Re: Inserting a landscape page within a portrait layout document

2009-01-22 Thread Yves Barbion
Hi Mathieu

No need to apologize, you're not disturbing anyone here on this list. ;-)

You can do one of the following to insert landscape pages:

   - Choose *Format Customize Layout Rotate Page Clockwise* (or
   Counterclockwise)
   - Split up your file and put the files in a FrameMaker book. Create
separate files for the landscape pages and insert these at the relevant
positions in your FrameMaker book. This is a bit more work in the beginning,
but it's also a safer option for future updates.

Cheers

As you know, MadCap Software is offering a series of free, typically
tool-neutral, webinars. There’s still time to sign up for the next

about Advanced Publishing in Flare or Blaze.

If that time and date don’t work for you, sign up anyway and you will

Keep an eye on http://www.madcapsoftware.com/demos/webinars.aspx for

successful, so we plan on offering them for a while. If you want to
update your knowledge of the Tech Comm field, these webinars may help.

If you’re interested in presenting a topic to the field, contact me
and let’s discuss your idea. If you have a topic you’d like to see,

Currently, I’m looking for someone to cover creating API docs and
someone to cover creating visuals from technical content for webinars

need a computer with a microphone for the VoIP to present. Microphone

Scrolling through files in a book

2009-01-22 Thread Jon Harvey
Everyone,

I have a book with several files in it. With the book open, there are
times when I can easily page up or down from one file to the next
throughout the book. There are other times that FM stops at either the
first or last page of a file and refuses to go any further. In these
cases, I often have to go back to the book file, save the file I want to
go to, close it, and reopen it. What gives?

Instead of just rotating body pages ad hoc as needed, create rotated custom

worth it, but if there is a recurring need, automating this would be a good
idea.

But without intending any criticism of your question, I can help with the
archive search problem. Don't use the FrameUsers site, use Google. You can
restrict a Google search to the FrameUsers list by entering a search string
like this:

landscape pages site:lists.frameusers.com

Try that one, and I think you'll find several of the 76 hits quite relevant.

Could you provide all the environment info, please? OS, FM rev, files on

Without that, the default behaviour is to go from page to page across file
boundaries within a book. This assumes that the book has been updated since
they were added, but I've not seen this not work.

Importing multipage TIFFs into FM8

2009-01-22 Thread Yves Barbion
Posted on behalf of Richard Melanson

*Hello Framers,*

**

*I have spent the last couples of hours trying to find an answer to this
question. I am importing by reference TIFFs into a Framemaker 8 file. The
TIFFs are a single file with multiple pages, but Frame is only importing the
first page. What am I missing here, I sure hope this is not embarrassingly
easy answer. Thank you for any help you can give me.*

PDF Documentation

Is it your experience that users view PDF documentation on their

If so, by what ratio of view:print? Opinions and SWAGs are fine.

Re: PDF Documentation

2009-01-22 Thread Art Campbell
I think it depends on whether it's task-oriented info or reference, and also
on what the product is.

If it's software, and it's task-oriented, I usually keep it on-screen while
I'm doing something.
If it's conceptual or reference doc, I'm more likely to print it.

If it's hardware based, like how to install something -- either computer or,
say, room lights, I'd expect it to be printed.

RE: PDF Documentation

2009-01-22 Thread John Sgammato
In my experience (especially following recent conversations with our
services guys), user preference for print vs PDF changes quite a lot
with industry, country, and what the user's other product documentation
is like.
For example, in US hospitals, many users like the printed docs and see
them as a sign of respect and our corporate ability as well as being a
means to find intformation.
German culture is much more green-minded than ours, so among our German
customers, especially in manufacturing, printed docs are anathema, proof
that we ignorant Americans will destroy our planet in short order.
We normally ship a printed doc set with every purchase, but we are
considering revising that, at least in the EMEA business area, to be a
free option.

Re: How can I search for bold text and change it to a character style?

2009-01-22 Thread Lin Sims
(Sorry if this is 2 days after the question, but I've been on vacation.)

You can also get Rick Quattro's Find/Change Special plugin, which can
search for a character style and replace it with another character
style (amongst other things).

 Copy Special Character Style.
Find, specifying the bold text, and replace by pasting.

