Re: The Windows 10 New World Order

Precisely, though in fairness not everyone has the time to constantly tweak and maintain. There should be a balance between intuitiveness and practicallity, and frankly if a person can't wrap their head around the concept of an executable file or have at least a basic understanding of what the Internet they use and take for granted every day is, they should not be using computers. Life would be so, so much better.

Re: The Windows 10 New World Order

I agree with everything said here about Windows; it's bloated, messy and a pain in the ass to get configured. That being said, I used to have 8.1 and 10 running on an old single-core 1.86 x86 laptop, 1.5 gb of RAM (no paging file) and a slow 80 GB SATA HD. It was sluggish at times, especially in Skype, but for the most part ran fine. I had NVDA and ClassicShell and would take it over XP on that machine any day. Battery life was pretty good too. I'm not trying to praise Windows and I hate Microsoft, this has just been my experience. Linux desktop accessibility has a long, long way to go, and the latest version of Eloquence is not supported, so I guess I just have no motivation to change. Besides even if I didn't disable (so I hope) everything related to telemetry, there are billions of Windows devices, many of them doing illegal things; I highly doubt my data is so important as to be scrutinized. Though if it is, I might end up introducing some random MS employee to
some kickass music, so that's cool I guess. If I really need to do something anonymously I'll use a Linux live system and Tor, problem sort of solved.

Re: The Windows 10 New World Order

I actually understand why newer processors won't be supported on earlier versions; MS is trying to avoid what happened with XP. There's already a huge and ridiculously complex infrastructure in Windows for maintaining compatibility with older applications, especially 32-bit apps running on 64-bit Windows. If Microsoft had just given a more reasonable end-of-support timeline for 32-bit programs on x64 editions and then stated they wouldn't be guaranteed to work, we might not have as much of a problem now. People are lazy and won't support something new unless they absolutely must. Trying to keep things compatible with a 7-year-old OS (XP with latest service pack or 7, whatever) is just ridiculous. I only wish MS had learned this before now.

Re: Windows 7 and 8 Now Getting The Spyware Treatment

I'd say I have about the same amount of control I did on 8.1, so not really a loss there. I can't pick and choose which updates are downloaded by default, but I never really did that on earlier versions anyway except for the 8.1 telemetry update, which is kind of irrelevant now.@Superb, if you don't have Group Policy you're probably out of luck. There's a registry value under HKEYLocalMachine\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Data Collection called Allow Telemetry which you can set to zero, but I'm not sure how effective it is. Disable the "Connected user experience and telemetry" service and all tasks under Customer Experience Improvement Program in Task Scheduler. Also disable the SIH and SIHBOOT tasks under windows update. Microsoft generally allows enterprise users greater control, which is why I use the enterprise evaluation version as oposed to a home or pro copy. Hope that helps.

Re: Windows 7 and 8 Now Getting The Spyware Treatment

I think I said this previously in this thread, but what pisses me off even more than the privacy violations is how MS is so presumptuous as to have things set to run in the background and automatically upload data by default, wasting CPU time and adding unneeded complexity. My computer works for me, not Microsoft, and this is what they seem to be forgetting. That being said I find later Windows versions, on capable hardware, to actually be snappier than XP, plus the archetecture of that OS is really ineficient when it comes to updates and modular design. Of course that pretty much goes for all Windows versions, so I digress. It's really not feasible to run XP on newer hardware though because of things like UEFI, SATA, SSDs and the fact that drivers are no longer being made for it.

Yeah I gave up and am on 10, surprisingly it's actually not that bad. I disabled syncing and everything (services, tasks, registry values) that has to do with telemetry, and only start the Windows Update service when I actually want to update. It seems a little snappier than 7 or 8.1 and has some nice changes like the improved settings screen (though the fact that some settings are there and some are in control panel is pretty ridiculous), virtual desktops and time estimation for the battery to be fully charged, and Cortana can be nice if you want to do something like quickly convert currency or check the weather, though I have it disabled on most of my devices. Just use ClassicShell and uninstall the stupid preloaded apps with CCleaner and it's tolerable.

I don't understand why whether or not animals intentionally kill themselves is relevant. I think condemning people for thinking of suicide and telling them they'd be selfish to do it is not only wrong, it displays a disgusting lack of understanding and empathy for what they're going through. As someone who has very nearly gone through with it twice, I can say from experience that being in that place is absolute hell, and would not wish it on anyone. It's really something that has to be experienced before it is truly understood, and it angers me to no end how people can so casually blow suicidal individuals off as selfish or cowardly. Sure, some people will make suicidal gestures to get attention, but in those cases they don't actually intend to die, so I consider it a different issue. Sorry for the rant, I'll shut up now.

Are these people disgusting and selfish because they can see no other way out and wish to end their pain? Plus, telling a depressed person who is probably suffering greatly already that their perceived option for escape would make them a terrible person would most likely make their emotional situation even worse.

I will ask, however, what do you say to women (or men, though I get the feeling you're putting the responsibility of caring for children mostly on women) who have no desire to marry or have children? What if a person wants to remain independent, and not conform to a role society has made for them? Btw Wikipedia is not a reliable source itself, but most articles specifically site primary references from which the article was written; just look at those if in doubt.

Re: Where do you get your music?

Rockbox was never intended for blind people; voicing was introduced as a feature because it was wanted by users and developers, so that you don't have to take the player out of pocket to look at it. About the label recording, that can be done with the Rockbox Utility program, no fuss. It scans folders you select automatically and generates the samples, which only take about 1 KB each. I personally don't use them much, but they're not hard to make. The only real downside is that you then have a .talk file with the exact same name for every file generated. @Turtle, there should be a Database option after Files, which will automatically organize everything by ID3 tags so you can search by artist, album etc.I have a 128GB micro-SD card in my Clip which is pretty cool. The only thing to remember, should anybody decide to get one is that Rockbox only supports FAT32, and Windows won't format a drive bigger than 32GB with it. You'll have to use Linux to form
at it, but you should only need to do it once.I don't usually bother with playlists either, I just go by album. There are two albums in particularly that have some of my favorite songs of all time, with the rest of the material being nothing I care for, so that can get kind of annoying, but since they're both albums of the same band I've just created an unofficial album folder with the songs in numbered order.I really don't like those sights that try to pass off Rockboxed players as being made for the blind, and selling them for what was, before production stopped and prices went way up, about twice the price of a normal one. It's literally a 5-10 minute job to get Rockbox installed and configured.

