Hi Ken,

I wish you luck in your journey. I'm still learning a lot of this myself,
but I would be happy to help in whatever way I can.

You're right about Sound RTS slowing down with big, laggy maps, but I
believe that's more a matter of the way the game was coded. If the developer
used a module like numpy, I think he'd have better luck. At the same time,
though, keep in mind how slow games like ToC get when you have them running
with lots of units at once, especially if you try to throw in Braille
support.

Keep in touch. I'd love to keep up with how you're faring in your practice.

Best,
Ryan

Wow! Well-done Ryan! You must have spent all day writing that!
I'm just learning Python myself, and my intention is to pick up some of the
slack in NVDA. I'm starting out with simple things, like learning to move
the focus to specific coordinates to make apps like Paltalk easier to use.
Later I'd like to learn how to get it to recognize graphics, and label those

graphics like I used to in Jaws. After that, I might start taking Moosik
apart and rewrite for the new python libraries, since I really want more
games to play with my sighted kids, but that's way beyond my abilities at
this point.
I still think that speed is a major issue though. Have you tried playing
SoundRTS on the big maps, with 4 or 5 computer opponents? My computer just
can't do it.
Other than that though, there are a lot of things I like about python,
especially its interactivity and load time. NVDA can shut down and restart
in just under two seconds, and Moosik doesn't take much longer.

 Hi Tom,

As a budding game developer, I want to respond to your below email to
 paint
what I feel is a more accurate picture of the python language. I think
 there
are a few additional points everyone really should consider before jumping
headfirst into C#.net as I tried to, especially when that jump can meet
 with
 some pretty spectacular failures.
I will proceed our statements and responses with initials.

TW: On the plus side Python is easy to learn, is cross-platform, and there
are a number of simple APIs like PyGame available to help you quickly get
 up
and running with game programming. ... All of this makes Python look good
 on
 the surface.

RS: This is exactly why Python *is* good, not just on the surface, but
deeper down. Imagine being able to program a game right out of the box
 that
will reach not only the Windows community, but the Mac community as well.
How many of you out there are Mac users who lament the fact that you don't
have any games to play on your computers because they've all been designed
for windows? Python can fix that for you.

Additionally, because Python is easier to learn, it's also easier to
 debug.
It's a given that programmers spend far more time reading their code than
they do writing it, and Python gives you the 1UP on that too. It's the
 difference between
 C#
 void main(string[args])
 {
 System.Console.WriteLine(Hello world);
 }

 And Python:
 print Hello world.

Even those of you who have never programmed a day in your life can see the
 difference.

interpreter or runtime environment to run.

to update 40 to 60 times a second Python is going to exicute and run very
slow. It was never designed to handle high performance applications like
Shades of Doom, Mysteries of the Ancients, etc. For something like that

2011-04-24 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Ryan,

Smile. Just a couple of corrections. I think you misunderstood a
couple of things I said. Plus I think I owe you somewhat of an apology
too.

RS: PyGame does have joystick support. It has mouse support as well. And
while the sound mixer may be lacking, there are other libraries that can
pick up the slack. Libraries like those found at
http://hg.qwitter-client.net. It's also worth pointing out that all of these

TW: I did not say it didn't have joystick support I said it does not
support joysticks with force feedback. Big, big, big difference here.
I'm well aware PyGame supports joysticks, as SDL does, but joystick
support is very generic rather than advanced support. That's what I
meant.
RS: I'm going to come out directly and say that the previous statement is
rather insulting. The language does not make the programmer, just as the
tools don't make the carpenter. If you want to be a pro and write pro-level
games, then learn to be a programmer and stick with what works for you.

TW: My apologies.I didn't mean it to come out that way. I certainly
didn't want to insult anyone. I just want to express my opinion as I
see it. Coming from a CS background were we were instructed to use
C++, Java, SQL, etc I'm really having troubles accepting Python as
anything more thanan amateur/newby language used by script kiddies and
programmer wannabes.

Of course, I am well aware Python has been growing both in support and
has been used to write a number of high-quality applications putting
the lie to my personal opinions. In fact, the screen reader I'm using
right now, Orca, was written in Python 2.6, and I'm certainly not
complaining that Orca was written in Python. I actually don't care as
long as it works and lets me read/write e-mail, use Open Office,
browse the internet, etc. So in that respect I know Python is more
than an amateur language used by real professionals. What can I say
I'm biast.

Hi Dark,

All of the latest information--the day-to-day stuff--will come out on the
blog at www.greymatterproductions.com/blog. When I have something official,
I will be certain to let you know.

