It obviously depends on how he drives. He can probably expect to get
16k-20k miles on a set of rears, less if he drives really aggressively.
Fronts should be good for 25k or so.

Joe,

first BMW M3 for your friend? In that case, first set of tires, 2.35k
WAAHOO miles. Second set 20k miles.

A good friend with a shop is considering purchasing AutoLogic diagnostic
equipment. Much less pricey than Motec, but appears to have most capabilities.
Anyone (Brett?) familiar with AutoLogic. Thanks.

I have one.

Pricey, but efficient. 10 times faster than the factory equipment but
doesn't have as many functions.

At this time it covers E34, E36, E38, E39, E46, E53 and Mini. They are
working on the later stuff and have no plans for the earlier stuff.

Support is sufficient, there is also an owners forum on their web site that
is helpful. Updates are fast, via the internet.

The only complaint I have with it, is that it doesn't have a docking
station, so all the cables plug into the machine directly. No problem
really, except a little hassle when you want to print.

I leased mine and so far, it's paid each lease payment in convenience.

He can afford a new E46 M3, but he is worried about the cost of tires?

Anybody who gets more than 18k on a set of those tires isn't having enough
fun. Anybody who gets less than 12k is having way too much fun for the
street.

Not factory, but if you google "automobile interior wood trim" you'll get quite
a few hits on places that offer wood trim kits.

I like wood in my cars (no not that kind you pervs). Does the parts CD show
parts from German or Australian models?
There are some options for models in these areas that had wood interior
trim.

Brett,
Have you (or anyone) tried Royal Purple SynchroMax? I've heard good things
from some locals. Any comments?

Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

I am contemplating purchasing a E39 to replace my
beloved E30. I need something bigger. I am trying to
decide which model will give me the best reliability.
I also want to know, if any, known problems with
automatics. I spend most of my days in traffic so I
am sadly considering an automatic. I would really
like a 540i but I am worried about reliability more
than anything.

I'd like to hear suggestions, experiences, problems,
things to look out for, typical issues, etc. I am
planning on buying 1998 or newer. Insight from anyone
 that has owned a 525i, 528i, 530i, or 540i for some
time (more than a year) would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance for your replies,

And if you join, don't forget you have to introduce yourself to the
group. You'll enjoy that later when you have to step through several
boring messages a day that say "hi, I'm bob and I just bought a bla bla
bla drool drool.." And don't forget you must attach your sig to each
message saying who you are, where you're from, and what kind of car you
have. If you forget, even once, Don E. will be all over you like stink
on a monkey. That's several more messages a day you'll have to read
through.

It's not a bad group, but I left because it was too annoying. I learn
more here, and with Google.

Remember that the group has quite an archive in place that you can search/mine.
It'll be more efficient for the initial data dump than having to cycle through
a series of emails.

Conventional oil with lots of VI improvers tend to thin as the VI improvers

there was a local dyno day for some S2000s back in november...one guy had
some older oil in his car and it made 204hp...the next week, he dynoed it
again, but with fresh oil and it got him 203.3hp...

so i dont think 6k mile oil will make any difference on the dyno...if it
were me, i'd run it as is and change oil with the usual interval...