Note that the Copy Special is Character *Format* rather than
Character *Style*, and that's actually an important distinction.
When you use Copy Special, FrameMaker copies all of the current
selections font format characteristics, including the explicit font
and size settings as well as the character tag that you really
want to propagate. If you copy the format from a chunk of
body text (for example, 11 pt TNR bold with the Bold character
tag applied) and then paste onto a selection in a heading (say
14 pt Helvetica non-bold), you will get a chunk of 11 pt TNR
in the middle of that heading.

FW: Framer's List issue

Subject: Framer's List issue

Richard,
Hello. My name is Mark Eichelberger, and I was wondering if you could
do me a favor. I am a registered user of the Framer's list and as
recently as 1/6/09, I was able to successfully submit items to the list.
In addition, I continue to receive emails from other posters to the
list, including you. (I am set up to receive actual postings and not a
digest format.)

However, I have noticed that since Friday, 1/16/09, none of my submitted
emails to framers@lists.frameusers.com have made it to the list. I have
sent emails to the listad...@frameusers.com mailbox explaining this
issue, but I have not received any reply from the administrator of the
list, so I am not sure if the admin has not received these emails or has
just not gotten around to reading my emails.

Since it appears that none of my emails are getting through to the list,
I am asking if you could please post my dilemma to the group in the hope
that someone has some idea on how to resolve this or to determine if
others are also experiencing this issue.

Thank you so very much,

Vaguely OT: Graphics Editor Recommendations?

2009-01-22 Thread Lea Rush
Heya,

I'd like to solicit opinions on graphic editors from the community. I'm in a
grey area between graphics needs, and I could use some advice on the
appropriate editor.

I care for three kinds of graphics.
* Simple line-art drawings, similar to kindergarten mechanical
drawings
* Photos for inclusion in both printed and PDF media
* Software dialog screenshots for both printed and PDF media

I'm running Vista with FM8.0. I'm considering upgrading to either TC2 or a
combination of FM9 and Acrobat 9 ProExt, depending on whether the latter
will support round-tripping PDFs in the review process.

Thoughts? Or perhaps a recommendation for a mailing list more appropriate to
this question?

Thanks much in advance,
Lea

Re: Vaguely OT: Graphics Editor Recommendations?

2009-01-22 Thread Art Campbell
Given that Photoshop is now bundled with TCS2, that would be my choice for
most of your needs. I prefer SnagIt for screenshots because of its tighter
integration; it has a rudimentary editor and Photoshop can do more serious
work on the files it creates. For really simple line drawings, Photoshop
works, but for most diagrams and such, I use Visio because it's quicker.

It can.
I downloaded the FM9 demo and tested it last night.
I opened my Appliance Guide book and all chapters and generated the PDF
using the Save as PDF (Send for review)... Feature.
Then I opened the PDF and made some various edits (deletions,
insertions, sticky notes, and highlighting).
Then in the Book file, I imported PDF comments. The insert/delete
comments appeared as conditional text in different colors, and the two
sticky notes appeared as markers.
I do not see an MS Word-style accept-reject comment option, but it
will still save a lot of time to have them all in place for me.

For products not related to getting the computer working, my first

can leaf through.

My second preference is a PDF on my machine, with a link to updated

access, which isn't always available when traveling, in meetings, etc.

Last choice is self-printed pages, which I find less handy to use than
professional publications.

Lea,

I concur with Art Campbell re: Photoshop/TCSuite2 and SnagIt for screen
caps. For the line drawings, you should try a couple of open-source options:

Dia (Windows download: http://dia-installer.de/index_en.html) for Visio-like
diagrams
Inkscape: (www.inkscape.org) for vector drawing (a la Illustrator and Corel
Draw)

No difficult learning curve, even for non-graphics people like me. Very nice

Thoughts? Or perhaps a recommendation for a mailing list more appropriate

Re: PDF Documentation

2009-01-22 Thread Scott Prentice
OK .. I'll add my 0.02 to this survey ..

In general I hate reading PDFs on screen.

When reading content on screen I much prefer doing so in an application
that allows me to resize the window to suit my needs (typically HTML ..
web browser or CHM), and the content flows to fit that window. If a PDF
is intended for printing, it will usually be too big to be convenient on
screen (assuming that I'm using this along with another application). If
a PDF is optimized for on screen use (typically a smaller page size) it
won't be very useful for printing. Also, if you provide a multi column
layout (often nice for printed output), it becomes very difficult to use
on screen. Some companies provide two versions of PDF docs, one for
printing and one for on screen use .. I think that's a very nice thing
to offer .. but would prefer that the on screen documentation be a more
user-friendly format (CHM/HTML). Searching in a PDF is a fairly useless
operation as well, which is another reason I prefer to use other types
of online docs.

