Yes, Boot Camp is dual boot. A dual-boot Mac is no use to me, because I need to
use a lot of other software *at the same time* as FrameMaker, cross-referencing
Excel, mail and so on. One could do this most easily by networking a real PC to
the Mac, and running FrameMaker on that.

I was at IPEX on Wednesday, the big 4-yearly UK show for the printing and
publishing industries, and talked to the people on the Apple stand. Their
general view was that Apple had done it because there were a lot of Windows
users who wanted to run XP on Apple's 'real cool, superior hardware' [I am
quoting here]. I hope this doesn't turn out to be hubris. My concern is that
with Apple MacIntels being able to run XP, what is the incentive for Adobe to
go on producing *any Mac applications at all*?

Shortcuts for equation operators

2006-04-07 Thread Yves Barbion
Hi Framers,

some of you may know that you can use shortcuts to insert operators in
equations, for example:

CTRL+SHIFT+ a letter for the Greek alphabet
CTRL+SHIFT+6 for superscript
CTRL+q+SHIFT; for a right arrow
etc.

Does anyone know the shortcut for the following operators:

- multiply (x)
- subscript (as in rf, where f is in subscript)

 Thanks in advance.

Re: Problem with the master pages

Sindu,

Make sure the text frame on the master page is not tagged; that is, make
sure it doesn't have a flow name. Select the text frame, and choose Graphics
Object Properties. Clear the Flow Tag field, and uncheck Autoconnect. This
should give you the result you want.

Yes: you probably put the message in the main A flow on the master page.
FrameMaker does not display objects placed in tagged flows on master pages. Try

generated list of tables, strange behaviour

2006-04-07 Thread CAMBRELENG Helene
Dear Framers,

We are using FrameMaker6.0+sgml and have a template for the List of Figures,
but in the instance of a special publication, we also need a List of Tables. I
have taken the List of Figures template and transformed it to serve as a List
of Tables and it works very well with one exception: it doesn't get the page
numbers right. There is a difference of 1 page number, i.e. the first table is
on page 8 and on the List it reads Table 1 - Title page7

Could anyone please help and tell me where I got it wrong?

Our publication is composed of one book containing 12 Frame documents, the
generated List of tables and of Figures are the last pages but one. The
document is written on both pages left and right and I have made a different
setting for these which seems to be working correctly.

I have checked and rechecked the documents, all of them start on the right page
and have an even number of pages, allowing for a blank page on the left side
where necessary. The blank pages are all auto-numbered correctly.

When we print to PDF everything is fine, the cross-references work well and the
table of contents which lists each first to 3rd level paragraph Title is OK.

The List of Figures is correct!

Is there a way to tell the List to start with the right page number?

Thank you very much in advance for your help!

A possibility is that the created text frame on the master page overlays
the main, tagged (foreground) text frame. Regardless of this
positioning and appearance, the background text frame will be positioned
behind the tagged frame on the body page. The fill pattern for the main
text frame is most likely solid white - thus opaque - and anything
beneath it will be hidden from view.

There are two solutions: either you delete the tagged frame from the
master page; or you can change the fill pattern of the tagged frame to
NONE so it is transparent, thereby allowing the added background frame
and its message to be visible.

RE: fmPython

2006-04-07 Thread Keith Arnett
Hi all,

I had some trouble posting to the list, and first of all, many thanks to
Lisa for her administrative help in getting that straightened out. I was
*most* impressed to receive an actual phone call (!), a rarity these days.
Thanks again, Lisa.

So, although this topic may be a bit stale, I thought I would send it along
to see if everything is working now. :-)

I've used fmPython with FM 7.0 extensively and successfully. I would have
preferred FrameScript, but at the time I was working as a lone writer for a
start-up, and dollars were scarce.

You can place the script (convTI.py) in any convenient location. The
procedure that works for me is:

1. Open the FM book you want to work with.
2. Use the FrameMaker File Open menu command to open the script. The
Unknown File Type dialog box appears, with Text preselected.
3. Click Convert. The Reading Text File dialog box appears.
4. Select the Treat Each Line as a Paragraph option.
5. Select ASCII encoding.
6. Click Read. The script opens in FrameMaker.
7. Click anywhere in the script to place the cursor in the document.
8. Choose the fmPython Selection as script menu command. The script is now
enabled for PDF processing.
9. With the focus on the book, click the fmPythonExecute script menu
command.

