
cap and original manual.

Combo Set for Film: $395 which includes the PZ1p set
above with remote, strap, and manual, plus an AF500FTZ
auto-zoom and bounce flash which is the correct
top-line flash for the PZ1p, plus the correct Pentax
off-camera flash shoe and cord for the AF500FTZ.

Pentax-FA SMC 50mm F2.8 AF macro $325. This is the good
solid FA version with clamp feature and recessed
front element requiring no hood. Like New with used
box.

M 85/2, worn paint on blades and sluggish, but works
fine on istD. $225

SMCP-M 200/2.5 $350 Some paint wear, excellent optics.
I'm taking a big lo$$ on this. Don't miss this if you
have the Pentax 1.7x Adapter, they make a compact
510mm/f5 semi-AF combo with a DSLR.

SMCP-F* 300/4.5, with tripod mount, perfect glass, $850
That's right, this is the great classic F* with big
foot.

Tokina AT-x 300/2.8 SD, tripod mount, reversing hood.
$850. Like new with original hard soft cases and
large front filter. This one is truly like new. Add a
Pentax 1.7x adapter (not included) to make the finest
510/f5 semi-AF lens in town. With the APS-C sensor
multiplier, that's over 750mm with a nice close focus
of 8 feet.

Vivitar Series One 90-180/4.5 Flat Field Macro, with
built in tripod mount, no hood but it will take one.
Adapted to fit KAF-mount without interference
(originally Viv had too much metal protecting the
aperture lever, and it struck the double pins
introduced with PZ1P). Great MF zoom, focuses to 1/2
lifesize at 180mm. This is the perfect MF lens to take
to the zoo on a monopod...$200

Flashes: Sunpak GX8R Ring Flash Kit $79,
AF240T $49
AF500FTZ $169
a bounce Viv 2800 $19
choice of a couple of other cheap bounce flashes -- $12
each.

Large zoom head SunPak potato masher flash with camera
mount, x-sync cord, C-cell battery pack, and correct
cord for Quantum 1 battery pack. Will include defunct
Quantum (can be rebuilt). $145

Well, to the extent that they reduce a business cost, but what I mean is
Pentax doesn't make X number of Dollars, Euro, Yen ... profit off of

It's just a bad business practice to manufacture shoddy goods, and then

If Pentax does that, they won't be in business long. They've got their

Re: It ain't like it used to be.

2010-10-01 Thread Larry Colen
John, this touches on something that I've been thinking, and perhaps even
commented about.

On Oct 1, 2010, at 3:00 PM, John Celio wrote:

I noticed something recently: there is not *nearly* as much discussion

remember threads going for weeks when new products were announced, but

 me wondering:

Are we generally happy enough with current cameras that new models
aren't worth getting excited about? Has the dSLR market reached a point
where new models are pretty much more of the same, with few real
innovations appearing with each new model, and thus don't warrant much
 discussion?

Part of it is that for the most part, the changes are evolutionary.
Occasionally there will be a surprise, such as the K-x, where it won't seem
like much at first, but as it's used it gains a lot of respect.

Or are we all just holding our tongues until Pentax comes out with with
either a 35mm-sensor'd or mirrorless body? These two camera categories
seem to elicit the greatest response these days, even though we're
invariably talking about other brands and wishing out loud.

There are several things going on. First of all is the aforementioned
evolution versus revolution.

Another, is something that within the scope of its ability, I find that I can
get as good of photos with any of the cameras that I use. Better equipment
doesn't allow me to take better pictures, it just lets me take as good of
pictures in different conditions. Almost all of the discussions of camera
bodies seem to devolve into people stating whether a camera will, or won't do
something that their current gear won't do.

Would I get better pictures with a 645D than, for example, the shot with my
K100 that was displayed in Chicago? Probably not. I could likely get photos
that are clearer and sharper when printed up at the size of a garage door, but
since I've never done anything bigger than 12x18, the differences in clarity
may not be noticeable in the vast majority of pictures that I take.

I do a lot of photography pushing the low light performance envelope of my
gear. For me, the K5 would probably make a big difference in the number of
shots that I can get, and in how low of light I can get shots of people
dancing. The greater dynamic range would make a big difference in my band
photography as well. Better autofocus and automatic metering could mean that
those functions would actually be useful for me, enabling me to take pictures
faster under dynamic conditions, and miss fewer shots.

When I got my K20, I was very, very happy with its low light performance
compared with my K100. I was able to get shots in much more challenging
conditions. When I got the little stormtrooper, I was so impressed with it, I
pretty much stopped using the K20 in low light conditions. Last night I went to
see some friends play at a local club. I had my gear, but with a backlog of
about 2,000 unsorted/unprocessed photos (It's been a busy month) I wasn't
planning on doing much shooting. When I walked in, it was band break and when
the drummer saw me he said Do you have your rig? We need you to come up on
stage and get some shots with the band facing into the colored lights. I
mounted different lenses on the K20 and the K-x. When I was processing the
shots, I was blown away by how rough the high ISO K20 shots are compared to the
K-x shots.

So, yes, the steady improvement in performance is important to some of us, but
different features to different people, for different reasons. Being able to
use my slower lenses like the 16-50 in a wider range of conditions is exciting
to me, but probably not worth a lot of discussion on the list. Especially when
there are important cormorant puns to make.

Just some things I've been wondering about.

Re: It ain't like it used to be.

2010-10-01 Thread John Sessoms

From: John Celio

I don't know.

IIRC, I got back into 35mm with an A3000 sometime in the mid-80s. I went
from that to a Super Program in just a few months.

Added a K1000 probably around a year later, and an LX maybe a year after
that.

Resisted auto-focus until I bought a PZ-1P in 2003, *ist-D in 2004, K10D
in 2006. I was going to skip the K20D, figuring to sit it out until
something better than the K-7 came along, but I got a deal on a used
K20D in 2010 that was just too good to pass up.

Now, I don't expect to buy another body until I get to the point where I
need more than the K20D can deliver, and right now that day ain't
anywhere on the horizon.

Unless/until Pentax does bring out a full-frame DSLR I can afford or I
get to the point where I think I can afford a 645D.

(where afford == I think I can make money with it).

Or maybe at some point a used K-5 will show up at a price point I just
can't refuse ...

But for now the K-7 K-5 (K-x, K-r ... K-whatever) don't offer enough
extra bang for the buck to prompt me to fit an upgrade into my budget.

I am still looking around for some good fast auto-focus primes to fill
some gaps in my arsenal - but not looking real hard. And I'd really like
to find a good, fast, constant aperture zoom in the 28-105 range, but I
don't think anyone makes or ever made one in Pentax mount.

In the meantime I'll continue to rely on my 28-70f/2.8 for my workhorse.
And for now, I'm certainly not buying any more glass that won't cover a
24mmx36mm frame without vignetting.

On top of all that, I'm retired on a fixed income that's fixed a little
lower than I'm happy with. If I got to make a choice between eating and
gear acquisition, I think I have enough will-power to do the right thing.

Fine shot - great the way you've caught the ball in mid flight.

Thanks, Brian!

I just found out that the seats I was in for this game:

 1. Are worth $175-250 per game
 2. Can only be purchased as part of a full season ticket package (81 games)
 3. Must be purchased as a minimum two-year commitment.

In short: about $56k over two years for our company to have those seats. Darn,
that's a lot of money.
