I think I'd like to see Ultimatic mode too, I'm thinking I'll have to
learn Iambic though, because most rigs don't support Ultimatic.

But Ultimatic does sound like the easier and frankly, more logical mode.

Maybe I'll have to borrow a friends keyer to give it a try.

I have been asking periodically that the Elecraft built-in keyers

[Elecraft] K2 Mods

2008-08-17 Thread DW Holtman
Hello,

I finally got around to installing the CW LED tuning indicator by Tom Hammond
N0SS. It works great, I should have put it in way back when, upon completion of
the K2. It is both sensitive to weak signals and selective.

Next I'm thinking about putting the Fixed Audio Output for digital modes
created by Don Wilhelm W3FPR. It looks very well designed. Don has put a lot of
time and effort into this project to design, build and document so everyone can
read and understand it. Have many put this in and are you happy with the
results? I'm a little nervous about drilling holes in the back panel.

Don also has a another project on his very informative web page. This is a
switch box to make the connections from Digital modes to SSB without unplugging
cables and changing the compression settings on the SSB Board. Has anyone built
this and how do you like it? Would it be possible to combine the two. So a
fixed audio would be applied to the mic plug to use in the switch box? This
would also eleminate drilling the back panel?

I did not know if I should send this to Don, since he is the expert on most
things related to the K2. But, I thought I would send it to the group for any
ideas and hopefully Don will let everyone know what he thinks.

[Elecraft] What is up with this?

2008-05-14 Thread DW Holtman

I had a ton of problems with two K2s and sent two or three a day for over a

It was truly outstanding. Both of my rigs are up and running.

Subject: [Elecraft] K2: Low 8V, and adjusting AGC and S-meter

Hi:

My K2 #6425 was ordered in February and is now fully operational, with
almost all measurements and checks within limits. The only issue is the
output of the 8V regulator, which is at 7.56V (5.5% down from the nominal
8V). If I am right, this low voltage is the cause for...

a) AGC threshold adjustment: U2 pin 5 voltage only goes up to 3.62V, not
3.80V;
b) S-meter adjustment: Can never get S-meter LED below #2 or above #9 to
turn on.

I had to order some spare parts from Elecraft, and to be safe I asked them
also to send me a tested replacement for the 8V regulator - which is on
the

way.

My questions are...
- Wouldn't the low 8V level be the cause of the above symptoms (a) and
(b)?

- Any reason I should or should not replace that 8V regulator, anyway?

[Elecraft] XV50 question

2008-04-30 Thread DW Holtman
Hello,

I finally finished my XV50, got it debugged and working. Now there is one more
problem/question.

I setting up the configuration, I set the low power out of the K60XV to 1.0 MW.
When I have everything connected, and operating, the display shows that the K2
is only putting our about 0.3 MW instead of 1.0 MW. Is this adjustable? It will
only allow about 8 or 9 watts out of the XV50 instead of 20 Watts, with
everything properly aligned.

Thank you for your help.

With respect, I don't think it's off-topic:

The list moderator, Eric, as repeatedly said that anything to do with
getting on the air and operating on the Ham bands is *on topic* for this

has always been welcome. That has certainly been the case over the eight

Some topics take on a life of their own and start going around in circles,
and in those cases Eric will, eventually, call a halt to it. And he's quick

I agree with you, Brian; such discussions can be WAY useful too which I
why I read them, sometimes participate in them, and always appreciate that
they are welcome here.

Does anyone have experience, or even comparison on these or others that

[Elecraft] RS-232 Question

2008-04-19 Thread DW Holtman
Hello,

I have hooked up an old computer out in my shop. I made some cables and I'm in
the process of trying to talk to my K2 via the computer. I have a KPA100 in the
K2. The software I'm using is the K2 remote from the Elecraft web page. I have
set it for comm port1 (the only port available on the computer) and get a
message that no K2 can be found.

I have ohmed the cables and think they are good. They also have connectors for
a KAT100 (which is backordered) and a XV50 (which I'm having other problems).
So the only thing connected is the K2 and the computer.

Is there an easy way to determine if the problem is in the KPA100, the cables
or the computer?

Thank you in advance for any help.

[Elecraft] Question on using the XV50 with a K2

2008-04-10 Thread DW Holtman
Hello,

I have a couple of questions I hope someone can help me with. My XV50 is almost
built. I have not put power to it yet.

