[JAWS-Users] Re: Windows Media Player and JAWS

2007-05-27 Thread Flor Lynch

I upgraded to WMP11 but was already using JAWS8 when i did so. It works
fine, though some minor things are configured a little differently and there
is extra DRM protection over WMP10 (I believe). If you do upgrade to WMP11
and are not happy with it, you can uninstall it.

 Hi:

I would like to know if anybody has had any experience with Media Player
11 in conjunction with JFW? I keep getting prompted to upgrade, but I
know of one person who has had trouble with 11, and my husband who is
sighted says it's set up a bit different than 10. I'm running JFW 7.10
with Windows XP. I don't want to get myself into something I shouldn't
because I'm not a computer wizard. Any feedback would be greatly
appreciated.

[JAWS-Users] Re: jaws losing focus

2007-05-26 Thread Flor Lynch

I have also found this, (and think it's a bug, or something I thought had
been fixed before), when reading or getting into RSS feeds. Hit Windows+m a
few times in succession, to get JAWS to speak again, then alt+tab back.
Sometimes, it may then be necessary to start SayAll again with a press of
Insert+DownArrow.

Hi all,
Since I went to jaws 8 Jaws loses focus when reading web pages. I am using
xp home and jaws 8.
When reading some WebPages especially my local paper jaws just stops and
places me in the in box of outlook express.
I do have the page maximized which does not make a difference. I ran into
the problem with both the page being maximized and not.
When I tab through the applications I get back to the web page on the line
that was being read.
Any suggestions?

[JAWS-Users] Re: opening up attachments

2007-05-24 Thread Flor Lynch

It usually means you don't have a program that knows the file type, or that
your Windows doesn't know what to do (what program to associate with) that
file-type. . What's the filename, (including the three-letter suffix), of
the attachment? Knowing that will help determine what the file actually is
and what corresponding program could be expected to open it in Windows.

[JAWS-Users] Re: forms mode question

This is often the case, so that, many times on Web pages, it is better to

Hello everyone,
I was on the bmg music web site, and I wanted to fill out the form to join
the club. I went into forms mode so that I could type the information into
the edit boxes. For example where I needed to type in my first name jaws
just says edit. I tabbed through all of the edit boxes and it just says
edit. I went out of forms mode and looked around on the page, and then jaws
would read first name, last name, mailing address etc. It is very
frustrating to have to go in and out of forms mode just to get something
filled out. Is there any way to get jaws to read this information while I'm
in forms mode? I hope I have explained this well enough, so you all will
understand what I'm trying too do. I am running jaws 6.0, and I have
windows XP home. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated!
Take care,
Lisa

[JAWS-Users] Re: Interesting Finds in the Recycle Bin

2007-05-19 Thread Flor Lynch

The reason it does this is in case of corruption of present .dbx files,
which can happen. In that circumstance, you could restore a .bak file to
make outlook Express usable again.

What that means my friend is that outlook express periodically compacts it's
DBX files, and as such places older copies of them in your recycle bin. So
in a nut shell dump them.

Hi folks,

As I don't belong to Rick's Blind Computing list yet, an oversight I may
have to reconcile fairly soon, especially if someone can't answer this
question for me, I must pose this question to this list. I hope David
doesn't mind, and if this is off-topic for the list, I would be more than
happy to receive answers to my question off-list at:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]

To the question at hand then...

While checking my recycle bin the other day, I noticed that there are
several files corresponding to the folders I have in my Outlook Express
program.

They are even named the same, save for a .BAK extension.

Obviously, the .BAK extension indicates that this is a back-up copy of my
folder files, but why are they in there?

I have not deleted any files pertaining to Outlook Express, nor have I run
any programs associated with Outlook Express, so I'm wondering how they got
there, and if there's a way to turn this feature off?

While I don't mind that these files are being backed up, it does me no good
if they are going directly to my recycle bin, as I may delete them at a
crucial time when I do need them.

I have checked out the properties of these files, and all they tell me is
that their origins are "Outlook Express" and nothing more.

If people could check to see if they are experiencing this, I would very
much appreciate it.

The only thing I have installed since this started happening are the normal
Windows and Microsoft updates, but none of them mentioned doing anything to
Outlook Express. They were all, either Windows updates, or Microsoft Office
Outlook updates.

If it helps any, I am using XP home edition, Jaws 7 and Outlook Express 6.

Any ideas?

Victor

hi Ricque,
yes tried looking there, but Norton isn't mentioned. I thought I remembered

being accessible with Jaws, that is why I asked. Do you know Ricque, if
there is a way of skipping through an email folder to those messages which
have not been read yet? I went through one of my other email folders the
other day. I caught up with all the emails I had not read over the last
month or so. However, I get a message when I go into that folder, that I
still have about 20 emails which are unread. I have a feeling, that they
might be quite old ones too. I think though, they might be mixed in with
ones I have already read. I tried pressing the letter U, while at the top of
the folder, but no luck. Just wondering if there is a faster method, than
going through the list one by one, to find those which arre unread?
thanks a lot Jason

2007-05-10 Thread Flor Lynch

If your printer is a 3-in-1 unit, i.e., can print, scan, and copy, (and
more?) then you could try scanning the paper copy and FineReader will do the
recognition, and save it, etc. that may be the way to go, if you can manage
it. The 3-in-1 printer/scanner/copier combos are not well favoured for
blind users.

[JAWS-Users] Re: a b y

2007-05-10 Thread Flor Lynch

You probably have a (demo) version of Abbyy FineReader. It is an OCR
program, which you would mostly use with an ATTACHED scanner. It would
also be able
to recognise images, and (if necessary as in most cases concerning us)
convert text into a readable form [that is, ignore pictures, or similar]. I
have not had experience, however, of FineReader's abilities to recognise and
convert images of text files - .prf's, AND SUCH. I think you may require a
scanner, to be able to scan the paper printout and so on. (Basically, there
are (ought to be) two distinct processes involved: Scanning, and
recognition.
Finereader does the recognition - or OCR. Photocopies may not be recognised
as well as original prints.) (Such
physical scanners are relatively cheap, depending on model and where you get
one.) Also, with a bit of manipulation, FineReader plus scanner can be got
to work with JAWS or any other screen reader.