You can find the script at:

http://www.isnet.sk/petrucha/?lang=enpage=scripts

Danger, Will Robinson!! I strongly advise that you save a complete backup of
all files before you run the script. Why? Because the Save All Files In
Book menu command is immediately adjacent to the Close All Files In Book
menu command on the FM File menu. The script opens all files in the book and
enables you to convert all of the text insets to plain text. After you run
the script, all it takes is a single mis-click to save all of your book
files with no text insets. Arg.

Do not fool yourself into thinking you will be really careful and do not
need to copy the files to the backup location. Take it from someone who has
learned the hard way. :-) It isn't a total disaster because you can always
re-import the text insets, but it *is* a major waste of time.

Thanks,

Keith

Re: FrameMaker on Mac

2006-04-07 Thread Peter Gold
One of the Mac lists (MacFixIt or one of those) noted that if you
format the Windows side with FAT32, you can see both partitions from
both OSs, but the newer default XP format exceeds the limitations of
FAT32, so most users don't bother fighting the default.

So, you'd have to use a memory stick or email attachment or external
storage of some kind to transfer files, plus, quit and restart OSs.

There's a Mac third-party program, MacDrive, I think it's called,
that makes Mac-formatted drives visible on Windows. I don't know if
it will work with MacTel under Windows. Search Google for it, and ask
the manufacturer.

Under Virtual PC on Mac, you can work across the OSs, but it's slower.

Frame Crashing

2006-04-07 Thread Karyn Hunt
Hi Guys,

I'm having a strange problem that my IT guys tells me is due to a bad
interaction between Windows, FrameMaker and RoboHelp. I’m wondering if any of
you has seen this and if so, what you've done to correct it.

To make a long story short, my Windows Explorer folders are becoming
corrupted and crashing FrameMaker when I try to import images by reference.
Things generally go okay for a while until I spend a fair amount of time
importing several different images. Then all-of-a-sudden, the image folder will
decide it just doesn't want to work with FrameMaker any more and it begins
crashing (both Explorer windows AND FrameMaker) every time I try to import an
image.

If I physically move that folder elsewhere, like my desktop for example, it
begins working again. But then I've broken all other reference links and I have
to start over, which makes this solution unworkable.

To date, the only workaround I can come up with is to move the image folder
to the desktop, copy the new images in, then move the folder back to its usual
spot for archival purposes, should I ever solve this vexing problem.

My IT guys blames this on RoboHelp and says FrameMaker, Windows Explorer and
RoboHelp don't play nicely together. But I don’t' really believe him. My
installation of RoboHelp is working just fine - no problems with it at all -
just FrameMaker and Explorer.

  Any thoughts? Suggestions?

I'm on FrameMaker 7.1 with RoboHelp X5.0.1 and Windows XP Professional
version 2002, Service Pack 2.

To make a long story short, my Windows Explorer folders are becoming
corrupted and crashing FrameMaker when I try to import images by reference.
Things generally go okay for a while until I spend a fair amount of time
importing several different images. Then all-of-a-sudden, the image folder
will decide it just doesn't want to work with FrameMaker any more and it
begins crashing (both Explorer windows AND FrameMaker) every time I try to
 import an image.

If I physically move that folder elsewhere, like my desktop for example,
it begins working again. But then I've broken all other reference links and I
have to start over, which makes this solution unworkable.

To date, the only workaround I can come up with is to move the image
folder to the desktop, copy the new images in, then move the folder back to
its usual spot for archival purposes, should I ever solve this vexing problem.

My IT guys blames this on RoboHelp and says FrameMaker, Windows Explorer
and RoboHelp don't play nicely together. But I don't' really believe him. My
installation of RoboHelp is working just fine - no problems with it at all -
 just FrameMaker and Explorer.

   Any thoughts? Suggestions?

I'm on FrameMaker 7.1 with RoboHelp X5.0.1 and Windows XP Professional
 version 2002, Service Pack 2.

RE: Frame Crashing

2006-04-07 Thread Karyn Hunt
In this case, I'm certain it's not the network b/c everything is on my local
hard drive. FrameMaker and RoboHelp are installed on my C drive under Program
Files. The image folders are under My Documents. (The path is roughly
project name/Frame files + a subfolder with the images/images. It's the final
folder images that keeps corrupting.

Another oddity is that even if FrameMaker isn't open, once that folder decides
not to cooperate, I can't even open it in Windows Explorer. We can, however,
get images out if we go into it in a command window (DOS).

