[DX-CHAT] Major DX?? or Not??
Sun Will Flip Its Magnetic Field Soon The sun is gearing up for a major solar flip, NASA says.In an event that occurs once every 11 years, the magnetic field of the sun will change its polarity in a matter of months, according new observations by NASA-supported observatories. The flipping of the sun's magnetic field marks the peak of the star's 11-year solar cycle and the halfway point in the sun's solar maximum — the peak of its solar weather cycle. It looks like we're no more than three to four months away from a complete field reversal, Todd Hoeksema, the director of Stanford University's Wilcox Solar Observatory, said in a statement. This change will have ripple effects throughout the solar system. As the field shifts, the current sheet — a surface that radiates billions of kilometers outward from the sun's equator — becomes very wavy, NASA officials said. Earth orbits the sun, dipping in and out of the waves of the current sheet. The transition from a wave to a dip can create stormy space weather around Earth, NASA officials said. --- To unsubscribe or subscribe to this list. [DX-CHAT] Fwd: [IOTA-chasers] HQ8D - NA223 info
Just received word that Dan is leaving Swan Island today and heading straight for Vivorillos NA-223. This is a bit of a deviation from the original plans, but as we all know his travel is dependant on the Honduran Navy's schedule. With these changes Dan is only going to be able to take one antenna, so he will most likely be active on either 20m or 15m. As it stands right now he will be on Vivorillos for 1 or 2 days only. This will be a disappointment to a lot of people, however he is at the mercy of the Honduran Navy for transportation and their needs come first. Dan will then return to Swan Island but not sure how long he will be there. Hopefully he will get a little more operating time before he has to return to main land Honduras. Re: [DX-CHAT] QSL from Palestine
A few weeks ago I sent a (first) paypal request to Vlad for 6 band su9vb contacts and a separate request for 4o7vb, 4w0vb and e40vb. I always put a summary of contact info in the message field. The reply cards for the 4w, e4 and 4o came from Texas (his xyl?) within 2 weeks (March), but no reply for the su9. Without any further inquiry from me, he emailed me to ask if I had the su9 cards, and when I said they had not arrived, he wrote back to say he was re-sending them on his dime, and indeed they arrived last week, along with un/ua4whx and hc2/ua4whx which I then asked to have included. Perhaps there is a mail issue to prompt him to ask me (and you, Mark) to ask if the cards have arrived. Vlad's QSLing has been 100% for me. And the card's photography makes it worth getting them all, IMO. The images capture an essence of local life in the places he visited. 73 Bob k2euh Mark Robinson mark...@mindspring.com wrote: MessageHe e-mailed me to see if I had my card. I'm replying to this on DX-CHAT. A lot of those excellent ops are no longer with us. For whatever else he got involved in, Don Miller was one of the best CW ops ever and could sit there and churn out QSO's as you describe. So could Danny Weil, the Colvins, Ron ZL1AMO, Rudi DJ5CQ, G3SWH, Baldur DJ6SI, and many others. Many of these are now Silent Keys and I haven't heard too much lately from some of the others. I have noticed some of the same things in pileups lately. There was a discussion on another list about DXpeditions now using Skimmer to identify stations in the pileups. I have nothing against using technology to augment skill, but if technology replaces skill altogether, it will not be good. 73, Zack W9SZ On Thu, Apr 18, 2013 at 10:30 AM, ragnar otterstad la...@yahoo.no wrote: Food for thought ! With the odd exception, all l hear now is an operator that is like a rabbit caught in a car's headlights, hopelessly trawling across 15-20KHz of a boiling pileup for 30-40 seconds before managing to extract a two letter fragment of a call sign, throw it back at the pileup with 599 tacked on the end, fully expecting this to result in a QSO. Then throw in a few time saving tricks such as sending at 40wpm, with a speeded up RST, only sending his call every 15 minutes, sending dit dit where clearly a TU DX1DX UP is needed, abandoning QSOs halfway through, not confirming a queried call correction, insisting on working an area to which there is no propagation on the strength of working one superstation there, working by numbers etc etc. What a mess! The result?... a situation where only the Loud, Lucky and the continuous calling Lid prosper. It seems the quality of an operation is now judged by the speed the QSOs can be uploaded to LOTW, Clublog or the like, rather than the skill of the operator. Perhaps a small scale operation from a less needed entity, or a few hours using Pileup runner would give these guys an idea what to expect before launching themselves off to a rare one. Hello Rag. I'm glad to see that you can still stir things up old friend! I feel that I must add one more thought to what was already commented on. Remember that those were the days long before the technologies mentioned. Many of these operators were able to send with a BUG with either hand while keeping PAPER logs going with the other. Also, the QSLs were filled out by hand too. I laugh at the comment concerning Fred Astaire that Ginger Rogers once made. I did everything that Fred did. [DX-CHAT] Rotor Question
