Re: My Google Home Max adventures

You could be right about that, but also consider that Alexa has been around at least a year longer than Google Home, I'm sure that there was a time when there weren't many games on the Alexa platform either. For me though, I don't miss the games as there was only two that I played on Alexa and I wasn't into those two games all that much as I played them only on occasion. If Google Home is focused on streaming, that's fine by me because 90% of what I did with Alexa was streaming services.

I am aware of Book Share filtering capabilities, unfortunately, the Victor Reader doesn't support it, nor does it support reporting the quality of books, and finaly it doesn't support Book Share's reading list or whatever they call the list where you put books you want to read.In those respects, the Victor Reader's Book Share support pales in comparison to its BARD support.

One of the reasons I prefer BARD to Book Share is that Book Share seems to accept anything. I once got a book from them that was so poorly done that at every page change, you lost several lines of the text to the OCR getting all screwed up on the page break, and it took those several lines to get itself sorted out.

Ah! That makes sense, though doesn't BARD also have books in Braille? Or are they not in BRF format?I've only been blind for the last five years, and with all this technology I don't see Braille as a necessity. Now if I had lost my vision 30 or more years ago, that would be a different story altogether.

Actually, the only security measure I've seen BARD use, besides enforcing fairly strong passwords is to force you to change your password, but I've seen them do that only once in the almost five years I've been using tham. And, for what it's worth, I prefer BARD's audio recordings of a real person reading the book over Book Share's having a TTS voice do it. But I will use Book Share for books that BARD doesn't have because a TTS voice reading a book is better than no book to listen to.

Re: PayByChip marketplace

If you've seen my other thread about learning and exploring the Google Home assistant, you know that I bought a Google Home Max. Unfortunately, it proved to have a problem with the Voice Match feature in that it would not accept the training data for a Voice Match profile. Not sure if this was due to a hardware fault or a software glitch, I decided to send it back for an exchange, figuring that if the new one had the same Voice Match problem, then it was more than likely a software glitch that Google will have to fix in a future update.Anyway, I bought the Max from BestBuy through the PayByChip marketplace, it was actually my first order through the marketplace, so I contacted them using the help section of themarketplace software. They have been very responsive and helpful in arranging with Best Buy  to get me a return authorization for an exchange for a new Max. I am very pleased with them. Their customer service compares very favorably against Amazon's which has frequently disappointed me with flowery, canned responses that did nothing to resolve my issues.

Well, other than having to undress in front of a woman, then lay down and moon her, that was a whole lot of nothing to write home about. The only thing I could *really* feel is when they inserted the ultrasound probe. I had to focus to feel the anesthetic needles, and all I could sense fromthe biopsy gun was the pop it makes when it takes a sample. They took 12 samples. In a week, I go back to learn the result, so I get to live a week in suspense!

This is an argument you can't win. If the site didn't enforce strong password creation, and somebody's account gets hacked, the site will be blamed for not enforcing strong passwords, the user won't get any blame for creating weak ones. So site owners are damned if they do, and damned if they don't, so they err on the side of caution and enforce strong passwords.

Re: My Google Home Max adventures

Well, I have hit my first stumbling block that makes me glad I decided to hold on to the Echo until I was sure I was keeping the Google Home Max.We just had a hour long power outage, and when power came back on and I plugged the Max back in, it had lost all of it's setup information. That's crazy! The Echo always remembered its set up information even after being unplugged for a day.So I grabbed my phone and tried to go through the set up again, but when it came time to reconnect to my WiFi, it couldn't connect. The only thing it does is it keeps repeating that it can't connect to WiFi, yada yada yada. I tried my Trek and checked my phone and both had no problem connecting to the WiFi.So, I switched the phone's Bluetooth off and connected to the Max via WiFi, still the exact same behavior. It seems to me the phone can't connect to the Max because after a wait of several minutes it times out and asks if I want to try again. I've tried via both Bluetooth and WiFi numerous times with no luck.A couple of days ago I wanted to retrain Voice Match and ran into the same thing, after saying the training phrases, the Google Home app would attempt to connect to the Max to retrain it, but after several minutes, it would time out with no success. So it seems to me that once initial set up is complete, you can't redo any part of it if needed. Again, that's crazy! If I needed or wanted to re set up the Echo, no problem! So now I have a $400 brick! If I can't find a way to resolve this, it's going back to where it came from for a refund, and I'm going back to the Echo, it at least works.