Having all your filenames spelled out in Rockbox is a bit annoying, but I can live with it, and whatever you put on the player is exactly what you see. No automatic categorization, just a folder structure.

I will say that while in high school (from which I just graduated last June) all, and I do mean all, of the Mexican girls I met treated me differently. Can't really explain it specifically, just got the impression they were very 'tip-toey' around me, with some just trying to avoid me altogether. The one or two times I was talking to one and made a joke, they didn't seem to get it and became very awkward and quiet. Not sure if it was a language/cultural thing, but all were very good in English and might even have been born in the US, so I find that unlikely. That being said, 99% of people seem to just become exponentially stupider when in the presence of a blind person, so yeah. I'm becoming more and more cynical about ever forming a romantic relationship because of this attitude except possibly with someone who is blind, and since I don't associate much with blind people outside of this forum because of the attitudes many seem to have, I'm not go

I don't have much to say that hasn't been said already, except that with regards to the affect suicide would have on others, I think it could be argued that's the case with any decision in life, so just by being born a being with free will who has interactions with other such beings that point isn't so clear; any action, whether good or bad, is usually going to affect people in some way if it's on the scale of normal human interaction. I'm also dealing with hearing loss, and I've come to peace with the decision that once my hearing reaches a point where I can no longer use it with practicality, I'm done. That simple. I hit a pretty low point a couple months ago, lower than I've ever been, and honestly thought I was going to do it, the only things preventing me being some much-needed travel and the words of some Internet strangers. I dealt with thoughts of the effect my loss would have on family and friends, and ultimately came to terms
with it. That may be selfish, but IMO there comes a point when an individual must decide what's best for them self with matters such as these.

Re: Changing Talkback volume with volume buttons?

That's really annoying, if I'm in a noisy environment I don't want to have to try and navigate to speech settings possibly not being able to hear it, and if the volume is too high there's going to be loud speech until I can turn it down. Plus speed; it doesn't take very long to get to settings, but it's much quicker to just press the buttons. This is honestly a huge turn-off of Android for me.

Re: Windows 7 and 8 Now Getting The Spyware Treatment

Unfortunately, it's not always as simple as "just get Linux." Hardware support and accessibility are steadily improving, but they're not up to par with Windows or OS X. If you're on a laptop, battery life is usually also a pretty big issue, and most people have neither the time nor the inclination for the screwing around required to get even the most user-friendly of distros to work. Also, good luck if you want anything but either an old version of Eloquence, Espeak or Festival (with a lot of tweaking.) Personally, trivial as it sounds, I just find the latest version of Eloquence that can be used on Windows pleasant to listen to, much more so than anything else I've tried including OS X Alex. I'm not bashing Linux at all, just stating some things you have to consider. I'm starting college in a few days, and I want what's most convenient for me with a minimum amount of hassle, and that, for now, means Windows )after everything is set up,
of course.)A friend has Cortana working and showed it to me, and I actually quite like it, it's a shame it comes with so many privacy implications. I think I have to back a little on my previous statement; Windows 8.1 has hundreds of updates and there will only continue to be more, and it's just ridiculous, so for future reinstalls I think I'm going to have to go with 10. Hopefully Microsoft gets slapped in the face by some court, but I'm not holding my breath. Task Scheduler and group policy editor here I come...

Re: Windows 7 and 8 Now Getting The Spyware Treatment

Well, I've officially lost all respect for Microsoft. This is a slap in the face to the user. They're essentially saying "you're an idiot and can't think for yourself, so we're going to decide what's best for you and you're computer, and by "best, we mean an easy data mine for us. Hopefully you won't notice, but if you do, well, LOOK AT THE PRETTY! Don't mind the slowdowns, interruptions of your work and you're CPU time being wasted with our data collection; they're all benefits of the upgrade!"The answer to the question of whether or not you want Windows 10 is simple: yes or no. If yes, Microsoft has made it extremely easy to upgrade. No, on the other hand, strange as it sounds, means...no. I'm not quite sure how a company who claims to be as innovative as MS fails to understand this. I think the only reason they're getting away with this is because most folks want to use their computers to do a
ctual work, and have learned over time to put up with the myriad inconveniences of Windows, inconveniences which in reality are absolutely unacceptable on modern hardware. Truly disgusting. Sorry for the rant.

Also Win10 still has some new processes running that I can't find any way to disable short of actually deleting the files, and it just seems a bit slower than 8.1. Personally, I'm not too concerned about the data going out, since there are millions of computers running Windows and it's highly unlikely mine would be noteworthy enough to be read by an individual. The thing that gets me more than that is that my computer is *my* computer. I want it to do what I tell it, no more and no less, and that definitely does not include wasting CPU time and network bandwidth to upload this diagnostic data. My computer works for me, not Microsoft. I should not, as a consumer, have to assume that my OS is doing things with my computer's resources that do not benefit me or what I'm doing, but with Windows I do. Anyway, the good thing about these updates on earlier versions of Windows is that you can disable the diagnostics tracking service, and telemetry points in consent.exe don't really matter if you're not opted into the Customer Experience Improvement Program; practically every other component on the system has them anyway.
I've disabled all services and tasks related to CEIP, so I guess I've done all I can. On Windows 10 it's just too much hastle to turn it all off.

2015-08-20 Thread AudioGames . net ForumOff-topic room : wanderer via Audiogames-reflector

