Re: [SH-Discuss] meeting minutes
Everyone, Before Tue meeting I did hand off the $4040 left over from the Akron Civic Hackathon to Devin. I'm assuming the budget includes that as well. If not, well, add that amount somewhere as well. On Thu, Jun 26, 2014 at 4:25 PM, a l leit...@gmail.com wrote: It was brought up a couple months back that the board would send out the discussion agenda for it's meetings. What is listed in the minutes seems a little sparse, If I recall correctly there was a mention of the intent to discuss ways to increase income as well as a request for comment from the membership/community. Is a more specific Agenda going to be sent out so people can comment or plan to attend? Could we get a breakdown of recurring monthly costs? I don't think we need one every financial report unless fees/services change. As far as I know it's something along the lines of : $500 - rent $200 - internet hosting, though other options are being considered $x00 - insurance $xxx - utlities(garbage~$75?, electric, water) Perhaps I'm being unrealistic but do we really envision spending $166/mo on paper towel, glue, and filament? Previously we had a budget less than half that and there seemed to be plenty of each. regards, Andrew L On Thu, Jun 26, 2014 at 1:14 PM, Devin Wolfe de...@midnight30products.com wrote: Didnt see these go through. At the moment synhak.org does load with our data from mediawiki Sadly, its css doesn't load or something I think in the past we've discussed that the main synhak.org home page could archive all subgroups of synhak's current and future web assets that have manifested in various forms - group spaces, mediawiki, camera homepage, photos, facebook, twitter, etc. etc. Is that still the plan? Two todos emanated from my last phone call with Craig were: - G will create a demo single page site to show everyone before the board meeting on 6/30 - Craig will setup wordpress on ledatech's infrastructure and G will demo that as well This is in addition to anything other members are pursuing. Its the web platform .. we can do side by side comparison of what works and what doesn't. Thought I'd start this a here thread for solving this issue in the shortest term, as now Craig does have ownership of synhak.org domain name Oh, of course there are a few risks involved: - mailing list server itself's status is unknown - might stop working one day? - ditto for mediawiki server? as both are hosted on amazon. Devin, have we made any payments to Amazon? Tentatively, I'm setting my goal to: - discuss synhak.org this week and next - whatever the membership decides, assist Craig and Alex with those changes the week following July 4th - hopefully between 7/7 and 7/11. Any other thoughts or status updates on this, simply reply back to this thread if any, pretty please? -G ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@synhak.org https://synhak.org/mailman/listinfo/discuss

[SH-Discuss] 6/18 3p-5p Ingenuity Maker Show and Tell (in parallel with WhiteHouse Maker Faire) #NationOfMakers
National Day of Making is tomorrow 6/18, per our President. Ingenuity Cleveland is hosting a local event in Cleveland. Details here: http://www.eventbrite.com/e/ingenuity-maker-show-tell-tickets-11936812327 For those that cannot make it in person, there is also a Google hangout: https://plus.google.com/events/cjv0rdele87aavnnage09ucl640 (starts at 4PM EST) (Reminds me of similar hangouts that ladyada hosts every week) Hakkers from Synhak and beyond should consider participating in this event as it is being coordinated with the first whitehouse maker faire (Thx President!): http://www.whitehouse.gov/maker-faire #NationOfMakers I want us all to think about new and creative ways to engage young people in science and engineering, whether it's science festivals, robotics competitions, fairs that encourage young people to create and build and invent -- to be makers of things, not just consumers of things. President Obama, 2009 The first-ever White House Maker Faire on Wednesday, June 18 America has always been a nation of tinkerers, inventors, and entrepreneurs. But in recent years, a growing number of Americans have gained access to technologies such as 3D printers, laser cutters, easy-to-use design software, and desktop machine tools. These tools are enabling more Americans to design and build almost anything. To celebrate America's students and entrepreneurs who are inventing the future with these new technologies and techniques, the President is hosting the first-ever White House Maker Faire on Wednesday, June 18. The event will feature Makers, innovators, and entrepreneurs of all ages who are using cutting-edge tools to bring their ideas to life. The rise of the Maker Movement represents a huge opportunity for the United States. Nationwide, new tools for democratized production are boosting innovation and entrepreneurship in manufacturing, in the same way that the Internet and cloud computing have lowered the barriers to entry for digital startups, creating the foundation for new products and processes that can help to revitalize American manufacturing. Stay Engaged *In addition to the Maker Faire, June 18 will also be a nationwide Day of Making, where communities across America will share and celebrate their involvement in the Maker Movement.