I've heard that the Trek runs on Android where the Stream didn't. With that in mind the Trek could be all new hardware rather than just a Stream with GPS added to it, and a new design provides an opportunity for design flaws to creep in. Just a theory to explain how a design that worked became a design that has issues, and trying to decide whether to stick it out or to sell the Trek, and go back to using a Stream. Especially since I don't need the GPS anywhere near as much as I thought I did.

Re: My Google Home Max adventures

My response about the Trek GPS is in the Victor Reader Stream's big brother thread. The devil is in the details. Something else I've noticed, though is probably more of a problem with Amazon music than with the Echo or Alexa. Often when playing a playlist or a station from Amazon music, I'd have to adjust the volume because the tracks being played vary in their volume level. The previous track played was fine at volume 4, but the current track is too loud requiring that I change the volume level to 3, then the next track is too quiet, requiring me to raise the volume level back up to 4, really annoying. That annoyance doesn't seem to occur at all with Google play music. I can simply set the volume where I want it and it's fine all day long. One thing I've considered about the various music services, it's kind of like email, before I discovered the convenience of never having to go through changing email addresses by using an email service that is independent of the internet service provider, every time my internet provider changed, I'd get a new email address, and just like moving, would have to tell everyone my new email address, what a pain. Using a music service tied to Amazon or Google could be the same, if I change assistants, I'll have to re set up the music service all over again, but if I sign up with an independent music service like Pandora or Spotify, then, just like an independent email service, as long as the new assistant supports the music service, I'm good to go.

Re: Victor Reader Stream gets a new big brother

Thanks, Jack! I had forgotten this thread from when I first heard about the Trek. Seems like ages ago.I actually haven't done all that much with the GPS as I'm not all that confident in my mobility skills, so I tend to limit going on foot to just those places that are within a block of home, and don't really need a GPS for getting there. One time I tried it was while in a car going to my folks house for a visit, after putting on headphones, and switching to orientation mode and switching on the GPS, and putting it on the dash so it had nothing but the wind shield above it, it couldn't acquire a signal.I've also tried it just to learn how to use it while walking to the grocery store, it got a signal but had a hard time keeping it. I eventually gave up and switched it off.I don't know whether I have a defective unit, or it just needs some software bugs fixed, I tried reaching out to humanware but got less than reasonable support. The impression I got was they didn't want to hear about a possible warranty repair or replacement.

Although we are getting a little off track here, I will say that I am rather disappointed in the Trek in several areas, I'm hoping its just kinks in a new system that need working out, but considering all the success they've had with the Victor Reader Stream, I tend to have doubts.I've noticed that if you leave the Trek on for an extended period of time, such as over night when I forget to turn it off before going to bed, the speech synthesizer quits working and it takes a 30 second power cycle to get the voice working again, this never happened with the Stream. I've also noticed that conditions have to be nearly perfect, which is rare in the real world, for the GPS system to aquire all of the satellite signals. It doesn't take much to completely block the GPS system from getting the signal that they need. What good is a supposedly first map from TomTom when getting the satellite signals is so iffy?

The amplified speaker I use for theTrek is also a Bluetooth speaker as well as a wired one and the Trek won't pair with it either.I take back what I said in my previous message, if the Trek could pair with just one of these, then I could have it at my computer desk and still play my music library through a decent speaker in the living room.If the dedicated speaker had worked, I wouldn't care about pairing it with the Max. For what it's worth, the dedicated speaker is a Tewel Retro Rock speaker, nice looking from the way it feels, and nice sounding.

Re: My Google Home Max adventures

The Trek did work with the Max through an audio cable, it just wasn't as loud as I'd have thought, raising the Trek's or Max's volume would have fixed it, but I didn't bother. The whole purpose of doing this was to determine whether the 3.5 mm jack was audio in or out.I'm not going to try pairing one to the other through Bluetooth because I'm not interested in using them that way. I already have a dedicated amplified speaker for the Trek, so I don't need the Max to be a speaker for it too.

