Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Beautiful Reunion Story
Laura - Thank you for sharing your efforts of their story. My cousins are working to find a Grandfather, and I'd like to share your story with them, to give them hope. Cheri is so right, about more needing to take DNA tests. One of the Kits that I manage, had a match in 2012 at 38. Centimorgans on Family Finder. There was a common surname, but totally wrong area where they were living and where they came from. Move forward 3years to 2015. Ah, the Holiday Sale. My cousins joined cash and offered Kits to some of our 85yrs + cousins, with the hope that their DNA would have more percentage of our family's ancestors Centimorgans. Result: 8 out of 10 cousins matches to that Kit from 2012 with 75 Centimorgans or lower. What we are looking for now, is that are the two ancestors brothers or cousins. Time will tell, but what a great lead that would not even have been considered if not for DNA. Thank you Laura for sharing, and thank you Cheri for encouraging us to have more cousins continue testing. As many of you know, I am adopted, and I have been searching for my biological father for many years now. 5 years ago, my husband bought me the Ancestry dna test. I then tested with FTDna and with 23andme, hoping to find dna cousins who would share their lineage with me. I learned to read Portuguese, and began researching on the Azorean gov't website to build a large tree with all the genealogy of my Portuguese cousins, looking for common ancestors between them. I have created a Master DNA tree which now contains over 10,000 people, and I have indeed found common ancestors. I am waiting the results of a dna test for a woman I believe is my aunt or 2nd cousin. Expected date of discovery: March 21st! Along this journey, I have been richly blessed me with so many new friends and Portuguese cousins. I have learned much about my ancestors, the Island of Sao Miguel, from which they came, and the struggles my ancestors endured, making my life possible. About 3 years ago, I was working off a list of all of the men who bore my biological father's name, Robert Moniz, and lived in the Fall River area at the time of my birth. One man in particular had a son, Cory, that I located on Facebook. I messaged him there, with my story, and he agreed to take the Ancestry DNA test for me. As it turns out, we are only 5th to 8th cousins. Not close enough to provide any clues, but I added his family lines to my DNA Cousin Tree anyhow, thinking sometime in the future, it may be helpful. I also added his mother's lines, even though she was French Canadian. That was about 2 years ago. My search continues and I have not really looked at this family in quite some time. Saturday morning I received a benign message from a 70 year old woman on Ancestry. Her husband had purchased the test kit for her as a Christmas gift. She had received her results and was showing a 3rd to 4th cousin match to Cory and was reaching out to me because I am the administrator of his dna profile. She was given up for adoption in 1945 in NY, and has been searching for her biological family for 50 years. Her husband had bought her the Ancestry DNA test kit for Christmas. She wondered if I had some small piece of information that could help her learn something about her family. Due to her age, she suspected her parents would have passed away by now. The only thing she knew about her birth parents is that she had been told her mom was 17 when she was born, and she believed her father may have been a married man. I responded and explained that the test she was matching did not belong to me, but if she would share her dna results with me, I would take a look, as I did have quite a bit of information on Cory's family. Then the whirlwind began. It was readily apparent to me that this adoptee was related to Cory through his mother. I could see this due to the common matches they shared. I started to identify common ancestors between her dna matches. And I just couldn't stop. I traced the lines down and then found yet another common ancestor between unrelated 3rd cousins, and again started to trace that line down and bang I found a marriage between the two lines 5 dna cousins connecting to the wife and 6 unrelated dna cousins connecting to the husband. I had identified this adoptees grandparents! I nearly fell off my chair. This couple had 14 children.. which one was her parent? Upon

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] DNA question