* On Twitter, we'll be using #NationOfMakers https://twitter.com/search?q=%23NationOfMakerssrc=typd and encourage you to use it as well, to share all the amazing work going on around the country and to connect with other Makers like you. There are so many ways to get started. *Here are a few ideas to get you thinking.* - *Post photos of a current maker project* you are working on or choose a new project to work on and ask a couple of friends or family members to build it with you. You can find fun and creative projects ideas from a variety of websites for Makers such as MAKE. - *Host an open house* at your local makerspace or set up a hangout online to connect and share your inventions with Makers across the country. - *Volunteer to be a mentor* for someone who is interested in learning a new skill or *find a mentor* who would be interested in teaching a new skill you've been wanting to learn for a while. - *Create a project of your own and then share the plans* for your project online through Maker platforms so others can also make, modify, or remix your project. - *Organize a maker roundtable to identify and convene maker thought leaders* in your community on expanding Making initiatives, programs, and activities in your neighborhood. - *If you're an organization or company, encourage your employees to volunteer* as an educator and/or mentor to host maker-oriented workshops or classes in your community. - *Follow the action online* at *www.whitehouse.gov/makerfaire http://www.whitehouse.gov/makerfaire* - *Your idea here!* We are looking forward to June 18 and celebrating all of the wonderful stories that you share. Stay updated here, and follow along at #NationOfMakers https://twitter.com/search?q=%23NationOfMakerssrc=typd. *More links:* Makezine announcement: http://makezine.com/2014/06/04/white-house-maker-faire/ YSU is also hosting the event at their location: http://www.ysunews.com/stem-event-celebrates-national-day-of-making-june-18/ Case Western has a list of all events planned, theirs and others: http://engineering.case.edu/neomakers Hope some makers are able to represent Akron on such short notice. [SH-Discuss] Angelo might swing by, read my thoughts about him -- REMINDER: Meeting tonight!
Everyone, At tonight's meeting, please welcome Angelo - Akron's Bicycling Angel - in my book - a living legend. I am writing this email to set the stage for everyone so that regardless of whether I make tonight's meeting or not, you all know about him. *My thoughts:* I used to work at the Akron Global Business Acceleratorhttp://www.akronaccelerator.com/building and used to chat with Angelo at Summit Cycling Center http://summitcycling.org/, which is right outside TinyCircuits http://tiny-circuits.com/. At that time I was interested in learning about how tricycles worked. There is another location http://summitcycling.org/locations/ his organization maintains at Lock3 called the Bike Kitchen. Here is a short video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0y4DjHde0b4 about the Bike Kitchen specifically, thanks to the Akronist. A few days ago, I called Angelo and learned something that made me sad. Summit Cycling Center is looking to change their focus and moving Angelo's selection of tools over to the Bike Kitchen is not in their plan. At the Canal Place http://www.canalplace.com/ location, Angelo for the past many years has maintained a workshop of sorts where he has the ability to build a bicycle, restore broken bicycles, even provide a way for those interested in buying a bicycle to volunteer their time at the Summit Cycling Center for one. He stands for any endeavors that include human poweredhttps://www.google.com/search?q=human+powered component, whether they be bikes, trikes, unicycles, boats, planes etc etc. Literally think Wright brothers here. I call him a legend because of his knowledge of bicycles specifically. Through Summit Cycling Center, he has helped countless people appreciate bicycling in Akron. Angelo informed me that at his 900 sq ft workshop at Canal Place, in the shortest term: - he has a lot of stuff in his shop that he would like to sell by the end of this summer so he can vacate the premises. - after selling some of his belongings, he would like to complete a few pending projects in the space left behind so he can earn some income. - Using this income, he wishes to retire - in a grand way - make a trip from Akron, Ohio to Italy on a human powered device (think trike with a trailer) through East Coast to Norway to Europe (yea, pretty cool!) on a trike with a trailer that he will construct! When