I am hoping to put out something in audio soon, but I'll need to tackle a
few things first. Right now most of the major systems are in place. In fact,
you can have a full-blown boxing match with a clown. Yes, a clown. Because I
don't have proper sound files, though, things like the referee counting are
represented by a series of tones. When I get the fight mechanic completely
cemented, I'll put some real sfx in place, and then you shall have your
demo.

Best,
Ryan

that lend themselves to head-to-head play. Everything I produce in future,

Re: [Audyssey] Derek the Claric

2011-04-24 Thread Mike Maslo
A couple of questions on this game.

1. I go into the cave and find one of the power cubes and kill one of the
two bats usually and get another power cube but it appears that the door
needs five of them. Where do I find the others at?

Also does anyone else have this problem? If I move to fast and walk into the
cave wall it sometimes sticks and does not stop saying cave wall. It just
repeats it over and over and over and the only way of it stopping is by
escaping out of the game.

Any help on these issues would be appreciated.

Re: [Audyssey] Unleash Your Potential!

2011-04-24 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Ryan,

As I'm someone also looking for a cross-platform version of the game
may I ask what APIs you are using etc? I might be able to help you get
Linux compatibility going here since I have Python 2.6 and PyGame
installed on this system. I also have FMOD Ex installed, but I don't
have PySonic installed since I couldn't get it to compile on Linux for
some reason. In addition, I have SFML and PySFML installed. I also
have PyTTS installed for direct text to speech using Python 2.6. That
pretty much covers most of the cross-platform libraries you might be
using. If you need any help I'd be more than willing to see this
project become a cross-platform capable version. Lord knows we don't
have enough of those. Since you have decided on Python, which is very
cross-platform compatible, I say go for it.

Cheers!

Re: [Audyssey] Unleash Your Potential!

2011-04-24 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Ryan,

So far this sounds great. I've just read your blog a few minutes ago,
and it sounds like you are adapting to the language rather well.
Believe me when I say every new programmer goes through the experience
of having to learn a lot of terms they don't know, have to do research
to explain whatever they are reading, until they fully grasp the
content. Its a rough hall no matter what programming language you
start with, but it looks like you are learning fast. Keep up the good
work.

As for encrypting your programs I'm not sure what you mean by that.
Are you talking about encrypting the executables?

If so I'm not sure about that since most of my experience with Python
has been in a free and open source nature. Many Python developers just
do a bite code compile on the Python programs, convert the py files to
pyc files, and redistribute them that way if they don't want to
release the source. However, that's far from encrypting them so
hackers can't reverse the code. My guess is you can't encrypt them but
might have to use an obfuscation tool to make it so even if you
convert a pyc file to a py source file it is hopelessly scrambled.
Anyone else have any ideas on this subject as I'm curious myself.

Cheers!

Hey Tom,

Fair points both, and I can well understand one's bias toward a particular

Hi Ryan,

Smile. Just a couple of corrections. I think you misunderstood a couple of
things I said. Plus I think I owe you somewhat of an apology too.

RS: PyGame does have joystick support. It has mouse support as well. And
while the sound mixer may be lacking, there are other libraries that can
pick up the slack. Libraries like those found at
http://hg.qwitter-client.net. It's also worth pointing out that all of these

TW: I did not say it didn't have joystick support I said it does not support
joysticks with force feedback.

I certainly didn't
want to insult anyone. I just want to express my opinion as I see it.
Coming from a CS background were we were instructed to use
C++, Java, SQL, etc I'm really having troubles accepting Python as
anything more thanan amateur/newby language used by script kiddies and
programmer wannabes.

Of course, I am well aware Python has been growing both in support and has
been used to write a number of high-quality applications putting the lie to
my personal opinions. In fact, the screen reader I'm using right now, Orca,
was written in Python 2.6, and I'm certainly not complaining that Orca was
written in Python. I actually don't care as long as it works and lets me
read/write e-mail, use Open Office, browse the internet, etc. So in that
respect I know Python is more than an amateur language used by real
professionals. What can I say I'm biast.

1. I go into the cave and find one of the power cubes and kill one of the

needs five of them. Where do I find the others at?

Also does anyone else have this problem? If I move to fast and walk into

repeats it over and over and over and the only way of it stopping is by
escaping out of the game.

