I am using JAWS 14 with a Windows 7 64 bit system. I manage my
FaceBook
account through a client called TheFriendMail. I receive my
FaceBook
posts in my Outlook 2010 email account in groups of 50 from
TheFriendMail.
I have noticed for quite some time that when I try to click on the

links
before the one I clicked on, or 2 or 3 links after the one I clicked

Apparently, my JAWS curser is not where it is saying it is. Can
someone

Mike,

Excellent suggestions
The other thing Tom could do if he didn't want to select another
download place is to download it to the default, then when done go
there and cut/paste to the folder he wishes. I just went to the NLS
site and looked around a bit as I have not done so with Win 7 and IE
10. If you tab or arrow around you can find what you need to. You do
need to respond to the info bar with Alt N and then you are golden. If
you don't hear that and respond, I think you are stuck

Hi Tom,

below are steps on how to get sounds working how to assign your
downloads
to go to a folder of your choice in IE 9 10.

In Internet Explorer 9 / 10 there is the option of having system
sounds, as
there were in internet explorer 8. These sounds include a sound when a
download is complete.

By default the system sounds are off. To turn them on:

1. On the tools menu, choose internet options.

2. In the dialog ctrl+tab until you get to the advanced page.

3. In the settings tree view, in the accessiblity group, there's the
item
play system sounds-off. You can quickly move to this by pressing the
letter
p. Press spacebar, and the item changes to play system sounds-on.

4. press enter to press the default ok button.

Navigating to a default download folder:

Using IE9,

When you press enter on a download link;

You will hear;

Notification requires response,

Here you would press alt+n,

Now if you use your tab key, you would see;

Run button,

Save button,

Cancel button.

So, the save button will download the file into the default folder.

However, if you wish to change the default download folder,

You can press,

Ctrl + J, instead of the save button.

Now using the tab key move to the, Options link, and press enter.

Here you will find a browse button so, press the spacebar on it

If you either shift+tab, or tab your way, you will come to a
tree-view,

Now you can arrow and choose where you want your downloads to go.

Hopefully this will get you started,
Take care.

Hi Alan,

Yes it was but, this is not the only Systemax computer this happened
with.
It's happened with both my Systemax computers it seemed like running
Jaws had something to do with whatever sound problem was giving me
fits. I talked to their tech support people they couldn't figure
exactly what might be the culprit but, they wanted me to ship the
computers back to them so they could have a look at them. 1 of the
computers is a dual boot system I didn't feel like going through the
hassle of setting up both systems again after they got finished doing
whatever troubleshooting they were going to do. They had told me that
all drives would have to be wiped clean to see where the trouble might
be starting from. Long story short, I figured it was easier for me to
have new soundcards installed run Jaws through an external
soundcard since I've done that, no sound problems at all!
Take care.

[Blind-Computing] XP to Win 7

2013-04-30 Thread Alan Robbins
Most of my home network is already Win 7. However I still have an old
Acer computer that meets Win 7 OS specs and I'd like to put a copy of
Win 7 on it to use as a backup. If XP was not being discontinued in a
year I'd just leave as is.

Now for the challenge and hopefully some list advice. Since it is an
Acer computer the unit came with XP preinstalled along with a bunch of
stuff. So I do not have a driver disk with all necessary drivers for
the system. I know I could go with a Win 7 upgrade but I have never
been a proponent of that. I feel that is just asking to migrate any
issues I've ever had on the XP box into the Win 7 OS. I favor a
clean install over a freshly formatted drive. I believe in the past I
had read of some software available that could be run on an existing
OS and copy all necessary drivers to an export file or CD? Otherwise I
don't know of any way to get the drivers off the factory restore disk.

Thanks,

Al

been a proponent of that.

Thanks,

Al

I tried going through control panel, found the maintenance button
almost
entered on it, but didn't want to get somewhere that I could do more

So, do I envoke this maintenace button or not? Also, when I found

Ok, just played around an bit and I need to correct what I said. If I
hit F4 to scan read it does not tell me the orientation of the
paper. It is when I use the Ctrl Shift F3 which is preview it tells me
orientation. Use that command prior to scanning if you are not sure of
the orientation. Actually if you scan with the paper upside down it
will scan and read ok. Also, I agree the quality of the scans with
the Pearl is inferior to a flatbed scanner. For the things I use it
for it is quick convenient so meets my needs ok.