[JAWS-Users] Re: AVG & saying attachment

2007-04-22 Thread Flor Lynch

better ask AVG support about that, or pay for it. (They don't offer tech
support for the free version, so they have to fund it anyway.)

It appears that you need to uncheck the incoming and outgoing Certify mail
checkboxes. To turn off this annoying AVG Free option, perform the
following
  steps:

  1. Open AVG, tab once to the control center button and hit space bar.

  2. Use alt plus V to open the view menu and down arrow to the components
submenu icon and then hit enter.

  3. Down arrow to the email scanner icon and then hit enter.

  4. Tab to the configure button and then hit enter.

  5. Tab to and uncheck the two Certify mail checkboxes.

  6. Now tab to the OK button and enter and then tab to the next Ok button
and enter. This should have eliminated the problem and you now can close AVG
  Free with alt plus F4.

included in the sent along in one piece message. Now, go to the bottm and

John, take a minute and fill out the form listed on the bottom of every

manager be able to do that using the form provided. This way the list

Hello, just a note on how I fianlly did away with all that hassle.
I just set up one hot key for the sappi voice that i wanted to defaut to.
That key is the one right above the tab key, don't know the
name of it. But i use it to say all in a sappi voice and i don't have to
go through all that extra key stroke stuff.
To me, FS somehow keeps making things harder and they should know that a
say all key is one of the most used keys we got. Why not just keep it
simple folks?

Rick,

Checked the tips & tricks and there are only two things under the AVG

Here is what it does. When I'm in the general outlook windo and scroll down
through my mail it says attachment for each message. I know some other
folks here have had this issue in the past and someone did come up with a
way to fix it. Since I was not having problems at that time I did not pay
too close attention to it.

[JAWS-Users] Re: Jaws help question

2007-04-17 Thread Flor Lynch

Go back to at highest JAWS7.0 and try that. (there is a specific non-XP
download - for Windows 98 and Millennium.) 7.1 saw the introduction of the
JAWS update feature which depends on the OS being (at least) Windows XP.
7.10 is not for anything lower than Windows XP.

[JAWS-Users] Re: Reversing Sleep Mode and Kurzweil Problems

2007-04-15 Thread Flor Lynch

Hi Shirley,

It is very unlikely that installing version 11 will cause your present
scanner not to work. The actual scanning is done by the scanner and its
drivers, itself; it is the OCR that Kurzweil does. To attempt to resolve
the Kurzweil 1000 JAWS Configuration problem:

1. From anywhere, open Configuration manager with Insert+6 (that's number
6), [and assuming that the Insert key is your 'JAWS' key - The JAWS key is
the relevant operator.]

2.  Hit Ctrl+o to open;

3. In the list view of files, keep hitting the letter k until Kurzweil 1000
is highlighted.

4. Open it then. (You are opening the Kurzweil1000.jcf.)

5.  Hit Alt+s for Set Options; and the letter a for Advanced;

6. There now is a checkbox, "sleep mode enabled, checkbox checked". hit
spacebar to uncheck it.

7. Tab over to ok your changes. and hit enter.

8. Hit Ctrl+s to save the change, or agree to save on the way out when you
press alt+f4 to exit the Configuration manager.
And finally:

9. Contact your friendly Kurzweil 1000 tech support to fix your problems
associated with K1000 installation, and scanner.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] Reversing Sleep Mode and Kurzweil Problems

Good evening Everyone!
Last Thursday I wanted to scan some information that is not accessible in
any other media. It had been several months since I used Kurzweil, but
obviously, something is messed up big time. For some unknown reason, when I
began to start a scan, I heard a little ding and all speech ceased. I tried
everything I could think of to regain speech, but ended up restarting my
system. I phoned tech support at Kurzweil, and the nice gentleman there
suggested that I download the latest driver for my EPSON scanner. Thanks to
a terrific tech support friend at FTP, that was accomplished yesterday. To
wipe the slate clean, so to speak, I removed Kurzweil from the control
panel, did a disk cleanup, a defrag, then installed Kurzweil again.
Initially, it seemed to be working just fine, which thrilled me, and
consequently, I followed the steps from the JAWS-Users site to put JAWS to
sleep. I think I did it correctly, but unfortunately after refreshing my
memory on all the various key functions of Kurzweil, that nasty little ding
to begin a scan, totally halted all speech again. In pure frustration, I
removed Kurzweil again, but now whenever I alt-tab, Jaws tries to speak, but
is abruptly silenced. My question is, How do I reverse the steps of putting
JAWS to sleep? I have three versions of JAWS on my computer; 5.1 was the one
I used last night, primarily because it has always functioned the best. I
have a real aversion to messing with settings, but logic tells me that there
must be a way to safely reverse that process.
It was suggested that I upgrade Kurzweil from version 7, which is what I
have now, to the latest version, which is 11. I am trying to decide now
whether to call tech support at Kurzweil again, or wait until my son visits
in six weeks. Something tells me that if I upgrade Kurzweil, my scanner will
most likely need to be replaced as well.
Hopefully, my explanation is understandable. If any of you have advice on
any of the above mentioned, please pass it my way. I would appreciate your
feedback. Thanks in advance.
For now...Shirley

[JAWS-Users] Re: RE TELEPHONE NUMBERS

2007-04-15 Thread Flor Lynch

Many people routinely include their contact details (including their work or
business telephone numbers) as part of their email signatures, which may
well have been set up to be done automatically at their end. . I've seen
telephone numbers given out on bigger lists than this one, and nobody
murmured afterwards. It is still worth bearing in mind, though. there is a
risk, but iit is comparatively small. There are several Thousand email
lists and on several different listservs out there for people to trawl.

