They are usually 385mm IIRC. The factory has some 370mm options as well (with and without airbags). Every morning it seems a little harder to shift into 3rd and 5th, plus I have the loss of spring tension problem that many have experienced. Anyway, I have a potential opportunity to get the transmission from an E36 328is. Is this the same unit as mine? Or even an upgrade? Bottom line - can I use it and do I want to? On older cars the flap is moved by the throttle cable. On your drive-by-wire there's a built-in electrical actuator, maybe some on-board electronics, and a connector to hook it up to the car's wiring harness. > ETK picture looks pretty basic.. can I swap this out myself? Not to say that the throttle body isn't the culprit, just that their explanation doesn't sound correct. HTH, Evan still BMW-less, but looking --- original message --- [snip] anyways, it did it again and I took it to the dealer for them to check.. they spent a while checking it over and came up with some error codes from the throttle body (FC#170,171) (they explained that I have the throttle-by-wire system with a bunch of internal electronics which seem unhappy) So the diagnosis is I need a new throttle body (#13 54 1 433 414) for $260 plus a couple of hours labour. Bentley manual is no use (covers up to '98, older engine). The same part is also used in the Z3 2.3 and E46 323i and 328i (according to ETK).. is this something I can go with used? what exactly is in the thing? ETK picture looks pretty basic.. can I swap this out myself? _________________________________________________________________ MSN 8 with e-mail virus protection service: 2 months FREE* http://join.msn.com/?page=features/virus ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 11 Aug 2004 16:41:29 -0400 From: "Brett Anderson" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: "UUC Digest" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Re: Z3 throttle body Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Yes it did. The system worked fine last year other than a non-functioning aux. fan and a temp gauge that would sometimes creep up a bit in traffic on hot days. I came back to the car after a few weeks of storage and found a puddle of coolant under the front end. So I let it sit. I brought the car home almost a month ago. It had been in storage since December. After it was parked for 2 weeks in my garage, I kid you not, it decided to start leaking coolant again. I pulled the undertray and it appears as though the thermostat housing and water pump are relatively dry (lot's of oil and muck under there - it's not the cleanest engine compartment - I'm thinking maybe I need a valve cover gasket now), but I do see coolant along the bottom of the radiator housing and it looks to be "sweating" some drops of liquid from near the center of the engine-side of the radiator, almost looking like severe condensation. What's best to do? With 17 years and 170K, am I beyond the replacement window on a radiator anyway and I should replace it as a matter of course? Pull it and get it tested? Other tests I can do at home? I know anything is possible, but within the last 20K the water pump, thermostat, and hoses have been replaced. I'd hate to pull those tranny lines any more than needed. The car did run hotter than normal on the trip home, but I'm thinking that may have been due to a low coolant level. I did have someone follow me on the trip home and didn't see any smoke out the back and the oil dipstick looks fine, so I have no reason to believe a head gasket is an issue here. Any ideas greatly appreciated. As an aside I'm also working on a fuel leak which was diagnosed last night as being in the hard supply line a few inches forward of the rubber hose from the filter and an exhaust replacement that will have to include a new bracket at the spare tire housing as the original hook is gone and I had to do a bailing wire emergency fix around the bumper strut to keep the rear of the muffler from dragging. Hence that late launch this season, but she's still hoping for some open air time before winter and I hope to deliver!
