On my 15.10 system, the kernel is 4.2.something.
To get a newer kernel while staying with 14.04, download, boot, and then
do a fresh install of the latest 14.04.# (currently 14.04.3) install
image at http://xubuntu.org/getxubuntu/#lts. Or, follow the in
uncher: the program to start, name and so on.

And, FWIW, I don't like to disable my track-pad when typing. I find that
the main problem are the settings for double and triple clicking on the
track-pad rather than its sensitivity when typing. So, I have al
ackets transmitted, 4 received, 0% packet loss, time 3004ms
rtt min/avg/max/mdev = 4.358/4.865/6.385/0.880 ms

Or, are you talking about menu options with a live install? If a live
install, it is generally safe to hard rest a computer (usually, hold the
power for 10+ seconds).