Re: My Google Home Max adventures

Here it is, confirmation by an actual physical test, no guessing.I connected the headphone jack of my Victor Reader Trek to the Google Home Max's 3.5 mm jack, when I plugged the cord into the jack on the back of the Max, it confirmed the connection with a bleep. Then I turned on the Trek, and lo and behold, I could hear it coming from the Max, though at a very low volume level, which is understandable, because when I have the Max playing music, it is usually at a low, background music, volume level. So, this little test confirms that the 3.5 mm jack is an audio in, not out, jack.

I looked at Google Play Music, Spotify, and Pandora, and since I couldn't see any real difference, even in price, since I already had a Google account because I use GMail, I decided to go with Google Play Music. All three services start you off with a free 30 day trial, so I'm not committed. I found irritation with Google Play Music, when I signed up, it asked me to choose my favorite genres and artists, I decided to give that some thought, and figuring that I could always come back to it later, skipped it, only to find out later that there seems to be no way back to those settings.I found it, on a web page with an article about Google Play Music tips & tricks, was a link that allows you to repeat those set up questions about your favorite genres and artists. Fortunately the speaker does have a 3.5 mm audio in jack, so that's what I'm using now, but I'd like to be able to use Bluetooth so I'm not chained down. I wonder what Humanware is doing that causes the Trek not to connect to Bluetooth devices like most other Bluetooth devices will?I looked online for the offers, and found them, but the free year of Google Play Music wasn't listed, a year of Youtube Red was though, whatever that is.Well, I guess I'm lucky I don't want to hook up another speaker to the Max, that's just ridiculous, I imagine that will turn off most people to the idea as well, so in the end, Google looses out.

Re: PayByChip marketplace

Take this for what it's worth, because I don't remember where I heard or read it.The marketplace wanted to just use the RFI chip reader built into most smart phones so that their users wouldn't have to carry a chip reader around with them when using the mobile version of the marketplace app. But Apple was refusing to allow any developers outside their company to use that device. They claimed that it was to keep Apple Pay secure. So the marketplace started developing a wireless chip reader since it would be needed by iPhone users.Apparently somebody proved to Apple that Apple Pay security wouldn't be compromised by allowing third parties to develop apps that used the RFI device, so Apple relented and is now allowing the marketplace and other developers to use it. So the wireless chip reader may no longer be entirely necessary, but by now the marketplace has invested enough into its development that they aren't going to stop now.Anyway, there it is, I don't know where I got it so I can't say how credible it is.

@JeffLOL! That post was so ridiculous that I couldn't believe the non sense. Have you done any research on these chip readers? Do you even know what you are talking about? If you live in the US, ggo into any grocery store you like, and at every register is a terminal for customers to use their debit or credit cards. Every one of those terminals has the same chip reader this marketplace uses in it.Do you have a dog or know someone who does. Did you have a chip implanted in it so it could be identified if its tags are missing? That is the very same RFI technology.Do you have a smart phone? Do you know that they also have an RFI chip reader in them, the one in the iPhones is used for Apple Pay.When it's released, the mobile will use these built in chip readers to read the chip on your card when you want to make a purchase. This RFI technology you are railing against isn't new and is in fact everywhere.

I thought that saying "I think" or "I thought" as pitermach did means that you aren't certain. Now that I've had the Max for two days and am using it as a rather expensive radio while I learn more about it's capabilities, pretty much the same way I got started with the Amazon Echo, I've noticed a couple of things, subtly different, but nice, about the Max compared to the Echos. The first is speed, the Max responds to my requests almost instantly while there is always a pause for several seconds for processing before Alexa responds. The second is the response itself, on the Max the response is always bright and cheerful compared to Alexa's rather dry and matter of fact responses. Personally I like the Max's response style better than Alexa's.Apparently the year of free Google Play Music with a purchase of Google Home Max was an introductory promotion that has now expired. No matter, at least I got a free Google Home Mini with the Max.