Re: comparing chromevox with other screen readers like NVDA

Not really related to Chromevox itself, but I personally hate the Google TTS voice. Speech-dispatcher support is still(!) broken in Chromium under Linux, and there didnt seem to be a way to change the voice at all on my Chromebook. Espeak would have been much better, and Im surprised Google doesnt offer that as an option. Also it just seemed to me to be less efficient than something like Orca or NVDA on Windows. I dont want to define the direction Im going with every quick navigation key even if it only takes the press of one extra key each time, Id rather just use shift as a modifier to go in reverse. Similarly navigation was a pain; if I wanted to navigate by character or word, Id have to adjust the granularity and then set it back to continue reading normally, a real pain if youre looking for something specific or having to check spellings frequently. Yeah, you can customize keyboard shortcuts, but with practically eve
ry conceivable key combination assigned to something it didnt seem worth the trouble. I recall it being glitchy on Chrome OS and sometimes failing to read things like the time or date when the keystroke was pressed, and it just seemed a bit sluggish overall. Also way, way too much verbiage and no obvious way to tone it down. The earcons were cute and I really tried to get into them, but they seemed more superfluous than actually useful. I like the unobtrusive beep System Access uses for links, and I think all sound schemes for screen readers should follow that example, rather than playing a loud sound and announcing the element at the same time as the default behavior. In short, I want to interact quickly and efficiently with the web page, not the screen reader, and while having the page loaded in a virtual buffer might seem to contradict that statement, I think theres a reason so many people like the navigation scheme used by NVDA, Orca and JAWS (ugh): Inste
ad of trying to cram as many functions as possible into one set of keys so as to eliminate the need for a focus/browse mode, you just use all the available keys. Its quick, and theres no need to hold down a two-key modifier or mess with a sticky/quicknav mode whenever you need to change interaction/navigation modes. Granted, some of this might be a personal learning curve thing, but Ive used Chromevox and OS X enough to think it could be otherwise; I wonder how efficiency compares between users of those systems and screen readers like NVDA and Orca. A lot of people only use one of the other, so itd be a hard thing to measure definitively. For all I know NVDA users like myself are the inefficient ones . The ideas behind Chromevox and Voiceover are really cool on paper, but it seems to me in practice they usually end up adding more complexity (touchscreens are a di
fferent matter entirely.) I dont mean to sound like Im bashing; this is obviously only my opinion and Im glad Google builds a screen reader into Chrome OS. I think Chromebooks are great devices, even if I personally no longer use one, and a lot of the reasons I had for ditching mine didnt have to do with Chromevox, so I might be judging it a little unfairly.

I totally agree with the good and bad music idea, I just like to use genres to find certain things that sound similar. I only discovered that I actually had my own distinct taste in music at 15, about 3 or so years ago, and it took almost another two years for that to mature beyond angsty teenage post-grunge rock, so I definitely still have a long way to go; combine that with the fact that not many people Im around regularly have their own refined tastes and I dont have many recommendations coming in unless I specifically look for them online, so I still havent explored a whole lot out of my comfort zone, mainly progressive rock/metal, a (very!) little older country, a bit of orchestral and psychedelic, and some jazz. The database isnt my primary organizational tool, and Id never dream of using it for books and audio dramas.

Like I said its been a while since I read it, but I recall several books ending on cliffhangers that actually left me wanting more, but then again once I start reading something I pretty much am stuck reading it to the end if anything even vaguely interesting happens. Another thing that really annoyed me is that bad things happened to clearly good people simply because! they werent Christians, I remember one scene in which a main character needs a doctor to help him with something or someone (dont recall at all what it was anymore,) and as soon as he figured out the guy needed help was happy to help him and seemed like a pretty good guy. Unfortunately for him he wasnt a Christian and had the so-called Mark of the Beast, and thus could not become one even had he wanted to. Once he figured this out and that the world only
had a few years left to live, the poor guy killed himself. Again I dont recall much, but it seems like that storyline was more in-depth than a lot of the main characters. If that was supposed to make me want to become a Christian, it did the exact opposite.

@Dark, Left Behind is a series about a group of people going through the rapture and end times as depicted in the Bible. I read some of them quite a few years ago mostly for the action which I liked at the time, but the tone of the books seemed more anti anti-Christianity to me than anything else, and there were a lot of times where things were interrupted for long religious speeches and conflicts of faith and such which I found pretty annoying. Granted Im not religious, so I suppose I might think differently about them were I a Christian, but I was actually going through a lot of doubt about God and the things Id been taught and raised with up to that point (I believe I was about 13,) and if anything, I think reading those kinds of things actually served to push me further away from religion. The guitar in the song actually wasnt what I found ominous, it was the vocal lines, especially when he says sing with the fear at the very end and the
t;it will rain chorus. I actually find the vocals on CCK pretty soothing, even with the lyrics, another song I find somewhat similar in the execution of the lines and lyrics and which I love even more it Storm Corrosion:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tVuSKk_fs1oI havent heard of this Leonard Cohen fellow and that song isnt normally the kind of thing I listen too, but those are some very sinister sounding vocals and awesome lyrics, Ill definitely look into him more.Heres another interesting one I like called Cockroach King; Ive always wondered if King Crimson had an influence on that title.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HQiF1NZMPEEIve mostly been reading Star Trek for the past few weeks, also Finders Keepers by Stephen King, which I liked, except for his increasing tendency to create teenage girl

Im waiting for the last episode of the Horizons trilogy of Edict Zero which concludes season 3, and then am going to find time to listen to all 3 episodes in full.

Re: Some questions about iOS

In Rockbox you get the best of both worlds, since you can browse by tags or filenames depending on your mood. The nice thing about the database feature is that it will scan the whole player including the SD card, and its structured so that theres no separation between the two, so if I have some tagged files that dont happen to be in their proper folder theyll be organized in the database structure by default. Music bought from Amazon comes tagged (though I dont buy from them anymore because they dont offer lossless quality,) and most CD ripping programs will auto-tag most files provided youre connected to the internet. Before my music collection got so big I actually used to just throw all my files into my music folder and let the database do all the work; obviously this got pretty inefficient with a few hundred files when trying to delete things. As for navigation yeah, its the traditional arrow in and out of folders method; if ther
e hadnt been that pause between navigating folders on the Victor I might have actually grown to find that slightly more efficient. The time skip feature was one of the attractive features for me as well, though I didnt consider it worth keeping the player over. I listen to books on my desktop to save battery life, since I can still move around and not have a half-charged player if I need to travel. Unfortunately I need a person with me when I run, but have actually started getting into it a bit despite that.

Still using the same card with my Sansa and have no problems, so doubt the card had much if anything to do with it. I think it might be more my perception than anything; Im used to having items announced instantly and quickly with Rockbox so the delay was pretty noticeable, and Im pretty impatient in general when it comes to response time. I think simply arrowing through lists should in most cases elicit a near instantaneous response on most devices, and a delay for more than a quarter of a second or so on a portable music player is going to drive me insane. Ill usually have a 32gb card in a Sansa for music as well as the stuff thats on the internal memory, and it usually gets filled up pretty quickly, which is when the tag scanning comes in handy. The startup time was also pretty long, dont know what that was about either. Ah well, looks like Ill finally be getting my refund for the Victor in a few days. Ive got a lot of music as well, I
just dont see any need to organize it beyond the standard artist/album structure and I generally only have one or two books on my Sansa at any given time, so it might just be a different use case. Btw, it isnt necessary to run down lithium ion batteries as if was with older rechargeables, and might actually slightly reduce their lifespan as being drained can put a strain on the cells, though Im sure almost all devices that use them would shut down before it got to that point.Funnily enough my bank is pretty weird as well. About 2 years ago we were switched out of the blue from our previous one, Bank of America, because they sold off some of their branches and force-switched a bunch of customers in the process, which I still find hard to believe is legal. Re: Some questions about iOS

