My wife's car has been having an intermittent ABS light, with no real pattern. This has happened maybe 4 or 5 times over the last week, but never with me in the car - of course. Last night, the ABS light came on while she was driving home, but went off on the way. It usually resets when she turns the car off and back on. This morning, instead of an ABS light, the stereo went out. No radio, no tape, no sound at all. She turned the car off and back on, and all was back to normal. No other lights, controls, or functions seem to be affected. Thanks in advance for any advice! We Bostonians are proud of our f***ed up roads and it's a point of honor not to have road signs which make any sense. Why do you think we have had two tunnels connecting the city to the airport, the Sumner goes Southwest, the Callahan goes Northeast. Please forgive the cross posting, and sorry if this posts twice - I tried yesterday and have not seen it on the list yet. The time has come for me to part with my faithful fiver. Ive owned this car for about 4 years, as the 4th owner, and the 3rd owner is a friend. I have put about 30K miles on during those 4 years. This is a great running, great looking, honest, clean E28 fiver. Since I have had the car the following items have been done: New front calipers and pads, just done New cat back exhaust stock Bosal New fuel pressure regulator New rubber fuel lines in engine compartment New injector O-Rings New Boge gas shocks and struts New 215/60/15 Dunlop SP tires on E34 Style F type 15 bottlecap wheels (spare is still a TRX) Hella conversion headlights for lows and highs Rebuilt radiator, temperature is rock steady in this car New thermostat New electric antenna UUC short shift kit New upper control arms with Bavauto poly bushings New front swaybar links New power steering pump reservoir filter New door lock buffers New heater control valve New rear window chrome trim surround New guibo and center bearing Following new parts included with the car uninstalled R134 conversion kit (not including the compressor) Set of belts New valve cover gasket A couple of oil filters, fuel filter Work done by previous owner just before I purchased the car New clutch New subframe bushings This car has been well maintained, oil changed with Castrol 10-40 every 3K, and I have done almost all work by myself. I have the maintenance records since early on. What doesnt work? The A/C does not work. R12 has leaked somewhere and I have not done the conversion yet, although I bought the kit. Both blowers work fine, although the heater blower is starting to do the telltale E28 squeak on low speed. The Service Indicator lights do not work, because I took out the circuit board. I got tired of the lights. The power steering pump has a slow leak. I have to top up the reservoir about every 6-8 months, and I basically decided that I can live with it. The dash is in excellent condition with just two very small cracks, hard to see unless looking specifically for them. The exterior paint is in what I would call the 10 - 15 foot class. The car was painted below the rub strip line just before I bought it to clean up the lower body from the usual road grime and chips. The rest of the paint is not perfect, but when shes washed and waxed she really looks great and I get many compliments. Asking $3,000. Car is located in eastern MD. Yeah, I bought Ben's car for about $24k about 1.5 year ago. Around now I should say an S52 should be around very high teens to low 20's (of course depending on mileage, condition, etc). BTW, the other day I saw a '97 M3 coupe for $15k (private party). GGeeezzzz, I think I'll try to sell my jetta before it depreciates to nothing and get a used M3. Autotrader, ebay, Roundel, wholesalers, nowhere. This one is a 2000, 32k mile certified car, and they are asking waaaaaaay too much--$30k. They keep harping on the fact that it's certified. Of course, I say I don't care about certified & don't expect to pay extra. This is especially true since they told me that the first time this thing hits the track or goes to an autocross all warranty is null & void. Stopping the car and restarting a few minutes later and it runs fine. OBDII code says 'misfire' (not very useful).. CE light goes away after a few restarts. suggestions included checking coils, oil leaks into spark plug area, and a BMW reprogramming of the software (done on Z3's up to '99) The reprogramming is not applicable to my car (I have the newer twin-vanos engine) and there was nothing obvious as far as oil leaks into the plug area. anyways, it did it again and I took it to the dealer for them to check.. they spent a while checking it over and came up with some error codes from the throttle body (FC#170,171) (they explained that I have the throttle-by-wire system with a bunch of internal electronics which seem unhappy) So the diagnosis is I need a new throttle body (#13 54 1 433 414) for $260 plus a couple of hours labour. Bentley manual is no use (covers up to '98, older engine). The same part is also used in the Z3 2.3 and E46 323i and 328i (according to ETK).. is this something I can go with used? what exactly is in the thing? ETK picture looks pretty basic.. can I swap this out myself? any comments appreciated chris pawlowicz '99 Z3 2.8 - 50k miles '89 325i - 220k miles and original AFM and throttle still works fine.. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 10 Aug 2004 22:16:18 -0400 From: "Brett Anderson" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: "UUC Digest" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: FS E36 M3 6spd trans Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Brand new E36 Euro M3 6spd trans and clutch assembly. I do have two follow-up questions for you: You wrote: > A slow oxygen sensor will not set the check engine light, > and very few people monitor their fuel economy. Change > the pre cat oxygen sensors at or about 100K miles. The E46 has 4 O2 sensors...so only replace the pre-cat ones at 100K, and leave the post-cat ones alone unless/until they fail and set a CE? So the post-cat sensors are just there to check up on the pre-cat sensors? Second question: I've always jacked the rear of the car up using the rear subframe crossmember (passes directly under the diff). However, I've heard people recommend using a point further forward of the subframe crossmember (looks like a driveshaft collar of some sort). But I've also heard of people jacking from the rear diff itself. What's the correct way to jack the rear of an E46?
