how about just pulling the cover on the bottom of the engine
& draining it like you normally would ?

it's probably held on my plastic pushpins or bolts or both.

I "normally wouldn't climb under the car for and oil change. I'm too lazy to pick up
the car or crawl under it. My last car did generally OK with the topside changes.
(motor got 220k including about 75 track days and about as many autoX days).

YMMV

The E46 has a large very stiff formed sheet metal piece taking the place
of the X-brace on the E36, it covers most of the bottom of the engine
from the transmission to the front of the subframe. It is held on by 10
large one time use bolts which are tightened to a torque angle after
first being torqued with a torque wrench. This piece is a structural
piece and is not intended to be removed frequently. At the front of the
car there is one of the standard plastic panels with the easy-off
fastners, but the oilpan is above the sheetmetal piece. They did
provide an access panel below the oil drain plug though so it is really
no different than any other car.

I think these are generally intended for restoration type projects where you're going
to drain all the fluids anyway (gas tank, engine, etc. are probably coming out) and be
working on it for a sustained period of time. I can see how it might be handy if
you're doing things like welding in a new floor pan rather than having to work
overhead on a lift but at $1400 it isn't exactly cheap. If your garage has low
clearance, for maybe $1K more you can get a 4-post lift with casters - just roll it
out into the driveway and work outside. Obviously a fair-weather option, but we're
not talking about a commercial application.

I saw this gizmo in the Eastwood catalog. It's a rack that allows you to
tilt the car on it's side 90 degrees. Of course you have to drain the
fluids. It was kind of silly - but interesting alternative to a lift for
those with low ceilings.

I forget how BMW's valvetronic works. don't think they're direct
injection tho, just don't have throttle bodies. google will probably
find you a link to how it works.

> Can the new M3 V8 be 4/5 of the M5 V10? Won't the angle be different
> between V10 (60 degrees) and V8 (90 degrees)?

the number of cylinders & the angle of the V have nothing to
with each other. put another way, making a V8 out of a V10
means only a shorter crank & block, everything else (could)
remain the same. there are reasons that a particular angle
would be better for whatever reason (smoother, packages
better in terms of width or height) but the angle need not
change when making a smaller engine off a larger one.

other examples would be the modular Ford V8/V10, Chevrolet
5.7 V8/4.3 V6, Ford/Aston Martin Duratec V6/V12,
VW VR6/VR5, VW W8/W12, etc. they all share common
bore spacing & other systems along with the V-angle.

Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

I just put 225/50-15 Toyo RA-1s on my E30 325. They fit without
rubbing anywhere. However, on the left side I have 1mm of clearance
between the side wall and my coil over adjuster, on the right side I
have 2mm of clearance. By lifting the front of the car 3-4 mm, I can
gain another 2mm of clearance.

How much is the top of the tire going to deflect under cornering
forces? Do I need to lift the front and gain the clearance?

Thanks,

Kurt Zimmerman

Anyone know how to get Hirshman parts for the automatic antenna's?
Specifically the little soft aluminum idler wheel at the curve of the take
up reel. I think Hirshman part 4.11 721-064-001.

I bought the entire antenna new on Ebay for my 79 Porsche 928 when I had it.
It was around $60 if I remember correctly. I am sure they are available in BMW
fitments too although I don't know the P/N. Google might help.