I think the navigation thing is just personal preference. The Sansa with Rockbox acts like a normal removable drive, with the internal memory and the SD card listed as separate disks, so no complexity there, plus it stores bookmarks and configuration settings in normal files; I really love being able to listen to a book on my desktop or laptop, then copy the bookmark file to my player and resume. I like to keep my music organized as well, usually just with the artist as a top level folder and their albums in subfolders underneath, but I myself hated that the Stream would play across folders. Also Rockbox can build a database with tags in audio files regardless of their location that you can then browse by artist/album/genre etc, and unlike iTunes it actually works very nicely. The other thing I like about the Clip players is just how small they are and the fact that theyre pretty much indestructible; through the years Ive had various Clips get dropped, throne, stepped
on, nearly run over by a car, accidentally left in a damp environment for several days, and the one I had the longest went through the wash twice, (once while it was clipped on the collar of my coat) and they all came out working fine. Theyre perfect for running too, because you can quite literally just clip them and forget theyre there, and for such a small device the audio quality is great. Okay, enough with my fanatical praise of the great Sansa . I do really love these little guys though, and its really sad to see such stellar devices abandoned by Sandisk. They used to be very cheap, around $50usd for an 8GB model, but if you can find one on Amazon (some are still being sold by a third-party seller for now) itll cost at least twice that. That Beatbox thing reminds me a bit of the NLS players my state talking book library gives out, but even more basic.
Theyre just really large rectangular boxy things, with huge buttons and a ridiculous slot on the front in which youre supposed to insert cartridges (ridiculously oversized 1gb flash drives) containing books. Pretty ridiculous how low most blind organizations set their standards, but that topics been worn out time and time again.

Re: Some questions about iOS

@Dark, I got the newest model, and I think some of my speed issues were because of the large (500+ at any given time) number of music files and folders Id have on one card. Still I found the navigation to be pretty cumbersome, and the wait while it spoke with the human voice samples was absolute agony. The TTS voice is atrocious as well, and I was irked by the fact that theres only about 2.5 GB of internal memory which you cant use to store music. Ive returned mine and am currently trying to convince Humanware to give me my money back...aaargh! Apples return policy is an absolute breeze, Ill give them that. I suspect its a moot point for you since youve got a Stream, but Rockbox setup isnt very complicated at all; I got a new Zip the other day and had it all set up in about 10 minutes or so. I dont bother with recording the filenames (though the process is all automatic and was pretty easy last time I tried,) and if you c
an stand them being spelled out its not a problem. Only thing I really dislike about it is its pretty hard to get time information about a track spoken, but thats a minor inconvenience, certainly not worth changing players over. You can alter pitch and speed and fine-tune equalizer settings, and it plays just about every format out there. The Clip Zip has a nice little alarm clock feature too, and Rockbox even runs on Windows in what it calls a simulator, which actually makes a pretty decent computer media player, with the bonus that I can listen to books on my computer, create bookmarks and put them on my mp3 player and vice versa. Sadly the Clip Zip and Plus have been discontinued and are getting pretty expensive, and the newer Sansa models dont support it; with Rockbox development being pretty much stalled at this point, they probably never will. Still a Zip might be a worthy investment while you can still find one, matter of fact I think Im going to
get a spare while I still can.

The thing is just way too slow and verbose; there was about a 15-30 second wait every time I turned it on before I could actually play anything, compared to 4 on my Sansa Clip. Very frustrating, especially since I can get something that does what I need it to for about one sixth of the price of the Victor.

Do not like it at all, went back to 8.1 after about three hours. As trivial as it sounds, the only reasons Im still using Windows are Eloquence and the fact that web browsing is slightly more convenient than Linux. I dont care for the voices in OS X either, which is why I havent switched to it on my Mac. Windows is probably the most ridiculous operating system thats ever been thought up.

Re: 4chan for blind and visually inpaired?

2015-07-08 Thread AudioGames . net ForumOff-topic room : wanderer via Audiogames-reflector

Re: 4chan for blind and visually inpaired?

Okay, Ive refrained from posting in these kind of topics and will continue to do so in the future, but I cant restrain myself. I know Im not a huge contributor to the forum and am not trying to flaunt my opinions but I feel I have to say something, for whatever its worth. This is not intended as a personal attack on anyone, so please dont regard it as such.Ive hung out on this forum for over three years ([[wow]]! how time flies!) and for the most part Ive felt that its been very much worth my time. As stated earlier I dont participate in a whole lot of topics and often dont post for months, but whenever I have Ive always felt welcome. There are quite a few people here who Ive grown to respect and there have been some quite fascinating discussions over the years; its nice to know theres a place I can generally count on getting several intelligent opinions about something, or just watch a threa
d and usually come away feeling slightly more educated. Im not a huge gamer and for the most part stay in the off-topic room,so perhaps this has been the case longer than Ive thought, but in recent months there seem to be more and more... children, for lack of a better word, and Im using that term in the most negative sense. Again Im not pointing fingers and I am not referring to all teenagers on the forum; I myself am one. Lately Ive seen more and more topics and posts that are unbelievably childish (lets not even touch the hacking issue,) and the trend seems to be continuing. Im not necessarily speaking of drama, of which pretty much every internet community is bound to have to some degree, but general maturity and attitude in writing, things being blown ridiculously out of proportion, and some of the online activities that people engage in. Okay, since Im going on a little rant already, Ill expand on that last one.
Specifically, the damn audio skits. Seriously! What is so great about recording a speech synthesizer swearing incessantly for minutes on end (especially when insults are being directed at specific people) and then uploading them. Its not funny. Its just not. What always baffles me is how some people seem to think these are the most hilarious things in the world. Frankly, if youre laughing at most of this stuff (aside from laughing at the sheer ridiculousness of it) youve got a pretty fucked up sense of humor. This is, to me, the ultimate example of people who have absolutely no life whatsoever. Its the most unproductive thing that can possibly be done, and whats even sadder is all the work that goes into them. Why not actually make something worthwhile? I mean cmon people! Really! No words I could use would be sufficient to express my incredulity and disdain for this infantile behavior. I know those last few sentences were prett
y childish in themselves and I apologize, but thats been waiting four years to come out. Anyway, as was pointed out in another topic this is not a blind community issue; equivalent behavior can be found all over the Internet (lolcats, I feel sick just writing that word). I find it pretty disturbing the way some peoples lives seem to revolve totally around the net, especially considering the short time its been around. This forum is one of the few places Ive found thats relatively free from this kind of behavior, or has been until recently. Watching it devolve to the point where these topics are on the front page is pretty disheartening. I suppose theres not much to be done about it; as has been pointed out in the past harsh moderation usually creates more problems than it solves, and I think you guys (moderators) handle issues pretty well. So, in short, if you want to create a blind-exclusive 4chan, by all means, please do so, and take
this childish behavior there. Im sure it could be of use to researchers studying the levels to which human behavior can decay on the Internet. Might even steal that title from the original 4chan!Again, Im not trying to point fingers at specific people here, and no personal offense was intended. This is just my general opinion of the situation.