Cheers,

many cases. Just *my* $0.02...

Re: Scrolling through files in a book

2009-01-22 Thread Dave Reynolds
This used to be a problem in earlier versions of Frame. I know that in
Frame 6 you could not page through a book if you had Para Designer open,
but you could if it was closed. I can't remember now if other Designers
had the same effect. Anyway, seems to have been fixed in 8. We
upgraded from 6 to 8 last year, so I don't know if it was still a
problem in 7.

throughout the book. There are other times that FM stops at either the
first or last page of a file and refuses to go any further. In these
cases, I often have to go back to the book file, save the file I want to
go to, close it, and reopen it. What gives?

Re: PDF Documentation

2009-01-22 Thread rinch
Kelly,

My experience is that my users prefer viewing PDFs, preferring PDF over
paper.

We shifted from delivering paper operating manuals to delivering PDFs on
CD a years ago. We were worried at first, but needlessly so. We even
offered to ship printed, bound hardcopy for free to any user that
requested it. Our users liked the change to PDF very much, and now prefer
PDFs. I have not had a request for a hardcopy manual in years. Actually,
customers have told their reps how much they prefer the PDFs.

Our Service Department initially balked when we talked about doing away
with hardcopy Service Manuals, but once they started using the PDFs they
shifted quickly away from paper. I can put E size schematics in a PDF
(beautiful vector drawings created directly from our CAD software --- for
example, Service Technicians can print just a portion of the schematic at
whatever zoom level they want on standard 8 1/2 x 11 paper or print the
entire schematic on E size paper if the printer supports it). The Service
Technicians now have PDFs that contain all the Service information they
need, and they can always find a printer they can hook into to print
hardcopy, if need be. But, honestly, the standard for them is to work from
their laptop, viewing the PDF of the manual on screen.

If users are connected to a printer, they will print out pages of interest
to them. But, I've never heard of anyone actually printing a whole PDF to
hardcopy.

I do support a product line of hand held instruments used by HVAC
technicians; more of a main stream, over-the-counter product. For example,
when you call a HVAC technician to come service your central air
conditioning, they will probably have in their truck a small hand held
leak detector in a very tough case. We include small, short, paper manuals
for those hand held products. We do not supply a CD with the manual on it
to these people; they prefer paper (they can get their manual in PDF off
of our website, though). Honestly, these instruments don't really need a
manual anyway, and I suspect most of these paper manuals are quickly lost
once people figure out how to install the batteries, how to set the
sensitivity range, and turn it on/off.

But, for my larger, more complicated instruments, PDF alone is just fine
and is actually preferred by my customers. These instruments often come
with specialized control software, and since those users are already using
computers, PDF is a natural fit. This is especially true for instruments
that are used in clean room environments. Years ago I prepared very
expensive clean room paper manuals. A PDF viewed on their clean room
computer is now the preferred choice by my users. These instruments are
not sold over the counter. They are purchased with Service Contracts
and/or installation by trained technicians. We don't even supply short
Quick Use Guides or Getting Started Guides (like those you get when you
buy a new printer for your home computer) because only trained technicians
should install the instrument. The installation parameters are in the
Operating Manual PDF on the CD we supply, but in most cases a trained
technician, working from a Service Manual PDF, does the actual instrument
installation.

Your situation may be different than mine. Perhaps your products are more
mainstream. But, for me, PDF works well for all but my hand held
products, and PDF is preferred over hardcopy by all but my hand held
product users.

Richard

Vaguely OT: Graphics Editor Recommendations?

Heya,

I'd like to solicit opinions on graphic editors from the community. I'm in
a
grey area between graphics needs, and I could use some advice on the
appropriate editor.

I care for three kinds of graphics.
*Simple line-art drawings, similar to kindergarten
mechanical
drawings
*Photos for inclusion in both printed and PDF media
*Software dialog screenshots for both printed and PDF
media

I'm running Vista with FM8.0. I'm considering upgrading to either TC2 or a
combination of FM9 and Acrobat 9 ProExt, depending on whether the latter
will support round-tripping PDFs in the review process.

Thoughts? Or perhaps a recommendation for a mailing list more appropriate
to
this question?