Thank you Cheri - that extended explanation helps so much more in my understanding, or at least trying to understand. Both of the 1928 cousins have tested a few years ago. So tonight when I upgrade the 1921 cousin's kit to Family Finder we are all hoping for a Lucky 7 year breakthrough at finding more information as he is 4 generations away from Our Common Ancestor, and the rest of the cousins are 5/6 generations away and have less of the DNA markers that we are looking for. It's all so fascinating and frustrating at the same time. Thank you again, Ally AVA Vieira Anselmo of Sao Miguel Pinheiro/Nunes of Faial In a message dated 12/30/2014 1:44:23 P.M. Mountain Standard Time, gfsche...@gmail.com writes: Ally, That's me saying that. FTDNA says back to the 2 greats, which is within some statistical confidence level. So my dad is born in the 1930s, so his DNA should go back to the 1730s. It does, I've found matches from the 1740s and 1730s. However, my dad has a match on his American side to an American ancestor born in 1696. I have the exact same block or segment in my DNA too! That's closer to 250 years back! Same start and stop location, same amount of cenitMorgans (cMs - a genetic unit of measure). What that means is my dad has a sticky segment. It won't split in half. It's an all or nothing deal. He got that whole block from his mom. He passed that whole block onto me. Did it get passed on to my sister? Don't know, she'd have to take a DNA test. And if she got it too, did her kids get it? Maybe, maybe not. Does everyone who descends from the 1696 man have that segment or block in their DNA? Nope. Some do and some don't. There's no crystal ball here. If luck is on your side (and if these 2 cousins are related on this common ancestor), I'd test both the 1921 and 1928 people. Heck, I'd test both of them anyways, just to get the DNA. It's stored for at least 25 years. Who knows what advances will be made by then. Sadly the people who are born in the 1920s probably won't be with us in 25 years. Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] DNA question
Cheri - Family Finder goes back 200 years from the testee's birth. So if my cousin was born in 1928, minus the 200 years, then he would possibly match with anyone born after 1728. If we are trying to match with anyone born before 1728 then we would have to keep digging in the trenches. If I were to upgrade another cousin, who was born in 1921, there would be a slim chance that a match would be found with in those additional 7 years, but worth the upgrade to possibly narrow down the search years. Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] A brick wall smashed - my own genealogy success story
Congratulations ~ nothing better in our research than to give, or receive a helping hand and have a brick wall tumble down. AVA Vieira Anselmo of Sao Miguel Pinheiro/Nunes of Faial In a message dated 12/26/2013 8:18:20 P.M. Mountain Standard Time, rapoza.2...@gmail.com writes: I'll try to keep this short, but from time to time I love reading a good happy ending genealogy story, and since I am new to this group, I thought mine might be a story worth sharing with all of you. ... I have been researching for 40 years. I remember paying someone travelling to the Azores to find a single record for me - it was the only way back then. I then went to the islands myself three times to do the research myself, in the original records, for the first time. Handling the original volumes with my ancestors' names is an unforgettable experience. In the early 1980s my wife and I went to Sao Miguel and while researching in the Archivo, met the man from the Mormon church who was in the process of microfilming the records. He took us to the little building near the Archivo where he was set up and he showed us the process. What a blessing - I rejoiced at the thought that in a few years I would be able to examine microfilms in an LDS family history center a few miles from home ... and I have spent many years and many hundreds of dollars renting and researching those microfilms! Through these several different efforts I have had the good fortune of finding 7 of my 8 great-grandparents, all born in Sao Miguel, and have traced their lines back for anywhere from decades to centuries, depending on the line. The 8th ggp, Maria Ricarda Gonzales, has eluded me because I only knew her birth date and that she was born on Sao Jorge, but had no idea what village. Her parents were circus performers in a small circus that traveled through the Azores, Madeira, Canary Islands, Spain, and France. Her father (Agustin Ribero Gonzales) was from somewhere in the Canary Islands and her mother (Maria Ricarda Martins) was from Ponta Delgada (and yes, I had their names as well). That was all I knew of her origin for 40 years. It was ironic that I knew nothing about her birth because she was also the only great grandparent I ever knew personally (she died when I was just a young kid). In October 2012 I had the opportunity to make a short visit to my home area of New Bedford for a family wedding. I wrote ahead to the local LDS FHC librarian because I knew they had a lot of Azorean microfilms; I wanted to know what Sao Jorge villages they had (figured it would save me a bunch in rental fees if I could at least go through those while I was there). I told her only the first name of my ggm (Maria), her birth date, and that she was born on Sao Jorge (I wasn't expecting anyone to do research; I just wanted to give her a better idea of what I hoped to accomplish when I got up there). That was all: Maria + birth date + island. Then the big surprise came: a few days later, while sitting in the car outside of a Garden Ridge store down here in south Texas, hoping my wife would soon stop shopping (!), I felt my phone vibrate; a message had come in from that FHC director. In that little text message she explained she had given the information I provided to one of her patrons who specialized in Azorean research and he knew about a website that I had never heard of (the CCA