Any help on these issues would be appreciated.

compatibility going here since I have Python 2.6 and PyGame installed on

installed since I couldn't get it to compile on Linux for some reason. In
addition, I have SFML and PySFML installed. I also have PyTTS installed for
direct text to speech using Python 2.6. That pretty much covers most of the
cross-platform libraries you might be using. If you need any help I'd be
more than willing to see this project become a cross-platform capable
version. Lord knows we don't have enough of those. Since you have decided on
Python, which is very cross-platform compatible, I say go for it.

Re: [Audyssey] Python resources, possibly somewhat o/t

2011-04-24 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Ryan,

Yeah, I understand. I mean it is taking me 10 times longer to write
Mysteries of the Ancients than it would in something like Python
simply because the language is so much more complex. When you think
about how many braces, brackets, and other syntax goes into a standard
C++ application it all adds up to extra time typing all of that where
in Python you can just double space and start your new function
without having to remember if you added enough right braces to the end
of your function to properly terminate that block of code.

All the same there are some things that just rilly turn me off about
Python. For example, the way the Python developers decided somewhere a
long the way not to use technical terminology and rename everything to
be Python specific. As someone who was trained professionally in
languages like C++, Java, etc it really gets me that instead of
calling object serialization by its technical name they call it
pickling. Instead of calling an array an array they have dictionaries,
lists, toupals, etc which just seems weird to me. So that's one reason
I said Python teaches people bad habits and would have to relearn
terminology and things like that if they take up another language.
Python tends to forsake the technical terminology, and other things a
pro would learn in college in order to be more understandable to
someone without the high priced education. I understand how calling an
array a list or dictionary might be easier to grasp than a name such
as an array, but the fact of the mmatter is they are technically
arrays with a different name. Although, where they got the name
pickling for object serialization I'll never know. Its a bit silly to
my mind.

Anyway, as you said we are both creating games and that is the
important thing. In the end how you write it doesn't matter as long as
it works.

One advantage you have with Python that I don't have with C++ is
cross-platform support. Since Python is primarily a runtime language
most of your game will use modules like PyGame that wraps some native
C++ library like SDL. Since you aren't bound to SDL directly you can
install the pyc files and run them anywhere there is a compatible
Python runtime and PyGame installation without recompiling. All the
low-level stuff like native code is done by the C/C++ guys leaving you
free to write your games without worrying about the APIs you are
using.

With C++ I have to recompile the game, and even sometimes modify
sections of the program to compile it on a new target platform.
However, since there usually are no handy third-party wrappers for
things I usually get stuck using some sort of operating system
specific code like SAPI, the Win32 API, DirectX, whatever meaning I
have to do a lot of upgrading to support Mac/Linux. This is an issue
I'm really trying to solve as it gets tiring rewriting this or that to
support one operating system or the other. Most likely after MOTA is
done I'll write some third-party wrappers for OS specific things
meaning I can just include this or that library during compile time
and forget it.

Cheers!

Hi Ryan,

H...I see. Well, I've never tried this myself, so I could be way
off the mark, but you might be able to secure your program by using
PyCripto on the pyc files directly. As long as you use a decent
password someone would have to be pretty determined to crack those
files. Don't know if that would effect program execution though.

anything at this point, I haven't really explored them yet.

 Best,

Re: [Audyssey] Happy Easter, from PCS games.

2011-04-24 Thread dark

Hi Phil.

If you'd like an original version especially for Sarah, I'd be quite willing
to reccord and sing one, --- sinse singing is sort of one of my major
interests (I've got my first professional concert in may).

Yes, I'm obviously a tenor and male, but I don't recall the book specifying
which mir people actually did the singing.

If you'd like me to have a look at this let me know, though the version from
the film is fine too.

Beware the grue!

Hi Thomas,
No that is from the movie soundtrack.
At the time I worked on it, the soundtrack was the only version I could
find.
Today I did a google youtube search and found about a half dozen versions,
of people trying to copy the song.

Re: [Audyssey] Python resources, possibly somewhat o/t

2011-04-24 Thread Willem Venter
Hi Thomas.
Just my two sens worth :
I study computer sience and I'm currently third year. While we use c
and java as our main development languages, python is a compulsary
module too, simply because proof of concepts are so easy to program.
Also doing tournaments like IT challenge or Google codeJam is much
easier with python.
As for braces, python has a similar issue with indentation, which I
guess leads to better looking code, but I find annoying.

On 4/24/11, Thomas Ward thomasward1...@gmail.com wrote:

 Cheers!

