Re: [Blind-Computing] internet explorer not listed on add or remove, win 7
Mike, Excellent suggestions The other thing Tom could do if he didn't want to select another download place is to download it to the default, then when done go there and cut/paste to the folder he wishes. I just went to the NLS site and looked around a bit as I have not done so with Win 7 and IE 10. If you tab or arrow around you can find what you need to. You do need to respond to the info bar with Alt N and then you are golden. In Internet Explorer 9 / 10 there is the option of having system sounds, as there were in internet explorer 8. These sounds include a sound when a download is complete. By default the system sounds are off. To turn them on: 1. On the tools menu, choose internet options. 2. In the dialog ctrl+tab until you get to the advanced page. 3. In the settings tree view, in the accessiblity group, there's the item play system sounds-off. You can quickly move to this by pressing the letter p. Press spacebar, and the item changes to play system sounds-on. 4. press enter to press the default ok button. Navigating to a default download folder: Using IE9, When you press enter on a download link; You will hear; Notification requires response, Here you would press alt+n, Now if you use your tab key, you would see; Run button, Save button, Cancel button. So, the save button will download the file into the default folder. However, if you wish to change the default download folder, You can press, Ctrl + J, instead of the save button. Now using the tab key move to the, Options link, and press enter. Here you will find a browse button so, press the spacebar on it If you either shift+tab, or tab your way, you will come to a tree-view, Now you can arrow and choose where you want your downloads to go. [Blind-Computing] XP to Win 7
Most of my home network is already Win 7. However I still have an old Acer computer that meets Win 7 OS specs and I'd like to put a copy of Win 7 on it to use as a backup. If XP was not being discontinued in a year I'd just leave as is. Now for the challenge and hopefully some list advice. Since it is an Acer computer the unit came with XP preinstalled along with a bunch of stuff. So I do not have a driver disk with all necessary drivers for the system. I know I could go with a Win 7 upgrade but I have never been a proponent of that. I feel that is just asking to migrate any issues I've ever had on the XP box into the Win 7 OS. I favor a clean install over a freshly formatted drive. I believe in the past I had read of some software available that could be run on an existing OS and copy all necessary drivers to an export file or CD? Otherwise I don't know of any way to get the drivers off the factory restore disk. Thanks, Al For answers to frequently asked questions about this list visit: http://www.jaws-users.com/help/

Re: [Blind-Computing] Open Book 9.0. Pearl. Upside down? (UNCLASSIFIED) - Email found in subject
Ok, just played around an bit and I need to correct what I said. If I hit F4 to scan read it does not tell me the orientation of the paper. It is when I use the Ctrl Shift F3 which is preview it tells me orientation. Use that command prior to scanning if you are not sure of the orientation. Actually if you scan with the paper upside down it will scan and read ok. Also, I agree the quality of the scans with the Pearl is inferior to a flatbed scanner. For the things I use it for it is quick convenient so meets my needs ok. Right now you have it locked into place perpendicular to where it needs to be. With the camera pointing toward you, take the top of the paper guide with your left hand and pull it out. Pull kind of hard. Don't worry, you won't break it. Keep pulling down until it locks into place. You'll then put the paper you want to read right in front of you so the guide is on the top edge of the paper. Well there are two ways. First, the drive is very small compared to a HDD. Only 2.5 inches wide and I'm guessing no more than a quarter to a third of an inch thick. So, if the cover was off your computer you certainly could feel it. Second way is I went to device manager and looked under disk drives. My model # is listed followed by the letters SSD rather than HDD. You also won't' hear and hard drive activity when reading or writing data and it boots extre3mely fast, about 20 seconds and JAWS is talking Hope this helps Al -Original Message- From: Blind-Computing [mailto:blind-computing-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of David Ferrin Sent: Sunday, January 06, 2013 12:19 PM To: blind-computing@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [Blind-Computing] defragging Honestly since I have never owned such an animal it would only be a guess so I will differ to somebody who does own such a drive. Re: [Blind-Computing] Lost Sound
Did you accidently plug your speakers into the wrong jack? On mine there are 6 jacks on the back and two in front panel. I mistakenly plugged my speakers into the wrong one on the back and had a hell of a time getting sound back. I ended up having to call their tech support. According to my wife some box pops up on the screen showing it is not connected correctly but even when we did we could not get sound back. I was able to plug a USB sound device and get sound until we got the problem figured out. Re: [Blind-Computing] Reading handwriting