[JAWS-Users] Re: FS Demo

2007-04-15 Thread Flor Lynch

You would have installed the FSReader Demo and Training in or after the
installation of JAWS6. Likewise, in JAWS7 and JAWS8 it comes as one of the
last prompts in the installation. perhaps you did not install it with them?
There was some difference made to it at the time of JAWS7.0 - and I
ascertained that by going in there myself with JAWS8. Indeed, subject to
confirmation or an official denial, it's possible that JAWS8 (as a
different and then new version) has a new DAISY training set-up.

  Lisa,

I don't advise deleting the Windows temp files, but they are mainly
located in the, c:\windows\system32 folder. Plus there may be others
scattered around in various applications. But again, unless you know what
you are deleting, I don't advise it.
The Internet temp files are located in, c:\documents and settings\(your
profile name)\local settings\temporary Internet files. This is where your
temp files and cookies are stored. Most of these files provide faster
loading of visited web pages. I don't see that it affects the performance
of your PC by removing them.

Lisa,
Sorry it has taken me a couple of days to get back to you.
The, %temp% command will delete the temp files in the root directory.
It doesn't remove the Windows temp files or the Internet temp files.
As for the cookies, that is up to you whether you want to delete them or
not. Deleting them won't do anything to enhance the performance of your PC.

Hi Denny,
Thank you for these other computer maintenance tasks. I will make them
a regular part of my monthly computer maintenance routine. Is cleaning out
the temp files the same as deleting temporary Internet files? If it is not,
how would I do that? Also I would like to know about cookies, what are
they, should they be deleted, and if so how often should I delete them? I
hope that I haven't asked too many questions here, but I would like to keep
my computer running smoothly. Thanks again!
Take care,
Lisa

  Lisa,
You can perform 3 of the tasks mentioned.
  1. Check Disk
Go to run and type in,
chkdsk /f (drive letter): and press enter. Note the colon after the
drive letter. Unlike running a check disk on your C drive, you won't need
to reboot for this to perform.

  2. Scan Disk
Per form the scan disk just as you would on the C drive, but of course
highlighting the drive you want to scan as opposed to the C drive. Then
just follow the instructions as you would for the C drive. Again, you won't
have to reboot for this to run.

  3. Defrag
Perform as you would for the C drive but again, highlight the drive
you want to defrag.

One more step that I didn't include in those instructions is cleaning
up the temp files.
This should be performed on the C drive.
Close all applications with the exception of Jaws.
Go to run and type in: %temp% and press enter. Note the percent sign
before and after temp.
Press enter. This will bring up a list of temp files that you can
delete.
Do a control A to select all.
  Now do a shi

2007-04-13 Thread Flor Lynch

Others have asserted that when messages are deleted from Deleted Items they
are deleted permanently. that's the simple answer. In fact, they are still
on the computer but not in a usable form, and it is the compaction of all
folders process which removes them entirely. If, for instance, you had a
corruption problem with one of your .dbx files - one of the OE folders - you
might delete that folder and recover an older version of it which would
contain some older messages. It's not a straightforward process, however.

[JAWS-Users] Re: Question about compacting messages in OE

2007-04-12 Thread Flor Lynch

Have you done, or can you do, a manual Compact All Folders> You would do
this - from the message list - with keystrokes alt+f f f . Some months
back there was a Windows update which altered the behaviour of Compacting
All Folders, where it now backs up and delete the old uncompacted Outlook
Express 'files' which are thence stored in the Recycle Bin.

Ugh, this is a considerable problem then. It's happening far more frequently
than every hundredth time. Thanks for the info. Do you know if this is the
case in every version of OE? I'm running (I believe, since I can't cut and

[JAWS-Users] Re: block senders list

2007-04-02 Thread Flor Lynch

I would concur with Dave in that only one sender at a time can be removed
from the blocked senders list. The messages from blocked senders (without
additional steps, such as deleting messages from server) go only into the
Deleted items folder. One can from time to time check Deleted items, to see
if there were genuine messages caught up in the general spam filttration as
well as those that were indubitably spam.

When you installed Skype, as you may have done recently, during installation
did you receive a notification about the Google Toolbar? It would then have
installed by default, unless you had unchecked it at that point. Just a

either the Google toolbar or some other toolbar unwittingly installed that's
causing the problems you experience.

Hello,
I have started having some strange behavior from IE6. When I go to
a web site that I want placed in my Favorites list, I use the keystroke
control + d to add the site. Recently I have been getting a message that
you have added this site to your favorites list. Do you want to do this? I
have made no changes in settings. Would anybody have any clues as to how to
resolve this behavior? If it doesn't pop up this message, it creepes up
when I am using Outlook Express. As I am arrowing through my emails, Jaws 7
will read the sender's name and say, favorites, add. Any assistance would
be appreciated. Thanks in advance.
Smile! GOD loves you!

[JAWS-Users] Re: Problem with DecTalk USB

I sent the following question to the list but received no answer.

What kind of file is this jsdtusb.jls and where should it be in order for it
to load with JAWS?

Can someone help me with this?

Arianna Calesso

I have DecTalk USB as my default synth. It's been working just fine, but
this afternoon I have a message that says, "Cannot load jsdtusb.jls."

How do I get this to load so that DecTalk USB will be the startup default
synth?

If one wished to upgrade to IE7 one could, freely, update JAWS7.0 to

It doesn't work perfectly with the new IE, but reasonably.

[JAWS-Users] Re: I E 7 Question

2007-03-28 Thread Flor Lynch

You should update to at least JAWS7.10 before upgrading your Internet
Explorer. IE7 has easy access to RSS newsfeeds and podcasts. Tabbed
browsing - the ability to have several Web pages in the one window - is also
another useful feature. The security is also much higher in IE7.

Hi Reese,

You can manage the Google toolbar by going to your tools menu, then arrow
down to manage add-ons.

The Google bar should be in there somewhere.

I can't help you any further than this as I don't have that bar installed,
but I'm sure there's no shortage of people here that have had to deal with
this same problem.