Reading the Owners Manual I don't really understand the best way to hook up
both an HF and a 6 Meter antenna. I do not have the K60XV. It says that the
Transverter turns on when the Band+ or the Band- are selected. I assume this
means the XV50 will turn on when 10 meters is selected with the K2? What If I
wanted to operate 10 Meters? Do I turn the XV50 off manually?

The manual stated not to use an antenna relay to switch between an HF and the 6
Meter antenna? I guess this also includes a manual antenna switch which are
more lossy than a good quality antenna relay? What option is left, unscrewing
the antenna at the back of the K2 when operating HF?

How are some others using the XV50 with a K2. I'm also going to wire in a
KAT100 and my K2 has the 100 watt option.

Thank you in advance for any help.

how to use Widows Xp some of their call center staff. There was a huge
amount of angst over what problems Xp might cause. Drivers were near the top
of the list of concerns.

That was a long time ago in the lifespan of most technology. And Xp has a
number of years of Microsoft support ahead of it on current systems, such as
the one I'm using now. Even after that, it'll live on. I've got one machine

Hello,

Thank you for all of the great responses I have received.

The copy is not an OEM specifically for one machine. I'm not trying to use

I have spent the last couple of hours Googling for information on Ubuntu.
Since this PC will only be used in my shack for radio stuff, I'm going to
load Ubuntu and forget about Microsoft (like getting a 600 pound gorilla

logging programs etc are available for download. It looks like a good way to

2008-04-02 Thread DW Holtman

Hello,

Another inexpensive simple to install 6 meter ground plane is located here.

http://arrowantennas.com/?merchant_return_link=Return+to+Arrow+Antenna

EHam reviews of this antenna are here

Start with a 5/8 vertical or a 2 or 3 ele yagi as you suggest,
polarisation can be all over the place.

Lots of SSB 50.1 - 50.2 and CW 50.08 - 50.1 (-ish).

Hello,

I'm doing the next best thing. I just ordered a 6 Meter transverter (XV-50)

Yes, Dave, you can rest assured that there are many present and
near-future K3 owners waiting with bated breatrh for this year's
sporadic-E season to start. Where you are in AZ, monitor 50125 kHz for
occasional early bird openings starting around mid-April; the main
event gets going around May 15 and lasts through August 15, typically. If
you have never experienced a 6-meter sporadic-E season, you're in for a
real fun (and probably addictive) experience!

And get that 1.8 kHz roofing filter ready for the ARRL and CQ VHF contests
in June/July. If the band is open, you'll need it!

6 meters for the time being,

but Jim assures me that things should start happening on that band
pretty soon. So, now is the time to get ready. In the meantime, I
plan to put this thing up in the air a little bit, and see what I
might hear. It may only be locals, but even that should work out
better than with my R8 (which does cover 6 meters) since the Moxon
will be horizontally polarized. That seems to be the choice among
folks around here.

[Elecraft] K2 100 Watt Pa Problem

2008-03-30 Thread DW Holtman

Hello,

I was wondering if anyone else has had a problem like ythis one?

I'm was in the process of finishing up my KPA 100. All of the power supply,
bias adjustments etc went as per the book. When I got to page 50 in the
manual to test the transmitter at high power the problem shows up.

With the Power out turned to around 11 watts, the relay clicks and the power
out is taken over by the KPA 100. Every thing works great until I get to
right at 20 watts. Any power level 20 watts or over, when it is keyed, a
relay klicks, power out shuts off and nothing out. At 18 watts the power out
from the KPA 100 is fine. There are no error messages that I can find, even
on the secondary message menus.

Any suggestions why the PA works up to 20 watts then shuts down with no
error message?

I just ordered the new KXV3 RXA board for my K3. The instructions state
requirements for the soldering station to be used in the installation of the

consequently I do not own a soldering station. I have several assorted
soldering irons and guns that have served me well in the past but I guess I
will have to join the modern world. Since I would like to keep updating my
K3 it looks like I will need to buy a soldering station. In looking through

absolutely necessary to spend that much to ensure the safety of my radio or

That mod is one of the easiest in terms of soldering. You are soldering two
fine wires to closely-spaced connector terminals that, if overheated, will
melt the connector header or lift traces. But it's not nearly as critical as
many component installations in other locations. Two more leads are
connected to BNC connector terminals that require significant heat in any
case. The RXA board comes with the leads pre-attached, so there's no
soldering to do to the RXA board itself.