website). He told her to let me know he had looked at one village (Calheta; how he picked that one at random, I'll never know), and he had found a birth of a Maria for that birth date, just in case I might be interested. There she was in my little cell phone window: my great grandmother! I was able to instantly identify her by her parent's names (which I had not provided to the FHC director): the names of her father and mother which were in the record along with the fact that her father was from the Canary Islands ... not only that, but specifically the village of Santa Brigida on the island of Gran Canaria! I had no idea what island or town my great-great grandfather was from until that moment! My wife has never seen such a look on my face after she has gone shopping before! :) In the year that has passed, I have (exclusively through the help of a now dear friend in Gran Canaria) been able to discover many dozens of ancestors in four of the Canary Islands, going back the same number of centuries as my Azorean ancestral lines. There will always be more ancestors, more finds, and more exciting moments, but having a brick wall completely destroyed - because someone I have never met instantly pulled the needle out of the haystack - still stuns me to this day. May all your Maria's also be found in 2014! --Andy Rapoza A quick postscript: When I am done with this post, I will go to the CCA website and do my research from the comfort and convenience of my
Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Research for Hire
My cousin, Patsy (CNSPORT), and I, have used João over the passed two years. Patsy is pretty good at reading Portuguese, and found my Grand Father's christening record. However, she could not find her own Grand Father's record. What João found for us, was that at the time of my Grand Father's christening, the family changed their name. From Vieira to Vieira Anselmo, in order to keep track of which Vieira family was which. João, also found where the Anselmo name came from, it was another ancestor's first name. What I like about working with João, is that he takes the time to answers my questions when I'm not understanding something. He keeps what he has researched, so if for some reason you loose your copies, he can resend them. And no, I was not the one who lost my copies. Another group member, gave João copies of letters that her family was corresponding with from relatives living in the Azores. He was able to do the translations for her, and she was able to have a better understanding of her Azorean relative's life on the island. João ~ looking forward to working with you again. Rosemarie From: _Kathy Cardoza_ (mailto:kmacard...@me.com) Sent: Saturday, May 18, 2013 7:32 AM To: _Azores Google Group_ (mailto:azores@googlegroups.com) Subject: [AZORES-Genealogy] Alien Registration Forms -- Speedy return! If you aren't aware of the importance of Alien Registration Forms to your research, you should know what a wonderful resource they can be! Briefly, ARs began to be required in 1940 as a way to identify all non-citizens living in the United States. They registered at their local Post Office. For more information on this great resource, go to the Azores GenWeb: http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~azrwgw/alienreg.html Recently I sent for the AR of my husband's great grandfather, Ignacio Augusto Reis. First, I requested an index search online (links are on the Azores GenWeb) on April 21. I received the results of the search on April 26, via snail mail. With those results, I requested the actual forms on April 26, online. Yesterday, May 17, I received the AR form in the mail, less than a month from the start of the whole process! It cost me $20 for the index search and $20 for the form. I'm glad I requested it! I've searched for this man, Ignacio Augusto Reis, aka Enos Reis, for a long time but never found his immigration info. This form gave me the ship, port, and exact date. Even with that I had a hard time finding him on passenger lists. Finally, I located him on the _EllisIsland.org_ (http://ellisisland.org/) site but he was listed under the butchered name Jgnacia Augusto Reys Lima Lima was his father's surname which he never used any other time and I never would have thought to check that. A good lesson for all researchers. I was amazed at how fast I got results back on this! The time frame is much improved over the old method used, except that now, it's no longer free. Oh, and the results will be sent to you from the Department of Homeland Security! That gave my son quite a start when he went up to get our mail, LOL. Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Portuguese passenger lists