he asked me: 'Can I use tools at Synhak to build things I need for my journey', I said definitely! Understand that Angelo has been collecting bicycling related materials for a very long time. Also, he has until the end of this summer to vacate the premises. This basically means that he needs all the help he can get. If you can help him spread the word about him to your friends and family, that would be great. I'm pretty sure within City of Akron limits and beyond there's got to be other people who need the tools Angelo has in his workshop for sale. Well, I'm hopeful for it anyway. Angelo is a fitting profile of a maker who has been practicing his craft for a very long time and is now needing some extra help. I hope we can all welcome him tonight and that Angelo can work on completing his projects at Synhak, who knows some of his bicycle repair knowledge might come in handy some day. The more I'm using synhak.slack.com, the more I think I can use it for: - Starting channels of interest that don't exist in physical form at synhak (eg: how to play chess, I didn't start it yet - maybe in like 20 years or so I can - or someone else can beat me to it :) ) - Inviting others to the discussions, without re-iterating everything that has happened in the past - the way I interpret this, is the later an interested person joins an existing conversation, the more historical notes they'd have to read to learn about current status of any particular interest at synhak. - The User Experience is rock solid - I 3 it. Re: [SH-Discuss] Metal cabinet for flammables
Tim is a mind reader. Before lunch today, I asked a colleague at work today about how they store volatiles as well. I saw a 45 Gallon cupboard that I could describe easily as a bunch of fire doors cobbled together. The specific cupboard I saw was: - Bought from Protectoseal, 225 Foster Avenue Bensonville IL 60106 (312) 595 0800 - It had a NFPA Code #30 written on it, along with the initials FM in a vertical rhombus. - I couldn't help but notice on its one side, it had a circular 'window' for ventilation From what I saw, it seems the purpose of a cabinet like this is to prevent flames from impacting the volatile things inside. Googling resulted in this: https://www.osha.gov/dte/library/flammable_liquids/flammable_liquids.pdf -G On Mon, Mar 31, 2014 at 5:33 PM, Torrie Fischer tdfisc...@hackerbots.netwrote: On Monday, March 31, 2014 21:30:48 Seeley, Tim wrote: Such a restriction would be in the same vain as the restriction placed on risk producing power tools. Add to that Synhak fliers (roughly 200). I plan to ask the organizers of the event to see if I can order the same kit again. Re: [SH-Discuss] Saturday Cleanup and Cleveland Mini Maker Faire
Everyone, Synhak does indeed have a table at Cleveland Mini Maker Faire this year. I plan to manage the table, in the worst case where only I end up going. Our table is 8ft long. If any maker cannot attend the event, but would be willing to loan their project for a day, please please consider doing so. Cleveland mini maker faire does have a lot of young attendees that will appreciate any basic demos or hands on activities. I plan to: - take along my SnapCircuits kit that will hopefully be able to teach kids about electronics. - take black and white synhak flyers - hopefully take a keyboard, mouse, flat screen monitor, with a laptop that will run synhak pictures in a slideshow - perhaps (if I complete a simple demo) a tinyduino demonstration - 3V batteries and LEDs (thanks to Chris Neer for 3V batteries) Last year, I took my cubelets kit and the table allotted to us was literally stampeded by kids :) Another point of note is that CPL's parking was across the street. We did miss their loading schedule last year (which is usually between 8-9:30a or so behind the library for bigger items). The event starts at 10a, ends at 5p. Me, Torrie and Xander went last year. I remember losing my voice - as the environment got loud with lots of people. This year there's 100+ makers in attendance in two buildings. I might have to pickup my ASL book at home (hope not!). Philip, I don't know my schedule for Friday over Saturday yet. If I leave from Akron, will let you know - as I will be riding alone in my car which is rather quite big and can carry hackers and their gear safely. My primary motivation for going to CMMF is to interact with kids and share something of value with them. You all know my secondary motivation - meet and speak with other makers! Of which there are many more this year. If anyone would like to come along and schedule workshops every top of the hour, that would be great. Many exhibitors follow this format and its quite rewarding to see micro-events like make and take activities during the event. More thoughts and ideas, please reply back. -G On Sun, Mar 23, 2014 at 8:16 PM, Philip P. Patnode ppatn...