This is true to an extent but the original question here was about hand written material which to my knowledge cannot be recognized. The Apple apps that OCR text require a lot of practice and patience as they were not specifically designed for the blind, but rather the sighted community. Having used the KNFB Mobile reader on a Nokia platform I have to say there is no equivalent on the Apple platform as of yet. I do believe at some point there will be. I'm not discouraging folks from trying these apps but several folks on other lists are looking for a suitable replacement for the KNFB reader say there is no comparison. Re: [Blind-Computing] the image for windows program
Stewart, You've seen the answers from Rick Dave but there is another option that I use but does require a bit of work. I have a spare Hard drive that I have two partitions on. I keep by backup images on partition 2On partition 1 I keep a copy of my OS, basic programs, and Image for Windows. If my C drive ever becomes corrupt or whatever, all I do is pop the side cover off my computer and then unplug my C drive and hook it up to the spare drive. Machine boots right up and runs fine. Then I take a USB bridge adapter (think that is what the little rascal is called) and hook it up to my C drive and then plug it into a USB port. I then run the Image for windows program and select whatever image I want to put back on the C Drive . When process is complete, simply shut down and put everything back as normal and you are good to go. So assuming you used two single-layer, double-sided DVD's, you could only store a total of about 19 gb of data. Did you use some hard-to-find double-layer, double-sided DVD's, which can hold about 18.5 gb each? Or did you perhaps use blue ray disks, which have a much higher storage capacity than standard DVD's, but are much more expensive and thus not really practical for frequent image backups? Lauren, This is kind of what I remember reading in the past. The funny thing here is I have two computers that are new and exactly the same. Possibly I just call the vendor and ask there opinion. I don't know if its because the speaker is faulty, the wire was never connected, or my motherboard simply doesn't support such a feature. Either way, I don't seem to need them, and when I had my Dell I never knew what they meant anyways. (Smile). Manufacturer beep codes differ, so I think any advice given for a beep code warrants follow up research. Here is a little more info on these mysterious beep codes. The computer power-on self-test (POST) tests the computer to make sure it meets the necessary system requirements and that all hardware is working properly before starting the remainder of the boot process. If the computer passes the POST the computer will have a single beep (with some computer BIOS manufacturers it may beep twice) as the computer starts and the computer will continue to start normally. However, if the computer fails the POST, the computer will either not beep at all or will generate a beep code, which tells the user the source of the problem. If you're receiving an irregular POST or a beep code not mentioned below follow the POST troubleshooting steps to determine the failing hardware component. http://www.computerhope.com/beep.htm LS - Original Message - From: Norman King norbk...@gmail.com To: blind-computing@jaws-users.com Sent: Saturday, August 25, 2012 6:00 PM Subject: Re: [Blind-Computing] Fw: CPU Beep Hi. Lately, I have been experiencing trouble with the CD/DVD drive built into my Dell Precision workstation running XP Pro. When I insert a standard prerecorded audio CD into the disk tray and close it, it takes a long time, almost two minutes, before it is finally recognized and the option to play it with Windows Media Player comes up. When I start pplaying the disk, it usually , but not always , skips, even after I have cleaned it with a cleaning cloth. The same disk plays fine on my audio system DVD player. Some prerecorded audio CD's do play continuously without skipping on the built-in CD/DVD drive. But when I insert audio CD-R's that I had previously recorded on this drive, they are not recognized. So most prerecorded CD's will play, albeit with occasional skipping on some disks, but CD-R's that had been previously recorded on this computer are not even recognized and thus won't play. Does this behavior indicate that the CD/DVD drive is defective and should be replaced? My workstation is five years old but is still covered by an extended warranty through next month, so I'm wondering whether I should contact Dell and have them repair or replace the faulty DVD drive while I still can . I am reluctant to try one of those laser lens cleaning disks for fear of causing more damage and voiding the warranty, Thanks for any advice. I make the spelling corrections, but when I send a finished text article to my sighted sister, via Outlook 2012 for posting on internet, she gets it with spelling mistakes, also sometimes with changes in font style, and with some double spacing she cannot correct.