Cheri ~ Good info. thank for sharing. Went on a number of my 1880 census records, and not a one had the name of who said it. Darn! That would have been very useful, as my Grt Grand Parents ages very between 1870 and 1920 by 15 yrs. Ally In a message dated 5/9/2013 3:49:44 P.M. Mountain Daylight Time, gfsche...@gmail.com writes: Jo Anne said: I don't know how much of the census records are correct. Info seems to change from census to census...The census records have many mistakes by way of transcription. The latest, `1940 census, shows my parents listed as MillsSheesh! The census records are really only primary evidence for residence only. Any other info gleaned from them is secondary evidence. Census takers had to be able to write. They didn't have to spell correctly. And in Hawaii you have the special problem of many cultures coming together. So if the census taker was born in China and was sent to a Portuguese household, you can imagine 2 different accents trying to communicate in English. At any rate, whoever was home would answer the census taker's question. And if that meant the 10 year old, the 10 year old answered. The 1940 census had the census takers put an X by the name of the person who answered the questions. None of the other censuses did that. If you do a lot of census work, you can sometimes tell who answered the questions by following the family through the census years. The transcribed indices are a whole different problem. Human error can be introduced, especially with someone transcribing who is not familiar with Portuguese names. At Ancestry, you can submit a correction. I was told Ancestry outsourced the indexing to China, Sri Lanka, India, or high school students. I don't know which story is true, if any. I do know that their training of paleography is subpar. I've seen Turner transcribed incorrectly! And that's a real easy name! Jo Anne continued: I have info from the 1900 Hawaiian census that shows a Manuel Mello, B/D 1868 in Portugal immigrated to HI in 1887! married to Mary in 1889 - now do I take that as gospel? ... Dates seem to float up and down. Geez when they interviewed these people don't they know their own birthdate? Why do they keep changing, if, in fact, they are the same people? The only thing you can take as gospel is a primary source. A primary source is something that was issued at the time of the event. A birth certificate is a primary source for a birth. A death certificate is a primary source for the death. You can take the birth date off of the death certificate, but that fact is a secondary source. Secondary sources are something that was issued AFTER the time of the event. Most of our ancestors were illiterate. They did not celebrate birthdays like we do now with a cake and whatnot. They weren't asked for their birthdate like we are when we fill out credit applications, banking forms, Dept of Motor Vehicle stuff, employment applications, etc. And some of our ancestors used their baptism date as their birth date instead. When I started doing genealogy 21 years ago, I initially signed up for a basic genealogy class at my local adult school. One of the things we were taught was: 1) Who said it? 2) When did they say it? 3) How did they know? Take a look at this 1880 census (if you have a subscription to Ancestry): _goo.gl/9jNb7_ (http://goo.gl/9jNb7) If you are researching the John Bedford family (lines 9-15) in the 1880 census, you will know the answer to question 2 above. It was stated in 1880. But if you know that the husband and wife are about 15 years apart in age, and their kids are William, ELIZABETH, Annie, LOLA, and Joseph, you will be completely baffled that the census shows the husband and wife as only 5 years apart and that their kids are William, MARY, Annie, LOUISA, and Joseph. And the kids' ages are way off. Scroll way over to the right. The answer to question number 1 is there. I lucked out on that! (for those without a subscription to Ancestry, it says Obtained from a neighbor. Could learn no more. And then you look at all their neighbors (for those who can't view it, many are from Portugal, China, Russia, and Canada). I therefore have my answer to question 3: They neighbors really didn't know. They took their best guess. You'll have to collect every piece of paper you can find on your ancestors. Hawaii is tougher because you are dealing with a U.S. territory and a kingdom. So things are a little different with Hawaiian research. And if you can't find stuff on the husband, chase the wife around. And ALL their kids. Not just your ancestor. The information you need may be on a different kids' record. Hope this answers a couple of your questions. Cheri Mello Listowner, Azores-Gen Researching: Vila Franca, Ponta Garca, Ribeira

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Public Trees
That is exactly what I do, because what comes up to research is more than when you are researching with just a name, and that person family info in the search catagory. AVA In a message dated 4/1/2013 10:28:22 A.M. Mountain Daylight Time, djperr...@sbcglobal.net writes: I have the same frustration and I think the reason folks don't respond is that they are amateurs who see the ads on TV, jump at the introductory offer, find a few common names, swipe them to their tree and then lose interest. When they don't pay to stay on Ancestry, they're long gone though their incorrect information is there for eternity. The only thing we can do is put comments on their tree regarding the incorrect information but if their tree is private we're out of luck. One Ancestry member distantly related to me has only a dozen or so names on his tree at any one time - the names he's researching using the Ancestry sources. [AZORES-Genealogy] Books On Line