I recently had a failure of my T2X. It would stick on a particular NE heading. I pulled it down yesterday and found The ring gear teeth were sheared off underneath where it has the protruding section that will actuate the limit switch arm continued CW from there. Was it just a coincidence that it happened in that area or do the teeth just happen to be weaker there for some reason? For those that have lost ring gear teeth, has that been a common area where it happened? This corresponded to the heading of NE. Have the same question into Norm's Rotor Service. I'm prepared to replace the ring gear but curious as to why this happened the way it did. An inspection of the rotor revealed no other apparent issues. [DX-CHAT] Digital
I took a 1st phone course from NRI back in 1965 and took two courses in electronics from the physics department at UNC at Chapel Hill in 1966 and 1967. There was some things we learned about ones and zeros back then, but that was over 40 years ago. I worked in broadcasting until 1984, but everything was analog. It seems to me that if we can put 80 minutes of high fidelity stereo music on a compact disk, a whole movie on a DVD, and three seperate channels of digital TV on one previously analog channel, we should be able to transmit high fidelity and qrm free phone signals on the ham bands. I wish one of you digital Geeks would invent something like that for amateur radio. I know CW and psk, etc is called digital, but it seems to me that someone who has more training than me could come up with something better. In a pile-up the receiver could lock on one digital signal that was the strongest. Or, you would have a spectrum like is on digipan and you could click your mouse on the signal and copy it. Why not? RE: [DX-CHAT] LOTW cannot possibly catch up
To anyone that has studied IT, Project Management, or any other topic management topic know it's all about time, cost, and scope. This can be that most greatest system it the world but it's getting to cost $$$ and take some time. So therefore the ARRL should charge the users the required cost ... SO PROBLEM SOLVED !! 73, W2CF Richard T. Schweizer 377 Canterbury Dr. Ramsey, NJ 07446 Telephone: (201) 825-4318 From: wn3...@verizon.net To: dx-chat@njdxa.org Subject: RE: [DX-CHAT] LOTW cannot possibly catch up Date: Sat, 15 Dec 2012 18:56:42 -0500 Blaming the ARRL IT staff for the problem is pointless. I've dealt with them in the past on issues. They are doing the best they can with what resources they have been given. To use a poor analogy: This is akin to blaming the ditch digger for using a shovel, when a backhoe would be faster. The ditch digger would rather have a backhoe as well, but it's all he was issued. Or, it's akin to blaming the line crew working on a downed power line for taking 2 hours to arrive instead of 15 minutes, when it was the power company's management that consolidated the local maintenance garages into one central one 25 miles away, and then reduced the staff levels due to redundancy and efficiency. As I have said here and elsewhere: If you don't like the situation -- and I don't like it either -- complaining here is pointless. If you are an ARRL member, complain to your Division Director. The Division Directors make up the ARRL Board, and they are SUPPOSED to listen to the membership -- that's us, and remember, WE are the League, not the Board, not the HQ staff, but US, the members. If we don't tell them we're concerned, and that we want something done... nothing will happen. Further, considering that in the recent past... -- the design bug has been discovered and fixed, so no more mysterious loss of logs -- the update process is now more transparent, as new tools are available to track upload processing -- new hardware is on order -- the Trusted QSL open source project is being reopened (that's the programming that is at least part of the LotW system), and C++ developers are being sought to help -- and if you don't believe me on that or you didn't get the email, just ask AA6YQ ... I'd say that the Directors ARE hearing our concerns, and that they ARE telling the HQ staff to devote more resources to the system, and that things ARE moving along. Maybe not as fast as we want, but they ARE in progress. It may not be ideal. It's a start. So insulting the people in the trenches working on the system does little to no good. Kvetching about things here may blow off steam make you feel better, but does little good. You want something done? Contact your Division Director. [DX-CHAT] ZK2C - OQRS
