Recently I've been hearing a strange noise. I've installed the latest FW
2.46 but I'm not sure when this started.
It's only audible from an external speaker and cannot be heard through the
front headphone jack.
The noise is a random, pulsating tone of about 360Hz and sounds a bit like
RTTY but o

1. Why would one use a balun when both the antenna and coax are unbalanced?
Wouldn't a unun be appropriate?
2. What are the swrs at the balun? The swr at the K3 doesn't tell us much
since the length of the coax affects it greatly.

None of those things helps. I can reduce my LINE OUT gain to 1 and still see
the 3rd harmonic easily on the waterfall. I've had many rigs and this is the
first to do this.
There was a thread about this not long ago. Do a nabble search on "ghost".
There is also some distortion in the speaker

Check your RX EQ and make sure it's not got some gain cranked on any freq.

Normally a computer mic. has a condenser element and requires DC bias via
the mic. jack. Don't use a mono adapter. Set your menu for rPH bias. The
'mono' label is tricky. I think it means that the mic. audio is mono but not

With my antenna input grounded, the S meter reads 0. With the ATT on, the S
meter reads S3 with some random movement. Yes it is strange. I should never

There is an impedance mismatch between the Elecraft Hex Key and the K3
causing it to produce a ghost signal on harmonically related bands. I
believe this is a firmware bug in the paddle and am asking Elecraft to look

ends. Yaesu had several ways of configuring their 8 pin mic jack. I read
When using ESSB, any bandwidth, on 40 meters, LSB output power drops about
50% compared to USB. Turning off ESSB gives 100% power in either mode.
I reloaded the latest firmware, 2.23, no change.
20 meters is 100% output on either sideband.
Suggestions?

Using a set of computer speakers which have their own gain control allows
you to adjust the overall AF gain, including the sidetone then use the AF
gain control on the K3 to adjust for band noise. That's how I avoid having
to fiddle with the sidetone level.

I use a reel with 6 lb line and a wrist rocket from Walmart with a lead
fishing weight. Lay the reel on the ground and shoot the weight over the top
of the tree. I try to avoid large limbs. You want the line over the soft

I just completed a cw qso on 80m. Static is running 10 - 20 db over S9
tonight. There is nearly 1000 miles between us and the other station was
using a magnetic loop antenna for transmitting made from 18ft. of copper
pipe, 3ft. above the ground.

The "Terminal" feature on the utility would make a nice CW keyboard but
isn't there some way to keep it in transmit mode while I'm typing? As it is
now, it appears that one must first type some text then select "transmit"

allows you to totally control your rig via your PC and it cost $65 up front

I'm trying to configure Mixw macros so it will send commands to select
various filters, FL2 etc
The "Programmer's Reference isn't much help to me. I was able to interpet
the commands for my IC-7800 easily but this has me stumped. Can someone help
me get started by telling me the command form

shift fits perfectly within the passband.

Confusion still reins about the front panel mic. jack. The manual says pin 6
has 8v. This post says "5v when BIAS is on". So I measured it.
Front Panel Mic. Jack:
Pin 2 (PTT) has 5V no matter if BIAS is on or off.
Pin 6 has 8 V always on.

Sometimes one of the front panel connector pins don't line up and that
breaks the mic connection. If you have a computer mic hand, plug it into the
rear panel, change the menu and see if that works. That would be rP.L
Bias...in the menu. This will narrow down the problem.