Thanks much in advance,
Lea

Why does Frame cycle 2x ?

Whenever I use Find in a book, Frame always cycles twice through each

How come?

RE: Why does Frame cycle 2x ?

2009-01-22 Thread Lief Erickson
My experience is that if you leave the Find dialog box to edit
something, FrameMaker knows this and starts its search over from the
last location of the cursor in the flow until it has circled through the
file back to the cursor spot. If you don't jump from the Find dialog
into the document, FrameMaker only goes through the file once. I know of
no way to have it stop once it reaches the end of the file without
circling back through if I've made a change in the document that wasn't
using the Find dialog.

RE: PDF Documentation

2009-01-22 Thread Pinkham, Jim
My 2 cents, as others have hinted, is that it depends on the
application. When I'm working on manuals by day, I love having a
searchable PDF when I need to track something down for reference. When
I'm assembling a gizmo at home, I want a hard copy. Chances are I won't
be working anywhere close to the computer. When I'm wearing my
journalist's hat and reporting on the doings of a local government or
school board, where meeting packets are increasingly coming in PDF
format, I want both -- a hard copy of at least the agenda and any major
discussion topics to refer to during the conversation, a PDF at home and
writing for when I have to navigate the packet and hunt down relevant
details.

Our users liked the change to PDF very much, and now
prefer PDFs. I have not had a request for a hardcopy manual in years.
Actually, customers have told their reps how much they prefer the PDFs.

Our Service Department initially balked when we talked about doing away
with hardcopy Service Manuals, but once they started using the PDFs they
shifted quickly away from paper. I can put E size schematics in a PDF
(beautiful vector drawings created directly from our CAD software ---
for example, Service Technicians can print just a portion of the
schematic at whatever zoom level they want on standard 8 1/2 x 11 paper
or print the entire schematic on E size paper if the printer supports
it). The Service Technicians now have PDFs that contain all the Service
information they need, and they can always find a printer they can hook
into to print hardcopy, if need be. But, honestly, the standard for them
is to work from their laptop, viewing the PDF of the manual on screen.

If users are connected to a printer, they will print out pages of
interest to them. But, I've never heard of anyone actually printing a
whole PDF to hardcopy.

I do support a product line of hand held instruments used by HVAC
technicians; more of a main stream, over-the-counter product. For
example, when you call a HVAC technician to come service your central
air conditioning, they will probably have in their truck a small hand
held leak detector in a very tough case. We include small, short, paper
manuals for those hand held products. We do not supply a CD with the
manual on it to these people; they prefer paper (they can get their
manual in PDF off of our website, though). Honestly, these instruments
don't really need a manual anyway, and I suspect most of these paper
manuals are quickly lost once people figure out how to install the
batteries, how to set the sensitivity range, and turn it on/off.

But, for my larger, more complicated instruments, PDF alone is just fine
and is actually preferred by my customers. These instruments often come
with specialized control software, and since those users are already
using computers, PDF is a natural fit. This is especially true for
instruments that are used in clean room environments. Years ago I
prepared very expensive clean room paper manuals. A PDF viewed on their
clean room computer is now the preferred choice by my users. These
instruments are not sold over the counter. They are purchased with
Service Contracts and/or installation by trained technicians. We don't
even supply short Quick Use Guides or Getting Started Guides (like those
you get when you buy a new printer for your home computer) because only
trained technicians should install the instrument. The installation
parameters are in the Operating Manual PDF on the CD we supply, but in
most cases a trained technician, working from a Service Manual PDF, does
the actual instrument installation.

Your situation may be different than mine. Perhaps your products are
more mainstream. But, for me, PDF works well for all but my hand held
products, and PDF is preferred over hardcopy by all but my hand held
product users.

Um, no, there is not. And whether the cycle is 11 years, or 7, or 20 is
irrelevant.

I can't speak for Germany, but the U.S. has more forested acres today
than it had 100 years ago. As of 2004, there were more than two acres of
forest for every person in the U.S.

One reason is because increased agricultural efficiency lets us grow
more food on fewer acres, so less land is plowed up. Another reason is
that long-term growth in demand for wood products, including paper,
encouraged entrepreneurs to plant lots of trees and to manage forest
resources for sustained profitability.

Most of the what's called pulpwood (used for paper products) comes
from the 7% of forested land that's actual tree farms. As demand for
paper grows, so does the size of tree farms.