Re: Microsoft to integrate openSSH support in Windows

This is nice, dont get me wrong. However personally, all of Microsofts efforts to make Windows support a modern standard always feel clunky, inadequate and half finished to me, and I think this is more of a desperate move to stay up to date by a lazy company than anything else. The architecture of Windows as a whole is nonsensical, and theyre fighting a losing battle trying to modernize it imo. I mean, most Linux distros have an SSH client either installed by default or a command away in a software repository, and as far as I know OS X supports SSH out of the box, and its Unix. Oh, and so does Chrome OS. And this has only been the case for, what, 10 years? Sloppy, sloppy work, Microsoft. How about instead of fucking up the interface with needless animations, stupid predictions and search features that no reasonable person would use (and app advertisements! Really!) you start actually keeping up with the times? I really think theyd be better off comple
tely rewriting Windows and basing it on Unix, but obviously thats totally impractical from a business standpoint. Okay, rant over, and all that being said, I do find some of their recent moves with regards to Windows vaguely promising, so I guess well see.

Not sure why controls are unlabeled in JAWS, they read fine in NVDA, as long as theres text in the message field, otherwise I only see the entry and review text fields when tabbing. Selecting the blind contact list during installation might help, but I doubt it would fix your problem; as far as I know it only lists whether a contact is online or on mobile so that a screen reader reads it.

I believe as many do that there is definitely more out there beyond the physical realm, and I try not to dismiss any paranormal experiences I hear of out of hand. I think the whole create your reality thing and the idea that you are your own god are more spiritual metaphors than anything else; I havent looked into the new age movement so dont have much of an opinion there. With Christianity and other religions that rely on faith, being that there are documented psychological changes that take place when the mind chooses to believe in something greater than itself, Im hesitant t
o believe that peoples experiences of revelations after being saved are anything but shifts in perspective. I think humanity as a whole has the power to do incredible good if we really want to, and I really dont like the idea that people are all inherently evil; in nature organisms must kill one another simply to survive, so Id say if anything were the exception.

Re: Removing music vocals in gold wave, is it possible?

I dont think the cost or quality of the program is a factor here. From my limited understanding of these things, the only way you can really remove vocals is by removing a set frequency band where they reside, and unfortunately for any complex piece of music this is going to affect the rest of the track as well, while still probably leaving traces. So as far as I know, there is no reliable way to do this, unless of course as Kenzon said theyre either on one channel or youve got the individual instrument files, in which case you wouldnt need a vocal remover in the first place! Id be happy to be found wrong though, as there are some bass and guitar tracks that would be really nice to have individually, separate from the rest of the composition.

Also the ending was just sad, and felt almost totally hopeless. Im anxiously awaiting new releases from Leviathan and Edict Zero, the latter of which should have a new episode out shortly. Dont know if Humanware ever fixed this (knowing them, I suspect not) so I wonder if it would be possible to telnet into the Apex when its hooked up to ethernet. My guess would be no, since the OS isnt yet fully loaded, but a lot of routers have bootloaders that allow basic interactions over the network like transfering files with tftp or sending basic commands in case the firmware is corrupted. I have an MPower so cant test this myself, but itd be interesting to find out if it would work.

I thought Q-Squared was okay, though I get tired of the superbeings come in and muck about with everything plots, and Im not a huge fan of his writing style. I found Vendetta to be very slow and hard to get into until the very end, but its been a long time since I read that too. I think Vulcans soul might be available as unabridged audio somewhere, but I dont know for sure.

Re: Let's Discuss Everything About Star Trek

I wasnt fond of the Peter David books either, most of them seemed to basically turn the whole plot into a high school drama-esque thing. Those Blish novelizations were the first Trek books I ever read, and looking back theyre pretty terrible. Its actually a lot better now, as there is an established cannon, and the authors do pretty well with continuity. I dont believe anythings available in audio except for heavily abridged ones from the 80s, which as you saw were mostly not that great.

Re: Let's Discuss Everything About Star Trek

Im a fan as well, though not to any major extent besides watching and reading. I actually was introduced to Trek through the books, and still havent watched a series in its entirety, though Id say Ive seen all of the important episodes except Enterprise. Pretty much agree with everything you guys have said here about Voyager and DS9, though being as I wasnt watching the whole series I didnt have as much of a problem with Seven; her character is very well developed in the relaunch books, particularly her struggle with her identity after the Borg are...well I wont spoil it here, in case anyone wants to read about it.The Borg finally start a full-on invasion of the federation, and for all its cheesiness, I love their last message: We are the Borg. You will be annihilated. Your technological and biological distinctiveness have become irrelevant. Resistance is futile...but welcome. This is chronicled in the Destiny trilogy, which, w
hile I think the ending was a bit too cutesy, was pretty well done overall. I love that the books can go really in depth into some of the details and characters, more so than you can do in an hour-long episode. Particularly good are the Enterprise relaunch series, which is ongoing and is chronicling the Romulan War and the founding of the Federation, (except for to Brave the Storm, which absolutely, spectacularly sucked!) the Lost Era, which chronicled the happenings between the Undiscovered Country and the Next Generation, Titan, a lot of the books dealing with the Starfleet Corps of Engineers, the Department of Temporal Investigations series which expands on the DTI agents in Deep Space 9, Vulcans Soul which is about the Romulans split from Vulcan, the spam series...just to name a few. The lit universe does have its low points though just like the shows, and they can get pretty low, especially since now that theres no magic reset button an author can completely c
rap all over the universe and leave others to pick up the pieces. This has happened quite a few times over the last few years; the Fall, which deals with events after a Federation president is assasinated (wonder if shel eventually get magically resurrected like all the other characters seem to these days?) started off a bit boring, then had three really awesome books, but I couldnt even finish the last one, the Amazon reviews having told me all I needed to know, which wasnt much. Overall though Id say most of the more recent books are pretty decent, and quite a few are great.Im not a huge fan of the Original Series episodes, though there have been some good books coming from there as well. One episode that used to absolutely scare the hell out of me was the Changeling, not because of the content but just the general concept, that of something technological that originally had a noble purpose being twisted to just mindlessly kill. I dislike the ne
w movies as well, and my opinion of the new Star Wars movie when it is released will probably be the same: theyre just generic action flicks. The film industry seems to be really fond of milking franchises for all theyre worth beyond all reason, simply because they were once classics.I seem to be losing interest a little as of late, as I havent been keeping up with the release of the books as I used to.