It's a judgment call. Elecraft wants you to be successful and your chance of
having trouble is greatly reduced by using the right tools, and a good
soldering station is a tool you'll use again and again if you do any work on
your rigs.

You can get away with less. I've repaired a lot of SMD circuit boards
sitting cross-legged on the deck in the navigating bridge of a ship using a
portable butane-powered soldering iron while holding a flashlight in my
teeth.

I've also had lots and lots of practice over decades of soldering that lets
me judge the temperature of the tip by the smell and, by being very, very
careful, I've yet to destroy a board or parts. I did have the advantage of
growing up with the pc board industry, first working on boards back in the
1960s that had large push-in pins to which leads were soldered, then boards
with big thick, wide traces that have slowly evolved into the tissue-thin,
tiny traces we find on many boards today.

Even so, whenever possible I'll use a temperature-controlled soldering
station in a comfortable, well-lit shop.

Over time, I've found that a good soldering station costs me pennies a month
to own and use. I don't consider that too much to spend to protect circuit
boards, almost any one of which is worth more than the iron.

I currently have a Hakko 936 that cost me less than $100 several years ago
from www.tequipment.net.

Bottom line, it's a matter of how skilled you are at soldering and how much
risk you are comfortable taking with the pc board and components.

Re: [Elecraft] K2 100 Watt Pa Problem

2008-03-30 Thread DW Holtman

Hello,

I want to thank Matt, W6NLA, Robie - AJ4F and Mike AI4NS for their inputs.
They all three hit the nail on the head.

I was using an Astron linear 35 amp supply. I bought in recently on Ebay,
and assumed it worked, because it reads 13.8VDC with no load. I hooked up a
20 Amp Astron and it no longer trips. Guess I will be looking for a
schematic diagram for an Astron RS-35A Power supply. I also was feeding the
RS-35A through an MFJ 1118 outlet box. I might have to take a good look at
it too.

Now I have a different problem. It stays up and transmits, but only puts out
about 23 watts. The Power Supply is reading 13.6VDC at 23 watts, that is not
the problem. The LCD shows the correct power at 23 watts (even though the
power level pot is set for anywhere from 25 to 100 Watts) and a 1.0 to 1
SWR. I'm transmitting into an MFJ tuner in the dummy load switch position.

I think this might be something I did wrong with the set-up. I'm going to go
through the whole set up again step by step.

Thanks again to a fine group on this forum.

You might want to make sure your power supply isn't doing its foldback
or current limiting thing. If it is, symptoms you've described
should repeat 100% of the time.

In fact I pretty much put my K2 on the shelf after putting in the KDSP2.

[Elecraft] K2 Troubleshooting question

2008-03-26 Thread DW Holtman

Hello,

Last night I was working on an older K2 S/N 02XX. I was going to install a
SSB module and a RS232 adapter that I bought from a forum member. I
installed the SSB with no problems. When I installed the RS232 adapter and
turned it on, I got an error message (080) I think), I quickly turned it off
and removed the RS232 interface.

Now there is no receive audio except when I select the menu. Also the S
Meter bar graph completely quit working. If I have the menu selected, it
receives. As soon as I hit menu again and the frequency is displayed, no
receive audio. I hooked a scope to R17 on the control board, the mute line.
It goes high when menu is selected and I can hear the receive audio.

Anybody ever seen something like this?

Thank you in advance.

anyone have any recommendations for a full size pair in the $50.00 range?

I'm no where near as pleased with the ER6's as I am the 4's. The 6's
are a lot bigger and a bit cumbersome and no one that I know of will
make a full ear mold of them.

As far as the mic I use a Heil GM4 and a Heil Boom.

250 is pretty cheap. I paid more than that when you add up

still in pretty much all of the monitors I've listened to the
Etymotics are about as antiseptic as I've found.

The performance ratings of the ER6P is only slightly lower
than the ER4P, isolation is similar and they can be found
for $80 at many places on the web. If you want maximum sound
isolation, choose the ER6i (it has the three flange tips vs.
2 flange tips with the ER4P and ER6P).

The only problem with the ER4/ER6 is there is no place for
the (headset) mic G.

I just ordered me a pair on Ebay for $14.95 plus shipping. They should work

A decent pair of relatively inexpensive full size cans would be the
Sennheiser HD201. You'd probably be pretty happy with these.
Especially for communications use and you'll be able to get them for
under your $50 budget afer shipping.