[JAWS-Users] Re: help with jaws and macromedia flash

2007-03-21 Thread Flor Lynch

When a Web site requires a Flash player update, it will tell you so. Within
the Flash movie content, there will be buttons [Flash movie button, etc.]
that you would left-click once to activate. The latest version of Flash
player is (I think) Flash player 9. I don't know how versions of JAWS prior
to the current version cope with Flash player 9. If there are no buttons to
click on within the Flash movie, I think we may be out of luck with getting
anything meaningful from the Flash content.

Hi folks,

I've run into a problem and maybe one of you can help. I hit a site where
JAWS reads:

Clickable, On Mouse Over

Now, ordinarily, that makes the text said mouse is over clickable. But on
this site in particular, it isn't. The text appears, alerts me I should be
able to click, but apparently this is JAVA script that is poorly done (or so
a friend has suggested). Does anybody know if there is some sort of
keystroke command that will enable clicking, or some other way to navigate
these would-be links? Any help is much appreciated.

Best,

[JAWS-Users] Reading in one window, doing something in another

2007-03-18 Thread Flor Lynch

A few days ago - was it? - Kerry Ann Ifill was looking for something that
could be doing one in one window, while reading something else in another.
The solution to that is, so far, called tabbed browsing, which has come
into prominence with Firefox and is now in Windows Internet Explorer 7. We
might expect to see tabbed browsing become more widespread across Microsoft
products, as with office 2007, and indeed more prevalent in Windows Vista;
and a consequence of that would probably be the adoption of it for different
JAWS tasks.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] Jaws and internet explorer 7

Hi list,
I have a windows update ready to be installed in my system tray. I think it
might be Internet explorer 7, but not sure. I remember a lot of people
having concerns about installing I.E 7. I was wondering what the general
view of I.E 7 with Jaws 8.0 and Windows XP are? Are people still having
major issues with it or what?
Thanks a lot
Jason

[JAWS-Users] Re: Why is Jaws slow to speak?

2007-03-16 Thread Flor Lynch

A repair of JAWS6 can be done by: Start menu, Programs; JAWS6; alt+t for
Tools, then arrow to or hit i for Installation and maintenance. In the
ensuing dialogue, down-arrow to choose the Repair radiobutton, and proceed.
I don't think repairing JAWS will fix the slowness issue, since it would
seem to be more computer-general related; but the above is how you repair
earlier versions of JAWS up until recent versions.

May be someone else on this list will write if they know how to go in to
the JAWS folders to initiate a repair. The only way I know how to do this,
is to put your 6.0 disk back in and start an installation. 1 or 2 steps in
to it, you will have a chance to click on Repair. Go ahead and click on
Repair and see if that helps.

Beyond this, I think you'll need to contact Freedom Scientific for help.

I hope it works out for you! Vicky V

Hi, You can call Freedomscientific and ask them to send you a CD with the
files you need to activate or authorize your JAWS. However, I tried that
and they told me when I called them after 2 weeks, that they had no record
of me asking for such a disk. So, call and re-call and make sure that they
did indeed do it.

Just today, I gave up and asked a friend to help change the internet cable
from one computer to the other, which aloud me to get everything done and
then he changed it back for me.

The end of all this is: Good Luck!

[JAWS-Users] Re: JAWS 8, IE7 and the toolbar

2007-03-14 Thread Flor Lynch

No, you can't get rid of it. However, you can change it around, if it's
worth it! Try exploring options on it with the right-mouse button - before
you make changes. Personally, I find IE7's drawbacks minor compared to its
new features - things like RSS feeds (news feeds and podcasts).

Is there any way to get rid of that darned toolbar or whatever you call it
at the top of the page in IE7? It's where they have live search and
favorites, etc.

I can't say I'm crazy about IE7.

I think that the problem is some times in an email message the words come
across but not the meaning in such cases. So as a result a person might not
intend to offend, but it does happen even to the most well meaning of us.
Your directions were correct if in fact John's status bar would have been
turned on, which is what I had him do when he called me. This makes me
consider the fact that in the future when any of us post instructions we
should all be even more mindful of leaving no stone unturned in the details
department. My wife even said last night that she didn't know you could turn
off your status bar, since she's never seen a computer set that way, so I
told her that it is and always been a toggle kind of thing. So now that I've
given everybody two things to think about I'll climb down off my soap box,
good thing I'm not afraid of heights.

In every class I have taught about computers, the term "memory capacity" is
often used to refer to the computer's ability to store data. Perhaps it is
a turn of phrase with which you aren't familiar.

Unfortunately, I followed your directions using Jaws and did not get the
result you indicated. The message referred to "MS DOS CAPACITY 0" and
that's nonsense. According to my Disk Defragmenter, I have 63% remaining
which is far from 0. I believe that there might be a step missing or that I
am misunderstanding your directions.
Finally, I would like to suggest that you avoid being quite so abrupt and
rude in future. I have seen you in a lot of trouble here before and many
people were happy and willing to assist you. Your lack of familiarity with
the terms I used is no excuse for rudeness, especially given the fact that I
made a reasonable request in a polite and non-confrontational manner. How

Unfortunately, the directions Flore provided were missing a step or 2.
Other than that, they were right on.
Here's the part that was left out.

Before attempting to read the status line using the Jaws + Page Down or
number pad 3, go to the View menu and make sure that your Status Bar is
turned on by pressing B.
After that, the directions work just fine.

My thanks to David for helping me to find the problem.

There's a bit more than just video intercept stuff involved, certainly when
it came to making JAWS compatible with IE7 (to which office 2007 apparently
bears resemblances).

Lisa; try downloading the very latest version of JAWS as a demo and install
it, you can obviously try that to see how it works but then if you go back
to running the old version of JAWS it should have updated stuff like the
video intercept sufficiently to do the job.

  Hi Lisa,

Sounds like you have a couple of problems.
First off, support for Microsoft office 2007 starts with version 8 I
believe, so I do think your version is too old.
Secondly, these they have changed the entire layout for office 2007. It
think now they call them ribbons instead of tool bars or some such thing.
Someone else on here may be able to give you some extra tips, but I think
you'll need to upgrade your jfw to get maximum use out of your new
programme.