For those who are lucky enough to have a Family History line that has been written about, you can now go to the LDS web site familysearch.org. Click on Books . Many books have been digitized or are in the process of being digitized and you can read them at home, scrolling through the pages. The bad thing is, that before you would go to the book section, and all the Family books were in alphabetical order. Now you enter the Family name, and anything with that Name will come up, either by author, or county, whatever. So while it is convenient to do your research at home, it is going to be painfully slow. However, if you know the name of the book, you hit the jackpot! These are the flights I have flown the last few times I visited the Azores. From Terceira, I have flown to Sao Miguel and have a great taxi driver I use there. Carlos Rego speaks English; is enthusiastic about looking for the places ancestors lived and visiting anyone in the villages that might have more information about the family you seek. In Terceira, I have relied on Joao Ventura to direct me to taxi drivers that help me visit the villages where my ancestors lived; to find information in the churches where they lived; to see the sights they saw, etc. In Faial, I have found taxi drivers (some better than others) that drive around the island to see the sights and also to visit the villages where my ancestors lived. I visited Sao Jorge only one time and did, after some searching, find a taxi driver that spoke English and understood what I wanted to see on this island. The only place I took a tour was on the Mainland in Lisbon. Since I had no ancestors from this area in Portugal, I was interested in just seeing the sights. Great Idea Cheri ~ and it is an easy fix! AVA Vieira~Anselmo: Sao Miguel Pinhiero, Nunes: Faial In a message dated 1/12/2013 4:39:03 P.M. Mountain Standard Time, gfsche...@gmail.com writes: Here's a suggestion (or a work around) that's I've come up with to solve one problem of contacting your DNA matches. Attached is a screen shot titled Match George. This is Altino Demelo's Family Finder matches. You can see that Altino matches George Mello, Shirley Allegre, Cheri Mello, Gail Elizares, and Nicolau Silva. So if you were Altino and you got your DNA results back, you would think that if you emailed George, Shirley, Cheri, Gail, and Nicolau, that you would be reaching George, Shirley, Cheri, Gail and Nicolau. You're not. The reason I know this is because I'm the project admin and I can tell you that two of the matches have proxies (kits handled by other people). You would not know this if you are Altino. Now, if you are Altino, and you write me an email that says, Hi there, You are matching me on our Family Finder page, I won't know what you mean. Are you really matching me, Cheri? Or my dad George? Or my mom? Or any of the other kits I handle? So I came up with this work around. See the screen shot titled Match George But Cheri. Now, if you are Altino, you now know that you won't be talking to George. You are talking to Cheri. So your email could say, Hi Cheri, I see George Mello is matching me on the Family Finder test. However, if you are a proxy too, your email needs to say, Hi Cheri, George Mello is matching my cousin, Jane Doe, on the Family Finder test. Or something along those lines. To change the kit to read First Name - Last Name (contact is ), do this: 1) Log into your FTDNA account 2) On the blue navigation bar, point at My Account, and choose Contact Information. 3) In the LAST NAME field, put (contact is _) and fill in your name. (My dad's last name is: Mello, Jr (contact is Cheri). The more people that do this, then Family Tree DNA will have their customer service reps suggest this. There is a helpful thing on Ancestry, when you first log on ~ where it shows others who may be searching the ancestor that you are looking for, what they have added to their tree, be it pictures, docs, or census records. If you want to click on their tree to see what was added you can. Some of these tree owners I have never heard of before, so it's not someone who I have spoken with in the passed. Ancestry is there to make money, and the more hints that they are able to share with you, the happier the world on Ancestry can be. Except when you are dealing with people who want to collect as many relatives as possible. I wonder if anyone from Ancestry monitors trees for validity. Besides, asking probably means I'm talking to a cousin. Heck, I even asked JR for one of his scenic pictures to use on the cover of one of our scores in band. His name is credited as the photographer, even though only only future band directors will see it. The only place my tree can be found is on Family Tree DNA and the only people who can see it are those who have taken a DNA test and are matches. However, I've always kind of wondered about being a bit devious (if I had the time) and putting a tree out there...complete with Ozzie and Harriet Nelson, Ward and June Cleaver, George and Martha Washington, and Fred and Wilma Flintstone as my relatives. I wondered how many people who would blindly copy it. Heck for that matter, if I attach a picture of Barbara Billingsley (actress who played June Cleaver) to my grandmother, I wonder how many people would copy that! Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Ancestory.com...My relative but wrong information ...