I just noticed that the CEO of PayByChip has introduced himself in the restricted user thread so he can answer the questions posed here.I don't see that PayByChip being only one person is a bad thing, every company, no matter how large, started somewhere with just one person with an idea. Consider Apple, for instance, Steve Wozniak and Steve Jobs started it in Jobs's garage. Or Microsoft who was started by Bill Gates and a friend, their only product was a BASIC interpreter for the Mits Altair 8800.For Amazon Prime members, Amazon won't allow current Prime member to use their Prime benefits, like two day shipping, on the marketplace, they will however be offering marketplace users the ability to get Prime two day shipping on marketplace orders for $50 per year. It's not available yet, but it is coming. Currently the only thing I'm using Prime for on Amazon is the two day shipping, so, for me, that would be a 50% savings over Amazon's price.Just in case PayByChip doesn't work out, though I think they are off to a great start, I will be maintaining my Amazon account, I will however be deleting my debit card from it and canceling my Prime membership.

Re: My Google Home Max adventures

I am guessing about the 3.5 mm jack on the back, but I've never heard of any version of these assistants that could be used as a speaker for another device, so I assume it's an audio out, but I could be wrong.I do notice that besides the 3.5 mm jack, you can also connect speakers via Bluetooth or chromecast.I am new to this thing and Google documentation isn't exactly the greatest.

I know what you mean about phasing out music libraries. Amazon allows you to upload up to 250 tracks from your music library for the Echo to stream as part of your Prime membership, and for $25 a year you could expand that to 250,000, or some huge number, of tracks, but as of April 30th, they are discontinuing both the free and paid music storage services.Man! Google is missing out on a bet here! If you want full stereo sound from your Home Max, you can pair it with a second speaker to have separate left and right channels. With that in mind you'd think they'd be selling a matching companion speaker for the Max, but so far I've found nothing. If I am going to set up separate left and right channel speakers, I'd want them to be matching for some symmetry.

If the folder you are trying to save to is in the Program Files folder, you can't, it's a protection system within Windows.Alternatively, you can try running Gold Wave or what ever you're trying to save with as an administrator.

[[wow]]! You mean PayPal charges you to make a purchase using your credit card? That's ridiculous! Over here the only people who get charged are the people or company receiving the money in the transaction.I currently have both my bank account and debit card on PayPal, that's only because it's required to sell on eBay and I still do that on occasion, otherwise I'd have deleted both from there years ago and canceled my account with them too, you don't have to have any of that to be able to use PayPal to make purchases. Once I decide I'm done selling on eBay, I will delete everything from there. In other news. For those of you looking at this PayByChip marketplace, who have Amazon Prime, while Amazon won't allow existing Prime members to use their benefits in the marketplace, they will be offering Prime two day shipping on orders placed in the marketplace for $50 per year. Since, at present, two day shipping is the only thing I'm using Prime for, that's a 50% savings over buying Prime directly from Amazon!I'm in!

I agree with you about using PayPal being no more secure than storing your credit or debit card on sites like Amazon and other retail shopping sites, except that if you use PayPal whenever you can, you reduce the number of places you have your bank account or credit or debit card information stored, and that at least has to help, even if only a little, improve security.I myself have been a PayPal user almost from the day they started, I started using them back in 2000 when about the only place that used them was eBay. And, like you, I have never had a problem with them despite all the horror stories floating around about them. Nor will I stop using them just because I'm now using the PayByChip marketplace, there are other sites with products I might want that aren't part of the marketplace, I'll need a way to pay them when I buy something from them.

Oh! I almost forgot! In the box with the Max is a round magnetic rubber pad, this is the Max's foot, you stick this on either the Max's bottom, or right side if you want the Max more vertical than horizontal, then set the Max on it. Being made of rubber has two benefits as I see it, one, the Max won't slide around, and two, the rubber will dampen vibrations preventing them from being transmitted to what ever the Max is sitting on.The music I listen to most is classical, and sometimes I'll listen to easy listening, which is basically popular music that is not aggressive or wild. When I do specifically sit down to just listen to music, what I listen to most are the top 100 hits from the 70s, my growing up years, and the 80s, young adult years. After the 80s, music started changing in a way that I didn't like, so I sort of lost interest and just enjoyed the music I grew up with by listening to oldies stations, though there were some artists, like Elton John, that still produced music I liked, that turned me on to easy listening stations. For music accounts, I'll have to compare them, their features, how much music is available, and cost. Acording to Google, a Google Music account has something like 440,000,000 individual available tracks, that's a lot of music! One thing I'd really like to see is either the ability to plug in something like a micro HD memory card with your music library on it, or an online service where you could upload your library, then connect your assistant to it, then it could use that or the memory card as one of your music accounts.

