Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

Hey all,

About to change the control arm bushings, and I was
wondering what would contribute to the best handling.

I am definitely going to be going with solid bushings;
don't want to go back to the original split style, but
my decision lies in the offset or centered bushings.

I already have the 96+ M3 upper strut mounts on my
Bilstein and H&R combo, on the proper sides, i.e. NOT
swapped for camber. Currently, the front end feels
pretty light and unstable; could this be more from the
upper strut mounts or the super worn CA bushings?

Knowing that current setup, which is recommended, the
offset or centered bushings? My worry lies in too
much caster as a result of the combination of both the
M3 upper strut mounts and offset CA bushings, but I
don't know if it would really be an issue. I am also
wary of excessive amounts of rubbing on full lock
turns, which I obviously want to avoid as well.

All input welcome.

Brian

My '99 M3 has had the ASC and ABS lights come on and go off for about a
week now. I think the last time this happened it was the ABS pump. This is
all after checking wheels sensors, cleaning gunk, etc. Car has 51K miles,
no track or spirited driving........yeah, I know that's probably the reason
why they're on it's begging to be driven ;-). Seriously any BTDT's out
there lately?

Hi all,
Given the freefall state of E36 M3 values, it looks like I'll be keeping
my 97 M3 4dr for a while. I am pretty familiar with the regular
suspension and cooling system related replacements that are a good idea
around 100k (my car has 110k). I expect to do the shocks and front and
rear control arm bushings and have already done the radiator and
auxiliary fan. Are there any engine related issues I should address
preventively? Timimg chain tensioners? Vanos stuff? Car is mostly a
commuter, with a very rare autocross. Any help is appreciated.

Thanks,

Not unless you're getting any noises from those areas.

You do replace your fuel filter regularly, right? If not, I believe some
manuals call for it to be replaced at 100,000 mile intervals.

Check your power steering hoses, they have a tendency to leak and need
replacing after a while. When you do, might as well replace the P/S
reservoir (~$40). The filter for the system is in the reservoir. And of
corse put in new fluid.

Additionally, in my case, I've kept an eye on my oil consumption. I'm due
for a valve job (~1 qt. of oil every 700-800 miles). But then, my motor's
been one of the one's that has always consumed some oil.

Hope that helps,

I'm getting a solid ABS light as soon as I start the car on my 4/94 build date M3. It
was going on intermittently last week, but now it's on all the time. Any common
failure points on these things, or do I just start checking sensors?

Thanks in advance.

Howdy,

FYI, it appears there are a bunch of manuals for ABS systems at this site:

http://www.autodiagnos.com/multitester/oldmanuals.html

I found them via another message and some digging:

http://www.geocities.com/e36rulz/ABSRepairDescription.html

Does anyone know which ABS system a '93 325is would use? Is it the Teves
Mark IV? Or something else?

Thanks!

Yep. In my case it was the pedal travel sensor. Here's what I posted a
while back:

Sure, you could hunt around in the dark trying to fix it.

Or, you could have a local independent BMW mechanic read out the fault code
for you, then you'll know *exactly* what to fix. If you have a good
relationship with a mechanic, it should be very inexpensive to have them
read out the code (two of my local mechanic's will read codes for free; YMMV).

My 2 cents,

I think I saw that guy on 400 this week.....I thought it was the new Accord
as well. It didn't dawn on me until later that it was the 6.

That's still better than the 5. My sister thought it was the new Saturn
when she first saw it.

I went & looked at an '00 Mcoupe at united last week & you should've seen
the horrified look on the sales person's face when I said that I thought
that the M coupes would be the lastest model BMWs I could buy because the
new 5, 6, 7 & up-coming 3 are so hideous.

Sad, BMW is quickly working towards being the marque brand on the
road.......Even the new GMAABs look better.

Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

I brought my 325 (build 10/92) to the local dealership
on Monday morning to have a new instrument cluster
programmed with the current mileage, and I just called
back after a day of them not contacting me about
anything. I was just informed by the head service
advisor that there is no other place in the car in
which the current mileage is stored. Is this true? I
was under the belief that there was a correspondence
check between the odometer and DME or wherever else
the mileage was stored, and that if the correspondence
was off by too much, a red dot would illuminate in the
cluster to indicate such. Am I dreaming or is my
dealer really being honest?

Thanks,
Brian

You're dreaming, sort of, and your dealer is being honest, but stupid.

Early E36 clusters can't be reprogrammed with mileage at the dealer level.
Late ones had a transferable coding plug which can be switched over (assuming
it's not the failure).

Your dealer is being stupid because there is another option. You can order a
new cluster from BMW, pre-programmed with the appropriate mileage. Tell your
dealer to see SI 62 02 97 and SI 62 02 95 for details.