On 4/24/11, Ryan Strunk ryan.str...@gmail.com wrote:
 Hey Tom,

Fair points both, and I can well understand one's bias toward a particular
language. I myself am kindly disposed to Python if you hadn't noticed. For
me it really came down to basic understanding. I hated having to write out
 a
complex program to print hello world, especially when every book I read
said things like Don't worry about the class and void stuff yet. We'll
 get
to those in chapter 8. If we don't get to understand them immediately,
 why
do we use them now? With Python, I just type print 'hello world' and I'm
done. I love the fact that when I want to test health subtraction, I can
just launch the shell with those particular methods and test them
interactively. It's cut down on any number of semantic errors as a result.

That said, I'm jealous of things like XNA that have all sorts of sound
craziness that I don't have. I suppose I'll just have to port some open
source libraries and use them myself.

In the end, we're both making games, and I think that's the important
 part.

Re: [Audyssey] Unleash Your Potential!

2011-04-24 Thread GreyMatter Info
Yohandy,

I certainly understand your skepticism. We've been treated to a number of
spectacular whiffs in the community over the years: Castle Quest, tournament
of 9 kings, Max Shrapnel, etc. You have no reason to suspect I'll be any
different, I suppose, but since you've started following my progress on
Twitter, I hope the transparency will convince you of my dedication to
seeing this through. The very reason I'm being as forward with my
development as I am is because I want people to realize everything that's
involved, and I want that extra communal push. It's easy to fade into
obscurity when nothing is at stake. This will be different.

All that said, if you're expecting something on the grand scale of MK9,
you're going to be sadly disappointed. I make no bones about the fact that I
don't have the programming expertise to pull off an epic release at this
point. However, I do have enough experience not to release a Guess the
Number game as my first title. What you'll get is something in the middle of
that vast expanse: a modified clone of Punch Out with, I hope, enough replay
value and challenge to keep things interesting for a while. Will it be
something you'll spend 40 hours trying to beat? Maybe not. But it will be
something new, and it will be something different.

In the meantime, I don't blame you in the slightest, but I hope I can change
your mind.

Warm regards,
Ryan

Re: [Audyssey] Unleash Your Potential!

2011-04-24 Thread GreyMatter Info
Dark and Willem,

I appreciate the kind words. As I wrote in my previous post, skepticism is
warranted. As you both said, though, there is enough here that it's not just
an I'm planning to do this type announcement. In fact, here's exactly what
exists at this point:

There is an opponent object, and he is able to throw a full range of upper
and lower punches from achingly slow to too-fast-to-dodge.
There is a player object, and he can throw his four basic punches and an
ultra punch. He can dodge and block.
Both the player and opponent can be knocked down and can stand up. In the
case of the player, this requires some serious button mashing. This also
includes a referee who will count the player or opponent out if he is down
too long. It also includes the TKO rule: if a fighter is knocked down 3
times in one round, the fight is over.
There are methods in place that allow the player to do extra damage
depending on how he counters his opponents' punches.
All this being said, it is possible to have a complete fight with the test
opponent, provided the fight doesn't last into the second round.

What I still need to do:
Build the framework for stat tracking. I want to display the stats of a
given round after it has ended. Right now, though, the code I have in place
to do that is ugly as sin and needs to be refactored. I need to pass each
round to the fight and eventually pass each fight to the career stats.
That's my mission for today.
Build in a record system to keep track of player and opponent wins and
losses. If an opponent beats you, and you challenge him to a rematch, his
win/loss record will need to reflect that he beat you. Ditto for yours.
Finish the code to win/lose a fight. When you win or lose a fight right now,
the only thing that happens is that the bell rings. That needs to be
changed.
Build code so that the player can win/lose by decision.
Wrap the game in a menu system so that the fight doesn't start as soon as
you launch the game.
Finish programming the opponents. In most cases this will be a matter of
laying out punches. For a few specific opponents, however--the pirate, the
cowboy, the creation (more on that soon)--it will require a few extra
methods. That will come once I've completed the alpha.
Finish with sound design. That's probably my biggest hurdle, and it's going
to take some time. I picked up a Yeti microphone, and I love it, but I'm
having trouble getting Sound Forge to recognize it. I suppose I could use
Garage Band to record the voices, but I'm not good enough with GB at this
point to just bust out the Mac and record those files on the fly. I don't
even know if you can monitor GB for clipping. That, too, will come after the
alpha.
Design the achievement system. There are stats in place to check for
achievements, but nothing is being done with them. I need to come up with
specific achievements and start implementing them. That's another beta-level
undertaking.
And, of course, there's the complete lack of documentation that currently
exists. As a matter of fact, this is the most I've ever written about the
game.