@gmail.comwrote: Anybody - Would like to go to Cleville on Saturday, but I need a ride. Thought I'd share feedback .. can you check your account and see if they're all public ? On Mon, Mar 24, 2014 at 4:37 PM, Philip P. Patnode ppatn...@gmail.comwrote: All who like to look at pictures of people and happenings - I just uploaded another 20 photos to my Flickr photostream. Link = https://www.flickr.com/photos/119094119@N03/ All were taken on Saturday, March 22, 2014, at SYN/HAK, *after* the regular meeting of the GARC. Included are shots of Tim S, Andrew L, Martin P, Chris N, and a guy named Warren. There are three photos of the three-wheeled, battery-powered, remote-controlled Rover made by Martin P. Because of his medical training and experience, there is a rumor that he might try to convert it into a mini-ambulance for dogs and cats needing remote controlled transportation to the vet. The Rover would go to the accident site, pick up the injured animal, and scoot down the sidewalks and back alleys to the animal hospital - with all the movements being controlled by Martin as he relaxes in his leather Lazy-Boy. There are a few shots of the GARC robot on a table and some of it in action on a movie screen. Tim was kind enough to take the time to discuss the robot with me and show me two movies from the competition it was part of. Also, there are two photos of the air-powered robot owned by Andy B. Feel free to view, copy, share, or print any of the photos, as long as you are doing so in a personal, non-commercial way. Let me know if you need to use any in a commercial way and we can talk about it. If you want a better print or a larger print, contact me and I will make the original 16 MP file available. [SH-Discuss] Paint related items for everyone to pick and choose from
Tonight I brought in two boxes of paint rollers (photo of 1box): http://imgur.com/kqBWqPb At the moment, these two boxes are on top of the power wheels racing car's red cover in front of the back bathroom. Also, brought in some Duplicolor Scratch Fix All-in-1 pens (approx. 100): http://imgur.com/DlxbDyy These pens are of various colors of automobiles by make and have been stored at room temperature on the lower shelf next to our 3d printer. Typically I learned that folks that have scratches on their cars, can use them to fix them quickly. If anyone has use for them, feel free to take them home. On opening day, I brought some paint in a Dole banana box that is in the machine room area somewhere that can be used for projects as well. All this stuff is coming direct from Sherwin-Williams' give-aways they sometimes have for anyone to take at no charge! Per item, in their store these things retail for a quite a lot. I'm glad to share all this with everyone at Synhak. Those members who would like to learn how to paint, can consider learning it from those that do I'd say, now that we have a huge number of these rollers. Perhaps we can have a let's paint synhak's walls that need paint day! Regards, G ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@synhak.org https://synhak.org/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Re: [SH-Discuss] Field Trips
I'd like to ask Jen when would the kids come and visit. The only obstacle for a field trip as I see it is any of our member's with keys's availability to let them in. I think it will be most valuable for kids to witness some projects members have built at synhak. I can bring/deposit a few of my own. So basically this is what I think could happen during the field trip: 1) Intro and tour of tools and people that volunteer that day 2) Demo of any projects 3) QA in the back In between we can sprinkle break times for any refreshments (baked?) More thoughts? Of course if the kids come during business hours, some folks might not be available. We might need to consider that. So, show of virtual hands of folks that can be available for the kids during business hours? - G: nope On Thu, Mar 20, 2014 at 12:25 PM, Omar Rassi omar.ra...@gmail.com wrote: Ditto what Craig said. Re: [SH-Discuss] Little Archimedes/Aristotles
I like Becca's suggestion of consulting with others for advice. I'd say start simple. My version of simple - google for hackerspace curriculum or hackerspace workshop; analyze what's already out there; pick one format, stick with it for round1. I'm getting tired of 'Bethany has lesson plans' frankly. If she has something concrete, fine - that can be used if/when she shows up to share them But in her absence, we all can decide one simple format from an existing hackerspace or other organization that has experience with running workshops for younger students. Right about now, in my mind atleast, Torrie's SparkAK talk comes to mind - *Document, Document, Document* - to make sure that the organizing can continue by others. One example I found - Sparkfun has contributed curriculum - https://learn.sparkfun.com/resources In which someone from GirlScouts shared their Lilypad takehomekit as well as presentation: https://learn.sparkfun.com/resources/31 