My portable keyboard and its stand. The keyboard is made mainly of plastic so dont think Id be able to do much bashing with that, but the stand is essentially some crisscrossed metal bars, so might be able to use that as either a bludgen or a very unwieldy club-type thing.

Just a comment about the keyboard thing. Not being able to raise settings in NVDA with the synth ring keys is not unique to apple keyboards. Its an issue for me both with my Logitech bluetooth keyboard, as well as in my XP VM under Linux. I believe it has also come up with some USB keyboards as well, though I dont recall for sure. Its quite annoying, but in this case its not their problem. Not sure exactly where the bug is, whether its with NVDA or the WIndows keyboard driver.

Re: Uncle! Yosemite it is, then.

Just a few mostly related thoughts I cant help posting.I dont own a Mac, so cant comment at all on OS X; Ive only used it a few times and not for web browsing. Ive used Safari a bit on my phone running iOS 7, but found it incredibly frustrating and havent touched it in a very long while. My primary laptop and desktop are dual-booting Windows 8.1 and Arch Linux (with the evil, evil Systemd), and Ive been trying to transition completely to Linux with Windows in a VM. The problem is that no matter how you look at it, web browsing is much, much more convenient with NVDA under Windows than it is with Orca, despite all the progress theyve been making. So I get lazy and still boot into Windows most of the time. I have another laptop running just Linux and do fine on it, its just a bit more frustrating to use; its definitely getting better though as Orca is updated.Every time I have a new installation of Windows, I h
ave to spend at least a half hour in Task Scheduler, services, system settings etc turning off all the unnecessary features that are on by default. Even with that done, the few times Ive bothered to monitor it Windows seems to be constantly using my internet, into the megabytes, with nothing open, and I cant figure out why. Linux, on the other hand, is fast, elegant, simple, secure and light on resources. If it werent for the bad Firefox accessibility Id switch to it full-time, only running Windows in a VM. Hopefully that day will come soon. All my gripes at Microsoft aside, I am also somewhat excited about Windows 10, hopefully it will be warranted.

Going to be reading Revival by Stephen king as well as the Running aman, which should be interesting.

Re: Monthly chat January 2015

Since this topics been quiet for a while, I figured Id post this for some entertainment. Its an assignment I did for psychology class, in which you create a parody of a fairy tale that deals with mental illnesses and uses psychological terms; mine was a very loose parody of Snow White. Its quite ridiculous, and intentionally so. Enjoy.Once upon a time, in the town of Schizoid, there lived a very average-looking girl named Snow White. She was given this not uncommon name because when she was born, her mother, a meteorologist (who also happened to be the queen of the town) looked up at the sky, saw nothing, said “snow! aaaggh!” and fell into a catatonic state from which she would never awaken, only moving to eat every few days and mumble indistinctly about random things like french fries, orchids, and electrically charged potatoes, but most of all something she called “catatonic schizophrenia,” and how she was oh so very glad she did not have it. The king, being a strong believer in fair treatment for everyone, disowned both mother and child. And so, as the attending doctor was extremely literal-minded, the new childs name was said to be Snow Aaaggh White. This creature proved to be one of the most unique the town had ever seen. No one much cared for her, so she wandered from house to house, becoming more convinced every day both that she was the rightful queen in exile and that the current queen was out to kill her.Meanwhile, the king of the town remarried. The new queen was so stunningly ugly that some fortunate souls were said to have immediately died in fear after only a glimpse of her face. This was a blessing for them, as they would never had to see it again. She loved to show off in the streets, and spent hours simply looking in the mirror at her face, reflecting upon how gorgeous she was and that most people, if they could truly be considered such, were so far below her in every way that acknowledging their existences was more trouble than it was worth. One day while looking at her reflection in the mirror, it suddenly disappeared. In its place was the ugliest face she had ever laid eyes upon. Nonetheless, her mirror growing a face did not seem at all odd to her.“Yo, hows it goin?” asked the mirror. “Go away,” she replied petulently. “No,” it said. “You suck, and your face gets uglier by the second.”The queen, enraged, threw the mirror, where it hit her sleeping husband on the head and shattered. “Ow,” he said. “Shut up!” snapped the queen. “This mirror just told me Im ugly.” “You are ugly, honey,” he replied. “Thats why I married you.” “Wait, the mirror was talking to you? I think you might have something called paranoid schizo-- no, wait, thats what that Snow White girl has. I think youve got generalized schizophrenia and nar--” The king has now played his role in this narrative and will not be discussed further, except to say that he was never heard from again; the details of his demise are irrelevant. Some time later, as the queen was mourning the loss of her beloved mirror, the ugly face from before reappeared, looking exactly as it had on the mirror. It belched, then continued. “Anyway, youre the ugliest human being Ive ever seen. But theres an easy fix. Go out into town tomorrow, and instead of shouting about how beautiful you are, sing about how much you love your mirror-face. Then at nightfall, name me king.” Not wanting to accede to the mirror-faces demand, the queen nevertheless didnt like anyone thinking of her as anything but gorgeous, so, after a moment of thought, she agreed. The face smiled. “Good, good. Excellent. Now, about that Snow White girl...” The one with that paranoid schizo-thing my late husband mentioned? What of her?” “Yes, thats the one. Weeell, you see:.” Suddenly, there was a small “Ding!” sound that seemed to come from between her ears, and the face vanished. The queen, furious anew, screamed for hours and shaved off all her hair, then dyed it pink and threw it away. No one dared interupt her, but after some time another apparition appeared in front of her, this time a fully formed man. “Your ugliness, I must speak with you,” he said deferentially. “Do not address me in that manner!” screamed the queen. “Of course, your Majesty,” he said. “I am, after all, only a manifestation of your mind. Possibly being generated by the enlarged ventricle chambers in your brain. Anyway, Im here to tell you that youre mentally ill. You have severe narcissistic personality disorder, and generalized schizophrenia.” Not understanding what that meant, the queen nodded. “And what about that Snow White person?” “I dont know, Im only in your head. Perhaps you should eat her brain or something.” (Human brain was considered a delicacy in the town.)“Oh, and you should name me king too,” he added, then disappeared. That night, the queen anounced the towns two new invisible kings. She, of course, was still the most powerful. When drawing sketches to