As you can see from the above, the blog, and my previous posts, this is all
incredibly new. It is progressing, though. I never would have dreamed 4
months ago that I would have a working proto-type of a game. While there is
a lot yet to accomplish, especially since I'll be developing in the evenings
opposite my full-time job, completion isn't that far off.

As always, I'll keep you posted.

Best,
Ryan

Hi Ryan.

that actually sounds like a lot to me personally, though i know things like
adding different opponents and making them distinct will be quite a stretch.

stil it's nice to know where you are with this.

As I said, on principle I don't announce games from new developers until
there is either a recorded audio demonstration, or a playable demo just to
make certain there is no delay problem, however it actually sounds like the
project is progressing well.

As for game complexity, well sinse I was a private alpha tester for
entombed, I actually remember the point when the game only had one dungeon
floorwith just goblins as enemies and only one sort of weapon or armour. All
you could do was walk around, initiate a fight and hit things.

then, look at light tech interactive, rs games or philip bennifall. all
started with something comparatively simple and went on from there (and in
Philips' case, a lng! way).

So long as you don't have an expectation that a basic arcade sterrio
shooter, bog standard turn based numeric dice combat or a guess the number
game will be seen as ground breaking, be up there with the likes of Shades
of doom and be played by many people the way some people in the past have.

As a friend of mine who is now a professional software engineer has often
said, Game programming is hard, but it is not impossible.

When I get the fight mechanic completely
cemented, I'll put some real sfx in place, and then you shall have your
demo.

Coming from a traditional language background, I have had to do a lot of
back-translation, lists/sequences/tuples to various arrays and the like, so
I get where you are coming from Thomas. It's weird having three different
data types that implement array-like behavior with teeny differences that
are nonetheless critical to proper code writing. I still haven't figured
out the purpose of tuples, and dictionaries look cool as heck but I can't
figure out how to turn them into something I recognize, though I've looked
at a number of examples of how to use them to create analogs to heaps, tree
structures and things I'm used to from the Pascal/C world.

Re: [Audyssey] Python resources, possibly somewhat o/t

2011-04-24 Thread shaun everiss

well ryan Judging by your blog you are sertainly moving fast.
I read you even made your own modules and package libs which is quite good.
Most devs just download stuff and do the game.
They may make one lib but that doesn't always mean several will come
out during game development these take ages.

That you can do what you did in 4 months I think is just crazy.
I started my programming courses in javascript and pascal and never
got the hang of it.

I kept forgetting bits and dropping variables and values.
There was a period where I loaded the entire dotnet language system
and resource kits.
being that it was 600mb per language loaded, and at that time then
4-5gb for express 2005, then about 2gb of resource kits for dx9, and
sapi5, not to mention mdi math, and the directx8 system.

And the manuals and all this before I started.
Well one day I just thought not for me.

Sertainly python is good if its done right.
Nvda is made with python and in some cases its actually running
closer to the core os using mostly system spaciffic libs with a few c
libs of its own but not many.
Sertainly python can't do everything but then a load of things need
overlays and drivers and then libs to access the protected areas of
the os to stop it crashing etc.

Its why I decided to not bother with directx programming.
I may eventually learn bgt since thats already a good language and is
in my price range since opensource is free, and that is probably what
I would end up doing if I did that anyway.

So keep it up.
At 04:00 a.m. 25/04/2011, you wrote:

Hey Tom,

Fair points both, and I can well understand one's bias toward a particular
language. I myself am kindly disposed to Python if you hadn't noticed. For
me it really came down to basic understanding. I hated having to write out a
complex program to print hello world, especially when every book I read
said things like Don't worry about the class and void stuff yet. We'll get
to those in chapter 8. If we don't get to understand them immediately, why
do we use them now? With Python, I just type print 'hello world' and I'm
done. I love the fact that when I want to test health subtraction, I can
just launch the shell with those particular methods and test them
interactively. It's cut down on any number of semantic errors as a result.

That said, I'm jealous of things like XNA that have all sorts of sound
craziness that I don't have. I suppose I'll just have to port some open
source libraries and use them myself.

In the end, we're both making games, and I think that's the important part.

Hi Ryan,

What can I say I'm biast.

and it all boils down to what we write no matter what language we use
it all depends on what we want.

There are even those that use autoit for games.
Ok they are crappy but if all your stuff is just basic board style
games maybe a few simple arcade then its probably fine.

 Cheers!