William,
I had the same question about where to line up the paper and it took
me forever to figure out that the guide folds out. Right now you have
it locked into place perpendicular to where it needs to be. With the
camera pointing toward you, take the top of the paper guide with your
left hand and pull it out. Pull kind of hard. Don't worry, you won't
break it. Keep pulling down until it locks into place. You'll then put
the paper you want to read right in front of you so the guide is on
the top edge of the paper.

Hi Shreyas,

Here is another explanation of defragmenting by the list owner, David
Ferrin.

From:
David Ferrin

Daily Tip:
Disk Cleanup
Defragmenting your computer periodically can greatly enhance the
computer's
performance. While helpful, all defragmenting does is tidy up what is
on
your computer; to get rid of unnecessary files such as temporary
Internet
files and whatever is in your Recycling Bin, run Disk Cleanup as well.
Think
of it this way: Defragmenting sweeps the floor and Disk Cleanup takes
out
the trash. Click Start, Control Panel, Performance And Maintenance (in
Category view), and Free Up Space On Your Hard Disk. The Disk Cleanup
will
run automatically. Once the analysis is complete, simply follow the
prompts.

Re: [Blind-Computing] defragging

2013-01-06 Thread Alan Robbins
Well there are two ways. First, the drive is very small compared to a
HDD. Only 2.5 inches wide and I'm guessing no more than a quarter to a
third of an inch thick. So, if the cover was off your computer you
certainly could feel it. Second way is I went to device manager and
looked under disk drives. My model # is listed followed by the letters
SSD rather than HDD. You also won't' hear and hard drive activity when
reading or writing data and it boots extre3mely fast, about 20 seconds
and JAWS is talking

Hope this helps

FYI, if you have a solid state hard drive it is recommended not to run
defrag. First of all it isn't necessary on a SSD and secondly, it
prolongs
the life of the hard drive if you don't run defrag.

Once the analysis is complete, simply follow the
prompts.
David Ferrin

Take care.

there are 6 jacks on the back and two in front panel. I mistakenly
plugged my speakers into the wrong one on the back and had a hell of a

According to my wife some box pops up on the screen showing it is not
connected correctly but even when we did we could not get sound back.
I was able to plug a USB sound device and get sound until we got the
problem figured out. Actually I continue to use the USB card on mine

This is true to an extent but the original question here was about
hand written material which to my knowledge cannot be recognized. The
Apple apps that OCR text require a lot of practice and patience as
they were not specifically designed for the blind, but rather the
sighted community. Having used the KNFB Mobile reader on a Nokia
platform I have to say there is no equivalent on the Apple platform as
of yet. I do believe at some point there will be. I'm not discouraging
folks from trying these apps but several folks on other lists are
looking for a suitable replacement for the KNFB reader say there is no
comparison.

Correct me if I am wrong, I have heard the apple i-phone has an app,
that is real time OCR. This is what I understand of it, but did not
get the time or space to research on the same, you launch the app,
using the camera on the phone one or two inches above the printed
matter and slowly hover over the printed material and the phone voices
the matter to you in real time.

Sounds really unbelievable, but if it is true, I am going to invest
heavy on that phone. I am sure it's not gonna help with hand written
matter, printed matter I guess it can take into stride.

Did you attempt using the JAWS pass through key, Insert + 3 (in the
numbers row), before your key stroke? This assures JAWS is not
attempting to interfere and run some script.

Okay, I will explain this best I can. To hide and unhide columns,
the
key strokes are alt plus h, the letter O, and arrow up or down until

you hear hide and unhide submenu Of course you need to select
what
you are trying to hide or unhide, hit enter on your choice, and it's

Try the following;

Press the Windows key and type the word Notification in the search
box. Use
down arrow to the result that says Show or hide the notification
icons on
the taskbar and press enter key. Use tab key across the controls.
You will
find combo boxes for choosing between three actions that can be used
for
various programs. The Windows Update item is
the item that will let you choose whether or not the Windows Update
option
shows an icon in the notification area. Each combo box
has three choices: 1. Show icon in notifications, 2. Hide icon in
notifications, 3. Only show notifications. Use up and down arrow keys
in
the combo boxes to make the choice you want. Tab to the OK button and
use
it to save your changes and exit.

