On a whim I measured the ignition coil resistances. The primary is difficult to measure (my analog meter doesn't do so good at sub 1 ohm values) but the secondary came it at 4500 ohms. Bentley claims 5000 ohms. If doesn't sound likely, but how about that ignition coil? Only looked at it because last year about this time (read that "cold") my coworkers Jetta lost its coil with similar symptoms. I figured what that heck, I'm borred, so I measured it, but I can't see how a fault there would let the car start but not run. Watching the behavior of the engine when it starts, I get the initial surge at start, it settles to about 1k and then stumbles and dies. Total run time is about 3 seconds. If I help it, I can hold it above 2k for about 3 seconds and it just stumbles and dies from there. Oil cap on or off makes no major difference. Temperature sensor and (I presume) coolant switch disconnected or not makes no difference. Unplugging the crank sensor gave me a no start condition (as it should have. I was aiming for the #6 pickup and missed). I suppose I should start looking for my pressure gauge and fittings for the fuel system. -- Joe -- Joseph M. I pulled the AFM and condensation had frozen the flap in place. I have it inside and am going to give it a good clean up and drying out. I guess too many short trips are bad when it doesn't get above freezing. -- Joe -- Joseph M. Krzeszewski Network Operations [EMAIL PROTECTED] Jack of All Trades, Master of None... Seems like each time it is serviced something else goes wrong. The evening I picked up the car after an oil change, in which the said they replaced some micro-filters the temp/heater control will not come on until after I have driven the car for about ten minutes. This is very strange since I have never had this problem since I bought the car in 1998. Has anyone had the heater control fail like this and if so what was the resolution? -Mark P. 97-328is 89-325is 84-318i ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 22 Jan 2005 18:45:47 -0800 (PST) From: Brian Ruiz <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: UUC Digest <[email protected]> Subject: Re: <e36> Temp\heater control intermitten failure -- help Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> They replaced the cabin blower microfilter. After a couple of thousand miles (30K or so, IIRC), it gets all gunked up with mildew and dust and can result in a musty smell, as well as an inefficient HVAC system. In order to access the microfilter, the glovebox must be removed, and all the heater controls are accessible in that same area. They may have left something disconnected or some such thing, or accidentally done something while they were in there. Might want to take it back to them and have tell them the problem, since it is a little more than coincidental that it stopped working right after they were working in that part of the car. Something that I always wondered: back in the days before I was a BMW owner (pre-enlightenment ;-), I used to own several Hondas and Acuras (this was back in the 80's and early 90's). I never experienced a problem with the wheels seizing on the hub with those cars, ever. Were those alloy wheels or hubs made from a different material than that used by BMW? I can connect it to my cable in one of two ways: (1) Connect the computer directly to the wall. This allows me to use the computerized TV guide to schedule recording TV shows when I want to. This choice however, excludes premium channels. (2) Connect the computer through the cable box. This allows me to record any program I want to, but the TV has to be tuned to that station and I cannot use the computer TV guide. Does anyone know of existence of a cable box that would allow me to have all the channels from the box output, and not just channel 3 or 4?? Last week I casually mentioned in a post that my old UUC EVO (generation-1) shifter blew it's cartridge bearing. Next thing I know Rob (mister UUC) posts that I should contact him. I called Fri. afternoon and we had a pleasant conversation. It seems there was a bad run of bearings early on. Bottom line he offers to replace it with a new EVO 3. Within 5 min I get an email from UUC that my shifter will be shipped that afternoon and will arrive Mon. What a class act. Rob "You Da Man". No affiliation just another happy customer.