  Hello everyone,
When I write letters I have always used the HJ pad, and I found it quite
easy to use. I recently purchased and installed Microsoft office student
and home adition 2007 on my computer. This includes Microsoft word which I
always wanted to have because I thought it would be better then the HJ pad.
I opened up a blank document in Word to write a letter, and I hit my alt
key, so I could have a look at the menues. All it said was home tab press
control tab to switch pages. I have never used Word 2003 with jaws, but a
friend told me that the menues are totally accessible with jaws. I am
running jaws 6, so I'm wondering if my version of jaws is too old for this
newest version of Microsoft Word, or has Microsoft totally changed the way
Word 2007 looks? When I rooted jaws to PC I didn't find things like file,
edit, view, tools, and format. If anyone could help figure this out i'd
really appreciate it!!! I have windows XP home adition, and I'm running
jaws 6.
  Take care,
  Lisa ,

[JAWS-Users] Re: JAWS 8 Update requires a new SMA?

2007-03-04 Thread Flor Lynch

Maybe you can, but I don't think so or I don't know that you can (at this
point). however, when the next upgrade is official, you would find a list
of serial numbers allowed to download it because of their owners' SMA's. If
you are still concerned, perhaps you could email Freedom Scientific and ask
them for clarification.

That has been a fault of many JAWS updates in the past also. Your SMA count
was not reduced by the update from HJAWS8.0 to the latest, whatever it says.
FS have the correct information in their database. (This scenario has been

Hi list members,

I had bought an SMA with the JAWS version 7.1. Some months ago I updated to
version 8.0.423. After the installation I have only one SMA for JAWS 9.x --
so I thought.

When I updated the public beta 1163 on the new one last night was me at once
SMA unite removed. I have none vacant more now.
Is this a fault of FS or which grounds are behind this?

I assumed that the update is free from 8.0.423 on 8.0.1163.

If I remember that correctly, it was called in the last FS Podcast, that
anyway this update is free furthermore, too?

There is absolutely no difference at all between the home and pro versions
other than the fact you get to contribute to somebody's Mercedes payment.
As for your second question I ran an older version in "demo mode" for about
two weeks before making the decision to upgrade. If you work in a competitive
environment where pay is based on performance rebooting every 40 minutes can be
a pain not to mention hard on the paycheck.

  Hi everyone,
need to ask a question. I was installing Jaws 8.0 onto a desktop at work.
This was my first time installing Jaws at work. Until now, I have been using my
laptop from home. The installation went fine. When it came to authorize Jaws, I
put my authorization disk in and selected the internet option for registration.
A message came up, saying that this application, is not authorized to run on:
XP Pro, Windows 2000 and Nt. I then remembered, that I only have Jaws standard.
Until now, that is all I have needed, as I run Windows XP Home, on my desktop
at home and Windows ME on(my now old) laptop. My local Jaws distributor, says I
can upgrade my Jaws to the Jaws Pro version, for about $270-$370(I have
forgotten the exact price). That is Australian dollars, so don't pass out with
the price all you American users "smile". My question is, what does Jaws Pro
have, that Jaws Standard doesn't? I know I can just keep running Jaws in 40
minute mode on the work computer and just reboot, to get another 40 minutes. Is
there a limit to how many 40 minute demoes you can do? I can get most of my
work needs done by doing that. However, i am thinking that most other work
places will have XP Pro as well. Therefore, I am wondering if it is just as
well upgrading to Jaws Pro. I suppose too, that Windows Vista, will start to
become more widely used over the next few years or so too. Would upgrading to
Jaws Pro now, cover me for Windows Vista too, or is that not known yet? If I do
go with Jaws Pro, is it downwards compatible i.e will I be able to run it on my
home desktop, which is only running Windows XP Home and not Pro?
Sorry for all the questions, but I don't know much about Jaws Pro.
Look forward to hearing from you soon
  Jason

[JAWS-Users] Re: question about Jaws Pro

2007-02-27 Thread Flor Lynch
Yes XP home is covered by the JAWS XP pro authorisation; and it is downward
compatible. I would have thought that, in a work situation, it is worth the
hundreds so that you won't have to reboot every 40 mins. Each forty-minute
demo version lasts only six months from date of publishing. You will nneed to
have an SMA with JAWS8 to be covered for Vista. I'll let someone else detail
that one.

Hello Everyone,

Have you ever wanted to push the keyboard away from your desk and simply use
your voice to control your computer? Wouldn't it be nice to be like a
doctor and simply dictate your email messages, letters and other work using
your voice? The possibilities are here. This week on Main Menu we talk all
about the new release of J-Say Professional Version 5.0 from T&T

Brian Hartgen joins us in the first hour and gives us a demonstration of
some of the new features of J-Say Professional 5.0.

In the second hour of Main Menu Live we bring on Terry Clasper from T&T
Consultancy and Sue Martin from the Veterans Administration. Terry is one
of the developers of J-Say Professional and Sue is a trainer and user of
J-Say Professional. We will talk to them more about J-Say Professional.
One of the things we want to explore is whether or not they will support the
new Vista speech recognition features. Most importantly though, you will be
able to talk to our guests on Main Menu Live.

We will open the phone lines at the top of the hour to allow you to call in
and ask any questions you have for our guests. The number to call into the

In case it isn't clear how you turn off pop-ups, which you would do for this

right-mouse button to bring up the context menu, and arrow around to explore
the options. Click on the one you want or hit the letter indicated. I think
there's a similar item in Firefox. I(I would have to say that it is more

Hi Christopher,

You need to turn off pop-up blocking (for the site), and then it is accessible.

  Hi all,
As part of my BTEC HND Computing Information Systems module "Computer
Platforms", I have to look at this website and read the latest issue of
this. However, this website doesn't appear to be quite accessible with
JAWS 8 demo. I was using Mozilla Firefox 2 to view this page. Could
anyone duplicate this, and if so how can I get to the reviews? Thanks,

That's interesting I've never heard of your particular problem and I use
  Office 2000...
About the only thing I've had issues with concerning Word and with Jaws on
any version was with Norton's plug in on the micellaneous tab that has to be
unchecked or otherwise jaws seems to not work correctly in word for me
  anyways..
Once that is unchecked jaws works as expected without any hitches.