Note: My computer was set on, only show notifications, I changed it

Re: [Blind-Computing] the image for windows program

2012-08-27 Thread Alan Robbins
Stewart,

You've seen the answers from Rick Dave but there is another option
that I use but does require a bit of work. I have a spare Hard drive
that I have two partitions on. I keep by backup images on partition
2On partition 1 I keep a copy of my OS, basic programs, and Image for
Windows. If my C drive ever becomes corrupt or whatever, all I do is
pop the side cover off my computer and then unplug my C drive and hook
it up to the spare drive. Machine boots right up and runs fine. Then I
take a USB bridge adapter (think that is what the little rascal is
called) and hook it up to my C drive and then plug it into a USB port.
I then run the Image for windows program and select whatever image I
want to put back on the C Drive . When process is complete, simply
shut down and put everything back as normal and you are good to go. A
bit complicated but a doable option if you don't want to use DVD's

Simple really, I used maximum compression from with in the program
itself.
It offers several options from no compression at all, as such creating
the
image quite quickly to the max which is much slower. I used two single
sided
DVDs available at your local electronic store.

Note the version I used when I created tutorial one can't perform this
trick. That was 2.03 if memory serves. They are up to around 2.73 by
now. I
have been receiving free upgrades for over 4.5 years now.

You claim that you were able to squeeze 29 gb of data onto two DVD's.
How
did you accomplish this amazing feat? A standard single-layer,
single-sided
DVD can store approximately 4.7 gb of data, while a single-layer,
double-sided DVD can store 9.4 gb of data. So assuming you used two
single-layer, double-sided DVD's, you could only store a total of
about 19
gb of data. Did you use some hard-to-find double-layer, double-sided
DVD's,
which can hold about 18.5 gb each? Or did you perhaps use blue ray
disks,
which have a much higher storage capacity than standard DVD's, but are
much
more expensive and thus not really practical for frequent image
backups? Or
is there some magical technique for cramming more data onto a DVD than
it
can physically store? Just curious.

If memory serves I did the first tutorial almost four and a half
years
 ago.
The program has changed slightly with some new features but it is
still
completely usable with a screen reader.

I like using maximum compression for my images. They take a bit
longer but
it minimizes the amount of DVDs you end up using. I just did an
image the
other day and 29 GB fit on two disks, now that's an improvement.

HI all,

I don't hear beep codes on my custom desktop either. I don't know if
its
because the speaker is faulty, the wire was never connected, or my
motherboard simply doesn't support such a feature. Either way, I don't
seem
to need them, and when I had my Dell I never knew what they meant
anyways.
(Smile). Manufacturer beep codes differ, so I think any advice given
for a
beep code warrants follow up research. Here is a little more info on
these
mysterious beep codes.

The computer power-on self-test (POST) tests the computer to make sure
it
meets the necessary system requirements and that all hardware is
working
properly before starting the remainder of the boot process. If the
computer
passes the POST the computer will have a single beep (with some
computer
BIOS manufacturers it may beep twice) as the computer starts and the
computer will continue to start normally. However, if the computer
fails the
POST, the computer will either not beep at all or will generate a beep
code,
which tells the user the source of the problem.
If you're receiving an irregular POST or a beep code not mentioned
below
follow the POST troubleshooting steps to determine the failing
hardware
component.

This is a question more suited for the list.

What does the beep on the computer signify when you first turn it on?
One of my new Systemax computers does not beep and I'm wondering if
they may
have not hooked up the internal speaker. Seems to work ok.
Must pass all internal test as it boots fine. Just wondering

Subject: [Blind-Computing] Trouble With CD/DVD Drive On My PC

Hi list. Lately, I have been experiencing trouble with the CD/DVD
drive built into my Dell Precision workstation running XP Pro. When I
insert a standard prerecorded audio CD into the disk tray and close
it, it takes a long time, almost two minutes, before it is finally
recognized and the option to play it with Windows Media Player comes
up. When I start pplaying the disk, it usually , but not always ,
skips, even after I have cleaned it with a cleaning cloth. The same
disk plays fine on my audio system DVD player. Some prerecorded audio
CD's do play continuously without skipping on the built-in CD/DVD
drive. But when I insert audio CD-R's that I had previously recorded
on this drive, they are not recognized. So most prerecorded CD's will
play, albeit with occasional skipping on some disks, but CD-R's that
had been previously recorded on this computer are not even recognized
and thus won't play. Does this behavior indicate that the CD/DVD
drive is defective and should be replaced? My workstation is five
years old but is still covered by an extended warranty through next
month, so I'm wondering whether I should contact Dell and have them
repair or replace the faulty DVD drive while I still can . I am
reluctant to try one of those laser lens cleaning disks for fear of
causing more damage and voiding the warranty, Thanks for any advice.