Hello,

If you put a coat of India Ink, it will make Masonite conductive enough to
make a home brew ESD mat. It must them be grounded. This is according to a

I attached an aluminum yardstick to the front (also with double-sided

Re: [Elecraft] Excellent External Speaker for K2

2008-03-17 Thread DW Holtman

Hello,

I finished my base K2 about a week ago. I installed the Noise blanker and
SSB modules, with no problems. Next I installed the DSP module. The audio
quality went to Sh**. I spent two days playing around with filter
adjustments, DSP settings to no avail. Tonight I plugged in an external
speaker. Magic!! The distortion is gone, it sounds great. For some reason I
was using a headset until I put in the DSP module.

The internal speaker on the K2 is so bad, it is almost unusable. Unless the
one I have is defective. I have been having it sit side by side with my
TR-7, wondering why I ever bought a K2. Now with a working speaker, I know
why I bought a K2. It really is a very nice receiver.

[Elecraft] K2 Alignment question

2008-03-12 Thread DW Holtman
Hello,

My basic K2 is finally working and finished. I'm going to do the filter
alignment using Spectrograph and have a question. Does it make any difference
if I should do the procedure first for CW before installing the KSB2 option?
I'm guessing I need to make a cable from the headphone jack to the mic input on
my laptop to interface with the Spectrograph software?

[Elecraft] Question on K2 K3 100 Watt PA's

2008-03-10 Thread DW Holtman

Hello,

I have a question which might not make much sense. I have seen the Web links
to a couple of people who have remotely mounted a 100 watt amp from a K2
and an antenna tuner in an EC-2 enclosure.

Would it be possible to use the same remote amp/tuner to work with a K3? The
specs are basicly the same, ie 10 watts in, 100 watts out. It would savbe a
lot of $$$ if one remote amp/tuner could be used for two radios. I'm
thinking the communication to the amp would be the problem, but not sure.
Has this been brought up before?

Re: [Elecraft] K2 Assembly Question

2008-02-28 Thread DW Holtman

Hello,

I want to thank all of the help I received on this problem.

The AGC adjustment problem was solved by replacing the 8.0VDC regulator
with one that puts out 8.0 volts not 7.5 VDC..

I also had a problem where the MCU on the control board sometimes would not
start, it just froze and all controls were inop. I found an un-soldered
(surprise surprise) connection.

Not I have a new problem, and was wondering if anyone has any ideas.

As I started the alignment and test Part II. everything went fine until I
got to the 4th step on the left column on page 64. There is no output on the
left hand side of R-30.

I traced this back to U5 (I think) The voltage does not vary on pin 7 of U5
as the frequency is varied. It stays at VCC, 5 VDC. I think this changing DC
voltage must be there to make U4 and U6B operate to get the voltage on R-30.
Am I wrong on this, very little to no experience working on PLL
Synthesizers. All of the other voltages on U5 look good. Any suggestions on
where to go from here. The PLL reference oscillator is working, clean signal
at around 12.096 MHZ.

It might be a soldering problem, but I really do not think so, I have spent
a lot of time looking closely at solder joints. I will keep checking and
re-heating the solder joints.

Any suggestions on what to check would help.

Best,

Hello,

I have a couple of questions, hopefully some of the knowledgeable Elecraft

While doing the Alignment and test Part 1, I had a couple of readings that

1. Page 48, Setting the AGC Threshold, the manuals calls for adjusting
R-1 for a reading of 3.80VDC on pin 5 of U2. The highest R1 would adjust
to is 3.60VDC.

2. Page 48 Bargraph Current test. The manual calls for a current reading

Any suggestions? Are these readings anything to worry about?

Re: [Elecraft] K3-Latest K3 Review on EHAM

2008-02-24 Thread DW Holtman

Hello,

About a week ago, I asked the group what they thought about several bad
comments on E-Ham about SSB on the K2. I received a bunch of great E-Mail
telling me that it is probably an alignment problem. But, I also received
several E-Mails bordering on hate mail. It was strange to read some of the
responses I received. This rig almost has a cult type following by some of
the true believers.

I'm not saying there is anything wrong with really appreciating a quality
radio with an unheard of support from the factory. That is why I'm sold on
them. I know these rigs are the best money can buy, I operate a K1, in the
process of building a K2 and have a K3 on order. With this kind of support I
really hope Electraft does very well and continues to come out with products
of this quality.