Old school:First you have to get the information off the card, some of this, such as the CVV, will require sighted assistance, and either memorize or put it in something accessible so it can be refered to later. Then when you are going to make a purchase, you have a choice, you can enter all your card information, number, expiration date, name on card, billing address including city, state, and zip, or whatever your country uses, and finally the CVV security code, then you can either decide to enter that information every time you make a purchase, or store it on the site as hacker bait.Chip reader:When you are ready to make a purchase, you take a few seconds to take your card out of your wallet, if it isn't out already, put it in the chip reader, wait a few seconds for the software to read your card's information, then when the purchase is complete, remove your card from the chip reader and put it back in your wallet or where ever you store it.No typing in all that information is needed, nor is your card's information stored in the cloud as hacker bait.Seems like a no brainer to me. I already use PayPal where ever it's accepted to keep my financial information, like card numbers, out of as many hands as possible. But still have to give it to PayPal, the chip reader removes even that requirement. But the chip reader isn't for everybody, some people like to type and some people don't mind leaving hacker bait all over the place. I can accept that and have no problem with it. Different strokes for different folks. What I can't and won't accept is when somebody like ironcross32 comes on here and posts derogatory comments like calling the chip reader dumb. Because I like and use it, and support it, calling it dumb is no different from calling me dumb. And there is no need, or call for those kinds of remarks. First of all after reviewing my opening message, I found an error and fixed it, it was, that connecting to your online Google account is the step that most of Google Home's features depend on, not Voice Match as I had indicated.I also found the purpose for the USB and 3.5 mm audio connectors and added them. As someone else has noted, the USB connector is so you can connect a USB to Ethernet adaptor, and the audio jack is so you can add a second speaker to get full stereo sound.Unfortunately, those free accounts were apparently promotions that are now over as there was no information about them included, nor did the Max automatically connect to them as it did the free Google Music account. Oh well, at least I got a free Google Home Mini.sirpdex, LOL! my Max heard your message with the Hey Google in it and sang some humorous version of happy birthday.I've heard a lot about Spotify and Pandora. I don't know much about either one, but I may have to learn because if I decide to pay for a music account, I'll want to compare them to Google Music, before I buy in Google Music, it might turn out that one of the other two is a better fit for me.

My Google Home Max adventures

2018-04-03 Thread AudioGames . net ForumOff-topic room : Orko via Audiogames-reflector