This is virtualization, not, booting to windows. I don't want either, but dual

2006-04-07 Thread Jim Light
I have a problem that is making me crazy. There are a few
seemingly-random table heading cells whose text does not show up in the
PDF.

* In most cases I cloned the tables, so nothing (much) is
different between them, except that one of the table heading cells does
not show up in one of these. For all of these the actual cell text is
the same in both the good and bad tables.
* I have tried restarting the computer and regenerating the PDF,
but that does not help.
* I tried changing the tags, but that doesn't make any difference.
I made sure they are the same as in the cells that show and that does
not help.
* I tried using the text editing tool in Acrobat, but the text I
type in is invisible.
* Some headings are straddled, some are not. It doesn't matter
some of each are invisible.

What is going on here?

Thanks

Framemaker on Mac

2006-04-07 Thread James Monaco

Much more interesting to Mac Framemaker users than Apple's Boot Camp
are Parallels' XP emulator (now shipping beta) and -- especially --
the Open Source project for something called Darwine. Based on
Wine, a Linux project, Darwine will allow a user to run a Windows
application under OS X. Not only don't you not boot Windows, you
don't even buy it.

I have no idea how stable this will be, or whether Wine works well on
Linux, and of course there will be glitches, but the concept is
remarkable.

Think of the ramifications: my guess is that many Windows users love
their aps not their OS. And if Darwine beats Vista to market. Hmmnn

Updating text with new paragraph tag settings

2006-04-07 Thread Karyn Hunt
Hi All,

I have some very old chapters from some very old books that I’m
selectively copying and pasting into some new books. The new books have
slightly different character tag settings (different indents and line
spacing) so I’m importing the new formats into all the old chapters as I
copy them in to the new books. Problem is, this old book had a whole lot
of overrides and when I see the paragraph tags in the new book (in the
paragraph tag field on the menu), the tag names have asterisks next to
and have not yet picked up the new settings. So I’m having to go back
and select each chunk of text and re-tag it with the same tag to make it
pick up the new settings. Is there some shortcut to quickly update them
all at once?

  I’m in Frame 7.1.

Try File Import Formats, and select paragraph and character tags,

Anchored frames position

2006-04-07 Thread Gillian Flato
I have white space on the left side of book. When I import a graphic, I
want the anchored frame to be centered below the line, but centered
within the margins of the text, not to the page size.

For example, if I have 2 inches of white space on the left side, 4
inches of text, and a 2 inch graphic, I want the anchored Frame to span
from 3 inches in to 5 inches.

How do I do this? I don't want to have to set this for each frame. I
want the Below Current Line feature to look at the paragraph tag, see
what the margins are and center it according to that.

I tried applying a paragraph style to it but it didn't work.

Vanishing Table Heading Cells

2006-04-07 Thread Jim Light
The text is fine in FM.
The properties of the text in the PDF are the same for the invisible
text as for the visible text. (!!!)

I tried re-importing table definitions, but that didn't help.

I copied the text to a new template and that didn't help.

I made a copy of a good table and copied the body rows into it. (These
tables have the same heading rows, so I can use a good one and just
change the body rows). This worked twice and then it didn't work. About
half of my table collection has this weird problem.

At this point I am copying a good one and using it to recreate a bad one
over and over until they are all OK.

What on Earth is going on???

Robert Stoker's plug-in may do it for you, but may I suggest a different
approach? Create a new pgf format called, for instance,
FrameAnchorCentered. Define as centered, make sure line spacing is NOT
fixed, and specify the space above and below to put the frame where you
want. Then put your anchored frames into FrameAnchorCentered pgfs using
the At Insertion Point setting (instead of Below Current Line).

By putting each anchored frame into its own pgf, instead of anchoring in
the text pgf preceding it, you'll have much better control over spacing,
pagination, etc.

Yes, Boot Camp is dual boot. A dual-boot Mac is no use to me, because I need to

general view was that Apple had done it because there were a lot of Windows
users who wanted to run XP on Apple's 'real cool, superior hardware' [I am
quoting here]. I hope this doesn't turn out to be hubris. My concern is that
with Apple MacIntels being able to run XP, what is the incentive for Adobe to
go on producing *any Mac applications at all*?

Shortcuts for equation operators

2006-04-07 Thread Yves Barbion
Hi Framers,

some of you may know that you can use shortcuts to insert operators in
equations, for example:

CTRL+SHIFT+ a letter for the Greek alphabet
CTRL+SHIFT+6 for superscript
CTRL+q+SHIFT; for a right arrow
etc.