[JAWS-Users] Re: glad to be on the list

2007-02-18 Thread Flor Lynch
The JAWS implementation of Eloquence could be improved in minor ways, like
lengthening the punctuation pauses to make them sound more likea natural
reader. This would make it more comfortable for the user reading longer
documents. It would also make it possible for the user to increase the speech
rate a good deal more than at present, while maintaining speech comprehension.

How is it so difficult to understand that is the compromise?

It takes a lot more code to be executed and a lot more memory to be accessed
to provide very high quality human sounding speech. This takes time and
  computer processor cycles.

There is a reason why super sonic jet fighters are very small and not well
suited to hauling cargo. It might be possible to get similar performance out
of a wide body passenger jet with enough effort but the example of Concord
demonstrates people aren't willing to pay for it.

In this day and age for sure blind people are not willing to pay for that
level of performance, what I constantly hear is that blind people aren't
happy about paying for current levels of performance.

Sorry moderator if this is verging on the limits of list topic. It seems
though that we are unsure about what it is we require from our access
technology, access, versatility, speed, luxury or just what? Be careful what
you wish for. Our scanning and reading software hasn't brought us any real
advances in print reading for at least a decade. It does give us all sorts
of voices and dictionaries and buggy access to already available libraries
which many of us are refused access to but the actual reading capability
depends on other software providers like Abbey.

For my money I would prefer screen access technology which gives me reliable
screen access to all of the functions of my computer and so long as it is
intelligible I'll accept that until the primary functions are achieved. When
we no longer have queries about scripts to be able to use this or that, when
all Web sites are rendered intelligible, when Word or Access or Visual Basic
and other IDES work for us then is the time to worry about absolute language
perfection. Seamless and convenient access is where I prefer Freedom
Scientific to spend their development time and money on.

[JAWS-Users] Re: Mouse Over Question

2007-02-17 Thread Flor Lynch
There is a specific keystroke in JAWS to active the OnMouseOver element, and
that is - if I'm not mistaken, which is possible - ctrl+insert+enter (in
Internet Explorer). . Some OnMouseOver links display extra text that wouldn't
be shown if the MouseOver element wasn't activated. It's covered a bit in the
JAWS Help topics.

Mouse over is simply an event that is coded with HTML. It basically
means that if a sighted user hovers over the link with their mouse
something happens, such as playing a sound. I think it's just the case
of pressing enter on the "mouse over" in order to perform the action,
but I am not exactly sure. Hope that helps.

One can indeed use 'where the too or CC line contains' as the condition for a
rule and be successful - that's what I usually do; and you don't need the
complete address for the rule to take effect. (Any part of the text of the
address will do, provided that - among addresses for which you have made rules
- it is unique to that address.)

  Hi,

No, if you use the complete address of the list, you'll find that your
messages go into your inbox anyway.

That's because you'll notice that the messages aren't coming from the list
address, they are coming from the people themselves. They are only being sent
through the list.

Your best bet is to use the subject field as the criteria for sorting the
messages.

You'll have to use the words jaws-users and mind the dash between the two
words.

  Victor

Yes but consider the fact that each voice engine contains it's own

Hi Steve & Shannon,
In what context do you encounter this?
Does ms stand for Microsoft, or miz, or what?
Depending on where and how you encounter this, you can just create a
dictionary entry for it.

You receive messages in your Inbox or its created subsidiaries or co-equals.
You send messages into your outbox, or you send immediately (shortcut through

  Larry,

Seems to me that the "Outbox" is one of those standard folders that's
created when you install Outlook or Outlook Express. I have Outlook 2000
(although I do not use that email client in deference to Outlook Express)
and I too have an "Outbox."

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the "Outbox" is a holdover from the
old dial-up modems where it took considerable time to get messages on to
their eventual destinations. The Outbox was (and still is so far as I can
tell) a temporary holding folder for messages on their way on to the
  Internet Highway.

[JAWS-Users] Re: Tips and Tricks?

2007-02-11 Thread Flor Lynch
I have found that, though the options are available, it doesn't work.
Clearling the start menu, in Settings Taskbar customize start menu Start Menu
Clear Button, clears the run dialog and the documents submenu. Or you can
delete your History file which would delete the run dialogue. Clearing the
start menu, as above, does not rid of the programs on your start menu.

[JAWS-Users] Re: Jaws crashing when saving to A drive

2007-02-11 Thread Flor Lynch
No, a reinstall does not of itself use up one of your activations. Your
Internet activation or floppy authorized key remain on your hard drive until
manually or provisionally removed by you or if (in the case of ILM) some
hardware change is made to the computer. If installing on a new machine, then
a new activation is used there. There may come a time when future JAWS will
not recognise the floppy authorization as valid, I would suppose.

  Hi Flor,
yes I think you might be right. I will however, try a repair on Jaws first,
just incase I might be lucky. If that doesn't work, then I will do a reinstall.
I take it, that doing a reinstall will also use up one of my Jaws activations.
I only have 1 left, so will need to get those refreshed. When installing Jaws
7.0, I was told by my local dealer, to use the authorization disk from Jaws 6.0
to activate Jaws. He said that after Jaws 6.0, no new disks are being issued.
Does this mean that for all future Jaws versions, we have to use the same disk
over and over? I know that ILM has changed things a lot, but it seems a bit odd.
  Thanks a lot