My Google Home Max adventures

As noted in another thread, I have pretty much given up on Alexa and the Amazon Echo. The Echo hardware was fine, it looked good, had good sound, and worked well, but the Alexa service had many problems that weren't being fixed, and had terrible voice recognition or interpretation. So,, since I had heard a lot of good reviews of it, I decided to switch to the Google Home assistant, only I decided to go whole hog and get the Google Home Max. The offer of a free Google Home Mini helped me make that decision, it can go in the bedroom.Anyway, it arrived today in a rather big box, Best Buy did a good job packing it so that it would arrive undamaged. The box for the Max was big compared to the box the Echo came in, but then the Max is kind of big itself, and heavy. The Max basically looks like a speaker, it's not round like the Echos or the Google Home, it's basically a box 13.5 inches wide, 7.5 inches tall, 6.5 inches deep, and weighs about 13 pounds. For power it has just a simple power cord, not an adaptor like the Echo used. For controls, I called Aira and they helped me explore all the controls and connections. First off, there are no controls in front or on the sides. The only control on top is a silver bar. The center of the bar is a play/stop button. There is actually no physical button, the bar is touch sensitive, and the center area is the paly/stop. To lower the volume, you just slide your finger on the bar from right to left, to raise the volume, slide your finger left to right. On the back, there are only two controls, a tiny little reset button that is so stiff, you have to push it with a finger nail, and a switch, not a button, to turn off the microphone. The nice thing about the switch versus a button is, that by its position you know whether the microphone is off or on. For connections, it has three, one if for the power cord, another is a USB-C connector, and the third is a 3.5 mm stereo audio jack. I don't know yet what the USB connector is for, or whether the hack is for audio in or out.Set up itself was pretty easy. Just put it on top of the bookshelf in the living room and plug it in. In about a minute, just like the Echo, it announced itself. Next I downloaded the Google Home app to my iPhone and proceeded with initial set up, which was very similar to the Echo's initial set up except that the Google Home app was fully accessible with Voice Over with none of the accessibility problems the Amazon Alexa app had, so going through all the steps was a sinch. For this initial run through I just did the basic set up of connecting it to my WiFi and entering my address so it would have its location for things like weather. I also went ahead and went through the Voice Match set up. Voice Match allows Google Home to create a profile of each person in your house, which it identifies using their voice, this allows it to learn about them so it can be more useful to them. I'm not yet sure how I feel about this obvious data gathering, but you are warned that most of Google Home's features depend on the feature if you try to skip it. Whether skipping it would affect the assistants usefulness, I don't know, but since I've come to like the idea of voice activated assistants, I decided not to risk loosing features by skipping the Voice Match set up.At this point I decided to do any additional set up over time as needed and start using it. Even though I've done very little with it, I already like it better than the Echo. To get the Echo to stream a radio station, you have to tell it to play something from Tune In, like this, "Alexa, play WSMR from Tune In", But with Google Home all you do is say, "Hey Google, play WSMR", and off you go.When you asked the Echo to play a radio station, it searched Tune In's entire worldwide database, so if it misunderstood you, which happens often enough, heaven only knows where the radio station you'll get is from. But with Google Home, if you don't give a location, it restricts it's search to your local radio stations, so I could have said, "Hey Google, play 89.1", I would have gotten WSMR, because it does a worldwide search, you simply can't play radio stations by frequency with an Echo. If I wanted to listen to a radio station somewhere else, "Hey Google, play 105.9 in Chicago" and it would play the FM simulcast of WBBM 780 news radio out of Chicago. All without ever telling it to play from Tune In.I haven't explored it yet to see what's available, but Google Home automatically links to a free Google Music account, so I could stream music from that. I'll have to see if I can find out how many songs are included in the free account versus a paid account and how many songs are in the paid account, and what a paid account costs. I frequently liked to tell the Echo to play music from one artist or another and I'm hoping the Google and the free Google Music account can do the same, if not, I may consider a paid account if it doesn't cost too

@ DarkThe chip reader does nothing to your card, you can still use it anywhere that accepts them, all it does is read the card's information for you so you don't have to type it in when you are making a purchase. There is nothing at all to stop you from using the same card you used in the chip reader to order pizza or to order something from another web site that doesn't use the chip reader.Considering that the chip reader uses standard Microsoft Smart Card drivers, I see no reason why it couldn't be made usable for more than just this marketplace, all it would take is somebody to write the software to read the chip, then paste the data into the appropriate fields in the form in your browser, half the software already exists in software like RoboForm.I'm sorry about the remark that seemed to say that people who had been blind all their life didn't understand visual ideas, that wasn't what I meant or tried to imply. All the credit and debit cards I've ever seen seemed to be intentionally designed to thwart attempts to OCR them. Maybe the companies you do business with don't go to such lengths, I don't know. All I was trying to say is that if all you are going by is the way the card feels, that there is a lot more going on visually than the way the card feels would lead you to believe.

I would really like to hear an honest report from these people telling us to OCR our cards after they've tried to do just that with a card they no nothing about.I suspect these people have been blind most of, if not all of, their lives and have never actually seen a credit or debit card, because if they had, they'd know that it can't be done.On top of that, the argument about using a proprietary system makes no sense, Amazon is proprietary to them, Walmart is proprietary to them, you use a proprietary screen reader on a proprietary operating system, yet I don't hear you complaining about that.I'd hardly call a chip reader proprietary, terminals that read the chip in your card instead of you having to swipe the card are everywhere. Envision America's Script Talk talking prescription labels uses the same RFI technology, and so does some denominations of US currency.Proprietary my butt! That's just a meaningless argument that makes no sense.

I have absolutely no problem that ironcross32 doesn't like the idea of needing his physical card to put into a reader to make an online purchase, none at all, different strokes for different folks. I draw the line, however, when he decides to be disrespectful by calling it and its proponents dumb or any other derogatory name he chooses, there's no need or call for that kind of behavior. If he doesn't like being compared to a small child, then he shouldn't call something I like, and me by extension, dumb or whatever name he likes.