This is a very basic example. I'm sure there's plenty others out there. I only share this as I'm not sure if entities like JoAnn etc have kids workshops onsite at their facility, but a quick phone call to them and we can know one way or another. At Ingenuity last year 'make and take home' workshops were very well received. I'm sure they are planning them again this year. Our emphasis for the short term can be re-use existing resources, gain experience organizing the kids activities, tweak it to improve it for next time; potentially create new original programs for kids. Starting simple from the get go allows us to keep improving in subsequent programs we organize - note to future self -- kickass might be an understatement when describing a syn/hak event for kids. Take the remainder of the year to make contacts , get comfortable in our new space, perhaps find funding set up open DNS incase the kids are on the computers , make detailed plans for the program and launch it next year. This would give us chances to come up with lesson plans and test them out on a group of volunteer kids ( children, friends and family members of synhakers) so we can see the lessons carried out like a tech rehearsal for a play . Perhaps come up with a survey to distribute to a few schools to be sent home with kids asking key questions like: 1. When in the summer would be best for your family? 2. What time during the day? 3.would you as a parent want to chaperone the program? 4. Under proper supervision would you be comfortable with your child using tools such as drills, soldering irons, computers? Etc. etc. I requested lesson plans from Bethany on the previous thread and she did not respond. When I asked Andrew how much power the MH lights took he told me they drew ~4 Amps @ 110V. I was intrigued and looked at the side of the CF bulb and found that it only draws .380amps. More than a tenth of the power with a large amount of light. With more points of light we will have less shadows and an easier time seeing what we are working on. I've always thought that those lights were going to be temporary. They're terrible for producing any kind of inviting atmosphere. I know Andrew, Devin and many others have worked very hard to purchase, build, test, and install the MH lights but maybe we should evaluate upgrading to all CF lights for the power savings. When I spoke to Andrew about this he did bring up the issue with the longevity of the CF bulbs. I do see that they might fail more often then the MH but I think this might be offset by their low operational cost, low purchase price, and easy availability for purchase. The electrical run for the MH could be kept in-place, used for a CF setup and if so desired the electrical relay controlling the MH could be re-purposed and used for a machine/wood shop power switch. This is all my personal opinion. Ofcourse, I need help with coming up with what we need help with :) I'm planning to meet in person with anyone interested in helping with filling this form on Thu Feb 13th at 6pm at our new location at 48 S Summit St for a discussion. Until then, here are the important things in the form that we can all individually think about responses to (mostly a plaintext copy paste of things in the form that I thought were important): - Does Synhak plan to use a fiscal agent? (if not, Knight recommends Miami Foundation) - Proposal for a project - Total cost? $ - Requested from Knight? $ - Over how many years? - Synhak's operating revenues $ ... and expenses $... for the current year and the end date of our fiscal year - Attachments that would help Knight and they expect: - *Project Budget .. very important for completeness of form* - Existing funders - Any major expenses/capital equipment we plan to purchase - Proposal Narrative (few paragraphs per each of the following): 1. Purpose of grant in one short sentence 2. What is the project 3. List key activities and the timetable, including the grant start and end dates 4. Why is this a fit for Knight Foundation? 1. Explain how you will intentionally engage the community, improve or provide access to information flow, and address the Akron strategy of engaging and retaining the next generation of talent. 5. What are our outcomes? 1. Indicate 2 or 3 concrete changes you would like to see in place at the end of your grant period 6. Measuring success? 1. List the metrics that we will use to track the success of our outcomes Towards the end .. it states: As a potential grantee of Knight Foundation, please be aware of the following: Submission of this proposal indicates your organization's permission for Knight Foundation to ask people who are not members of the Foundation's staff to review the proposal and to give advice and information to the Foundation about your organization, board, staff and others with whom you are affiliated. [SH-Discuss] 2/13 at 6pm: Special meeting at Synhak to fill Knight Foundation Grant Proposal Form!