[Elecraft] K2 Assembly Problems

2008-02-23 Thread DW Holtman
Hello,

I posted this a few days ago. I will cut and paste here again.

I'm in the middle of building a K2, S/N 6412.

While doing the Alignment and test Part 1, I had a couple of readings that
were not in specs.

1. Page 48, Setting the AGC Threshold, the manuals calls for adjusting R-1
for a reading of 3.80VDC on pin 5 of U2. The highest R1 would adjust to is
3.60VDC.

2. Page 48 Bargraph Current test. The manual calls for a current reading of
0.16 to 0.18. My K2 reads 0.25 amps. That is quite a bit higher than what is
called for.

I received suggestions to check the voltage on the 8 volt regulator in the
control board. It is just as suggested, the voltage is almost 1/2 volt low.
Will a 7808 work? Is it the same as a LM2930T-8? They both have the same NTE
cross reference and are available locally.

I finally got around to reassemble for alignment part II. Some times, when it
turns on, nothing happens, no display on the LCD, none of the controls do
anything. After I turn it off and on a couple of times, it starts working as it
is suppose to. This also happened in the first section for alignment where I
had the problems listed above, I thought it was the memory initializing. This
is not the case, it is still doing the same thing. Would the low 8 Volts cause
the MCU to hang up?

Thank you for your help.

Best,
DW Holtman

[Elecraft] K2 Assembly Question

2008-02-16 Thread DW Holtman
Hello,

Last Sunday (10 Feb) I ordered a K2, the great people at Elecraft shipped it
Monday. It arrived Wednesday (S/N 6412) and the assembly is under way.

Everything went smooth with the control Board. Everything was going great with
the Front Panel Board until I got to installing the Diffuser light for the LCD
display.

I posted the Errata sheet for page 28. The instructions are to install the
Diffuser 1/8 off the circuit board using the spacers provided.

The length of the leads from the LEDs in the Diffuser are 1/8, the same length
as the spacers. They cannot go into the hole on the Front panel Circuit board.
The new picture from the Errata sheet looks like it is just soldered without
any physical connection. Just sort of lumping solder to attach the Leads to the
pads on the Circuit board without going into the hole and soldering from the
back side of the circuit board?

Is this right? Trying to get a soldering iron under the diffuser to the pin on
the top of the board to solder it looks tough to do with out burning the
diffuser or the LED bar graph.

I put a short lead in each of the holes for the solder to slightly puddle
around. Than centered the diffuser and heated each lead from bottom of
board while adding slightly more solder. Than checked and it took well.
Don't want too large of a puddle, but enuff so diffuser leads get soldered.
I wouldn't solder right next to diffuser. I don't think it likes heat -
HI!

Have fun!

Subject: [Elecraft] K2 Assembly Question

Hello,

Last Sunday (10 Feb) I ordered a K2, the great people at Elecraft shipped
it Monday. It arrived Wednesday (S/N 6412) and the assembly is under way.

Everything went smooth with the control Board. Everything was going great
with the Front Panel Board until I got to installing the Diffuser light
for the LCD display.

I posted the Errata sheet for page 28. The instructions are to install the
Diffuser 1/8 off the circuit board using the spacers provided.

The length of the leads from the LEDs in the Diffuser are 1/8, the same
length as the spacers. They cannot go into the hole on the Front panel
Circuit board. The new picture from the Errata sheet looks like it is just
soldered without any physical connection. Just sort of lumping solder to
attach the Leads to the pads on the Circuit board without going into the
hole and soldering from the back side of the circuit board?

Is this right? Trying to get a soldering iron under the diffuser to the
pin on the top of the board to solder it looks tough to do with out
burning the diffuser or the LED bar graph.

Have I missed the boat on this?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

[Elecraft] UNPCBs

Hello,

Are these really necessary? Didn't Elecraft make the K2 to where additional

Should companies be able to mine information such as who ordered what from

2008-02-12 Thread DW Holtman

Hello,

After reading this informative and well thought out letter (see below), I
have a better understanding on the situation. The people mentioned in the
letter has been helping the Elecraft community for years, I'm new and should
not be so skeptical about what is going on until I have a better
understanding of the situation.

I'm going to order what I need in the way of UNPCBs. It should help adding
the 100 watt unit etc, after the basic testing has been done with the basic
K2 unit.