Does anyone know the shortcut for the following operators:

- multiply (x)
- subscript (as in "rf", where f is in subscript)

 Thanks in advance.

Problem with the master pages

2006-04-07 Thread Rick Quatro
Sindu,

Make sure the text frame on the master page is not "tagged"; that is, make
sure it doesn't have a flow name. Select the text frame, and choose Graphics
 > Object Properties. Clear the Flow Tag field, and uncheck Autoconnect. This
should give you the result you want.

Hello All,

We are using Unstructured frame maker in our company. I want to display a
message at the center of the last page. I created a master page and
included a text frame with the message inside it along with the headers and
footers..and applied that master page on to last page .i am able to view
headers and footer for the same but not the message in the text frame.
Can u please tell me what might be the problem.

Yes: you probably put the message in the main A flow on the master page.
FrameMaker does not display objects placed in tagged flows on master pages. Try
again, selecting the 'Background Text' option.

If you *did* select the background text option, I don't know what the problem

generated list of tables, strange behaviour

2006-04-07 Thread CAMBRELENG Helene
Dear Framers,

We are using FrameMaker6.0+sgml and have a template for the List of Figures,
but in the instance of a special publication, we also need a List of Tables. I
have taken the List of Figures template and transformed it to serve as a List
of Tables and it works very well with one exception: it doesn't get the page
numbers right. There is a difference of 1 page number, i.e. the first table is
on page 8 and on the List it reads "Table 1 - Title page7"

There are two solutions: either you delete the tagged frame from the
master page; or you can change the fill pattern of the tagged frame to
NONE so it is transparent, thereby allowing the added background frame
and its message to be visible.

fmPython

2. Use the FrameMaker File > Open menu command to open the script. The
Unknown File Type dialog box appears, with "Text" preselected.
3. Click Convert. The Reading Text File dialog box appears.
4. Select the Treat Each Line as a Paragraph option.
5. Select ASCII encoding.
6. Click Read. The script opens in FrameMaker.
7. Click anywhere in the script to place the cursor in the document.
8. Choose the fmPython > Selection as script menu command. The script is now
enabled for PDF processing.
9. With the focus on the book, click the fmPython>Execute script menu
command.

You can find the script at:

http://www.isnet.sk/petrucha/?lang=en=scripts

Danger, Will Robinson!! I strongly advise that you save a complete backup of
all files before you run the script. Why? Because the "Save All Files In
Book" menu command is immediately adjacent to the "Close All Files In Book"
menu command on the FM File menu.

Thanks,

Keith

Print quality of graphics rotated in Frame

When I tried to convert to EPS & reference that
instead, Frame could not display the graphic.

Any suggestions?

Complex context rules

2006-04-07 Thread Steve Rickaby
I am in the situation in which I want an element to be able to check whether
its *parent* is the first element of *its* parent.

Put another way, element A needs to be able to check whether A's parent is the
first element of A's grandparent.

The on-line struct dev guide (page 135 in FrameMaker 7 version) seems to imply
that context rules of the form:

If context is: Parent {first} < GrandParent, or

If context is: Parent {after Grandparent} < * < SomeOtherAncestor

are valid, but I can't get these rule to trigger. Are there any pitfalls here?

I can answer my own question - yes, there are: don't ignore intervening ,
which will cause the {first} or {after} rules to fail.

I am going down with some sort of bug: that's my excuse for muddle-headedness.

FrameMaker on Mac

I?m wondering if any of
you has seen this and if so, what you've done to correct it.

But I don?t' really believe him. My
installation of RoboHelp is working just fine - no problems with it at all -
just FrameMaker and Explorer.

  Any thoughts? Suggestions?

I'm on FrameMaker 7.1 with RoboHelp X5.0.1 and Windows XP Professional
version 2002, Service Pack 2.

If the network is involved, hiccups there and in the way Windows is

hard drive. FrameMaker and RoboHelp are installed on my C drive under Program
Files. The image folders are under "My Documents." (The path is roughly
/Frame files + a subfolder with the images/images. It's the final
folder that keeps corrupting.

Another oddity is that even if FrameMaker isn't open, once that folder decides
not to cooperate, I can't even open it in Windows Explorer. We can, however,
get images out if we go into it in a command window (DOS).