  Hi everyone,
I have been having trouble with my laptop at work. I have recently
installed Jaws 7.0 on to my laptop, which is running Windows ME. Because it is
windows ME, Jaws 7.0 is the highest version I can now go to on it. My problem
is, Jaws is running fairly well and I can save to the laptop hard-drive fine.
However, I am having trouble when saving to floppy disk on the A drive. What
happens, is I press F12 to save the file onto the A drive(I have just saved to
the C drive). I hear the floppy whirring like normal. Once it has finished
saving, Jaws crashes. This also happens, if someone else uses the touch-pad on
the laptop in order to save to the A drive. I have been told the error message,
says something about JFW encountering an error and had to shut-down. The
message also says something about braille something or other. I have never used
a braille display. To my knowledge, I have never installed any braille drivers
etc(apart from those which may come standard with the Jaws program). I have
tried different floppy disks too, but still the same problem happens. I am
hoping to get Jaws 8.0 up and going on the desktop computers at work. However,
the laptop is my own personal one and I naturally, would like to solve this
issue. I do have my desktop for my usual computing use. Like I said though,
would like to work this out. Thought I would ask here, before getting Acer(who
are the manufacturer) to have a look at the A drive, incase it is faulty.
Look forward to hearing from you
  Jason

  Hi list,
I have been having trouble with shortcut keys. I had the short cut key
control alt J for Jaws 7.0 and control alt K for Jaws 6.20. I am going to
install Jaws 8.0 and so thought I would change the Jaws 7.0 hotkey to control
alt K instead of Jaws 6.20. I always like to have my old version of Jaws as a
back-up, incase I have problems with the new version. I lost my Jaws 7.0 hotkey
of control alt J when I did a repair of Jaws recently. I therefore did the
following procedure to reassign the new order of hotkeys I want. I selected
Jaws 6.20 on the desktop. I then pressed applications. I arrowed up to
properties and went into it. I tabbed across to the create hotkey section(or
whatever it was called). I deleted the current hotkey of control alt K. I heard
Jaws say something about "none". I tabbed to the okay button and pressed
spacebar. I went back to the desktop and selected Jaws 7.0. I then followed the
above procedure. However, instead of deleting the hotkey(there wasn't one to
delete anyway), I typed the letter K. I tabbed and shifted tab back to make
sure it had taken. I heard Jaws say Hotkey "control alt K". I tabbed to okay
and hit spacebar. However, when I unloaded Jaws 7.0 and pressed the hotkey
"control alt K", nothing happened. Jaws didn't come up speaking. I had to
reboot in order to get Jaws 7.0 up again. Have I done something wrong here?
  Thanks a lot
  Jason

2007-02-08 Thread Flor Lynch
It is where he says. Be sure you're following the precise file path, not a
similar one. Also, you are using Windows XP? this matters indeed. (If you
are not using Windows XP, the following does not apply.)

You might not get there by a run path. So, Windows Explorer: Go to C: then hit
d for Documents and Settings; open it with right-arrow; look for your computer
user name, and expand the folder  with right-arrow:  Application Data, expand;
down to Microsoft, expand; down to templates, and then tab into the list view.
At that point, if you hit the letter n you will highlight "normal.dot", or hit
n until you do. Then, delete that file.

  Hello mr. Stansifer.

I use MsWord 2003. What I'm thinking about is that
  you've made some
changes in font dialogue and pressed the default button.
  This saves the
changes you've made to the default template. This template
  contains the
instructions what font, size, stile and so on witch word
  should use as
default formatting when it starts. . To solv this problem
  close Word if it
is opened and go to C:\Documents and
  Settings\Username\Application
Data\Microsoft\Templates and delete the Normal.dot file.
  There's no problem
to do this because the next time you start Word this file
  will be recovered
with its dafault instructions. Then open Word and type some
  text to see
  what's happening.

  Good luck.
  Hope this helps.

  Negoslav

Any ideas on why this might be happening and what I might do

  Hi list,
I need a reminder. Where do you go, in order to find out what programs Jaws
work with? There is a section in the Jaws menu/folder which gives you a list of
programs Jaws works with, along with Jaws commands to work the program. I went
into the Jaws menu, into help and into the section "what's new in Jaws...", but
couldn't find the section I need. Secondly, I originally downloaded Jaws 7.0
from the FS website. I therefore didn't receive the training materials. Before
upgrading to Jaws 8.0, I wanted to install these training materials, just
incase I need to return to Jaws 7.0. I did a repair of Jaws 7.0 using the
software CD. When I go into help and then training, I enter on FS reader demo
etc. I hear the guy from FS talking and he tells you about the FS reader. Can I
assume then, I have installed the training materials successfully? The reason I
ask, is the FS guy talks about accessing DAISY books on the software CD. If I
have installed them, wouldn't these DAISY books now be on my computer. I am
using Windows XP, if that is relevant and Jaws 7.0. Like I said, I will be
upgrading to 8.0, but want to keep 7.0 as a back-up.
  Thanks a lot
  Jason

You will needd JAWS8x for Windows Vista. It may well be the same with office

  Hello!

I recently purchased JAWS 71, just prior to the latest upgrade. What I'd
like to know is will JAWS 71 work with Vista and the new Office suite? Do we
have to download or upgrade JAWS 71 or anything or has FS prepared us for this
and made it accessible through JAWS 71.

You know, it still upsets me that FS (or one of their resalers) sold me JAWS
71 in November of 2006, when they new JAWS 80 was coming out within the same
month. What would J. Mosen think about this one I wonder?

If Windows Vista and/or Office 2007 are not accessable with JAWS 71, I think
Freedom Scientific should give all of us JAWS 71 owners a free upgrade to
version 8. A good public relations thing for them to do.

Anyway, thanks for your info on my topic.

[JAWS-Users] Re: Burning a Cd with Media Player

2007-02-03 Thread Flor Lynch
Where did the files originally come from? Perhaps some DRM (Digital Rights

such. How are you 'clicking the icon', next to each item in the 'burn list'?

  Hello fellow JAWS users!

David suggested that I send this message to the list, so here it is. Today
was my first adventure into the world of burning a CD, and I felt confident
following the instructions available on the JAWS-Users web site. Hopefully,
someone can answer my questions, or at least help me understand what needs
to be done. This is what I initially sent to David, along with my thanks for
the audio tutorial pertaining to message rules for Outlook Express.
  ***
I also appreciate your instructions about burning CDs with Windows Media
Player. I was hesitant to experiment, but decided to give it a whirl. I had
no problem burning my first two CDs; however, now I am being given the
following message when I reach the point of the prompt to start the burning
  process:

  Windows Media Player Close Button
It is not possible to burn this list of files because all of the files have
errors or are missing burn rights. To learn more about the problems, click
the icon next to each file in the burn list. OK button

If my memory is correct, there were 502 in the list, which seems to be
everything I have played with this program. I tried to determine what the
error prompt referred to, or how to clear the items in this Burn list, but
  no luck with either.