@ironcross32OK, I challenge you to take a credit or debit card you've never seen before and OCR it and get the card number, the expiration date, and (LOL) the CVV or security code off of it accurately. You won't be able to get the card number or expiration date because most card these days aren't a plain color, instead they have some kind of pattern or texture in their colors that will screw up OCR every time. And forget the CVV code, it's printed with translucent ink using a font with lines so fat they almost run together on a paper strip covered with text. OCR is completely useless here.Your argument about doing this is so completely laughable that it makes you look like you are grasping at straws to make a point because you are out of legitimate arguments.LOLLOLLOLLOL!

Have you people trashing this card reader considered that one of the advantages of the chip reader is that it frees the visually impaired from having to read the card number or worse the CVV or security code on the back of their card?I've used it several times already and do not find it an inconvenience at all to have to get my card to make a purchase, even though I've memorized all the information on my card, so I could just as easily type it in.I don't understand this trashing something you haven't even tried, just like a small child that won't eat their vegetables, I think it's stupid.

Re: Bye, bye, Alexa

The two main problems I have with Amazon is unlabeled buttons that they've been told about years ago that they simply don't fix.The other problems I've encountered is lines of controls coded in a way that prevents screen readers from being able to separate out the individual controls, so you can't manipulate them, For example, when returning an item, you have to select from the list of things you've ordered recently, the items you want to return by checking a checkbox. The problem is the way the product lines are coded, screen readers don't see the checkbox as a separate control so you can't check it, except with a mouse. And then on some pages, you can click on buttons but they don't do anything, but when you click on them with a mouse, they work.Even worse, the supposedly screen reader optimized web site has the same accessibility problems! The only thing optimized on that site is the number of links, there are a lot fewer of them, and functionality, it's functionality is very limited.

Re: Bye, bye, Alexa

Draq, That's just silly when you are in a store, you have to pull out your card to every time you make a purchase, do you complain about that too? How is this any different?I personally like the security of knowing that the only time the marketplace and software have access to my card's information is when it's inserted. This means I can browse to my heart's content without worrying about accidently ordering something, it's simply not possible without your card in the reader. And if you have a spare USB port, as I do, there's no need to unplug the reader.I had to laugh! When I went into the Alexa companion app to deregister my Echo, I noticed that Amazon or Alexa added a new feature you can optionally turn on or leave off called conversation mode. This is where if you are talking back and forth to Alexa, you don't have to say Alexa in front of every thing you say to it. The funny part is that Google Home has had this feature from day one.

I decided to go whole hog and bought a Google Home Max and am getting a Mini as a free bundle with the Max. The Max will go in my living room and the Mini in my bedroom. I have no plans to use either for making calls, I'll use them as I did the Echo as assistants and to stream music and to play games, if any are available. And for what it's worth, of the two colors available, chalk and charcoal, otherwise known as black and white, I chose charcoal or black.Oh yeah, that's another gripe I forgot about Alexa, their servers seem to go down at least once a month and when they go down, you may as well unplug the Echo for the rest of the day.Amazon has a buy back program, if they are offering to buy the Echo, that's where mine will be going. And Jack guessed it, the marketplace I was talking about is the PayWithChip marketplace. The primary reason I didn't mention the name was because it is currently only available in the states, though the CEO, whom I've had many interesting conversations with, says they'd like to be able to offer the marketplace to other regions, with your location determining what stores are available to you.

On kind of a side note, I am actually preparing to abandon Amazon in favor of a new marketplace designed specifically for the VIP community. Amazon is one of the 40 stores they currently have in the marketplace and they are adding more stores all the time. The one downside is that if you are a Prime member, Amazon won't let you use your Prime benefits through the marketplace, so I am canceling my Prime membership. I'll agree that free two day shipping is nice, but it's not essential, what is, is a shopping experience that is blind user friendly, and that is something that Amazon is not, despite their claims of how important accessibility is to them. Like some other companies I could name but won't, Amazon is using accessibility as nothing but a marketing strategy, all Amazon cares about is selling you stuff.
