Hello, it’s Peter here and welcome to today’s Levy Letter. I hope your day is
going well and I hope you’ll be able to join me tonight on BBC One at half past
six as usual. I’ll have all the day’s news and Paul will have the forecast.

Tonight on the programme, we'll have the latest on the hunt for the killer of
Hull mother, Lynne Barwick. Humberside Police are launching a fresh appeal for
one very crucial witness to come forward. Along with those CCTV footage
pictures of Lynne’s last movements, the police are hoping to jog the memory of
local residents and help catch her killer. I’ll have the latest on that
investigation.

Look North will have a special report tonight from Boston as the police and
local ethnic minorities join forces to help prevent any trouble at this
weekend's World Cup match. They wish to prevent a repeat of the violence that
occurred at Euro 2004’s match between England and Portugal in the town of
Boston. I’ll have more on what’s being done to help prevent a repeat of the
trouble.

And on Look North, find out why greyhound racing is coming to an end in Hull.
The Boulevard Track is, apparently, going to the dogs, but I’ll have the full
story on that later.

Plus find out why goat's milk is going down a storm in the East Riding and the
jazz legend, Curtis Stigers, is joining me for a chat before his big concert in
Yorkshire. And can you believe it? I'll have the pictures of the unusual albino
donkey, which has just been born in a farm in Gainsborough. As you can imagine
it's turning a few heads! That’s at half past six as ever.

Big Screen

Tonight, the Big Screen in Hull is presenting the Marriage of Figaro live from
the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden. The entertainment starts at 6.30pm and
the actual performance begins at 7.00pm. It’s free to attend and we also
provide the chairs! It’s the 250th anniversary of Mozart, so it should be a
good time to see this performance. It’s also one of the most famous and most
easily accessible operas. So if you want to come along, then I hope you enjoy
it. That’s at the Big Screen where the Marriage of Figaro is being screened
live from the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden. The entertainment starts at
6.30pm, but the actual performance begins at 7.00pm!

Comedy

We were talking last night on the programme to the actress Gywneth Strong, who
played Cassandra in Only Fools And Horses. That’s the classic sitcom of course
with David Jason and Nicholas Lyndhurst and also the very talented Buster
Merryfield. But talking of comedy, I read in the paper this morning about John
Inman. John is now seventy-one and he played the shop assistant, Mr Humphries
in Are You Being Served? Sadly, it says, that John Inman is unwell with the
serious liver infection, Hepatitis. But he is still able to give quotes and
little snippets to the papers. The classic comedy actor, John Inman is
seventy-one and not very well at the moment, so we wish him well.

Ramsay

The professional swearer and part time chef…well that’s one way of putting it I
suppose! Gordon Ramsay has become so foul mouthed on the television now that
the bleep machine is no longer enough. Desperate programme editors are
struggling to censor his latest series and are now resorting to blurring his
mouth to prevent viewers from lip reading his expletives. The drastic action
was taken after the American audiences complained that the British cook’s
language was too hot to handle. In his show, Hell’s Kitchen, Gordon Ramsay
doesn’t pull any punches and the swearing is so bad that some people are
complaining that they can still lip read the swear words, so they are blurring
his mouth so as not to offend anyone.

Happiness

One paper has published the top ten list of things that we can do to make
ourselves feel happy. It says that bringing up children can leave, even the
most patient mother, feeling tired and irritable, but they’re asking how they
can put a smile on her face. Well, the things we need to do is to count our
blessings, list the ten things you like about yourself in a happiness diary and
have a laugh every day. Laughter comes easily to children, so try to giggle
yourself. Do a good turn – that will make you happy apparently, like let
someone else have your parking space or offer your partner a massage – that
will make you feel happy. Treat yourself every day, which could become
expensive of course. Halve your TV viewing, and say hello to a stranger. Just
smile and say hello to a stranger – I’m sure they will look at you as if you’re
potty, but I suppose it’s worth a go! Look after something you’ve planted in
the garden. Well, I’ve never planted anything. Get physical and do one hun!
dred skips every day and that will make you happy. I’ll think I’ll give that a
miss too! I’ve never heard so much rubbish in my life.

Desert Island Discs

Well, as you know Sue Lawley decided to call it a day on Desert Island Discs
earlier this year and there has been much discussion as to who would take over
one of the most prestigious jobs in radio. The BBC yesterday confirmed that
Channel 5 news presenter, Kirsty Young, has got the plum job. In the running
were Andrew Marr, Michael Palin and Michael Parkinson. They all wanted the job
as the Radio 4 host of the programme and it’s only been the fourth time that
there’s been a vacancy in sixty-four years. It’s gone to Kirsty Young though.
What do we think about that? Do you think she’s a good choice or not? There’s a
lot of people saying that they’re not sure at all. Your views on that or on
anything else, then get in touch.

And don’t forget if you’ve got a problem or an issue that you think we could
help you with on the programme, then get in touch – [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Keane

We’ve got some fab tickets to give away if you’re a fan of the band, Keane. Two
pairs of tickets to give away to see them when they come to Hull in October.
All you have to do is to name their new album, which has just been released.
Nice and simple, because there’s lots of advertisements for it on the
televison, so just name their new album and send me an email with the answer!
Thanks to those of you, who have entered so far. I’ve saved all of those, but
there’s still time for some more of you to enter. The winner will be announced
on Friday, so look out for that! Email me with the answer, if you want to
enter, to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Well, that’s it from me for today. Thanks very much for being there and for
reading the Levy Letter. Enjoy the programme tonight at half past six.

Take care,

Peter