Greetings, Knight Foundation has emailed me a Grant Proposal Form. About Knight Foundation: Knight Foundation focuses on projects that promote informed and engaged communities. In Akron, we are supporting talent attraction and retention necessary to build a 21st century economy. This Grant Proposal Form form is used to evaluate whether Knight supports an organization's work. In this form, I plan to declare to Knight what we need help with. Materials submitted to Knight Foundation as part of the proposal process will be used as the foundation deems appropriate. They are not subject to any right of confidentiality unless specifically agreed to in writing by Knight Foundation. Knight Foundation is under no obligation to fund the applicant. If it does choose to have a future relationship, the foundation may suggest the type, including contracts, grants, loans, program-related investments or others. I'm excited about this. ^^ Devin, Torrie, Chris All: please let me know if that scheduled time does not work - feel free to counter it. My plan is to finish and submit this form by 2/21 After that it'll be in Knight's hands. This primer needs to be kept warm and applied to any red brick parts of the space. [SH-Discuss] Book on Akron: Inventive.Industrious.Inspired: The Story of Greater Akron by Dave Lieberth
http://www.akronohio.gov/cms/news/0b10d187040f88f2/index.html New Book Celebrates Greater Akron Publication Will Assist Economic Development *City of Akron Press Release* From the desk of stephanie york Published: 12-12-2013 Akron, Ohio (December 12, 2013) - Akron Mayor Don Plusquellic today announced the release of a new book that will be a tool for the City's economic development staff to tell the world about Greater Akron's business history and success. *Inventive.Industrious.Inspired: The Story of Greater Akron*is a 4-color hardbound publication sponsored by the Greater Akron Chamber and the City of Akron. In addition to its narrative and photographs, the book features 40 businesses and institutional profiles that showcase the products and services that Akron is known for around the globe. The book, issued by Cherbo Publishing of California, was authored by Dave Lieberth, a former Deputy Mayor, lawyer, journalist and historian. Dave's knowledge of Akron's history, his work experiences, and his devotion to the region, make him the perfect author for a book of this nature, said Plusquellic. Not only will our economic development team be able to use it as a recruiting tool, but it will make a good holiday gift for people who are proud of our community. The handsome four-color book chronicles the region's leadership in innovation, technology, and manufacturing, and celebrates the Akron area's wealth of cultural and recreational offerings that make the region the location of choice for businesses and industry. Greater Akron Chamber president Dan Colantone says the publication will be a particularly useful tool to tell the Greater Akron story at international trade shows that the Chamber attends with city and county economic development teams. The book's publication was launched this week at the Chamber's annual shareholders' meeting. The only retail sale of the book will be through the Summit County Historical Society, which will receive all proceeds of local sales. It may also be purchased from online retailer Amazon. To complement the print product and ensure global distribution, the publication will also be available as a fully searchable, interactive e-book. The story of Greater Akron is the story of the renaissance of a great American city from a canal town to a global center of biomedical engineering, Brookings Institution called Akron as one of America's leading legacy cities, having leveraged its dominance in the tire and rubber industry to evolve into a center of research and advanced manufacturing in polymers, plastics, composites and metals. The seeds for the region's future were planted in 1909 when the first class taught anywhere in the world on the subject of rubber chemistry was offered at the University of Akron. Today, UA is the nation's largest center of polymer education, and the only Ohio university to have an engineering program ranked in the top five nationally. More than 150 *Fortune 500* companies have facilities in Greater Akron, one of the world's leading centers of polymer research and advanced manufacturing. Akron is the gateway to the Cuyahoga Valley National Park, the tenth most visited park among 59 national parks. The towpath of the Ohio Erie Canal brings 2 million hikers and cyclists to the trail each year. *Inventive.Industrious.Inspired: The Story of Greater Akron*provides a new look at Akron. It is a time capsule of its history and a chronicle of the events that have made the community one of America's leading regions for new industry. *About