That's my problem. Perhaps I should use a different program. Any and all
suggestions or advice would be appreciated.

  Thanks in advance!

  For now...Shirley

Thanks all for the help. If you decide you want only to change the "Say
All" voice and not Eloquence totally, this is what I found out.
Insert 6 for Configuration Manager. Hit enter.
Control-shift D for Default Hit enter.
Alt S for settings. Hit enter.
Down arrow to Say All Options and hit enter.
Tab to list of voices. Up and down arrow to select voice.
  Tab to OK button. Enter.
Alt F4 and answer Yes to save.

  Becky,
Press insert J to open JAWS

   open with right arrow

  open with right arrow
  downarrow to SAPI5.
When you enter on that, you'll be able to change the voices just like you do

[JAWS-Users] Re: the reply to one person feature

You should also look through your Options in Outlook Express Tools Options. My
guess, and it's just a guess, when the script doesn't work is that where the
'sender' is hidden for any reason, they aren't visible to JAWS, and that's the
end of it. I may take a look at the Reply To Sender script - though I don't

And the update to JAWS8 that you will see - in the near future - is not a beta

[JAWS-Users] Re: Vista and Jaws?

2007-02-01 Thread Flor Lynch
This means that, although you may get a new Vista-operated computer, if you
install JAWS8 on it it won't count against your SMA, although you will lose
another allowed authorization - which you can retrieve in the usual manner by
contacting Freedom Scientific as hitherto. Also, Eric has said that there will
be a JAWS8 update that is both Vista- and XP- comppatible 'in early February'.
The JAWS8 update and future JAWS versions, to paraphrase the much-esteemed
Eric, ""the update will be smart enough to know your OS, whether you have
Windows XP or Windows Vista." JAWS for Windows Vista is ... getting ready.

It will. Eric tells Jonathan this in the FS podcast. XP and Vista are
being jointly supported. your SMA on XP will work with Vista, and vice
versa, if you should downgrade for some reason. You don't lose an SMA
count if you upgrade to Vista from XP. You do need to have JAWS8 for this
upgrade. More info is due at fsactivate.com and probably more is about
to be published on this subject. But FS will be monitoring to make sure
that people's SMA's are properly honoured.

to Vista from XP. You do need to have JAWS8 for this upgrade. More info is
due at fsactivate.com and probably more is about to be published on this
subject. But FS will be monitoring to make sure that people's SMA's are
properly honoured.

If the next SMA in line is for jaws for vista and you still use the xp/OS
will this version still work or will one have to upgrade to vista?

  Thanks

[JAWS-Users] Re: the reply to one person feature

2007-02-01 Thread Flor Lynch
I should note, and it adds a wrinkle, that the Reply-To-Sender script doesn't
always swork - the sender is sometimes not displayed in the to field of the
reply message - especially, it seems, at least some list messages. Yes, the
reply is opened and all of that, but you still have to type in the sender's
name or email addy. (Not can it, but does it, make a difference if you already
have the address in your Address Book?)

There are different types of DSL; and yes, there is a type of DSL that uses
dial-up. (Probably time-limited in some way.)

[JAWS-Users] Re: Toggle between normaltext and compressed line on braille display

2007-01-29 Thread Flor Lynch
Yes, the BrailleNote is a 'note-taker' and comes with some of its own standard
keys applied when using it as a braille display with a screen reader. I know
that you can do other things like PC editing with the Pac Mate. Could you be
in the wrong mode?

When you try to apply a braille hot key, you need to be in the keyboard
manager, usually the default keyboard manager. After you hit ctrl+a to add the
keystroke, tab to ok and enter. You will be asked, "are you sure you want to
change..." and you should answer yes. Also, use the braille display's (Pac
mate's) own keys. If you don't like a hot key, you can change or delete it,
same dialogue. Again, if you want to save your changes you answer yes to the
prompt when exiting.

and press a unassigned key from my PM display, don't happens.

I think the BrailleNotes is a notice device?

[JAWS-Users] Re: Toggle between normaltext and compressed line on braille display

2007-01-29 Thread Flor Lynch
Hello,
I can't really answer for the "Rapid Reading" checkbox, which (as far as I
know) you would check with spacebar. there may be other parameters necessary
to be changed in that dialogue for it to work, as well. For the Toggle 8
pixels per space, if you press ctrl+a you should be asked to assign a hot key?
You then choose some braille keys. [On the BrailleNote, by default it is dots
2356.]

Yes, I am using the PAC Mate with 40 cells from Freedom Scientific. At the
same time I have found the function. The name is "BrailleToggle8PixelsPerSpace".
Well, but how I can to assign a key from my braille display?

In the Advanced Braille Options... dialogue I cannot to choice the "Rapid
Reading" checkbox. Dows my braille display is not support this?

  Thx, Demetry

[JAWS-Users] Re: Toggle between normaltext and compressed line on braille display

2007-01-28 Thread Flor Lynch
I believe you have in mind the 'rapid reading' checkbox, outlined below. Can
you give an example of what you want to do, and tell us your model of braille
display? Do you have a Freedom Scientific braille display such as one of the
pac Mate or Focus types? For them, there is a 'rapid reading' checkbox, which
has the effect of shortening the display length to 20 cells. It can be checked
to enable this, in the Configuration manager, Set Options, Braille Options,
Advanced Options... dialogue. My own braille display, a brailleNote with 32
cells, not a Freedom Scientific product, unfortunately does not get the benefit
of this. Users of braille displays manufactured by Freedom Scientific (if
there are some here) may want to make further observations.

  Hi list,

Does anyone knows, how is named this function? With some braille displays is
  that already to define.

  Thanks for you assistance.