Terri ~ Patsy and I had the same situation, where someone turned a branch and replanted it on their tree. It wasn't so much that the names were now attached to the wrong tree, but we felt so violated that both our Grandfather's pictures were stolen. This idiot could not even attached the info correctly. My Father was now married to his sister. Both of us wrote her. Patsy, being a kind person, even went so far as to research out their proper line and show how the two families were NOT related. But the fact that the pictures were not being removed was wrong. Besides posting a comment at the bottom of the page, there is also an area below the picture to write a comment. I am not a program writer, so I don't know the difficulty for Ancestry to have a program that would allow others to read the information, or see a picture, but have to write for permission of the tree owner to share that information. Wishful thinking. AVA Vieira Anselmo ~ Sao Miguel In a message dated 11/15/2012 11:13:25 P.M. Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Furtado in Pleasanton, CA
Eric, You are right, Godparents are usually a relative or close friend. In this case, Maria Furtado, was a close friend, not married to any of the Anselmo brothers (8), or Pine (Pinheiro) brother. My Father never referred to her as his Aunt. He also, never mentioned who his God Father was. It is possible that he didn't have a God Father, possible but not likely. The only time she was mentioned is when he gave me her picture. So if I learn the name of the God Father, I would know if it was Maria's husband, or one of the uncle's. If the God Father was Maria's husband, it would be easier to identify her family, living in Pleasanton, or Eden Township, etc. The church has the name of the God Father, if only they will share that info. Since my Father was born in 1912, I don't know how any Anselmo or Pine (Pinheiro) information would be of value when researching for a non relative, Furtado. My original inquiry was if any member may have an ancestor whose name was Maria Furtado, so that I would be able to share her picture with them. Ally In a message dated 11/1/2012 11:49:47 P.M. I don't think it's likely that the records from 100 years ago are any different. The records for the Diocese of Oakland are kept at St Patricks Seminary in Menlo Park. You can make appointments to research there. It could be a lot of effort to find the same thing you already know. I'd try a different approach. Godparents are usually the parents family members or close family friends. Look at all the parents siblings, grandparents etc The most important information for this search is missing. You never stated you father's name, or his parents names, where they came from or when they arrived in the US. Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Furtado in Pleasanton, CA
Rick ~ No Saint Augustine's. I had wrote to them a few years ago, and the church clerk called me back and said that they no longer look up ancestors for people. She said that the Pope put a stop to information being given out without the written permission of ones Bishop. This has been a headache for the last two years. One of the items on my bucket list is to meet with my Bishop's clerk, who at the moment is on vacation. So once he returns, I will make an appointment and he will write another letter, and maybe this time, Patsy and I will get our long awaited copies. One can only hope. Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Furtado in Pleasanton, CA
Thanks Eric, The Mary that was born in 1905, is too young to be the Mary/Godmother to my Father. The picture that I have, she is at least 30 years older than he is, if not 40 years older. Also, she immigrated in 1921. My Father was born in 1912, and was baptized soon after. I'm going to write to St. Augustine again, and ask if they will give the name of the godfather. The only reason that they gave me her name, is that I sent them a copy of the picture and copied Judy at the Pleasanton Museum, as proof it was for Pleasanton Historical records and not for anything else. I did write Judy, at the PT Museum, just in case she happens to know or have info on the Furtado family. In doing the research with her at the museum, we found out that her Father and mine, attended Amador High at the same time, as they were in many pictures together. We are having fun, exchanging notes and as I am sorting through my years of mess, I am sending her pictures for the museum. Thank you for your help ~ I'll be in town the week before Mother's Day 2013. Maybe we can visit before you go on your shift. Ally In a message dated 10/30/2012 7:11:26 P.M. He has traced this branch of the family back to the beginning of the records and even found the father of someone whose baptismal records recorded the father as, unknown. This happened because he was searching for records of those who wanted to become priests and they had to prove they were catholic. This does not happen very often; however, in my case it gave me more information than I would have been able to find. On one of my visits, I was even asked why I was spending time and money looking for ancestors. The look that accompanied this question told me that, in most cases, the day to day struggle to feed the family, make a living and deal with many things we take for granted does not leave much time for even thinking of long ago family. The immediate living family I found to be very important. I thought about this and realized when I visited cemeteries that, in most cases, there were not even grave markers beyond about the 1980's. Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Writing the family history