I really believe that the OQRS system is a real benefit for getting QSL's from major DXpeditions. I am sure it is much easier for the DXped QSL managers and provides a small donation to the group . It has worked very well for me on all previous DXped's. It is, however, only as good as the manager's running the program. I had been told that the ZK2C OQRS cards came out quite a while ago, but I had received nothing here. I have the receipt number from PayPal so I know they got my funds and request. I finally sent an email to DL7JAN and he said his records indicated he had sent mine, but he would send another. After many weeks of waiting and not receiving anything, I sent another email and he answered that he was pretty sure he had sent it. I waited additional weeks and still nothing came. My last 2 emails have been ignored. Has anyone had a similar experience on OQRS for this operation?? I guess another option would be to contact PayPal and tell them I received nothing for the fee that I paid. Not sure what that would accomplish other than letting them know that this person doesn't deliver on what he has been paid for. I am out over $4 USD now and got nothing. Re: [DX-CHAT] LOTW cannot possibly catch up
LOTW even at 20 days is a tremendous tool. I'm not concerned about 20 days for a confirmation. My concern is 20 days (or more) even before the initial transaction is processed and I get confirmation that the QSOs are safely in the database. I'm confident they'll figure this out, it's probably not a hardware issue only, but the database bogging down under the mountain of data. I'm confident that it's not a hardware issue - the same hardware could process 100 QSOs/minute when LotW first went online according to info I've received privately from those who were there at the time. I would bet the storage hardware has not been properly maintained and tuned as the application changed. New storage hardware is a band-aid ... nothing more. LotW will have gone from 200 million QSO records in January 2009 to more than 470 million by the end of this year - that's over 3,000 QSOs/per hour. In the last 19 days more than 4.6 million new QSO records have been added to the database - that's more than 191,000 per day (3,200/hr). Now if LotW did not have a problem with 3,000 QSO/s per hour average (other than an occasional one or two day backlog around CQWW and ARRL DX) why does it suddenly have a 20 day delay? The issue is that ARRL's IT department and management have ignored the warning signs. Work should have been in full swing for some time to upgrade the entire program - not just a storage subsystem on an emergency basis and patch the tQSL interface - with something designed to handle the size and scope of a modern LotW. As it is, Newington still seems to have its collective head buried in the sand. 73, ... The are currently at 10+ days - at THAT rate, we will be at 18 days for a file that is uploaded today, by that time, we'll be at 36 days. If things are not fixed, in 2-3 months, the backlog will be LONGER than your 3 months to get a card back The issue is not even that. I don't know if you are in the software business, I am, and a lot of people who are worried are also. We are seeing the symptoms of a system that is in distress and in danger of failure. We know that these kinds of problems are NOT usually a simple fix, and even if it is, there is significant testing needed. The time to call for the ARRL to fix the problem is before the system fails. Think of it like the STS Challenger - the engineers were watching the O rings, and were saying 'there are problems, that seem to get worse at low temps, but management kept saying 'no problem'. The trick is to SEE the problem BEFORE the system totally melts down This is the system showing a cough, and maybe if we do something now, we can save it before it dies, instead of waiting for it to turn to pneumonia and dyeing --- To unsubscribe or subscribe to this list. RE: [DX-CHAT] LOTW cannot possibly catch up
Every transaction-oriented software system has a performance bottleneck that limits its throughput. Eliminating that bottleneck -- either by improving the software or upgrading the hardware -- always reveals the next bottleneck. The ARRL has determined that LotW's throughput is limited by the rate at which new QSOs can be inserted into the database, and has ordered a new storage subsystem to eliminate this bottleneck. This step is necessary, but may or may not be sufficient; we should know in 4-6 weeks. At present, ~50% of the QSOs uploaded to LotW are duplicates. There are several practical ways to reduce the load that these duplicates impose on LotW without imposing onerous requirements on users; at least one of them will be implemented. The ARRL is now providing daily LotW status updates and hourly LotW Queue Length updates, a level of transparency we have long sought and should further encourage. Cynical, sarcastic, non-constructive posts second-guessing the ARRL's course of action are not the best way to accomplish this. I am not suggesting that anyone back off on expressing their interest in seeing LotW restored to reliable service. The constructive message to send to ARRL management and representatives is this: I'm glad that ARRL management is finally attending to LotW and hope that this first step is sufficient; but if it's not, I expect them to waste no time in taking the follow-on actions required to bring LotW to an acceptable level of throughput and reliability, keeping the user community abreast of their efforts. 73, Dave, AA6YQ --- To unsubscribe or subscribe to this list. RE: [DX-CHAT] Re: LOTW cannot possibly catch up