Gerald

as I type

Hi Everyone,

Not sure if this problem belongs in the computer or JAWS
list, perhaps either. I'm using Win 7, MS Word 2010, JAWS
12. I'm an accurate typist. When reviewing text I have typed
using Word 2010 and JAWS 12, there are frequent words that
have a letter missing. For example, catg, may show up as,
ct, or the word typed as, me, may show up as, m, with the
letter e missing. I make the spelling corrections, but when
I send a finished text article to my sighted sister, via
Outlook 2012 for posting on internet, she gets it with
spelling mistakes, also sometimes with changes in font
style, and with some double spacing she cannot correct.

Never had this trouble with prior systems, XP and before,
Word 2003 and before. Seems my problem starts with using
JAWS 12 and Word 2010. Any suggestions?

Really would appreciate help since I write articles for
posting at least once a week. Many thanks in advance for
suggestions.

Mark,

Thanks for the opinion, hoping to get more. I think Window's
7 will be supported for several years, at least the life

I hate having any new technology as soon as it is released.
Despite all testing etc. there invariably is problems with a
new release. I am also concerned with all the fuss and
feathers over no start button and menu. I have no idea what
this Metro thing is they discuss and have difficulty
understanding a computer not booting to a desktop. Of course
all of this is based on the fact I've always had this on any
PC I've owned and I'm sure I would get used to it

Looking for feedback either on list or off. I currently have
3 computers in the home network that are all running XP

2014. However, One of the units is having extreme issues and
really needs to be replaced. There is another that could be.
My understanding is Window's 8 is coming out in the Fall
sometime. I have no personal experience with Window's 7 or
8. I know once Window's 8 is released you will still be able
to get Window's 7 pre installed on new units purchased but
I'm sure it will fade quickly. So my question to those that
have tinkered with both, would it be better to replace units
this Fall while Window's 7 is still the base system or wait
until Window's 8 is the norm? All suggestions and comments
welcome

Hi
It depends on if you are using a laptop or standard

will access the JAWS cursor. For insta instance on a laptop
one must press
the caps lock followed by the letter p. On a standard
keyboard the jaws
cursor has its own key.
The reason you may want to access the JAWS cursor is to
read or
interact with information that the PC cursor isn't able to

Sometimes one has to put the jaws cursor over an item and
simulate a left
mouse click.
I find some programs require I access the jaws cursor

not.
 I hope this helps.

As far as insert, shift r, keyboard help only says r so

Hi list. There has been a lot of buzz lately about a virus
called DNS Changer that may have infected thousands of
computers and potentially prevent them from accessing the
Internet. Visit the Ask Bob Rankin web site below for
information about this malware threat, how to test your
computer to determine whether you have been infected and how
to get rid of it if you have. I clicked on the link given
on this site for testing whether my computer was infected,
and thankfully, the test page I was taken to was JAWS
accessible and reported that my computer was clean. This is
not a hoax but a real threat that should be taken very
seriously.

Lenny,

I have seen posts to your issue about a removal tool or
tools? Have you been able to locate them with the directions
folks have provided? If yes, what results did they produce

It is too early to open a bottle. Last night I thought I had
it. for over an hour it did not pop up in the task bar. I
restarted themachine several times and all was ok. I turned
it on this morning went to get my shower and when I came
back here it is at the top of the task bar.
Where the heck is it hiding?

Lenny,

Go to your start menu, then scansoft Omnipage. From there
right arrow and select scanner setup wizard or something
along those lines. Let us know if that is what you are
looking for

Subject: [Blind-Computing] Setting up my new printer

Hi,

I have a new Brother 4 in 1 laser printer which I am getting
ready to
set it up with my windows XP computer.

I have one question. I am using OmniPage 15 as my scanner
program to
scan documents to text. I previously used a Canon and for
the life of
me, I cannot rememberer how to tell OmniPage to ignore or
remove the
Canon from the list and set up the Brother printer to be
scanned by
OmniPage. I searched everywhere in the program and I cannot
find
where it knows to scan a particular printer/scanner. Does
anyone know
how to do this?

The Brother comes with its own scanner software which is
ScanSoft,
but from what I can understand, it will only scan pictures
and
documents to an image format.

Any help will greatly be appreciated. Thanks.

Take care.

Lennie