Depends upon what it is (how long mostly) and the page layout (size,
portrait vs landscape).

If it is one page it seems to get printed, but if it is long and is a
manual it gets printed too. But if if is middling to long and is, for
example a District Plan, technical reference, or something similar it
doesn't get printed although selected pages might.

This is really really bad. So what you're saying is that it only
responds to the first letter you press and if you press the second it
then jumps to the style that starts with that, if there is one?

Sorry, but I have never had any faith in Adobe's desire to listen. In

I think that may well be a deal breaker for me - all the other good

is not a DTP app. and I need to get through large amounts of text
without fussing with the program. This changes renders FM about as

That would mean buying the scripts, buying FrameScript to run them

In the Equations palette, Symbols page: click the Start String button, then
type any symbol/string
(you can also type ' or " to start the string insertion)

Inserting a landscape page within a portrait layout document

2009-01-22 Thread mathieu jacquet

Hi all,

and sorry for the disturbance. I know this one has been dealt with a number of
time, but I cannot perform a proper search in the Framers Archives (the site
seems in maintenance).

We work with Frame 6.0 on Unix and would like to insert a number of landscape
pages within a document whose layout is exclusively "portrait".

How should we proceed?

Thank you very much for your help,

Mathieu.

Inserting a landscape page within a portrait layout document

2009-01-22 Thread Yves Barbion
Hi Mathieu

No need to apologize, you're not disturbing anyone here on this list. ;-)

You can do one of the following to insert landscape pages:

   - Choose *Format > Customize Layout > Rotate Page Clockwise* (or
   Counterclockwise)
   - Split up your file and put the files in a FrameMaker book. Create
separate files for the landscape pages and insert these at the relevant
positions in your FrameMaker book. This is a bit more work in the beginning,
but it's also a safer option for future updates.

Cheers

RESOLVED: Inserting a landscape page within a portrait layout document

2009-01-22 Thread Sharon Burton
Vendor post but not very vendor-y

As you know, MadCap Software is offering a series of free, typically
tool-neutral, webinars. There?s still time to sign up for the next
one, offered Jan 29 at 9am Pacific time. Mike Hamilton is talking
about Advanced Publishing in Flare or Blaze.

If that time and date don?t work for you, sign up anyway and you will
be sent a link to the recorded webinar the next day. We?re recording
the free webinars and making them available from our website.

Keep an eye on http://www.madcapsoftware.com/demos/webinars.aspx for
all our upcoming free webinars. These free webinars are very
successful, so we plan on offering them for a while. If you want to
update your knowledge of the Tech Comm field, these webinars may help.

If you?re interested in presenting a topic to the field, contact me
and let?s discuss your idea. If you have a topic you?d like to see,
also contact me and let?s talk about it.

Currently, I?m looking for someone to cover creating API docs and
someone to cover creating visuals from technical content for webinars
in the May/June time period. You don?t need be in the US but you do
need a computer with a microphone for the VoIP to present. Microphone
headsets can be purchased for less than $40US.

Thanks!

Scrolling through files in a book

2009-01-22 Thread Jon Harvey
Everyone,

I have a book with several files in it. With the book open, there are
times when I can easily page up or down from one file to the next
throughout the book. There are other times that FM stops at either the
first or last page of a file and refuses to go any further. In these
cases, I often have to go back to the book file, save the file I want to
go to, close it, and reopen it. What gives?

The first option can be made much more robust and flexible with a bit more work
in the beginning, too.

Instead of just rotating body pages ad hoc as needed, create rotated custom
master pages (LandscapeLeft and LandscapeRight might be good names). In FM 7.x
or higher, you could assign these master pages based on specific paragraph
tags, but IIRC, FM6 didn't have that feature. There are, however, scripts
and/or plugins that will do it. If this is a one-time thing, it probably isn't
worth it, but if there is a recurring need, automating this would be a good
idea.

mathieu jacquet wrote:

With some of us, it just depends on our level of caffeination. Too early is not
good, but too late is risky, too. ;-)

HTH!

Hi Sharon,

It's a better idea to start a new thread with a new message, not a
Reply. If I'm not mistaken, even if you edit the subject line, the
header info retained in a Reply message can still cause the message to
be sorted into its original thread topic in e-mail clients or archives.

Starting a fresh topic with a New message command guarantees a new thread.