I suppose I'll just have to port some open
source libraries and use them myself.

different, I suppose, but since you've started following my progress on
Twitter, I hope the transparency will convince you of my dedication to
seeing this through.

In the meantime, I don't blame you in the slightest, but I hope I can change

when these announcements are posted, the game is still in the planning

particularly those games for those folks who enjoy role playing? If one

Hi Ryan.

that actually sounds like a lot to me personally, though i know things
like adding different opponents and making them distinct will be quite a
stretch.

stil it's nice to know where you are with this.

As I said, on principle I don't announce games from new developers until
there is either a recorded audio demonstration, or a playable demo just to
make certain there is no delay problem, however it actually sounds like
the project is progressing well.

As for game complexity, well sinse I was a private alpha tester for
entombed, I actually remember the point when the game only had one dungeon
floorwith just goblins as enemies and only one sort of weapon or armour.
All you could do was walk around, initiate a fight and hit things.

then, look at light tech interactive, rs games or philip bennifall. all
started with something comparatively simple and went on from there (and in
Philips' case, a lng! way).

So long as you don't have an expectation that a basic arcade sterrio
shooter, bog standard turn based numeric dice combat or a guess the number
game will be seen as ground breaking, be up there with the likes of Shades
of doom and be played by many people the way some people in the past have.

As a friend of mine who is now a professional software engineer has often
said, Game programming is hard, but it is not impossible.

be released. even if it takes a very long time for this to actually occur,
I'm sure we'd all appreciate it if you keep the community updated on your

Re: [Audyssey] Unleash Your Potential!

2011-04-24 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Yohandy,

Well, you are right that there have been a number of games mentioned
on list, and some of them never get passed the planning stage. I think
that often times the potential developer finds out that he/she has
bitten off more than they can chew, so to speak, and give up on it.
That said, I try to take a developer at his/her word unless given
reason to think otherwise.

I myself am guilty of announcing games in the works well in advance
before you see a finished project. To date I've hinted at STFC 2.0, a
wrestling game, an RPG, and of course my up coming cross-platform
version of USA Blackjack. I certainly haven't given up on these
projects, I fully intend to write them when I have the time, but with
two major comercial releases like Mysteries of the Ancients and USA
Raceway taking up 99% of my programming time right now something like
STFC 2 or my free wrestling game have to be put on the back burner
until I can fit them into my schedule. sometimes real life such as my
wife, kids, work, etc just take up more time not giving me a chance to
do everything I'd like to do in a single day. So I try not to be too
hard on new aspiring developers.

Cheers!

Re: [Audyssey] Unleash Your Potential!

2011-04-24 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi,

Well, yes a person can certainly do cross-platform programming with
Python, but only if the developer designs his/her game that way. There
are a number of modules/APIs that are operating system specific such
as various wrappers for the Win32 API, MS Sapi, etc that would
definitely blow any chance at a cross-platform product. It just
depends on how the program is designed.

For instance, lets talk about using a simple game timer. there are a
few different ways to acomplish this. You could use the timers found
in PyGame which are cross-platform, but if you created a system timer
using the Windows kernel module then it wouldn't be. It is little
things like that which makes or breaks cross-platform compatibility.

I couldn't find the Logitech f510.
But I did find the following.
Would like to have feedback from my fellow gamers if they would work with
the Three D Velocity flight simulator from BPC Programs and or the games
from Blind software.
It looks like both units are twelve buttons, duel sticks and have force
feedback written into them.
The first is from Wal-Mart
Mace Group USB Game Pad
The second is from K mart.
Steel Series #G Game Controller
They're both around the $25 to $50 price range.
This is all that I can give.
I wish I could give further details since I'm asking for advice from my
fellow gamers.
But this is all that I could find.
It does look like both gamepads will work in windows seven and in the 64 bit

And all assistance will be deeply appreciated.
Many Many Thanks.

Hi Ryan.

that actually sounds like a lot to me personally, though i know things
like adding different opponents and making them distinct will be quite a
stretch.

stil it's nice to know where you are with this.

As I said, on principle I don't announce games from new developers until
there is either a recorded audio demonstration, or a playable demo just
to make certain there is no delay problem, however it actually sounds
like the project is progressing well.

As for game complexity, well sinse I was a private alpha tester for
entombed, I actually remember the point when the game only had one
dungeon floorwith just goblins as enemies and only one sort of weapon or
armour. All you could do was walk around, initiate a fight and hit
things.

then, look at light tech interactive, rs games or philip bennifall. all
started with something comparatively simple and went on from there (and
in Philips' case, a lng! way).