Don, I've been reading comments on the LotW situation for several weeks now -- on this reflector, on other email reflectors, and in the online forums for several web sites. Based on that overall picture, I think we can group the critical comments into two categories: The first category concerns comments from those who are generally interested in getting the situation resolved. That includes users with and without an IT background, many of whom understand the issues regarding a worldwide database application of this magnitude, and how difficult (and expensive) the management of such a system can be -- to say nothing of the fixes when something goes kaflooey. I consider this category the constructive comments. The second category concerns comments from those who actually don't care about LotW. Most of these are from people who have a grudge against the ARRL in particular and/or other amateur radio groups or societies in general. Some of these people are simply being ornery curmudgeons just they can be (or because they like, for some twisted reason, to stir up trouble for others). Many of the comments from this group, when you step back and look at them overall, show a lack of understanding (or an unwillingness to care) about the situation in general or in specifics. Many of the comments become contradictory; that is to say, they answer another's comment solely to further their agenda at the moment, and/or smear LotW and/or ARRL, regardless of what they said in the past -- be it a month ago, a week ago, or 10 minutes ago. I consider this category destructive comments. I have no problem with the constructive comments. I may not agree with someone, but I respect them for saying it. These comments are from people who genuinely want to get the situation fixed -- both for the moment and for good. Now as far as the destructive comments, I am sure that I'm not the only one who would like to tell this small group to Shut The Front Door. These comments are not helping. They are sowing confusion, misleading conclusions, and in general are raising the background noise without improving the Signal to Noise ratio. So... those who truly wish to assist or are truly concerned about fixing the problem, please continue to post. As far as the other group goes... your displeasure has been duly noted. Thank you. Now: let the rest of us work on the issues without further distractions. 73, ron w3wn Note: Just speaking for myself. RE: [DX-CHAT] LOTW cannot possibly catch up
Blaming the ARRL IT staff for the problem is pointless. And keep contacting him (or her). 73, ron w3wn -Original Message- From: kf...@njdxa.org [mailto:kf...@njdxa.org] On Behalf Of Joe Subich, W4TV Sent: Saturday, December 15, 2012 4:18 PM To: w...@suddenlink.net Cc: Dx-Chat Subject: Re: [DX-CHAT] LOTW cannot possibly catch up SO, please let me ask; what do the complainers expect to accomplish by continuing to kick this horse? Barry, The reported backlog is simply the time between upload of the last processed file and the reporting epoch. It is a backward looking statistic and not predictive. If you want predictive, look at the number of QSOs in the queue - which continues to increase - and apply an value for processing rate derived from the QSOs/time watching the home page or calculated based on processing time for some of the uploads in your activity from your own account. I use a factor of 360 QSOs/minute which makes the predictive delay for new uploads about 25,000 minutes or 17 days, 6 hours. 73, ... Re: Re: [DX-CHAT] LOTW cannot possibly catch up
That's correct, Ron. You complain about it to your division director, who will speak on your behalf. But there's nothing wrong with discussing it here, IMO. Maybe they DO read things here... I work in web technology for a living, and you know what? Sometimes I do go searching the web for things that people are complaining about our sites. Sometimes I even get requests from others working with me, where people are complaining in various other places about little things. Social sites such as Twitter and Facebook are especially useful for this. It's not the preferred method but sometimes it gathers the right attention, and I think people speak more freely this way instead of when the complain directly to you. As for hardware fixing the problem, based on my past experience, I don't think it will make much difference unless they were running 10 year old hardware, or someone's old recycled PC. I literally shook my head when they said they thought that replacing spinning iron with solid state drives would help significantly. I personally think that's not going to work. But I could be wrong, so let's hope it works. But from other places I gather that they are doing something on the software front as well, so we'll see what they do. 73 Ryan, N2RJ On Fri, Dec 14, 2012 at 12:11 PM, Ron Notarius W3WN wn3...@verizon.net wrote: No Ryan, the League is not a dictatorship. Re: [DX-CHAT] Re: [SPAM]Re: [DX-NEWS] Best Practices for DXpedition Operating