the Author* Dave Lieberth served as Deputy Mayor of Akron for ten years and has had a life-long interest in the community as a journalist, lawyer, historian and civic activist. He was instrumental in the success of Downtown Akron and helped develop the city's entertainment venues at Lock 3 and Lock 4. He remains the city's coordinator of summer arts programs that include the free performances of the Heinz Poll Dance Festival and Akron Symphony concerts. Dave is a founder of Leadership Akron. He chaired Akron's 175th anniversary celebration in 2000 and led the city's long-term visioning plan, *Imagine.Akron:2025*. He wrote and produced the presentations to the National Civic League in 1995 and 2008 that gained Akron two designations as an *All America City*. Re: [SH-Discuss] future possibilities
At codemash, 8-12 Parrot AR Drone 2.0's were brought in and we wrote javascript code to maneuver the drones. IT WAS AWESOME! Also, a friend from progressive brought his arducopter - he didn't demo it, but his build was impressive. Cost him over $1000 to build as he wanted to build it his way. It was radio controlled and had a range in miles, had led's he bought at ingenuity fest from the led guys that had nicer leds. I'd say it would be great to build custom drones, and 3D printers at the space. Great idea Martin! I for one would like to understand how these motors work .. I'm completely uninformed on the topic of moving things around. G On Tue, Jan 21, 2014 at 4:32 PM, Martin Pinkston martinpinks...@gmail.comwrote: Sunday when we were moving, I dropped off an old dialysis machine for hacking. There is another one at my house waiting for me to get loaded onto the truck and drop this one off as well. In order to allow these into the hacking space, I have agreed to disable them from ever being used as a dialysis machine again. This is due to some liability issues with the company I work for. I may have two more machines available in the near future. It just depends. However, there are a couple of things I would like to do with some of the parts I have removed. Each machine has 3 small stepper motors, just like the ones on the 3-D printer. Each printer takes 4. The machines also have 4 out runner motors which are the size that 600 size RC helicopters are using. The first thing I would like to do is make a 3-D printer. The second thing I would like to do is make a quad copter with the out runner motors. I am curious if any one else might be interested in also building a 3-D printer as maybe a group project; meaning, each person in the group is actually building a 3-D printer. So if there are 4 of us in this group, there will be four 3-D printer completed and running at the end of the project. And the same would be true of the Quad copter project group. More importantly, my wife has a number of health issues. Any time anyone in the house gets sick, she is inevitably sick for 2-3 times as long. Except for once a year, when I have my abbreviated case of the flu. She never has any symptoms. We get our flu shots together every year. Also that's a good suggestion to not expose other people to yourself if you have symptoms. Re: [SH-Discuss] Short term and mid term plans
On my blog at gsvolt.wordpress.com you can view Doug's talk on 3D printing that he gave earlier this year.. feel free to cite it. I think he pretty eloquently captured the state of 3D printing.. its still valid. We have one gorilla face sample that you can borrow for the talk to show people what a print looks like. I would say if you can pair with Andy, it would help to witness the process of 3D printing first hand and then start to write your speech for toastmasters that would be better. It would be cool to share with attendees the vocabulary of words used in 3D printing.. which most 3D print users use frequently-after all you deliver great speech by knowing great words ;) Regards, G On Dec 23, 2013 9:38 PM, tmazan...@juno.com tmazan...@juno.com wrote: I figure 3D printing is about 40 years behind computing in transforming society. I enjoyed the Computer Revolution, and I look forward to having that fun again. In the near term, I am a member of Toastmasters. I would like my next speech to be a speech to inform about 3D printing. Is there any advice or tips on speaking to groups unfamiliar with 3D printing about the topic? For example, is there an easy way for me to get ahold of an item that was 3D printed? In the mid term, I learned about computers in the Seventies by first reading about them (I have several books on 3D printing on my Kindle, with 3D Printing for Dummies pre-ordered) and then joining the Computer Club at CWRU to get experience before I bought my Apple ][+. So that might be a good way for me experience 3D printing. I posted a thread on a 3D printing forum and they directed me to you. Thank you for any help.