So long as you don't have an expectation that a basic arcade sterrio
shooter, bog standard turn based numeric dice combat or a guess the
number game will be seen as ground breaking, be up there with the likes
of Shades of doom and be played by many people the way some people in the
past have.

As a friend of mine who is now a professional software engineer has often
said, Game programming is hard, but it is not impossible.

Re: [Audyssey] Developing a game

2011-04-24 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Kim,

Well, you are right that developing a game requires several different
talents/skills when creating a game from start to finish. First, and
foremost the developer has to have an active imagination and have
fairly decent creative writing skills. Second, there are a number of
technical skills such as learning a programming language as well as
learning a variety of APIs for handling input, sound, music, speech
output, whatever. A developer may need to know various programming
techniques such as artificial intelligence which can cover several
books in and of itself. If a developer wishes to add something like 3d
graphics then that would involve some fairly decent math and physics
skills in order to render the graphics on screen correctly. So
programming games certainly rrequires skills from both a programming
and non-programming nature just to produce a game of any real quality.
As to your questions I'll answer them in a question and answer format
below.

Question:

I'm very curious to know how developers go about making a game,
particularly those games for those folks who enjoy role playing? If one
is blind and doing the developing, I'm wondering what is done to give
the world verisimilitude?

Answer:

Well, by verisimilitude I assume you mean seem realistic/probable its
like any other roll playing game. A game developer would build in stat
checks, rolls, using a common rule set like d20 to figure out if an
action succeeded or failed in game. However, in a computer program all
stat checks would be handled internally foregoing any need to pull out
your own dice and do your own rolls and calculations.

Question:

How is developing a RPG similar
to and different from writing a novel or short story?

Answer:

Well, as far as the non-technical part goes they are very similar.
Before a developer starts programming a game like an rpg he or she
will need to write the back story for each major campaign or adventure
and write up the descriptions of everyone and everything in the game.
A lot of this initial writing will become the majority of the text you
would include in your rpg game. For instance, consider the following
text.

You are standing in the small sea-side town of Southport. As you
stand there gazing at the small village you can detect the salty sent
of the sea not far away. There are a number of people passing in and
out of the buildings along this street. What would you like to do?

Visit the SouthPort In
Visit the Local Taverin
Visit the Docks
Travel Somewhere Else

You'd be surprised how much time you can save by having all these
textual descriptions of people, places, and things written up in
advance before doing the actual coding. So in that respect its kind of
like writing a short story, but its all from a second person point of
view.

However, unlike doing creative writing there is the technical side to
creating an rpg game. There is quite a bit of coding involved here,
and of course you will need something like the Dungeons and Dragons
handbooks to actually create a realistic enough system for handling
stat checks and things like that. Since the DND guides are fairly
standard I'd use those as an example for doing combat, skill checks,
and other rpg elements that requires a dice throw.

As it happens I'm working on a rpg game myself, one based on the DC
Universe, and I'm using the Dungeons and Dragons 3.5 handbooks to kind
of help with the stat checks, building custom classes, and things like
that I need to make the game somewhat realistic. For instance, since
the Flash can move at the speed of light I obviously set his dexterity
to 18 the maximum allowable in DND. That would give him an extra 4
points to any dice roll requiring speed/agility.I also created a
custom class called Speadster which gives him an extra 2 points to a
dice roll for speed as that's his unique special power. See how the
DND rule handbooks can help with creating a custom rpg?

Re: [Audyssey] Python resources, possibly somewhat o/t

2011-04-24 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Willem,

Yeah, i know. Python is very picky about indintation. Personally, I'd
just ratherwrite the code and then run it through a program like
indent to format it. That's often what I do with my C++ or Java
applications. I write the app, make sure it is working, then use the
indent tool for Linux to go in and format it so it looks formal and
written according to formatting rules etc. With Python you absolutely
have to indent as you go or you are in deep trouble in a hurry. It
won't allow me to be lazy and slack off on formatting.

However, you are write Python is good at prototyping things. That's
honestly mostly what I use Python for myself. I'll go in, write a few
blocks of code, and test them to see how it works before applying it
to MOTA, Raceway, or anything I want to put my name on written in C++.

Cheers!