Len ~ This is very personal, and each of us has to make that same decision regarding some of our ancestors. What I decided, was how do I want each of these ancestors remembered? Some of my memories are not from the passed generation. Where stories are being retold, with a possible twist in the telling. The Ancestor of yesterday, obviously being gone, is not able to refute the charges or tell their side of the story. And like any accident, if you have 3 witnesses, you have 3 different versions of the same accident plus the accounts of the two involved. That's 5 different accounts. What I have chosen to do, especially with a few of my flawed relatives, was to just make a few notes about their better qualities that I would want them to be remembered by. On the other hand, if there was criminal activity, I would include that story along with any source that provided those facts. It's your family history, and you can write about your interactions with the people as they affected you. Now if you want to write what others had to say, you can always use their words and their name as your source, but be sure you have their written permission first. After some research, I find that the kindly old man that I knew as a child may not have been all that nice. Stories are starting to arise of abuse, excessive drinking, and estrangement of his children. My father was a product of his second marriage and cared a lot for his parents. Vovoo was an old man of 75 when I was born, and I only knew a sweet, kind old man who loved me. Now, I am finding that the children of his first marriage did not hold him in such high esteem. So, my question for the group is: If you were putting together a family history for the generations to come, how would you handle this? Most of the stories are hearsay as there is no one alive with direct knowledge, but there must be something to them. I am inclined to be very honest in relating family stories, but I wonder how some of you might handle this. Dear Listers, After searching for years for Patsy's Grand Father's birth/baptism record we hired João Ventura. Those of you who attended the conference in SLC, UT or San Jose, CA would have met him. João researched all 10 of the siblings. As it turns out, the first 3 were referenced as Vieira only. It wasn't until #4, my Grand Father, that the name Anselmo was added, making the last name Vieira Anselmo. João explained to us that many times when there are multiple names of people in a village that one of the families will add a given name from one of their ancestors that will distinguish their family from the other. In our case they added the given name of Anselmo, which João said was a very strong name. João Ventura is wonderful, without this info we would still be looking. Because I lived in their home and listened to the stores told about their life before they immigrated, I thought I had a pretty clear picture of what that life was like. In 1989, I visited the continent where my grandfather was born and the village where was born where they received electricity in 1980. I saw things I had no idea existed; and, things were more modern than when my grandfather lived there. Although Terceira is more updated (I think the airbase has made for that change), from my first trip to Porto Judeu where my grandmother was born in 1999 and subsequent visits until 2009, I still saw bread being baked in what looked like a fireplace behind a house and stayed in hotels that had no heat in the rooms. In the winter of 2003, I thought I would freeze. The temperature was about what we have here in Hayward; however, with no heat in the room, tile floors, and cement walls, I truly got a feel for what my ancestors felt in their little villages with few things we take for granted. These 2 books have given me a sense of what the poor had to put up with. I got the feeling that if one person had 2 trees in a certain orchard, they felt superior to someone who had no trees. If a child learned to read, he was looked upon as someone who was showing off; and, there have always been bullies who taunted those who tried to better themselves. My sis (almost 90) is not doing well and my nieces think it best if we plan a trip South to see her as she always seems to rally when we visit with her and we are hoping it is so this time. Luckily, as usual, we booked with Southwest and they will give us a credit on our SLC airfare for future use and hotel told me earlier I can cancel with no problem. While the matches in this message do not relate to Azorean Genealogy the message is interesting and for those who have taken the Family Finder DNA test may find it of interest. What I find interesting is the Y-DNA and MtDNA test had not provided obvious matches where the Family Finder test opened the connections. Rick My husband Sam did YDNA and mtDNA tests at FTDNA 6 years ago. Currently he has 1,469 HVR1 HVR2 matches for his mtDNA (H3) and none for his YDNA. It’s been discouraging. So we decided to take advantage of the recent Family Finder sale at FTDNA. He had many 3-5 generation matches. Some of the names were interesting, but I thought, oh --- too far out on the branch to be helpful. And I was busy with other things, so didn’t get in touch with any of these people. BUT, one of them got in touch with me! Sue asked if Sam’s great grandmother had ever been in Lithuania? YES, she had! An intense exchange of emails ensued. I was familiar with Sue from FindAGrave and she was VERY familiar with Sam’s family. She gave me the vitals for many people. Because of this I was able to find others, and we were able to confirm that Sue and Sam are 4th cousins. Sam has another cousin Jane in this line who we’ve known for years, but no one knew exactly what the relationship was – or had not pursued any research. This prompted Sam to email Jane, and armed with our updated tree, they figured out that Jane and Sam are 3rd cousins! BTW - Sue had been in touch with Jane years earlier! Who Knew! Lessons Learned (and these are all very obvious, but frequently forgotten): 1. Sometimes information provided by family members is incorrect or incomplete. My mother-in-law had told me that her grandmother was from Odessa. She couldn’t say how she knew this and there was no proof. 2. It is helpful to include as much detail as possible when filling in the little boxes at FTDNA. In addition to Odessa, I should have indicated that great grandmother ALSO lived in Lithuania. 3. Don’t get discouraged or overwhelmed, and DO pay attention to relevant Names + Locations of 3-5 matches. E Glad you found your information and know more family. I had been researching the Vieira-Anselmo line off and on since 197Xish. I am grateful to have met my Great Aunt before she passed. Patsy posted a note on Ancestry in 2001. I didn't read it until 2007. Of the 10 children that first settled in Pleasanton, CA, two died without children, and we have made contact 7 families of which 6 responded and we remain in contact with them. Thank goodness we don't have to travel, and live in the computer age to do our research. Can't imagine if any of the results would have been so successful. And now with more participating with DNA testing, the results are having much more success, or at least for some. Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Need marriage help - Not Azorean