Scrolling through files in a book

2009-01-22 Thread Art Campbell
Jon,

Could you provide all the environment info, please? OS, FM rev, files on
servers, etc.

Without that, the default behaviour is to go from page to page across file
boundaries within a book. This assumes that the book has been updated since
they were added, but I've not seen this not work.

Thanks,

I think it depends on whether it's task-oriented info or reference, and also
on what the product is.

If it's software, and it's task-oriented, I usually keep it on-screen while
I'm doing something.
If it's conceptual or reference doc, I'm more likely to print it.

If it's hardware based, like how to install something -- either computer or,
say, room lights, I'd expect it to be printed.

PDF Documentation

Richard,
Hello. My name is Mark Eichelberger, and I was wondering if you could
do me a favor. I am a registered user of the Framer's list and as
recently as 1/6/09, I was able to successfully submit items to the list.
In addition, I continue to receive emails from other posters to the

However, I have noticed that since Friday, 1/16/09, none of my submitted
emails to framers at lists.frameusers.com have made it to the list. I have
sent emails to the listadmin at frameusers.com mailbox explaining this
issue, but I have not received any reply from the administrator of the

just not gotten around to reading my emails.

How can I search for bold text and change it to a character style?

2009-01-22 Thread Lin Sims
(Sorry if this is 2 days after the question, but I've been on vacation.)

You can also get Rick Quattro's Find/Change Special plugin, which can
search for a character style and replace it with another character
style (amongst other things).

Thanks much in advance,
Lea

Given that Photoshop is now bundled with TCS2, that would be my choice for
most of your needs. I prefer SnagIt for screenshots because of its tighter
integration; it has a rudimentary editor and Photoshop can do more serious
work on the files it creates. For really simple line drawings, Photoshop
works, but for most diagrams and such, I use Visio because it's quicker.

New Adobe Technical Communication Suite 2 and newAdobeeLearningSuite

2009-01-22 Thread John Sgammato
I do not see an MS Word-style "accept-reject comment" option, but it
will still save a lot of time to have them all in place for me.

Just a few days ago, my MacBook Pro wouldn't finish booting.
Fortunately, I had previously installed Applejack, printed the brief
version of its instructions, and taped it to my desk. Thus I was able
to quickly run it and fix the problem (a corrupted startup plist file).

For products not related to getting the computer working, my first
preference is professionally printed and bound documentation that I
can leaf through.

My second preference is a PDF on my machine, with a link to updated
information online. Purely online documentation depends on having Web
access, which isn't always available when traveling, in meetings, etc.

Last choice is self-printed pages, which I find less handy to use than
professional publications.

Vaguely OT: Graphics Editor Recommendations?

2009-01-22 Thread Mike McCallister

Very nice
results.

Lea,

Line-art drawings are vector art. Adobe Illustrator is probably the favorite
program there, but there are similar programs. Just this week, someone
posted a link to a very cheap version of Xara Extreme, but you'd have to
hunt the archives for the link.

Photos are bitmaps. Adobe Photoshop is the standard. Make sure you get the
full version, not Photoshop Elements. Elements doesn't handle CMYK, which
you need for press. Corel makes Paint Shop Pro, and there are other third
party choices.

SnagIt is probably the far and away favorite for capturing screenshots. It's
very powerful and inexpensive. In Windows, you can also use the Print Screen
key on your keyboard. It captures the whole screen. Then you open a new file
in Photoshop and hit Ctrl-V to paste the capture into Photoshop. You then
will have to crop out the part of the view that you don't want. Then save
the file. If you rarely need screen captures, this is enough. If you do it
often, SnagIt lets you point to a window and it can capture only the window.
You may also have a capability, depending on your graphic card. My Matrox
graphic card lets me select a region for capture, by drawing a box.

I'm not sure you need the extended version of Acrobat 9 Pro for the
round-tripping of PDF comments. So you might want to look at one of the
Creative Suites containing Photoshop, Illustrator, and Acrobat Pro.

Framer's List issue

2009-01-22 Thread Combs, Richard
I've received an email from another list member whose posts aren't
showing up on the list. I'd rather not end up forwarding a number of
such messages to the list (I don't mind the few clicks it would take,
but it's not something that should clog up the list). If you're posting
to the list, but don't see your posts, please try the following:

1) Check the most recent archive to see if your posts are there. The
archives are at:

http://lists.frameusers.com/pipermail/framers/

2) If your posts _are_ in the archive, but you didn't receive them from
the list, check your subscription options, using the personalized link
you'll find near the bottom of list messages to you. It looks like this:

http://lists.frameusers.com/mailman/options/framers/YourName%40YourDomai
n

One of the subscription options is "Receive your own posts to the list?"
Another is "Avoid duplicate copies of messages?" These settings can
affect whether you receive copies of messages you send to the list.