Re: disturbing nightmares

Im honestly not crazy about the idea of getting counseling. Some of it might have to do with that bad social stigma (though I probably wouldnt outright admit it to myself) but mostly just because I dont think itd help that much. I get plenty of time to psychoanalyze myself; while a fresh, objective perspective might reveal something that Ive missed, I doubt it. Perhaps thats a bit overconfident, but Im pretty self-aware, and Ive never been able to describe a lot of what goes on in my head to anyone the few times Ive tried. @Enes, Ive never done any psychoactive (or any other, for the most part) medications, and dont plan to.@Turtlepower, Ive also experienced what you describe of unremembered terrifying dreams a few times, mostly when I was younger. Generally I recall at least a bit of every nights dreams, and when the little 10-15 minute episodes happen, recollection isnt difficult at all,but
not much would make any sort of sense without the context of my own memories. Im curious as to what I might do or say as well though I dont think it would be much, if anything, since Im in the exact position I was in when it starts. Its definitely an altered state of consciousness, but Im not sure it could be called sleep, like I said in post 1 theyre distinctly different from normal dreams, though sometimes in regular sleep the two can somewhat overlap. If I were expecting one I could have something recording the whole time since theyre not too long, but they usually catch me unexpected; a lot of them happen after Ive decided Im probably not going to get any sleep anyway and am just lying awake. I think it could be something biological, since while it was somewhat gradual, there was a definite starting point. If so or if its something in my core psychological makeup, I wonder if its simply a normal part of who I am
and might not necessarily be indicating any real problem. Then again my emotional state isnt always great, and for a long time now Ive seemed to have a general lack of motivation (though seems like it might finally be getting a bit better), so who knows?

disturbing nightmares

2015-01-07 Thread AudioGames . net ForumOff-topic room : wanderer via Audiogames-reflector

disturbing nightmares

First off, I dont really expect to get any help by posting this here. This has been going on for quite a while now and while its disturbing, I seem to have gotten used to it as much as one can to this sort of thing. Ive Googled around and there dont seem to be people who experience my exact set of problems, or at least no one posts about it if they do. I havent posted to a dedicated psychology forum because I doubt Id get any real answers, and I dont expect to get any here; I just need to get this out, so feel free to stop reading if youve got something better to do.This is not something I normally like to talk about, but since this forum is relatively anonymous I might as well.I will say that Ive had other weird mental experiences throughout my life, and while I can explain most of them away intellectually, emotionally I wonder if there may be something more going on. Without going into detail, members of my family
have dealt with onsets of sudden mental problems in the past, and one of my biggest fears in life is that something of that nature might happen to me. Also from what I gather, my thought process is not exactly normal (Im using that word loosely) so this may just be a part of my psychological makeup.Since 2011 Ive started having these episodes where Ill fall asleep, have a short nightmare that lasts fifteen or so minutes, and then wake up. This usually happens when I drift off after Ive been having trouble getting to sleep. Theres no consistency in the content of the dreams, but the thing that differentiates them from regular dreams is this total feeling of absolute wrongness, as if reality itself has been contaminated. That sounds cheesy, but its the only way I can describe it. They vary widely, and some wouldnt be bad dreams at all if it werent for this feeling. For example, once I simply dreamed that I had fallen asleep at my
computer or something, and I was trying to figure out if I was in bed or a chair, and possibly moving between the two, also my bluetooth headset was involved. Another time about a year ago I dreamed I was in the house Id just moved out of, on the floor between the head of a bunk bed and a wall, possibly looking for something under the bed. Throughout all of these dreams I feel this sick horror or dread, and upon waking up, its irritating if nothing else; a couple times its gotten to the point where Ive simply avoided sleeping almost all night if Im not tired, and dealing with the consequences the next day. Sometimes it sneaks up on me when I am tired, and so I now approach sleep, which Id normally look forward to at the end of the day, with a degree of trepidation. All my life, Ive always been curious about what that nights dreams would bring, but as of late, even excluding these particular episodes, my dreams have taken a serious turn
to the negative. And yes, Ive tried all the standard suggestions, thinking positive thoughts etc, but nothing seems to work. The onset of these dreams seems to have been somewhat gradual; I recall a similar one back in 2010, and there mightve been more Ive forgotten, but I can pinpoint the exact day (and time) they started occurring frequently. Strangely enough, that first one was milder than subsequent ones, and it started just a bit after I started looking into lucid dreaming. They dont seem to be going away and I fear theyll get worse. Also if anyone is thinking to ask, 1) I dont believe this is sleep paralysis, and 2) yes, Ive tried to use this feeling, being that its a recurring dream sign, to attain lucidity, with not much success. It seems that whenever the topic of lucid dreaming comes up in a dream, it just gets incorporated into the plot of the dream. I think that if I were able to become lucid I might be able to deal w
ith it better, but the few times I think I may have been at least semi-lucid Id be afraid and sometimes terrified of what my own mind might throw at me, and desperately try to wake myself up. I dont just want to be able to do that; I want this to stop. And that is all

Re: Cromibility (AG Community)

Just popping in to say Ive also jumped on the Chromebook bandwagon, though my intent from the start was to install Linux; I just wanted an inexpensive laptop with better battery life than the one Im currently using, and built-in bluetooth. I wanted to install Archlinux on it, but unfortunately and unknown to me at the time I bought it, Chromebooks with BayTrail processors dont support legacy boot mode, so I guess Im stuck on Chrome OS or Crouton. I have the Acer Chromebook 11 and got it about two weeks ago, and am still trying to figure out how Im going to set it up. Chrome OS looks nice enough from what Ive seen except for the audio player, which has all unlabeled controls, and the terminal, which ChromeVox is horrible with. Also I dont like the default voice at all and its very difficult to understand at high speeds; I wish there was an Espeak extension, but so far Ive been unable to find one. I guess this is a minor issue, b
ut Id like to be able to turn off the screen to save power and for privacy, which doesnt seem to be possible in Chrome OS. So for those reasons Im probably going to be trying Crouton and see if I have any luck with getting Orca running. All that being said though its a pretty nice little notebook; very light and easy to carry around, and the battery life is awesome, probably because this model has no moving parts.