As for braces, python has a similar issue with indentation, which I

Re: [Audyssey] Python resources, possibly somewhat o/t

2011-04-24 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Chris,

Yeah, that's exactly my problem as well. You spend x number of years
learning languages like C, C++, Java, etc and you think you know it
all and along comes Python having all these array types such as lists,
dictionaries, sequences, etc all with miner differences and I can't
figure out what exactly what I need or what equals what I already
know. Its back translating sometimes from a more advanced concept to a
less advanced one sometimes. this was always my gripe with languages
like VB 6.

For instance, in Java and C++ you can extend or inherit classes etdc.
When using VB 6 its classes were more simplified and didn't have all
the features of something like Java or C++. Its like, hay, I'm an
advanced programmer here. Where is this or that feature I know exists
in C++ but not VB 6?

Same kind of issue applies with Python. Its not so much that the
language is bad, but it has its own way of doing things that drives a
triditionally trained programmer slightly nuts. Its like going back
and relearning everything all over again, because Python seems to
ignore things a C++ programmer takes for granted. They take away a
concept I know such as arrays and replaces it with three or four new
alternatives. Like why can't you guys just give me a basic array and
be done with it?

Cheers!

are nonetheless critical to proper code writing. I still haven't figured
out the purpose of tuples, and dictionaries look cool as heck but I can't
figure out how to turn them into something I recognize, though I've looked
at a number of examples of how to use them to create analogs to heaps, tree
structures and things I'm used to from the Pascal/C world.

HI Thomas,
Something that has confused me is this: obviously I am not following what

Subject: Re: [Audyssey] Python resources, possibly somewhat o/t

Hi Che,

Well, I'm not saying/arguing that Python can't write a game as good as
MOTA, but wanted to point out that there are some features you'll miss
by using something like Python with PyGame. For instance, if you wanted
to support force feedback devices PyGame currently doesn't have force
feedback support. This may or may not be adeal braker for a game
developer, but is something a new developer might want to be aware of.

Other issues is advanced audio. Since PyGame uses SDL Mixer it has
very very generic 3d audio support. For most games such as SoundRTS
this is a non-issue.There are alternatives though such as PySonic, a
wrapper for FMOD Ex, and PyOpenAL, a Python wrapper for OpenAL. Both
have 3d audio support, but I'm not sure of the status of these Python
wrappers. Thereis PySFML which wraps SFML and I know it is being
maintained as v1.6 was released not long ago. So if you take in
account these alternative game APIs a game like Shades of Doom is
certainly possible with a few exceptions such as no force feedback
support.

The other issue I wanted to stress , which isn't as big an issue now
as it use to be, is native code verses runtime code. There is no doubt
that correctly native written code in C++ or assembly will run faster
than any runtime language. However, I'm fully aware that not everyone
is willing to learn something like C++. That's where the runtime
languages like Python, Java, and .Net comes in handy as they are
high-level languages meant to simplify programming for amateurs and
professionals alike.

I still believe if you have the skills that programming in pure C/C++
is the best option. However, if you can't or don't want to .Net, Java,
and other runtime languages are getting close to native speeds by
optomising the frameworks, and it helps that more and more systems
with 3 GHZ processors are more common. The newer duel core systems
have no problem executing runtime languages like Python, Java, or .Net
because of improved CPU power. So you are definitely right that the
points I raised about performance is quickly becoming less an issue
than it use to be. I guess it all depends on what kinds of platforms
you plan to support.

So before I go I'd like to point out that I'm certainly not unbiast
when it comes to programming languages. Like religeon and politics all
of us have discovered languages that just works for us, languages we
like, and it is part experience and part personal preference that that
goes into what languages I recommend/support. I've always felt more at
home with C-Style languages like C++, Java, Perl, C#.Net, etc so
naturally its what I usually recommend. I've never taken to the
languages like Python, and I frankly don't like them for a number of
reasons. Both technical and personal. Just thought I should clarify
where I stand.

Cheers!

All I do remember is I didn't even know of PB Games until Dark
Destroyer came out and that was the first game I tried Philip wrote.
However, I believe he had a few other games written by then. So I
don't think I know which was his first.

maybe duckblaster or the snowball war? --- possibly 3D snake?

Perhaps someone who was playing audiogames in 2003 or so will know.

Beware the Grue!

Dark.

Hello Thomas, I was a little late poasting this message to the list, but
which files should you copy and paste into the Monkey Business folder?
This

is why I stopped playing it for a time until I can get the wild west level
sorted out because I loved that level a lot.

 Hi Dark,
3D Snake? Lol...3D Snake was a sequal to Snake so that's not remotely
possible. If I had to guess I'd say Snake.

 Best Regards,
 Hayden