3) If your posts _aren't_ in the archive, did you get any error messages
from the list (check spam folder)? Did you send HTML or RTF messages
instead of plain text? (For security reasons, the list requires plain
text.)

4) If it still isn't working for you, send a message explaining the
problem and what you've done to listadmin at frameusers.com. If this is
affecting a number of people, it's important that the admin know that.

PDF Documentation

2009-01-22 Thread Scott Prentice
OK .. I'll add my 0.02 to this "survey" ..

Cheers,

Slow File Loading in FM9

2009-01-22 Thread Mike Wickham
I've started playing with the FM9 trial, and I've noticed a change. Files
load much more slowly for me. It's due to FM9 loading all graphics before it
presents the first page. Previous FM versions presented the first page, and
only loaded graphics for other pages if I actually scrolled to a page that
had them. My files are graphically rich. So a file that used to take six
seconds to load, now takes 47.

Though loading of the file is very slow, paging through the file is now
instantaneous. In previous FM versions, loading of the file was fast and
paging (the first time) was slower, as graphics were loaded for that page.
Now, file loading is slow and paging fast.

I don't page through the file that much, so I prefer the old behavior. Does
anyone know if there is a toggle for it somewhere?

Here's what I posted:

If you have a requirement to create illustrations but don't want to
shell out megabucks for the big name programs, take a look at

http://site.xara.com/offers/xaraxtreme/

I've been using Xara for several years, and find it to be a fantastic
value (even having paid full price). The offer above is for the
previous version, for only $19, available till the end of the month. You
won't believe what this product can do.

(No commercial interest in the company, just a very satisfied user.)

New Adobe Technical Communication Suite 2 and newAdobeeLearningSuite

I was using Acrobat 8 Professional that came with Adobe Design Premium

My question is do you need Acrobat Pro Extended or will Acrobat Pro (or
even Acrobat Standard) suffice?

John,
I'm not positive because I haven't played with it yet myself, but I
think the next step is to use Frame's Track Changes tool to
Accept/Reject the delete / insert comments that you've imported.

PDF Documentation

2009-01-22 Thread ri...@inficon.com

These instruments are
not sold "over the counter".

Perhaps your products are more
"mainstream". But, for me, PDF works well for all but my hand held
products, and PDF is preferred over hardcopy by all but my hand held
product users.

Richard

Quick Survey:

Is it your experience that users view PDF documentation on their
computer display in preference to printing it for use?

If so, by what ratio of view:print? Opinions and SWAGs are fine.

You need Pro or Pro Extended to create a PDF that reviewers can mark up
with Adobe Reader. The version comparison matrix is at:

Vaguely OT: Graphics Editor Recommendations?

2009-01-22 Thread ri...@inficon.com
Lea,

I use Adobe Photoshop for bitmap stuff.

I use Adobe Illustrator for vector stuff.

I use FullShot for screen captures, saving into PNG format.

Thanks much in advance,
Lea

It's my understanding that what you need the Pro Extended version for
is to implement the shared browser-based review using Acrobat.com
and avoiding the hassle of setting up your own web server with the
(very expensive) Acrobat server extensions software. And the advantage
of the browser-based review workflow over one that uses a file server
is that each reviewer's markup gets merged into the master review file
so that all reviewers see all previous markup/comments.

Why does Frame cycle 2x ?

2009-01-22 Thread Nancy Allison

Whenever I use "Find" in a book, Frame always cycles twice through each
chapter file before going on to the next chapter file.

How come?

How do I make it STOP.

Why does Frame cycle 2x ?

2009-01-22 Thread Lief Erickson
My experience is that if you leave the Find dialog box to edit
something, FrameMaker knows this and starts its search over from the
last location of the cursor in the flow until it has circled through the
file back to the cursor spot. If you don't jump from the Find dialog
into the document, FrameMaker only goes through the file once. I know of
no way to have it stop once it reaches the end of the file without
circling back through if I've made a change in the document that wasn't
using the Find dialog.