E When I'm researching a brick wall I: 1. On Ancestry review Public Members Trees and if something looks good, I write the Tree Owner. Out of 10 messages sent, I received 8. Of the 8, 4 were solid. And 3 shared with me more info than I ever thought I would learn from one person. 2. Since I'm not traveling to any southern states, I can write to the church in the area that my family lived. If the church is no longer standing, many of the church records were sent to the county for safe keeping. I was lucky to know the faith of my Mother's family, so writing to the church wasn't so hard, once I was able to get the address. Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Locating the village or freguesia
Gail, There was a family at our school and all 3 girls were Maria, so they went by Maria Jose, Maria G. and Maria ?. There last name was Gomez. Many times when a family lost a child, they would repeat the name. One of my uncles had 2 Manuel's. In my Grandmother's fmily it looks like the first Maria had died and they renamed their next girl Maria. It was the custom of Portuguese families to name their first born son Emanuel or Manuel to honor our Lord, and the first girl Maria in honor of our Holy Mother. Remember the saying you don’t know who you are related too? It’s going to take some time for me to find out where my grandparents came from. On the de Souza family his first name doesn’t even show up on the ships list. I don’t know if he went by another name. I don’t know if he was married in Portugal or in Hawaii. His immigration was in 1883 and his marriage. It shows 2 girls by the name of Maria, one born in 1882 and one in 1883. I don’t know if they are the same in one person or different. It showed my grandmother had 8 children and 6 was living but what I had is 7 if I include the 2 Marias. If they had two Maria’s one could have died. I think there youngest child either died or moved with someone else. He was 4 years old in the 1900 census and doesn’t appear in the 1910 census. A lot of groundwork on this one. I just wish I could spend more time with it. Pretty soon I’m going to be really busy and won’t be able to do anything. Liz, Thanks for recommending this site on annunciation. I put in some Portuguese family names and had to replay them several times to be able to hear how they were pronounced. Patsy, we pronounce our name incorrectly, LOL. Also, what I found interesting was that when writing Vieira or Anselmo alone nothing was listed under the names. But when I wrote the names together, Vieira Anselmo, Translate from: _Finnish_ (javascript:void(0)) , appeared under the names. The annunciation stayed the same. [AZORES-Genealogy] Google
Listers, Just finished reading Dick Eastman's letter for Plus Members.Went on Google to do some research, typed in my info Antone Vieira Anselmo and started reading over the results. Somewhere on the 3rd page was our groups postings from back in January where I posted a picture of a group of men outside Phoebe A, Hearst home, now called Castlewood Country Club. My original posting along with the picture and about 13 responses between others in our group were all there. I'm sure if I were to go on again this posting will be there also, as I am sure if someone was looking up Castlewood Country Club these postings would be there too. The good thing is that if someone is researching Antone Vieira Anselmo or another combo of the name then they would eventually read these e-mails.but I was surprised and naive to find our discussions open to the public on google. I guess it goes to the saying that NOTHING on the Internet is confidential or secure. So take note, and only give personal info (like phone numbers and addresses) when off the group site in private e-mails. Mary, We had absolutely no luck trying to get copies of records in a Pleasanton, CA church. I wrote ahead of time with our list, made a donation first, and was told that they NO longer give information out on relatives. Only parents can get copies of their children.I was told that the practice was changed by the Pope's order to prevent baptizing of the dead.I was told that they would only make copies if I had my Bishop write to them. I sent the info to a priest of the diocese. Still no records have been sent. [AZORES-Genealogy] Life is changing : )
I bought a book, many, many years ago when I first thought about researching my family lines back through the generations. I tucked it away and thought when I have all my information I would write it ever so nicely in the book. Now that I have pealed away and in the middle of dejunking the spare room I have once again discovered this book. The Book is called Our Family Tree . It is one of those books you would write all the info in if you did not have a computer. It's copyright is 1977 and I did not have a computer at that time. It has all what you would expect a genealogy book to have, Mom's line, Dad's line, family stories, places where they lives, etc. As we traveled back to CA I pulled out the book and was looking through the pages and thinking how far I have come with now having a computer and how I can arrange the pages to my own format. I will use the book to teach my 10 year old granddaughter how to be a genealogist. What I found interesting is the research area in the back of the book helpful hints. where to write to, bookstores which specialize in genealogical material, which listed Eastman's Online Genealogy Newsletter _www.eogn.com_ (http://www.eogn.com) : ) Way back when I thought about doing all this, the computer address sites were like reading greek and I was terrified of a computer. Now, I am so impressed with myself as I venture forward. And, thanks to Cheri, will be doing DNA testig with my Mother.