Thank to everyone for all of the inputs.

Hello DW,

There are a few people who are making things for the K2 that are
not provided by Elecraft that provide additional capabilities and
convenience - these are individuals, like Gary Hvizdak, Don Wilhelm,
Mike Phipps and Jack Smith, who don't sell a lot of their products and
don't make any significant profit from them either. You'll see them post
information about their products to the reflector, and occasionally, as
in Gary's case, send e-mail directly to someone who has just ordered a
K2 and not burden the entire list.

My K2 was built with Gary's UNPCBs, and now includes Don's fixed
audio output board (which he no longer as available but may be picked up
by Tom Hammond, N0SS), and which, among other things, I use to drive
Jack Smith's Z100 tuning indicator.

There are obviously differing opinions about the usefulness of
the UNPCBs. Don Wilhelm, who is a very experienced builder (and an
invaluable resource to all of us - he's helped me solve a number of
problems with my K2), has no problems removing and replacing components
- but some of us do. Even if you've ordered all of the K2 options you're
ever likely to install, you still need to build the basic K2 first and
calibrate and test it before adding the options. That means removing and
replacing components. I built by K2 with the UNPCBs several years ago
and then added options one at a time over the last few years. For me,
adding options were then really just plug-and-play, and I avoided the
dreaded unsoldering and replacing components. The UNPCBs had another
advantage when my K2 developed a problem that required the removal of
several of the options to trace down - all I had to do was plug the
UNPCBs back in, in place of the removed options. Without them, I would
have had to again unsolder, remove and replace some components. Don does
raise a good point with the UNPCBs in that installing the K60XV UNPCB
may cause calibration problems (if I did, I wasn't aware of it and my K2
seemed to work fine). But there appear to be no issues with the
remaining UNPCBs.

2008-02-08 Thread DW Holtman

Hello,

If you would have read the rest of the E-Mail, I commented that the majority

According to WB7SSN: I went to the E-ham web page
and read some of the reviews. There are a lot of
people who really do not think too much of
the K2. One or two might be some crack pot,
but there are a whole bunch of not happy users.
All of the magazine reviews seem to love it.

Comments on why the ratings have so many
unhappy K2 users?

I went to the eHam site, too. Here's what I observed.

The K2 has reviews in two categories under
Transceivers, HF.

The category K2 had
127 reviews, with an average rating of 4.9/5.0.
My review is one of those 127, currently on page 2.

The category, K2/100 had 73 reviews with an average
rating of 4.7/5.0.

Under the category QRP radios, there are 75 more
reviews of the K2, with an average score of 4.9/5.0.

Those numbers tell me there are a lot of very happy
owners/builders of the K2, and very few unhappy
K2 users. As far as the reasons that the few are less
than pleased, why not simply read the reviews for yourself?

Just cut and paste all reviews in those three places that
gave the K2 a less than perfect score of five. You won't
have much reading to do.

Hello,

First let me state, I was not trying to run down the K2. Just curious about
the reviews. I own a K1 and I'm on the waiting list for a K3. I would not
sit around and wait months for something if I did not think it is the best

Thank to most that responded both on and off list. The general feeling is if
someone is not happy with the SSB on the K2, it is most likely adjustment,
not the rig.

Great answers, I learned a lot about the K2.

[Elecraft] K3 gear

2008-01-29 Thread DW Holtman
Hello,

Does anyone have any experience with this headset and mic for sale on Ebay?

260174855278

The price is right, but don't know if it is any good. The Heil setup, I'm sure
will do the job. However I would like to look at other options. The only mics
in my shack are Drake 7077 for a TR-7 and a couple of Astatic mics a D-104 and
a 10-D. They work great on tube Collins gear, but I'm not too sure how it will
act on a K3. Any thoughts on the Astatic mics?

I'm coming out of the stone age in a way with a K3 when it gets here. All of my
test equipment is a generation or two newer tham the gear I repair. The K3 will
be my only rig less then 30 plus years old. It will be fun to play with.