Hi, When working from home I am using a low profile station now: 100W and LongWire. But I noticed many times that if I can't work a DXpedition it is not a problem that I have no enough output power and they can't hear me. Very often it mean rather that oters have too much output power. It is sometimes nice to have skimmer or cluster spots but too often they are used insted of using VFO and listening. I was lucky to start DXing when I had no access to a cluster. I was using my VFO to find a pile-up. Next I was listening to find what is the DX call and learn the operating style of the DX. More about skimmers and clusters... Some time ago during one of the CQWW SSB events a friend of mine made a simple trick. He spotted himself on the cluster using a dummy, not real callsign however that call was a rare multiplier. Right after sending the spot, he heard stations calling the dummy call on the spotted frequency. So he started to operate giving contest reports but he had never sent the call. He was called by several dozen of stations. Next he disappeared from the QRG. After the contest he checked the 3830 and found many of his correspondents claiming the score as Unassisted. 73 SP5UAF -Oryginalna wiadomość- From: Barry Sent: Wednesday, December 12, 2012 3:46 PM To: rjai...@gmail.com ; Dx-Chat Subject: [DX-CHAT] Re: [SPAM]Re: [DX-NEWS] Best Practices for DXpedition Operating As a former big gun in a good location, now a little pistol in a bad location, I can say I find the current state of DXing very discouraging. The leaderboard thing isn't all that bad *IF* the DX wants to allow it and encourages it. If you're running an operation like HK0NA, 7O6T or T32C -- big, loud and there for a long time, I don't see the harm in it. Some operations are looking for a new DXpedition record. On the other hand, a couple of guys on rocks off the Brazilian coast may not want that level of activity. But it's up to the DXpedition leaders to set forth the goals and communicate them to the world before and during the operation. I'm a big greenie-hunter. I like fighting pileups and I'm glad the Clublog structure is there. But with that said, I *do* see the downsides and I would implore both Clublog and DXpedition leaders to come up with a way to show contacts but not a full matrix if that's the wish of a DXpedition. If I had a say in a big DXpedition, I'd welcome all comers on all bands, but if It was just me and a couple of buddies heading off to a less-common entity in the Pacific or Asia, I wouldn't want that same goal. [DX-CHAT] Best Practices for DXpedition Operating
First of all i don't like the way leaderboard works. The leaderboards help activity of big pistols who want to satisfy their ego and they work a dxpedition agn and agn even they have worked agn in all modes and bands that country. But i don't think clublog blames on it. Clublog does a perfect job, it helps all of us with propagation, online logs, etc and it is finally a very useful tool. We are the problem when we don't use as it should. It's about the same when ARRL introduced dxcc challenge. Now is tougher to work a dxpedition than before challenge. And maybe was similar when they introduced dxcc modes... If ARRL makes a dxcc blabla where we must work 3000 entities in several modes and several bands... then all will be ok? It will make more difficult a little pistol to catch a new one. The other way it is sure that if a dxpedition selects a different approach on leaderboards, the activity will be reduced. Maybe a solution is Clublog publices the number of unique calls worked and not the number of qsos. This will be a motive for the dxpeditioners. But i insist that the problem, first of all is our ego... Let's try to see our hobby in a different way... -- 73...Kostas, SV1DPI --- To unsubscribe or subscribe to this list. Re: [DX-CHAT] A new entity?
It is moot as far as DXCC is concerned - San Andres and Providencia (the Colombian San Andres Province) are already a separate entity (HK0-S) for DXCC. Although the decision impacts maritime rights it does not appear to involve a change in control of any land area (islands or cays). From the article: Based on evidence presented by lawyers for both nations, Colombia and not Nicaragua has sovereignty over the islands, the court's President Peter Tomka told delegations from both sides. There is certainly not 800 km separating the four smaller islands from the rest of the archipelago. Since there is no intervening Nicaraguan *land*, the intervening land or islands language in rule 2 b) iii is not applicable. 73, ... A35 isn't really all that rare. They're not even in the top 100 and they show up in the major contests. So I would say find someone else to work. You might even get LoTW. Some of the comments aren't very nice. DXINFO DB show an address in Tonga, but that was updated in 2002. It may no longer be accurate.