To allow commercial software into GNU would defeat the whole point of its existance. Why would you take a critical opinion of PB as a personal offense? Just seems odd is all. Personally I dont like most of those proprietary programming/scripting languages like purebasic, autoIt etc, precisely because, as Camlorn said, everyone who then wants to run from source must own the language, which can make distributing it under a free lisence a pain. The 512-byte MBR isnt needed on newer UEFI motherboards, because from what I understand the firmware on the motherboard is intelligent enough to read the filesystem on disk.

A few things from the last post Id like to address.First, regarding the FSF movement, its important to remember that were refering to free as in freedom, not price. Plenty of free software lisences allow commercialization, so long as the source code is available to those using it. I agree that the vision of the FSF, to have everything free and open-source, is unrealistic, wouldnt really solve anything and can be irritating at times, but plenty of good software has come out of it. I dont see why youre freaking out about your program not being accepted into GNU especially if youre envisioning it being run under Linux; PureBasic, .net and the likes are designed for Windows, so it wouldnt really make sense to want to use it under Linux anyway, and theres nothing stopping you from releasing it under an open-source license. Just curious, whyd you write a JSON parser in PureBasic? JSON is very common and many a

If such a thing were even possible without fundamentally changing the way the OS worked, youd have to be very familiar with the Windows source code...in other words, work for Microsoft, as theyre not in the habit of sharing their code. Theres no reason to read Linux log files on Windows; if youre remote administering a server youd most likely be using SSH, so youd just read them that way. Windows doesnt make a good rescue system and cant read ext4 besides. Being able to do the opposite would be nice I.E. reading Windows logs under Linux in the case of an unbootable Windows installation, but alas thats not possible either.Reverse-engineering Gnome would be much, much easier said than done; first, again youd have to get familiar with the code and exactly how it integrates with Syst

Just what we need, another fork of Gnome!I dont know where you heard theres a grub 2MB kernel limit; Im running Arch with kernel 3.17.1 (x64) and the compressed kernel image is 4MB in size.Hope this helps, and clarifies.

The copy-paste method doesnt seem to work, and the checkbox lists are only for albums, playlists and genres, possibly artists too. Doesnt really matter now anyway, as Im returning this sorry excuse for a media player tomorrow. Lesson learned: iPod Nano equals total rip-off. Dont buy it!Wondering if I should buy the touch in the same 16GB capacity for $50 more once I get my refund, as its still cheaper than upgrading my phone and its supposed to have 40 hours of battery life. Re: I F**ing Hate Systemd

Ive had no problems with Systemd, though Ive never run a server and havent needed to mess with it much. From a purely esthetic point of view I kind of like it, since so many components in Linux are written by totally different people who dont collaborate, and you just have to hope it works, so the idea of some consistency at the system level is nice. From my limited experience with it, once you get the hang of it it seems to offer a pretty consistent interface and configuration files, whereas sysvinit, cron, date etc had wildly different interfaces that you need to learn individually. From what Ive heard the only people having real problems with it are those attempting to migrate, usually from sysvinit when their distro forces them to upgrade. Its like Microsoft, except instead of changing the user interface on a whim, its the system and service manager. But as I said this is probably more esthetics than anything; I know that Systemd flies
in the face of the Unix philosophy, but its by far not the only common component on most Linux systems that does. And binary log files...[[wow]], just [[wow]]. Lookin more and more like Windows every day! These are just my thoughts, and again I dont have a whole lot of experience with it, but I certainly dont think it should be forced on people. That being said, I dont particularly dislike it either, just the idea of where its going and the fact that its probably not very good for embedded systems at all.

I believe there are some apps that do this after the photo is taken, however I havent tried any of them so cant say anything about their accessibility. Ive actually never gotten VoiceOver to say when a face is in view ever since upgrading to iOS 7, though it worked fine in 6. Do you have to be focused on a specific control?

Re: sansa clip and accessible mp3 players

I also own a clip zip and love it for what it does, though itd be even better if the interfaces of some or all of the rockbox built-in plugins were voiced as well; the default installation includes a calculator, games, a text editor and some other cool things. I got mine off Amazon for around US$40 (though I believe it was on sale at the time), and absolutely would not pay $85, which is the price they have on the talkingmp3players site. Installing Rockbox isnt complicated at all; turn it on, hold the center button while plugging it in, start rockbox utility, and the rest is automated. You can create bookmarks for individual files by holding the center button when playing or paused and selecting create bookmark. A .bmark file is created in the folder of the audio file you marked. When selected itll offer a list of bookmarks contained in that file, with the filename and time index, so going through them is quite simple. Battery life is pretty nice, when I did a bat
tery test on mine it went for just a bit over 12 hours of mp3 playback, and you could easily quadruple that with a cheap USB battery. You can browse the direct folder structure from in the player and theres nothing complicated about it, so no problems there. I have a folder called music with music in it, and create a new folder for books or just put the files in the root directory if there are only one or two, and it works great. You can even copy and move files in rockbox on the player itself. Plus of course the FM radio and recorder, which work pretty well. The clock tends to drift within a month or two, but you can easily set it back by a few minutes every now and then. Overall I highly recommend it, definitely over a stream or any other blindy player.

Im enjoying the change to fall as well, as it gets ridiculously hot here during the summer. Re: reinstalling windows 8

The nice thing about Windows 8 is that in most cases once an internet connection is established, it will automatically fetch any needed drivers and install them without fuss. This probably wont work with some older hardware, but you should at least have sound and be able to google around for anything that wasnt installed automatically. Also just a side note, most drivers that say they are for Windows 7 should work on 8, be aware though that the same is not true for, say, XP drivers on Windows 7. If something doesnt install, with an error that the Windows version is unknown or some such, try playing with the program compatibility page in the file properties. There was a trick to get the Windows 8.1 iso using the setup installer and youre Windows 8 product key, however Im no longer sure of the steps youd need to take or if it even works anymore; knowing Microsoft theyve probably patched it. All the patching is pretty ridiculous, but ah well.
If you want to free up some space afterwords, at an admin command prompt typedism /online /cleanup-image /startcomponentcleanup /resetbaseand when thats done, delete everything in the c:\windows\software distribution folder.HTH