A few of you have expressed grave disappointment that Elecraft has been
unable to predict future availability accurately. Some of you have even
suggested that this is part of some kind of nefarious plot. I assure you
it
is not. If you can not tolerate delays in the delivery of new technology,
I

urge you to vote with your checkbooks. Simply refrain from ordering these
new products, cancel your delayed orders if you must and, above all, hold
your tongues. This reflector is sponsored by Elecraft as a forum for
exchange of hints and kinks and a channel for both formal and informal
support. I find it amazing that they have not yet chosen to make it a
moderated forum where someone can censor the cheap shots that have,
frankly,
gotten out of hand. My Mom taught me If you can't say something nice,
don't

say anything at all. Of course, that advice does not hold universally but
in a public forum like an email reflector it should be a cardinal rule.
How

would you like it if someone posted billboards on your house announcing
every mistake you had ever made? What if some of them were inaccurate,
incorrect or marginally libelous? One of my mentors in business, a highly
decorated entrepreneur, media pundit and investor, taught his people to
Praise publicly, criticize privately. Please take that
advice.Thisreflector is one of the great things about Elecraft and I
urge you all to think
three times before posting criticisms: Is it true? Is it necessary? Is it
helpful? If the answer to any of these questions is no or maybe, be a
decent human being, give them the benefit of the doubt and don't post it.
Send email directly to Elecraft instead. They will read it and respond
appropriately.

Elecraft is a company, a collection of imperfect individuals trying hard
to
do as a team what no one person could do alone. They make mistakes as we
all
do. I have never seen another company so willing to admit their mistakes
and

inform their public. Yes, they have published some bad news. In fact, they
publish more bad news about product development delays than many companies
... because most companies don't publish bad news at all! Nor do they
provide a public forum where their failings can be discussed as easily as
their successes. I admire Elecraft and wish all my other vendors were as
candid. Heck, I wish any of my other vendors were as candid.

If you can't tolerate product delays, don't order new stuff. Don't order
anything unless it is available off the shelf. Given the vitriol of some
on

this reflector, I should advise them never to order anything without a
signed, custom contract of performance. They won't get such a contract
from

ham radio vendors but they won't be let down, either.

Elecraft has delivered a series of outstanding products and developed a
well-deserved reputation for technical excellence, product innovation and
the finest support in the amateur radio product business. The K3 is the
best

radio I have ever used, right now and despite lacking a few promised
features. In fact, I was able to say that six months ago when it had far
more rough edges than remain today. I, too, pine for the sub-receiver. I
even sold my FT-1000MP to make room for the K3, knowing full well that
until

the sub came out I was compromising my ability to work split-frequency DX
pileups. I can deal with that. If you can't, just wait.

But above all, please be civil. The Elecraft team are a handful of the
finest engineers, business people and human beings I have had the pleasure
to know. They do not always deliver their dreams on schedule but they
definitely do deliver and they deserve better treatment than some of you
are

dishing out on this reflector which they sponsor. The majority of
contributors to the reflector make me proud to be a customer. The few
whose
whining, accusations and rants are spoiling this corner of our hobby make
me
ashamed of the low level of social training some of us received as
children.

Please take your venom elsewhere.

Now, can we return to our regularly scheduled programming of Elecraft
product questions and answers, hints and kinks and general good

Re: [Elecraft] K2/100 + KAT100 + Cushcradt R8 Vertical

2008-01-17 Thread DW Holtman

Phil,

I love on a small lot and this forces me to use something other than a full
size Yagi on a 100 foot tower. I owned an R-7 for about 12 years and it
performed great. Over the years (after 9 or 10 years) the way its
performance, degraded. It got to the point where I had to take it down,
clean all of the connections three or four times a year and it would work
again. Well I traded it and bought an R-8. It is now about a year old and
works fine. It does not have the traps that the R-7 had and I suspect it
will last a long time. I live in Salt Lake city where we do get strong
winds, but have never caused a problem.

It is sort of a compromise antenna. But for what it was designed to do it
works great. I also have about a 70 foot longwire antenna I use for
shortwave receiving on my R-390As. It usually brings signals in a little
stronger than the R-8. I'm going to convert it into an inverted L so I can
start getting out on 80 meters.

Hope this helps.

I am contemplating replacing my BW Wideband Folded Dipole with
a Cushcraft R8, the successor to the R7, as my main HF
antenna. The BW is best described as a resistor with wires -
about 10% efficient although it does cover all amateur bands
from 160m to above 10m equally badly. I will have to retain it
for operation on 80m and 160m, though.

What I am curious about is whether the KAT100 can compensate
for the limited bandwidth of the R8 on the lower bands, and how
well the R8 holds up in windstorms (we don't get much ice
here). I expect to be feeding the antenna through about 50
feet of good quality 50-ohm cable.