Back in 1987 I had been using Framemaker for a couple of years, when
a new version came out that included a networking feature. I tried
using it, and found that everything had slowed to a crawl. I sent off
a blistering review of the new product to Framemaker, and got an email
back a few days later from the president of the company, apologizing
for our troubles, expressing surprise, and suggesting some experiments
to try to pinpoint the problem. The first experiment showed that it was
our own (new) network causing the problem. I sent a contrite "whoops,
never mind" to Framemaker. Had this been a Windows network (impossible
in 1987, yeah I know) I would have suspected that right away...-BobC

Are the FM and graphics files local, on a network drive, or mixed?

If the network is involved, hiccups there and in the way Windows is
reading the network file system would be my first guess.

Frame Crashing

2006-04-07 Thread Art Campbell
Karyn,

I'd say you're having a hard drive or OS problem. One key is your
"Other Oddity" -- that isn't normal behavior for Windows XP.

Have you run Norton, checkdisk, or a similar disk utility to check
both the media and the operating system (and the file / directory
structure) out?

And have you backed your files up?

It *would* be nice if the Unix version could be ported over to OS X, but the
Windows dual-boot option is not a virtualization, like Virtual PC.
It is actually running Windows on the computer.

You missed a post or two somewhere along the line. I'm not talking about dual
boot. Follow the link. http://www.parallels.com/
This is virtualization, not, booting to windows. I don't want either, but dual
booting is more inconvenient than virtual platforms.

This _might_ be a symptom of the disappearing font bug that can be
fixed or worked around if you re-hyphenate the document. Easy to

Framemaker on Mac

2006-04-07 Thread James Monaco

Much more interesting to Mac Framemaker users than Apple's Boot Camp
are Parallels' XP emulator (now shipping beta) and -- especially --
the Open Source project for something called "Darwine". Based on
Wine, a Linux project, Darwine will allow a user to run a Windows
application under OS X.

Hmmnn

With the TouchUp Text Tool selected, click in or select the "invisible"
text, right-click, and select Properties. Take a look at the info on the
Text tab, especially the font and fill. See if that gives you any hints.

Anchored frames position

2006-04-07 Thread Robert Stoker
I believe our Graphfix plug-in will do what you want, if I read you
correctly. Download the trial version of the plug-in from our website
(www.seatechpubs.com). Choose "Services," choose "Plug-ins," and then,
look for the download link for the Graphfix plug-in. Contact me if you
need a Mac version.

After you install the plug-in, try the following procedure (please
forgive me for improper software documentation techniques, I'm a
gearhead):

1. If you are using structured Frame, place the insertion point at a
valid graphic insertion point in the structure view. Note: the plug-in
will allow you to insert elements in invalid places. For unstructured
Frame, place your curser where you want the graphic.

2. Perform the following shortcut: esc = i. This shortcut is case
sensitive.

3. If you are using structured Frame, choose an element tag from the
drop-down box. (The plug-in parses your EDD and determines the valid
graphic elements.) Skip this step if you are using unstructured Frame.

4. Choose "Below Current Line" from the anchoring position drop-down
box.

5. Choose "Center" from the alignment drop-down box.

6. Check the "Floating" box.

7. Click on the "Change" radio button to change the current frame
configuration settings. (Default frame configuration settings can be
changed under the "Graphfix" menu. Changing the default settings in the
plug-in has no effect on the FrameMaker default settings.)

8. Choose the "Custom" radio button, and enter your desired the width
and height. (I would suggest you try other settings to find the best
for you.)

9. Change other configuration settings to your liking.

10. Choose the "Set" button.

11. Choose the insert button, and navigate to the graphic you want to
insert.

12. Choose the graphic. The plug-in should place the graphic is where
you want it.

You may need to play around with the settings a little. I'm not sure
how your template is set up. Once you have set your defaults, the
plug-in remembers the next time you insert a graphic.

I hope this helps.

Robert Stoker

Robert Stoker's plug-in may do it for you, but may I suggest a different
approach? Create a new pgf format called, for instance,
FrameAnchorCentered. Define as centered, make sure line spacing is NOT
fixed, and specify the space above and below to put the frame where you
want. Then put your anchored frames into FrameAnchorCentered pgfs using
the At Insertion Point setting (instead of Below Current Line).

By putting each anchored frame into its own pgf, instead of anchoring in
the text pgf preceding it, you'll have much better control over spacing,
pagination, etc.

HTH!