 Real world experience appreciated.

I'm going to check for wrong parts, cold solder joint etc. Looking at the
schematic drawings, the receive signal path goes through D10, D11 and D12
which were all installed during the transmitter parts installation section.

Does anyone have any other suggestions/ideas?

Re: [Elecraft] K1 trouble shooting question

2008-01-16 Thread DW Holtman

Hello,

Found the problem, as I strongly suspected, it was a mistake on my part. On
page 42 it says to install a 100 uH choke at RFC2 and RFC5. I did not read
the complete sentence and only installed the choke at RFC2.

Thanks for the help.

Chris

You would only need to re-calibrate the VFO if you swap a board which
has the same band as the other one, ie I have a 80/40 two band board for
Winter use and a 40/30/20/15 one for summer, I have to re-set the 40m
calibration when changing the boards as the two 40m band crystals differ
in frequency slightly. You do have to tell the K1 which bands are on the
board, but that is easy and can be done in the field.

Have you picked up the old tip of threading a rubber band through the
spacers to make swapping boards less of a juggling act? The rubber band
holds the spacers on the long bolts and still allows you to tighten
everything up.

You can add capacitance to a KAT1 to improve the low frequency tuning
ability, I've done that with mine. See:
http://www.astromag.co.uk/k2/g4aon_kat1_mods.pdf for details of an easy
and reversible modification.

I recently purchased a K1 for use at our vacation QTH, and gave it
its first workout today during NAQP. It's not a contest rig,
but it did just fine :-)

I've got a couple of questions:

- I have two band modules: 40/30/20/15 and 80/17. Do I need to do
any recalibration when I swap? How involved is this?

- I have a KAT1, and it worked fine until I tried to use my W3EDP
on 40m. It's not really a W3EDP because I feed it remotely with
coax and a BL2 balun. I have the 'output' menu item set to 5W. If I
use the 4:1 setting on the BL2, the KAt1 would get down to about
1.7:1, but the max output was 3.8W (according to the display).
If I use the 1:1 setting, it would only get down to 3.6:1 or so,
but was happy to send 5W out. Huh?

Re: [Elecraft] ARRL RTTY Roundup

Hello,

I have been a long time member of the ARRL, but I'm begining to think the
same way. Are they really supporting the operating that I do? I really don't
know. But, I'm more inclined to think they are headed down a road that I
don't want to follow.

After a week of building a new K1, I was anxious to try it out and get on
the

air.

Imagine my dismay when all I could hear was a racous cacaphony of RTTY
splatter from 7.025 to 7.100. Similarly 14.060 was also RTTY hell.

I was even pushed off of 10.130 (WARC) by an incessant RTTY CQ TEST.

I wonder what drives the ritty boys to swamp the traditional CW bands and
wipe out the QRP calling freqs - oh yes, now I remember, the ARRL has
deemed

CW as non-relevant.

Renewal of my ARRL membership is becoming less and less attractive.

I have several trancievers to sell and am not sure what to ask for them.

Re: [Elecraft] Bit the bullet

2007-12-29 Thread DW Holtman

Hello,

I also placed an order yesterday for a K-3/100 Kit and a KPFB3 General
Coverage Filter. They told me April.

Now, I'm going to locate a Power supply and Mic. I have lots of time to find
what I want. I have been following the Mic thread here closely.

Has anyone here used the MFJ switching power supplies on K2/K3 gear. I used
one in the past on a Drake TR-7 and it worked great. I know the older
switching power supplies were noisy.

I placed an order for a K3/100 yesterday. It looks like an April/May
delivery, but given all I have heard from this group it will be well worth
the wait. Now to sell my OMNI VI+.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Technicians.....

2007-12-29 Thread DW Holtman

Hello,

Also, once the boards are stuffed and the techs are not handling sensitive
components the ESD risk is greatly reduced. Once a device in soldered in the
board, the grounds from the chip to the board ground help a lot in reducing
the ESD problems.

However, some devices will work intermittently after being hit by static. It
can punch a hole in the FET and seem good, but fail down the road.

I bet those blue mats under the rigs are anti static ones hooked up to a

Looks like Elecraft has at least 3 Techs working on getting those units

if they were in NC! It would be much cheaper for them to operate here:)
Looks like they are still in Production Run#1 though with the orders
